Cruising from Southampton with MSC Cruises (2022 Guide)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Front

MSC Cruises’ growth in Southampton has been somewhat meteoric over the last few years.

From just offering a few summer cruises back in 2017-8, to now offering all-year-round voyages from their own new cruise terminal, there is something on offer for every cruiser on a variety of different MSC ships.

IMPORTANT: Please stick to your embarkation times – this helps the flow of passengers through the terminal and onto the ship. Ignoring embarkation times leads to large queues and increased wait times.

Introduction to MSC Cruises UK

MSC Cruises operates from the Port of Southampton for its voyages. During the ‘Return to Cruising’ in 2021, MSC offered multiple embarkation ports additional to Southampton – these included Liverpool and Greenock (Glasgow).

In 2022 MSC Cruises will again offer a packed cruise programme with their flagship, MSC Virtuosa .

All cruises will depart from Southampton and whilst open to other nationalities this time around, embarkation will only be at the Port of Southampton and specifically, at their brand new cruise terminal – the Horizon Cruise Terminal .

In this guide, we will cover how the cruise terminal works and the embarkation and disembarkation procedures for sailing with MSC Cruises from Southampton.

What Covid-19 requirements are there when sailing with MSC from Southampton?

Which MSC cruise ships sail from Southampton?

How much luggage can I take?

The benefit of cruising is generally fewer limits on luggage. However, you will need to make sure that each bag/case is under 23KG – this is so that the people handling them can do so safely. Whilst the maximum cases are meant to be four per cabin, you can usually take one or two more if you are going on a much longer voyage – especially for repositioning or a world cruise.

Which cruise terminal does MSC Virtuosa sail from?

The Horizon Cruise Terminal – Dock Gate 10, Southern Road leads to Herbert Walker Avenue, where the car park and terminal are located.

Horizon Terminal Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal

Located at Dock Gate 10, Southern Road is the new Horizon Cruise Terminal – a joint partnership between MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

This is the main terminal for MSC Cruise departures – it is signposted as ‘Dock Gate 10’ or ‘Horizon Cruise Terminal’ on West Quay Road, Southampton. The postcode for your sat nav is SO15 1HG.

Horizon Cruise Terminal offers short stay and long stay parking. Drop-off facilities by car or taxi are also available at the port.

The short stay and long stay car park are both signposted and port staff are on hand to guide you to the correct car park or drop-off. You must book long-stay parking before arrival.

Taxis are available from just outside the front of the cruise terminal.

MSC Cruises Parking in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal Car Parking

MSC Cruises have their own parking in the Port of Southampton at the Horizon Cruise Terminal which is located on Southern Road, Southampton (SO15 1HG).

  • The parking is safe, secure and located on the Port of Southampton property
  • You take your keys with you after parking
  • The car park is locked after all passengers have arrived and the ship has set sail – it is monitored by CCTV and the port
  • Parking for Back to Back voyages is available
  • Blue Badge parking spaces are located nearer the front for easier terminal access
  • Luggage trolleys are on hand
  • Arrive anytime before your cruise ticket boarding time

Simply book your parking online for your cruise and then print out the parking voucher you are emailed.

When you drive to the port, follow directions to Dock Gate 10 and Horizon Cruise Terminal (SO15 1HG) – simply put the parking voucher on your dashboard and you will be directed by the car park staff to exactly where you park.

There are luggage trolleys on hand to take your luggage to the terminal and baggage drop-off area.

Cruise car parking can be booked directly via AB Parking .

MSC Cruises Embarkation in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal Drop off - MSC Cruises Southampton

After arriving at Horizon Cruise Terminal (whether by car, taxi or other means) you will need to drop off your luggage – this is usually just your case(s) that you would usually check-in if you were flying. Hand luggage and suit carriers can be taken inside the terminal (or anything else, as long as you can carry it through the terminal, security and onboard the ship without help).

Baggage drop-off

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Baggage drop off

Make sure you print out the luggage labels that are on the PDF that MSC Cruises sends you when you have ‘checked in’ online (your travel agent may send them if you didn’t book direct) – you can print out as many labels as you wish. Just attach them to your case before you hand them over to baggage drop-off. If you lose a label, forget one or need an extra one – just ask – you can get one at the baggage drop-off area.

Make sure your check-in luggage doesn’t weigh more than 23KG per case/bag – this is for the health and safety of the baggage handlers and the crew on board who will deliver your luggage to outside your cabin door for you.

Note: Do not put your passport in your check-in luggage – you need it next!

Initial Check-in

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Entrance

( Important: Since April 2022 the rules have changed regarding face masks in the terminal – they are not mandatory anymore)

At check-in, you’ll be asked to show your passport, cruise ticket, MSC health form (which is in your cruise ticket), Covid-19 test result and vaccination/proof of recovery certificates (if applicable).

You can show digital insurance/vaccination proof if needed on your phone – however, some people have said that reception in the terminal isn’t great – so feel to print out them beforehand, or save screenshots on your phone (make sure they are clear!)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Security area

Cruise ship security is much like airport security – apart from there is no limit on liquids (ie toiletries, etc) – MSC’s policy is not to bring drinks or food onboar d, but of course, you can bring some snacks/drinks for yourself or your children whilst you are boarding without issue.

Everything will go through the x-ray machine and you will walk through an x-ray scanner – belts, watches, etc will be placed in a tray via the machine.

Covid-19 Testing (no longer conducted at the port)

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Waiting Area

Important: Since late April 2022 – Covid-19 testing at the port is no longer conducted. However, you must still have a valid negative Covid-19 test that was taken within 48-hours of your embarkation time.

After security, you head up the escalator to the waiting area. A brief check of your paperwork follows (cruise ticket).

You will be assigned a group number (sticker or piece of paper) which you will need after the final check-in – this will be your waiting area number.

Final Check-in

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Check-in

After arriving in this area, you go to the long check-in desk at the rear of the cruise terminal. Here, a customer relations agent will take your cruise ticket and passport from you briefly, only to check. They may also ask to see your insurance details and take a copy of your vaccination history too.

