N'Fun 30: A transportable sailboat with a radical look

nf 30 sailboat

Polish shipyard N'Fun Yachting has launched a transportable 30-foot sailboat that can be used for both sports and coastal cruising. Discover it in pictures.

Briag Merlet

A compact, transportable sailboat

N'Fun Yachting has been building the N'Fun 30 in Poland since 2018. This sailboat , designed by architect Marek Stanczyk, has measured dimensions, with a beam of 2.92 m and an overall length of 9 meters. Although not roadworthy, it can nevertheless be moved easily, as its bulb keel can be raised vertically.

nf 30 sailboat

The headsail furler is mounted on a tilting balcony system, which also serves as a goat for lifting the mast, for rapid mast removal and to allow the mast to be lowered to pass under bridges in inland waterways.

Balcon basculant

With all these features, the N'Fun 30 is ready to take on the challenge of discovering new cruising grounds.

Quick navigation program

With its sandwich construction, the N'Fun 30 has a reasonable displacement, between 2.1 and 2.6 tons depending on the version. The version we visited, with performance sails, is designed for a sporty program, for which the bowsprit and 100 m2 asymmetric spinnaker provide a good base. The boat can also be used for lake cruising or coastal cruising.

Un vrai piano

Sober interior and angular design

Stylistic expectations differ from one yachtsman to another. The look of the N'Fun Yacht is perhaps a little stiff and angular, especially in the cockpit. Our version features a large steering wheel, imposing for the size of the boat , in front of which the mainsail track runs. The narrow forward section, close to the winch, is ideal for securing crew or passengers.

nf 30 sailboat

The rather wide side decks give access to the foredeck, equipped with an anchor locker and tilting balcony.

nf 30 sailboat

Inside, the vertical keel lift is a little cumbersome, taking pride of place in the middle of the saloon table. There are two bench seats on each side.

nf 30 sailboat

While a coffin berth accommodates a crew member on the port side, a bathroom is available on the aft starboard side. Forward of the mast sponge, the well-equipped galley is located on either side, with sink, hob and storage space.

nf 30 sailboat

A small forepeak, under the retractable bowsprit, will welcome a loving couple.

While a few details may be lacking, the quality of the finish remains acceptable.

The 2023 price list for the N'Fun 30 started at ?73,000 ex-VAT. The version visited, well optioned, exceeded ?180,000 before tax.

We are proud to present the N’Fun 30 Yacht - daysailer, weekender or performance cruiser

N’Fun 30 Daysailer Yachts are carefully hand laminated and built using only the highest quality components and materials. The design and layout is the result of many years of success in regattas by Marek Stanczyk – repeatedly national champion of Poland in a variety of boat classes and a winner of World Cup regattas in match racing. The N’Fun 30 sailboat is very adaptable in its use for day sailing, weekending, regattas, club racing and sailing schools. Our designer, Eugeniusz Ginter, created the N’Fun 30 from these 4 principles:

  • Easy and fast sailing
  • Comfortable sleeping space
  • Flexibility in shallow waters
  • Maximum cockpit space

Thanks to a lifting keel with a 550kg bulb and low total weight the N’Fun 30 is very stable and easy to handle. Sailing the N’fun 30 is much easier than a typical 30 foot boat. At the same time the cabin is comfortable for a small crew to sleep in for a few days. The lifting keel has several advantages. It gives access to shallow bays, marinas and mooring fields with low and tidal water situations, as well as making transport much easier. The prioritization of the outdoor space resulted in a cockpit larger than on some 40 foot yachts.

Catalina 30/309

Designed around 1974, the traditionally styled Catalina 30 remains extremely popular with cruisers, due to its wide and deep hull creating exceptional volume above and below decks and for its stability under sail. It was offered in standard and tall rig configurations, each with a bowsprit option. Shoal, wing and deep fin keels were offered for varying performance. It offers more space than a typical 34′ boat. There are seven full adult berths, 6′ 4″ headroom and large storage areas under the settees, v-berth, q-berth and in the three cockpit lockers.

There is a large anchor locker in the forepeak. With a huge companionway hatch and large forward hatch, the boat is well ventilated and bright inside. Over the years, many changes were made to fabrics, decorative materials, trim, colors and fashion, and the boat has remained remarkably appealing. The hull Catalina 30 deckhouse, windows and sheer line still define the entire Catalina family of boats.

