Land Yachting on the Beach at St Andrews

land yachting in scotland

On your marks… Get set and sail! Head to St. Andrews for a two-hour land yachting session. If you’ve never experienced sailing on wheels, then get ready for tons of fun as you whiz up and down the beach only a few inches from the ground. This exhilarating experience is undoubtedly something you don’t want to miss out on while you’re in St. Andrews. The key thing to master is how to stop as there are no brakes. Slow down by turning into the wind or easing the sail.

Where can I go land yachting in Scotland?

‘Blown Away’ offers a range of activities, including land yachting, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and surfing. They also cater to larger hen, stag, or corporate parties who are looking for something different to add to their bucket list. The two-hour session costs £55 per person or £45 for those under 16.

Land Yachting Guide

  • Sailing a land yacht is easier than sailing a boat. There are no waves or risk of capsizing or falling overboard.
  • Remember the sail is your accelerator. If your need to stop or gain control let go of your mainsail.
  • Land yachting is considered a safe sport in comparison to other action sports. Always wear a helmet.

St. Andrews, home to Scotland’s first university founded in 1413, is a great place for a day out and exploring. St. Andrews is most famously known as the “Home of Golf” and even if you don’t play you can watch golfers tee off on the Old Course. With lots of cafes and pubs to meet up in after a fun day at the beach, this is a great place to try this thrilling sport! West Sands Beach was the film location for the opening scene of Hugh Hudson’s, Academy Award-winning film, ‘Chariots of Fire’.

  • Master the basic skills in as little as 15-20 minutes
  • Receive a full demonstration of how to sail and then get out there to practice
  • Pre-booking is required and bookings are subject to change depending on the weather
  • Helmets are provided but please bring gloves and protective goggles
  • Please contact ‘Blown Away’ for special group rates and availability

Guide to Scotland

Breathtaking, distinctive and truly exhilarating

Offering dramatic scenery, gorgeous anchorages and a remarkable history, Scotland is home to some of the most unique and beautiful yachting grounds in the world. Enjoy cruising amid the wild, romantic beauty of the Western isles and immerse yourself in some of the most unspoilt scenery that the United Kingdom  has to offer.

The perfect place to adventure and relax, there is a mythical quality enriched by Scotland’s striking west coast, beautiful cities, lochs and castles. Scotland’s charm is also in its picturesque rolling landscape and centuries of history, guests have the opportunity to take a scenic walk through the fascinating hills or feast their eyes on the incredible vistas from their very own superyacht rental. In the Hebrides you will find towering highland mountain scenes as well as pristine villages around protected harbors which is perfect for any charter vacation.

Famously an incredibly tranquil place to sail, Scotland is also fantastic for adventure and wildlife enthusiasts. Along the dramatic coastline, the area is teeming with wildlife in the water from porpoises, seals, dolphins and, if you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of orca and minke whales. On land, you will find wild stags roaming through the wilderness as well as an abundance of wild birds from the Scottish crossbill and puffins to sea eagles circling overhead.

A popular yacht charter base is the beautiful and unique Oban, the gateway town of the Hebrides. From here, guests can head around the northern tip of Mull where you can explore the entirely volcanic island of Stiffa which has been completely uninhabited since the 17th century. From sea caves to century old Abbeys, the north of Scotland has plenty of interesting sites to keep all guests on a luxury yacht charter  entertained.

Sailing South you will find the isle of Jura where guests can enjoy more untouched scenery and glacial beaches, most of which are inaccessible except by boat. Popular activities here include heli-fishing on the numerous hill lochs, salmon fishing and deer-stalking which can all be completed just a stone’s throw from your yacht.

Scotland also boasts incredible golf courses and whisky tours for any connoisseurs who would like to experience how it all began. Three of the world’s iconic whisky names are found on the Scottish isle of Islay: Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroig and guests can enjoy private tours and tastings at all three. Another popular activity visitors can embark on during their vacation is to play golf at the renowned Machrie. As one of Scotland’s most highly acclaimed courses offering 18-hole championship links for golfers of all abilities and ages to enjoy.

Filled with mesmerizing scenery, outstanding and unique activities and picture-perfect vistas, a superyacht charter around Scotland does not disappoint. Sailing the west coast of Scotland: full cruising itinerary

Miranda Delmar-Morgan

  • Miranda Delmar-Morgan
  • August 5, 2022

If you only have a limited cruising time, then the west coast of Scotland is still within reach. We plan the best routes and places for you to visit

There are so many attractive islands and stunning sea lochs that it is impossible to list them all while sailing the west coast of Scotland .

Sailors in these waters have to be prepared for lively weather , be more self sufficient and have good ground tackle.

The hills and mountains provide a spectacular backdrop and when the weather is nice it is a stunning place to be.

There are particularly special anchorages like Tinker’s Hole on the south side of Mull, and Puilladobhrain.

