2025 NZL Worlds Dates announced.

OFFICIAL - The 2025 A-Cat Worlds will be held at Manly Sailing Club, North Island, New Zealand. Dates - 8th-16th November 2025.

We can now look forward enormously to this event, at the club where no lesser sailor than Russel Coutts is Commodore, so we hope as many as possible can come over join in the party in Aeoteroa, the 'Land Of The Long White Cloud'!

AUS Nationals crown Adam Beattie and Scott Anderson their 2024 Champions

The final day of a regatta can be a strange one. Sometimes, it all comes down to the last race as in the Toulon Worlds, and sometimes the last downwind leg of that race too, as we saw in Houston. On other occasions, the frontrunner is already decided and can afford to not even race as the discard would take care of the points gained for a DNR. Today was such an event. Both Scotty Anderson and Adam Beattie had the championship sewn up probably 2 races ago. So, some choose not to race and give someone else their chance of a bullet.

Australian National Championships clinched, with a race to go.

The penultimate day at the AUS A-Cat Nationals as another fun day on the lake. Although the predicted wind didn’t seem to come up to the promise of 2 kts more that yesterday, it was still an acceptable 8-11 knots. A nice clear blue sky also helped too. 2 races were scheduled for today, leaving a single race on Friday morning. As a result, because the standings overnight were the way they were, it was a fair chance that at least one fleet would see their Champion emerge unless something untoward happened.

AUS Nats, day 3, the wind and sun finally came to the party,

Day three, out on the lake, was when the place finally delivered what the locals were used to. The Australian A-Cat Nationals saw Easterly breezes, at about 13-14 knots and, coupled with a blue sky arriving on que, it was Aussie Sparkling Wine sailing at last. Coming into the day, the Race Officer had already achieved a championship, with 6 races completed. He was by now, nicely on track to complete a full series of 12 races, where the much desired second discards would arrive.

AUS Nationals, day 2.

The second day out on Lake Macquarie, and the AUS 2024 A-Class Cat Nationals saw the wind 180 deg to yesterday. The scheduled start time of 11.00 was, for some reason not fully communicated to me, was pushed back to 13.00. No matter, the fleet just sat about and talked more, and it allowed this correspondent to get his reports done earlier, so every cloud, as they say. However, looking back, it did mean that the fleet actually missed out on the hour of the best breeze of the day.

Snakes and ladders in day 1 of the AUS Nationals

At day one of the Australian A-Cat National Championships, on the waters of South Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club, NSW, the cream of the Australian fleet assembled. 46 boats, over half of the National Fleet, were joined by two US guests. The draw for the Americans, Mike Christiansen, US No.3, and Ravi Parent, 2022 World A-Cat and F-18 Champion, was a chance to compete in the most competitive National fleet in the World. The fleet currently boasts a host of multiple World Champions, Olympic medallists and even an America’s Cup skipper.

WGM Ballot results

Class Rule C.5.s change about trapeze harness : Accepted

The proposal to alter the Class Rules to allow any type of trapeze harness has been massively accepted. Following the members ballot conducted as a result of the proposal by the Australian National Association, voted during the WGM 2023, along with some optional questions we asked during this consultation. The results are published below. This will now go off to World Sailing to be validated and incorporated into the Class Rules.

AUS Nationals ready to go.

This week the Australian A-Cat fleet assembles for it’s National Championships. This year it is at the South Lake Macquarie Amateur Sailing Club, a return after 9 years. The lake lies just to the South of Newcastle, NSW, about 90 mins away from Sydney, on the Australian Southeast coast. The vast lake, some 120 Km2 in area, is the largest saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere. It is a Ria, which I’m sure you vividly remember from those school geography lessons, is a drowned non glacial river valley with an opening to the sea.

Grand Prix style finish trials (at National level)

New suggestions for improving our racing cannot be a bad thing.  Our race procedures are always capable of upgrading to create a better experience for us all.  With this in mind, a suggestion has been made from Rainer Bohrer, in his committee role for class promotion and growth, that attempts to deal with tidying and speeding up race f

2023 Review of the A-Cat Year.

For many of us, 2023 was a somewhat frustrating year. A combination of global warming changing weather patterns, with cost of living and fuel increases, saw a few European events cancelled or having lower than expected turnouts. The curse of the internet, whereby some sailors tend now to only make the call to attend an event less than a week before, after deciding if it’s ‘their weather’ is now also a big factor, and this knock-on effect for clubs mean that fewer of them are prepared to take a punt to put in the effort and mobilise their volunteers into organising an event.

