The 11th edition of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua has attracted ten magnificent superyachts, all set to race in the fantastic waters around Antigua. Ideal conditions are forecast for the regatta with blue skies, trade winds and Caribbean swell. As always, the Superyacht Challenge Antigua is designed to be solely for the pleasure of superyacht owners, their guests and crew. The magnificent fleet take part in five days of spectacular racing under the ORC Superyacht Rule. All of the boats and sailors racing at the Superyacht Challenge Antigua come from North America, Europe, Australasia, and the Caribbean Islands. Winners at the Superyacht Challenge Antigua receive barrels of rum, suitably filled. Antigua Yacht Charters

An Antigua luxury yacht charter offers unbelievable natural beauty and historical landmarks that are unrivalled in the Leeward Islands . Designer shops and lavish restaurants can be found within enchanting streetscapes of pastel facades. Once the Caribbean base of the British Navy, Antigua now boasts both a vibrant culture and a huge variety of beaches to offer a relaxing, sun-soaked charter vacation.

Antigua Luxury Yacht Charter An island with a great nautical heritage, Antigua is home to the only Georgian dockyard in the world. Over a hundred Antigua beaches of powder-soft sand, secret coves and turquoise blue waters are set against a backdrop of volcanic hills and surrounding islands. The A-list population of the island enjoy an average yearly temperature of 28°C, which only reduces to 25°C in January. A summer charter is particularly preferable with 8 hours of sunshine a day and the temperature of the Caribbean Sea around 30°C.

Luxury Yacht Charters in Antigua Antigua luxury yacht charters often start at the popular Jolly Harbour Marina before visiting Dickenson Bay and neighbouring island Barbuda, later stopping at Green Island and the world-famous Falmouth Harbour. Antigua offers stunning Baroque architecture, a National Park and some of the Caribbean’s best diving sites but is most famously home to Captain Nelson’s dockyard which provides a truly unforgettable charter experience.

Yacht Charters in Antigua

Named Sunsail’s ‘Destination of the Month’ for November, Antigua is certainly one of the finest Caribbean hot spots to enjoy during the winter. Whilst the weather reaches its peak temperatures in the months between December and April, the charter grounds are typically busier. With this in mind, visiting during the off-season means guests can enjoy some tranquility whilst still indulging in an inviting climate.

Charter Itineraries in Antigua With the Monserrat islands south of Antigua, neighbouring St. Kitts, St. Barts , St. Martin and Barbuda, an Antigua yacht charter offers a wealth of opportunities. The unique character of these islands is what makes Antigua such a popular superyacht destination. Parts of the Leeward Islands, such as St. Barts and the Virgin Islands , are particularly popular charter destinations due to their glamour and vibrant culture.

This year’s edition is a special one, with tributes paid to one of the founders of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Stan Pearson ‘sailed on’ just a few weeks before the regatta was to start. For over 30 years, ‘Stan the Man’ was a massive part of the development of yacht racing in Antigua and around the world. As a founder of the Superyacht Challenge Antigua, Stan would have wanted nothing more than the outstanding regatta to go ahead as planned.

The sailing community is welcomed to a fond farewell to Stan Pearson. Friday 15th March 1800 AST at The Capstans in Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua.

Exploring Antigua: A Superyacht Charter Haven

By Frances Flannagan

Antigua is undeniably one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands with a plethora of activities on offer. Alongside being a popular tourist hotspot as the ultimate relaxation destination, it is also a superyacht charter haven. From taking in the island’s prettiest sights, to taking part in some of Antigua’s most unique experiences, we offer charter guests some of the very best recommendations for exploring arguably the most charming of the Leeward islands. Immerse yourself in all things Antigua, as we take you through what a day on this spectacular island and exquisite luxury location could look like.

It is early on Sunday morning, and you have just docked in Falmouth Harbour Marina. There was a small concern that there would not be a place that would accommodate a yacht of such size, however all worries soon disappear once you discover that Antigua is one of the main ports in the Caribbean, offering a sheltered bay and two large marinas for superyachts, as well as even more marinas for smaller vessels. Falmouth Harbour has been specifically developed with large berths and a deep draft to accommodate mega yachts, so it is the perfect place to dock. It is at this moment that the relaxation begins; all worries have subsided as you step onto the spectacular island that is Antigua.

