65m GREEN EXPEDITION

' title=

The Green Expedition is a collaboration between designer Dennis Ingemansson and with the German based Ned Ship Group, known for their experience with zero emission yachts and solar powered boats.

She is a true green yacht with eco-friendly features such as hybrid solution, skysail, solar cells, wave turbines and onboard recycling systems. Whether you’re going through rougher areas like Antarctica or Alaska, or sailing through enormous waves in Barents Sea, she is built to endure. All equipment is stored indoors, and there is no risk of losing the helicopter or tenders during stormy weather. The steel hull construction has been assigned a ICE 1A classification to handle ice.

The solar cell area covers 150 square meters, and the helicopter platform can be converted to add an additional 60 square meters of solar cells. The skysail allows for energy efficient movement together with the retractable wind turbines.

The Captain’s deck is designed as an ultra-modern penthouse, where guests can enjoy dinner and mingle with a 360 degrees ocean view. For exploration, the diving center features submarines and a decompression chamber, making it a green expedition icon.

9 Explorer Yachts Made to Cruise the World’s Most Remote Destinations

These Nine Explorer Yachts Are Redefining the Mini-Expedition Yacht Category.

With last year seeing a record number of explorer-style yachts under construction, it’s clear a new generation of superyacht buyer is no longer content to jostle for moorings in crowded harbors of the Med or Caribbean. They want open space and adventure.

Expedition yachts have traditionally been converted freighters or supply vessels, like the 223-foot Ragnar or 250-foot Yersin. But this new generation of compact superyachts, many below 150 feet, is designed for  similar missions in smaller packages, thanks to utilitarian hull designs and expanded fuel capacities.

One in this group is designed to be self-sufficient for 30 days as it explores remote regions. Another has a top speed of 25 knots, giving it the ability to outrun storms. Several have enough rear deck space to land a helicopter.

Name-brand builders such as Holland’s Damen and Italy’s Sanlorenzo and Cantiere delle Marche have been joined by a number of specialist Turkish yards, like Bering and AvA, in offering capable, adventure-ready vessels with luxury interiors.

Here are nine of the finest. Most are new, but we’ve included several recent launches, and even a decade-old classic, to show just how far this field has come.

Damen SeaXplorer 58 ‘Pink Shadow’

green yacht with helicopter

Nothing screams “explorer yacht” louder than the 190-foot SeaXplorer 58 Pink Shadow from Damen Yachting. This oceangoing beast was just launched from the Dutch brand’s yard in Antalya, Turkey. The heavily customized Pink Shadow (it’s painted green) has a towering, ice-crushing, vertical bow and a distinctive open forward gallery. The boat is designed to explore the most remote corners of the globe. The vessel can be completely self-sufficient for up to a month, with the ability to cruise at 11.5 knots for over 5,000 nautical miles. Need to fly in more supplies? There’s a basketball-court-sized helipad at the stern. The yacht’s huge in-hull garages can also be filled with a fleet of toys, including two multipurpose tenders, motorcycles, ATVs, and a 4×4 SUV, plus a custom 37-foot racing sailboat.

Lynx Crossover 27 ‘Avontuur’

green yacht with helicopter

Paint numbers on the bow and you might mistake this new 88-foot explorer from Lynx Yachts for a military vessel. There’s even space on the open aft deck for a Navy SEAL–style RIB. But the Crossover 27 is all about adventure (“Avontuur” is the Dutch word for exactly that.) Designed by Holland’s Bernd Weel with a hull shape by Diana Yacht Design, the Lynx comes with a pair of 850-horse Caterpillars that can power it to a top speed of 14 knots. At 10 knots, it has a range of over 3,000 nautical miles. This first example was commissioned for an adventure-loving Californian who had the 750-square-foot aft deck designed to carry both an Air Nautique G23 wakeboard boat and 16-foot RIB. The garage on the deck below can transport Jet Skis, paddleboards, and scuba gear.

green yacht with helicopter

One of the baseline requirements for legitimate explorer yachts is that they be safe and stable in rough seas. Which is why the 85-foot explorer is so impressive. With no fewer than three stabilizer systems, the Arksen can stay upright even if slammed side-on by some Perfect Storm– sized rogue wave. The all-aluminum hull is even designed to recover from a 180-degree knockdown. The Arksen’s semi-displacement hull and glass-filled superstructure come from U.K.-based Humphries Yacht Design. Twin, heavy-duty 330 hp Cummins diesels give the boat a top speed of 14 knots. At nine knots, it has an astonishing range of 7,000 nautical miles.

