New crush -- Ensenada 20

Moo, You Bloody Choir. Yayayaah, it's a cow. I'm lightly smitten with this pocket cruiser, which seems as bombproof as a 1600 lb boat can be. If the coamings were any taller, they'd be a dodger. And she'll finish most races the day after the field, but hey! Our lakes are small. A slow boat will make them seem bigger, right? We have this problem -- flat water, but winds like the North Sea. So we need a boat that isn't Panic Stations when the wind kicks over 30, which is every single day . This Ensenada 20 only carries 175 sqft with the working jib, but with a 150% genoa and spinny option to get the nose up. It's basically the Balboa hull with a ridiculously raised deck and oversized spars. We''ll keep the Buccaneer18 in case our lives run short of stark terror. But does this boat strike you as a nice, mellow daysailer/weekender for a very high-wind location? Experiences? Thanks again.

poltergeist

Go for it Hey Bob -- You're right ... 175 feet is a modest sail plan, but you've got the genny for those days when it's not blowing 30. And 500+ pounds of balast should make her sit up pretty well. Looks a little light on cockpit and heavy on cabin, but if that suits your style, I'd say go for it! Where do you live, with small lakes and big wind? Kurt

175 feet is a modest sail plan, modest, my underpants are 175' sqr.

I realize this is an old thread but I think it makes more sense in this case to keep the information about a relatively unknown boat in one place. I have one of these that I sail in the lakes around Dallas, when I finish my degree I am planning to take 6 mo's to year off and sail from Houston, with the intention of making it to the Bahamas but not out of the Carribean. I'm going to single hand and plan to do more of a coastal style, short passages trip. The relatively short duration overall means that I don't need much in the way of amenities, unlike what would be needed if a boat was supposed to be a long term home. My question is simply, am I completely out of my mind considering this boat for this trip? In it's favor, I own it already which means I don't have to spend half my budget on a boat, I'll be completely comfortable with it having sailed it for years. It's pretty stable though slow (I've already modified it to have a locking keel) and it's shallow draft (about 12 inches with the board up) would be convenient in the islands. Assuming that I will have the time to be careful about my weather windows and don't mind living on a 20 footer for that amount of time, is this boat unreasonable? If so, why? Thanks Simon

Bob, do you still have this Ensenada? I'm seriously in need of rigging pictures as to how the cockpit end/mainsheets are set up - especially tha dual block thing at the end of the boom? Do you have pictures, or can you describe the setup? Thanks!

Time to resurrect an ancient thread. Assuming the seller hasn't fibbed too bad, I will be the new owner of an E20 in a few hours. This will be my first boat. I do have very limited small boat sailing experience. I think it may suit my needs perfectly which is to putz around safely in New England lakes and coastal waters with a wife who will likely never set foot in it again if it heels over more than 20 degrees. She's not quite as adventurous as I. This is likely a good thing as it has kept us from getting dead doing anything, which would likely be our fate, were I in charge. I absolutely love the lines of the E20. The cabin top which goes as far forward as a cabin top possibly could. The high, swooping coamings which in addition to keeping the sea/lake where it belongs, just look bad-ass. It may be a pig, but, by God, it sure looks fast!!!! Maybe I'll just stiffen the transom a bit and strap a ginormous Merc to it. Would appreciate any advice/warnings on this tub. Thanks.