With 365 beaches on offer, there is no question that you will struggle to find somewhere to relax after your journey. From Dickenson Bay, Antigua’s busiest beach with numerous water-sports activities, to Pigeon Point, with shallow and calm waters for snorkelling and a quiet atmosphere for sunbathing, there are a range of options to accommodate every desire. You cruise East and drop anchor near Long Bay Beach, a fine stretch of white sand and crystal blue waters; the epitome of bliss. After some relaxation, you begin to explore the wonders that Antigua has to offer. Strolling by kiosks and restaurants, absorbing aspects of the welcoming local community, you make your way to Devil’s Bridge, to catch a stunning glimpse of the island’s natural rock formation. Standing on the rugged rocks, watching the waves crash into the East Coast as they have done for thousands of years and resulting in the formation of the natural arch, you very quickly begin to realise that Antigua really is something special. It is not just the hundreds of blissful beaches that it boasts, but so much more.

After staring out into the ocean from the shore, you decide that a snorkelling trip is due. From the East Coast, you cruise to the North to anchor near Sting-Ray City. Here, you embark on another unique aspect of Antigua: a snorkelling trip in which the main ‘event’ is sting-rays. You take the boat to the shallow sting-ray pool and are instantly greeted by the friendly southern ‘rays. Up close with a creature you have before only seen photographs of, this is an experience that you will never forget.

Adrenaline racing after this fantastic excursion, you decide that you would like to follow it with another activity. You’ve explored the sea, and now feel it is worth heading inland. You cruise back down the island and anchor down South, only a short drive from Fig Tree Drive Rainforest where you can explore the jungle by zipline. A great thrill as well as the opportunity to explore a new aspect of the island, this tour is unlike anything you have done before. Flying high amongst the canopy, immersing yourself in the flora and fauna, you feel as though you really have experienced all of the elements that Antigua has to offer.

After strolling along Nelson’s Dockyard, another possible location for docking your superyacht, you make your way up to Shirley Heights. A picture perfect view overlooking both English and Falmouth Harbours, and the beautiful blue Antiguan waters, offering a glorious place to spend sunset on a Sunday for two reasons: the lookout point, and the party. From late afternoon to night-time every Sunday, an unforgettable night unfolds with local bands, barbecues and drinks until the sun goes down. Alongside the stunning view, and the mixture of locals and tourists drawing the week to a close in the same spectacular way, this is an evening to be remembered for years to come.

As the night draws to a close, the music becomes softer, and the people begin to disperse, your day's experiences begin to unfold in front of you. You are sure you have explored every aspect of this charming island and become immersed in everything it has to offer. From cruising to beautiful beaches and relaxing on the shore, to taking in the thrilling activities and bustling atmospheres, it is clear that Antigua is a uniquel and stunning place to visit: an undeniable superyacht charter haven.

Plus-size fashion show in Antigua

Published on March 17th, 2024 by Editor -->

Only seven teams competed in the 2024 Superyacht Challenge Antigua on March 13-17, but this plus-size fashion show of elegant performers enjoyed 13-20 knot tradewinds for racing around deep water and inshore marks, making full use of Antigua’s ocean swell and stunning coastal vistas.

While superyachts race to win their class, there is no mathematical overall winner. Each competing yachts in one of the three classes, and the race committee, cast one vote for the yacht that has competed in the Spirit of the Regatta, both afloat and ashore. The winner lifts The Gosnell Trophy.

For the 2024 edition, the Gosnell Trophy was presented by Arthur and Page Gosnell. Voting was unanimous, the winner was the 182ft (55.5m) Dykstra schooner Adela skippered by Greg Perkins.

“We bought Adela in 2020 and we have not been able to race her due to COVID, so Adela has been out for four years.” commented Adela’s owner. “This is the first time I have been in this environment and it has been fantastic. The spirit of the team, their passion, the history, and the philosophy of Adela is wonderful.

antigua superyachts

“This has presented my kids with the opportunity to be here, surrounded by beautiful people that work as a team that looks for the same goal; everyone protects each other. I am very proud to have the chance to be with Adela. I hope to be back many times in the future.”