Sanlorenzo 500EXP ‘Para Bellum’

green yacht with helicopter

The 154-foot 500EXP , the newest and biggest addition to the yard’s luxury explorer yacht range, has space for a helicopter on its stern. It also features an ice-crushing full-displacement steel hull and towering bow that gives it serious expedition cred. But the 500EXP is designed to cruise to the most remote corners of the planet in comfort. The vessel has a range of more than 4,500 nautical miles at 11 knots with the twin 970-horse Cat C32s powerplants. Below decks, the generous 31-foot beam delivers copious amounts of space for 10 guests in five cabins. The latest version of the yacht, the gray-hulled Para Bellum , can now be chartered from $300,000 a week. Helicopter not included.

Alpha Yachts Alfresco 125 ‘Piccolo’

green yacht with helicopter

Turkey’s Alpha Custom Yachts go-anywhere 125-foot Piccolo focuses on big spaces to enjoy the great outdoors. The flybridge itself sprawls across 1,180 square feet, with features such as a plunge pool up front and uncluttered entertaining spaces at the rear. The sleek, clean lines are from Britain’s H2 Yacht Design, with the semi-displacement fiberglass hull from naval architects Laurent Giles. And unlike most explorer yachts, the boat is fast. Twin Caterpillar C32s can punch her to a top speed of 17.5 knots, though throttle back to 10 and it will cover over 2,300 nautical miles. The first in the Alfresco 125 series, Piccolo, was launched in 2020. It is now on the market for $12.5 million.

Bering B145 ‘Heeus’

green yacht with helicopter

The flagship of Turkey’s Bering Yachts is the 145-foot Heeus . It has a range of over 4,600 miles, which means it can run from San Francisco to Hawaii, and back, on a single tank of fuel at 12 knots. In addition to its twin main Caterpillar engines, the B145 can also be powered by electric motors and batteries. The hybrid system is designed to ease the yacht silently into more eco-sensitive anchorages and run overnight without generators. The outside decks are huge—the sundeck alone spans almost 1,000 square feet. The boat is available for weekly charter this summer for around €230,000 ($250,000).

AvA Yachts Kando 110 Explorer ‘Infinity-Nine’

green yacht with helicopter

AvA’s Kando110 Explorer series hit the headlines last November after it emerged that the Turkish yard’s newest launch had been purchased by former San Antonio Spurs’ basketball star Tony Parker. He called the boat Infinity Nine . The 110-foot, steel-and-aluminum world-girder was designed to crisscross the Atlantic, courtesy of its 6,500 mile range and fuel-sipping 650 hp Volvo D16 diesels. Distinguished by a four-deck layout, towering topsides, and expansive hull-side glass, the Kando110 has six staterooms, including a 290-square-foot full-beam master.

CdM Flexplorer 130 ‘Aurelia’

green yacht with helicopter

Superyacht cranes have never been this cool. The towering A-frame heavy-lifter on the rear deck of CdM 130 Flexplorer Aurelia can lift and launch the yacht’s hefty 28-foot tender over the stern without breaking a sweat—in fact, it can hoist up to 3.5 tonnes. But even more impressive is that, when stowed, the crane disappears completely into recesses in the yacht’s teak deck. Sergio Cutolo’s Hydro Tec studio did the yacht design. The Flexplorer series lives up to its name: Yachts can be built from 127 to 154 feet. Power-wise, Aurelia , the first of the series, has twin Caterpillar C32s to give a 14-knot top speed. At 10 knots, it has a 5,000-nautical-mile range.

Canados Oceanic 143 Fast Expedition

green yacht with helicopter

Traditional explorer yachts tend to chug across oceans at single-digit speeds. But there are times when you need to outrun a storm or punch against a fast-flowing tide. That’s the beauty of Italian builder Canados’s new Oceanic 143 tri-deck: speed. Powered by three 2,400hp Caterpillar C32 12-cylinder turbo diesels, the boat can reach a top speed of 25 knots. With a fuel capacity of 8,320 gallons, if you ease back to an eight-knot cruise speed, range extends to over 6,000 miles. Much of this comes down to the yacht’s innovative “Dis-planing” hull (see image above). Canados gave it the unusual name because the design is a rare combination of “displacement” and “planing”—topped off by a wave-slicing, straked-bow design.

