Tech Billionaire Launches ‘NetJet for Yachts’ With Fleet Miami

  • Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest Youtube

Avatar photo

The latest post from a Pursuitist guest writer.

MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor collects yachts the way some enthusiasts collect watches or cars. And when you make your living at the top of the tech world, it seems simple enough to launch a small company with a minimum $250,000 membership fee, right?

Well, for Saylor, it is. His newest venture, Fleet Miami , lets members purchase blocks of credits to be exchanged for charter across a fleet of luxury yachts, many of which are part of Saylor’s personal collection.

Buy in to rent the 154′, five-stateroom “Usher,” the acclaimed 147′, Feadship “Harle” with its crew of nine, the 87′ “Moksha” or the more manageable 35-passenger, 36′ “Julia” for a quick cruise around Biscayne Bay. Crave a trip, not just a three-hour tour? Buy a seven-day charter through the Florida Keys for  $70,000-$280,000, depending on yacht selection.

In a post on his personal Facebook page, owner/founder Saylor made light of his new venture, writing “think of it as NetJets for yachts, albeit more exclusive and less ambitious.” Nice one.

We’re excited to see where this new company sails in the coming months.

By Doug Gollan , September 4, 2019

Netjets has added yacht rental and management specialist Northrop & Johnson to its luxury partners, including Four Seasons, Wynn Las Vegas, and Canyon Ranch

Northrop & johnson sells over $100 million of luxury yacht charters annually. the company currently has $1.2 billion in superyacht listings for sale..

With its global private air solutions via fractional ownership, leases and jet cards, and partnerships with luxury hotels, resorts, spas, and ground transportation services, NetJets, the largest private aviation provider in the world, now has the oceans covered as well.

Northrop & Johnson, a Florida-based specialist in yacht rentals and yacht sales, management, and marketing, will offer “exclusive benefits” to customers of the private air provider.

Luxury yacht charter benefits

In a press release received by Private Jet Card Comparisons , the companies said, “With a shared focus on delivering exceptional service, both Northrop & Johnson and NetJets can offer exclusive benefits through their partnership, allowing both brands to provide their clients with an array of special offerings.”

Northrop & Johnson values the luxury travel experience with the same vigor. Pat Gallagher, president, NetJets

Pat Gallagher, president of sales and marketing for the fractional share and jet card provider added, “Northrop & Johnson values the luxury travel experience with the same vigor. This partnership showcases the NetJets advantage: bringing owners unmatched access to what they’re most passionate about.”

Northrop & Johnson COO Daniel Ziriakus, said, “Our strategic partnerships cater to some of the world’s most distinguished travelers, and NetJets’ unwavering focus on safety and service makes them an ideal private aviation partner. We look forward to broadening luxury travel options for our yachting enthusiasts and extending the same extraordinary experiences to NetJets owners.”

The agreement includes what is described as “exclusive benefits” for each other’s customers. The release said, “With Northrop & Johnson charter experts arranging the superyacht itinerary at each destination in collaboration with the world’s largest and most diverse private jet fleet, travelers can enjoy a seamless service with private air travel aboard NetJets and accommodation aboard the world’s best superyachts for charter.”

According to its website, Northrop & Johnson was founded in 1948 and is headquartered in Ft. Lauderdale, with U.S. offices in Newport Beach, Newport, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego and international locations in Australia, France, Hong Kong, Monaco, Spain, and Thailand.

Yacht rentals range from under $100,000 to over $900,000 a week

On its website, the company lists yachts for charter with weekly rates starting under $100,000 and ranging up to over $900,000. In terms of yachts for sale , 280-feet long Sunrays can be had for an asking price of $142 million, although there are also yachts priced under $10 million.

According to NetJets’ website, its travel partners include Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, Mandarin Hotel Group, The Leading Hotels of the World, Canyon Ranch, Wynn Las Vegas, The K Club in Ireland, Avis, Empire/CLS Worldwide Chauffeured Limousine Services, and Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.

Ziriakus declined to provide more information on partner benefits and said specific details will be available from sales contacts at both companies.

As an example of perks with other partners, customers of NetJets are provided Chairman’s Club perks with Avis, including drop-off at the aircraft door, car delivery within 25 miles, and complimentary five-day rental.

How much does a superyacht cost?