It is possible to anchor off Staffa and run ashore for an hour or two to visit Fingal’s Cave.

You can also anchor off Iona to visit the world famous abbey. Those keeping their yachts in the Ayrshire or Clyde marinas often use the Crinan Canal and then go up the Sound of Luing for a circuit around Mull.

A useful starting point for a two or three week cruise would be from Oban which now has a shoreside marina , as well as one at Kerrara where people often leave their boats on moorings if they have to go home.

Yachts can also be left fairly safely at Arisaig where you can catch a train for Fort William.

Boats moored in the anchorage at Tobermory on Mull

Tobermory is charming and provides a well-sheltered anchorage. Credit: Alamy Stock Photo

Oban has good shopping and connections. Dunstaffnage also has pontoons but has quite a big fetch in the N to NE quarter.

Tobermory in the Sound of Mull is very attractive, with some pontoons. Loch Aline, Loch Spelve and Loch Sunart all have useful anchorages.

Having rounded Ardnamurchan Point and earned the right to tie heather to your pulpit the islands of Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna (The Small Isles) all have beautiful anchorages with good holding.

A simple circuit around Mull, visiting Coll and Tiree, the Treshnish Islands and Gometra can provide plenty of interest without doing a lot of mileage.

From Canna it is a short hop over to the Outer Hebrides where you can work your way up the chain of the Outer Hebrides as time permits.

If you get that far north the Shiant Isles should not be missed. It is possible to anchor there in settled weather.

There are countless nooks and crannies to escape strong wind s.

Many lochs are deep and you can get into flat water, but some lochs can experience quite violent downdraughts.

Sailing around Britain and Ireland: All you need to know

Sailing around Britain and Ireland and into its nooks and crannies is always an interesting endeavour. You get to know…

Fiercest tide races

The UK’s 11 fiercest tide races

Breaking waves and lurking rocks have earned some British tidal races a fearsome reputation. Dag Pike explains how to navigate…

The Kyle Rhea is where Gavin Maxwell lived and wrote The Ring of Bright Water and is remembered there.

The pontoons have been reinstated at Kyle of Loch Alsh.

To the east in Loch Alsh there is a beautiful anchorage at Totaig looking across to Eilean Donan Castle.

The tides run hard through the Kyle Rhea. Kyleakin also has a pontoon but it is often full and depths are quite shallow.

Mallaig has pontoons and is a nice little place, with a station. Loch Linnhe provides access to Fort William, the Caledonian Canal and the Great Glen.

Skye has several fine lochs. Loch Scavaig is particularly beautiful, with a walk around the inland Loch Coruisk, but this is one of the culprits which gets strong downdraughts.

Provisioning is best done in Oban or Tobermory before going to the outer islands.

Wildlife, like these common seals at Tinkers Hole, is one of the big draws for sailing the west coast of Scotland. Credit: Alamy Stock Photo

Phone signal can be weak or non-existent in some of the more remote lochs. There are whisky distilleries for every aficionado.

Distances are short and allow for a day sailing with sheltered anchorages and lovely walking ashore.

Most of the islands have small community shops. Ardnamurchan Point can be tricky to round in contrary winds.

Wildlife is abundant with whales and dolphins. World-girdlers return and say they had forgotten just how beautiful this part of the world is.

Sailing the west coast of Scotland: Hazards

The Minch can be very dangerous in rough seas. There is a TSS Scheme off the west side of Skye. Off Neist Point TSS.

Strong tides in the Cuan Sound, the Sound of Luing.

The Gulf of Corryvreckan should be avoided except at absolutely slack tide in calm weather.

11 Epic Adventure Activities In Scotland

From shredding awesome ski slopes to white water rafting, these are the 11 best adventure activities in Scotland.

Adventure Activities In Scotland

Rolling hills, monsters in lochs and men in skirts. Sure, Scotland is known for her mesmerising beauty and cheeky banter but Caledonia is more than bus trips to battlefields and the TV show Outlander.

Table of Contents

Paddleboarding In The North Sea

White-water rafting, swinging in scotland, road tripping in a racer, surf’s up in scotland, stay in a castle, zorbing downhill, hit the slopes, hike the mountains, walk the walk, attack ‘the wall’, adventures in scotland.

Here’s our (Gemma and Craig from Two Scots Abroad) guide to the thrilling adventure activities in Scotland.

One of Edinburgh’s most popular day trips is to the town of St Andrews in the Kingdom of Fife. St Andrews is the town responsible for Prince William and Kate Middleton’s union, however; I don’t think the royal pair took part in one of the coolest things to do in Fife, paddle boarding in the North Sea.

The outdoors company, Blown Away, ran by twins, Jamie and Guy, are responsible for getting visitors into the water on boards and kayaks at West Sands.