  • Thursday's uptick extends a months-long rally for Novo Nordisk as excitement grows around weight loss drugs and their wider applications.

Wegovy obesity drug maker Novo Nordisk surpassed Tesla in market value, after fresh early trial data showed positive results for its new experimental weight loss pill.

Shares of the Danish company hit a record high on Thursday, rallying by as much as 8%, after telling investors that a Phase I trial of the company's amycretin pill showed 13.1% weight loss in participants after 12 weeks.

Novo Nordisk is now the 12th most valuable company in the world, with a market cap of $604 billion — ahead of Tesla's $569 billion, according to FactSet data.

Shares were trading slightly lower on Friday, down 0.5%, by 10:00 a.m. London time.

Top 15 companies by market capitalization

The uptick of Thursday extends a months-long rally for Novo Nordisk, as excitement grows around weight loss drugs and their potential wider applications. The company is now the most valuable in Europe, with a valuation larger than Denmark's total gross domestic product last year.

The early amycretin data marks a fresh milestone for Novo Nordisk, potentially offering a more effective and less intrusive alternative to its already widely successful injection-based Wegovy and Ozempic drugs. Wegovy showed weight loss of 6% in a 12-week trial, while Ozempic is a diabetes treatment.

A Phase II trial of amycretin will begin in the second half of this year, with results expected in early 2026, the company said Thursday. The treatment will then be subject to Phase III and Phase IV trials — a process which could take years.

Still Novo's head of development Martin Holst Lange said Friday that he anticipated that the pill could be available to consumers "within this decade."

"I never commit to timelines but I would be very comfortable to say at the very least within this decade," Lange he said, according to Reuters .

Weight-loss drugs poised for big 2024 as demand surges

The company also said that it expects amycretin, and its other new experimental obesity drug CagriSema, to have similar cardiac benefits to Wegovy.

Earlier on Thursday, Novo Nordisk said that it was expanding its focus to include cardiovascular disease treatments, as it seeks to position its offering as more than a "vanity" drug.

A large late-stage study on Tuesday showed that Ozempic delayed progression of chronic kidney disease in diabetes patients, reducing the risk of death from that and major cardiac events by 24%.

It follows previous studies demonstrating that Wegovy lowered the risk of serious cardiovascular complications in people with obesity and heart disease.

Investors have been closely watching the progression of obesity treatments and the underlying appetite-suppressing GLP-1 drug class, for an indication of their wider market implications.

Ahead of the latest developments, Barclays forecast in 2023 that the weight loss drug industry could be worth as much as $200 billion by the end of the decade, with its applications likely to disrupt sectors well beyond health care.

All you need to know about sailing A Class Catamarans in Australia

a class catamaran nationals results

A Class Sailing

The A Class Catamaran is the fastest single handed small catamaran in the world. This highly responsive lightweight boat is a joy to sail. The powerful rig means that even the heaviest sailors are on the trapeze upwind in 6 knots of breeze and flying a hull downwind (wild thing). The top sailors in the class have now mastered the art of trapezing downwind, making the boat even faster and more exciting. The boat is very easy for an experienced sailor to sail, but very difficult to sail really fast.

The A Class is a boat built specifically for racing and has very strong fleets both in Australian and overseas. The National Championship in 2011 had a highly competitive fleet of 73 boats, the largest catamaran fleet in Australia. State Championships in Qld, Vic and NSW all had over 30 competitors. Australians consistently perform well at the world championships, in 2010 taking 5 of the top 10 places, including the top 3.

The high quality of racing in the A Class often surprises those new to the class. Regular competitors include Olympic medalists and world champions in several other classes. At recent Australian National Championships, several professional sailors from Americas Cup teams have been shocked to find themselves mid-fleet, although others like Dean Barker and James Spithill have shown their ability to perform at the top of any fleet.

The A Class catamaran is a development class with very simple rules defining the boat. The key rules are:

Full rules are available on the international site.

Several competitive designs of A-Class are commercially available, although which boat is the fastest changes as these products are constantly improved. 50 years of development have produced a very refined boat, so changes are typically incremental and boats usually remain competitive for several years.