At Disney World, in addition to the offerings in its Premium Family Vacations and access to its Disney Signature Specialists for planning help, NetJets customers get special “animal experiences,” a private character experience meal,  as well as a dedicated VIP guide for up to four days and seven hours per day.

NetJets partnerships include Indycar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Club Magnolia during The Masters, offering valet parking, shuttles to the tournament, secure baggage storage, and refreshments. It is also the official private jet provider for the PGA Tour and PGA Champions Tour.

Superyachts are a hot luxury travel market

Superyacht charter is a hot segment of the luxury travel market. Ziriakus pointed to inquiries, which he said nearly doubled to 5,403 from 2,756 between 2015 and 2018.

Citing Boat International’s Market Intelligence, he said Northrop & Johnson is “the world’s top yacht brokerage” for yachts more than 75 feet in length. Over the past two years, it sold 105 megayachts and 215 yachts overall.

In terms of charters, he said the company books over 500 weeks of charters per year with an average value of $214,000 imputing more than $100 million in annual revenue on rentals. Ziriakus said the company currently has $1.2 billion in listings for sale.

The deal between NetJets and Northrop & Johnson isn’t the first between private aviation and yachting providers. Last year Magellan Jets said it was partnering with Worth Avenue Yachts, and in 2017 Air Partner joined Camper & Nicholsons to market air/seas packages.

Good times for NetJets

NetJets recently reported it is getting a boost in inquiries from owners of private jets due to the upcoming ADS-B requirements . The mandate which goes into effect in 2020 will make it virtually impossible to hide the identity of your private jet from trackers.

Using a charter or fractional aircraft means trackers, including competitors, can’t follow your whereabouts by monitoring flights via your tail number. In terms of fractional ownership, according to Traqpak, NetJets controls 64% of the fractional market.

Just last week NetJets said it adding the Phenom 300 to its jet card line-up giving it a true light jet solution . The Cessna Citation Excel/XLS, a midsize jet , had been its point of entry. It also added the Citation Sovereign to its jet card offerings.

On the fractional and lease side of its business, NetJets along with Flexjet and VistaJet is one of the few providers to offer globally-oriented large cabin fixed-rate, guaranteed availability solutions . According to its website, Northrop & Johnson offers charters to worldwide destinations.

MYS 2021: NetJets on the Surge in Private Travel

By Freya Cottrell

Joined by Carsten Michaelis, Executive Director of Sales & Marketing, we discuss the noticeable surge in demand for private travel following COVID-19, future-proofing post-pandemic, and a business model distinguished by a unique appeal to UHNW's. Not only this, but how Netjets plans to lower their environmental impact, as well as the exciting new announcements in the pipeline.

What is it about NetJets’ business model that sets it apart from other private aviation providers? Here to shed light on the globally renowned name is Carsten Michaelis, Executive Director of Sales & Marketing for the company. " We are the market leader in private aviation. " shares Michaelis. " And what our owners appreciate is that they only buy a share of an aircraft, instead of buying a full aircraft. "

Having become an advocate for sustainability in the private aviation sphere, the company's latest intiative launched to offset their clients’ CO2 footprints is an undeniable step towards progress and change. " As a market leader we have a responsibility to really drive action and really create awareness within the industry." comments Michaelis. " We started very early, in 2008, with our Blue Skies programme where owners have the possibility to seemless purchase carbon credits to offset their flight. We have been carbon neutral since 2012. "

Netjets also had plenty to share when it came to new deliveries. Having delivered a range of new private jets this year we were eager to find out what the company attributed to this remarkable growth. " We grew significantly and we further commit to further aircraft orders that we have taken. We ordered another 100 aircrafts worth 2.5 billion U.S. dollars. " shares Michaelis." It's about growing the fleet with the demand that we have [...] and the other thing that we are continuously investing in is our sustainable intiatives. "

NetJets was established in 1964 and has been leading the way in private aviation ever since. With 760 plus (and growing!) jets, in 5,000+ airports spanning more than 200 countries along with its flexible and fractional ownership model means that NetJets Owners can access the most luxurious fleet of jets, whenever and wherever their lifestyle demands dictate.

