In this, our second piece on the BVI’s mega yacht industry, Claire Shefchik explores one of the most well-known mega yachts in the world, recently seen in our waters

Flying Fox, a 136-metre Lurssen, sleek and dove-grey, is reputed to be the world’s largest charter yacht, has already discovered the waters of the BVI. A-list celebs have reportedly been spotted taking the rays on deck. Photos from yacht’s charter agent, Imperial, reveal the wonders that await anyone with $3 million to spend to experience them, along with 25 of their guests across 11 cabins. How could it not be worth it?

According to Imperial, she emerged in 2019 as part of a partnership between two superyacht superstars, award-winning exterior designer Espen Øino and interior designer Mark Berryman, who used Japanese influences for the yacht’s look.

“The aim of the designer was to create a feeling of refined tranquillity, with a small palette of colours, materials and finishes for a cohesive look – golden oak, caramel bamboo, brushed limestone, travertine marble and cream leather, as well as rattans and coconut shell embellishment,” writes Imperial.

A 22.5-metre wide beam means as much room as you need to spread out and get comfortable. A luxurious living space together with a unique design on both exterior and interior. The massive swimming pool runs transversely on the Main deck, a first for a superyacht of this size and a technological challenge unlocked. The yacht is loaded with eight tenders and about a bazillion toys from “fly boards, kites and hoverboards to sea bobs and windsurfs.”

Everyone knows the BVI’s most breathtaking sites are under the waves, with reef sharks, sting rays and giant groupers lurking amid legendary wrecks and coral reefs. Its dive centre is something more akin to a naval vessel. From advanced nitrox to underwater scooters, its rigorous instructors, who often double as fitness leaders, can take you from zero to hero with a PADI certification in a matter of weeks, even if you’ve never dived before.

The spa is particularly breathtaking. At 400 square metres and two floors, it would be hard not to relax there. Imperial describes its services as those “only a palace can offer.” Its Cryosauna, has been reported to be the first ever installed on a yacht. It’s the opposite of a traditional sauna, and it’s brisk, to say the least. It blasts you with cold instead of heat, complete with two chambers that get down to -110 degrees Celsius.

For those landlubbers who miss terra firma, the yacht’s UV-powered smart garden has an exotic array of greenery and shrubbery, with an irrigation system programmed to give each plant the correct amount of nutrients and water.

The only charter superyacht that has two helipads, capable of accommodating the biggest helicopters you can throw at it. The larger one can even be converted into a dance floor so you can keep the seafaring party going all night. And in a vessel like this, you’ll want to.

The future of megayachts in BVI

The megayachts are here. They’re easy to spot out on the horizon, emerging from the mists like giant waterbirds, a mix of sleek lines and unexpected angles. There are 40 foot swimming pools and gyms staffed with hard-driving trainers. People speculate about who’s onboard, anyone from Hollywood starlets to royalty to tech moguls. Someday, it could be you.

They have the power to sail to the limits of the known world, almost but they choose to come here, to BVI, whose secluded cays and anchorages and world-class amenities, from five-star restaurants to laid-back beach shacks, are suitable for all tastes. And BVI wants more of them.

At a press conference earlier this year, Premier Andrew Fahie said, “We have a product that is in demand by the mega yacht industry as well. We have seen the interest by the mega yachting sectors so we know that the confidence is there and we are also aware that there is an interest and a market if we can accommodate additional and larger cruise vessels.” He said the government is conducting a feasibility study to see whether more megayachts could soon be setting sail for BVI shores. That may involve a new and bigger pier that can accommodate them, such as those that exist in the Mediterranean and other Caribbean destinations. After all, even the most adventurous megayachts have to come to port sometime. And that can mean big money for a territory already full of service providers who serve tourists, who are looking for opportunities after a difficult few years. And for those who have the money to spend, an unforgettable journey.

“Once the BVIPA completes its study we will be one step closer to realising our goal which is to capture the additional economic opportunities for our marine industries and create the avenues for our taxi drivers, tour operators, restaurants, shops, craft vendors and all the others,” he said.

With any luck, like massive swans, the megayachts will continue to alight on BVI waters for years to come, helping the economy, gracing the horizon, and igniting the dreams and imaginations of all who look up and see them.

St Thomas Yachting: When to Go

A St. Thomas yacht charter is wonderful at any time of the year. Peak season is considered mid-December through April, with heightened interest in charters around Christmas and New Year’s. Summer months offer more tranquility with fewer yachts and visitors.

Cruising Conditions

Thanks to the easterly trade winds, protected bays and short passages, St. Thomas is home to some of the best cruising grounds in the Caribbean. The trade winds provide a steady breeze, averaging between 10 to 20 knots, which pick up slightly around Christmas. Visibility is excellent throughout the year.