Here's my take, the Ensenada 20 was one of those, good news-bad news kind of boats. The good news is that the hull and rig was penned by Lyle Hess who was a very good cruising boat designer. The fractional rig is easy to handle, and the boats sail reasonably well in moderate breezes. They have a surprisingly large interior for a 20 foot boat. Now for the less than good news. These boats were built by Coastal Recreation. (Coastal Wreck in the parlance of the day). In the early 1970's I had a job at a company who with no sense of irony was called 'Expressway Yachts' . Expressway specialized in selling trailerable sailboats. My job was to commission these boats. Outside of the job, I also would help new owners rig the boat the first time and give them a basic sailing lesson so I got to sail most of the models that we sold. Expressway sold Coastal Wrecks and part of my job was to check for glaring defects while I was commissioning the boats. Build quality and quality control was horrible. Most of the stuff was just goofy, like a genoa track that had all the bolts in place but only two of the bolts had nuts and washers. In the worst case, someone stepped through the bottom. It turned out that there was gelcoat on one side of the laminate, zolotone on the other side and dry glass in the middle with no sign of any resin in the dry glass. The Coastal Wreck service rep came to look at the warranty claim and reported commented 'what do you expect when you put a migrant worker on a chopper gun?' Of course that boat is now 50 years old and if it has any major flaws, they would glaringly show by now. I only recall sailing one once and I don't have a lot of clear memories of that sail. My recollection is that like most trailerable sailboats they were quite tender, but not dangerously so. They were not great in light air and when the wind filled in the boat didn't handle gusts all that well, but some of that may have been the new owner's and new sailor's lack of sailing experience. Jeff

Thanks Jeff. I did buy it. Boat isn't perfect, most everything seems sound. Hull is rock solid, as best I can tell. There is the expected deck delamination going on forward of the boom. My plan is to attempt to get the entire deck section forward of the hatch off in one piece. Replace all the balsa, and hopefully replace the original deck skin. This skin is in very nice shape, with the original cross hatching and it would be a shame to have to toss it. The keel appears to be in pretty fair shape and it does swing. At some point I would like to drop it and blast/epoxy it. Maybe next year. The rig appears to be complete. Sails aren't new, but perfectly serviceable. Tilt trailer is solid, but could use new tires. I could drop it in the water and sail as is, if I really wanted to, but want to get that deck squared away first. I have talked to a guy who had one for years. He said with a few mods to the rig, it was a great cruiser and he took it all over Long Island Sound, even when there were small craft warnings. Said it is a very dry boat thanks to the high coamings.

I used to read (pre internet days...) that the Balboa 20 used the same hull mold with a different top. True, at all? (just curious.....)

Many years ago I was interested in this boat Seems like they were all/most in Calif Offered good room for size Pocket sailer on a trailer Maybe a nifty and cheap sea of Cortez explorer

@pete c - I recently acquired an Ensenada 20...wondering if you had any tips based on your experience and modifications. Thanks!!

The three comps listed below are all Lyle Hess designs. The Balboa was Hess's first fiberglass design (1968). The Ensenada 20, with the Balboa hull but a different house (see page 97), came four years later, in 1972. The RK20 (see page 126), which was introduced in the late 1970s, appears to be a virtually identical hull but with somewhat different layouts, dimensions, and weights. A production run of over 10 years, albeit under different names, indicates that the hull design was a success. Best features: All three of the comps listed below are so close in statistical data that it's difficult to find a distinction among them, except perhaps in aesthetic appeal—which is of course in the eye of the beholder. Lyle Hess's designs are usually thought to be prettier (or handsomer?) than most, but in this early design it is hard to see a clear distinction from many other trailer-sailers of the era. Worst features: The cast iron swing keel, weighing more than a quarter of the total boat and controlled by a winch in the cabin, is at best a maintenance headache and at worst could cause serious leakage in the hull due to strain.

1972 Ensenada 20

  • Description

Seller's Description

20 foot swing keel sail boat. With single Axle trailer. Main sail, jib, Genoa, spinnaker and pole, life jackets, bumpers, ropes, wind indicator, seat cushions, no engine the Ensenada 20 is the same hull as the Balboa 20. It is a great boat. I learned to sail on this boat. It is very forgiving. Never had a single issue sailing her. You can go as fast or slow as you want. I used a Johnson 9.9 4 stroke to power out of the harbors. But it was over kill. I could have used a 4 hp and been just fine.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Also Known as the RK 20. RK Industries was subsidiary of Coastal Recreation. The hull is the same as the BALBOA 20.

Outdoor Gear Reviews, Tips & Adventure Stories to Inspire an Outdoor Life

Sailing to ensenada.