If water activities are not your bag, the pair also offer land-yachting (also known as land sailing, sand yachting and Blokarting) where you ‘sail’ the sand of St Andrews.

Not adventure based but cannot go ignored; St Andrews is famous for its golf courses. There are ten in total and many more along the East Neuk in Fife. Here you will also find Kingsbarns distillery, whisky and gin lovers.

Paddleboarding Adventure Activities In Scotland

Not quite on par with the rapids at the River Tully near Cairns, many of Scotland’s rivers play host to inflatable dinghies full of daredevils with thick skin (and wetsuits).

Pitlochry’s River Tummel is advertised at a grade 2-5 (we experienced the lower level, unfortunately) and the River Tay at Dundee a grade 1-3.

Head to Perthshire to take the plunge of the UK’s first ever bridge bungee at Killiecrankie (funniest Scottish town name!)

Revellers jump from 132 feet solo or tandem over the River Garry, gloves are recommended for the wait at the top. Action cams are welcomed but customers can purchase photos and shots from the team if not equipped.

Craig and I did this together; I’ve never seen him look so on edge (boom boom!) No seriously, he was terrified but claims he enjoyed it.

Scotland’s hottest new road trip is just over 500 miles around the Highlands, taking in tranquil turquoise beaches, the loveliest of fishing villages, castles and distilleries.

Holidaymakers are not just taking the easy ride in their family cars, thousands are taking to the road in racing cars, push bikes and even campervans.

Check out the Bealach na Ba single-track road to see why that is surprising and one for the adventure lovers itch list.

The Gold Coast, Jeffrey’s Bay , Thurso…

Thurso is the northernmost town of Scotland’s mainland and it is known for its surf. Thurso East at the mouth of the Thurso River is the surf spot which has hosted international competitions.

Brace yourself, autumn and winter months are best for waves.

Adventure doesn’t have to involve moving. You could live like a queen for one night in one of Scotland’s castles (the ones with roofs and heating), making full use of the hotel facilities and living like the clan.

Ackergill Tower Castle is home to Europe’s largest treehouse, find out more at this North Coast 500 accommodation guide .

North Coast 500 Adventure Activities In Scotland

Squat down, strap up and snowball down a hill at 25 mph. Welcome to the world of zorbing. Just outside of Edinburgh, visitors over 5 foot and under 16 stone can experience the life of a hamster that has lost its feet.

It is a misconception that it always snows in Scotland, which is a shame because we have five ski centres – Cairngorms, Glenshee, Glencoe (my favourite area of Scotland), Nevis Range and The Lecht.

Come December, skiers and boarders have their eyes glued to the social media accounts of the ski resorts to assess if the dump is worth the trip.

Never fear, there is ski during the other seasons too in the form of dry slope at Midlothian Sports Centre and fake snow at Braehead in Glasgow.

In Scotland, we have special mountains that come in at over 3000 feet called Munros. There are approximately 282 Munros and hikers call the past time of climbing them, Munro bagging.

Out of the 282, there are Munros suitable for the beginner hiker such as Ben Lomond or Ben Vorlich (our dog, Bowie’s first) at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.

The highest peak at 4411 feet is Ben Nevis (Fort William), which is an additional part of Scotland multi-day hiking trail, the West Highland Way. Definitely one of the best adventure activities in Scotland.

West Highland Way Adventure Activities In Scotland

Take in the beautiful scenery of the west coast of Scotland over 4-6 days starting just outside of Glasgow at Milngavie and finishing up 96 miles later in Fort William.

This trek is called the West Highland Way. The Way takes you through rolling hills, past lochs and villages.

You can hire bag handlers to drop your rucksacks off each day at your next guesthouse (B&B) or go hard and carry your bag, tent and camp up each night. Wild camping is legal in Scotland if you follow the camping code.

The Isle of Bute liked the idea of this hike and coined the name ‘West Island Way’ – two-day hike around the island which is short train and ferry ride from the city of Glasgow.

West Island Way Adventure Activities In Scotland

Winter doesn’t have to be coming at the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven. Part of the West Highland Way takes you through the valley at Kinlochleven and in the town sits the indoor activity centre, the Ice Factor.

500 tonnes of real snow and ice is packed 12 metres high; customers hack their way up the wall with the aid of the partner at the other end of the pulley.

The Ice Factor also has an indoor rock-climbing wall for beginners through to experienced climbers that can handle routes from 3+ to 8a.

Then for a bit of fun, you can try the outdoor aerial course full of ropes, strings and swings to test your balance (my parents could not manage it).

So the next time that someone tells you that they are going on a 5-day bus tour of the Scottish Highlands, you can tell them that they are wimps and missing out of the best adventure of their trip – swinging, surfing and having a swally of course!

