If you and your partner love being on the water, then hosting your wedding on a boat may be your dream scenario. This is a unique option for those who love sailing or cruising, or simply want the ultimate venue to fit a nautical theme. Not to mention, the photos of open water views with cityscapes or tropical islands in the distance are sure to be stunning. But if you’re thinking of setting sail on open waters for a wedding ceremony, reception, or both, some additional, specific planning is required.

Planning for a wedding on the water not only means working within the restraints of the specific vessel you want, but it also means taking Mother Nature and changing weather conditions into consideration. Here, we consult expert planners to learn tips, tricks, and the most important things to consider before you set sail and tie the knot.

Consider Time, Location, and Weather

Whether you’re choosing to charter a boat, planning a yacht party, or hosting a wedding reception on a cruise ship, time, location, and weather are important factors to consider. “Weather can have a huge impact on a waterfront or boating event and can change the guest experience and comforts quickly,” says Nick and Aleah Valley, owners of Valley & Company Events .

In your planning, be sure to check on where you’ll be leaving from and what the weather may look like that day. “Many coastal areas have zones where gale force winds can appear quickly and unexpectedly. Having a backup plan for wind and chilly temperatures is imperative,” adds the Valleys. “If it's too windy, some boats or yachts can't sail, which could mean your event is docked or canceled completely until conditions improve.”

Meet the Expert

Nick and Aleah Valley are the founders of Valley & Company Events , an event and wedding planning company based in Seattle, Washington.

Boat Options for Getting Married on the Water

Getting married on a boat can come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. Depending on your guest list and wedding vision, one option may be better than the others. Pricing will vary greatly, depending on the size of the boat, the style, and the region where you’re booking. Yacht and charter boat weddings may only require a fee for use of the vessel, while a cruise ship wedding requires paying for the cruise , along with fees specific to your wedding.

Tips for Yacht Weddings

A wedding reception on a yacht provides the ultimate view for a great celebration! You can choose to either host your ceremony elsewhere and then board the boat, or plan for both your ceremony and reception on the water.

To find the ideal yacht for your wedding, think about guest list size first. “Keep in mind that many states have maritime regulations prohibiting the rental of yachts for events or guest counts past a certain number,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Contacting the local maritime office is a good place to start for suggestions on how to charter a yacht. They may have recommendations for finding a yacht unless you have your own or have a connection to one.”

Once you know that your guest list count is in line with area regulations for a yacht, it’s crucial to consider space to guest ratio as well. Are there enough restrooms to accommodate your group? Is there enough elbow room to allow for a great guest experience?

You’ll also want to check if the yacht has appropriate kitchen facilities for your culinary team to create the perfect menu for your reception, along with space for other necessary rentals.

Tips for Charter Boat Weddings

If you’re hoping to charter a boat for your wedding, keeping size in mind is crucial here, too. Be sure to choose a boat that can accommodate your guest list and your specific needs. It's also important to double-check that the boat you plan to charter will fit the aesthetic and type of reception you're hoping for.

If you’re chartering a boat, insurance will also be required. “Talk to your insurance carrier about your personal policy and what the needs are to cover the event, the boat owner, and your guests,” says Nick and Aleah Valley.

It’s also important to consider the timing when chartering a boat. “Most charter boats have a very specific timeframe for when they can depart a port or marina, whether it's based on tides, locks, or marina rules, so this can dictate your event timeline,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. They suggest building a buffer into your day-of timeline so guests arrive and board the boat at least 45 minutes before your scheduled departure time. This will give guests time to get settled on the boat, and you can welcome them with happy hour drinks and snacks to kick off the celebration.

Tips for Cruise Weddings

Planning a ceremony or a wedding reception on a cruise ship means you’re on a much bigger boat. Typically, that also means there may be other guests onboard that aren’t part of your wedding. If privacy is important to you, be sure to ask the cruise ship’s planning team what your ceremony or reception space will look like, and what your options are for keeping it private.

Depending on the cruise, you may not be able to get married on open water at all. Legally, you may be required to choose to either celebrate your nuptials before the ship departs, or you can choose to say “I do” at the port of one of the cruise’s destinations. Working with the right planner will ensure you’re following the proper legal guidance for a cruise wedding or cruise wedding reception.

“Keep in mind the guest experience and the logistics of what can take place on a cruise,” suggests Nick and Aleah Valley. It’s important to check if you can have events at your leisure, or if you will have to stick to the cruise ship’s strict timeline and events.

How to Keep Guests Comfortable on the Water

While a boat wedding may be dreamy for you and your partner, especially if you’re used to being on the water, it may be tricky for some of your guests.

“ Seasickness can happen quickly, especially when guests are drinking,” says Nick and Aleah Valley. “Have a solid plan, and if you have an opportunity, pass out seasickness patches to your guests the day before your event so they can be prepared for being on the boat.”