The business operates around four core principals; safety, service, access and exclusive events –tailored to Owners’ individual interests. The tailored and exclusive events are a result of the longstanding relationships NetJets strives to develop with its Owners and a prime example of this was the two-day experience I enjoyed at Art Basel and the Monaco Yacht show.

Taking place at Messe Basel, the world-renowned event opened this year on 23rd September, with preview days on 21st and 22nd September. Preview days are by invitation only and, this is just one of the exclusive privileges NetJets Owners can enjoy. Preview days’ buzz with an eclectic mix of who’s who in the art world, wealthy collectors and the crème de la crème of high society – miss it and it’s highly likely you’ll miss out. As a NetJets guest I found myself as part of this select VIP ‘in-crowd’ this year.

Along with access to Art Basel preview days, NetJets Owners are invited to a private dinner, which was hosted this year at the stunning The Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois, a historic five-star hotel overlooking the Rhine. But this is more than just dinner, this is an evening of elite artistic indulgence, where art-lovers meet artists and gallery Owner’s vibe with fellow enthusiasts, made possible only by the exclusive experiences that NetJets prides itself upon. We enjoyed the company of the Austyn Weiner, a Miami born, LA based multimedia artist whose practice donates and engages a recourse in chaos. The entire evening, was itself, an exceptional work of art.

Doubtful if the much-anticipated flagship fair would even take place this year, Art Basel was rescheduled from its usual slot in June to September which perfectly coincided with the dates of Monaco Yacht Show, making Basel to Nice an even more popular route for NetJets Owners than ever before, and this is the flight path I was about to encounter.

The Flight Experience

A NetJets car took us from the hotel to Basel airport, we were running slightly late but that didn’t matter…. travelling by private jet means we had more control over our own schedule. We were greeted by on the on-ground team who whisked away our luggage and as is if by magic made its way to the aircraft. Coffee, tea, champagne along with sandwiches and sweet treats were served in a relaxed manner in the lounge where we met our pilot, co-pilot and stewardess. The passion, and pride, they have for their respective roles, guests and each other was more than clear to see.

We proceeded to board the Challenger 350 super mid-size jet which accommodates up to nine passengers. All jet interiors and layout are designed by the expert team at NetJets and is done so with the utmost comfort and style in mind. This in-house design also sets a standard so that NetJets passengers are assured consistency no matter which aircraft they choose to travel on. The sun was shining, conditions were clear and life felt good!

Life soon became exceptionally good as our delightful stewardess, Rollenda, served us warm Pasteis de Nata – an acknowledgement to her Portuguese heritage, before pouring us a glass or two of fizz to accompany our lunch.  We learned that Rollenda has been with NetJets for 21 years and Paul our pilot 17 years – these are just two examples (of which there are many more) of loyalty to the company and testament that it is not just the jet Owners who are well looked after by the business.

The flight time from Basel to Nice was only one hour, and I completely understand time saving is one of the key benefits of private jet travel, however I could have happily spent the afternoon soaring in luxury at 45,000 feet.

This altitude is higher than the average commercial flight which tend to cruise at 35,000-39,000 feet and because we are flying ‘above the weather’ the result is a much smoother flight.  Despite flying at such altitude, the cabin air pressure is lower than that of a commercial flight, which means passengers are less likely to suffer jetlag, it is much better for the skin. Win win!

After (reluctantly) disembarking the jet we took a short car journey to the helicopter which was waiting for us in Nice, again the ground team warmly welcomed us and the whole transition was smooth and entirely stress-free. The helicopter ride to Monaco was a speedy seven minutes with spectacular views of the twinkling Côte d’Azur below.

The Monaco Yacht Show

This world class event represents the pinnacle of luxury lifestyle, with the iconic Port Hercules welcoming more than 30,000 yacht enthusiasts to view, buy and sell the biggest, grandest and glitziest yachts – even the tender boats deliver a more than impressive wow factor!

NetJets has been an exhibitor at the prestigious MYS since 2014 and with many of their jet Owners sharing a passion for the yachting lifestyle, it’s the perfect place for the brand to entertain their sea-loving clients; offering them VIP access along with invitations to exclusive events.

