BB 10 meter, 1984 sailboat

1983 Borresen BB10 fractional rig sloop

$13,500.

Borresen BB10-FRACTIONAL-RIG-SLOOP image

Totally charming and very simple diesel powered Danish-built day sailer, same family almost since new. Sassafras spent most of her life back East (Annapolis and Vermont), was moved to CA in 2016 and is being offered for sale for the first time since. The BB looks like a classic wood sailboat from the 1920s but it's a fiberglass hull with a modern underbody so you have the best of moth worlds (and note that it has a ballast-to-displacement ratio of 54% so is very sfiff which is what you want on the Bay!).

Single cylinder 10hp Yanmar diesel just serviced (and most little day sailers are powered by outboards!), roller furler head sail with 95% jib, sails and teak decks in very good shape; Sassafra s is the only BB10 for sale in the U.S. at present and must be seen to be appreciated.

Price just significantly reduced and offers encouraged.

A Soling with the cabin house of a Dragon? The BB 10 Meter is the creation of Borge Borreson and his son, Anders, who designed and originally built the boat in Denmark. In the past, the Borresons built Solings ( one of which won the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics) and Dragons, and the exposure to the bracing classes made the younger Borreson keen enough to obtain his degree in naval architecture. Then they had the idea of producing a boat of their own design, a performance-oriented family racer that was easy to sail. This boat is a natural progression for men who have been producing Dragons and Solings, and they have managed to keep that aesthetic appeal in their new creation.

Many of you have seen and some have had the pleasure of sailing a Soling, so it may be helpful to use the Olympic keelboat as a comparison:

First, enlarge a Soling about 20 per cent (enlarging a boat is not this straightforward in yacht design, but this is just an exercise). This boat now has the same freeboard and length as the BB-10, but the Borresons have produced a yacht with less beam. And you thought that a blown-up Soling looked slim. The sailing stability of a boat is always an interesting characteristic to study, and from the designer's point of view one of the most challenging to tune to perfection.

The BB-10 has a lot of ballast (54 per cent of its weight is lead) which will help offset its very narrow beam. Our overgrown Soling has about the same percentage of ballast, and you have to perform all kinds of outrageous hiking maneuvers to keep it sailing upwind at peak performance. Mom and Dad don't have the knees for that kind of stuff anymore. So how does the BB-10 do it? Two important factors: (1) It has enough extra displacement to give the hull a greater righting moment, and (2) it has a smaller sail-plan.

The sail-plan arrangement is very sensible. For those super light-air days you can pull out the big genoa, but often the little lapper will be all that is required to scoot around the lake, and you won't be, overpowered. To get you into those shallow spots for lunch, Borreson has kept the draft down to four feet, 10 inches.

The resulting keel's aspect ratio is a little low for efficiency, but has lots of area. The sailing characteristics resulting from combining that keel with the narrow hull should be minimal leeway and very little chance of stalling the keel-even coming out of one of those tacks when your crew, in the heat of the moment, has wrapped the sheet counterclockwise around the winch.

Their brochure states that "standing headroom is only four feet, nine inches, though sitting headroom is ample." I'm not sure that "standing headroom" is the correct term here, but we will let the figures speak for themselves. The interior is not meant to be lush. It's a bit like camping in a fiberglass tent. There are settee berths for sitting or snoozing and a galley module that pulls out from under the cockpit when required. Just forward of the mast are several substantial built-in lockers, and forward of those a large V berth.

With more than a hundred boats sailing in Europe, this design is not new. According to Bob Scharf of Scandinavian Yachts in Annapolis, Maryland, the bid to expand the BB- lO's market began with a brief period of production in the United States (about 20 were built) but they are now moving their molds to Whitby Boat Works in Ontario.

The Canadian dollar, combined with Whitby's quality construction, makes the move look attractive, and if all goes as planned, the first boat off the line should be slipping into the water just about now.

Steve Killing, Canadian Yachting, July 1984

BB-10 is a 32 ′ 9 ″ / 10 m monohull sailboat designed by Børresen Brothers and built by Børresen Bådebyggeri starting in 1977.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The BB10 is constructed of fiberglass sandwich with balsam core in the deck, cabin, and hull. The original teak deck was removed when the boat was upgraded in 2011-13. The spade rudder and low draft keel combined with the long and narrow lines of the BB 10 give it the appearance of a much larger boat. But with a displacement of 4,956 pounds it is still trailerable. The BB10 has a high aspect rig, designed to carry a main, spinnaker, jib, genoa, or gennaker. Reefing can be done quickly and by one person. The long cockpit and comfortably fit a crew of four plus the helms-person.