Consider putting together welcome bags that might include bug spray, water bottles, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Another helpful option? Put out a big basket of hats and fans, along with a well-stocked station of snacks and water. It’s important that guests stay hydrated to avoid heat exhaustion.

Questions to Ask Before Booking a Boat for Your Wedding

  • Will there be enough space for our guest list?
  • Is there air conditioning on board?
  • Is there a maintenance crew that can assist with potential mechanical issues?
  • What is the galley kitchen’s capacity for creating a meal?
  • Is there a refrigerated place to store our cake? Will it fit?
  • Can we incorporate our own décor?
  • How many life preservers are on board?
  • Is there a specific timeline we need to follow?
  • What insurance is required for use?

After ironing these questions out, you'll be ready to sail off into the sunset as a married couple!

The Complete Breakdown of Yacht Rental Costs for Your Wedding

Getting married on a luxurious, multi-level yacht as it cruises along the sparkling open waters is certainly a dream come true. But before you set sail into a yacht wedding, it’s key to understand the complex costs associated with renting the perfect boat to host your big day.

A beautiful yacht wedding venue - Explore the cost in our guide

Factors That Determine Yacht Rental Rates

Several key factors play into the base price you’ll pay to rent a yacht for your wedding:

  • Yacht size  – Larger boats that can accommodate more guests typically cost more. Small yachts for 50 guests may rent for $2,000 – $5,000 while large, multi-level yachts for 150+ can cost $10,000 – $30,000+.
  • Guest capacity  – Even if you don’t max out the guest list, the boat’s total capacity – not your guest count – determines the rental rate.
  • Amenities  – More features like multiple decks, staterooms, luxury interiors, and upgraded AV equipment can increase rental fees.
  • Reputation  – Well-known luxury yacht companies can demand higher prices than smaller, more modest vendors.
  • Location  – Rental costs are often higher in popular, high-demand locations like Miami and the Mediterranean.

How Season Impacts Yacht Rental Pricing

Due to supply and demand, the time of year you plan your yacht wedding greatly affects potential rental fees. Here’s how seasonality impacts costs:

  • Peak Season  – Late spring to early fall when the weather is ideal. Expect peak pricing.
  • Off-Season  – Early spring and late fall have more budget-friendly pricing. Limited vendor availability.
  • Winter  – Aside from tropical destinations, winter yacht rentals see the lowest pricing. Weather risks.

Ideal Cost-Saving Seasons: Early Fall, Late Spring

Estimated Price Ranges for Yacht Rentals

To help set cost expectations, here are typical yacht rental rates for weddings:

These figures provide a baseline, but the final costs depend on your exact parameters, location, and the amenities needed for your vision.

Additional Yacht Rental Fees to Budget For

Beyond the base rental rate, hosts should budget for these additional yacht-related costs:

  • Fuel Costs  – For cruising yachts, fuel is billed separately at $50 – $500+ per hour underway.
  • Docking Fees  – If using a marina, daily mooring and usage fees apply. Often $500 – $1000+.
  • Crew Fees  – Crew costs like tips, meals, and transport are typically 15% – 20% of the base rental rate.
  • Taxes & Surcharges  – Expect to pay sales tax, port charges, and other fees that can add 10% or more to costs.

Key Takeaway: Carefully account for all the factors that drive yacht rental costs before setting your wedding budget. While the base fee is substantial, all the extras can ultimately impact your bottom line.

When requesting quotes for yacht rentals, be sure to ask providers how much their boat costs specifically for hosting a wedding. This allows you to compare apples-to-apples pricing and get accurate estimates for how much a yacht wedding will cost.

For smaller guest counts under 50 people, more intimate train station weddings can also be an option to consider instead of a pricier yacht venue.

Food and Drink Costs for a Yacht Wedding: Catering, Alcohol, and More

After securing the perfect luxury yacht venue, one of the biggest expenses for your wedding will be the food and beverages. From cocktail-hour bites to plated dinners, you’ll need to budget accordingly for all refreshments onboard.

Catering Costs Per Person

Most yacht venues require you to use their preferred caterers or select from an approved list. Here are typical per-person costs:

  • Cocktail Reception  – $15 – $25 per guest
  • Plated Dinner  – $100 – $250 per guest
  • Family-Style Dinner  – $80 – $150 per guest
  • Buffet Dinner  – $60 – $100 per guest
  • Food Stations  – $100 – $200 per guest

Costs vary based on menu complexity, cuisine types, ingredients, culinary staffing needs, and service style.