St. Thomas is also blessed with beautiful weather. Temperatures hover in the mid-70s to mid-80s for most of the year, before peaking in the upper 80s in the summer months.

Dronningens Gade, the main commercial street in Charlotte Amalie, is another favorite destination, with numerous markets and eclectic shops.

  • BVI's luxury crewed yacht charters !

ABOUT BVI’S Super yacht charters and luxury crewed sailing holidays in the British Virgin Islands are an experience of a lifetime.  Yet it wasn't always so. Three hundred years ago, the 50-plus islands of the British Virgin Islands were swarmed by pirates, who took refuge in the protected waters and kept guard from secluded mountain look-outs. Some say there is still buried treasure lying around.

Today, the finest of sailing itineraries and magnificent anchorages still attract private yacht charter clients and holiday makers from around the world and most visitors still spend much of their time in or on the sea. There are relatively few dangerous reefs, with the exception of Anegada – a favourite spot for divers and fishermen – so conditions are ideal even for part-time sailors, with safe waters and a constant breeze to fill your sails. Sparkling sandy bays beneath striking cliffs are favourite stopping-off points for beach picnics.

Sailing, Diving and Snorkelling: Scuba diving is popular around sunken reefs and wrecks and with some super yachts carrying their own diving equipment there is no better location to experience the deep water diving for the first time. Among wreck dives, RMS Rhone is reckoned to be the best in the Western hemisphere. Once the pride of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, the Rhone hit Salt Island in a storm in 1867 and sunk. It is now an official marine park.  Snorkellers should visit the four caves at Norman Island, said to be the setting for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. Windsurfers benefit from steady winds and calm water. On land, there are national parks to be explored, including Little Fort, with the remains of a Spanish castle, and the Coppermine ruin on Virgin Gorda. For naturalists, Anegada's 1,100 acre (4.5 sq km)bird sanctuary is a must, as is Sage Mountain, the last remnant of a rainforest on Tortola.  The BVI has only 19,000 inhabitants and more than 30 of the islets are uninhabited. Most of the population of Tortola live in and around the capital, Road Town. The other principal islands are Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost van Dyke. Virgin Gorda can be reached by both ferry and light aircraft, Anegada by light aircraft and Jost van Dyke by ferry.

Anchorages, Bars, Partying: Throughout this fabulous super yacht charter destination, BVI's beaches are splendid and the beach bars exceptional. Even though most of the super yachts on offer have professional chefs on board and a good number of luxury crewed yachts provide all inclusive charter rates, it is good to know that gourmet cuisine can be found easily, along with background music of steel pans and guitars, but don’t expect early-hours entertainment – except at festival times and other special occasions when parades and parties rule the islands.  Numerous bars line up the coast and secret anchorages for idyllic sailing adventure can still be found on occasion. INDIVIDUAL VIRGIN ISLANDS: TORTOLA The largest island in the BVI, Tortola offers a variety of exciting vacation possibilities. This is where the international airport is based and unless your super yacht has a helipad and a helicopter the likelyhood is that we will arrange your embarkation nearby.

VIRGIN GORDA The third largest island of the BVI, Virgin Gorda measures eight and a half square miles. It is a must visit on any private yacht charter itinerary.

JOST VAN DYKE Although it measures just four miles by three, with the highest point at 1,054 feet, Jost Van Dyke has fewer than 200 inhabitants, and they are widely known as a welcoming people.  This is where most super yacht charter clients spend at least one night partying.

ANEGADA The only coral island in the volcanic BVI chain, Anegada measures 11 miles by three, its highest point is just 28 feet above sea level.  Quite far given the relatively small distances in the BVI's, this island is for those yacht charter clients who wish to escape from crowds.

OTHER Islands Scattered in an aquamarine sea, the British Virgin Islands flank the broad Sir Francis Drake Channel, which has beguiled sailors for centuries with scalloped coves and good anchorages. There are over 60 islands in all, whose names reflect their colourful past. The other main islands are discussed in this section.

BVI Yacht Charter

The British Virgin Islands (or just the “BVI” to those who have been there) is a wonderful area to do a BVI yacht charter and especially if you are fortunate enough to do your charter on the 150′ motor yacht ENCORE!

Motor Yacht Encore 150′

I was invited on a FAM trip (familiarization trip) by the manager of ENCORE and was also able to bring my wife along (not common for these FAM trips so it was a great opportunity for Cathy to experience the “tough” duties I’m expected to perform when reviewing charter yachts for my clients)! There would be one other broker (Rebecca) as well as a photographer (Jim) and a writer for Power and Motoryacht Magazine (Alyssa) and the manager of the yacht (Allison) for a total of 6 “guests” on this gorgeous 12 guest yacht. (ps – there were 10 crew members so needless to say, you do get some excellent service on a yacht like this)!

