Based year-round in Phuket, Thailand, classic motor yacht NORTHERN SUN offers the ideal platform for adventurous charters in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. Originally launched in 1976 as an ice-class research vessel, NORTHERN SUN has been thoroughly modernised and updated with an extensive rebuild completed in 2007. The yacht you see today, while providing contemporary comforts, still embraces her past, and her handsome exterior and characterful interiors blend new and old seamlessly. From her classic blue hull and original windlasses to her antique rugs and ship models, exotic artefacts and fine artwork, NORTHERN SUN exudes a sort of sentimental charm.

Onboard, guests can choose to entertain or relax in one of three interior lounges or opt for the al fresco lifestyle as you kick-back in the sun deck Jacuzzi, dine under the stars on her aft deck or sip sundowners in the foredeck chill out zone. As night falls, retire to one of her 6 luxurious suites, including an elegant full beam master stateroom with king size bed, private library and office, and an ensuite with Jaccuzzi bath. 50m motor yacht Northern Sun is a long-range displacement expedition vessel, previously known as the Japanese ice-class marine research vessel Hokko Maru, launched in 1976 by the Japanese shipyard Narasaki Shipbuilding. From 2005 to 2008, the Northern Sun superyacht underwent a complete conversion in the Philippines, Singapore as well as Thailand and is available for luxury yacht charters in Southeast Asia. She was refitted in 2022.

Luxury motor yacht NORTHERN SUN has a warm welcoming interior, featuring sumptuous woods, hand-woven rugs throughout and contemporary bespoke soft furnishings. The salon is on the main deck surrounded by panoramic windows, allowing for stunning views and ample natural light. Guest may enjoy relaxing in 3 well-appointed spaces, from the games area forward to the lounge centered, to a further lounge aft. On the lower deck, a generous formal dining area seats guests in style. Forward of the dining area is the full beam master suite and one twin cabin, while aft and below decks are a further 4, bright and airy guest cabins.

Charter yacht NORTHERN SUN offers plenty of exterior living on 3 decks. The main deck has direct access to the salon and boasts a massive partially shaded aft area, ideal for relaxing or entertaining, alfresco dining option, followed by central access steps to the extended swim platform and a fabulous assortment of water toys. Forward, a spacious seating area is perfect for evening aperitifs. An upper deck wraps around 360° and features the pilot house and navigation area. The sundeck is spacious and perfect for a casual afternoon or romantic evening, complete with seating, tables, service area and deluxe Spa Pool tub. Run by twin Yanmar 6G-UT diesel engines, the 50m superyacht Northern Sun (ex Hokko Maru) reaches a maximum speed of 13 knots and a cruising speed of 10.5 knots. The all-steel Northern Sun boasts a beam of 9m (29´53´´) and a maximum draught of 5m (16´40´´).

Northern Sun’s interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 6 rooms, including a master suite, 3 double cabins and 2 twin cabins. She is also capable of carrying up to 11 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Timeless styling, beautiful furnishings and sumptuous seating feature throughout to create an elegant and comfortable atmosphere.

Her leisure and entertainment facilities make her perfect for entertaining friends and family on your charter vacation. There’s ample space for enjoying alfresco lunches, delicious dinner on deck, or simply lounging in the sunshine and topping up your tan.

She is built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, has a cruising speed of 10 knots, a maximum speed of 12.5 knots and a range of 10,000nm from 175,000litre fuel tanks. Her combination of performance and style is what makes her an appealing proposition.

This impressive yacht comes complete with a modern stabilization system to reduce roll motion even during rough seas, and the yacht also has ‘at anchor stabilizers’ to keep things smooth even at anchor/zero speed.

A deck Jacuzzi is just perfect for relaxing with friends and family, while taking in the breath-taking views after a long day of exploration.

Delivered in 1976 under the name Hokko Maru (“Northern Light”), Northern Sun has lived a full and fascinating life. At 50.8 metres, she was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. The transformation from ship to superyacht came in 2006 when she underwent a two-year refit, courtesy of her new owners.

Northern Sun has the hardy constitution of an explorer, marking a departure from the first season’s white boat Keri Lee III . 

When her current owners undertook renovations, they were intent to elevate her to superyacht standards while still maintaining her distinctive look. Her old windlasses are still visible on the forward deck, the master cabin has retained its original camber and even the engine room looks exactly as it did when she was a research ship. "Looks" being the operative word, of course – she’s had several system upgrades since the 70s.

