Seattle’s opening day: kicking off emerald city’s boating season.

Post by Jackie Au - Published on 04/26/22 12:30 PM

View of the Puget Sound and Space Needle

From the historic Ballard Locks to the hundreds of islands off the coast of Puget Sound, Seattle is a boater’s dream. So whether you’re looking to enjoy the quiet of a day on the Sound or explore the historic maritime culture of the city, Seattle has plenty to offer. With summer fast approaching, we’re highlighting three events that will help you kickoff an eventful boating season in Seattle.

Seattle Yacht Club’s Opening Day

Although boaters can enjoy the waters of the Sound, Lake Washington, and Lake Union year-round, the summers serve as the peak boating season in Seattle. With temperatures ranging in the low to mid-70s, boaters can expect comfortable and gorgeous weather while on the water. Seattle Yacht Club’s century-old Opening Day celebration marks the start of this season, which they host on the first Saturday of May. The event, known as the nation’s largest regional celebration of water, kicks off with a bang, with a parade beginning at noon, the blast of a cannon, and the raising of the Montlake Bridge.

If you'd prefer to book your a slip or mooring on Dockwa's network, you can dock at nearby Nautical Landing Marina , Salmon Bay Marine Center , or Elliott Bay Marina to take part in the festivities.

shutterstock_1393489424

There are several regattas, one being the iconic Windermere Cup and two featuring the University of Washington’s  men’s and women’s rowing teams. The two teams take on international challengers and other high-ranked collegiate teams. Spectators can watch this event from the Montlake Cut, with parking available at the University of Washington.

After the regattas, the celebration continues with the boat parade. Again, thousands of boaters and spectators gather to participate in the festivities. The parade is perhaps the most recognizable feature of the celebration, and hundreds of boaters take to the water to showcase their boats. However, this is no ordinary boat parade, as the best part of the parade is that boaters decorate their vessels following the year’s theme! This year’s theme is “The Roaring’ 20’s,” so keep an eye out for some fun Gatsby-inspired decorations as boaters compete to win the festival trophy for the best-dressed boat.

Seafair Summer Festival

Summertime also marks the beginning of the exciting Seafair celebrations. As the largest festival in the Pacific Northwest, over 2 million people enjoy this event, including races, air shows, community block parties, and other fun family events. The annual not-for-profit festival lasts over ten weeks and consists of seven official events and 25 community-hosted events. The seven key events are:

Seafair Summer 4th

Milk Carton Derby

Seafair Triathlon & Kids Triathlon

Seafair Torchlight Parade

Torchlight 5K & 8K Run

Seafair Fleet Week

Seafair Weekend Festival

The Seafair Summer 4th is the July 4th celebration in Seattle. Boaters and spectators alike gather in Lake Union to enjoy the spectacular fireworks show. It was recognized by USA TODAY as one of the nation’s best fireworks displays.

The Milk Carton Derby , hosted in Green Lake, is a fun family outing of ingenuity and creativity. The race consists of contestants racing homemade boats made out of milk and juice cartons! Fans can enjoy the silly event from the shoreline and watch contestants compete in creatively decorated and hilariously fun homemade milk carton vessels. In addition to bragging rights, contestants race to win up to $250 and a chance to be crowned as Milk Carton Derby champions.

Seafair’s Fleet Week celebrates the brave men and women who serve in the armed forces. Consisting of various events and parades, Fleet Week allows spectators to explore Navy and Coast Guard vessels and ships that carry our everyday cargo.

Seattle’s Duck Dodge

Last on our list is the Duck Dodge . The Duck Dodge is an unofficial and loosely organized regatta and Seattle tradition. Every Tuesday night in the summer, over a hundred boaters take to Lake Union to race for the ultimate prize, a duck sticker. The race consists of several laps, Mario Kart-style, with boats of varying sizes, speeds, and types gliding across the lake. The event is free and open to the public, with a ridicul ous set of rules, the top being “no hitting.” They intentionally highlight it in five of the 12 rules. Every race has a different theme, with participants engaging in good, lighthearted fun.

As warmer weather and blue skies begin to peak through the clouds, it’s cause for celebrations and summertime activities in Seattle. From the summer festivities o f the Openin g Day ceremony, Seafair, and the Duck Dodge, boaters will have plenty to do in their time visiting Seattle. Although the festivals are a great way to have some fun in Emerald City, the fun doesn’t stop there. Booking with Dockwa ensures boater’s a season packed with fun and a hassle-free mooring and docking experience.

Navigating the Emerald City Seas: Yacht Maintenance Tips with Oaksmith Yachts

Introduction: Seattle, known for its stunning waterfront and maritime culture, is an ideal playground for yacht enthusiasts. Whether you're a seasoned yachter or a newcomer to the yachting world, maintaining your vessel is crucial for both safety and optimal performance. In this guide, we'll explore essential tips and practices to keep your yacht in top-notch condition while navigating the waters of Seattle.

Regular Cleaning and Inspection: Seattle's unique marine environment can expose your yacht to saltwater, algae, and other elements that can take a toll on its appearance and functionality. Regular cleaning is essential to prevent corrosion and damage. Inspect the hull, deck, and rigging for any signs of wear, and address issues promptly to avoid more extensive damage.

Engine Maintenance: A well-maintained engine is the heart of any yacht. Schedule regular engine checks, change the oil, replace filters, and ensure all components are in working order. Seattle's variable weather conditions, from rainy days to occasional snow, make it vital to protect your engine from the elements and perform routine maintenance to prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Antifouling: The Puget Sound's rich ecosystem can lead to the growth of marine organisms on the hull of your yacht. Applying antifouling paint every couple years and checking for touch ups yearly helps prevent the accumulation of barnacles, algae, and other creatures, reducing drag and fuel consumption. Be sure to follow environmental guidelines when selecting and applying antifouling products.

Electrical System: Yachts rely heavily on electrical systems for navigation, communication, and onboard amenities. Regularly inspect and maintain your yacht's electrical components, including wiring, batteries, and navigation lights. Keep an eye on the connections and address any corrosion promptly.

Rigging and Sails:   If you're a sailor you have a bit extra work to do! Seattle's winds can be both exhilarating and challenging for sailors. Ensure that your yacht's rigging is in excellent condition, checking for signs of wear or damage. Inspect the sails for tears or fraying and consider routine sail maintenance to extend their lifespan.

Safety Equipment: Safety should be a top priority for any yacht owner. Check and update your safety equipment regularly, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, flares, and first aid kits. Seattle's unpredictable weather makes it essential to be prepared for any situation while out on the water.

Winterization: Seattle experiences colder temperatures during the winter months, which can affect your yacht if not properly prepared. Consider winterizing your vessel by protecting it from freezing temperatures, removing water from the engine, pressure from freshwater hoses and securing it against winter storms.

Conclusion: Owning a yacht in Seattle is a rewarding experience, but it comes with the responsibility of proper maintenance. By following these tips, you'll ensure that your yacht remains in top condition, allowing you to enjoy the breathtaking waters of Puget Sound for years to come. Happy sailing!

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

emerald city yacht club

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.