The BB10 is for the sailing purist. This boat was designed with a disregard for ratings and attention to speed. Under the PHRF, for example, the BB10 is rated very high at 120. This reflects the yachts spectacular performance potential. Speeds of over 15 knots downwind have been recorded frequently. It is for those who enjoy most the thrill of moving through the water efficiently, using only the wind. Acceleration is incredible and it sails with astonishing speed, a minimum of fuss and a great sense of security. The BB10 is a head turner and other vessels alter course to come near and ask questions.

This is a two-owner boat, one of about 150 built. An architect in San Francisco and his sailing partner purchased her new in 1982. The current owner purchased the boat in 2011 and undertook over $30,000 repairs and upgrades. She was re-launched in 2013 and has been used for day sailing with family and friends around Santa Cruz. The current owner has serviced the boat regularly and maintained at a high level, including repair of blisters below the water line, stripping the bottom paint and applying two layers of epoxy barrier plus two coats of Trinidad 3, replacing the prop shaft and cutlass bearing, and other maintenance in 2019.

bb10 sailboat

  • Condition: Used
  • Make: Børresen
  • Model: BB10 metre
  • Type: Sailboat
  • Location: San Diego, California, United States

Description

  • I have three mains. One Pentex, one Kevla, and the black sail that is fancy carbon fiber trick material.
  • Jibs are 100 (Kevlar) only use in heavy air, 130 Pentex, 150 light Pentex, 155 that is carbon fiber like the main.
  • Two mast head spinnakers, a reaching one and a downwind spinnaker . Also a mast asymmetrical sail. A fractional spinnaker for heavy air.
  • The Pentax sails are fairly old but are still in good shape. They are pretty heavy and we dont use them to race much in the light air we have in San Diego.
  • The carbon sails are from Elliot Patison sails in Newport beach.

Last haul out was May of 2017.

Someone asked about when the last survey was done: I had the boat surveyed when I bought it in San Francisco by Peter Minkowitz. Included is a photo of the boat when I got it from San Francisco (chevy truck with boat on trailer) - you can get an idea of how much work I put into restoring and rebuilding the boat -.

Sorry - no trades, no swaps - I have too many projects now, looking to simplify.

Relisting as the fellow who was going to buy it had the sale of his boat fall through. Then the stockmarket took a nosedive and he had some of his fun money dry up. Yadda yadda yadda -- you get the drill. If you are serious, hit me up. No keel kickers please, serious folks only. Thanks very much.

Someone asked if it has a sink/stove: No, it does not. There was an option to have one pull out on the side of one of the side seats (from the cockpit) but the guy I got it from took it out way back when for better balance, less weight, and frankly since it was not very useful or needed.

Another asked who owned the boat in San Francisco: It was owned by a psychologist guy named Bob, who was a member at Tiberon Yacht Club and the boats name was Aventura III. If you know the boat from those days, you will know how much work and rebuilding I have put into it. I literally have over $70,000 in receipts into this boat. I probably got a little carried away but its a fun boat, easy to do.

Some info on the builder. Good news is they are still in business but better if you happen to live in denmark. I believe the Borreson Soling 27' is raced nearly world wide. Sailboats built by Brresen Bdebyggeri by year on Sailboatdata.com The description of the BB 10 says there were only 150 of them built which might help explain the high prices. BB-10 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com Looks like a pretty fast boat to me, and nice.

This type of boat (long and narrow) is quite popular in Scandinavia. There are plenty of similar boats, to very affordable prices. Some known similar danish designs are Aphrodite 101 / Bianca 101 / Elvström 101 (same design) Ylva Molich X (not an exhaustive list) These all stems from the 70/80-ties, more modern examples are eg the Luffe(s), Faurby, ... These kind of boats are even more popular in Sweden, where there are many different designs. Known from the same period are the Swede 30 (S-30), Swede 55, ad later on Swede 40 / 45. Also Wasa had a series 30 -- 55. Peter Norlin designed some in a similar way, as the Avance 33 / 36, Omega 42 (OK, we are getting bigger). There is also, from the same time, the Cayenne 42 and the corrsponding Carrera Helmsman. The more usual Helmsmans are Lady and Senorita (both similar to the BB10) ... list is long. Many of these had their popuarity peak 30 years ago, prices are low today. OK it is far from the US! Some of these can probably be found also in the US, otherwise there is always the possibility in buying in Scandinavia and get it transported to the US. /J

I just found out that they still build them! Price around 100,000 USD There are 6 used on the market in DK right now in the range from 30,000 to 60,000 USD

While this is true, most people around here still see the BB 10 as the most beautiful of them all. It is a fantastic sailboat and amazing to look at. Just kind of perfect. (For sailing.. not much room in there ) Click to expand...