If you are interested in a new boat, a number of manufacturers can be found under the Builders/Suppliers list on the right of page.. For secondhand boats and parts our members use the classifieds on this site .

One strong advantage of the development nature of the class is that it allows customization of a boat to suit a specific sailor. For example the weight of a sailor is much less critical on an A Class than any one design class. A heavier sailor will choose a more powerful sail and mast combination than a lighter sailor and a hull shape with more buoyancy. This usually ensures that sailing skill is the most important factor in winning races. It is common to see the top competitors using different hull shapes, mast manufacturers and sailmakers.

Come and give A Class sailing a try. There are a number of clubs where A Classes are sailed regularly and the sailors at these clubs will be happy to talk to you about getting started. Please contact your state representative ( details on our contacts page ) to find out which clubs are active in your area.

Boys basketball state finals

Plano East (38-0) vs. Mansfield Lake Ridge (32-6)

When: 7 p.m. Friday at the Alamodome in San Antonio

Record: 38-0

Playoff road: d. Prosper Rock Hill 88-51, d. Highland Park 74-45, d. Allen 79-52, d. Northwest Eaton 57-30, d. Keller 76-60

Previous appearances at state: 1 (1994)

State titles: None

Notable: DJ Hall , a 6-7 junior forward, leads Plano East in scoring at 15.7 points per game and averages 7.0 rebounds. He scored 31 in Saturday’s 76-60 win over Keller in the 6A Region I final. Senior guard Jordan Mizell had 18 points against Keller and averages 10.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists. Narit Chotikavanic, one of 11 seniors on the Plano East roster, averages 9.6 points and 5.1 rebounds and fellow senior Jon Tran averages 7.6 points and has made a team-leading 57 3-pointers. The state’s top-ranked 6A team has won by an average of 23.2 points and has had only five games decided by fewer than 10 points. One of those was a 55-50 win over fellow 6A state semifinalist and state No. 2-ranked Round Rock Stony Point. Plano East, ranked No. 3 in the nation by MaxPreps, is trying to become the third Dallas-area UIL boys basketball team to win a state championship with an undefeated record . The first two to accomplish that were Lincoln in 2002 and Duncanville in 2007. In Plano East’s only other trip to the state tournament, it lost 50-44 to Sugar Land Willowridge in the 5A championship game. Jeff Clarkson, now the head boys coach at Plano Prestonwood Christian, led Plano East with 15 points in that game.

Mansfield Lake Ridge

Record: 32-6

Playoff road: d. Killeen Harker Heights 56-49, d. Wylie 55-37, d. Waxahachie 78-63, d. Cypress Ranch 67-56, d. Rockwall 48-39

Previous appearances at state: None

Notable: Lake Ridge was the No. 3 seed from District 11-6A but was well prepared for the level of competition it would face in the playoffs after competing in a district with two state-ranked teams — No. 11 Duncanville and No. 12 Waxahachie — in addition to 2023 state semifinalist DeSoto. After losing twice to Waxahachie in the regular season, Lake Ridge beat its rival in the third round of the playoffs as Amir McMillian (18 points), Matthew Alexander (17), Eze Nwakamma (14) and Ahmare Rose (13) scored in double figures. Rose leads Lake Ridge in scoring at 12.8 points per game and is followed closely by McMillian (12.7), Alexander (11.0) and Nwakamma (10.7). The 6-5 Rose leads the team in rebounds, averaging 6.4 per game, and the 6-8 Nwakamma averages 6.1. Lake Ridge owns a 58-49 regular-season win over 5A state No. 1-ranked and state semifinalist Lancaster. Lake Ridge also lost by just one to 6A state semifinalist Beaumont United. Lake Ridge missed the playoffs last season, but a team with nine seniors — including Rose, McMillian and Alexander — set a school record for most wins in a season.

Faith Family adjusts vs. Stafford, returns to 4A title game

SAN ANTONIO — In its last five state tournament appearances,  Faith Family has relied on its size .

But just minutes into its  Class 4A state semifinal contest against Stafford , the team realized it couldn’t default to that same strategy.

Faith Family (24-11) had to turn to transition buckets, guard play and outside shooting in its 59-40 win over Stafford (35-7) Friday afternoon. Two double-digit runs in the first half gave it a sizable halftime lead that carried it to victory, securing it a spot in Saturday’s state championship game where it will  seek to win its third consecutive state title.
