Porsche-Designed Superyacht, Royal Falcon One, Hits the Market

A Porsche-crafted superyacht has hit the market with the look of something out of this world.

That was the intention when Singapore-based firm Royal Falcon Fleet approached Studio F.A. Porsche—a subsidiary of the iconic sports car maker—to help make “a spaceship on the water,” according to the Austria-based design agency.

The 135-foot yacht was officially listed earlier this month, with a price on application, according to the brokers, Camper & Nicholsons.

The modern interiors feature soft, curving edges and a palette of white, black and blue.

The superyacht, known as Royal Falcon One, features a catamaran design, a style whereby two parallel hulls act like legs, lifting the whole ship off the water. Royal Falcon Fleet CEO and president M A Zaman has said the unorthodox shape is meant to differentiate the yacht from its peers.

“In St. Tropez or Fort Lauderdale, you see 20 or 30 or 40 megayachts standing there pretty much looking the same,” Mr. Zaman said from London’s Superyacht Design Week in 2014. “Unless you look at the name of the boat you don’t see the difference.”

The catamaran design is also functional by allowing the bedroom suites a more luxurious position at or above the main deck rather than below, the way standard monohull yachts are often arranged, he told SuperyachtNews.

True to Mr. Zaman’s word, Royal Falcon houses three guest cabins on the main deck, while the master suite and a so-called “VIP suite” on the upper deck, giving them loftier views over the water, according to the listing with Camper & Nicholsons. Instead, the two hulls are used to house cabins for the ship’s 10-person crew.

A roof deck with a Jacuzzi and seating

Built in Sweden, the fuel-efficient superyacht has a cruising speed of 15 knots and can top out at about 35 knots, according to the listing agents.

From Penta:   Track-Only Supercars: The Top Rung in Exclusivity

Inside, Studio F.A. Porsche imbued the lavish interiors with a bit of space-age modernism, including freeform leather sofas, a clean color palette of whites, grays and blacks and automatic sliding glass doors. The designers employed smooth lines and curved, organic edges recognizable in Porsche’s iconic automobiles, images show.

Royal Falcon One also houses a range of luxurious amenities, including a top deck with a Jacuzzi; a main saloon with a back-lit bar and panoramic observation deck; as well as a private open-air deck off the master suite, according to the listing.

Boat of the Week: This 135-Foot Explorer Yacht Has One of the Largest Flybridges in Its Class

Even a conventional-looking yacht can yield big surprises. The new Amer 41 Explorer was designed not to turn heads but to supersize the functionality of the boat—at least as far as the veteran owner is concerned.

Among the innovations are a double tender garage on the forward area and a super-cool crane that resembles a huge side railing but then folds out to launch the tenders. Having a tender deck on a 135-footer is a rarity, even on a much larger superyacht. And the slide-out crane? Never. That’s a one-of-a-kind design that’s both functional while adding to the yacht’s contemporary look.

A New Fuel-Efficient and Fast Yacht from Amer

This 94-Foot Italian Yacht May Be the Greenest of Its Kind

The currently unnamed explorer, now in build with Amer Yachts in Italy, also broke the rules of yacht design by eliminating the beach club and therewith expanding the flybridge.

Miami-based designer Luiz De Basto created the Amer 41 for a repeat client, taking some features from the owner’s previous yacht, Far Far Away, a 127-foot displacement expedition yacht he also penned. Far Far Away has an aft-heavy profile, with guest areas placed near the stern while, like with the new 41, a large tender deck is situated forward. This unusual configuration separates social spaces from service areas while making the boat more functional. The owner loved it so much that he mandated it be a key design feature on his new boat.

“The family enjoyed extensive travels aboard Far Far Away , and their experiences formed the basis for this new design,” De Basto told Robb Report . “The vision was for a larger and improved version that kept the open foredeck, a solution that they had tested and approved.”

The bridge overlooks the foredeck, with a floor-to-ceiling forward angled windshield that gives the captain 270-degrees of visibility. The “floating” dashboard, complete with an advanced electronic package, will be “evocative of a cinematic spaceship,” says De Basto.