Encore Master Cabin

After arriving at Beef Island Airport on Tortola (officially “Terence B. Lettsome Int’l Airport” code is EIS) in the late afternoon on a Tuesday we are met at the airport by Captain Roy and crew who shuttle us by mini-van a “whopping” quarter of a mile (if that) over to the dock at Trellis Bay. There we board the tender which takes us out to our BVI Yacht Charter home for the next 4 days, the 150′ motor yacht ENCORE!

Once we are settled into our cabins (Cathy and I were fortunate enough to get the Master Suite – awesome!) we sample some of Chief Stewardess Cassie’s special cool drinks and chat with the other members of our group before we sit down to dinner.

Getting ready for dinner with Capt. Roy and Chief Stew. Stephanie

Captain Roy and Purser/Interior Manager (and Roy’s wife) Stephanie joined us for a wonderful dinner the first night and during the dinner conversation it was mentioned that since we had a small group that it would be nice to have some different crew members joins us for dinner each evening. That would give us a chance to get to know them better and give the crew the opportunity to experience a yacht charter from the guests perspective. Captain Roy agreed and I really think this turned out to be a great experience for all of us.

It really was great to get a chance to talk with these crew members in a more social rather than work atmosphere. And it was particularly unique to have the Chief Engineer, Eugene, eat with us. You don’t often see the Engineers on these bvi yacht charters as they are always busy making sure all the mechanicals are working as they should. Eugene is Cuban and he had some interesting stories about his arrival in the US!

And Stewardesses Cassie and Anais, who usually are serving the meals, got the chance to experience “the other side of the table” and see what it was like to be the “guests”!

The table is set for our first breakfast in the British Virgin Islands.

These large yacht charters can be as formal or as casual as you like. The Caribbean is generally quite casual so we ended up eating virtually all of our meals at the dining table on the aft deck (as you see above). However they do have a very nice inside dining area for more formal meals. The next morning (Wednesday) our charter offically begins! And what is the most important meal of the day? BREAKFAST! Talk about a fabulous way to start your morning! Chef Jean-Paul prepared a wonderful breakfast, add in the sunshine, islands, and warm Caribbean breeze…..is it nap time yet! Ooops! Forgot we still have a full day ahead of us!

Our dive instructor, Gierdre giving us our pre-dive instructions.

After our delicious breakfast Captain Roy informs us that we are heading over to Norman Island to do some diving (and snorkeling for the non-divers). There has been some rain prior to our arrival so the water at some of the usual dive areas is a bit cloudy so he thinks The Caves at Norman Island might offer some better water clarity for our dive.

A few of us are either new to diving or have not been diving for some time so Gierdre is going to give a bit of a refresher course on our way over to Norman Island.

Preparing for Dive at Norman Island Caves

Once we arrive at Norman Island Captain Roy anchors ENCORE over in The Bight and we take the tender over to the Caves for our dive. Gierdre gets us all geared up and in the water and off we go!

This is a great spot whether you dive or just like to snorkel. The water is only about 30 feet deep and even shallower as you get closer to the caves along the shore.

After the dive it’s back to ENCORE to get refreshed and have lunch. Then a quiet afternoon lounging around and towards evening the “Painkiller Tour” begins on the Willy T.

The Willy T (William Thornton) at The Bight on Norman Island.

The Willy T is basically just a floating bar anchored in The Bight at Norman Island. If you are anchored here for the evening it’s almost a requirement that you have to stop by for a cool drink. And we heard they made a mean Painkiller so…………

On board the Willy T. Let the “Painkiller Tour” begin! (Unfortunately, as the designated drivers, Captain Roy and deckhand Morgan could not participate in the Painkiller judging)!

Wow, the Willy T does make a mean Painkiller! I think you really need to watch yourself with these or you may be spending the night at the Willy T and I didn’t see any sleeping accommodations! (But I guess if you get to that point would you really notice)?

Fortunately we were all well-behaved and after a good time aboard the Willy T it was back to ENCORE for another very nice bvi yacht charter dinner.

Heading out of The Bight at Norman Island on our way to Jost Van Dyke (stop #2 on the “Painkiller Tour”)!

The next morning we were off to Jost Van Dyke for an island tour, beaching, and of course to sample a few of the islands beverages (read: Painkillers)!

On our arrival to Jost Van Dyke, Captain Roy had made arrangements for us to take an island tour by 4 wheel drive vehicle (I found out why later)! There are some beautiful views from this island and we saw many nice beaches and harbors. One that Cathy and I particularly liked from previous years of bareboating (drive it yourself yachting) was Little Harbor.

Harris’s (on the left) and Sydney’s Peace and Love (on the right), two good options for food and drinks on Little Harbor, Jost Van Dyke.