Food and Drink Costs for a Yacht Wedding

Common Yacht Wedding Menu Options

Popular cuisine options include:

  • Seafood – crab cakes, shrimp, lobster, ceviche, salmon
  • Pasta – penne, ravioli, tortellini, gnocchi
  • Poultry – chicken, duck, quail
  • Beef – filet mignon, sirloin, wagyu
  • Pork – stuffed chops, glazed ham
  • Vegetarian – grilled veggies, ravioli, eggplant

Catering costs per person are similar to other premiere venues like island destinations or castles , but yacht menus tend to emphasize fresher seafood.

Bar Service Costs and Considerations

Alcohol represents a significant portion of your food and beverage expenses. Here are factors that impact costs:

  • Open Bar vs Cash Bar  – Open bars are pricier but more guest-friendly. Cash bars pass costs to guests.
  • Premium Alcohol Upcharges  – Top-shelf liquor can add $10 – $25 per person versus well options.
  • Beer and Wine Only  – Limiting to beer and wine instead of full cocktails can save 30%.
  • Drink Minimums  – Some yachts charge per-person minimums, like $15/person for the first hour.
  • Bartender Fees  – Often $150 – $250 per bartender for a 5 hour event.

Other Food and Drink Expenses

Remember to budget for:

  • Wedding cake – $500+
  • Dessert buffet – $8-$15 per person
  • Champagne toast – $4-$8 per-glass
  • Late-night snacks – $7-$10 per person

Bottom Line: Plan for $200+ per guest for food and drinks on a luxury yacht to cover everything from appetizers to that last drink.

Draping – Ceiling, wall, aisle, and chair fabrics. $1,000-$5,000

Table Decor – Linens, chargers, overlays, runners, candles. $20-$50 per table

When Renting, Remember:

  • Delivery, setup and pickup fees often apply.
  • If moving locations, all items must be secured.
  • Rentals take up deck space – measure carefully!
  • Simpler is better – let the yacht shine.

Budget 15-20% of your total wedding costs for elevating your yacht with rentals and decor. Lighting and florals make the biggest impact!

Capturing the Big Day: Entertainment and Photography Costs for a Yacht Wedding

You found the perfect luxury yacht venue. The decor and florals are set. Now it’s time to capture the memories by booking entertainment and photography. Here’s what to expect price-wise:

Music and Dancing Cost Considerations

DJ – $1,500-$3,500 The most budget-friendly option for providing an evening of music and emcee duties.

Live Band – $3,500-$15,000 A 3-6 piece band brings an elevated experience but significantly higher costs.

Strings – $3,000-$6,000 A quartet or trio provides ceremony and cocktail hour elegance.

Soloist – $1,500-$3,000 Harpist, guitarist,t or vocalist for ceremony or first dance.

When budgeting, consider travel fees, timing, power needs, staging, and equipment involved.

Photography Costs for a Yacht Wedding

Capturing the Ceremony and Reception

Photographer – $3,000-$10,000 Photography is one of the biggest wedding investments. Price reflects experience, time commitment, and rights to images.

Videographer – $2,500-$7,500 Cinematic highlight films have risen in popularity. Multi-camera footage costs more.

Photo Booth – $800-$1,500 Provide fun guest memories in an onboard photo booth.

Don’t forget to budget for catering, transport, and accommodations if your wedding pros travel.

Extra Entertainment Atmosphere

Live Painter – $500-$1,500 Artist captures the essence of your day on canvas.

Caricaturist – $400-$800 Sketches quirky drawings of guests.

Fireworks – $5,000+ Light up the night sky with a fireworks display (permit dependent).

Acrobats/Dancers – $3,000+ Provide “wow” entertainment during cocktail hour or reception.

Takeaway: Budget approximately 10% of your total wedding costs on entertaining and documenting your luxury yacht nuptials via music, photography, and more.

Keeping Guests Informed: Wedding Stationery & Paper Costs for Yacht Weddings

From save-the-dates to invitations, programs, and signage, stationery and paper goods are key components of your luxury yacht wedding. Here’s what to budget:

Save-the-Dates and Wedding Invitations

Give guests advance notice and set the tone with:

  • Save-the-Date Cards  – $150 to $300 for 50 guests.
  • Invitations and RSVP Cards  – $400 to $1,000+ for 50 guests.

Factors like premium papers, multiple enclosures, complex designs, and custom calligraphy drive up costs.

Wedding Invitations

Additional Printed Items Costs

For a 50-person wedding, budget $1,000+ for all paper elements.

Working With Your Stationer

  • Order save-the-dates 8-10 months in advance and invitations 6 months out.
  • Provide stationer with yacht venue photos/logo for inspiration.
  • Consider digitally RSVPing via wedding website to save money.
  • Simplify designs to essential text; less is more.
  • Proof carefully! Names must be spelled correctly.

Keep guests informed in style by allocating 5-10% of your total wedding budget to stationery.