Event information – Results – Photos

Privateers Class The 218ft (66.45m) Dykstra/Reichel Pugh ketch Hetairos skippered by Graham Newton, was a spectacular sight at the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Capable of hoisting over 6000 sq.m. of sail area, Hetairos can sail as fast as the wind at just about every point of sail. Hetairos started her campaign winning the stand-alone Round Antigua Race and went on to win all four races of the series in her class. Adela was runner up.

Ashore, the Hetairos team enjoyed all of the parties; At the Famous Cook-Off, Hetairos won the Best meal according to theme Pirates of the Caribbean and a special mention as in true camaraderie spirit they lent their flint to the Zig Zag crew to light their coal pot. Hetairos skipper Graham Newton also picked up the prize for the loudest Caribbean men’s shirt at The Caribbean Night!

“This is Hetairos’ owners favorite regatta and he has been coming to the Antigua since 1972,” commented Hetairos skipper Graham Newton. “The venue and the history of Nelson’s Dockyard plus the atmosphere of the regatta because it is so laid back with a great Caribbean vibe. On top of that is the racing! The courses and the conditions are challenging, which is what all of the Hetairos team loves.”

Corsair Class Two battling Swan 90s had a fanatic duel throughout the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Hummingbird, skippered by Josh Hill, and Don Macpherson’s Freya enjoyed intense racing throughout. As well as close racing with the 110ft (33.5m) Malcolm McKeon sloop Zemi skippered by Hjalmar Winbladh. Don Macpherson’s 90ft (27m) Swan Freya, competing in their fourth regatta, showed impressive boat handling and determination to win the Corsair Class. Freya won every race but it was far from easy, with pressure throughout the four-race series.

“Great racing and good fun,” commented Freya skipper Joph Carter. “The owner is happy and we sailed the boat clean and the event was so good! Antigua is Freya’s base, our spiritual home. We have raced this regatta for years without winning our class, so it’s nice to get the monkey off our back. This is not a commercial event, but we have a good crew of sailors and it really is a memorable one to win.”

Swam 90 Hummingbird showed great pace to take runner-up in the Round Antigua Race and during the regatta, Hummingbird was the best starter for the entire fleet, averaging just 4 seconds short of the line. The Hummingbird team were taking part in their first regatta and like Freya and Zemi, joined in all of the shoreside festivities.

Buccaneer Class John McMonigall’s Oyster 82 Zig Zag, skippered by Carl Raynes, was competing in their eight regatta in a row, and are two-time winners the Gosnell Trophy. Competing this year against the 108ft (33m) Hoek designed sloop Namuun, skippered by Tom Aiken, although the two boats are very different, the boat-to-boat on the water was very close. The Zig Zag crew was the youngest team in the regatta, as well the only crew with as many women as men sailors aboard. Zig Zag completed a faultless score line for the Superyacht Challenge Antigua. Namuun was runner up.

Sadly, Zig Zag owner John McMonigall was not on board but he really wanted to be here,” commented Zig Zag skipper Carl Raynes. “We have tried to do the regatta as if John was here, and we have had video calls with John all the time, keeping up the Spirit of Zig Zag.”

Ashore Zig Zag take their partying to another level! Winning at the Cook-Off for best dressed crew according to theme Pirates of Caribbean, and best lighting of the coal pot. Zig Zag was also the best dressed team for the Caribbean Night!

Superyacht Challenge Antigua co-founder Stan Pearson was present in spirit throughout the regatta. Stan sadly passed away just a few weeks before the start. After his burial at sea flanked by superyachts, a memorial was held in Nelson’s Dockyard with hundreds of the sailing community in attendance.

Stan will always be remembered for his tremendous work, love and enthusiasm for sailing. A deep-water mark ‘Stan’ has been named in his memory. Three cheers were given Stan at the prizegiving and the whole of Nelson’s Dockyard heard it.

The biggest yachts to look out for at the 2024 St Barths Bucket

St Barths is the epicentre of superyacht racing during the Caribbean season, often with an impressive array of superyacht spectators in tow . In the final days leading up to the 2024 St Barths Bucket (21-24 March), BOAT rounds up the largest yachts seen pulling into Gustavia for the famed regatta, beginning with Lürssen's 138-metre Rising Sun ...