As a guest of NetJets I was invited to step aboard (glass of champagne in hand!) and enjoy a private viewing of, NetJets long-standing partner Northrop and Johnson’s, Liberty – a 164ft super yacht that oozes space, style and charm. With exclusive amenities and a stunning interior designed by Rene Van Der Velden – think hammered mother of pearl bathroom wall, cashmere and silk blend carpet – this beauty charters at approx. €225,000 euros per week (+ expenses at around 30%) has six cabins which can accommodate up to 13 guests and is ran by a crew of 11. It’s currently on the market for €17,995,550 and with the pedigree market very much weighing in favour of the vendor it’s unlikely this super-yacht will be with a ‘for sale’ sign long.

To draw the whirlwind of a day to a close, we were invited by NetJets to enjoy dinner at the Yacht Club De Monaco. Founded in 1953 by Prince Rainier and presided over by HSH Prince Sovereign Albert II since 1984, the historic and prestigious club boasts more than 2,500 members from over 80 countries. It holds a highly unique position on the international yachting scene, and as testament to this the Yacht Club de Monaco’s burgee is flown by many of the world’s most esteemed private yachts.

netjets for yachts

In keeping with the revered nature of the Yacht Club it is extremely unusual for dinner reservations at the 1909 Restaurant – which takes its name from the year when the Yacht Club’s flagship  Tuiga  was built – to be held by anyone other than members, however, the NetJets magic wand was waved once more and we were seated at our tables in the elegant surroundings of this historic Yacht Club. A delicious and beautifully presented three course dinner, crafted by acclaimed Executive Chef, Renato Secchi and his team, was served. The food was perfection on a plate and the view overlooking the grandiose of the YCM Marina will be etched in my memory forever.

Conclusion

This trip was designed to give a little taste of the services and experiences NetJets Owners enjoy. All the glitz and glamour of literally living the high-life was unreservedly incredible and I’m hooked! I’d whole-hearted recommend NetJets to anyone considering private aviation Ownership – it’s more than being just an Owner its being part of a passionate, interesting and interested community.

After speaking to the team who make all this happen I gained an insightful appreciation of the effort and meticulous planning that goes into the execution of such a trip. Behind the scenes there is a team of 40 plus across multiple disciplines (from logistics, language specialists in customer care, event planning, weather experts and more) all of whom have the capability of making a trip like this feel effortless to those enjoying the experience.  Along with this it is highly evident that the team are more than just work colleagues, they are a family, bound and united by the common goal of delivering the highest of standards in everything that they do. Their shared passion for quality and personalised service is unwavered and the sky is literally the limit for the success this high-flying brand deserves.

Netjets by Michaela Cordes | 4th March, 2022 | Travel

Safety, flexibility and experience have always been the key ingredients of NetJets. Since the beginning of the pandemic the world’s biggest private jet operator has grown their customer base by 350 percent. GG took an exclusive look behind the scenes…

T here are some offers one simply cannot refuse. Like a glamorous invitation from NetJets – the biggest private jet operator – for a trip from Art Basel in Switzerland to Monte Carlo for the annual Monaco Yacht Show. And, of course, my special trip gets off to a fabulous start, even days before we actually take off. I receive an elegant gift, delivered by courier: a fine Smythson leather luggage tag with my initials embossed on it. Prior to our flight, I learn that there are more perks to being a NetJets owner. I automatically turn into a VIP guest at the world’s most important art fair. This means I do not have to wait in line like other visitors but am instead whisked through each gate without any delays. All I have to do is show my Covid certificate.

It’s the preview day of the world’s most renowned art show, before the official opening to the public and, of course, after a year’s hiatus, Art Basel is drawing large crowds again. But today, only VIPs and invited guests are permitted in by the exhibiting galleries who are showing their most valuable works of art, many of which will already be sold on this day.

NetJets is celebrating its 20th year as one of the biggest sponsors of the famous art fair. During those few days, the private jet company treats their owners to exclusive dinner parties to which some of the exhibiting artists are also invited. In the evening we are part of one of these elegant soirees in the place to be during Art Basel – the restaurant of the five-star Les Trois Rois hotel, where the gallerist Johann König from Berlin and the multimedia artist Austyn Weiner from Miami are both present.