If you want to lower the costs of a yacht wedding, one strategy is reducing the guest count. Because yacht pricing is often based on capacity, reducing attendees can directly impact how much your yacht wedding will cost overall.

Don’t Go Overboard! Budgeting for Yacht Wedding Planning and Coordination

A yacht wedding involves intricately coordinating vendors, rentals, decor, and more across land and sea. Professional planning helps ensure smooth sailing. Here’s what to budget for assistance.

Wedding Planner Costs

Full-service planners typically charge 10-15% of your total wedding costs. For a $100,000 wedding, you’ll pay $10,000 – $15,000 for an experienced planner familiar with yacht venues.

Partial planning ranges from $2,000-$6,000 for help with vendor research, selection, and management.

Hourly rates of $100-$250 apply for limited consultation.

Wedding Planner Costs

Day-of Wedding Coordination

If you handle upfront planning but want assistance executing your vision on the big day, day-of coordinators range from $1,500-$3,000.

Coordinators manage vendor setup, keep events on time, assist guests, and handle any on-site hiccups.

Assistant coordinators are often $50-$75 per hour.

Factors That Increase Planning Costs

  • Large guest list
  • Multiple events – welcome dinner, day-after brunch
  • Sailing itinerary with frequent location changes
  • Highly complex design or vision
  • Extensive rentals and décor

Ways to Reduce Planning Costs

  • Seek new coordinators building their portfolio.
  • Handle planning yourself and use limited hourly help.
  • Ask the caterer if they include coordination services.
  • See if yacht staff can assist with oversight.

While wedding planners represent another expense, they are instrumental in executing a smooth, flawless event and preventing costly mistakes, especially for yacht weddings involving extensive logistics. Budget accordingly.

The other staff and Dj Pharaoh were also incredible. We have heard from family and friends that it was one of the best weddings they have ever been to! We cannot thank them enough for making it so special for us.

Marczak Wedding, June 2023

We wanted a unique all in one ceremony and reception, we were exploring downtown when we came across yacht starship we looked at each other and thought “how cool would it be to get married on the water”. From the moment we contacted the boat for a meeting it was a amazing experience. We first met with Chris D to talk about the details, guest count, date and our vision once that was in place and contract was signed 3 month out we were contacted by Joey O (our day of coordinator). We scheduled an in person meeting to walk through the yacht and decide seating arrangements and table placements and talk time line. Every time I reached out with a question or concern I had an answer right away. Honestly this takes the stress out of wedding planning they were so helpful with everything. We were able to do a rehearsal the day before on our boat as well as bring on any décor that we would need to have set up & Joey made sure it was done and reflected our vision. Our wedding was Friday, June 16th and was flawless. We are still getting compliments on the amazing food and service by the waitstaff. A huge THANK YOU to Chris D and Joey O for helping us plan & pull off a flawless wedding. Mr. & Mrs. Marczak

Sleigher Wedding, May 2023

If you want a wedding venue, this is it! Our wedding couldn’t have been more perfect. Everyone on staff was incredible, the food is so good and everything was super efficient.

Kate, April 2023

This couldn’t have been better for our rehearsal dinner! The cruise was perfect for our out of state guests. They got to experience being out on the water, and getting to see Tampa. The staff was so wonderful, and Wendy was so prompt and helpful with all of our emails. Couldn’t recommend Yacht Starship enough!

Amanda, May 2023

We would definitely recommend The Yacht Starship for your wedding. The wedding coordinator Joey was absolutely fantastic! He made sure everyone was taken care of! Starship truly did everything for us and planning was a breeze. A lot of things we didn’t have to worry about and the things they weren’t able to provide like a photographer they had an amazing list of recommendations. We truly want to thank starship and we will definitely be back on their dinner cruises.

Sidney, March 2023

Yacht Starship IV was an absolute DREAM wedding! From the coordinator (Amelia – amazing), staff, food, timing, location… It was exactly what I had pictured for our wedding! The DJ, captain, coordinator, and staff were so accommodating to everything I asked and made sure we were taken care of. We got married in March with perfect weather. Ceremony, first dances, and all our reception dancing took place on the top deck – so fun!

Judy, March 2023

I can’t say enough amazing things about the Yacht Starship! Our gorgeous Yacht was Starship II. We worked with Wendy Odom & Eric Abril both were so accommodating, answered every question and concern with the utmost professionalism! Always helpful !! The wedding went smooth as silk, we were guided every step of the way. Talk about attentive, the entire staff was exceptional! Anything we needed wanted or desired was foreseen by a staff member and delivered before we even asked! We had a sit down dinner for the reception. We chose steak, chicken or salmon everyone said their food was delicious! The DJ was great. Highly recommend this venue!