Little harbor is a small, well protected harbor with two bar/restaurants: Harris’s Place and Sydney’s Peace and Love. Both are worth stopping into, even if it’s just for a cold drink. But we also enjoyed the food at Harris’s and Cynthia, the owner was a real character! I’ve heard Sydney’s is also good. (But to be honest, the best food you are going to get is on the yacht! I suggest stopping by the restaurants ashore and have a cold drink and maybe an appetizer, then head back to your yacht for dinner. Then maybe have one dinner ashore during your charter at a restaurant recommended by your Captain.

Foxy’s Taboo bar and Restaurant, near Diamond Cay on the East end of Jost Van Dyke

One of the other stops on the tour was Foxy’s Taboo bar and restaurant. (This one is owned by the same Foxy that has the famous “Foxy’s Tamarind Bar” over on Great Harbor).

Lunch at Foxy’s Taboo. Do you know the Jimmy Buffet song “Cheeseburger in Paradise”? Well, it was NOT written here! But, they do serve a very good cheeseburger!

Foxy’s Taboo is in a very nice private location and I can vouch for their cheeseburgers. Unfortunately our whole group ordered the same thing so I can’t really comment on any of their other food!

Looking back at the “road” we just came down on part of our island tour! We got the “full” tour on this route including all of the back roads. (I don’t even think most of the island goats could have made it up and down some of these roads)!

After lunch our tour continued up (and I mean UP) into the hills of Jost Van Dyke. THIS is why we were in a 4 wheel drive vehicle! The views were fabulous but I’m not sure all of our group really appreciated the route we had to take to GET up to see those views! Anybody afraid of high places? (Keep your eyes closed)!

ENCORE anchored off Great Harbor, Jost Van Dyke.

(Foxy’s Tamarind Bar will be on the far left side of the beach in this photo – yes we stopped there on our BVI yacht charter too)!

The two photos above were taken from the same location so you can get an idea of how high up we were and the “road” conditions we endured to get there!

After the “high” island tour we all needed a break so we had our taxi driver drop us off at White Bay for a bit of beaching and some cool drinks. He would pick us up later to take us back to Great Harbor where ENCORE was anchored (and where our island tour began).

Soggy Dollar Bar, White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

Whew! That was an exciting “back” island tour! Time for a break and a cool drink. Hmmmm….let’s see, I’m at the Soggy Dollar Bar, home of the “Painkiller”, so I guess I’ll have a………..PAINKILLER!

Here’s the beach in front of the Soggy Dollar Bar.

There is a reef just offshore from the beach (maybe 50 – 75 feet from the beach) at White Bay so the smaller boats and tenders enter the reef and drop anchor behind it. Then they swim or wade to the beach.

Don’t worry, you won’t go thirsty in White Bay! If The Soggy Dollar is too “hopping” for you, just wander down the beach to one of several other spots including One Love, above or…..

White Bay is a great beach to stroll down as you have the gorgeous waters of the BVI at your footsteps and you are never very far from food and drink! Many of the guests on the beach had come via their tenders, you just have to be careful entering the reef which is just offshore. But hey, if you are on a private yacht like ENCORE, that’s not your problem! You don’t have to worry about any of that, all you have to do is take in the Sun, swim in the warm waters and enjoy a cool drink on the beach!

When you are ready to go, you could just radio your crew and they will come pick you up and take you back to your yacht! Yes, life on a private yacht charter is tough……..

Gertrude’s Beach Bar and Grill, White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. No we didn’t have Painkillers at ALL of these places! (But if we would have had a bit more time……).

Foxys Dock, Great Harbor, Jost Van Dyke

After White Bay and The Soggy Dollar Bar it’s back to Great Harbor via our taxi. We do have a few more “sights” to see in Great Harbor before we board ENCORE for the evening though.

It’s famous Foxy’s Tamarind Bar! I wonder if they have any painkillers?

Anybody that’s ever been to the BVI has heard of Foxy’s. Even if you haven’t been there you have probably heard of it! We checked it out during the day and decided we would come back that evening for drinks.

For those of you who like to golf, here’s the “country club” on Jost Van Dyke! You might want to pack your “sand wedge”! The course might be a bit “rough” but on the bright side, you might actually enjoy taking a dip in the “water hazard” in the background!

Great Harbor does have a few other bar/restaurants and shops other than Foxy’s so worth walking around to check things out during your BVI yacht charter.

For those of you who might want to have a dinner ashore, keep in mind the islands are on a “bit” different schedule than you are probably used to!

When you are in the Caribbean “time” is relative! Leave your “city” schedules back home when you are on vacation down here.

After cocktails at Foxy’s it’s back to ENCORE for dinner and preparation for our BVI yacht charter cruise over to Virgin Gorda the next morning.

Cathy’s “quiet time” on ENCORE.

If you are an early riser or just need to “get away” for a little “me” time, ENCORE has several nice areas you can “escape” to. Of course at least one stewardess will “track you down” no matter where (or when) you are on deck to make sure you don’t need a drink, snack, etc.! Crew members Cassie, Anais and Stephanie will take good care of you!

