The History of Mangusta Yachts

mangusta yachts wikipedia

The story of Mangusta is an Italian dream realised by Giuseppe Balducci, the company founder. Giuseppe was born in Limite sull’Arno, a seaside town in Tuscany where he began his career working in a historic shipyard in Viareggio, but his entrepreneurial spirit and his talent for capturing market trends soon spurred him to look for more. Thus Elettromare, Effebi and, later, the Overmarine Group were born.

The Balducci family founded Mangusta in 1985, choosing a symbolic and meaningful name for the company. At the time, the leading brand for open, fast sailing vessels was Cobra by Tecnomarine. Named after the mongoose – the only animal that can tackle and defeat cobras – Mangusta clearly set out to challenge the status quo.

The family-owned and family-managed business now includes Giuseppe’s children, Maurizio and Katia Balducci. We are a team deep rootly in our Italian heritage, always loyal to our original values, yet able to keep our gaze aimed towards the future.

Since the beginning of its journey, Mangusta revolutionized yachting with its innovations. In the 1990s, the company launched the Mangusta 80. Up until that moment, “open” yachts had never reached 80 feet in length and, most importantly, had always forced buyers to compromise between speed and space, sportiness and comfort. Mangusta changed that forever, building a large, high-performance sports yacht that was exceptionally comfortable and liveable. The Mangusta 80 was a huge success, leaving its mark in history and making the brand known all over the world. It was the beginning of Maxi Open! Over the years, models grew even bigger. Their streamlined, sporty lines make them timeless classics – true icons in their field.

Visionaries by nature, Mangusta’s engineers continue to achieve new heights in yacht design and performance. In recent years, the company had developed two new lines. In 2016, we introduced the first tri-deck yacht in the Mangusta Oceano line: displacement vessels with great range that allow you to travel the world in style, to any destination and across any distance. More recently, the new Mangusta GranSport line launched, setting a new benchmark by merging top performances and transoceanic range. Mangusta’s story continues, with a fleet destined to grow.

Mangusta believes that every yacht is a perfect opportunity to fuel Owners’ dreams. And to surpass them. It is a journey that begins by hearing Clients’ desires and visions, continues by building a shape around them, and is completed by designing custom interiors and adding the engineering and technological expertise found at Mangusta shipyards. A journey that crosses the ocean and reaches perfection. Where the only limit is your imagination. Visionaries by nature, dream shapers by tradition.

Shipyards are Mangusta’s real, beating heart. Located in Tuscany near Massa, Viareggio and Pisa, the company’s various production sites total approximately 190,000 square metres and closely control every step entailed in building a new yacht. From design to manufacture and from launch to delivery, this is where dreams by Mangusta take shape.

Mangusta’s Pisa production plant is at Pisa’s Dock (Darsena Pisana), just 5 minutes from the city’s airport. It is completely dedicated to metalworking, especially for the two new Mangusta Oceano and Mangusta GranSport lines. The plant extends over 22,000 square meters, allowing for various megayachts up to 70 meters to be built at the same time. The location also includes a showroom and a dedicated technical department

The Viareggio shipyard focuses mostly on building Mangusta Maxi Open models, fast and sporty yachts that have become icons of the brands across the globe. At this location, Mangusta also has its headquarters, a creative department ready to meet any Owners’ style needs, a cutting-edge technical department, a quay with expert captains and a 24/7 after-sales department.

The Massa plant is dedicated to forming and rolling activities, needed in manufacturing large composite yachts. An internationally renowned shipyard, upholding the highest standards in quality, technology, engineering and production capacity. Article created by Torrens Luxury Collection, Gold Coast Australia. Mangusta Yachts Logo

Founded in 1985

Founded by Giuseppe Balducci

The Mangusta brand was created in 1985 by the Balduccis, in business since 1960. The family still heads the company, too: Overmarine Group.

With more than 300 yachts delivered and so many years in the business, today Mangusta approaches the market with its own uniqueness. It proposes three product lines, all offering new, innovative contents. All allowing Owners to experience the sea dependant on their own personal interpretation.

