“Amazing Sunset” Review of Darwin Sailing Club Waterfront Bistro

yachts restaurant darwin

We chose here specifically to see the sunset and were not disappointed. From my initial call to the club (spoke with Alana) to inquire about booking a table and the dress code to signing in with Nick. We were made to feel so welcome. The food was great and the view of the sunset was spectacular. Was only a $10.00 uber ride from Darwin. Well worth the trip.

Sailing club is a great location, on the beach with awesome views of the water and amazing sunsets. The quality of the meals were okay, i would describe them as general pub food but i don't believe the prices match the meals, as they were on the high side. The staff were friendly and the beers were cold. Its good for families as it has a playground and large grassed areas for the kids. Based on family environment, great views and relaxed atmosphere, 4 stars, but the food and prices id give 3 stars

Location, location, location! You can't beat the Sailing Club for a drink at sunset. The vibe is relaxed and very Darwin. While it's a member's club, locals and visitors can be signed in for the occasional visit. I've eaten twice there in the last month and one steak was to die for, and the other a bit ordinary. Bistro style food with lots of options.

Had a great balmy evening with a cold beer or two, a cooling breeze plus outdoors fans and a reasonable meal at the Darwin sailing club last week. Open to visitors and much less crowded than Mindl Beach. To my mind this is far easier way to enjoy the spectacular sunset view and relax with somewhere to sit and eat. When I did the Mindl markets a few years back it was so crowded there was really nowhere to sit down and enjoy your takeaway meal. So my new go to destination will be the sailing club!

Amazing food, great beer. Best tasting chips in NT. Great that they do Great Northern full strength on tap, other bars sell bottles only, but DSC keeps it real with the pints.

Southeast Asia Pilot by Bill O’Leary & Andy Dowden

Darwin is a major support centre for commercial prawn and fishing industries, and a hub for oil, gas and mining. The Australian Navy has its northern patrol boat fleet stationed here. As a result it’s an excellent place for cruising yachts to stop for repairs and maintenance. All the major engine and yacht equipment suppliers have shops and service centres here.

Darwin, Northern Territories, Australia

All vessels over 25 metres entering Darwin Harbour limits must have a pilot on board. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a commercial or private vessel. Every marina demands comprehensive paperwork and vessel insurance in place before they’ll let you into their locks. Start a conversation in advance and email a copy of your insurance to avoid the irritation of waiting on anchor out in the roads.

It can be difficult to secure a berth in one of the four Darwin marinas, all accessed via locks due to the tidal range. In the dry season from April to October, marina berths are hard to come by, so book in advance. July is the most difficult month due to the influx of visiting yachts joining the ‘Sail Indonesia Rally’ and the ‘Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race and Rally’.

Darwin to Singapore

There are three main routes from Darwin to Singapore. The first is checking in at Kupang, West Timor then leaving Savu and Sumba to the south, crossing through the island chain via the Komodo Strait. A westerly route then follows to the north of Sumbawa, Lombok, Bali, Java and north to Singapore.

Alternatively, leaving Darwin and laying a course for the Northern tip of East Timor before turning west to follow the northern reaches of Alor and Flores joining the same route north of Sumbawa. It is possible to use any of the straits between the Indonesian Islands to traverse from the Indian Ocean to the Flores Sea, but particularly the Lombok and Alas Straits have significant current and tidal races. The rule of thumb is it floods to the north and ebbs to the south.

For those not wishing to check into Indonesia, the best route is west to Christmas Island (which is Australian territory) some 1,600 miles from Darwin, then north to the Sunda Strait past Krakatoa and onward to Singapore.

Prior to Covid-19, there were three yacht races and rallies organised from Darwin into Indonesian ports. It remains to be seen what reemerges once the pandemic has receded. It is commonplace for yachts to join these events because they offer a security clearance and mass check-in facilities, including immigration clearance and cruising permits for Indonesia.

Fuelling in Darwin There are two fuel docks for pleasure yachts in Darwin. Cullen Bay Marina and Fisherman’s Wharf sell through Bailey’s Marine Fuels Australia. They accept all major credit cards. Fisherman’s is more for commercial vessels and located past Stokes Hill Wharf just south of the Francis Bay Mooring Basin (the Duck Pond) at 12°27.535S, 130°50.992E. Approaches to this wharf can be shallow at low tides so deep draft vessels should time their entry. At Fisherman’s Wharf the diesel pumps are hi-flow, but at Cullen Bay Marina they run slower. Fisherman’s Wharf is usually stacked full of commercial fishing boats, so you may have to raft up alongside. This means collecting the fuel line from the wharf and manhandling it over others’ decks to your boat. Pollution laws are strict so you’ll require capable crew to ensure nothing gets spilt – one to be stationed on the dock at the emergency shut off, with another controlling the filler nozzle back on your boat. The locals take a dim view of fuel spillages and view it as gross incompetence. Call Baileys in advance to time bunkering when fewer vessels are alongside. The Cullen Bay Marina fuel dock is just outside the marina lock. Baileys run this pump too. The dock has plenty of water at all tides but the channel shallows at spring lows. Ferries and charter boats use this pontoon, so you might get shuffled around. At the time of writing the pump is set to shut off at $200 limits. This resetting and restarting can be irritating especially bunkering larger quantities. Call Baileys ahead to arrange a slot on either dock or to apply for a prepaid fuel card. www.baileysmarine.com.au      +61 8 8941 3320.