Heeled in Blue

The original or Mark I model was built from 1975 to 1986 and features the straight cockpit designed for tiller steering and end-boom main sheeting. This model has been widely modified and updated by the owners and improved by the factory with a skeg, a balanced rudder, mid-boom (cabin-top) main sheeting. and pedestal/ wheel steering. It typically had wire-rope external halyards lead to mast winches. The early Yanmar, Universal 5411 and Atomic-4 engines were phased out in favor of the 3-cylinder Universal M-25 diesels during the middle 80s. Design deficiencies with the chain plates (bulkheads) and rudder were eliminated in the late 1970’s production models. Upgrade kits for most of these changes are available from the factory.

The updated Mark II was built from Sept 1986 until 1993 and featured a T-shaped cockpit mold with wide flat coamings and oriented totally to pedestal steering. Halyards were moved inside the mast and lead back to the cockpit. The M-25 became the only engine option in Oct 1988. During this production period, the original SeaWard blocks and Nicro mainsheet gear were replaced by Garhauer equipment. The curved traveler was flattened using more Garhauer equipment. More optional equipment became standard and more opening ports were added, included in the midship hull. The new wing keel option was introduced in Nov 1986. It became standard on the newer Mark III.

nf 30 sailboat

The Mark III was introduced in 1994. The broader Mark III stern has a walk-thru transom with boarding/swim platform which takes advantage of the original split backstay. The cockpit is now even more comfortable than ever with wider coamings for outboard seating and new observation seats built into the stern rail. Low maintenance materials have been used extensively to give you more time to enjoy your C-30. New stainless steel traveler supports improve visibility and reduce friction on halyards. The galley has been made even larger with new custom countertop surfaces, more cupboards and drawers, and a dish and cup storage rack. The varnished interior teak cabin surfaces are accented by polished brass light fixtures. Natural light has been increased through the addition of 3 fixed ports in the hull.

Catalina MARK III shares the under body and rig of earlier Catalina 30’s and is eligible to participate in Catalina 30 One Design events and Class Association activities. Mechanical and electrical components remain essentially the same throughout the entire production run. An electrical cable upgrade (cockpit to engine) eliminates some low voltage and charging problems in all three models. Universal, PAR, Seaward (Hillerange), EDSON, and LEWMAR brands are used almost exclusively. Hood and Scheafer furling gear has been standard. Since 1990, Garhauer Marine, has supplied all of the topside rigging and running gear.

Now out of production, last produced at about a dozen per year, the venerable C30 is now the oldest model in the Catalina Yachts family, having the longest production life of over 25 years and nearly 6500 hulls. (A redesigned C22 has been produced since 1995). A MARK IV change was planned in 1997, but was developed as an entirely new boat, the C310 which appeared at the Atlantic City Sail Expo in Feb 1999. The Catalina 30 was inducted into the Sail America Hall of Fame in 2001.

The last Catalina 30 was #6454 5/15/08 – Sold to Catalina Yacht Anchorage out of Channel Islands. Catalina introduced the C309 as the follow-on design for the C30 marketing concept.

During its long production run, the C30 was built in four rigging configurations and three major models or styles. There are three types of keels; the original 5′ 3″ deep keel is still preferred for all-around performance where water depth is no problem. The early 4′ 5″ shoal keel has been replaced by the modern 3′ 10″ deep wing keel. According to the factory, all hulls share the same dimensions and overall weight.

The rigging configurations are the original standard rig (STD), the standard with a bowsprit, a tall rig and the tall mast rig with a bowsprit (TRBS). The bowsprits add about 32 inches to the “J” measurement of the sail plan and the tall mast adds 24 inches to the “I” of the sail plan. The tall mast also has a boom or “E” measurement that is 6 inches longer. The standard boat without the bowsprit is popular along the Pacific coast while the predominant tall rig with bowsprit is the choice in every other sailing area.

The Catalina 30 is widely raced in several large west coast one-design fleets. Otherwise it is a favorite club racer/cruiser in PHRF fleets across the country. The C30 one-design class rules closely follow the PHRF guidelines to lower the costs of competition.

Catalina 30 - Downwind

The PHRF ratings split between the standard (STD) and tall rig (TRBS) is usually 18-24 seconds per mile. This wide difference is not supported by most C30 sailors (who know better) and the national one-design rules keep them in separate racing classes. The boat is an excellent performer in flatter water and ocean swells. The sail plan is powerful but the broad hull entry doesn’t slice through choppy or tossed seas as well as some of its contemporaries. The masthead genoas are large, and the main has a moderately tall aspect. That popular 1970’s design theme calls for a spinnaker for off-wind sailing.