The traditional yacht line is that of Mangusta Maxi Opens, a segment in which the Group is a market leader. These are the Mediterranean yachts par excellence. They allow you to dart from one place to the other in outstanding comfort, in terms of quietness, stabilization and vibration. In addition, the yachts have large, exquisitely balanced spaces inside and out. The 50m in the 165E series is an absolute icon of style and performance and represents unparalleled success.

The current range features 94 to 215 ft yachts.

The Mangusta Oceano line features long-range yachts in metal. We find here applied the same technological contents developed for high-performance yachts (focused on onboard comfort) and the same concepts of balancing open spaces with internal volumes. These are ships optimised for a range to rival those of explorer types, of up to 5,000 miles. They have a beach area that could become a toy area as well. Three 43-meter units were delivered and others are under construction, with projects up to 60m.

The Mangusta GranSport line is the technical and stylistic syntheses of the other two lines. It’s a fast displacement yacht, with great range and the best performance at displacement speed but can simultaneously reach higher speeds typical of high-performance yachts, if requested. The first 54-meter has been delivered in summer 2018 with the second hull currently under construction.

The first 45- metre version is sold and the second hull is under construction.

The Group spans 10 production facilities in Tuscany,  Italy, in the areas of Viareggio, Massa and Pisa, totaling around 190,000 square meters. It also has two wharfs, equipped for the final preparation of the yachts, layover and the after sales service. All processes are carried out within the Group’s companies, from designing and making moulds, to moulding, lamination in composite materials, cutting the steel through to fitting the interiors, including the electronics and onboard systems. The Group also has its own in-house Design Dept. able to satisfy all the layout and decor demands of our Owners, as well as a cutting-edge Technical Office and After Sales service available 24/7.

It additionally has branch offices, in Miami USA, and Golfe Juan, French Riviera. These, plus a strategically based network of dealers, guarantee complete assistance.

Mangusta Oceano 44 Reviewed

Mangusta Oceano 44

Roald Dahl’s character Willy Wonka had a great glass elevator that transported him wherever he wanted to go. Hull No. 1 of Overmarine’s Mangusta Oceano 44 reminded me of that story. This yacht is elevated by glass, and it has the potential to take owners just about anywhere.

This 146-foot, 461-gross-ton steel-and-aluminum design, perhaps more so than any other yacht I have seen recently, takes the tri-deck concept to new heights. Based on a hull platform from Pierluigi Ausonio and with design by Alberto Mancini, this superyacht has a particularly strong, modern profile and a light, bright, contemporary interior. Mancini is skilled at blending inside and outside spaces, in this case with sole-to-ceiling windows, sliding doors, and ghost bulwarks and balustrades.

Powered with twin 1,700 hp MTU 12V 2000 M86 diesels, the Oceano 44 reportedly reaches a top speed of 15 to 16 knots, depending on load. That said, an efficient 11 to 12 knots will be more than enough for typical cruising. At that speed, and with a fuel capacity of almost 19,000 gallons, this yacht is capable of more than 4,000 nautical miles. In theory, that’s enough for at least a trans-Atlantic crossing.

Mangusta Oceano 44 interior

Whether it’s a long passage or a long weekend, the owner can spend overnights in the main-deck master stateroom. It occupies the full 28-foot-6-inch beam and has full-beam en suite facilities forward that include a bathtub and a shower stall, a vanity desk to port, a dressing area with flanking closets and a fold-down balcony.

Guests aboard Hull No. 1 can stay in what could easily be called a second owners’ stateroom aft on the deck above the master—an optional layout that replaces the standard sky lounge. In the stateroom configuration, this space includes a walk-through dressing area with flanking closets and mirrors, a portside en suite head, a vanity desk and a free-standing seat to starboard. The views from this space are spectacular, given full-height glazing on three sides that, to some degree, will slide open. Glass upper bulwarks on either side also help make the vistas impressive.

Mangusta Oceano 44

The remaining four en suite guest staterooms are on the lower deck. Two have double berths, and two have twins as well as Pullmans.

There is walkaround room outside the upper deck. Inside, a captain’s cabin and ship’s office are abaft the wheelhouse, which also has wide-open views through full-height wraparound vertical windows. The bridge has doors to the port and starboard side decks and wing stations. Up front are double-bunk crew cabins, the crew mess and the yacht’s laundry.