Check out the Canadian built "Abbot" boats, in particular the 33 and 36 in the link below: Sailboats built by Abbott Boats Inc. by year on Sailboatdata.com .. not quite as 'sexy', the venerable Contessa 32 http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1414 These are not daysailers, the Abbots are somewhat atypical cruiser/racers of the time, (narrow beam, frac rigs) and the Contessa is a serious cruising boat with a strong reputation.

Wow! Brings back memories! We had BB10 US1, bought in 1981. She was from Denmark and from what the moulds were made to produce them in Florida. Previously brought from Denmark was DK 50. Went to weather like crazy! 70* or less between tacks. Other boats swore we were sailing straight into the wind. I was spoiled forever. She needed little wind to sail, but did get wet when it blew. Once in a good breeze, a Hobie 16 couldn't overtake us, so turned away.

Classic30

They certainly are fast boats. There's a BB10 for sale at my club here (a least I think it's still for sale.. it's been sitting there for 2-3 years now). The owner is our club captain who decided one day to buy a brand-new Archambault A31 to try to stay ahead of the Adams 10's in our club racing series. It's in pristine racing condition and stored on the hard under a full cover. He certainly wasn't asking anything like $100k for it, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it - other than it's not as fast as a new A31.. or a first-rate Adams 10. PM me if you'd like the details.

If anyone is interested in buying my BB10, I am in San Diego - really well cared for boat - dark blue, white trim full compliment of sails, roller furling, and a saildrive added. $39k

The best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet (we analyzed 2,000 boats to find out)

What are the best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet?

Last year we analyzed 2,000 offshore designs to bring you a list of the most popular bluewater sailboats .

However, most people are searching for a boat in a particular size class. So, we decided to do a double-click and look at the best sailboats under 40 feet for offshore sailing.

If you’re interested in an even smaller boat, there are plenty of great options under 30 feet in our list of the best small sailboats for sailing around the world .

The characteristics that make a sailboat a bluewater sailboat are a hotly debated topic, so we wanted to use real-world data and find out what cruisers are using to cross oceans and sail around the world.

We looked at 2,000 boats that entered the Pacific Puddle Jump  (PPJ) over the last 12 years. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the PPJ, it’s a rally that crosses the Pacific ocean.  We took part in 2017 and had a ball!

Also, if you’re looking to buy one of the bluewater boats on this list, you might want to check out our post on the best places to buy used boats and how to find free or cheap boats for sale .

Just be aware that a bluewater boat isn’t necessarily offshore-ready. Our top five picks are all older boats and will undoubtedly require work.

Every cruiser we know made substantial repairs and additions before going offshore: adding watermakers , life rafts, solar panels, and more.

Also, always have a boat inspected by a professional and accredited marine surveyor before buying it or taking it offshore.

So, without further preamble, here are the best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet.

The best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet

1. the westsail 32.

Westsail 32 sailboat

The Westsail 32 is one of the most iconic bluewater cruisers. Built by the Westsail Corporation in the 1970s, this plucky, small sailboat has developed a cult following over the decades. Since 2009, 19 have set out to cross the Pacific in the PPJ rallies.

The Westsail 32 is known for its sturdy construction, seaworthiness, and classic looks. In fact, it set the standard for what a real bluewater cruiser should look like. In 1973, the Westsail 32 was featured in Time magazine and inspired many Americans to go cruising.

Though popular, this boat has earned the unenviable nickname “ Wetsnail 32″, a reference to its poor ability to windward and sluggish performance. But Westsail 32 owners don’t care that they won’t be winning any races.

What the boat lacks in speed it makes up for in classic looks and excellent offshore cruising characteristics. Many owners have crossed oceans and circumnavigated the globe in their Westsail 32s.

2. Tayana 37

Tayana 37 sailboat

The Tayana 37 is a wildly popular Bob Perry design. It first rolled off the production line in 1976 and there are now several hundred of them sailing the world’s oceans.