10 New Cruising Sailboats Under 35 Feet

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: November 3, 2020

It wasn’t so long ago that 30- to 35-foot cruising sailboats were likely to be the largest yachts found in many a harbor. And while 40-something and even 50-something footers are all the rage at boat shows today, there’s a lot to be said for setting sail on a boat big enough to carry family and friends, but still small enough to be easily maintained and handled alone from time to time. Small cruising sailboats are simple to dock or tie up to a mooring, and finding long-term marina space is easier as well.

Choosing a cruising sailboat, no matter the size, is a big decision. And it helps to have a trusted list of boats to get started. Here, then, is a look at 10 of the best daysailers , weekenders and coastal cruising sailboats under 35 feet that are all in production and can be purchased new.

Alerion Sport 30

A quarter-century ago, Garry Hoyt launched what would come to be known as the daysailer genre with the introduction of the Alerion Express 28, a boat designed by the late Carl Schumacher that featured a minimal interior and a large cockpit where an owner and guests could enjoy the simple joy of sailing. Traditional and lovely looking—but with a quite modern underbody and a powerful sail plan—Hoyt, ever the marketer, proclaimed the boat to be “the prettiest girl at the dance.”

Since then, a number of siblings ranging from 20 to 41 feet have been added to the Alerion family, including the Alerion Sport 30, which retains the graceful sheer line, oval ports and stylish overhangs of the original Schumacher design. Yet with input from naval architect Langan Design Partners, it also embraces a solid measure of performance-oriented DNA.

Bavaria Cruiser 34

In every Boat of the Year contest, it seems, a boat rises up after sea trials to make a lasting impression on the judges. For 2018, that boat was the Bavaria Cruiser 34.

Says Boat of the Year Judge Tim Murphy, “The Bavaria was a lovely boat to sail. It has a single rudder, and she answered her helm just beautifully in the conditions we had today. We started off with around 10 knots of breeze that built to 13 to 15 knots. As a sailboat, it was just a pleasurable sailing experience, among the best we had during our judging. It was among the boats that felt like a really happy sailing experience.

Beneteau Oceanis 30.1

Sailed as part of the 2020 Boat of the Year sea trials, the 31-foot-3-inch Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 was the compact yacht best-equipped and spec’d out as a dedicated cruising boat, and not coincidentally, it was also awarded the title of Best Performance Cruiser for 2020. But don’t let her cozy interior accommodations fool you; this is also one peppy little vessel.

The 2017 Boat of the Year (BOTY) contest featured a stellar crop of crossover cruiser/racers; however, when all the testing was said and done, our independent panel of judges was sold on the Dehler 34, naming it the year’s Best Performance Cruiser. Designed by the highly regarded Judel/Vrolijk naval-architecture consortium, whose reputation was fostered by longtime success in international yacht-racing circles, the 34-footer combined contemporary good looks and a sweet turn of speed with better-than-average comfort and accommodations below. It didn’t hurt that the boat, nicely equipped at $215,000, was the least-expensive entry in the entire 2017 fleet. All in all, it proved to be a winning formula.

Dufour Grand Large 360

Dufour Yachts introduced its new 360 Grand Large model to CW’s Boat of the Year team in 2018 as a coastal cruiser intended for a couple or perhaps a small family. With that in mind, judge Alvah Simon found numerous clever elements to praise within the boat’s 35-foot-2-inch hull—a relatively modest LOA compared to the many 40-, 50- and 60-footers on display at the U.S. Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland.

After a roughly 10-year hiatus from the U.S. marketplace, the Slovenian builder Elan is back in a big way. For the 2017 Boat of the Year contest, the company launched a pair of new boats in the States, including the Elan E4, a 34-foot-9-inch performance cruiser with an emphasis on performing, designed by renowned British naval architect Rob Humphreys. The brand has been in business for seven decades and lately is perhaps even better known in America for its skis. Not surprisingly, given its complementary product lines—lots of sailors are fine skiers—its boats are as sleek and sporty as its boards.