They will ask to take a photo of you – this photo will be uploaded to the ship and used to confirm your purchases in shops on board and allow you entry to/from the ship.

You will then be handed your cruise card – this states which deck and cabin you are located on and also your dining time. Additionally, it will also be a different colour card based on the MSC Voyager Club status you have. Initial first-time passengers are blue cards.

Sometimes, you are given the option to register a credit or debit card here – but you can actually do this on board and have 48 hours from embarkation to do this at one of the many automated machines around the ship (more details about those in your cabin).

You then sit at the numbered waiting area until your group is announced to board the ship.

There are free refreshments (bottles of water) handed out by the MSC crew if you wish and also toilets available.

Boarding the ship

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Boarding the ship

When your group is called you head to the doors at the rear of the waiting area which is signposted – your cruise card will be checked and you follow the signs to the ship. The walk can be quite lengthy as the gangway is a series of ramps to allow wheelchair/mobility access. However, there is no rush and you can enjoy views of your ship as you walk along them.

As you approach the ship you’ll cross one final gangway onto the ship and you will need only your cruise card from here. A member of the ship’s security team will ask for your card which they will scan and they will check your photo (just taken) matches you – you are then free to enter the ship.

On arrival, you will find a number of MSC crew waiting to greet you – they can help direct you to lifts and/or your cabin if you need help. Generally, cabins are not ready until around 12:30-1pm PM on the day of embarkation.

You are free to use any of the bars, restaurants or other facilities on the ship from the moment you board!

Horizon Cruise Terminal (rear)

MSC Cruises Back to Back sailings from Southampton

If you are booked on a back to back cruise on the same ship with MSC Cruises you will need to visit the Guest Relations desk during your first cruise and confirm the procedure with them.

Generally, you will be required on the day of your second cruise to visit Guest Relations and settle your bill for your first cruise and they will re-check you in without you needing to leave the ship (this is only applicable in Southampton – other ports, such as Miami may differ) – this is usually done between 9-10am.

They will take a copy of your passport and vaccination record again and issue you a new cruise card for the second cruise duration (and take a new photo of you).

You will then need to visit the Medical Centre for a free Covid-19 LFT test which they will do for you – Guest Relations will phone ahead and confirm it is free and the result will be told to you and uploaded to the system so that the ship knows you are Covid-19 clear.

Other than that, everything else continues as normal – one thing to note is if you have an existing internet package is that it does not run out until midnight on your last day (your first day on your next cruise) – so you will need to use the same login information until midnight.

If you are parking at the Horizon Cruise Terminal for a Back to Back cruise – let them know when you arrive, you will be directed to park in a slightly different area (of the same car park) so that your car isn’t left in the way when everyone leaves from the first cruise!

MSC Cruises Disembarkation in Southampton

Horizon Cruise Terminal - Luggage collection

Disembarkation is very easy with the Horizon Cruise Terminal.

As standard practice on all cruises, the luggage that you do not wish to carry off will be collected from outside your cabin by around 1am on the last night of your voyage. You will be given labels to put on your luggage on the final day and you can visit Guest Relations if you need any more.

Depending on your MSC Voyager status or your MSC Cruise Experience (Bella, Fantastica, etc) you will be assigned a disembarkation time and a place to meet for this.

Simply follow the instructions on the letter in your cabin and make sure that your cruise balance is ZERO . If you are even in credit by 0.50 GBP/0.50 EUR you will be denied leaving the ship until you collect the balance from Guest Relations! Visit there before you leave the ship!

Seashore Embarkation for Yacht Club

I’ve read horror stories about the Seashores embarkation.  Do they still meet yacht club guests separately, take them to the lounge, etc. for emabarkation, or is it different during for Covid reasons?

Yacht Club line privileges are in place at both Port Miami and Port Canaveral.  Go to the white tent.  At Port Canaveral the tent is directly at the bottom of the escalator into the terminal.  At both ports expect to be escorted from the tent through the terminal by pier agents, then to the Topsail lounge by butlers.  Remember to drop your bags at the YC tent so they can be priority routed.  The porters do have the Gold luggage tags to retag your bags.

Thanks

Southern latitudes

At Port Canaveral, are they enforcing boarding times for Yacht Club?  We currently have a boarding time of 3 pm. which seems awfully late.  I am hopeful this will change when we get our E tickets at 20 days out (next week), but if it doesn't change, do we have to wait until 2 pm, which would be the earliest time within the hour window.

In Miami the terminal Seashore is using (Terminal F) is under construction.  It is a mess.  Look for the white tent in front of the terminal.  You may have to push your way through the throngs of passengers waiting for the regular check-in (the line goes on and on and on).  And also fight the porters wanting to take your bags early.  At the tent they will retag your bags for priority, check your name off the list, then you will be escorted into the terminal building past the masses who arrived early for their check-in where you will finish the cruise paperwork and be given your keys.  Then a butler will lead you straight onboard up to Yacht Club.

Good Sailing

I am on now, and taking next sailing in YC.

It was a mess with the terminal construction last week.

Not the usual greatness.

They took us in small groups and made us wait outside in the sun.

Once I side it was extra hassle due to vac requirements.

Part of issue is construction.

Steve, hope you guys are having a great cruise! Do you like the ship? How many pax on board?

Last 7 days.

2000 passengers total. We had only 130 in Yacht club.

This coming week is supposed to be very light as well.

Spent almost all time in YC. It's very nice.

That’s perfect. Enough to make it feel lively but not crowded everywhere! Enjoy!

Embarkation Virtuosa Query

Hi, does anyone know the earliest you can arrive at the port for embarkation ? We’ve got a late embarkation time which is disappointing, I just wondered if anyone got on earlier that their allotted time ? We’re in yacht club if anyone has any experiences.  I also read somewhere that the car park won’t allow you in until 30 mins before you’re allotted embarkation time. I just wondered if this was true if anyone has any experience of this too ?  I don’t mind but being able not to get into the cabin but it would be nice to get on to enjoy the facilities. I was advised we should get an early time ad were in yacht club but this isn’t the case.