  • Stef Bottinelli

Green Expedition has been designed for total luxury at sea, whilst respecting nature, thanks to its impressive green credentials

Green Expedition yacht rendering

Born from a collaboration between designer Dennis Ingemansson and the German Ned Ship Group, who specialise in zero emission yachts and solar powered boats, Green Expedition is a stunning 65m yacht with some truly impressive green credentials.

Green Expedition’s eco-friendly features boats solar cells, skysail, wave turbines and onboard recycling systems.

The solar panel area covers 150 square meters, and the helicopter platform can be converted to add an additional 60 square meters of solar cells. The skysail allows for energy efficient movement together with the retractable wind turbines.

The yacht is built with sturdiness and durability in mind and its steel hull construction has been assigned a ICE 1A classification to handle ice. Green Expedition can in fact sail through difficult icy areas like Antarctica and Alaska, and choppy seas. For safety, during storms and bad weather, all equipment such as tenders, toys and even the helicopter can be moved from the aft part and stored to a protected area to be designed with the owner.

Sailing Green With Sunreef’s Zero-Emission Hydrogen Superyacht

Sunreef Yachts reveals concept for hydrogen power Zero Cat

Sunreef Yachts gave seafarers a better look at its revolutionary Zero Cat concept, a catamaran that sails on hydrogen and produces its own power.

Sunreef Yachts is leading the market for semi-custom luxury catamarans while establishing itself as a key player in eco-friendly and sustainable yachting. The Polish yard first teased sailors with its hydrogen and solar powered catamaran last July.

Carbon-Free Luxury Sailing

Yachts have long been the symbols of the luxurious lifestyle of the rich and wealthy. But as concerns about climate change continue to intensify, questions arise on how yachts impact the environment.

A superyacht like the Zero Cat is usually defined as a privately owned vessel with at least 78 feet  in length. And there are over 9,300 of these vessels sailing on the oceans that’s valued at more than $54 billion .

Along with ships, superyachts contribute significantly to carbon dioxide emissions, which are often overlooked as they’re released at sea.

According to industry data, a superyacht emits more than 7,000 tonnes of CO2 a year – considering it has a helicopter pad, pools, and submarines. To put that in perspective, the emission is over 1,500x more than how much a family car emits.

With this data, maritime construction yards are also put under the spotlight by environmentalists to do something about their pollution.

Sunreef acted fast by introducing its revolutionary superyacht concept – the Zero Cat . It just released the first renders of this highly awaited multihull.

Sunreef Yachts hydrogen power Zero Cat

The concept yacht has stairways at the back of each hull, leaning toward the water, and a wraparound lounge at the outside helm. It also appears to have an alfresco lounge.

With this sleek superyacht design, Sunreef’s goal is to develop a sustainable sailing yacht with self-sufficient and unlimited range non-sail propulsion.

At the heart of this zero-emission luxury catamaran is the green energy that sets it apart from other superyacht models.

Zero-Emission and Safe Hydrogen Fuel Cell

According to the yard, Zero Cat runs on an engine that uses a hydrogen fuel cell which powers the superyacht. It also comes with a reformer that can transform methanol into hydrogen.

hydrogen power Sunreef yacht

The fuel-cell system producing clean energy will electrically power the propulsion as well as the hotel load, Sunreef said. With this green technology, the catamaran will generate no carbon emissions and oxides.

Without an engine powered by burning oil, the superyacht will also sail with little noise and vibrations for a quiet and smooth ride.

What’s more unique about Zero Cat is its ability to create additional green energy through its hydro generators and solar cells, which Sunreef refers to as a “solar skin”.

The solar skin is not unique to the concept yacht but has been on Sunreef’s other models. It’s wrapped around the superyacht’s bodywork and can continuously produce solar energy so long as the sun shines.

There’s also a bonus in sailing with Zero Cat: no need for high-pressure hydrogen storage on board. It means yachting would be safe, as opposed to the hydrogen stigma created by the 1937 Hindenburg crash.

And that stigma seems to be erased now that hydrogen fuel cells are hitting the market big time.