That’s ENCORE anchored off The Baths in Virgin Gorda.

Crew Morgan and Aaron shuttling the guests and gear to the beach at The Baths. Doesn’t that water look inviting? (Sorry you had to get wet Morgan! I bet Aaron in the tender is thinking “I wish I was the one that “had” to get wet!”. That water is NICE)!

The Baths is a great area to stretch your legs with a short hike, lay on the beach and catch some sun, do a little swimming or snorkel among the boulders. Really a “must see” when on a BVI yacht charter.

Me taking a photo of crew member Morgan taking a photo of Photographer Jim taking a photo of the “Models” on our hike through The Baths! (Talk about a “photo” session)!

And don’t forget to take your camera with you to The Baths! Lots of photo opportunities here!

After your “strenuous” hike, you can just kick back on the beach to “recuperate”. And if you get a bit warm from the sun, you can always get a cool drink in the shade at the small Poor Man’s bar just behind the person taking this picture!

After The Baths it’s back to ENCORE for lunch! Then the next stop is North Sound, Virgin Gorda. North Sound is home to The Bitter End Yacht Club, Biras Creek Resort and also Leverick Bay, all good places to stop and check out.

Welcome to the Bitter End Yacht Club!

The Bitter End Yacht Club is the largest resort in North Sound with a couple of restaurants and bars plus a store, accommodations, and water sports rentals including small sailboats. It’s a nice area to walk around, stop and have a cool drink, take some photos, etc.

One of the bars at the Bitter End Yacht Club. (Yes, they serve Painkillers here too)!

Here’s the freshly “raked” beach at the Bitter End Yacht Club. That is the Saba Rock Bar/Restaurant/Resort in the background.

In the photo you will see the Saba Rock Resort in the background. This resort takes up the whole small island of Saba Rock. They have a bar/restaurant (and they make a good Painkiller!) plus a few hotel rooms. Be sure to say “Hi” to the rescued Toco Toucans, Paco, Paz and Pepe, that they have on the grounds.

Here’s another view of the beach at the Bitter End Yacht Club. Doesn’t that look inviting?

The Bitter End has a couple bars, restaurants, a store, water sports rentals, etc. and by the time you check them all out and walk from one end of the resort to the other you might need a break. Fortunately they provide a few good “break” spots too!

The “dockmaster” at Biras Creek Resort.

“Yes, I accept gratuities. Especially the “tasty” kind!”

A view from Biras Creek Resort looking back toward the Bitter End (just around the point on the right).

That evening we also tendered over to Leverick Bay to watch the stilt dancers but unfortunately we were chatting so much at dinner that we were running a bit late so missed them! Oh well, since we were there we made the best of it and had a few cool drinks and listened to the live band. Eventually it was time to head back to ENCORE for the night.

Morgan getting one of the boards “warmed up” for us.

ENCORE also had some stand up paddle boards so the next morning we took Morgan and Aaron up on some lessons while we were anchored in North Sound. It was a bit breezy so we all decided “downwind” was the way to go! We were all rookies but Morgan and Aaron had us all up and going in no time! (And yes, it’s more exercise than it looks like)!

Terrence B Lettsome Airport, Beef Island (Tortola).

The next morning, after our paddleboard expedition, we cruised back over to a cove just North of the airport and dropped anchor for our last night aboard ENCORE. (BooooHooo)!

I would like to give a big “Thanks!” to Captain Roy, Stephanie, and the whole crew of ENCORE for having us aboard and for such a great time!

Ps – So, after all of our testing on our “Painkiller Tour”, who makes the best “Painkillers” in the BVI? Hmmmmm……….there were a LOT of good ones (maybe a few too many)! But, on the other hand we really didn’t have time to try ALL of the places that served Painkillers. So after much serious consideration it has been determined that …………..I think I need to go BACK for more RESEARCH! I’m sure I can find some volunteer “judges” for the next “Tour”!

329  Crewed Luxury Yachts for Charter in the Virgin Islands

Virgin Islands Yacht Charters

The British Virgin Islands (BVIs) and the U.S. Virgin Islands yacht charters are widely considered to be two of the world's finest cruising destinations. Having long attracted discerning travellers, the waters which surround the picturesque island chains boast outstanding views and enjoy a year-round warmth. Virgin Island yacht charters are particularly popular during the winter charter season, a stunning selection of mega yachts can regularly be seen cruising around this world-famous Caribbean island paradise.