In a regular cabin there is no leeway at all, I know @kernow  posted something about the YC maybe being more relaxed but I'm not sure, having tagged him I hope he can answer as I can't find the post now.

Thank you. I really appreciate that.

Not sure about early embarkation for YC but if you’re sailing from Southampton, when we arrived for our 24th May sailing, we drove straight in after the gate guard checked our parking pass. The pass for ABParking does not state your embarkation time, merely requests that you do not arrive more than 30 minutes prior.

Malibustacey79

We arrived at the later end of our slot, having had to travel to Liverpool a day earlier than we’d planned to travel to Greenock, so was all a bit of a rush. We literally didn’t queue AT ALL and were on unbelievably quickly, I think by just after 2pm having arrived around 1.40pm.

I have read/heard quite a bit over the last week about just turning up at 11am, and was wondering whether to try earlier for our July embarkation in Southampton (if we get to go).

HOWEVER…we disembarked yesterday in Liverpool, at 11am, and the queues to get on were really big, growing all the time, and didn’t appear to be moving much. Whether there was an issue, or whether too many people had decided to chance it at 11am, or both, I don’t know. But it’s put me off trying any earlier next time. I’ll be there at 12.20 as instructed!

kernow

Our original tickets had an embarkation time of 11 am but when we upgraded to YC the time was later. We were never able to print the new tickets so used the old ones. However I don't think it would have mattered, as soon as we walked into the terminal someone was calling out for YC passengers and they took us to a separate desk. From then on in YC was completely separate, we were on the ship within about 15 minutes.

We arrived at the car park about 10.20 expecting to wait but they directed us straight in and there were already people there before us.

Thanks

Arrive when it suits you, the YC butlers will whisk you aboard ASAP!  😉

travellerin1984

We have the same problem. We got 4 pm as a embarkation time for Grandiosa in July. It is so late, we cant have any lunch onboard… Do you think it is worth trying to come earlier?

The only issue is that if they don’t let us and we’re there 3 hrs before especially with kids, it’ll be a nightmare. I guess you could say there was no traffic and you sailed through (pardon the pun). I may try it and let u know how it goes.

I will try and be the last one off if we have to miss a few hours of the first day to make up for it 😂

stuart2468

I take it none of you have read the info from MSC stating DO NOT TURN UP before your alloted time?

Or you have and just choose to ignore it for what ever reason?

I haven’t seen this information, no. Thank you for advising. Is this on the website/app ?

You won't have any problem with that, as long as you clear your room you can stay in YC until the latest time if you like.

Hi! Just got off the Virtuosa! I don’t know anything official but when embarking in Liverpool they had special signs and lines for YC (and mens in suits tending to ya!) waiting for YC peeps- both in the initial embarkation line AND in the second line for receiving ur key card etc so I think YC get priority and then some!

Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to post a reply. I should imagine you had a wonderful time with only 1000 onboard. Sounds like a dream.  The last ship we went on was rci independence and it felt so packed in like sardines.

If you are in YC I'm sure you have a very good chance, they fall over themselves to assist, I think I would risk it if I had a YC cabin.

In the early threads it was clear they were making people with regular cabins wait outside the terminal building until their allotted time, I would certainly not bother trying with a regular cabin.

Thanks for ur thanks! No probs- as I know there was huge uncertainty about it all as I’ve never done MSC before. I remember thinking I wish I was YC as they seem to have all the priortiy even if I was diamond lol

Overall v impressed, the ship is stunning! It’s one of my faves now. Food bit hit and miss, service was excellent overall- it felt like there were 20 staff at ur beck and call it was so quiet! Lol

As you just got off and mentioned you were diamond, have they sorted oy the card problem? I think the earlier sailings everyone was getting a regular card and needed to get it sorted out at customer service to get the right card and perks.

I think this was sorted a while ago.No problems on our cruise a couple of weeks ago, card was correct and perks were all there for us and others we spoke to.

Good question! As it was first cruise I didn’t know any of that- I went for my comp meal at speciality restaurant and they had to check I was diamond lol! The next day the front desk called me and asked me to come and get a diamond card to replace the regular white one

Thanks for that, I hoped they had fixed the cards by now as we are onboard Saturday. 🤩

Thanks for that, it sounds like it might be pot luck with Johnnylickly's experience, or maybe just because it was Johnny's first MSC cruise.

Southampton

Located on the south coast of England, Southampton served as the historic ocean liner gateway for the British Empire and the intense North Atlantic passenger trade to the U.S. and Canada. Today it is the U.K.'s - and indeed Europe's -- leading cruise port. Best known as the homeport of Cunard's Queen Mary 2, Southampton now hosts a wide variety of cruise ships in the booming European cruise market with the principal lines being Cunard, Fred. Olsen, Royal Caribbean, P&O Cruises and Saga Cruises. For most cruise passengers, it's the first and/or last port on a European cruise or Atlantic crossing. But New York it ain't, and the first thing you see as you approach is not the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building, but a giant IKEA. A pleasant, bustling city of around a quarter of a million inhabitants, Southampton has several areas of interest, though much of its historic medieval character was destroyed during World War II. In 1620, the Mayflower left from just outside the existing city walls, and the waterfront recalls this historic voyage. From Mayflower Park, you can enjoy watching the container ships pass en route to and from the freight terminal beyond the Western Docks, cruise ships departing from three separate locations, and excursion boats and cross-harbour ferries flitting around the port. Today, it is a modern shopping destination, business centre and university town (the University of Southampton is a major British research university; among its well-known alumni is QM2 designer Stephen Payne with a large commercial port in addition to its year-round cruise operations. It's not somewhere you want to hang around (unless you want to pick up some flat-pack furniture), and most visiting cruise passengers will use Southampton as a gateway to nearby London (an hour and 10 minutes away by train). It is also a good starting point for the Isle of Wight (reachable by ferry) and the surrounding county of Hampshire and Wiltshire, with their numerous attractions.