Not only is the hydrogen-powered system getting attention in maritime but is also gaining traction in road fleets.

A leading company focusing on zero-emission vehicles, First Hydrogen Corp. , shocked the market with its unbeatable fuel-cell EV (FCEV) trial results. The company’s FCEV vans trial with SSE Plc cleared 630km of range, almost double that of traditional EVs. The hydrogen vehicles also boast a 5-minute refuel time, similar to gas-powered vehicles.

With its massive success in the first trial, First Hydrogen will open up fleet trials to additional commercial opportunities. This is in response to growing interests from parcel delivery or logistics companies wanting First Hydrogen’s FCEV for express deliveries. These operation trials will start soon late Qtr 3 and Qtr 4 this year.

The demand for zero-emission vehicles and vessels has started to spike as governments and companies worldwide are racing to net zero emissions . And hydrogen fuel cells offer a promising solution for a cleaner and greener power source.

Sunreef Yachts still has a lot to do before its Zero Cat concept becomes a real superyacht sustainably sailing. But by combining hydrogen energy and other renewable power sources on board the yacht, it holds the promise for a luxurious but carbon-free getaway on the sea.

Flying Luxury: Four Helicopters Ready to Serve Your Superyacht

green yacht with helicopter

It’s only a superyacht if it has its own chopper.

Owners of magnificent, explorer class superyachts know a helicopter is their ship’s lifeline. They provide that crucial connection to the mainland when your ship is navigating the open seas and, at any given time, can serve as a workhorse or a flying Range Rover P530.

For VIPs, business meetings or private gatherings can take place while at sea, far from the long lenses of paparazzi. Guests can arrive and depart as desired, using your helicopter. At other times, the aircraft can be used to resupply the ship or, in an emergency, become an ambulance.

And let’s be real, the best experiences, like champagne with your beloved, or surf and turf with friends, are always made better with turquoise seas as a backdrop. Flight gives superyacht owners the freedom to conduct business on the mainland before ferrying guests back to the vessel for an unforgettable Mediterranean sunset.

Fortunately, industry leading aircraft manufacturers such as Airbus , Bell  and Sikorsky , have helicopters ready to serve on the world’s premier superyachts. They know the right aircraft allows these vessels to reach their full potential.

Here are four state-of-the-art choppers ready to ensure their superyachts provide an unrivaled adventure for its owner and guests.

Airbus ACH145

green yacht with helicopter

Making our list are two helicopters from Airbus, including the ACH 145, a helicopter ready to operate on today’s largest and most luxurious superyachts. The ACH 145 is a highly customizable aircraft with eight unique layouts , including a version with fine leather and wood finishes designed in collaboration with Mercedes Benz . The cabins in these aircraft also feature wide, panoramic windows, ensuring passengers can take in all the sights from 10,000 feet.

green yacht with helicopter

In terms of aircraft performance, these aircraft are capable of transporting as many as nine passengers at a range of up to 420 miles, according to Airbus . And with a maximum cruise speed of about 157 miles per hour, the ACH145 is the ideal transport if you’re looking to fly in friends and family for that sunset. However, if you’re a VIP with more intimate tastes, this chopper can be designed around four passengers with full amenities and space to spare.

Airbus H160

green yacht with helicopter

Airbus’ second helicopter on this list represents a leap forward for aircraft operating from superyachts. With a maximum speed of roughly 172 miles per hour, this medium helicopter is more environmentally friendly with reduced fuel consumption and an impressive operating range of 546 miles. And, like its sister aircraft the ACH145, this helicopter comes equipped with some impressive tech. Both the Airbus H160 and its sister the Airbus ACH145 feature advanced avionics and technology such the Helionix™ flight deck with its “intuitive software, synthetic vision system and four-axis automatic pilot with complete envelope protection,” resulting in class leading “precision and control” for its pilot, explains Airbus.

green yacht with helicopter

These features along with its reduced noise signature from its Blue Edge™ rotor blades make the H160 a class leading medium helicopter ready for service on a superyacht.