The project was originally intended to be 164 feet, below 500 GT, but the owner, who paused the project during Covid, decided to reduce the length to 135 feet. One of his essential requirements was on-deck storage for two 26-foot tenders—plus jet skis—and a raised touch-and-go helipad forward of that for cruising in remote locations. On weekends, it could double as a dance floor.

While this configuration is unusual, it’s a smart solution, especially with the integrated crane. The system was conceived by De Basto for quick launch-and-retrieval of tenders and eliminates the need for an aft tender garage. The crane also gives the boat a cool look that legitimizes its custom explorer design.

The owner also decided to do away with a traditional beach club, which is almost sacrilege in the current design trend of ever-larger beach clubs and swim platforms that usually include foldout side decks.

“The family never used the beach club on their older boat,” says De Basto. “Instead, they decided this time to increase the flybridge by 55 feet. While that’s not hugely evident from the exterior renderings, it actually represents more than 40 percent of the yacht’s total length.”

There’s plenty of space across the yacht for socializing. The aft side exterior decks are dedicated to social activities and also guarantee the family privacy when the boat is docked stern to, which you wouldn’t get with a conventional beach club. On the upper deck is a sky lounge with direct access to alfresco dining, while the flybridge—the area where the family intend to spend most of their time—is dedicated to outdoor entertainment, with sunbeds, a bar, a pizza oven and a rotating sofa. Forward is an observation seating area for privacy. A glass staircase will connect all four decks.

The interior has yet to be revealed but will have a layout similar to the owner’s previous yacht, with five cabins for up to 10 guests on the lower deck amidships. The main deck is given over to a salon and dining area with sliding glass doors on each side. De Basto describes it as having “clean lines, full of texture and oriented around family life.”

“My aim with the Amer 41 Explorer was to incorporate the lifestyle demands of a veteran owner with the functional elements of an explorer yacht,” De Basto continues. “Finding that balance between aesthetics and experiences is an intrinsic part of yacht ownership.”

Optima Design did the naval architecture and hull engineering on the steel hull, which has a shallow draft of 7.4 feet. Optima designed the bottom to enhance fuel efficiency and the Volvo Penta D13 IMO III engines will lower emissions. The 41 is expected to have a cruise speed of 12 knots, with an estimated top speed of 15 knots. Construction at Amer Yachts began in early 2022, with delivery scheduled for early 2025. By then, we should have a name for the innovative explorer.

Porsche-Designed Superyacht Is a 135-Foot-Long Spaceship on Water

Royal Falcon One looks like old money: stuffed with luxury, yet understated. My Other Porsche Is a Superyacht bumper sticker not included.

Porsche Royal Falcon One

  • The slightly unorthodox design of the Royal Falcon One was intended to help differentiate it from its competition.
  • Cost is not specified, although we have reached out to the seller for an estimate.

If you need a break from daydreaming about supercars you can't afford, may we humbly suggest you give daydreaming about superyachts a try? Or perhaps you're wide awake and completely able to afford one. Either way, this Porsche-designed superyacht, now for sale in "low engine miles" condition, is the superyacht for you.

The Royal Falcon One superyacht came about after Royal Falcon Fleet of Singapore went to Studio F.A. Porsche –a subsidiary of the German automaker—with a design brief to make "a spaceship on water." The result was this 135-foot superyacht. It features a catamaran multihull design that allows the stateroom suites to be located at or above the main deck rather than below, which is how standard monohull yachts are designed—and we all know how tedious standard monohulls can be. Royal Falcon Fleet's CEO and president, M. A. Zaman, stated the design of the Royal Falcon One was intended to help differentiate it from its competition. Mission accomplished, Mr. Zaman.

Porsche Royal Falcon One

The craft has a beam of 41 feet, a draft of 6.5 feet, and a gross tonnage of 492. The Royal Falcon One has three guest cabins on the main deck, while the master suite and a VIP suite are on the upper deck. The two outer hulls contain the cabins for the ship's 10-person crew. The tender (smaller service boat) is stowed in the stern, and there is a crane for its deployment and recovery.

