Launched 26 years ago already, the Maldives 32 was so avant-garde that it remains current today, both in terms of design and performance. In short, a very attractive, compact catamaran... providing you can adapt to a fairly Spartan atmosphere.

In 1988, the launch of the Maldives 32 made an impression: it was very different from the English cats, such as the Iroquois or the Snowgoose... and even compared to the Louisiane, a metre longer, the Joubert/Nivelt designed boat looked like an ultra-modern UFO. The almost vertical bows for a maximum waterline length, and the very ‘curvy’ superstructure prefigured today’s catamarans. Here then is a model which appears younger than its age, especially as the gelcoat lasts rather well. When it’s time to get under way, you get the first surprise: no ignition or engine controls for the diesels...there aren’t any! The builder actually opted for a simple outboard motor mounted on a bracket and a block and tackle system – even sometimes a second one, to tilt the engine’s shaft. Here you will understand that the Maldives 32, despite its very nice appearance, hides a very basic personality. Finally, this is perhaps not the least of its charms... Yes, the crisis has (already) taken its toll... And regular maintenance, or even replacement, of an outboard doesn’t represent much compared with two diesels... Of course, manoeuvres are trickier – obviously you can’t reverse both engines – and t...

Seller's Description

The Maldives 32 is a great boat, unlike many catamarans she is amazingly fast in light weather, you will have no difficulty keeping up with any cruiser up to 45 feet and yet she is roomy and comfortable. She offers great privacy for two couples or can accommodate a family of five with all the children getting a cabin of their own.

The Maldives 32 was designed and built to cruise placidly through the Canal du Midi or beat to windward through a Biscay gale. With 55m² of sail area this is a fast boat which can hit 9 knots on a reach. She is remarkably comfortable with one head and a large panoramic deck saloon. The galley is situated laterally across the aft part of the saloon area. The liftable roof panel considerably increases headroom in the passageway.

Her styling was way ahead of its time and with her plumb stems she looks right up to date. The twin keels mean that she can be run very economically from a drying mooring and is at home up a muddy creek as she is reaching across the English Channel at over 9 Knots. For the more adventurous she is capable of transiting the Canal de Midi and can therefore reach the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea without crossing Biscay, though she is equally as capable of that.

We have owned Ciel Bleu for fifteen years and have come to love her for both her looks and performance and her practicality. However it is now time for us to move on and we have bought a larger Fountaine Pajot. We are confident that you will find her more appealing internally than any Maldives currently on the market and that her new owners will come to appreciate the many virtues of the design.

She has been fitted out for cross channel rather than long term cruising and has been kept light for fast passage times. During our ownership we have made a number of improvements and have listed them below. The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

Wonderful experience!, Our guide was awesome!

This was an epic experience. Captain Thomas and Ellie were amazing people that were very knowledgeable on the area and provided hospitality that was second to none. The food was fantastic and the being able to see the different beaches and the hot springs were the highlight of this trip. Run don't walk to book this.

We had a wonderful time with Ellie and Thomas. We were a bit worried as we had a young child (3yo) and an older grandpa with low mobility, but they were so attentive and thoughtful, even suggesting small changes to the end of the day to make disembarking easier and faster which worked a treat. Extra points because we only booked with 2 hours notice! The boat itself was lovely, saw all the sights and swam with a bunch of fish! Also the food was fantastic! Anything Ellie cooks for you, you must eat! Ellie kept the drinks flowing as well, wine was great, and Thomas’ knowledge of santorini was excellent. Highly recommend

Broker's Comments

If you like comfortable, fast sailing then this is the boat for you. A good example of one of the earlier Fountaine Pajots, it has been updated a great deal in the current ownership, including a new engine in 2018, new solar panels, new fridge, new batteries, new rudder bearings, the list goes on. The current owners are experienced ocean crossers, having sailed their last Catamaran to Australia. They had similar plans for this one but their plans have had to change.

She sails beautifully, easily accommodates a family and the novel 'pop top' gives a boost to the saloon headroom in nice weather. Even if you have never hankered after a multihull but want a safe, fast and comfortable family boat then this is well worth a look, it could change your mind!

Catamaran Maldives 32

Le Maldives 32 est un catamaran de croisière habitable, construit par le chantier naval français Fountaine Pajot. Ce voilier Aileron, en sloop partiel, a été construit par le constructeur naval B. Nivelt, avec un tirant d’eau maximum de 0,90 m. La production a commencé en 1988.

Robuste et maniable, c’est l’un des rares multicoques à ravir les passionnés de monocoques. De par sa stabilité et son confort de navigation, ce navire à l’allure intemporelle est très adapté à la location et très adapté à la navigation côtière. Ce catamaran lancé en 1988 mesure 9,75 m de long et 5,3 m de large, et peut accueillir jusqu’à 8 personnes. Il est disponible en version 2, 3 ou 4 cabines et peut accueillir jusqu’à 6 couchettes. De plus, il est également équipé d’une salle de douche et de toilettes. Le catamaran Maldives 32 est équipé de moteurs Yamaha d’une puissance standard de 70. C’est un type hors-bord et utilise de l’essence comme carburant.

Concernant l’équipement sur le pont, on retrouve un bossoir, une plateforme AR, et un génois escamotable pour faciliter le déploiement des voiles. Le catamaran Maldives 32 est homologué classe A dans la catégorie conception, il résistera à des vents inférieurs à 47 nœuds et à des vagues inférieures à 10 mètres. Cependant, si le nombre de personnes atteint sa capacité maximale, il passera en catégorie de conception C, ce qui signifie que s’il rencontre des vents supérieurs à 27 nœuds et des vagues supérieures à 4 mètres, il ne pourra pas résister…

Lancé il y a 26 ans déjà, le Maldives 32 était tellement avant-gardiste qu’il reste dans le coup aujourd’hui, tant en termes de design que de performances. Bref, un cata compact très séduisant… A condition de savoir s’accommoder d’une ambiance un peu roots.

En 1988, le lancement du Maldives 32 marque les esprits : on est loin du design des catas anglais comme l’Iroquois ou les Snowgoose… et même, comparé au Louisiane, pourtant plus long d’un mètre, le plan Joubert/Nivelt fait figure d’OVNI ultra-moderne. Ses étraves presque droites pour une flottaison maximum et ses superstructures tout en courbes préfigurent le cata d’aujourd’hui. Voici donc un modèle qui fait moins que son âge, d’autant que le gel coat tient plutôt bien. A l’heure de mettre en route, c’est la première surprise : pas de contact ni de poignée de gaz pour les diesel… il n’y en a pas ! Le chantier a en effet opté pour un simple moteur horsbord monté sur une chaise et un système de palan – et même parfois un deuxième pour incliner l’arbre d’hé lice. C’est là que vous comprendrez que le Maldives 32, malgré ses airs très   "comme il faut", cache une personnalité très roots. Au final, ce n’est peut-être pas le moindre de ses charmes… Eh oui, la crise est (déjà) passée par là... Et l’entretien courant, voire le remplacement d’un hors-bord, ça ne représente pas grand-chose comparé à deux diesel… Certes, les manoeuvres sont plus délicates – pas de possibilité d’inverser les...