Sailing to Ensenada, Mexico from San Diego is a short trip by sailing standards, but it’s a fun and exciting day on the water….if you’re lucky enough to find some wind. The last time I sailed this route about a decade ago, we bobbed around in flat seas having to resort to using the boat’s engine the entire trip.

Recently, I had the opportunity to sail from San Diego to Ensenada on a gorgeous, 46ft sailboat.  The journey, approximately 60 nautical miles, lasted about 8hrs and was filled with dolphins, beautiful landscapes, and just the right amount of “relax”.

This time, we had plenty of wind, but it was blowing the same direction as we were headed.  Without a spinnaker, we utilize a combination of engine and wind to propel us the majority of the way.  Downwind sailing, (sailing with the wind to your back) is typically a blast and a comfortable sail, but without the right gear for the job, this sail wasn’t as exciting as it could have been

I LOVE sailing. Utilizing the wind to propel yourself across the sea wild with potential is a special experience. It’s romantic. It’s ripe with adventure. It’s life-giving. We all gravitate towards the activities that help us disconnect from the stresses of life.  I gravitate towards sailing.

Sailing around the safe confines of a harbor is fun, but sailing to a destination is exhilarating. The weather must be adequately accounted for.  The course needs plotted ahead of time.  Calculations are required to ensure an on-time arrival based on local conditions.  Destination sailing take preparation. But it’s the unknown that creates the adventure.  What sea life will we encounter?  Will we catch some fish for dinner during our travels? What business are the commercial vessels we pass enroute engaged in?  Will weather conditions change and surprise us?  Will rough seas leave us clinging to edge of the boat heaving the contents of our stomach?  Or will a strong breeze carry us swiftly leaving only the sound of the hull piercing through the waves? Once you embark, your fate is the hands of mother nature and with the sturdiness of your vessel.

While most people think of the “wild” as lush forests or desolate deserts, the sea is equally wild.  On a sailboat in the open ocean, you are adventuring where only a small percentage of humans have. The ocean (certainly all that is below the surface) is relatively unfamiliar and untraveled. Lose sight of land and the isolation can be unsettling.

At least until you encounter a pod of dolphins, a whale, or even a school of fish churning the surface in search of food.  In these moments, the aloneness gives way to a certain comfort.

On our sail to Ensenada we were met by a small pod of common dolphins.  As they often do, the dolphins quickly headed toward our boat when they noticed us and playfully cruised in our boat wake for a few moments. No matter how many times you stand on the bow of a boat and watch dolphins play alongside, it’s always magical. It’s something everyone should have the opportunity to experience at least once. They are beautiful and inquisitive creatures and can make even the worst day of sailing a little brighter.

The Quiet of the Sea

My favorite part about sailing is feeling the boat move through the water toward your destination in silence.  Once the boat is in open water and its sails are hoisted, there is nothing quite like the moment the engine is killed and the sounds of the sea take over.

Sailing provides the time and space for reflection that we often struggle to find in our lives. While at sea under the power of only the wind, we are captive to the experience. The myriad of tasks we are compelled to complete in our everyday lives are silenced with only the task of utilizing the available wind to most efficiently make headway toward our destination.  As the world around us quiets, our mind can’t help but follow.

Experiencing the wild is therapy. It disrupts our routines and adapts our perceptions. Sailing connects us with our sea-faring ancestors, nature, and ourselves.

This trip sailing to Ensenada was no exception.  With the journey feeling not long enough, we arrived into the harbor in Ensenada at nightfall, greeted by the twinkling lights of this Mexican city.

Ensenada: A Charming City

Ensenada is a city of more than 500,000 people located in Baja California, Mexico’s west coast. It’s a charming Mexican city with great food and plenty of nightlife, but it’s also a cruise ship destination and a focal point for the Valle de Guadalupe, its nearby wine region.

Having not been to Ensenada for a number of years, I was surprised to see how much the city had changed. The coastline just north of the city has significantly more development than I remember and we stumbled upon some amazing restaurants.