Cherbourg

Cherbourg is a major cruise destination in Normandy and is well-equipped for visitors. The city's scenic landscape is composed of the shore as well as the nearby mountains, where tourist can engage in any number of activities. In its historic centre, there are a number of sights, attractions and landmarks including museums, churches and monuments. The local cuisine is also a highlight of any visit. --By Shayne Thompson, Cruise Critic contributor

Zeebrugge (Bruges)

Brugge (in Flemish -- it's Bruges in French) is one of the most visited cities in Europe and is the number one destination for passengers on cruise ships calling at Zeebrugge. Visitors flock here, not for a specific museum or historical location, but to wander amidst the city's stunning examples of Flemish and Renaissance architecture and immerse themselves in the vitality of the two main squares -- Markt and Berg. There is always so much going on in Brugges -- from flower and produce markets to rides for children, bustling cafes and restaurants and old-fashioned people watching. Never mind that Brugge's medieval appearance is largely a recent recreation. The city was rediscovered by 19th century tourists, mostly from England, heading to the site of the battle of Waterloo. Its growing popularity generated an interest to fix up the city following its downfall from one of the Hanseatic League's most important trading cities. Cloth had been the main commodity; the English wool came by ship directly to Brugge until the waterways silted up in the 15th century. The city fell into disrepair as much of the population drifted away, but in the 19th and early 20th century, Brugge was rebuilt in the traditional styles. From the two squares, lanes fan out to wonderful commercial and residential streetscapes, and many of the canals have fringing walkways. Perhaps one of the best views of the city is from a canal boat looking up at the historic buildings and stone bridges. The further you go from the center -- and you don't have to venture more than a few blocks -- the more serene the city becomes. All you need is a walking tour map and alert senses to come away enchanted with Brugge as millions have before you.

Amsterdam

There is a fairytale quality to the tree-lined canal streets of Amsterdam. Boutiques, cafes, apartments and hotels may hide behind the facades of the gabled townhouses, but the look of this beautiful old city has not changed much since its 17th-century Golden Age. Some 7,000 historic buildings remain, many of them beautiful merchants' mansions, located along canals that are laid out in five concentric circles, connected by bridges and intriguing small streets. No matter how many times you walk along the canals, they are enchanting to see, even when traffic and whizzing bicycles dispel the Old-World illusion. On a silent Sunday morning or on a summer evening when the old facades are floodlit, the city is magical. Amsterdam is small enough that much of the city can be covered on foot, allowing visitors to savor sights such as the charming no-two-alike gables atop the houses, houseboats bedecked with potted greenery and masses of blooms in the colorful, floating flower market. Shops offering antiques and avant-garde art beckon everywhere. Outdoor markets, selling everything from postage stamps and parakeets to "junk-tiques," are another intriguing facet of the city. Considered one of Europe's major art capitals, Amsterdam boasts three great Dutch museums as well as a branch of the Hermitage, the famous trove of art treasures in St. Petersburg, Russia. The Anne Frank House and Rembrandt's home are also popular attractions. In the performing arts, the city has two international stars: the National Ballet and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. (A 2008 poll from classical music magazine Gramophone called the latter the world's best.) The canal streets of the old city are protected by ordinance and will never change, but Amsterdam is expanding outward and architecture buffs will find both modern and historic neighborhoods to explore. Though quite close to the old city, Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), known as "the wave" for its free-form facade (shaped like a whale), is the part of the Eastern Docklands area where shipping docks have given way to neighborhoods of striking contemporary design that now house more than 20,000 people. Muziekgebouw aan het IJ, a concert hall for jazz and modern music, is adjacent to the terminal, and ongoing construction will bring many more amenities, including hotels. With so much to see and do, Amsterdam makes for a rewarding stay before or after cruising.

At Sea

Relax and enjoy the facilities and entertainment onboard your ship. If the weather is good take some sun and sunbathe on the pool deck. Otherwise explore below deck the wide range of activities that will be available during the day. Perhaps you prefer to find a quiet spot and catch up on your reading.

As one of the most environmentally-sound ships at sea, MSC Virtuosa is a role model for modern cruising

MSC Virtuosa is the fourth in the line's popular Meraviglia Class of ships and the second Meraviglia-plus class ship (the first is MSC Grandiosa), which means it's bigger, has more features onboard and can carry a whopping 6,200 passengers at full occupancy. For cruisers who like a big ship experience with large production shows, multiple drinking and eating venues and always something going on, day and night, topped with a European flair, then this is the ship for you. And for cruisers who are perhaps put off by all that commotion and want more of a sophisticated experience at sea, then Virtuosa could also be the ship for you. How so? The MSC Yacht Club -- the keycard access-only, all-suite enclave across three decks at the front of the ship, complete with lounge, restaurant and sun deck -- which for our money, is one of the best splurges at sea.

The ship is vast, and when you are in the main promenade, the Galleria Virtuosa, it's quite possible to forget you are even on a ship. Galleria Virtuosa is lined with shops, bars and restaurants across two decks, and topped with an extraordinary 80-meter-long LED ceiling display, which changes throughout the day. At one end is the triple-deck atrium, where you'll find more bars, all connected by a criss-cross set of stairs studded with Swarovski crystal. It's a feast for the senses, and simultaneously stunning and overwhelming, especially for the first-timer.

Compared with American-based lines such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, there are not the large number of speciality dining venues to choose from, just a handful of tried-and-tested ones including an American steakhouse, Butcher's Cut; a Mexico-themed restaurant, Hola! Tacos; and a Teppanyaki/sushi bar, Kaito Teppanyaki. You also won't find quite as many high-adrenaline activities as you would on those lines, such as go-karting, simulated surfing or bumper cars, but the ship does have a waterpark and a ropes course, as well as a fantastic games arcade. One area MSC in general leads the way, and Virtuosa is no exception, are the family facilities, from the LEGO-themed kids club, to the onboard activities, family cabins, mealtimes and sports court, this ship is like a giant playground for kids of all ages.

