Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Pogo 8.50 is about 205 kg/cm, alternatively 1148 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 205 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1148 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

Hello everyone,

I am the proud owner of an 8.50 pogo based in Port Laforêt … i’m looking for a system that allows me to easily raise my mooring without too much trouble … what are your tips?

Thank you all and good luck!

' src=

Unfortunately no tip to share as I’m asking myself the same questions and thinking of installing a small davit on the other side of the outboard end. I installed a Spade 9.5kg 30m of 8mm chain. Not yet tested as I prefer chests… I even considered a manual windlass but hey, it’s heavy for our little boat… 🤪

' src=

Hello, Personally, I don’t have an improved mooring system, I even have the original one, which is the “flying” davit that you attach to the bow pulpit. I’ve considered a removable davit fixed to the bow on demand, but I haven’t taken the plunge as I don’t do much anchoring these days. I remember having seen on the net the fitting of a vertical axis windlass adapted or adaptable to a Pogo 850. I’ll look for it and if I find it I’ll post it on this forum. Sorry for my unconstructive reply,

' src=

No real tricks, just a few precautions: always pass the anchor over the mobile roller (davit) to anchor or leave the anchorage, have a bow fender, raise the anchorage with your legs rather than your arms, with the help of the engine (not too much) and the chop, set the anchor hanging low in the water before spinning the anchor. My anchor is a Lewmar Delta (the FOB THP delivered with the boat slipped too easily the first year) with the original anchor line (17m of 8mm chain and 30m of cable), it held in 30 knots of wind and 3m of water in Corsica. I also have a Fortress with 30m of leaded cable for short-term mooring. Caution: especially in light airs, the boat avoids rough seas in a way that is quite different from standard production boats, so keep some margin.

If possible, have a young person lift the anchor (I’m 75)! best regards, Jean-François Perrouty, Saint Damien, Toulon

We published an article on the site about fitting a windlass on the Pogo 8.50, written by a member who has since asked me to delete his account, having sold his boat:

https://www.assopogo.net/un-guindeau-sur-le-pogo-8-50/

In the absence of a windlass, a light anchor like the 7kg aluminum squade is very effective, and that’s what I have on my Pogo 10.50. To reduce the weight of the chain, you can use grade 70 in 6mm (0.82kg/m), which is probably sufficient for a Pogo 8.50: 25m (or even 40m) plus rope, it allows you to see ahead.

Emmanuel found the article I was referring to, thanks to him.

I also found an assembly on Pogo 850 where the windlass is housed in the anchor locker, here is the link to access it:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/voilieravendre/permalink/1052458758488366/

Good luck to Dominique

I should add that in the comments to the article https://www.assopogo.net/un-guindeau-sur-le-pogo-8-50/, there’s a link to 5 photos of an even different windlass installation.

Thank you all, very informative 🙂 Have a nice sunny weekend jm

Hello Dominique,

Like you, I own an 8.50 pogo based in Concarneau.

i find it difficult to raise the anchor and also to pass it between the balcony and the forestay,

i haven’t looked into a more practical system, as I don’t usually stay at anchor for very long (fear of hunting…)

the best trick I found was to get my cousin on board! He’s a great help.

Happy sailing Dominique, maybe we’ll meet on the water (my boat is red, it’s called Bigorn’ô)

' src=

I also use my muscular little arms, but when you’re solo at anchor, anything over 10 knots becomes sporty. Same recommendations, protect the bow. Spade anchor 10 kg, with chain 6, recommended by Spade. It slips less than the 14 kg FOB with 8 chain from before. I also have an aluminum anchor with cable (for regattas when you really need it).

if anyone has a miracle solution, not heavy, easy, let us know..

' src=

There’s no miracle solution, but a word of advice: pull up the anchor slowly, finally getting quite far from the bow. It works pretty well. Obviously, the engine is on and not engaged :-). If there’s a lot of wind, you can temporarily double the anchor with a light anchor with a weighted end, which is very easy to raise once the main anchor is up.

' src=

Me on Babar, here’s my gear.

– fixed forceps

– 1 FOB THP 10 kg anchor in the bail

– 27m of 8″ chain

– 30m cable

– a 12kg Kobra 2 in the rear trunk, which I use to replace the other one when I know the wind is going to be strong.

The boat is in Greece, and I sailed for over 4 months in 2020 to get it there, which means a lot of anchorages.

But I’d like to install a manual windlass with winch. I had this before on my old first 32 and it’s perfect. I’m thinking of installing it just to the right of the forestay attachment.

What do you think?