As anyone who’s been to Ensenada will tell you, one of the more memorable sights of the city is the enormous Mexican flag that flies near the harbor.  This giant flag greets cruise ships entering port and tourists alike – welcoming them to a welcoming city. The people of Ensenada are overwhelmingly generous and hospitable.  With a large cruise terminal, a decent amount of the Ensenada economy counts on tourism dollars. Like many Mexican towns, you can find just about anything by asking around for it.  But in Ensenada’s case, you feel less like a tourist target walking around town. You are always invited in to just about every place you pass, but never feel dragged in or pestered.

For those arriving by boat, Ensenada has two main marinas, Marina Coral and Cruiseport Village Marina . While we’ve enjoyed Marina Coral in the past, this time to Ensenada, we chose to stay at Cruiseport Village.  Marina Coral is just north of Ensenada attached to a wonderful hotel with all the amenities of a resort. Cruiseport Village is inside Ensenada’s harbor right in the middle of town.  This central location provides the ability to walk into town and explore the city just a few minutes away from your boat.

Getting Back to the States

The owner of the boat we sailed to Ensenada was leaving his boat in Ensenada leaving us to find an alternative way back home.  Luckily, many of the larger hotels in Ensenada can arrange a shuttle to take you back to the US.  Having ridden one of these shuttles on a previous trip that took us only to the border then dropped us in a 2-hour long line to walk across, I was excited to learn that this time we would be driven all the way to the airport in San Diego. Getting transportation across the border is the way to go.  We arrived at the airport in San Diego in 2 hours – the same amount of time we stood in last at the border last time.

Another option for back to the US border is by bus. ABC buses run from Ensenada to Tijuana every hour and cost about $10 per person. ABC offers nice busses and typically show movies during your travel – a nice mindless distraction to pass the time. There are a couple of places to pick up these busses in Ensenada, so be sure to plan your route to the bus station and give yourself enough time before departure.

The trip back to San Diego is breathtaking.  The drive is along the coast most of the way with endless ocean views from the cliffs above.  Much of this coastline had been heavily developed in recent years. This makes perfect sense once you lose all track of time watching the waves roll endlessly from the deep of the Pacific Ocean.  I could spend some more time in this region.

Sailing to Ensenada is a fun, all-day sail from San Diego.  Conditions are usually good and there’s a good chance you’ll spot some wildlife on your journey.  Ensenada is a beautiful and modern town with plenty to keep you occupied while there. Ground transportation between Ensenada and San Diego is an adventure in itself with beautiful views along the ocean and many options to choose from. I’m looking forward for my next excuse to visit Ensenada.

Beautifully written article! I loved how you described how sailing is good for the mind and body.

I’m just getting into it but hope to one day sail to destinations. Most likely the first big one will be to Catalina.

Sailing to Catalina is a great trip – far enough to seem like a true journey by sail, but close enough that if anything went wrong, you’re not far from help. Avalon has a great party vibe. Two Harbors is more about simplicity, peace and quiet. Both have their time and place. Either way – you should do it when you have the chance.

Make Coastal Recreation

Model Ensenada 20

Length 20 ft

Selling my 20 ft fiberglass Ensenada sailboat, it's a gorgeous classic sailboat made by Coastal Recreation and is quite rare, I believe less than 1000 were ever made. The interior is intended to sleep 4 people, one on each side berth and two in the V-berth. I have a brand new Bimini Top for the sailboat but never got it installed. All interior wood has all been torn out and rebuilt, a little coating of the interior fiberglass will be needed and the interior should be ready to use. It has a swing keel so it can be hauled easily on a trailer as well as use in shallower waters. All parts are there, just needs finishing touches putting it all together. Sails are in good shape, no tears, etc.I have a 5 or 6 horsepower long shaft Honda outboard motor that pairs nicely with this boat and it also comes with a 2005 Roadrunner aluminum trailer that has only been in water twice, all lights work great and it pulls easily.