Tech plays a big part in the MSC Virtuosa experience, and you are encouraged to download the MSC for Me app, which allows you to make bookings in restaurants, shows and the spa, keep track of your booked activities and your onboard spending, as well as keep track of your kids. You'll also be presented with a wristband that acts as your cruise card, so it opens your door and pays for drinks and onboard purchases, like a SmartWatch. Virtuosa delivers across the board, whether that's for kids or adults, families or couples: it's fun, frenetic and fabulous.

Boasting a large arena for a wide variety of sporting activities and games the Sportplex offers a space for young guests to get involved with some sporting events

Daytime Fun

Though you won't find the headline-grabbing attractions you find on the American big ships, MSC Virtuosa has plenty to keep you occupied during the day including two large pools, an indoor Solarium with hot tubs, top-deck waterslides, a ropes course, basketball and football tournaments in the Sports Complex and all manner of fun in the Games Arcade, including a 4D cinema where you don 3D glasses and shoot zombies, a VR maze, two F1 simulators and two bowling lanes.  *Tip: Note all the activities in the Games Arcade carry a charge and rather than pay-as-you-go, we recommend getting a Fun Pass card.*

Le Grande Theater

The 975-person, Broadway-style theatre at the front of the ship hosts several different shows a week, twice a night. Most of these are revue-style performances with lots of energetic dancing and music through the ages or themes, such as a Moulin Rouge-style Paris-themed show, or one set in New York. As MSC caters for multiple nationalities most of these shows don't have much dialogue but rely on great singing, dancing and often acrobatics. The show runs twice a night, timed to fit in with meal times and guests are encouraged to book (it's free, it's just for capacity restrictions).

Carousel Lounge

MSC has created two outstanding new shows to fill this space after a tie-up with Cirque du Soleil ended during the pandemic. Drawing heavily on Cirque-style and aesthetic, both productions showcase dancing, acrobatics, juggling and astonishing moves such as "walking" perpendicular to the walls (on ropes). There is no real plot or dialogue, it's more about loosely knit set pieces showing off the extraordinary skills of the artists. Arkymea is themed around a nutty professor and his various experiments, which manage to combine some quite astonishing gravity-defying body-popping as well as some extraordinary steel cube spinning; Ajedrez has a chess theme, combined with rock music. Two opposing queens challenge each other to win the king's heart. Throughout the story, you meet the various characters of the chess board, from bishops to knights, characterized by life-size statues, as the teams battle it out to the sound of a ticking chess clock. At 45-minutes long, these are also ideal for kids of any age. There is also a small fee, which includes a drink. *Tip: Limited seats means this is worth booking ahead.*

Red Gem Casino is toward the back of the ship on Deck 7, split in two by a walkway that leads to the Carousel Lounge. There is a circular bar in the centre and gaming tables and slots on both sides. *Tip: Promotions take place every day; check your Daily Program for details.*

Galleria Virtuosa

This is the heart and soul of the ship, where there is always something going on night or day. Split across two decks, here you will find the majority of shops, bars and restaurants. MSC Virtuosa has the largest retail space at sea with a variety of shops including a logo shop, an essentials shop, duty-free and a number of high-end watch, jewellery and handbag stores. Listen out for the "events" often announced over the PA or in your Daily Planner for BOGO offers and deep discounts, usually toward the end of the cruise. But look up for the real standout -- a truly stunning 80m, ever-changing LED ceiling where different scenes are projected throughout the day and where there is a Dome Show at set times in the evening. It's breathtaking. The Galleria is also where the ship's biggest theme parties take place such as Flower Power or Space-themed nights in which the animation team stand on podiums dressed up encouraging passengers to get up and dance as a DJ spins tunes from one of the walkways across the promenade (note this is currently quite a muted affair due to COVID restrictions). You'll also find master chocolatier Jean Philippe Maury's chocolate shop and café, where you can pick up a chocolate ship if you wish; and opposite an ice-cream stand selling gelato and crepes.

Bars & Nightlife

MSC Virtuosa is no slouch when it comes to nightlife -- there are at least 10 places to drink till late spread across the ship. The majority are along or just off the main promenade and Atrium, which is where almost all the night-time action takes place.

Heart of the Action: Virtuosa Bar. This is a prime spot just outside the Theater, where you'll find a dance floor and constant crowds of people. It also gives you a great spot for the events that take place most nights in the Galleria Virtuosa.

For a Sing-Song: TV Studio and Bar. You'll find a stage and karaoke most nights.

For Something Different: MSC Starship Club Bar, in which Rob the Robotic Bartender will serve you up a cocktail of your choice -- plus you get a free plastic glass. It's gimmicky and over-priced, but fun.

For Something Elegant: The Champagne Bar. Wrapped around the Atrium, with its Swarovski crystal staircases, this is the place to dress up, come for a pre- or post-dinner Champagne and do some people-watching or have your picture taken. It's very blingy.

For a Pint n' Fish n' Chips: Masters of the Sea Pub is an English-style pub which will serve you up a wide range of pints, drafts and bottled beers with a side of fish n' chips. Trivia takes place here most evenings. In a great spot with outside tables overlooking the main promenade.

For a Quiet Drink: The Sky Lounge. This is the one bar that is not on or just off the main promenade, but high up on Deck 17 overlooking the pool deck. There is often a piano and a singer and it's one of the few quiet-ish places onboard. You'll find the cigar room adjacent.

The Aurea Spa at the front of the ship on Deck 7 has 20 treatment rooms and a wonderful Thermal Suite. It's a Balinese spa, with Balinese therapists, so the emphasis is on those treatments, but you'll also find Swedish and Thai, as well as the signature Aure del Mare treatment with shells. Treatments are not cheap -- way more than you'd pay on land, plus there's usually an upsell at the end and also a 15 percent service charge added. You have been warned. Other treatments include anti-cellulite and water treatments in a futuristic-looking pod. Top tip: there are lots of offers, especially on port days, so look out for those in your Daily Program. The Thermal Suite is in our opinion one of the best at sea, with 10 rooms to experience -- two steam rooms (one dark, one light), two saunas (one Finnish, one Mediterranean), a salt room, two relaxation rooms, two aromatherapy rooms, a snow grotto, as well as a walk-through shower and two thalassotherapy pools. You get use of the Thermal Suite if you book a massage, or you can get a daily or weekly pass. The Jean Louis David Salon is at the spa entrance offering haircuts and treatments as well as a wide range of beauty therapies, including manis, pedis, waxing and men's grooming.