British Virgin Islands luxury yacht charters

Commonly referred to as ‘the BVIs’,  British Virgin Island yacht rental vacations are popular for  sailing yacht  charters. Indeed, with steady trade winds, calm waters, and bright blue skies, there a few places better to unfurl a sail and enjoy the experience of being carried along by nature. As well as being a paradise for the intrepid sailor, the BVIs are also a perfect destination to explore from the comfort of a motor yacht . The vast array of untouched bays and dive sites, for example, are all easily accessible to motor yachts no matter how large they may be. Typically, those visiting the area on board a yacht will also make time to enjoy the mainland attractions found on Tortola. The largest of the British Virgin Islands, this destination boasts a remarkable selection of restaurants, bars, and boutique stores. Equally popular amongst the SuperyachtSet, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke are home to well-equipped harbours and suitably positioned anchorages.

US Virgin Islands luxury yacht charters

Lined with white sand beaches which look out across cobalt blue waters, renting a yacht in the US Virgin Islands  is simply bliss. Just as revered as their British neighbours, the major islands here include St Croix, St Thomas , and St John. Usually, superyacht charters in the U.S. Virgin Islands will begin and end at St Thomas as the main port is located here. The capital of the islands, Charlotte Amalie, is also located on St Thomas and is home to a range of outstanding bars and restaurants. With numerous historic towns, national parks, and romantic retreats found around the surrounding islands, there’s plenty to see and do in this part of the world. Ideal for families as well as groups of friends, a charter vacation in the U.S. Virgin Islands can be styled to meet the needs of any party configuration.

Yacht charter itineraries in the Virgin Islands

A yacht charter itinerary in the Virgin Islands can combine both the US and British Virgin Island. The pristine beauty of St. John is a popular starting point for charters here, and will include stunning hotspots like Norman Island, Tortola, Peter's Island, Virgin Gorda and North Sound.

Planning your luxury yacht charter in the Virgin Islands

When planning a private yacht charter vacation in either the BVIs or the U.S Virgin Islands, consider what kind of activities you’ll be keen to try out. If you’re interested in snorkelling, for example, you might want to think about heading out to the British Virgin Islands. On the other hand, if you’re more inclined towards hiking trails and untouched beaches, the U.S Virgin Islands might be a more appropriate choice. To find out more about the incredible possibilities on offer, be sure to take a look at our example itineraries here .

Chartering a private yacht in the Virgin Islands

For more information about renting a luxury charter yacht in the Virgin Islands, you'll need to get in touch with your preferred Yacht Charter Broker . They will be able to help plan your dream itinerary, combining your desires with recommendations about the best time to visit this idyllic destination.

CAPTAIN ALEX & CHEF/MATE CHARLI

Alex is a dynamic and supportive ship captain of Irish origins and has been playing rugby and as well sailing competitively for 15 years with St. George Yacht club. He has been the outright winner of most cruiser racing events in the UK and Ireland. His experience includes over 30,000 charter miles with guests and as well 30,000 delivery miles on racing yachts and private sailing yachts. Alex has attended a German primary school and thus has spoken the language for many years. During his studies, he has traveled throughout Europe, America, Asia, and Australia. He has worked at numerous private events as a cocktail waiter which makes him competent in guest handling. Tailored to fit your special needs and wishes, his services will make you discover the freedom only a boat can offer. Whether you are looking to enjoy a laid-back day on the beach, jump into an active holiday, indulge in the local fine wine and dining, discover the culture, appreciate nature or just do nothing at all – he will help make it happen!

Charli is an outgoing chef who adores providing culinary adventures for guests while traveling the world. Raised on a small farm in Georgia, she melds her authentic Southern roots with the culinary knowledge gained from years of travel and cooking in dozens of countries and environments. Before becoming a professional chef, she studied chemistry and fashion design in college, managed an NYC specialty coffee shop, created a women’s clothing line, and continues to operate a successful e-commerce clothing business. Now she is thrilled to feed you. A woman of many talents, Charli discovered her love of cooking on boats, while on holiday from work in 2015 and decided to take on a new career challenge. After many flights and countries, including Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, Italy, French Polynesia, San Juan Islands, the Bahamas, and the Virgin Islands, she has gained the experience to provide you with an exceptional food experience on charter.

She is talented with specialized diets, including gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and keto/paleo, and is happy to provide guests with customized menus.

STEWARDESS MICHELLE

Growing up sailing in the British Virgin Islands with her parents, Michelle has spent much of her time on the water. The sea is her home and she’s always happy to teach the guests new skills aboard. She has completed over 6000 miles of offshore sailing between Europe, the Caribbean, and the North East coast of the U.S. Sailing in the Caribbean and motor yachting in the North East US contributed to her desire to work in the industry. She has completed 5 yachting seasons as a chef in the Virgin Islands, Bahamas, and the Mediterranean. While she will always have a passion for cooking, she is excited for a new chapter as a Deckhand/Stew, bringing other skills to the table.

With a background in event planning, Michelle is proud to go above and beyond to enhance the experience her guests are looking for. She is excited to plan fun activities, themed dinners, cocktails, and overall ambiance for her guests to make their holiday perfect.