Explore Scotland’s bewitching landscape under sail

Boasting more than 10,000 miles of stunning coastline, Scotland and its islands provide something for everyone; a unique land of opportunity, rich with history, wildlife, jaw-dropping beauty and world-leading whiskies.

The sensational Scottish islands (all 750 of them) are considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Scotland’s immense coastline, with remote islets, secluded sea lochs and sheltered coves, many of which are inaccessible by land.

Whether you want to island-hop, go off-grid, wildlife watch, or gourmet dine, our tailored Scottish sailing holidays in the Hebrides, Orkney, or the Firth of Clyde will ensure memories that last a lifetime.

The Western Isles

Absorb the Hebridean magic aboard the majestic Bessie Ellen , comfy yachts Zuza or Stravaigin , staysail Steady, tall ship Schooner Blue Clipper .

From early summer, the Western Isles bathe in long warm sunny days and are home to ideal sailing conditions. When the wind decides to blow in from the Atlantic, your skipper will know plenty of sheltered bays or long winding lochs to continue your adventures.

From Iona’s white sands to the enchanting isles of Arran, Rum, Staffa, Iona, Jura and Islay, the Sea of the Hebrides beckons to its remote landscapes, historic monuments, local cultures and magical wildlife. Once anchored, there is plenty of time to explore ashore, climb a high point, swim off the boat or explore remote white sandy beaches.

A highlight for wildlife enthusiasts is a visit to the puffin colony, where you will be welcomed among their burrows. Other birds of prey including Buzzards, Kestrels, Sparrowhawks and Peregrines can also be spotted on the beautiful Scottish coastline. Hebrides sailing trips can also offer unforgettable encounters with Common, Bottlenose, Whitebeak and Risso dolphins. There are plenty of whales in this part of the world too; including the resident pod of Orca, many have been lucky enough to see gliding elegantly through the waters.

Watch The Girl Outdoors sailing the Hebrides on  Bessie Ellen. Or, for more detailed information on the islands that make up the Inner and Outer Hebrides, take a look at our blogs on  Mull and her surrounding Isles , and another on the  Sailing to St. Kilda.

Scotland Outer Hebrides Isle of Harris

The Orkneys

With no fewer than 36 Sites of Special Scientific Interest, 13 Special Protection Areas and 13 RSPB nature reserves, a voyage along the east coast of Scotland aboard is equally unforgettable. You’ll visit authentic fishing villages and working harbours, taking in the history and sights of the island of Rousay, the small atmospheric harbour of Whitehills, and Kirkwall.

Wildlife in the Orkneys is spectacular. You’ll cruise below its towering cliffs, home to over a million seabirds, including puffins, thousands of grey and common seals and an array of marine mammals.

The Firth of Clyde

Protected by the Kintyre peninsula with an archipelago of rugged islands, the Firth of Clyde is a fascinating area of Scotland. With the deepest coastal waters in the British Isles, ancient castles, meandering lochs and an abundance of wildlife, this area is certainly best explored by boat.

The Kyles of Bute is said to be one of the prettiest sailing passages in Britain and, with fjord-like lochs and heather-clad hills, these waters make for perfect sheltered sailing experience.

If you're new to sailing or even if you're an experienced sailor but new to Scottish waters, why not charter a skippered vessel and let an experienced hand take over and do the organising, navigating and sailing?

Charter a yacht in Scotland

We have incredible yachts ready to sail from Largs in Scotland (other bases available on request).

We specialise in Yacht and Catamaran Charters in Scotland

Sailing around Scotland

Scotland is a beautiful and famously tranquil place to sail. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht in Scotland. Near our base in Largs you can sail to find ruined castles, cute fishing villages, historic seaside towns, Viking battlefields, local pubs, and, of course Whisky distilleries.

There's a dramatic coastline and the whole area is teeming with wildlife: from porpoises, seals and dolphins (and the tastiest fish in the UK) below the water, through to strutting wild stags and plenty of wild birds, including birds of prey.

Sailing-wise, there's a reliable breeze, plenty of interesting passages and islands to hop around, and some top-drawer marina facilities - including one with its own spa and infinity pool. The Scottish people are renowned for their hospitality and good humour.

Our Yacht Charter base in Scotland

SAILING RATING:  Intermediate / Advanced - there's interesting and changeable weather conditions, plus tides, so some experience is useful before sailing in Scotland. The minimum sailing qualifications for chartering bareboat here are also higher than in the Med (see below).

WHEN TO GO:  The sailing season runs from April to November , with peak season being in the summer months. The weather can vary dramatically over a week, so you'll need everything from shorts and t-shirts to warm clothes and foul-weather gear, just in case, particularly outside of peak season. There's winds throughout the season, and short 3-4 day charters are possible in the off-peak - ask us if you are interested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  You'll need RYA Day Skipper (or above) for smaller boats or RYA Yachtmaster for the larger ones ( or your local equivalent ) to charter a boat in Scotland - ask us if you are unsure of whether your qualification will be ok. If you're not qualified, we can find you a professional skipper .