In a great spot on Deck 16 overlooking the main pool deck, with brand new equipment and separate rooms for Pilates and yoga. It's well equipped with 14 treadmills, six bikes (three pro and three reclining), cardio equipment, Kinesis and a weights training area. Use of the gym is free, the classes are for a fee. If you plan on taking regular classes, you might want to consider one of the packages on offer. There is a jogging track which encircles the back of the ship on Deck 16, with clearly delineated tracks for walkers and joggers (we also liked that there are no loungers in this area). One lap equals 200 yards (0.33 kilometres).

At the Kaito Sushi Bar you can experience authentic, delicious Asian cuisine prepared on the spot with fresh and high quality ingredients

Included Dining

The quality of the food onboard MSC Virtuosa, both free and for fee, is of a high standard and a lot of it (mozzarella, bread, pasta) is made fresh daily. All meals are included in your fare and if you're on a seven-day cruise you will not be bored if you eat in the main dining room every evening (note, depending on which "Experience" you opt for, you will be assigned a specific dining room), and the buffet during the day, so varied are the food options. However, just for a change, you might wish to try out one of the speciality restaurants, which are not included in your cruise fare, one evening. In all four main dining rooms, dinner is a three- or four-course affair, with a different menu every night, which will always include a freshly made pasta dish and a fish dish. There are also always-available dishes including steamed fish fillet and grilled chicken breast. There is also a suggested Healthy Option menu, complete with calories, fat, carbs and protein. Twice a cruise there is a gala dinner, which ups the ante even higher. The Executive Chef will prepare a five-course menu which might include cream of asparagus and beef consomme to start and herb-crusted tenderloin or pan-seared salmon as entrees.

Marketplace Buffet

If you're after a quick casual bite, then the buffet is open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout the day and into the early hours. Pasta, bread and mozzarella (made in a machine at the entrance) are made fresh daily. There will always be some sort of regional cuisine on offer as well as salads, pizza, a daily roast, burgers, soups and grilled fish and chicken. For dessert, you'll find sweets and cheeses on offer. Note that the buffet is not self-serve, you simply point to the dish you want and are served. Same with drinks.

Speciality Restaurants

Unlike the big U.S. cruise ships, there are relatively few fee dining options, but what the ship lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. There's no need to eat in these, but if you wanted a change and you craved a specific cuisine or you have an occasion to celebrate, it might be fun to try one. The line also offers a Dining Package, which includes three restaurants at a set price which you can buy onboard or before you set sail. *Tip: Check your MSC for Me app to see what special offers these restaurants might have on. Sometimes they will throw in a free bottle of wine, especially on the first night or on a port day.*

Indochine ($$$$)

A new-to-the-line venue which is a Vietnamese-French fusion concept, in a beautiful setting nestled at the back of the Bistrot. It's not cheap, but it is definitely the most refined of the five for-fee options, with exceptional service, décor and cuisine. Also note, although it's billed French-Vietnamese fusion, the emphasis is much more on the Asian flavours so expect spring rolls, tom yam soup and pork belly.

Butcher's Cut ($$$$)

This American-style steakhouse gets our vote for one of the best at sea, with a wide range of excellent cuts of meat (Really hungry? Go for the Tomahawk cut), great sides including mac n' cheese and outstanding desserts including lava cake and New York Cheesecake. The red booths and black and white prints on the walls add to the authenticity. There's a great wine list, with some full-bodied reds as a perfect accompaniment. Tip: Opt for the set dining package rather than a la carte which is a lot more expensive.

L'Atelier Bistrot ($$$)

A French-themed bistro off the main promenade serving with French classics, such as pate, vichyssoise and, of course, escargots to start; and moules mariniere, boeuf bourguignon and steak frites for mains. There's a small stage and live music most evenings.

Kaito Teppanyaki ($$$)

If you are after a show as well as a meal, then this is for you. Anyone familiar with the Teppanyaki concept -- sitting around a hot plate as your chef creates your meal for you -- will feel right at home. There's egg-throwing, food flipping, utensil juggling and a constant stream of cheesy gags and songs to keep you permanently smiling. Choose from three different set menus, including a veggie-only. The food is great too!

Kaito Sushi ($$)

This is in contrast to the craziness of the teppanyaki, a quiet, authentic sushi bar situated just outside the restaurant, this serves fresh-made sushi at very reasonable prices. Excellent for a light lunchtime option.

HOLA! Tacos ($$)

Another new-to-the-line venue, this Mexican-themed restaurant is fun and reasonably priced and great for a quick bite. It also does mezcal tasting. Not ideal for a romantic night out, but fun if you are in a group.

Our Pick: If you're going to splurge we're torn between Butcher's Cut and Kaito Teppanyaki. Butcher's Cut gets our vote for truly top-notch steak in a refined setting and would be ideal for a couple. Kaito Teppanyaki has great Asian cuisine and is so much fun for families with young kids.

MSC Yacht Club Royal Suite

There are numerous different room types onboard Virtuosa, as well as different "experiences" (see below) unique to MSC, so how do you choose the right one? There are three basic cabin types (this is applicable to all cruise ships): Inside, Outside, Balcony. Everything else is a variation on this, including the suites, of which there is a wide range. Note also, MSC Virtuosa has the MSC Yacht Club, an exclusive area, similar in many ways to an Executive Lounge in a top hotel, but even fancier -- think all-suite, private dining, private lounge and a top-deck sun deck, only for Yacht Club guests (see below). Expect everything you would expect in a hotel room, just in a smaller space. (A standard cabin on Virtuosa is 204 square feet. By contrast, a typical hotel room in the U.S. is around 330 square feet.)