Above the waterline, the Tayana 37 boasts beautiful traditional lines. However, Perry wanted to avoid the unenviable (read: sluggish) performance characteristics, associated with double-enders.

So, he designed the Tayana 37 with a cut-away long keel and moderate displacement, maintaining the classic look, while achieving reasonable performance.

The Tayana 37 has a devoted following of offshore enthusiasts. Since 2009, 12 Tayana 37s have set out to cross the Pacific in the PPJ rallies.

Read more about the Tayana 37 in this Practical Sailor review .

3. Hans Christian 38T

Black and white photo of Hans Christian 38T Sailboat

The Hans Christian 38T is a full-keeled, heavy displacement bluewater boat with a long bowsprit and a clipper bow, giving it a distinctive appearance. It was first introduced in 1976 and was produced until the early 1990s.

If you hadn’t already guessed, the “T” in the name stands for “Traditional”. Like many boats on this list, it takes a cue from Crealock’s famous Westsail 32 which sparked a craze in the 1970s and 80s for Scandinavian-style doubled-enders.

It’s gained a reputation as a capable and seaworthy cruising yacht. Many owners have crossed oceans and completed circumnavigations in Hans Christian 38Ts.

By our count, eight Hans Christian 38Ts have participated in Pacific Puddle Jump rallies over the last 12 years.

4. Island Packet 380

Drawing of Island Packet 380 sailboat

I’ve always considered Island Packets the Rolls-Royce of the bluewater boat world. Their distinctive cream-colored topsides make them easy to spot and their robust bluewater construction makes them the envy of many far-flung anchorages.

Designed by Bob Johnson and built by Island Packet Yachts in Florida, the Island Packet 380 was first introduced in 1998. 169 were built before 2004, over which time it gained a reputation as a capable and comfortable offshore cruiser.

Having been built in the ’90s and early 2000s, this is a relatively newer boat. In many ways, it offers the best of both worlds, a classic-looking boat with all the modern cruising conveniences.

The Island Packet 380 design prioritizes safety and stability. It also has several offshore features including standard twin bow rollers, a divided anchor locker, and ample storage for cruising gear.

Life below deck is comfortable too. With a 13-foot (4 meter) beam there’s plenty of room for liveaboard amenities.

The Island Packet 380 is a popular choice for long-distance cruising and offshore passages. Since 2009, six Island Packet 380s have set out to cross the Pacific in PPJ rallies.

Read more about the Island Packet 380 in this review by Yachting Monthly .

5. Ingrid 38

Drawing of Ingrid 38 sailboat

The Ingrid 38 is a double-ended sailboat that was originally designed for wood construction in 1938.

In 1971, Bluewater Boat Co. began building a fiberglass version. The design proved hugely popular and more than 140 were built.

With a full keep and heavy displacement, the Ingrid 38 epitomizes the traditional bluewater cruiser. Yet, it remains a well-loved design today. Since 2009, six Ingrid 38s have set out to cross the Pacific in PPJ rallies.

Man bitten by crocodile in Florida Everglades after capsizing sailboat, falling in water

H OMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — A 68-year-old man fell of a sailboat at a marina in the Florida Everglades and was bitten by a crocodile as he tried to swim to shore, authorities said.

The rare crocodile bite occurred Sunday afternoon at the Flamingo Marina in Everglades National Park and left the man, who was visiting the park, with a laceration to one leg that required medical attention, the National Park Service said.

The Everglades is one of the largest wetlands in the world and according to the National Wildlife Foundation, is the only place in the world where American crocodiles and American alligators co-exist. There are about 1.8 million alligators in Florida but only 2,000 crocodiles.

The man capsized his sailboat in the marina basin and was trying to swim to land with his boat when witnesses saw him go under the water, officials said. Park rangers responded and treated the cut on the man’s leg before he was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

No further information was released on the man's condition.

It's rare for an American crocodile to bite a human, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The only other documented case involving a crocodile biting a human happened in 2014, Lauren Claerbout, a spokeswoman for the agency, said in an email.

It's also rare for alligators to bite humans , Claerbout said. In Florida, there are about eight unprovoked alligators bites to humans annually.

Crocodiles are a federally threatened species. They have narrower, more triangular heads and often prefer coastal, brackish and salt water, while alligators are darker, have broader snouts and are typically found in freshwater,

Rangers and park biologists were investigating the attack and monitoring the suspected crocodile.