VISA REQUIREMENTS:  Scotland is currently part of the UK and the EU , which means UK and EU passport holders can travel there at will. US and Australian passport holders do not need a visa unless planning to stay in Europe for longer than 90 days.

GETTING THERE:  Our base in Largs, in the Firth of Cylde, is within a 40 minute drive of both the main Glasgow International airport and the budget Glasgow Prestwick airport. It also has great connections by rail (with regular direct trains from Glasgow) and road to the rest of the UK. We can help arrange transfers to or from the marina, as well as helping you get provisions on board if your flight arrives late at night.

Charter a Yacht or Catamaran in Scotland

We can help you find the ideal yacht for your sailing holiday in Scotland (Sadly there are no charter catamarans up here yet). We only work with the very best professional charter operators in the area, who we have met, know, and who we trust to give you the same outstanding customer service as you'll get from PlainSailing.com .

Use the pink search box above to look for boats for yourself - they have live pricing and availability and you can filter the results to find your ideal boat - or start a Live Chat with our award-winning bookings team for help, advice, or anything else!

Where to sail in Scotland

We charter yachts and catamarans from one base in Scotland - from Largs Yacht Haven, on the Firth of Cylde, just 30 miles West of Glasgow. See below for ideas of where to sail when you get there (But be sure to check out our detailed destination guides to find out more).

LARGS   Ideas of where to sail: There's enough to keep you busy in the Firth of Clyde for a week: it's a quiet place to sail, and there are castles, bays, anchorages and whisky distilleries to be explored, as well as some fine restaurants. Longer charters could head up the Crinan canal to visit the Isle of Skye and the Inner Hebrides, or it's even possible to sail South to the Isle of Man or Northern Ireland.

Cost of a Sailing Holiday in Scotland?

Prices change depending upon what sort of boat you are chartering, and when you would like to charter, and yachting offers great value for money because the fee includes a full-day activity, a means of transport and your overnight accommodation!

Charters are normally in periods of a week, from Saturday (check-in at 4pm) to Saturday (check-out at 10am), though you're required to be back at the charter base on the Friday evening. You can charter a 3-cabin yacht for as little as £2990 / week or a 4-cabin yacht from £3545 / week - use the pink search box for live prices and availability.

In Scotland the yachts are chartered out on a 'leave-as-you-find' basis but you can book End Cleaning in advance if you prefer for someone else to do it for you. You will also need to pay a little extra if you want to rent bedding, towels, waterproofs and wellingtons! You'll also need to leave a security deposit on check-in (similar to a hire car, and usually placed as a pre-authorisation on a credit card).

You can also add transfers, an outboard motor, early check-in, security deposit insurance or other extras to your booking (if they are not already included) for an additional fee.  We can also arrange for a Skipper , Hostess or Chef to be on board - in Scotland, these normally cost an average of £150 / day, excluding tips.

New to charter?

The Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) is due at the time of the final charter payment. Under MYBA terms, this sum is usually equivalent to 30 per cent of the total charter fee, but may be up to 40 per cent in some cases.

Intended to cover the operating expenses of a charter as explained under Charter Terms, such as fuel, food, drinks, port fees and ad hoc incidentals, the APA will be given to the captain before the start of your charter. The Captain will ensure that the yacht is fully fuelled and provisioned when you step on board. While an up-to-date summary of accounts can be requested at any time during your charter, a full set of accounts will normally be submitted by your captain at the end of the cruise. If, during the charter, the expenditure exceeds the sum already paid, additional cash funds will be required at once.

All outstanding bills from the yacht charter should be settled in cash or by bank transfer before your final disembarkation. Of course, any remaining credit at the end of your charter will be reimbursed to you in full. On request, transfer arrangements to and from the yacht can be made by Burgess or by the yacht’s captain, payment for which will be deducted from your APA.

Sailing in scotland: tips for a sailing holiday on the west coast.

Gliding along the deep blue waters of the west coast, anchoring in remote bays or visiting bustling island communities – for many, a sailing holiday on the Scottish west coast sounds like a dream. In this guide to sailing in Scotland, I’ll tell you how to turn that dream into reality. I’ll cover what it’s like to explore the coast by boat and share my top tips for an unforgettable sailing holiday in Scotland.

This blog post was commissioned by Stravaigin Sailing . All opinions are my own.

This post contains affiliate links from which I may make a commission. Find out more here . All opinions are my own.

Ever since spotting a sailing yacht anchored in the mirrorlike waters surrounding the Shiant Isles on a hot summer’s day, I’ve been dreaming of exploring Scotland by sailboat.