Plan Your Perfect Wedding on a Boat

Getting married on land isn’t the only way to get hitched.

When we plan weddings, we are looking for absolute perfection. We are careful in choosing the destination, the venue, and the seating chart. Gardens and patios decorated with beautiful flower arrangements look amazing but if you want something more unique, you should have your wedding on a boat. Because as it turns out, getting married on the water is awesome! The overall impression of a wedding on a yacht charter is remarkable and at Boatsetter , we know you will cherish the memories forever. If you can have it all, why not set the date and have the most important event in your life on a yacht or a sailboat? So bring the reverend and don’t forget the rings, cause it’s time to get hitched!

The Adventurous Wedding Destination

Getting married on a boat can be far from regular and that’s the surprise element that everyone wants to achieve. People are used to regular weddings in great halls or gardens, but planning a wedding on a boat can bring excitement and adventure. Your guests will enjoy the breeze, beautiful sunset in the evening, and the magical moments under the starlight. You can even choose to say, “yes” at sunset on the deck, while orange sunlight covers you and your partner.

The Wedding Ceremony and the Reception On the Boat

Some people choose to perform only a wedding reception on the boat. Apart from being very sophisticated, it can also be well received by the guests. They would all have to come at the marked time since the boat is set to raise sails. After the wedding ceremony family and friends are welcomed to enjoy the music since both the band and the DJ are allowed on a boat as your guests. Amongst the music, you can have an exquisite dinner, and enjoy the view over the subtle waves.

Boats You can Rent for Your Wedding Reception

If you are worried that you won’t have enough space on your boat for your wedding, you don’t have to be when you hop aboard a Boatsetter boat . There are various types of wedding boat rentals, and you can choose between a yacht, a sailboat for an intimate wedding, or a catamaran which is a great option for larger receptions. If you prefer an intimate wedding or having just a couple of people onboard, you can choose either a small yacht or a sailboat. It will fulfill the scenario you wanted and you will keep the intimacy alive. Should you decide on a slightly bigger wedding, then a catamaran is spacious enough to host even large wedding parties. We guarantee that the impressions are strong, whatever your choice is.

The Perfect Wedding Photos on a Boat

Even if we don’t want to admit, we all want the perfect wedding photos. After all, you probably plan to show these to your kids and even grandchildren someday. Those will be lifelong memories, so imagine all the beautiful pictures you can take from a rented wedding boat. You will find the blue sky, warm sunlight, and the sunshine on the faces of happy guests during the day in your pictures. After all, when you get married on a boat, the atmosphere is genuinely incredible and it is definitely an option you have to consider when planning your wedding. So hop aboard, and get hitched on your Boatsetter boat rental !

Rent a yacht for your wedding, rent a yacht for your special day.

As an alternative wedding venue, renting a yacht is an idea that’s growing in popularity, especially in the Miami area where the weather usually cooperates with the happy couple’s plans and the scenery is magnificent.

The one thing many couples do wonder is just how much does it cost to rent a yacht for a wedding, and how do those costs compare to more conventional options like renting a banquet hall or a back room at a restaurant.

There is, of course, no one easy answer. Most yacht rental companies offer a wide variety of yachts, ranging from the smaller, sportier craft to the kinds of luxury yachts that you see the rich and famous celebrating on.

However, that being said, you can determine some of the basic potential costs.

How much does it cost to rent a yacht for a wedding?

Most yachts can be rented by the hour, and those prices range from a little over $150 per hour for a fun, sporty 40′ cruiser that can accommodate up to 12 guests –   perfect for a smaller, intimate wedding. Up to over $1,000 for the crewed and captained exclusive use of a luxury yacht offering amenities and extras that rival – or exceed – those of a high end 5-star luxury hotel.

How many guests are likely to be attending?

Where would you like to go?

What kind of food and beverage options do you need?

Rent a yacht for your wedding

For some couples the glamor of a wedding right on the water in the heart of downtown Miami is a dream come true. For others, sailing out to a gorgeous, out of the way island to exchange vows sounds like the wedding of their dreams.

A yacht rental for a wedding offers so many amazing opportunities. And the best part? Choosing a yacht rental company like BOAT.ME means you also have a full staff of experts at your disposal to help you plan the perfect day and ensure that your cream yacht wedding goes off without a hitch.

Boat/Event Concerns?

If you have never attended an event on one of your yachts then you might have some boat related questions regarding your wedding day. Schedule Your Special Day

Q: Will I Get Sea Sick?

At Electra Cruises all of our events are held within the Harbor where the water is calm, there are no ocean waves in sight, and the yachts sail very slowly. Plus the yachts are simply too large to be affected by a wave!

Q: Are the Boats Child Friendly?