BELL FCX-001

green yacht with helicopter

Bell Flight’s FCX-001 seems to come straight out of science fiction in both its design and function. Anticipating automated flight of the future, Bell is equipping its aircraft with forward-looking design changes such as a single seat cockpit and a pilot guided by artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality.

green yacht with helicopter

The Bell FCX-001 is currently designed to hold up to 12 passengers in floating luxury and an interior that looks like it was taken out of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 : A Space Odyssey. But instead of docking with a space station, these aircraft are primed to be the perfect companion for the superyachts of the future.

Sikorsky S-76D

green yacht with helicopter

Last, and certainly not least, the Sikorsky S-7D, from the legendary aircraft manufacturer. Known for its military aircraft such as the Blackhawk helicopter and Marine One, the personal helicopter of the President of the United States, the S-7D is the Lockheed-owned Sikorsky’s latest commercial offering for VIP transport and superyacht operations.

As does the Airbus Ach145, the S-7D offers a range of customizations for its cabins, with the manufacturer ready to work with clients to guarantee the aircraft fits the needs and preferences of its owners, according to the company.

Buyers and their designers can pick from a selection of exquisite “fabrics, leathers, colors and amenities and features” to ensure the flight experience is a reflection of the exclusive experience you want for yourself and the guests ready to share in your superyacht’s journey.

green yacht with helicopter

Sikorsky’s executive chopper is also built around a noise- and vibration-resilient flight experience thanks to its Quiet Zone™ transmission technology. This makes for a smoother ride when traversing difficult, marine weather.

Fitting upwards to eight passengers in the cabin configuration that works best for its owner, the S-7D has a maximum cruising speed of about 178 miles per hour. But what makes this chopper standout the most is its military roots. According to Sikorsky, the helicopter’s main rotor hub is drawn from the rotor hub of the UH-60 Black Hawk, a chopper that has served extensively in the United States’ military.

In designing this latest version of its VIP helicopter, Sikorsky touts its extensive record deploying helicopters on military and high performance commercial missions like support on oil rigs. With superyachts deploying in all types of climates and weather conditions, including arctic seas , the Sikorsky is surely a top contender for any owner or superyacht chartering company.

Standout superyacht helicopter decks

Once the luxury of a select few, the not-so-humble helipad is having a bit of a moment. With the explosion of interest in the explorer yacht market, a touch-and-go landing pad is becoming more of a necessity than the extravagance it once was. Sure, a tender will get you from shore to superyacht in good time, but there's nothing that quite compares to touching down on the bow. We take a closer look at some of the best helidecks afloat...

Bold carries a certified helideck with a D value of 13 making it suitable for a craft such as the 3.2-tonne, twin-engine, eight-seat AgustaWestland AW109S Grand. Equipped with proper lighting and fire-safety gear, it is far from any structure that can create turbulence and features opening bulwarks to expand the deck width. While there is plenty of room to stow the craft on deck, the ocean environment is notoriously detrimental to delicate electronics, and big waves or wind can tip even a large heli over. So Bold transports its helicopter over long passages in a garage with a ceiling that adjusts in height to accommodate the craft with its rotors removed.

More about this yacht

Yachts for charter.

Designed in a military-inspired style by Espen Øino , the helideck area on 71 metre Lürssen Skat was the first to be penned by the designer for a superyacht. Located on the aft deck, the helipad has a dual purpose as a landing site for choppers and also providing shade to the deck space below.

Lürssen superyacht Ace features a foredeck helipad marked that bucks tradition by replacing the usual "H" sign with a giant "A" to represent her name. But this distinctive helideck is not actually the main landing site for arrivals from the air. Instead, landings would usually take place on support vessel Garçon , leaving the forward end of Ace, which features a swimming pool and sunbeds free for fun.

OceanXplorer

Once an oil survey vessel, the 87 metre OceanXplorer completed a refit by Damen in 2020 that turned her into the ultimate expedition yacht complete with high-tech toys, scientific research labs and Hollywood-standard editing facilities. This includes the addition of new helipad at the bow, which has been shifted three frames (1.8 metres) further forward, in order to create enough room for a proper hangar behind it which has been finished with a futuristic top-hinged door.

Ragnar is one of the coolest conversion projects to splash in recent years. Having started life as an icebreaking tug, even the harshest environments are a walk in the park for this Viking-inspired explorer. Unsurprisingly, Ragnar is jam-packed with some serious tools for exploring ashore, including an Airbus EC145 which sits atop a certified helideck, perfect for whisking thrill-seeking guests off for an afternoon of heli-skiing.