This dream finally came true when I was invited to join a west coast sailing trip with Stravaigin Sailing . We sailed from Oban around the Isles of Kerrera and Lismore and anchored overnight in a beautiful bay on the Isle of Mull.

It turns out that the west coast of Scotland is one of the best places in the world for sailing . With its rugged coastline, countless bays, sounds, sea lochs and islands, there are always new waters to explore.

In this post, I’ll tell you about my experience of sailing in Scotland aboard the Stravaigin and what to expect on a sailing holiday in Scotland. I’ll also include my top tips for booking your own sailing trip on the west coast, what to pack and how to get the most out of your time on board.

Why should you go sailing in Scotland?

There are many reasons to give sailing in Scotland a go – here are three to convince you.

1) Easy island hopping

Sailing in Scotland can take you to remote bays in the Inner Hebrides, the outer islands of the Western Isles and countless island communities. Instead of planning complicated ferry itineraries, you’ll enjoy island hopping with ease.

It’s easy to reach remote islands and anchorages to visit villages and towns that are otherwise hard to get to – especially if you don’t want to spend multiple days in one location.

Sailing in Scotland with Stravaigin Sailing

2) Memorable wildlife encounters

In the summertime, Scotland’s coastal waters are teeming with life. A sailing holiday on the west coast of Scotland is the perfect opportunity for wildlife watching in the water and in the air.

You may spot dolphin pods, orca from the North Isles or the rare West Coast Community, minke whales (especially around the Small Isles or basking sharks beneath the surface. In the air, keep your eyes out for majestic eagles, elegant gannets, goofy puffins and many more.

3) A flexible itinerary

Sailing is a great way to reach remote bays and uninhabited islands. It’s also an incredibly flexible way to travel since you’re not restricted to a road network – you can travel in any direction you chose.

When you travel on land (by car or public transport), water usually represents an obstacle. You have to take a ferry, find a bridge or follow a winding road around it. But when you’re on a sailboat, the coastal waters become your motorway of sorts. Unlimited adventure!

Sailing in Scotland with Stravaigin Sailing

Stravaigin Sailing offers fully-catered sailing holidays on the west coast of Scotland.

John Ormiston is the owner of the Stravaigin yacht and also the skipper. Fuelled by the adventure novels of his youth, he has had a lifelong passion for sailing and mountaineering. John has many decades of experience as a skipper. Not only has he always had a family boat for private use, but he has also worked as a professional skipper, often being hired by other people to take them out on their own boat.

With the Stravaigin, John fulfilled his dream to have a large boat of his own and the opportunity to take guests on immersive sailing holidays in Scotland.

land yachting in scotland

The Stravaigin yacht

The Stravaigin is a 44 ft yacht that comfortably sleeps 8 people – that’s 6 guests and 2 crew. (Theoretically, there is space for 10 people but it would get a little crowded.)

That means that small groups are guaranteed on a sailing holiday aboard the Stravaigin. The yacht is also suitable and available for private charters .

There are four cabins in total. Two cabins with double berths are near the stern (rear of the boat); one cabin with double berths is in the bow and a fourth cabin with two bunk berths is also near the front.

Stravaigin has many charger outlets, so you can charge your phone and other devices as needed.

The boat has two toilets and a shower, as well as a galley kitchen and a bright, spacious saloon.

You can find a picture of the layout and all the technical specs about the yacht here .

Sailing Holidays in Scotland: Itinerary Options

Stravaigin Sailing offers trips departing from Oban and Mallaig , two major ports on the west coast of Scotland.

The sailing trips last between 3 and 10 days and there is a wide range of itineraries and destinations to choose from. Here are some highlights:

  • Around the Isle of Mull in 7 days, incl. detours to other islands like Iona, Staffa and the Treshnish Isles
  • Isle of Skye and the Small Isles (Canna, Eigg, Rum & Muck) in 7 days
  • A 10-day journey to the Outer Hebrides and the remote archipelago of St Kilda
  • Exploring the Southern Inner Hebrides from Islay to Jura, Colonsay and Gigha (7 days)

One thing to keep in mind is that while John will provide you with a suggested itinerary, weather and tidal conditions may require him to adjust the route, rearrange the order of destinations or substitute some sites for others.

The route may also be adjusted depending on your comfort level on board, for example, you might have the choice between a remote anchorage or anchoring in a port with access to restaurants, shower facilities etc.

Multi-activity Sailing Holidays

One of John’s specialities aboard Stravaigin Sailing is to offer multi-activity sailing adventures .

You may not be a passionate sailor (yet) or are still finding your sea-legs or someone else roped you into booking a sailing holiday in Scotland. Either way, you might be interested in adding another activity to the itinerary.