Aside from sailing, Michelle is a certified free diver and yoga instructor. Teaching is her passion and she is thrilled to offer morning flows and meditations to the guests. Whether the students are new to their practice or looking for something more advanced, she is happy to create a class around what they desire to get out of their holiday. In her free time, she enjoys her own practice, as well as travel; eating and drinking her way through new countries and cultures.

Thank you for an unforgettable trip. The yoga, food and excursions were fantastic. Thanks for the perfect sailing and island hopping. We hope to return and see you again in the future. Thanks again for a great trip.
Went into the week with no expectations, and the warmth and professionalism and the crew made it true "bucket-list" experience. I can't imagine a better experience in a scenic part of the world I had never been to before. I really felt catered-to and each of the crew went above and beyond to make our experience an indulgent week of amazing views and food. Can't think of enough adjectives to praise our crew!
The first ones to enjoy this beautiful boat! What a crew! What a place! What a great time!
(Review is from crew’s previous yacht) This crew showed us how a great captain and chef make the trip special. Thank you both for being extremely professional, but also making us feel we made two great new friends. Memories for a lifetime! Joe
(Review is from crew’s previous yacht) What a wonderful week - it's a beautiful place to visit and a beautiful way to see it! And the crew made it perfect! Thank you so much for an incredible experience - everything I wanted it to be and more! If either of you are ever near Sunset Beach, NC look us up! Thank you! Sue
(Review is from crew’s previous yacht) Thank you both for making this a trip of a lifetime for the five of us! Certainly, any yacht owner will be lucky to have you both on their team! Calm seas to you both: Joe, Cindy, Sue, Gary, Cherryl

My family and I sailed with a group of 7 other friends for a week on the catamaran, Sol Liv, captained by James along with Robyn who was also the chef. We had an amazing vacation. James and Robyn are great people. They know the BVIs well and took us to so many beautiful spots. Plus, Robyn is a very talented chef. Our vacation was truly relaxing with James and Robyn in charge of all the details. The boat is amazing as well. Truly a floating hotel. We will be talking about this vacation for the rest of our lives.

Best vacation experience ever! Shawn was incredible with the booking process and answered all our crazy questions along the way promptly! Tony & Claudia made our trip truly special. They couldn't have been more accommodating to our group. The food was absolutely fabulous and exceeded our expectations. They were kind, gracious hosts who anticipated our every need. They served with a smile and are a terrific team. They felt like family by the end of the week. We will come back only if we can sail with Tony & Claudia again!

Spectacular once-in-a-lifetime vacation with Voyage Charters and Captain Chris & Chef Jena. Voyage emerged as the clear leader after looking at several charter companies in the area, and were well worth the slight extra expense. Our 59' cat, Miles Away, was immaculate and comfortable, with far more than enough space for our three families. We had considered going without the captain and chef, and were so glad we didn't -- Chris showed us so much more of the islands than we would've been able to attempt ourselves, and made the entire thing effortless and 100% stress-free. His local knowledge (he grew up there) was a bonus. And Jena's meals were impeccable. She not only easily adapted to some special requests we had, but made a birthday breakfast for my daughter. Everything she cooked was tasty and creative, and she was both professional and fun to be around. We all miss them both & wish them the best!

Regarding our trip on 'Sol Liv' in May, 2022, we had a wonderful time with Capt. Tony Cook and his lovely wife Claudia. They took care of our every need and blended in immediately with our group of twelve. All of us were thrilled with the exceptional level of care. Captain Tony coached, bartended, entertained and dozens of other tasks with an eye on customer service. He clearly loves his wife. Claudia had delicious and creative meals and abundant midday treats for us. She made special dishes for dietary concerns. She is the quiet center in the swirl of activity around the boat. They are wonderful people and we were fortunate to spend time with them. Certainly one of our best trips to the islands!

Our vacation booked with Voyage Charters was truly an amazing experience. The vessel, Out of Office, was impeccably clean and well appointed. The bedrooms were cocoon-like ( I swear I haven't slept that well since before having children ), the linens were wonderful too. If you are booking a trip be sure to request Captain Blade and First Mate, Chef and DJ Jena! Given the circumstances there was no doubt that we were going to have a good time. However, with these two as our crew our experience was greatly enhanced. I appreciate their knowledge, professionalism and most off all their wit and candor. Thank you Blade for taking us to such beautiful locations and thank you Jena for taking 11 people on a delightful epicurean adventure 3 times a day!

Captain James Smyly and Robyn Ellor chef extraordinaire accompanied us on No Regrets. We will never, ever forget this incredible trip. From the scenic sails to the five star meals shipped up by Chef Robyn, we couldn’t have asked for a better team to help us have the best vacation ever. They planned a fantastic, found us the best mooring spots, had tons of insider island knowledge, and were just all around the best. Thanks James and Robyn and Voyage!