Builder: Lürssen Length: 138.01m

If not for her sheer size, Rising Sun will be easy to spot from the shores of Gustavia thanks to her distinct glass panels running across the two upper decks. The yacht was the last ever design of Jon Bannenberg and boasts 8,000 square metres of living space that includes a wine cellar, double-height cinema and a basketball court. Rising Sun was originally commissioned by American business magnate Larry Ellison , who later sold the yacht to media mogul David Geffen.

Builder: Kleven Length: 116.15m

One of the largest explorer yachts in the world , Multiverse (ex Ulysses ) was commissioned by New Zealand's richest man, Graeme Hart. She is equipped with a heli-hangar on the top deck for a Bell 429 helicopter, as well as a large swimming pool, cinema and spa for the ultimate guest experience. Inside, the yacht's massive 18-metre beam provides accommodation for an owner's party of up to 66.

Maltese Falcon

Builder: Perini Navi Length: 88m

Fresh out of a full-scale refit, Maltese Falcon is undoubtedly one of the most unique and technologically innovative sailing superyachts in the world – kitted out with radical unstayed masts made of "weapons-grade" carbon fibre, a FalconRig and computerised sail and mast control system. Be sure to look out for the yacht's eponymous emblem on its middle sail, which also appears in the form of a bronze sculpture next to the indoor cinema.

Builder: Admiral – The Italian Sea Group Length: 74.85m

Instantly recognisable, Kenshō' 's flowing lines and metallic green-blue hull took six years to create with design from Dutch firm Azure Yacht Design and Naval Architecture and Berlin-based archineers.berlin . The Admiral flagship was awarded the coveted Motor Yacht of the Year title at the 2023 BOAT International World Superyacht Awards and picked up another Neptune at the 2023 BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards for Best Interior Design. Onboard highlights include a glass-fronted spa pool on the sundeck, a sunbed shaped in the image of a manta ray and a diesel-electric system based on five variable-speed generators that earned the yacht its Eco classification.

Builder: Heesen Yachts Length: 65m

The multiple award-winning Illusion (ex Galactica Star ) was delivered by Heesen in 2013, featuring the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF) developed by Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen & Associates . Her streamlined appearance and generous guest amenities have made her a favourite on the charter scene, with Beyoncé and Jay Z among her list of returning clients . Illusion was also singled out by Dickie Bannenberg – who designed the yacht's interior – as one of his most memorable projects owing to its considerable onboard art collection.

Builder: Benetti Length: 60m

Another popular charter vessel, St David will once again appear on the hit reality TV show Below Deck , but this time with a new captain at the helm. The yacht is characterised by a classic Baroque theme with intricate marquetry made from satin woods, and a mosaic floor on the skylounge that draws inspiration from a "Tuscan palazzo". While St David is known to frequent high-profile events such as the Cannes Film Festival, she has also ventured to off-the-beaten-path locations including the Seychelles, Red Sea and Abu Dhabi.

Builder: Trinity Yachts Length: 58.83m

Launched in 2016, Imagine... is one of the largest yachts to be built in the United States . The tri-deck vessel was penned by long-time collaborator Geoff Van Aller , with both the hull and superstructure built from aluminium to AB classification. The yacht's primary social area is found on the sundeck, where guests can relax in the Jacuzzi, on multiple sun loungers or at the bar. Inside, Imagine... also has a bonus cabin that doubles as a massage room.

Builder: Feadship Length: 55.5m

This Feadship superyacht has sailed under a litany of names since her 2005 delivery, including Twizzile , Drizzle , Issana , Madsummer , Cynthia and most recently, Mary A . In 2018, her owner joined forces with American interior designer Claudette Bonville Associates to give Mary A an exhaustive makeover that included a top-to-bottom paint job, technical tweaks and a brand-new interior – all while carefully preserving the yacht's pedigree.

Builder: Benetti Length: 52m

Lady B (ex Latitude ) appears to be making the most of the winter cruising season, with back-and-forth trips between the British Virgin Islands and St Barths since early December 2023 according to BOATPro 's Global Fleet Tracker. Before that, the yacht spent the off-season touring fan-favourite destinations in the South Pacific, such as Fiji, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia. She is consistently ranked among the most popular charter vessels with amenities such as an outdoor cinema, a Jacuzzi and a recently updated dive centre.