John works with local guides to deliver a variety of multi-activity trips throughout the year. This includes:

  • Sailing and Wild Swimming with a swim guide
  • Sailing, Hill Walking and Foraging with Heather Thomas-Smith
  • Whisky Cruises
  • Gaelic Culture Cruise with Dan the Merman (no language requirement)

The Stravaigin also carries a couple of paddleboards which guests can use while the yacht is anchored.

Swimming near the Stravaigin

What route should you pick?

The best way to choose a route for your sailing holiday on the Scottish west coast is to contact Stravaigin Sailing and tell John about what you’d like to experience.

Depending on your timeframe, budget, sailing experience and interests, John will be able to recommend which of his scheduled sailing trips might be most suitable.

Note that most sailing holidays and adventures scheduled for 2023 are already fully booked. Contact Stravaigin Sailing directly to ask which trips still have space, or check their 2024 calendar to book ahead for the next season.

Tips for a Sailing Holiday in Scotland (& FAQ)

Do you need sailing experience.

No, you do not require sailing experience on any sailing holidays or adventures with Stravaigin Sailing. John advises that if it is your first time though, you book a shorter journey before going for a 7 to 10-day journey. The last thing you want is to spend a lot of money on a holiday you realise on day 2 is not your thing.

Can I learn how to sail on board?

Yes! John Ormiston is a qualified sailing instructor. While he no longer runs sailing courses, guests who are interested have the opportunity to learn about sailing informally on board.

No one has to help – John and his crew member can sail the boat on their own. But if you’re curious, or need something to do on board (more on strategies against sea sickness later), you can help with the sailing of the boat. This may entail hoisting the mainsail, controlling the steering wheel, or assisting in tacking the boat (i.e. making turns).

land yachting in scotland

Should you join a group or privately charter the boat?

The answer to this question depends on your budget and who you are travelling with.

As a solo traveller, joining a scheduled group trip is the most affordable option. Private cabins are available but limited to one per trip.

If you’re travelling with your partner, family or group of friends, you may appreciate the opportunity to adjust the route and activities to your specific needs. However, consider that you’ll have to pay the cost of running the boat by yourself, so unless you share with 5 paying friends, it will be more expensive to charter the Stravaigin privately.

Note, that the Stravaigin is not available for “self-sail” holiday. Skipper John and his crew member are always on the steering wheel.

What does a typical day on board the Stravaigin look like?

The day starts around 8 am with fresh coffee, morning wildlife watching, an optional swim and a hearty, cooked breakfast in the saloon.

Depending on how far you’d like to go each day, if you’re keen to include other activities and of course the weather, you may spend the morning at your anchorage. You could go for a swim or take out the paddleboards, or John can drop you off on land for a wander before you sail on.

On other days, you may leave after breakfast and spend more time exploring your next destination.

Lunch is typically served at sea on your way to the next overnight destination.

John will find a place to anchor before dinner which – depending on weather conditions – you may enjoy up on deck or down in the saloon. There is always plenty of time to relax and enjoy some nibbles, and hopefully a dazzling west coast sunset.

The evening can be spent stargazing, trying drams from the bar or telling adventure stories around the table.

Time on board vs. on land

How much time you spend on land vs on board the yacht depends on your preferences / the preferences of the group. Some people prefer to sail all day, others would rather explore the islands. John aims for a good balance between both.

What if the weather is bad?

The Stravaigin is a big yacht and can handle any weather the Scottish west coast might throw at it. However, John wants his guests to have a good time, so will only sail if the conditions allow a comfortable experience.

The great thing about sailing is that if the forecast is bad in one place (or even worse – wind still), you can simply sail in another direction and escape the weather.

Food & drink on board

All trips on board the Stravaigin are fully catered. John and his first mate prepare all meals for you and source many of the ingredients locally. While you enjoy a walk across an island, John might be away to collect a bag of mussels from a local fisherman.

That said, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diets can also be accommodated.

The boat has a small bar with beer, wine and local whiskies and gins – although I don’t recommend drinking too much as sailing with a hangover is considerably less fun. Trust me 😅

Vegan wrap for lunch on deck

What about seasickness?

Not everybody is born with natural sea-legs – meaning that some people take some time to get used to the constant movements of the yacht. If you know or are worried that you’ll react badly, here are some remedies and strategies to deal with seasickness:

  • Stay outside: The best way for me to overcome seasickness is to get fresh air. Stay up on deck (rather than below in the cabin or saloon), look at the horizon and take in the fresh air.
  • Eat ginger: Eating ginger can help settle an upset stomach. You can try ginger biscuits, candied ginger pieces or ginger tea – all things you can easily buy and bring with you.
  • Stay hydrated: This is probably just life advice. If you are actually sick on the boat, it’s super important to rehydrate.
  • Distract yourself: My favourite way to deal with seasickness is to distract myself. If I have something else to focus on, it’s much easier to forget about the weird feeling in my body. I spent most of my time at sea taking the steering wheel and learning sailing terminology from John.
  • Seasickness medication: If nothing else helps, there is a range of seasickness pills you could try. I recommend finding meds that don’t make you too drowsy. I’d also try them before your big sailing trip to see how you react to them.
  • Lie down: If all else fails, you may find comfort in retreating to your cabin and lying down. (I have in the past combined this with taking meds.)