The opulent interior utilizes a color palette of whites, grays, and blacks for a spare and dramatic look. Smooth, curving lines evoke images of the Porsche design aesthetic seen in the 911 and its automotive siblings. High-lux appointments include freeform leather couches, a Jacuzzi on the top deck, a main saloon with a backlit bar and panoramic observation deck, and a private open-air deck off the master suite.

The Royal Falcon One was built in Sweden and has two MTU 2300-hp diesel engines capable of maintaining a cruising speed of 15 knots (17.3 mph) and achieving a top speed of 35 knots (40.3 mph). It's currently listed with Camper & Nicholsons at a price only available upon application.

If you could design your ultimate dream vessel – what would that be? Currently under construction in Brazil, with a completion date of early 2011, the Veronika II ( 135 Global Explorer Yachts ) will rival the competition. This 135 foot yacht can do what most other yachts can’t, travel long distances, in a variety of conditions, and still be luxurious to live on. You can go from the warm waters of the equator, to the cold channels of Alaska, all the while looking good when you come in to resupply.

Some of the achievements with this yacht is the master suite. Taking up almost a whole deck, there is plenty of room to move around. There are his and hers bathrooms, a private and separate dressing area for her, and a full study. There is a grand master galley, as well as an entrance to a private forward deck, and opening into the main dining and lounge area. This will also open to a exterior dining area, as well as a swimming platform.

There will be enough room to accommodate up to twelve guests, as well as 8 crew people, each with their own private rooms. Keeping in mind that the guests and owners are only as happy as the crew is, the crew quarters are roomy and accommodating, with the engineer and the captain having their own separate quarters as well. There will be four main guest cabins, two with double twin beds, and two with queen sized beds, all with separate shower and bathrooms. There is an optional fifth guest suite, which will double as a gym. The crew sleeping quarters will have bunk beds and separate shower and toilet facilities as well.

There are many extras with the Global Explorer 135, including two tenders, one of which has a diesel jet motor, so you can go longer distances away from the main ship. With ample seating and even a hot tub, there is no limit to the possibilities with this yacht.

Some of the general specifications include twin Cat C32 motors, with 1100 hp each, and a fuel capacity of just over 20,000 gallons. They have a top speed of 14 knots, and cruise at 12.5. This means that you have to ability to go 4,500 nautical miles without refueling, and it is estimated that if you were to run at a reduced speed of just 10kn, you could realistically go up to 7,000nm one a single tank. It can store up to 2800 gallons of clean drinking water without refiling, and can even make it’s own water, 2,600 gallons per day. This means that you can go longer without having to take on more supplies.

With naval architecture by Overing Yacht Designs and an interior by Michael Kirschstein Designs the Veronika II Explorer superyacht is being built at Inace Shipyard in Brazil. You can find out more about the spectacular Global Explorer Yachts series at many online websites. You can find out the exact specifications, see concept pictures, as well as real time construction photos as the project is being completed. You can also find out about other luxury yachts that are offered by Global Explorer Yachts. There is wealth of information about the general manager, Darren Nightingale , from his history growing up in an a yachting family tradition in Australia, to his early days in the petrol industry, to the reasons why he became the head manager. You can learn about the company’s construction facility in Brazil, as well as a great deal of other things.

Southerly 135

  • By Ralph Naranjo
  • Updated: March 28, 2003

Northshore Yachts, builder of the Southerly 135 Series Three, calls this boat “a variable-draft bluewater cruiser with a raised-deck saloon,” and that just about says it all. This innovative Rob Hum-phreys design is representative of a line of swing-keelers that Northshore Yachts has been building for over two decades. These boats have attracted a strong following in the United Kingdom and Europe, and with over 600 launched, it’s worth taking a look at why owners feel these boats offer them the very best of two distinct cruising worlds.

135 feet yacht

Let’s start with the options that a draft of 2 feet 6 inches opens for a 45-footer in the Bahamas, Chesapeake Bay, the ICW, and other skinny-water estuaries that most monohull sailors seldom get to see close up. Combine this inshore advantage with a seagoing hull built to European Union Category A specs, and add a swing keel that transforms the shoal-draft creek-creeper into a very viable bluewater sailboat. When the swinger is unswung, it becomes a deep, foil-shaped keel with a 9-foot-8-inch draft.