Hodor's 220 square metre helideck is fully certified and a CAP 437-compliant helipad sits aft of the 66-metre catamaran's upper deck. The Incat Crowther shadow cat features an Airbus H145 helicopter in matching stealth-grey among its plethora of superyacht toys.

Octopus is perhaps one of the best known explorers on the water. The 126 metre Lürssen hit the water in 2003, commissioned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, and was designed for far-flung global adventures. She has two helipads on board, one fore and one aft, with a hangar that can store two aircraft. Since her delivery, Octopus has explored the coast of Antarctica, traversed the Northwest Passage and discovered the wrecks of long-lost WW2 battleships off the Philippines.

Espen Øino designed the 72.25 metre  Abeking & Rasmussen explorer yacht Cloudbreak with a cinema lounge right next to the helipad, so returning heli-skiers could step straight inside from the Bell 429 Global Ranger and watch GoPro footage of their day’s performance on the slopes.

The bottom of the pool on the legendary 81.27 metre Oceanco superyacht Alfa Nero rises up to deck level to become a helideck. It’s a clever use of space and the teak “H” design looks smart whether up or down.

Stella Maris

Yacht designer Espen Øino  re-imagined the typically utilitarian helicopter deck on VSY’s revolutionary 72 metre superyacht Stella Maris . Øino envisioned a superyacht helipad that was a focal point. Rather than trying to disguise the helicopter deck, it defines the exterior profile on Stella Maris , jutting out on the upper aft deck. When not welcoming helicopters, the huge deck is put to good use as a space for sunning and socialising.

For this classification, a superyacht helipad must be constructed and operated in line with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY3) Annex 6, which is basically the technical standards for helicopter landing areas, or helipads.

Helipad onboard MY Ragnar

This code sets out the basic rules governing the design, construction and operation of a helipad, which includes important factors such as a yacht’s load bearing capacity, obstacle clearance, consideration of airflow, safe access points, lighting, permanent deck markings and relevant crew training on helicopter operations.

green yacht with helicopter

The responsibility for the survey and certification process for a helipad intended for commercial use is shared between the yacht’s registered flag state, the classification society and an aviation inspection body, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ).

All in all, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room for winging it.

In a nutshell, no.

Helicopters are not permitted to touch down on a non-certified helipad onboard a yacht that is being used commercially, i.e. for charter, unless for a medical emergency such as the evacuation of sick or injured passengers.

green yacht with helicopter

A helipad or helideck is considered a commercial operation if used to either;

  • Receive commercial charter helicopters, or
  • Transport charter guests

Therefore, even a yacht being used privately by its owner cannot receive a commercial charter helicopter if the helideck is not certified.

The ICAO have also weighed in on this point, stipulating that “all commercial air transport helicopters should land on certified helipads which must be built according to certain standards”.

Private helipads onboard a yacht adhere to less stringent rules and therefore do not have to meet the commercial standards for certification.

We find many owners are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aesthetic of the yacht

Aft helipad with sun loungers onboard MY Luna B

That's not to say that non-certified helipads aren’t safe, as for the most part they will have been designed with the regulations in mind. However, more often a yacht’s visual appeal is advocated over the practicalities of helipad design. Chris Wood, a helidecks operations manager with Safeguard Helidecks Certification agrees: “We find many owner's are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aethestic of the yacht."

This snazzy term has become synonymous with luxury superyachts, although it technically has no meaning. For clarity's sake, unless specified ‘touch and go’ helipads are not certified and therefore cannot be used for commercial operations i.e. yacht charters, with the exception of medical emergencies.

MY O'Ptasia

This can cause some confusion, especially as these types of helipads are often highlighted as a stand-out feature when marketing a yacht for charter.

A certified helipad onboard a yacht is a major bonus for yacht charterers wishing to expedite their travel time and arrive in style. Other advantages include;

  • Quick and easy access to and from the yacht
  • Avoids wasting time in heavy traffic
  • Avoids lengthy tender rides to yachts out on anchor
  • Provides an opportunity for guests to explore their surroundings further
  • Ideal jumping off point for extreme sports such as heli skiing
  • Useful for corporate charter events
  • Safe and comfortable transportation option

We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters

As for non-commercial helipads, it can also be used for medical emergencies.