If the bride and groom have invited your kids we welcome them too! For the most part the yachts are fully enclosed and there are tall safety rails along the parameters of the outside decks. All 5 yachts are also equipped with child life vests as well.

Q: Is Their Enough Time?

Majority of our events are held in 4 hours. Unless you anticipate having a long ceremony it tends to be more than enough time. In that case we can always add more time! Just ask a representative!

Q: Is the Food Good?

Each of our yachts has a full galley head chef and kitchen staff who work diligently the day of your event to prepare your customized menu. Everything is prepared from scratch on the yacht itself according to your event so nothing is catered or will sit out for long periods of time.

Q: Is the Boat Spacious Enough?

Depending on the size of your party we can host a small intimate wedding for 20 or have all of your friends and relatives for a wedding of 300. The beauty of having a yacht wedding is having a designated deck for all of your festivities so you never feel crammed.

Q: Is the Boat Handicap Friendly?

While we have guests in wheelchairs almost weekly our largest yacht the Eternity has an elevator that reaches all 3 decks so no one has to miss a beat!

Q: What if Someone Needs to Leave the Boat?

Guests with young children or elderly tend to be concerned about not being able to leave if needed. Not only are there water taxis and gondolas who can take private parties back to the dock, there are medical water ambulances that can arrive at the yacht within seconds if there is an emergency.

Q: What if there is Wind or Rain?

Because our yachts are almost entirely enclosed the nature of your party will not be affected rain or shine. In fact photographers prefer overcast weather for your photos!

Q: What if there is Mechanical Breakdown?

Our service staff is also made up of knowledgeable experienced deckhands who are constantly doing engine room checks to prevent problems and ensure the yacht is running properly.

Elegant Black and White Clearwater Wedding | The Yacht Starship

We knew that our friends and family would have to travel to our wedding. Being spread out all over Canada meant that either Jon and I would be traveling or all our guests would. Jon was firm on making sure that our wedding would give everyone the opportunity to go on a fantastic vacation.

We had contacted many venues for our wedding, looking for something that catered to an intimate 50-guest, destination wedding. We wanted a venue that could host our ceremony, dinner, and reception. We needed something at one place because with all of our guests traveling to us, we had limited access to transportation. There were a lot of Uber rides and car rentals during our wedding weekend, so having a venue that provided our whole wedding in one place was really important. Yacht Starship provided a unique experience. The scenic venue and hospitality of the employees were amazing.

The most important elements of our wedding were the venue and the atmosphere. We wanted a venue that was unique and accessible, something that would create a lifelong memory for our friends and family who traveled from another country. We also wanted a light-hearted and fun atmosphere, and so we thought an open bar accompanied that well. We chose Yacht Starship because we thought it would be a unique and extravagant experience for our guests. Also, we needed something all in one place because with all of our guests traveling to us, we had limited access to transportation, so having a venue that provided our whole wedding in one place was really important. Yacht StarShip provided a unique experience, and the scenic venue and hospitality of the employees were amazing. The employees made it clear to us that they would ensure a personalized event and that we would have the day of our dreams. Being from Canada, we had a lot of questions, and there was no shortage of emails from me during the planning, but the Yacht StarShip always had a timely and helpful response. We loved working with them and would highly recommend them to any couple attempting to host a destination wedding!

We looked for something that was all-inclusive since we were re-planning the wedding so quickly. The Yacht StarShip offered a venue, amazing picture spots, catering, a coordinator, and a DJ which was everything we were looking for!

We hired Yacht StarShip because they were all-inclusive and checked all of our boxes when planning. They were absolutely amazing and so accommodating throughout the whole process. Chris was our coordinator, and she was so patient with my last-minute changes. She worked with our timeline and made sure we had a beautiful event!

We looked for a location that was “all-inclusive,” affordable, and that would offer an enjoyable evening for everyone on our guest list. We also looked for a venue that fit our story and our unique personalities.

After speaking to many venues all over the state, we were amazed at everything Yacht StarShip offered for their very affordable packages. We were thrilled that we could get married on a boat, and the staff impressed us not only on our exploratory visit but also during our complimentary dinner cruise to experience the yacht before booking.

Everyone we encountered was extremely easy to work with, helpful in every way, and had the best personalities. Chris, our wedding coordinator, walked us through every step and reminded us of everything that we may have forgotten along the way. The Captain ensured that we stayed in smooth waters and our DJ spent the entire night feeling the crowd out and keeping everyone dancing. The entire staff also accommodated our last-minute changes due to guest cancellations, timeline changes, and some last-minute dinner revisions. Overall, their service from start to finish was phenomenal; we couldn't have asked for better.

The most memorable moment for us was walking down the aisle after the famous ‘I do.' Being surrounded by our family and friends, experiencing the salty air and perfect breeze was the best moment of the whole day as it felt like we could take on the world!