Another key reason for the interest in this boat is her easy motion and user-friendliness under sail. On a chilly fall day with a shifty, 11- to 14-knot northerly breeze kicking up a hint of a Chesapeake chop, the Southerly felt right at home as we ran down the bay. When we hardened up and sheeted in the full main and 120-percent genoa, we were close-reaching at 7.3 knots, building to 7.5 knots as we fell off onto a beam reach. We turned farther off the wind and adjusted trim for a broad reach; boat speed decreased by about a knot. The optional asymmetric spinnaker will help cope in the lighter apparent wind.

Despite a relatively small sail plan, the boat’s sailing performance was good. Her Seldén rig is well thought out, the Furlex roller-furling headsail system was easy to handle, and the placement of sheet leads made sailhandling a snap.

I found the Lewmar 48s a bit small for primary winches on a 45-footer, a problem easily fixed by an upgrade. The steering was finger-touch smooth, and with the keel fully down, the vessel tracked well, indicating the boat has good directional stability. This is an attribute that’s appreciated the more time one spends at the helm. It’s also a key factor in how well a boat responds to a self-steering vane or autopilot.

Serious cruisers recognize the traits that add up to seakindliness, and under way, it became clear that the Southerly 135 had more than her fair share of them. She exhibited neither the quick, jerky motion of a lightweight raceboat nor the bargelike undulations of full-sectioned heavy-displacement cruisers. Her decks, handholds, and lifelines work together to keep crew on board, and the efficient sail plan and substantial punch from the turbocharged 75-horsepower Yanmar diesel get you where you want to go.

An optional furling mainsail and a bow thruster can make sailhandling and maneuvering in tight confines even easier. However, these aren’t on my “must-have” list of options because the Southerly 135 is a comfortable cruiser that can still be handled by a small crew.

Structural Matters

Northshore employs conventional FRP laid up by hand, with balsa core in the deck and in the hull above the waterline. In the deck laminate, plywood infills replace the balsa at each compression point, such as where hardware is installed. The solid laminate below the waterline grows thicker as it approaches the centerline, and a unique keel box is molded as an integral part of the hull. Unidirectional fiberglass is added to high-stress areas, and the underwater surface of the hull has a clear gelcoat. The vessel comes with a five-year blister warrantee.

The keel itself is an articulating, airfoil-shaped blade made of cast iron that weighs 3,610 pounds. It’s held in place by what the builder calls a “grounding plate,” another cast-iron structure that weighs 6,260 pounds. Together, they constitute the ballast package and are attached to the hull in a very rugged manner. The large contact surface between the iron grounding plate and the recess in the hull is well reinforced with transverse and longitudinal structure inside the hull. Twenty-eight 12-millimeter bolts spaced around the perimeter of the grounding plate mechanically fasten the ballast package to the hull. While iron oxidizes more slowly than steel, and modern marine coatings will hold rust to a minimum, some ongoing maintenance still will be needed to keep the bottom paint on the keel and ensure that the grounding plate remains a smooth, flake-free surface.

The swing keel is hinged to the grounding plate on a hefty, 2-inch-diameter, stainless-steel pin that rides on bronze bushings inserted into heavy-duty bosses in the grounding plate itself. It’s a solid, well-reinforced structure, as would be expected since the swing keel weighs as much as a Land Rover, and any trouble with the hinge mechanism itself would become a costly problem. My only concern lies in the difficulty of inspecting the stainless-steel pin, a task requiring the removal of the keel and the grounding plate. Over the long term, galvanic corrosion and electrolysis can affect submerged stainless steel. The builder’s representative with whom I spoke said that pin problems haven’t been an issue in the more than 20 years since Northshore Yachts launched the first swing-keel Southerly.

An electric/hydraulic system raises and lowers the swing keel at the push of a button; there’s a manual backup. A hydraulic ram attached to the upper trailing edge of the keel connects to a Spectra pendant in a purchase. The entire mechanism is contained in the heavily reinforced molded keel-box structure that has an access port for inspection and maintenance of the hydraulic ram, which remains partially submerged.