Interiors include natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). This dark wood furniture and wall panelling give Northern Sun her warm, traditional feel, while the cabins themselves are dotted with the owners’ collection of travel paraphernalia. It makes for an eclectic living space, with indoor sofa seating accented by authentic Persian rugs and the formal dining room and master suite fixed with guild-frame, 19th century oil paintings. Keep an eye out for one of the owners’ most coveted pieces, a 100-year-old ship’s clock which still rings out the two-hour, maritime work shift also known as "the dog watch".

Northern Sun’s main deck is dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation.

The superyacht naturally has impressive stowing capacity, with space for scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide. There are also two Laser sailboats, enabling nimbler exploration along Australia’s shallow bays and coral reefs.

The owners spent ten years cruising through Southeast Asia after Northern Sun was refitted. Using the superyacht as a base for adventures, they've scuba-dived in the Andaman Sea, kayaked in the mangrove swamps of Phang Nga Bay and explored some of Indonesia’s most remote fishing islands. In 2015, they decided to put Northern Sun on the charter market, where she quickly became one of the most popular yachts available in Thailand. The167-foot (51m) NORTHERN SUN is a long-range displacement expedition vessel, previously known as the Japanese ice-class marine research vessel HOKKO MARU, launched in 1976 by the Japanese shipyard Narasaki Shipbuilding.

New modification of Russian VVER-440 fuel loaded at Paks NPP in Hungary

DECEMBER 14, 2020 — After the recent refueling at power unit 3 of the Hungarian Paks NPP, its VVER-440 reactor has been loaded with a batch of fresh fuel including 18 fuel bundles of the new modification. The new fuel will be introduced at all four operating power units of the Paks NPP, and the amount of new-modification bundles in each refueling will be increased gradually.

Development of the new VVER-440 fuel modification was completed in 2020 under the contract between TVEL JSC and MVM Paks NPP Ltd. Its introduction would optimize the hydro-uranium ratio in the reactor core, enabling to increase the efficiency of fuel usage and advance the economic performance of the power plant operation. All VVER-440 fuel modifications are manufactured at the Elemash Machine-Building Plant, a facility of TVEL Fuel Company in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

“Introduction of a new fuel is an option to improve technical and economic performance of a nuclear power plant without substantial investment. We are actively engaged in development of new models and modifications of VVER-440 fuel for power plants in Europe. The projects of the new fuels for Loviisa NPP in Finland, Dukovany NPP in the Czech Republic, Mochovce and Bohunice NPPs in Slovakia, are currently at various stages of implementation. Despite the same reactor model, these projects are quite different technically and conceptually, since we take into account the individual needs and requirements of our customers,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

The project of development and validation of the new fuel has been accomplished with participation of a number of Russian nuclear industry enterprises, such as OKB Gidropress (a part of Rosatom machine-building division Atomenergomash), Bochvar Institute (material science research facility of TVEL Fuel Company), Elemash Machine-building plant and Kurchatov Institute national research center. At the site of OKB Gidropress research and experiment facility, the new fuel passed a range of hydraulic, longevity and vibration tests.

Paks NPP is the only functioning nuclear power plant in Hungary with total installed capacity 2000 MWe. It operates four similar units powered by VVER-440 reactors and commissioned one by one in 1982-1987. Currently, Paks NPP is the only VVER-440 plant in the world operating in extended 15-monthes fuel cycle. The power plant produces about 15 bln kWh annually, about a half of electric power generation in Hungary. In 2018, the project of increasing the duration of Paks NPP fuel cycle won the European competition Quality Innovation Award in the nomination “Innovations of large enterprises”. Russian engineers from TVEL JSC, Kurchatov Institute, OKB Gidropress, Bochvar Institute and Elemash Machine-building plant provided assistance to the Hungarian colleagues in accomplishment of the project.

  TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom incorporates enterprises for the fabrication of nuclear fuel, conversion and enrichment of uranium, production of gas centrifuges, as well as research and design organizations. It is the only supplier of nuclear fuel for Russian nuclear power plants. TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom provides nuclear fuel for 73 power reactors in 13 countries worldwide, research reactors in eight countries, as well as transport reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet.