French builders of POGO line. Chantier Naval Structures ZA de Kerbénoën 29120 Combrit Ste-Marine France History from company website: 1987 - The yard Structures is based in Quimper (Finistère), by Christian Bouroullec. 1990 - The company expanded and moved to Combrit-Sainte-Marine. Bertrand De Broc, Catherine Chabaud, Dominic Bourgeois, Marc Guillemot or Eric Drouglazet come to build or prepare their boats. 1995 - The construction designs the Pogo 6.50 with the architect Pierre Rolland. Extended prototype Amnesty International, winner of the Mini-Transat 1993 at the hands of Thierry Dubois, the Pogo is proven off by participating in the Mini-Transat 1995. In seven years of production, 140 copies are built and sailed from around the world. 1999 - Christian Bouroullec won the Mini-Transat (series category) at the helm of Pikès. In the same year is launched on Pogo 8.50, a new plan Rolland inspired by his eldest able to bring the family cruise AND surf swell of the Atlantic at high speed. Just launched, the first 8.50 Pogo won the solo Transquadra 2000. At Grand Pavois in La Rochelle, he was elected “Sailboat of the year 2001”. At the helm of a 8.50 Pogo, Christian Bouroullec ranks 5th in the Transquadra 2001. More than one hundred copies are now built or on order. 2003 - Pogo Pogo 2 succeeds 6.50. Designed by Jean-Marie Finot and Pascal Conq, he conquered the first three places in the Transat 6.50 (series category) a few months later. Faithful to the tradition home, that Erwan Tymen employee of the company, who is the winner at the helm of the boat yard, Casimir. Since 1997, all editions of the Transat 6.50 saw the victory of a Pogo. Each month, two new Pogo 2 were launched. 2005 - The fourth model Pogo emerged: a new plan Finot-Conq 40 feet, Pogo 40. Fruit of the experience of the site in terms of race and large, it is designed for the big trip and the high speed, a concept that we are advocating for over 10 years. Several copies of Pogo 40 should be aligned at the start of the Route du Rhum, in 2006. 2006 - This year was marked by the presence of 4 Pogo 40 of the first 5 boats from the finish of the Route du Rhum and the absolute record 24 hours of the Mini Class establishes a Pogo 2.

Comparative analysis of First 27.7 and Pogo 8.50

After our tests of the First 27.7 prototype, we is in a hurry to confirm, judging by one of the first copies of the series, the validity of the choice in relation to this innovative vessel. Le Pogo 830, the benchmark for modern cruisers of this size, has proven to be a good sailor.

Moored side by side at one pontoon, it is difficult for these yachts to go unnoticed. And it’s not just their attire: yellow, almost lemon-colored First 27.7 and incredible almond green Pogo 8.50. The focus on these two cruisers is indicative of a renewed interest in multi-purpose yachts among sailors.

The size of these yachts allows for easy handling by a small crew, however the interior space is quite spacious and is quite suitable for a family cruise. Designed without any classification restrictions for racing yachts, these glorious walkers are capable of seducing regatta enthusiasts as well.

To implement their ambitious plans, the creators of these two yachts, Pierre Rolland – the author of Pogo, and the design bureau Groupe Finot – constructor 27.7, logically agreed in the same solution of many technical issues, which gave their creations an amusing family resemblance. Both vessels make the most of the hull length thanks to the vertical stem and trimmed transom, where there is no oversight.

Also, both designers came to the decision to divide the cockpit into two zones: the bow, narrower, for the crew, and the aft part of the cockpit, wider, reserved for the helmsman. The similarities do not end there, the layout below deck is very similar: a wardroom, a two-seater bow sofa, a card table that can be used while standing, a galley opposite.

Also, both boats are equipped with large aft cabins, which are located mainly under the cockpit on the starboard side, and a latrine is equipped on the port side. But apart from these similarities, both yachts have their own characteristics and differences.

The “trick” of the Pogo yacht is its incredible width: 3.60 m – the width of the boat and it will look like a big yacht. Looking at the boats from the side, you cannot say that the Pogo is only 20 cm longer than the First. In turn, the originality of the First is undoubtedly in its lifting keel, which allows you to change the draft from 0.62 m to 2.15 m, neither more, nor smaller! And then, their appearance also makes a different impression. Le Pogo does not hide its origin, its underwater part is made like the hulls for the Mini Transat. First, however, remains true to the tradition of cruising and racing yachts, as intended by its designer.

However, for all its seeming simplicity, we find a good cockpit with teak cans, covered with coamings from the outside. While the Pogo draws attention with its imposing and chunky deckhouse, First displays its classically elegant style with gold accents that accentuate the curvature of the hull and deckhouse.