The low-aspect-ratio rudder is attached to a long skeg that lends it significant support and also provides additional directional stability. The blade itself is semibalanced and, teamed up with a nicely installed Whitlock Mamba bevel-gear, torsion-rod steering system, it gives the helm a smooth, responsive feel. Hard on the wind in heavy seas, the shallow rudder may be less than ideal, and that’s probably one of the reasons why the builder offers a twin-rudder version of the Southerly 135. According to Northshore, “the twin-rudder option provides improved handling and sail-carrying capacity while still allowing the boat to be dried out safely.” The optional tall rig would be a big plus in light-air cruising grounds.

Living Room

The attractive cabin accommodations showcase well-executed joiner work. Two layouts are available. Both retain fore and aft cabins. One provides a middle cabin with a single bunk and locates the galley to starboard under the cockpit; the other option features a big saloon, a nicely placed U-shaped galley with centerline sinks, and more space in the main cabin. The sizable molded keel box doesn’t intrude into the accommodations, and crew will adapt to the ups and downs in the multilevel cabin sole, a characteristic of all raised deck-saloons.

The owner’s spacious stateroom and adjacent head and shower take up much of the aft portion of the vessel and in port provide the feel of a true master’s quarters. However, the big berths at opposite ends of the vessel might be less appreciated during an offshore passage. In addition, the elevation of the cockpit forces the boom to be mounted 10 feet above the waterline, lessening the rig’s sail-carrying ability. Many will accept this tradeoff to acquire these generous accommodations.

The turbocharged Yanmar 75-horsepower diesel, an optional upgrade over the 56-horsepower, naturally aspirated standard engine, pushes the boat at 2,800 rpm smoothly and evenly at a cruising speed of 7.5 knots. The engine installation, like other examples of mechanical and electrical work on this boat, is first-class. I saw no signs of shortcuts. Access to all sides of the engine, however, was a little tight in comparison with other boats of this size. Two water tanks and two fuel tanks—all of them stainless steel—are located amidships to minimize their effect on fore and aft trim as they’re drawn down. Two polypropylene tanks provide a total of 48 gallons of waste capacity. For long-term durability, most materials specialists would recommend aluminum for fuel tanks and stainless steel for the holding tanks.

A high center cockpit offers good visibility but also provides a target for spray off the bow. A foldable dodger gives the helmsman good protection and decent visibility, but it needs a clear-plastic window so the crew reefing the mainsail from under it can see what’s happening to the sail.

A vessel tends to reflect the home waters of its origin, and it’s no surprise to discover that the Southerly 135 is a rugged, well-built cruiser that’s engineered to handle the North Sea and its frequent heavy weather and cold, damp cruising conditions. Small hatches and small dorade vents are a big plus in that climate; still, those planning to spend time in the tropics may wish that the boat’s large, forward-facing saloon windows were actually opening hatches. Effective blinds or covers would help lessen the greenhouse effect caused by sunlight entering the windows, a problem experienced by most raised-deck-saloon vessels.

The side decks are narrow but safe to transit and are capped with the sure footing of a traditional teak deck. Walking from bow to stern, you get the feeling that this is a cruising boat built for sailors by sailors. You immediately notice a useful stem roller, cleats, and chocks that are large enough and strong enough for their tasks. There’s a workbench aft and enough storage for provisions and spares to sail far and long.

Sailor Cole Brauer makes history as the first American woman to race solo around the world

Aboard her 40-foot racing boat First Light ,  29-year-old Cole Brauer just became the first American woman to race nonstop around the world by herself.

The New York native pulled into A Coruña, Spain, on Thursday after a treacherous 30,000-mile journey that took 130 days.

She thanked a cheering crowd of family and fans who had been waiting for her on shore.

“This is really cool and so overwhelming in every sense of the word,” she exclaimed, before drinking Champagne from her trophy.