Tropical Pineapple Inspired Waterfront Tampa Wedding | Yacht StarShip

I wanted something that was a complete 180 from our original venue.  I knew if we were going to move our wedding to Florida, I wanted it to be on the Yacht Starship (actually my dad’s suggestion). We both thought a wedding on a boat was really special and unique. We also liked that we were able to space ourselves out and that it was open air.

The Yacht Starship was amazing from beginning to end. They handled everything and really made planning a wedding from across the country, in the middle of a pandemic, possible. We cannot say enough good things about Chris Dorroh (our planner), the officiant, the food, the DJ, and the whole experience.

We looked for convenience, all-inclusive prices, and easy setup and tear-down service.

We chose the Yacht StarShip because most services were all included including food and drinks, ceremony chairs and sound system, cake cutting, DJ, setup, and tear-down. We were able to provide all the decorations, and they set them all up prior to the wedding. Our family and friends did not have to lift a finger!

We envisioned a venue in the heart of Tampa with a water aspect.

The Yacht StarShip is like family to us! I worked there throughout college and Taylor is a captain on the yachts. We thought it would be a great way to give our guests the best experience.

The Yacht StarShip includes an event planner, catering, bar services, and even DJ entertainment which was amazin g!

With over 30,000 hotel rooms to offer, Charlotte is a good location for a hotel wedding with a larger guest count.

Wedding Venue Prices in North Carolina

The weather will dictate off-peak season for wedding venues in North Carolina. If you’re planning a beach wedding, the warmer summer months will obviously be in high demand and venues will be less likely to negotiate or decrease in pricing. Typically the cold winter months of January, February and March will be off-peak and the best months get a great price, given you will hold your event indoors. If you have your heart set on an outdoor wedding, try to avoid the May/June, September/October months as these will be most in demand and prices will be their highest.

With so many different types of venues, cost per person can range widely. For a traditional banquet location prices per plate can range from $75 - $175 per plate. Many venues cater food in, which is typically a lower cost, where prices can range $30 - $75pp. In these instances don’t forget you need to add on any rental equipment, chairs, tables, tablecloths, etc. Hotels will always be on the more expensive end for receptions, along with higher service charges. Service charges can range anywhere from 18% to 22%. Sales tax in North Carolina is 6.75% and you do not pay sales tax on the service charge.

Information and Resources for Weddings in North Carolina

Before getting married in North Carolina you will have to obtain a North Carolina marriage license. To do so, you can usually go to any clerk’s office in the county you plan to have your wedding. There is no waiting period after receiving your marriage license, so you can get married right away if you so please. Your license will expire 60 days after the issue date on your marriage license.

The fee for a marriage license fee is $60. You do not have to be a current resident and the license is valid throughout the state. Blood tests and physical exams are not required. You must be 18 or older to get married without parental consent. All applicants must present a Social Security Card or legal document with their full Social Security number on it.

If you or your partner have been previously married and are now divorced or widowed, the date of divorce or death will be needed. And if the divorce or death of the spouse took place within the past 60 days, it is necessary for you to bring the death certificate or divorce decree. You can order a copy of the death certificate or divorce decree online.

It’s no secret that weddings can be expensive — and the larger the wedding, the higher the price tag. But the big day itself isn’t the only cost to consider; engagement rings, wedding bands and honeymoons can also add up to a sizable sum. Total costs can also vary based on other factors, including the vendors you work with, location and more.

We surveyed 2,000 Americans who got married between 2021 to 2024 to gain insight into average costs. If you’re planning a wedding now or in the near future, here’s what to expect.

Key findings:

  • On average, 52% of Americans spend less than $10,000 on their wedding.
  • Nearly half (44%) invite 50 guests or less to their special day.
  • On average, 69% of Americans spend $5,000 or less on their engagement ring.
  • The majority of Americans (47%) spend less than $1,000 on their wedding ring.
  • Half of American couples spend less than $10,000 on their honeymoon while 28% don’t take a honeymoon at all.

Average wedding cost in America

The majority of respondents (52%) said their big day cost less than $10,000. Just 20% of those surveyed spent more than $30,000 on their wedding. Only a relatively small percentage had sticker shock about costs, with 12% expressing regrets about how much they spent. On the whole, though, 86% were comfortable with their total wedding costs.

Average wedding size

Our data suggested that couples favored smaller weddings over larger ones, perhaps due to some lingering concerns after the pandemic. From 2021 to 2024, 44% percent of couples opted for intimate gatherings of fewer than 50 people.

Out of the couples who had a larger number of guests, 23% hosted 51 to 100 while only 19% had more than 100 people at their weddings.

Average engagement ring cost

Engagement ring costs vary widely depending on the style and gemstone of choice as well as the size and quality of the gemstone.