We can’t wait to see if we are dealing with just different design styles, or whether these two yachts are different in nature. On the eve of the tests, the forecast promised rain. There is no rain. There is no gennaker at 27.7, it’s a shame. In this case, both boats are not equally equipped. Pogo has a regatta set of sails, the First 27.7 has only a cruise sail. And in this situation, it is quite difficult to make a comparison. On one side there are Kevlar sails, on the other, a regular dacron. For First, this is a clear minus that threatens to lag seriously.

Sad of course, but what to do? Fresh breeze and peeping rays of the sun rush us to go out to sea. A few minutes after leaving the channel, both crews reasonably decide to lower their sails. With winds over 20 knots, it is not easy to sail under full sail. But even before the corrugation of the sails, both boats, despite a decent heel, always remained under the control of the helmsmen. First took one shelf of reefs, and one of the crew, staying at the mast, fixes the mainsail in a new position.

The process of corrugating the sails on the Pogo takes longer because the mainsail was left full and the staysail was replaced. But the lost time was quickly made up by the efficiency of the new staysail, and the two yachts converged on the small island of Meaban. We set a course for the entrance to the Gulf, or rather, to the Orei River. The wind is gusty here, but the sea is calmer, which makes it easier to work with a spinnaker. After a couple of voices back and forth, we walk along the oyster plantation, keeping in mind the large draft First.

Our assumptions regarding the sail difference came true and Pogo, with regatta sails, quickly took the lead over First. Moreover, the advantage on the side-hauled course is expressed more in speed than in the sharpness of the course. The next day we were convinced of the good abilities of First 27.7 on full courses and excellent germination on the wave. With an equal sail area (one reef on the mainsail on both yachts and a spinnaker), but a smaller crew size, 27.7 remained out of reach for Pogo.

The First 27.7 on its cruising sails certainly lost on the beydewind course (on a one mile passage more than a minute of break). Regatta season will undoubtedly fix these first impressions. However, we appreciated the First 27.7’s ability to stay on course and its excellent stability on full course. Pogo, in turn, did not disappoint our hopes on a collision course. This boat is difficult to compete on sharp courses. Pogo 8.50 showed excellent yachting results in the last Transquadra Solo regatta.

At port as well as at sea, each of these two yachts has its own character. The First 27.7 looks more confident with its long cockpit and aft boom shoulder, but the shape of the deckhouse suggests that this boat is used more for outing and coastal racing than for cruises on the high seas. It is more of a family yacht, despite the keel lifting system.

The Pogo yacht, being longer and wider, is therefore more expensive. Her deck resembles the deck of a cruising yacht. It is a great fast walker capable of crossing oceans, despite the fact that filling the hull with foam, which ensures unsinkability, significantly reduces living space. These are the main features of these two modern yachts that give us the joy of sailing.

Pogo 8.50, ready for the open sea!

pogo 8.50 sailboatdata

How to choose your second-hand sailboat? This week the Pogo 8.50, one of the glories of the structural worksite. Designed by Pierre Rolland, this cruising sailboat kicked the ants out with a very wide baud and a minimalist finish to increase performance. A sailboat that has taken its owners on miles.

Emmanuel Van Deth

  • Price from 45 000 euros.
  • But most of the well-equipped models trade around 55,000/60,000 euros... despite the release of the Pogo 30.
  • Product from 1999 to 2010

With its very wide hull, this Rolland design shows superb downwind ease in strong winds. It glides, flat and flat - up to 17 knots -, without putting much strain on the pilot. A quality that makes it an ideal support for crossing the Atlantic, especially as the boat is very well built.

Pogo 8.50

But at other points of sail , and especially in light winds, the 850 is no better than other yachts of the same length. This is due to a fairly heavy displacement and a large wetted surface. Inside, to save weight, the shipyard has played the card of stripping: exposed floors without floor, two double berths but no doors, chart table without seat and ultra simple kitchen. Few small stowage spaces, but a vast hold behind the toilet compartment under the cockpit.

Pogo 8.50

The Pogo 8.50 is a marine and rustic sailboat rather reserved for a reduced crew (couple or single-handed) who prefers the pleasures of offshore navigation to those of a stopover . Its only flaw? She keeps a high rating..

Pogo 8.50

The diagnosis of Bateaux.com

In 2000, he was all we talked about! Think about it: a sailing yacht built to eat mile after mile, which does not have the old navy atmosphere, there's no shortage of pontoons... and her unsinkable certification means she is the smallest sailing yacht certified in category A. Enough to have wings to go out to sea.

Pogo 8.50

The advantages

  • Safe and seaworthy sailboat
  • Wide and comfortable cockpit
  • Generous interior volume

Disadvantages

  • No back skirt
  • To sorrow in light weather

Pogo 8.50

But what is he missing?

Nothing. The 8.50 is still an excellent sailboat .

The equivalent today?

His successor the Pogo 30 It's even faster, especially upwind and in light airs.