The 5-foot-2 powerhouse placed second out of 16 avid sailors who competed in the Global Solo Challenge, a circumnavigation race that started in A Coruña with participants from 10 countries. The first-of-its-kind event   allowed a wide range of boats to set off in successive departures based on performance characteristics. Brauer started on Oct. 29, sailing down the west coast of Africa, over to Australia, and around the tip of South America before returning to Spain.

Brauer is the only woman and the youngest competitor in the event — something she hopes young girls in and out of the sport can draw inspiration from.

“It would be amazing if there was just one girl that saw me and said, ‘Oh, I can do that too,’” Brauer said of her history-making sail.

It’s a grueling race, and more than half of the competitors have dropped out so far. One struck something that caused his boat to flood, and another sailor had to abandon his ship after a mast broke as a severe storm was moving in.

The four-month journey is fraught with danger, including navigating the three “Great Capes” of Africa, Australia and South America. Rounding South America’s Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet, is often likened to climbing Mount Everest because of its perfect storm of hazards — a sharp rise in the ocean floor and whipping westerly winds push up massive waves. Combined with the frigid waters and stray icebergs, the area is known as a graveyard for ships, according to NASA. Brauer  said  she was “so unbelievably stoked” when she sailed past Cape Horn in January.

Marco Nannini, organizer of the Global Solo Challenge, said the comparison to scaling Mount Everest doesn’t capture the difficulty of the race. Sailing solo means not just being a skipper but a project manager — steering the boat, fixing equipment, understanding the weather and maintaining one’s physical health.

Nannini cited the relatively minuscule number of people who have sailed around the world solo — 186, according to the International Association of Cape Horners — as evidence of the challenges that competitors face. More than 6,000 people have climbed Mount Everest, according to  High Adventure Expeditions .

Brauer stared down 30-foot waves that had enough force to throw her across the boat. In a scare caught on camera, she badly injured her rib   near the halfway point of the event. At another point, her team in the U.S. directed Brauer to insert an IV into her own arm due to dehydration from vomiting and diarrhea.

She was able to stay in constant communication with members of her team, most of whom are based in New England,   and keep herself entertained with Netflix and video calls with family through Starlink satellites.   That’s also how Brauer was able to use Zoom to connect with NBC News for an interview, while she was sailing about 1,000 miles west of the Canary Islands.

While Brauer was technically alone on First Light, she had the company of 450,000 followers on Instagram, where she frequently got candid about life on an unforgiving sea while reflecting on her journey.

“It all makes it worth it when you come out here, you sit on the bow, and you see how beautiful it is,” she said in an Instagram video, before panning the camera to reveal the radiant sunrise.

Brauer grew up on Long Island but didn’t learn to sail until she went to college in Hawaii. She traded in her goal of becoming a doctor for life on the water. But she quickly learned making a career as a sailor is extremely difficult, with professional racers often hesitant to welcome a 100-pound young woman on their team.

Even when she was trying to find sponsors for the Global Solo Challenge, she said a lot of people “wouldn’t touch her with a 10-foot pole” because they saw her as a “liability.”

Brauer’s message to the skeptics and naysayers? “Watch me.”

“I push so much harder when someone’s like, ‘No, you can’t do that,’ or ‘You’re too small,’” Brauer explained.

“The biggest asset is your mental strength, not the physical one,” Nannini said. “Cole is showing everyone that.”

Brauer hopes to continue competing professionally and is already eyeing another around-the-world competition, but not before she gets her hands on a croissant and cappuccino.

“My mouth is watering just thinking about that.”

Russian oligarch's yacht is costing U.S. taxpayers close to $1 million a month

thumbnail

A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings.

  • The Justice Department is seeking permission to sell Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov.
  • Attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.

Seized Russian yacht costs American taxpayers millions in maintenance

The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the "excessive costs" of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month.

"It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through [a] sale," according to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors on Friday.

The monthly charges for Amadea, which is now docked in San Diego, California, include $600,000 per month in running costs: $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food and other expenses. They also include $144,000 in monthly pro-rata insurance costs and special charges including dry-docking fees, at $178,000, bringing the total to $922,000, according to the filings.