“Flying with us is extraordinarily enjoyable and convenient, and gives you access to exclusive events.“ CARSTEN MICHAELIS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NETJETS EUROPE

NetJets – it seems – has every reason to celebrate. The pandemic has driven the demand for private jet travel to unforeseen levels. The worldwide biggest private jet operator, which was originally established by the American businessman Richard Santulli 58 years ago and acquired by Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. in 1998, faces record demand of more than 350 percent. “A surprisingly large number of people have come to appreciate the value of our concept and have become owners since the Covid crisis began,” explains Carsten Michaelis, Executive Director Sales & Marketing for NetJets Europe. “We don’t just offer a hygienically safe environment, what you get is absolute freedom from the limited flight schedules that commercial airlines offer.”

Demand has exploded since 2020. The fractional ownership company (members become part owners either by buying shares in a jet or they acquire credits for several flights) will expand their existing fleet by 125 new jets this year and has plans to hire a further 300 pilots. As a safeguard against such dynamic growth, the company is also investing heavily in its own resources: Apart from spending two and a half billion dollars on new aircraft, NetJets will be investing a yearly sum of 80 million dollars in crew training alone. The company employs only the most experienced pilots, and they are always assigned to the same type of jet. Further training courses are carried out regularly at the company’s five-million-dollar training center at its European headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal.

“Demand is huge. This year we’ll be operating more than 100 jets in Europe for the very first time.” CARSTEN MICHAELIS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR NETJETS EUROPE

On the day of my flight, a NetJets limousine driven by a chauffeur pulls up at my hotel and takes me straight to the “Challenger 350” – a very popular jet that seats up to eight people. On board, I am greeted by flight attendant Rolanda who has been with NetJets for 21 years. After I take my plush seat, she hands me a glass of chilled champagne and some delicious macarons. Meanwhile, Paul, our pilot, who has been flying with NetJets for over 17 years, explains the exact route we will be taking to Nice. Shortly after, we take off like a rocket at a super steep angle. To avoid any bad weather, we continue flying at an altitude of about 13,700 meters.

After a soft landing, we board a waiting helicopter for Monaco. Without wasting precious time with having to change planes like on a commercial flight, we arrive shortly after on the glittering C te d’Azur. Having departed from Basel only two hours earlier, I have saved a lot of time and stress and am able to admire the latest yachts at Europe’s biggest exhibition of private boats, The Monaco Yacht Show. It’s a popular destination: Over the course of the four-day event to which 30,000 visitors are expected, a total of 168 NetJets flights will be landing here.

To encourage sustainability within the industry, NetJets began carbon-neutral operations back in 2012. The company also participates in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme. Recently, NetJets began investing as one of the first aviation companies in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), made from used cooking oil and household waste. SAF generates 80 percent fewer carbon emissions than conventional aircraft fuel. A few weeks later, I am taking an overbooked commercial flight and realize shamefully that this trip has spoiled me: Flying private with NetJets is just so much nicer!

NetJets Announces New Jet Leasing Option

The NetJets 25-Hour Lease is now available to wider audiences.

By Bea Isaacson

netjets for yachts

NetJets have announced that the company is once again welcoming new owners with a new NetJets leasing option purposely constructed for travelers who fly 25 hours or more per year. With a new capacity to sell their services more broadly, the NetJets 25-Hour Lease is now available to wider audiences.

The company, which is a global leader in private aviation, had paused sales to prioritize delivering a premium service to its existing customers. Yet an industry-wide increase in demand, from both individuals and businesses, had prompted NetJets to reconsider, and subsequently focus on hiring aviation specialists while also expanding their fleet.

How does a NetJets lease work?

So what does the NetJets 25-Hour Lease have to offer? In short, a lot. Dependable access to the largest private fleet in the world with guaranteed access for a minimum of 36 months allows individuals to lease a specific NetJets aircraft for 25 hours of annual flying time.

Moreover, with as little as 24 hours’ notice, a whole spectrum of NetJets’ fleet is available to travelers, including the Embraer Phenom 300, Cessna Citation XLS, Cessna Citation Sovereign, or Bombardier Challenger 350.

A multibillion-dollar investment has seen NetJets invest in over 175 new aircraft, of which almost 80 are scheduled to be delivered this year. Continuing to prioritize its commitment to the highest standard of service, NetJets has continued to strengthen the company’s supply chain and infrastructure through hiring over 630 industry-experienced individuals, including a projected 450 new pilots by the end of the year. This will bring NetJets to almost 4,000 pilots worldwide.