For insight into costs, we asked survey respondents how much they spent on their engagement rings. Based on their responses, 69% spent $5,000 or less on their ring. Fifteen percent spent $5,001 to $10,000, and only 4% paid more than $10,000. Some cost-conscious respondents (8%) opted not to purchase a ring at all.

Average wedding ring cost

Our survey indicated that wedding bands cost less on average than engagement rings. The majority of respondents (47%) spent less than $1,000; 20% spent $1,001 to $2,500; and 14% spent $2,501 to $5,000.

Only 11% of respondents spent more than $5,000, and 6% said they didn’t purchase a wedding ring at all.

Average honeymoon cost

Honeymoons also represent a sizable line item in the wedding budget. They often amount to several thousand dollars, depending on your destination, timeframe and other factors.

Per our survey, half of American couples spent less than $10,000 on this post-wedding vacation while 28% didn’t take a honeymoon at all. Ten percent of respondents said they spent $10,001 to $20,000, and only 9% spent more than $20,000.

How do Americans pay for their weddings?

Paying for a wedding can be challenging — but if your big day is coming up soon, you’ve got some options. Most Americans (79%) chose to cover their costs in cash, while 33% used credit cards. Only 2% reported financing their special day with a personal loan .

Of those surveyed, 52% said their wedding was self-funded, while 44% received cash gifts from family or friends to partially or fully offset the costs.

Should you consider a loan to pay for your wedding?

While most of our survey respondents paid for their weddings with cash or credit cards, a few opted to take out a wedding loan . Here are some of the pros and cons of going this route if you’re considering financing your big day.

Other ways to cover wedding costs

While personal loans can work for some couples, they aren’t always the right choice to pay for your wedding. If a personal loan doesn’t fit your needs, here are some alternatives to consider to help fund your special day:

  • Savings: Using your savings to pay for your wedding is a popular choice. Many couples start putting money aside before or after they get engaged.
  • Investments: If you have a taxable brokerage account , you might consider selling some investments to fund your big day. Note that while it might be tempting to borrow from your 401(k) or other retirement savings, this generally isn’t a good idea. This is because you could derail potential investment gains and jeopardize your future nest egg.
  • Credit cards: Some credit cards offer a 0% introductory annual percentage rate (APR) for a set period — often six months to a year, depending on the card. Applying for a card like this could help you avoid interest charges if you repay your balances within the introductory period. However, keep in mind that if you can’t pay off the card in time, you could end up paying a large amount of interest.
  • Cash gifts: Alternatively, you could ask close family or friends for help. Many parents, for example, are willing to pitch in to cover wedding costs. Ensure you outline your preferences, set a budget and understand how much you can put toward your day before starting the conversation.
  • Wedding registry: While wedding registries have traditionally been reserved for bridal gifts, some registries let family and friends make cash contributions that couples can use to offset their wedding or honeymoon costs. Popular choices include Zola, The Knot and Honeyfund. Just ensure you research potential fees before signing up for a registry that supports cash gifts.

How to save money on wedding costs

Most of our survey participants spent less than $10,000 on their weddings. If you’re looking to keep costs in the four-figure range or below, there are several things you can do to accomplish this goal.

  • Create a budget. Before you start planning, set a wedding budget . Research potential costs for the venue, food, flowers, DJ, photographer and other essentials — and then stick to that budget as closely as possible.
  • Set money aside. Every little bit helps when it comes to paying for a wedding. Look at your overall household budget and see how much you can comfortably set aside. Also, consider making regular contributions to a high-yield savings account to earn more interest.
  • Prioritize your costs. Consider your priorities as you allocate funds. Does your menu matter more than your centerpieces? If so, consider allocating more of your budget for food.
  • Opt for a weekday wedding. Saturdays tend to be the most expensive days to get married. If it works for your schedule, consider opting for a weekday wedding to save.
  • Keep your guest list small. Trimming your guest list can be tough, but opting for a small wedding could save you a sizable sum.
  • Choose a non-traditional venue. Many traditional wedding venues charge a premium for space and food. Consider opting for a non-traditional venue, such as a small local museum, park or even a backyard to save money.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The biggest wedding expenses are often the venue, food and drinks, though costs vary depending on your preferences. For instance, those who opt for a wedding in a hotel ballroom will likely pay more than those who host their ceremony and reception in a family member’s backyard.

Couples typically pay for a wedding with cash, credit cards or gifts from family and friends. A smaller percentage choose to take out a personal loan to finance their big day. Weigh the pros and cons of each option when choosing how to pay for your wedding.

Lingering inflation is impacting the cost of everything, from groceries to wedding vendors. Per a recent study from the wedding website Zola, wedding costs increased by nearly 14% from 2023 to 2024.