In conclusion, a fully operational helideck is an increasingly desirable feature onboard a charter yacht, which has led to a growing demand for helipad certification. Chris Woods at Safeguard Helidecks Certification confirms this is one of their biggest growth areas: "We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters".

So, although there are currently only a handful of charter yachts offering certified helipads right now, the future looks bright.

We have hand-picked a selection of top-rated superyachts equipped with a commerical landing platform for the ultimate luxury yacht charter.

Lloyd Werft and Stay Sea Design launch Albatross concept

The ‘green yacht’ design would make use of wind, solar and seawater for operation

Lloyd Werft and Stay Sea Design launch Albatross concept

Lloyd Werft

By Alex Smith | 23 September 2022

Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven and Stay Sea Design have launched a new ‘green yacht’ catamaran concept, Albatross, that will use wind, solar and seawater to operate.

The concept would split operations into a harbour/anchor mode and a sea/sailing mode. While in harbour/anchor mode, energy would be generated by six methanol fuel cells of 200 kilowatts each, assisted by five wind turbines and 1150 square metres of solar panels equipped with a 4-megawatt lithium-ion battery.

In driving/sailing mode, propulsion would instead be generated by four main engines of 1800 kilowatts each, coupled in pairs to two gearboxes for a 1000-kilowatt motor attached to a controllable pitch propeller system. The engines would be powered using conventional marine gas oil, though fuel consumption would be reduced by a rigid wing system that could deliver approximately 1200 kilowatts of power in fair winds.

Six box coolers would replace a conventional pumped cooling system, saving approximately 70 kilowatts of power per hour. In addition, the companies have carried out an analysis of possible energy consumers onboard the ship, which they will allow them to achieve 90 kilowatts of power saving though the correct selection and placement of equipment.

The ship would feature spaces including a swimming pool platform, a beach club, gym, spa and several dining areas for up to 14 guests, though interior layouts can be adapted for customer needs. Up to 46 crew can be accommodated in mainly single and double cabins, and crew amenities include a lounge, an outside recreation area and a gym.

Albatross would feature two separate tender garages, equipped with four tenders and four jet skis. Each tender garage incorporates two rapid charging units with a charging time of around 20 minutes but will also be equipped for diesel-powered tenders. Each would be equipped with two shell doors and two gantry cranes, allow launching procedures on either the inboard or outboard side of both hulls. A wave breaker arrangement could also be used to create a moon pool effect between the two hulls, reducing swell and sea noise.

A helicopter deck and landing area also features in the design, and would be equipped with fast-charging unity for possible electrically-driven helicopters, as well as facilities for conventional aviation fuel-powered aircraft.

1. Specification of Large Yacht Helicopter Landing Officer Training

1.1 introduction.

The correct performance of standard procedures and a swift response to emergency situations by the helideck team are the key factors in the safety of all crew and passengers on the yacht and helicopter. The Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO) is the primary link between the yacht and the helicopter and is in overall charge of the helideck during flight operations.

Specific training shall be provided to the HLO by an appropriate training provider.

On completion of the training, the trainees will have a good understanding of the organisational requirements for the operation of helicopters from large yacht helidecks.

1.3 Objectives

Trainees will be able to:

  • Assist the aircraft commander in completing paperwork requirements prior to flying operations.
  • Supervise a helideck team during flying operations.
  • Act as Helideck Team Leader during emergency situations.
  • Organise and conduct onboard helicopter drills to maintain helideck team training currency.

1.4 Entry Standards

Prior to attending this module, trainees must have completed the following:

  • Advanced Fire Fighting (The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) Code – Table A-VI/3).
  • Helideck Assistant (HDA) qualified - Large Yacht Helicopter Procedures and Emergency Response and Large Yacht Helideck Fire Fighting Courses completed.

The training provider must ensure that learners are fit to participate in all aspects of the training. If there is any doubt as to an individual’s ability to participate in such exercises an appropriate risk assessment should be carried out to determine what is required in order to proceed in a safe manner. Training providers may consider utilizing the ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness.

1.5 Course Intake Limitations

The trainer to learner ratio shall not exceed 1:6 for practical and 1:12 for non-practical sessions. The training provider, having due regard to health and safety and the objectives of the training, shall determine other staffing requirements.