Denzie and Ryan were absolutely amazing on our trip on the Sol Liv! Truly couldn’t have asked for a better trip between Ryan’s guidance on activities on the islands and denzie’s incredible meals. We are hoping to return as soon as we can and definitely hope to get them on our boat again too!

Congratulations on a superb rebuild! We had a splendid week on Secret Oasis with old and new friends, and the best crew ever. My 7th charter, and it was perfect. Tony and Claudia made the trip wonderful, and as always, I will recommend Voyage for the charter or charters of a lifetime.

We just returned from an 11-guest 6-night BVI trip on the 65’ powercat “Out of Office” (Voyage Charters out of Soper's Hole in Tortola). Our captain was Blade Goodall and our chef was Nia Mora. We have done these trips before and Captain Blade and Chef Nia were by far the best we have ever had. Captain Blade was engaging, knowledgeable, funny, and flexible. We made a number of adjustments to our trip on the fly and he was very accommodating. All of the pre-planned excursion details (Mokes and dinner reservations on Anegada, scuba diving at Virgin Gorda, etc.) were perfect. The unscheduled impromptu activities (e-foils at Virgin Gorda, snorkeling, tubing, water skiing, fishing, bar hopping, etc.) were amazing and Captain Blade always took the time to ensure everyone was having fun. Chef Nia was creative, engaging, and highly talented. Every meal was fantastic and our group of 11 never went hungry! One of the highlights was Chef Nia preparing the 50-pound King Mackerel that Captain Blade helped us catch on the crossing from Anegada to Jost Van Dyke. With zero notice, Chef Nia cancelled her previously planned dinner and prepared an incredible fresh fish dinner complete with homemade teriyaki sauce, watermelon salsa, and perfect rice. This was a lot more work for her but she did it with a smile! Both Captain Blade and Chef Nia worked hard from sunrise to well after sunset each day ensuring that the trip was perfect for all 11 of our guests. We all had tears in our eyes when we said goodbye to them but will definitely request them on a future trip!

Great time with Tate and Justine. We just finished our charter with Tate (captain) and Justine (chef). If was a great vacation with Tate and Justine. They were extremely nice and helped us decide on what plans to make each day. Tate was extremely knowledgeable of the boat and the islands. He grew up in Jost Van Dyke and was able to give us good advice on what to do. My husband liked that Tate was always calm. Justine was a fantastic chef. She made sure our food met the information we provided ahead of time. Every meal was well thought out and delicious. Thank you both for a wonderful experience. The Voyage 520 boat was very nice. I would suggest maybe a couple more bean bags up front for people to lay when the boat is at sail.

Explore the Stunning Virgin Islands

Travelers diverge as they make their choices – there is no set itinerary. Depending on where you start and whether the tradewinds are slightly north of east or slightly south, you could start with the southern route heading to the outer islands of Norman, Peter, Cooper, or Salt. If you sail up the north shore you may choose Cane Garden Bay, Sandy Spit, or Camenoe. Still to explore are Trellis Bay, Virgin Gorda, and onto Anegada. With more than 60 small islands and bays, you may return again and again to visit old favorites and explore new hideaways.

Elysium at harbour - night

Elysium , a majestic Privilege 615 cat, has three cabins, each with an ensuite to define comfort afloat. Attention to detail and elegant woodwork are the hallmark of this yacht. Elysium caters for the fun-loving and adventurous, with vibrant crew, Matt and Tara, who have more than ten years’ experience at the helm. With a collective wealth of knowledge of watersports, food, and exploring, they look forward to welcoming you on board!

A Distinctive Destination  – Yacht Charter BVI

Islands strung like a necklace curve over 35 miles from St. Thomas, USVI  in the west  into the British Virgin Islands ending at Anegada. The eastern tip of the British Virgin Islands join the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south. Nature’s bounty has gifted the Virgin Islands with islands to shelter the sailor from large ocean swells and provide numerous options for calm harbors, white sand beaches and reefs that can be easily spotted in the bright tropical sun.

Start at Trellis Bay, Beef Island Airport in the heart of the island chain and head north to Anegada, after a stop at North Sound, to find deserted swathes of empty beaches. Leave your signature footprints in the sand. Dine and dance barefoot under the stars, it is all part of your unique experience of the outer islands.

Paddle boarding, snorkeling, or scuba diving are all optional activities from your floating vacation in the Virgins. Perfect for sailing, never out of sight of land with your next stop just a short distance away, the Virgins define easy living.

This Lagoon 62 has 4 queen cabins, lounging areas and a fly bridge with a wine fridge. 3 crew enjoy regular rave reviews for both delectable cuisine and lots of energetic watersports activity. Silver service, sailing and the sea will help you de-stress, relax and recharge.