For guests to relax seaside, there is a beach club aft with a teak-clad lower-deck lounge that occupies the full beam abaft the engine room. On the first Oceano 44, this space includes a bar, wraparound Minotti sofas and a day head. Underway, all that is seen around the waterline aft is a narrow swim platform, but at anchor, the stern can be transformed with fold-down surfaces. Part of the transom becomes a swim deck, and “beach lounges” open to the sides, effectively creating a walkaround stern. Tenders and toys are kept in a garage beneath the foredeck with a portside hinge-up door and gantry crane.

Mangusta Oceano 44

Additional guest relaxation areas include the cockpit, which has stand-alone furniture and great views, thanks to an absence of opaque bulwarks and transom structure. Glass panes inset into the aft-deck sole serve as skylights to the beach club below. A foredeck pool has sun pads and chaise longues, creating what the shipyard calls an “island spa.” The pool has glass walls and glazed panels in its base that serve as skylights for the master stateroom en suite below.

Up top, half of the 1,100-square-foot sun deck has hardtop protection. Free-standing furniture from Paola Lenti with upholstery from Mariaflora is here, along with a wet bar and stools. Staircases head down to the upper-deck guest lobby and pantry, aiding circulation for guests and crew. A few discreet doors also let crew move around with minimal impact on guests.

Mangusta Oceano 44 stateroom

When guests want the sanctuary of ceilings and air conditioning, there’s a conventional main salon. Hull No. 1’s is open plan, with Poltrona Frau sofas and armchairs, and an amidships dining room flanked by full-height sliding-glass doors.

Overmarine Group has considerable experience building semicustom yachts. It has been turning out Mangustas for 40 years, with more than 120 bigger than 100 feet length overall. The Mangusta Oceano 44 continues this tradition of excellence.

Mangusta Oceano 44

Where It’s Made

Northwest Italy-based Overmarine has many production areas in and around Viareggio, Massa and Pisa. Mangusta Oceano 44s are built in Pisa, close to the city’s airport and backed up to a canal that connects to Livorno and the sea.

In the Works

Owned by the Balducci family, Overmarine has around 20 yachts in progress with an average length of 130 feet across three ranges: full-displacement or fast-displacement  composite and steel aluminum builds, semi-displacement aluminum Gransports, and composite planing Maxi Opens.

The Mangusta Oceano 44 replaces the Oceano 42/43, six of which delivered between 2016 and 2021. Thus far, five of the new model have been sold. One was delivered as Sagas, and four are under construction. The second hull should be delivered this spring, with the next available slot allowing a 2025 handover.

The first three composite Mangusta Oceano 39s are also sold and under construction. The first is due to launch this spring. Two Oceano 50s have been delivered, and another three are in build.

Five Gransport 33s have been delivered, and four are in build. The next available slot is for delivery in 2025.

Overmarine Group Yachts

With its corporate offices located in Viareggio, Italy, luxury yacht conglomerate Overmarine Group builds open and displacement power superyachts under the Mangusta and Mangusta Oceanco brand names. Its product line ranges from 22 to 65 metres.

History of Overmarine Yachts

Luxury yacht builder Overmarine Group was founded in 1985 by the Balducci family, which continues to run the company. The Group operates 10 Italy-based manufacturing facilities in the regions of Viareggio, Massarosa, Massa and Pisa, Tuscany. Under the brand names Mangusta and Mangusta Oceanco, Overmarine has delivered more than 300 yachts during its 30 years of operation. The luxury yacht builder helped to pioneer the design of high-performance superyachts with its Mangusta Maxi Open series. Its new Mangusta Oceanco displacement line features 42 and 46-metre yachts.

Notable Overmarine Superyachts

In May, 2015, superyacht builder Overmarine Group launched its first 40.2m Mangusta 132; the fourth Mangusta Maxi Open model to be introduced by Overmarine Group, following the Maxi Open 94, 110 and 165 models. The 49.9m Mangusta 165E Maxi Open superyacht Moonraker , delivered in 2014, is the eighth hull in the Mangusta 165 series, but the first to have the designation “E” for “Evolution”.