You’ll be pleased to hear (maybe?) that there are sick-bags in the cabins throughout the Stravaigin yacht.

What to bring on a sailing holiday

Stravaigin Sailing provides a full kit list to help you pack for your sailing holiday in Scotland. Here are some of my top tips:

  • Plenty of layers: We had glorious sunshine during our sailing trip in April, but the temperature felt a lot lower because of the wind on the boat. Make sure you pack warm layers, a warm outer jacket, a waterproof jacket and trousers for wet days, a woolly hat and gloves. I actually brought my swimming dry robe instead of a puffer jacket.
  • Shoes and clothes that are easy to get in and out of, so it’s easier to get changed in close quarters. I really love my Barbour ankle rubber boots – they are the perfect travel shoe for Scotland and great on a sailing yacht.
  • A sunhat and sun lotion: While it felt chilly in the wind, the sun was beaming down on us. The sea reflects much of the sunlight back at you, so it’s extra important to protect yourself from the rays. Bring a hat to cover your head (nothing is worse than a burnt scalp, trust me) and sun lotion with high SPF. Top tip: Make sure your hat stays on your head even in strong winds.
  • Seasickness remedies – see above
  • Binoculars to spot wildlife along the coast, in the air and away in the distance.
  • If you’re into photography, bring a zoom lense(s) for the same purpose.

All bedding and towels are provided by Stravaigin Sailing, as well as personal flotation devices to wear up on deck.

land yachting in scotland

Sailing on the west coast of Scotland aboard the Stravaigin was everything I dreamed of, and yet, it exceeded my expectations. Even though I haven’t quite found my sea-legs yet, I thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the boat and exploring the coast of Scotland in this unique way.

I can’t wait to plan another trip soon and hope you also feel inspired to give sailing in Scotland a go!

SCOTLAND AND HEBRIDES

Scotland’s west coast has as big a reputation for its wide variety of weather and strong tides as it does for its breath-taking beauty. with such stark contrasts in the weather and sailing conditions all part of the charm, it is easy to be put off..

But this stunning area of the UK offers some of the finest sailing in the world. Protected cruising grounds are set at the heart of some of the most spectacular scenery, and while careful planning is essential, help and advice is plentiful with numerous guides and suggested itineraries available for charters to make the most of your time there.

Tarbert Outer Hebrides Scotland

Islay and Gigha

Islay is a must-visit destination - if not for its beauty, then at least for the many fine whisky distilleries that have been producing scotch for hundreds of years. even though it is only 25 miles long, nine active distilleries are producing some of the finest single malts known to mankind..

There are plenty of opportunities to visit the distilleries (where you will receive a warm welcome) and a variety of tours are available. The main harbour is Port Ellen, which makes the perfect base to explore this famous island and there are several anchorages along Islay’s south coast.

Gigha is a tiny yet super-hospitable island of Gigha. This beautiful place is surrounded by turquoise seas and fringed with white sand beaches. Since 2002, it has been owned by the community, which explains the warm welcome. Gigha is only 7 miles long and a mile and a half wide, yet it boasts its very own Michelin recommended Boathouse Restauran t. There are great walks with stunning views and awesome sunsets, not to mention a challenging nine-hole course for the keen golfer. You will find the most popular anchorage in Ardminish Bay.

Cruising the inner hebrides, the inner hebrides offer stunning landscapes, lochs, beach anchorages, wildlife, walks, and mountain climbing. and then there’s world-beating food, especially the local seafood and fish, and, of course, fine whisky to enjoy after all that exercise..

The Scottish Hebrides were made for exploring by sailboat. Offering a rare chance to explore some of Britain’s most inaccessible wilderness alongside rugged mountains and glittering lochs, the magic of this area won’t be lost on you as you cruise through stunning gold-sand beaches, craggy inlets and picturesque seaside towns. Friendly locals will help to make it the trip of a lifetime.

There is much-undisturbed wildlife, set against an enticingly rugged and tranquil backdrop. While sailing here you may spot dolphins, seals, whales and basking sharks. Bird watchers will also delight in puffins, oystercatchers, fulmars and shags all native to this area. The Inner western coast offers fjord-like lochs to glide through. The Outer Hebrides is virtually untouched – even at the height of summer, the seas are still blissfully quiet.

The best time for sailing charters in Scotland

The best time for a sailing charter in Scotland is during the summer months of July and August when the weather will be at its warmest with temperatures up to 18oC. April and May have the lowest rainfall, while June, July and August can be unpredictable.