All cabins have a double bed that can be divided into two (except the 12 solo cabins which have a single bed), interactive TV, wardrobe, fridge, sofa, fixed desk and stool and numerous charging and USB points (including two hidden below the light fixture by the side of your bed). Virtuosa also boasts a desktop AI assistant called Zoe, which doubles as a Bluetooth speaker.

All standard cabins have a shower room with a shower stand with glass doors, a footrest for leg shaving and a clothesline for drying. You'll find generic shampoo and gel in fixed dispensers in the shower. There is a single basin with a fixed soap dispenser and a small cupboard with shelves.  There are also 55 accessible cabins.

Solos: If you're travelling solo, opt for one of 12 Interior Studios, which are 129 square feet.

On a budget: Interior. These are 172 square feet and there are 650. Bookable with Bella and Fantastica experiences only.

Splash: If your budget stretches to it, we would recommend a balcony cabin on Deck 8, which are 5 sq feet bigger than those on Decks 9-13.

Splurge: Opt for a Yacht Club cabin (*Tip: all cabins are all billed as suites but there are a number of interiors that come in at considerably less cost than the balcony cabins, but you still get all the YC perks*).

Family: There are 175 interconnected cabins and three cabin types designated as family. We recommend the aft-facing family suites, which come with bunk beds, bath and a balcony.

Special: The Duplex Suite. There are just eight of these, all located at the front of decks 9 and 10, and 12 and 13, and come in at 559 square feet. And would suit a family or two couples sharing.

Experiences

MSC differs from all other cruise lines in the way it sells its cabins, preferring to offer "Experience" types rather than sell by cabin size or type, and it's worth noting that some cabins are only available with specific experiences. Each one of these experiences comes with a different range of perks and benefits. *

Bella: Represents a value-for-money cruise that includes all meals, entertainment, activities and your preferred choice of dinner seating (subject to availability). *

Fantastica: Layers on extra perks, such as 24-hour room service, priority choice of dinner seating and cabins on the upper decks. *

Aurea: Includes even more extras, including an all-inclusive beverage package, a spa package that includes a welcome cocktail, one massage of your choice, wellness consultation and free access to the Thermal Suite and the flexible My Choice dining priority boarding and cabins on the upper decks.

MSC Yacht Club

Special mention must be made to the MSC Yacht Club, which on Virtuosa (and sister ships), the line has taken it to a whole new level, dedicating three decks at the top and front of the ship to this exclusive enclave. The space includes a large lounge area with a bar and food and drinks served all day; a dining room for YC guests only and a top-deck sun deck with a small pool and a hot tub, plenty of loungers and a bar serving food and drink throughout the day. Fares can vary, but in general, cabins in the Yacht Club cost double what you'd spend on a regular cabin. So why should you upgrade? The list is long, and includes: all drinks included, all meals in the private dining room, butler service, priority boarding and private island extras. And also that intangible feeling of being very well looked after and away from the crowds on what can be a very busy ship.

Who goes on MSC Cruises cruise ships?

MSC Cruises is one of the most diverse cruise lines you can sail on with a multicultural mix of Italians, Brits, Spanish, Germans and French in the Mediterranean, with more North Americans in the Caribbean (but still lots of Italians and Spanish-speaking passengers), and a big local market in South Africa and South America. You'll also come across all ages. The lively night scene means these ships work well for teens and younger cruisers, while the decent kids' clubs (particularly on the newer ships) and the clever arrangements of clustered family cabins mean a lot of families travel during school holidays.

Do I have to dress up on a MSC Cruises cruise?

Yes, a little. The usual dress code is informal during the day and smart-casual at night -- think nice trousers and shirt for men and nice pants/skirts with blouse or cocktail dress for women. There's usually one gala night per cruise, when black tie or dark suit and tie are encouraged for men, as is a formal dress for women. This is not enforced, but people do make an effort.

Is everything free on MSC Cruises cruises?

No, unless you're in one of the Yacht Club suites, and even then, not everything is included. MSC sells its cruises through a somewhat bewildering array of packages: Bella, Fantastica, Aurea and Yacht Club. All include your accommodation, meals in specified restaurants and big-stage entertainment, along with basic coffee and tea, and select juices at breakfast and lunch. Beyond that, perks and inclusions vary by which package you've purchased, with Bella having no additional inclusions and Aurea featuring unlimited beverages. The Yacht Club has the most inclusions, with extra dining venues for eating, spa thermal suite passes and most beverages (plus access to a personal butler and a dedicated Yacht Club lounge and pool).

What are MSC Cruises's most popular activities?

The action onboard an MSC ship is nonstop, with cruisers flocking to participate in pool games, sports contests, shopping promotions, trivia, karaoke and filling the nightclubs until late. On newer ships, high-tech arcade games are all the rage, including a 4D cinema, laser maze, F1 simulator and bowling. Many MSC cruisers are also just as happy to park themselves by a pool and stay there all day, and when the ship is in port, you'll find the vast majority of cruisers off the ship on ship-sponsored or independent tours.

MSC Cruises - Embarkation Day in Southampton (May 2023)

In May 2023, we boarded MSC Virtuosa as first time MSC cruisers. This was also the first time we sailed from the new Horizon Cruise Terminal. We're experienced cruisers, with P&O being our favoured cruise line, but we have also cruised with Princess and Holland America Line. As new to MSC cruisers, we found parts of the embarkation process to be a little overwhelming and confusing, so hopefully this guide will help others in a similar position.

If you enjoy our blog posts and want to see more of our content, don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel and follow us on Instagram , Twitter and Facebook .

We downloaded and used the MSC for Me app prior to boarding to allow us to check in. This app is similar to those used by other cruise lines, enabling you to enter your passport details etc in advance, so that the process is faster at the terminal. MSC for Me is available via your App Store and you can login in either using your MSC Voyagers account or cruise booking information. Once you're in, you'll have a cruise countdown on your homepage. You will also have access to book excursions, check in, and prebook other items such as drinks and dining packages.