Practical elements are to be conducted in groups of a minimum of 3 or as per the yacht’s Helideck Landing Areas Operations Manual, whichever is greater. Practical elements should allow the trainee to lead a team of 3 personnel. These additional 2 personnel may be either trainees on the Large Yacht Helicopter Procedures and Emergency Response module or already qualified helicopter yacht crew.

1.6 Staff Requirements

Properly qualified personnel should carry out all training and assessments. All staff must:

  • Understand the specific objectives of the training,
  • Be familiar with the operation of helicopters from marine helidecks,
  • Have an understanding of instructional techniques and practices, and assessment methods and practices. As a minimum, this should meet the standards of the City & Guilds Train the Trainer course [footnote 1] , or equivalent,
  • Have an understanding of the particular problems of helicopter operations on large yachts.

1.7 Facilities

This course may be delivered onboard or ashore following a risk assessment conducted by the approved trainer to ensure the facilities are suitable.

These risk assessments shall be retained as they may be audited at Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) course reapproval audits.

1.8 Training Plan

The training modules detailed in sections two to four (Large Yacht Helideck Procedures & Emergency Response Training, Large Yacht Helicopter Landing Officer Training and Large Yacht Helideck Fire Fighting training) of this syllabus may be delivered as a full-time block course of at least 16 hours duration, i.e., 16 hours contact time. If delivered in this manner, the modules need not be split equally by time but enough time must be allowed to fully cover the module.

If this module is delivered as a standalone unit, it should be provided as a full-time block course of at least six hours duration, i.e., six hours contact time.

The training should be provided over an appropriate number of days to fully cover the course criteria. A training day should have no more than eight contact hours and cannot be more than 10 hours, including relevant breaks.

It is recommended that practical work should make up at least 50% of this contact time.

1.9 Assessment

The training must be organised so that by demonstration, trainees are able to show that they meet the requirements of column 2 of Table B in accordance with the methods for demonstrating competence in column 3 of that table and the criteria for evaluating competence in column 4.

1.10 Quality Management System (QMS)

The training provider must have a formally documented health and safety management system and a QMS that complies with MSN 1865 – Amendment 1 , Annex F (or subsequent publication) and ensures:

  • A continued satisfactory delivery of the programme to the current standards, reflecting changes of technology and best practice(s);
  • The training programme entry standards are met;
  • Where a written assessment or a practical examination is required, the same person does not carry out the training and assessment of the programme. Where two people are acting as instructors they may alternate between assessor and instructor. QMS procedures should detail how the assessment is quality assured and, if required, how continuous practical assessment is achieved;
  • Only those who complete the training programme and meet any other necessary requirements are issued with certificates/documentary evidence;
  • Certificates are issued in a format that meets the MCA requirements (available in the MCA criteria guidelines);
  • Records of certificates issued are securely maintained until the 70th birthday of the certificate holder or 5 years from the date of issue, whichever is the longer;
  • The record system enables the authenticity of certificates to be verified and replacement certificates to be issued;
  • Where approved for peripatetic delivery [footnote 2] , a formal risk assessment (see section 4.3 of MSN 1865 – Amendment 1, Annex F) is carried out to ascertain the suitability of each venue and records of such assessment are retained for 5 years. This risk assessment can be conducted by the instructor on arrival to the venue;
  • The approving MCA Marine Office has information about the dates, timing and venues of all courses delivered; and
  • Any changes made to the course content, facilities, equipment, training staff or other matters that may affect the delivery of the programme are reported to the approving Marine Office without delay.

2. Guidance on conduct and structure of Large Yacht Helicopter Landing Officer Response training

Practical training is best completed with the trainee leading a helideck team of 2 Helideck Assistants.

This module may be delivered concurrently with other modules, with the trainee performing the HLO role. In this case, it is important that the HLO trainees still demonstrate the competences required for each module.

5. Accident follow-up procedures

  • Post incident management
  • Evidence gathering and reporting accident to authorities

2.2 Practical Session

The practical session is best achieved with the HLO commanding 2 HDAs during the exercises. If more than 1 HLO trainee is present then the HLO role should be performed on a rotational basis.

2.3 Table B - Specification of Minimum Standard of Competence for Large Yacht Helicopter Landing Officer

2.4 competence evaluation guidance, preparing for flying operations.

In achieving this element, the candidate will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the use of pre-flying operations documentation;