Grand Soleil 34

Way back in the 1970s, when the well-known Italian boatyard Grand Soleil was just getting started, its first model was a Finot-designed 34-footer. With over 300 units sold, it was an instant success, and launched the company on an upward trajectory that spanned the intervening decades, mostly with an ongoing series of much larger, more complex racer/cruisers. For 2020, the builder decided to return to its roots with a completely revamped Grand Soleil 34, and it’s a terrific boat.

Value. How does one determine it? Price is most certainly a factor. In the case of new boats, and our Boat of the Year competition, it means something more. As sailors, we wish to recognize good boats that not only are affordable but offer other, tangible rewards. The ability to get couples and families out on the water, to have a weekend escape, to take them on coastal vacations and even maybe a sabbatical to the islands, all without breaking the bank. For 2019, the judging panel determined that one boat had the potential to do these things better than the rest, which is why they awarded the Best Value prize to the Hanse 348.

With a price tag under $200,000, during sea trials the Hanse 348 wowed the judging team from the get-go. “In only about 8 knots of breeze, we were seeing 5.7 knots upwind and pointing very nicely, and even registered 6.5 knots once we cracked off,” said Tim Murphy. “It’s a pretty sweet little boat.”

Italia 9.98

Of the performance cruisers that made their North American debut in 2020, in terms of sheer appearance, the futuristic 34-foot Italia 9.98 was easily the most distinctive. There are actually two versions of the boat: the 34 Club—which is the cruising alternative, the primary features of which are its twin wheels—and the 34 Fuoriserie—the racing model, and the one we tested, with its tiller steering being the identifying characteristic.

Beginning with the popular little J/24 way back in 1977, J/Boats has become famous for its steady introduction of terrific racing and cruising boats, almost all of which shared one main characteristic: They sailed like a witch. More than four decades later, having built more than 50 separate, mind-boggling models, the Johnstone family that designs, markets and sells the brand shows no signs of slowing down. Their latest offering, for 2020, was another fast and fun racer/cruiser: the 32-foot-7-inch J/99.

US 30 is a 29 ′ 11 ″ / 9.1 m monohull sailboat designed by Douglas Peterson/Daryl Watson and built by Bayliner (Buccaneer/US Yachts) between 1979 and 1983.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The hull for both the BUCCANEER 295 and US 30 are, in part, based on an earlier Peterson 1/2 ton design though Peterson had no role in the production of any of these subsequent boats nor were royalties paid. (The sailboat division of Bayliner took the practice of reusing the tooling from defunct builders to a whole new level.) The US 30 has a different deck than the BUCCANEER. Recycled once again for a short time by Pearson Yachts as the TRITON 30. Shoal draft version: 3.92’/1.19m.

Father buries 6-year-old child at sea after a migrant boat went adrift for days, Cyprus police say

NICOSIA, Cyprus — Cyprus police say a Syrian man admitted to burying one of his four children at sea after the 6-year-old died aboard a boat loaded with migrants that had gone adrift for many days without food or water.

Police spokesman Christos Andreou told the state-run Cyprus News Agency Monday that the Syrian man told them under questioning that the boat had departed from Syria on Feb. 20 but at some point ran out of fuel, sailing adrift in rough seas.

The man said he buried his child after wrapping him in a blanket two days before Cyprus marine police radar spotted the vessel on Feb. 29 some 67 miles (about 108 kilometers) south of the island nation. A patrol vessel transferred at least 31 migrants to the southern coastal town of Larnaca.

The Cypriot officers noticed a discrepancy in the number of children declared on the Syrian man’s documents and those left on board.

Petros Zenios, deputy operations chief with the Cyprus migration service, told state broadcaster CyBC that three other migrants tried to swim for help after noticing what appeared to be city lights on the horizon. He said there was no way that would’ve been Cyprus because of the boat’s distance from shore. The three remain missing despite an extensive search.

Zenios said two other migrants are being treated in a hospital, one in critical condition after apparently consuming seawater. The other is suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

There were 11 other minors aboard the boat, all in good health.

A Cyprus court ordered the 22-year-old boat captain to remain in police custody for eight days. He faces charges including manslaughter and causing death through negligence.

Zenios said 1,158 minors arrived in Cyprus aboard migrant-laden boats all of last year. Some 316 minors reached the island by sea so far this year.

Meanwhile, Cypriot Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou told other European Union counterparts in Brussels Monday that the 27-member bloc should re-examine parts of Syria to facilitate repatriations of migrants.

Officials from Greece, Sweden and Austria agreed that the EU needs to re-evaluate the issue, according to a statement issued Monday.