Screenshot of home page of MSC for Me app

We were able to complete the initial check in information which included passport details, emergency contact information and insurance information but couldn't get the app to accept our credit card details. From viewing MSC Facebook groups, we discovered that this is a common issue and we had no problem adding a credit card once onboard.

Arriving in Southampton

We initially had a boarding time of 2pm but this was updated close to our sailing date and became 12pm. MSC start boarding early, so if you're used to other cruise lines such as P&O Cruises, don't be surprised to receive a 10am slot with MSC. When we arrived at Horizon Cruise Terminal, the only way to describe it was chaotic. We arrived pretty much bang on our boarding time, but in all honesty it wouldn't have mattered. Nobody checked any paperwork, and there were no staff directing passengers into queues. We later learnt that the queues had really built up by 12 and had we arrived a bit earlier and ignored the time we were given, we'd have had a much smoother boarding experience.

Queues of people waiting outside Horizon Cruise Terminal

We joined a large queue to hand over our luggage, then continued on in the same queue so that we could enter the terminal building. At Horizon, security is set up on the ground floor. Here you will go through security, where your hand luggage backs are scanned. After this, you can head on up to check in. We then had to join a third queue, this time to get to the check in desks. Some guests were randomly being pulled out of this queue and sent straight to the priority check in desk. There didn't appear to be any qualifying criteria for this, the member of staff just seemed to pull out random groups.

All in all, we were queuing for about an hour outside and a further 20 minutes inside the building. As we'd completed most of our details via the MSC for Me app, the check in process itself was very fast. Cruise cards were handed to us at the check in desk and we were able to proceed onto the ship. It's also worth noting that this was a full sailing, during UK school holidays, so there were just over 6000 passengers embarking on this date, with over 2000 of them being children.

Onboard the Ship

As previously mentioned, we weren't able to register a credit card prior to boarding. Unlike every cruise line we've sailed with previously, they don't complete this step for you at the check in desk. Once onboard, there are numerous machines. Most of these are around the atrium area, where you register your card yourself. You can also load cash onto your cruise card at these machines. The machines closest to the gangway had large queues, but if you took the time to go up a flight of stairs or two, there were some quieter machines. You have to complete this step before you can order anything onboard, even if you have a drinks package, so understandably everybody was trying to get this done straight away.

We had a small issue with our credit card registration but it wasn't major. We wanted to register one card for both of us, but the member of staff helping us directed us to untick the box to allow this. This meant we had to return and register the same card for the other person and we ended up with two separate charges to the card after the cruise instead of just one.

A cruise card activation point onboard MSC Virtuosa.

Overall, the embarkation process could have been smoother. The main issue for us was the lack of communication. Along with lots of others, we had to join a queue without knowing what it was for and hope for the best. Luckily, it was the correct queue. However, the group in front of us ended up queuing twice as there was no separate queue to check in if you'd previously dropped your luggage off. Horizon Cruise Terminal is a nice, modern building and once we were inside, we found it to be set up well. Regular cruisers will know that there is always debate regarding embarkation times. We think there needs to be a middle ground between MSC's free for all approach, and P&O's very strict if you aren't right on time you aren't coming in approach.

If you want to know more abut our embarkation experience, we talk about it in our Day 1 Vlog over on our YouTube channel, check it out below.

MSC Cruises sailing year-round from Southampton

Msc sails from uk & offers fly-cruise packages from uk airports.

MSC Cruises has always been a game-changer in the cruise industry and that’s one of the reasons why they have so many loyal guests. A cruise line that offers luxury and adventure, but often at a lower cost than their competitors. The MSC Cruises fleet is vast and varied, and each ship offers something different. All are great for family cruise holidays, but they’re equally as good for couples and solo travellers – especially on no-fly departures directly from the UK.

MSC Magnifica top deck

MSC Magnifica Pool Deck

Summer 2022 no-fly cruises aboard MSC Magnifica are proving hugely popular, and they’re backed by the introduction of MSC Virtuosa – sailing from Southampton from April 29 th . She will begin with a mini-cruise to Guernsey before embarking on a Mediterranean sailing – her final of the season – which will depart Southampton on November 4th. MSC Preziosa will arrive in October and offer UK cruisers several sailings right through until April 2023. We have some great deals available right now on MSC Cruises March and April last minute departures – check out our deals page for more info.

For those of you hoping for a fly-cruise option, then look no further than MSC Cruises’ Mediterranean and Greek Isles cruises this summer. Again, there are great offers available and amazing destinations to head into and explore. Destinations include Genoa, Messina, Palermo, Santorini, Barcelona, Valletta and more. We must admit that we love a summer cruise in the Mediterranean. The smells, sounds and overall vibrancy of the region really shine through. It’s a busy time and that does mean more people, but it’s also when the best events and markets are also showcased.

MSC Cruises to the Greek Islands

MSC Cruises to the Greek Isles

When it comes to winter sun, MSC Cruises have that covered too! The Caribbean is calling, and we think it would be rude of you not to answer. You can sail aboard several ships, including MSC Divina , MSC Seascape, MSC Meraviglia and MSC Seaside . The entire region is covered! Sailings range from 7-to-15-nights and can be extended by booking back-to-back sailings or even choosing to extend pre-or-post cruise with a land-based stay. Our experts can advise on this at the time of booking. The majority of Caribbean sailings with MSC Cruises depart from either Miami or Port Canaveral, but those aboard MSC Meraviglia depart from Bridgetown in Barbados.

Don’t forget, MSC Cruises offer several experience options onboard: Bella, Fantastica and Aurea. There’s also the MSC Yacht Club. Each offers something slightly different – from upgraded cabins to priority boarding. Whatever you choose with MSC will not leave you disappointed, but at least you do have the option to upgrade your onboard experience should you wish to do so. There are also speciality dining options to enjoy. These do incur an additional charge, but they are worth it, and we highly recommend them.

MSC Magnifica 2022

Packages are available on fly-cruise options and all sailings can be upgraded to all-inclusive. In fact, the all-inclusive options currently available for MSC Magnifica are selling fast, but to benefit from these big savings, you must book before the end of March 2022 – these offers are limited.