The battle over Amadea and the costs to the government highlight the financial and legal challenges of seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs after the country's invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort.

Her comments echoed government calls in the spring of 2022 to freeze the yachts, private jets and mansions of Russian billionaires in hopes of putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising money for the war effort.

Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly. In London, Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler has waged a court battle over his private jets that were impounded, and Sergei Naumenko has been appealing the detention of his superyacht Phi.

The battle over Amadea began in April 2022, when it was seized in Fiji at the request of the U.S. government, according to the court filings.

Though the U.S. alleges that the yacht is owned by Kerimov, who made his fortune in mining, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.

In court filings, Khudainatov's attorneys have objected to the U.S. government's efforts to sell the yacht, saying a rushed sale could lead to a distressed sale price and that the maintenance costs are minor relative to the potential sale value.

Khudainatov's attorneys refuse to pay the ongoing maintenance costs as long as the government pursues a sale and forfeiture. However, they say their client will reimburse the U.S. government for the more than $20 million already spent to maintain the yacht if it's returned to its proper owner.

In court papers, the government says Kerimov disguised his ownership of Amadea through a series of shell companies and other owners. They say emails between crew members show Kerimov "was the beneficial owner of the yacht, irrespective of the titleholder of the vessel."

The emails show that Kerimov and his family ordered several interior improvements of the yacht, including a new pizza oven and spa, and that between 2021 and 2022, when the boat was seized, "there were no guest trips on the Amadea that did not include either Kerimov or his family members," according to the court filings.

The government also says Kerimov has been trying to sell Amadea for years, so a sale would be in keeping with his intent.

"This is not a situation in which a court would be ordering sale of a precious heirloom that a claimant desperately wishes to keep for sentimental reasons," the government said in filings.

Even if Amadea were sold quickly, the proceeds wouldn't automatically go to the government. Under law, the money would be held while Khudainatov and the government continue their battle in court over the ownership and forfeiture. Don't miss these stories from CNBC PRO:

Japan says it'll join the U.S. military in returning its Ospreys to flight following the deaths of eight U.S. service members in a crash there in November. U.S. Naval Air Systems Command on Friday announced the return of the Ospreys, which fly like an airplane and convert to a helicopter. Japan’s defense minister says his nation will likewise return its Ospreys to flight status following an “adequate” analysis of the crash. Before clearing the Osprey, U.S. officials said they put increased attention on its proprotor gearbox, instituted new limitations on how it can be flown and added maintenance inspections. The U.S. fleet was grounded Dec. 6, a week after a CV-22B Osprey crashed off Yakushima island.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — California authorities shut down 100 miles of Interstate 80 on Friday as the biggest snow storm of the season bore down on the Sierra Nevada, where residents were urged to take shelter and stay off roads as they prepared for up to 10 feet of snow in some areas and damaging winds.

“AAANNNDD WE’RE CLOSED!!” the California Highway Patrol posted on X, previously known as Twitter, saying the closure was due to “spin outs, high winds, and low visibility. No estimated time of reopening the freeway.”

Authorities closed the interstate in both directions after 5 p.m. on a day when the majority of more than a dozen ski resorts around Lake Tahoe were closed, a tornado touched down in central California and visitors to Yosemite National Park were told to leave. The 100-mile (160-kilometer) closure is at the state border just west of Reno, Nevada to near Emigrant Gap, California.

California Highway Patrol, state transportation officials and other authorities reported throughout the day that troopers and others were responding to dozens of collisions on I-80, cars sliding into snow banks or getting stuck on the side of slick roadways. There were no immediate reports of any serious injuries.

A tornado touched down Friday afternoon in Madera County before 4 p.m., said Andy Bollenbacher, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Hanford. It caused some damage to an elementary school, he said.

The National Weather Service in Reno said late Friday it expects the heaviest snow to arrive after midnight, continuing with blizzard conditions and blowing snow through Saturday that could reduce visibility to one-quarter mile or less.

The storm began barreling into the region on Thursday, with the biggest effects expected to close major highways and trigger power outages Friday afternoon into Saturday. A blizzard warning through Sunday morning covers a 300-mile (482-kilometer) stretch of the mountains.

Rick Grundy, manager of the Chevron Food Mart near Donner Lake just off Interstate 80, said business was slow Friday — people seemed to have taken officials’ advice to hunker down. After living in the Truckee, California, area for 20 years, he said he knows how to prepare for bad weather.

“We’re pretty well stocked. We knew this was coming,” Grundy said. “One thing I’ve learned, if you are not used to driving in this weather, if you’re not used to being in this area, it’s not a good idea. You should stay home.”

Meteorologists predict as much as 10 feet (3 meters) of snow is possible in the mountains around Lake Tahoe by the weekend, with 3 to 6 feet (0.9 to 1.8 meters) in the communities on the lake’s shores and more than a foot (30 centimeters) possible in the valleys on the Sierra’s eastern front, including Reno.

Winds are expected to gust in excess of 115 mph (185 kph) over Sierra ridgetops, and 70 mph (113 kph) at lower elevations.

Backcountry avalanche warnings were in place in various areas. All visitors at Yosemite were supposed to be out as of noon Friday, with the park closed at least through noon Sunday. More than 7 feet (2.13 meters) of snow could fall in some areas.

Many Lake Tahoe ski resorts said they were staying closed Friday due to conditions.

But the snow wasn’t all bad news for the resorts. Palisades Tahoe ski resort said the big dump expected over the weekend on top of 8 feet (2.4 meters) of snow in February should allow them to keep the slopes open through Memorial Day.

In South Lake Tahoe, the lunchtime crowd at Heidi’s Pancake House was a third of the typical 60 diners. Even with the worsening forecast, general manager Salvador Ortega expected to stay open and most of his employees to show up.

“We are one of the restaurants in South Lake Tahoe that don’t close unless we don’t have power or something breaks down. We’re open 365,” he said. “Tahoe is a small community. It’s rare when an employee doesn’t make it to work.”

Ortega said he believes the snowfall will ultimately be good for the community and increase tourism once it’s safe to travel again.

Andrew Schwartz, the lead scientist at UC-Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Lab , said it is possible they could break their modern-day record of about 3.5 feet (1 meter) of snow in a single day from back in 1989.

On the bright side, California water officials said the storm should provide a much-needed boost to the Sierra snowpack, which is vital to the state’s water supplies. It stood at 80% of average to date on Thursday, California Department of Water resources officials said.

Todd Cummings decided to drive from Santa Cruz to the Lake Tahoe area ahead of the storm. His destination, the Northstar resort, did open, but the slopes were far from packed.

“Nobody’s here,” he said in a brief phone interview during his first chairlift ride of the day. “They have limited trails open but this lift goes to the top.”

Dazio reported from Los Angeles. Associated Press reporters John Antczak in Los Angeles and Olga Rodriguez and Janie Har in San Francisco contributed to this report.

An aerial view of the Colossea

As for the airship, the carbon-fiber blimp is held down by secure ropes until given the green light to disengage. Dubbed the Norge 2.0, it’s named after the semi-rigid Italian airship that completed the first verified trip of any kind to the North Pole, way back in May 1926. According to Lazzarini, it was also the first craft to fly over the polar ice cap between Europe and the United States. The new version, designed to blend in with the yacht, features 10 guest cabins for a comfortable flying experience for all on board.

This isn’t the first time Lazzarini has experimented with combining sea and air transport. Back in 2022, the firm debuted the Air Yacht , which involved a 262-foot hull sitting between two 492-foot airships . And last year, the 243-foot Plectrum was designed with giant wings that would allow it to “fly” across the ocean. “This different superyacht configuration will allow much faster travel than conventional ships of a similar size,” the studio said in a statement at the time.

As for who the Colossea may be perfect for, Lazzarini sent a not-so-subtle message in one of its renderings of the airship. Trailing behind the craft is a banner that reads “Elon, get in touch!” As far as we know, the X (formerly known as Twitter) CEO doesn’t yet own a superyacht, although he does have several private jets in his possession. Perhaps the Colossea could fill a hole in the billionaire’s modes of transport.