DARWIN – CULLEN BAY MARINA

yachts restaurant darwin

CULLEN BAY MARINA. 12°27.124S, 130°49.296E

On the southwest corner of the Darwin peninsula, Cullen Bay Marina is a full service facility popular with cruising yachts.

It is not a conventional marina managed by a single authority, but rather a collection of berths individually owned under a strata title system. However, some berths are usually available for short-term rental for visiting yachts, except in July.

Because of the 8-metre tidal range, as with all marinas in Darwin, there is a lock system. Inside the basin there are 140 berths and the area has been developed into commercial units with shops, offices and restaurants. Plan for higher tide arrival as approaches can get shallow.

Near the lock outside there is a commercial dock for passenger cruise operations at the fuel pontoon.

FRANCES BAY MOORING BASIN

(THE ‘DUCK POND’)

FRANCES BAY. 12°27.328S, 130°50.857E

The Northern Territory Department of Lands and Planning owns and operates the Frances Bay Mooring Basin, including associated wharves Hornibrooks, Fisherman’s and Raptis. The Mooring Basin or ‘Duck Pond’ lays a short way up Sadgroves Creek.

Check tides because approaches after Stokes Hill Wharf almost dry out in the spring lows. Add two metres to your own draft as the rule of thumb for the lowest tide to approach the locks around here. The internal facilities are for the commercial fishing fleet but they do accommodate visitors, especially if your yacht is too large for the other three marinas. There is often a queue at the lock so best contact in advance to reserve a slot.

The lockmaster will allocate you a position inside on European-style stern-to the dock berths. Lasso or loop a line onto the 1-metre diameter piles driven in about 25 metres off the dock and reverse in or tie alongside another boat. The jetties are fixed and there can be minor tidal movements inside when the lock is opened so don’t tie up too short on the stern.

Inside is a real cultural treat being home to more than 50 local prawn trawlers and barramundi fishermen. It’s a short walk north to the Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association site, with a small bar and restaurant. This is the only basin in Darwin where you can drive a vehicle right up to your vessel for loading gear or to carry out heavy maintenance.

Up to 60 trawlers can be offloading fresh banana prawns between April and June and again with tiger prawns between August and November. A few boats will sell to you direct and will have a sign out front if they do. Lockmaster: VHF Ch. 6 “Duck Pond Lock”. +61 4 0111 7062 Small Ships Scheduler: [email protected] . +61 8 8922 0617

DINAH BEACH

Cruising yacht association.

Further up Sadgroves Creek, between the Duck Pond and Tipperary Waters Marina, is an all-tide dinghy pontoon and ramp. It’s a short walk to Dinah Beach Cruising Yacht Association (DBCYA) with a rare old-Darwin style open-air bar and restaurant.

Formed in 1982, the club has a colourful history. It offers a laundry, hardstand, careening poles, workshop and dinghy racks. Visitors are welcome. While the club doesn’t offer repair or maintenance services, there’s always someone who knows someone (including a few Mick Dundee types) who can help you.

There is a wet season yacht race series with five classes. DBCYA is the main coordinating body for the annual Darwin to Ambon Yacht Race and Rally. www.dbcya.com.au +61 8 8981 7816

Outside, and half a mile north on the opposite side of Sadgroves Creek at the turn, are a few dozen government-managed fore-and-aft moorings at 12°26.725S, 130°51.376E . They’re well made with three rows of thick braided line, buoyed at regular intervals by large yellow-painted tires.

A convenient anchorage to wait out the tide, or if you’re on a budget, is south at the wide creek mouth a few hundred metres off the north of Stokes Hill Wharf at 12°28.099S, 130°51.244E . This spot, in 8-11 metres on mud, is open to the southeast and fishing boats’ wake to and from the Duck Pond. Here, and up at the north moorings, is popular with the local liveaboard characters because it’s cheap and close to Darwin CBD. It’s a far easier option to transit shore near here than lug your dinghy up and down the beach around at Fanny Bay.

TIPPERARY WATERS MARINA

Tipperary waters marina. 12°26.948s, 130°51.086e.

A few hundred metres further north of DBCYA is the lock entrance for the 72-berth Tipperary Waters Marina. The lock dimensions are 22 x 6.1 metres with a minimum depth of 3.5 metres. You’ll need a 4-metre tide to be comfortable approaching the lock. It is a private marina with a few berths available for visiting yachts between 12 and 21 metres. Facilities include a bar and restaurant, supermarket, laundromats and fast food outlets. There is a chandlery and sail maker a few minutes walk away. VHF Ch. 08 “Tipperary Lockmaster”.

www.tipperarywatersmarina.com

BAYVIEW MARINA

yachts restaurant darwin

BAYVIEW MARINA. 12°26.514S, 130°51.574E

This residential development with a 128-berth marina is the most likely basin for a visiting yacht to secure a berth, especially in July. It’s a half-mile further up Sadgroves Creek from Tipperary Marina and needs at least four metres of tide to approach the lock. The passage is not well marked so best ask advice from the lockmaster when you’re making a booking.

There are no shops or restaurants or fuel docks at Bayview but it’s nice and quiet. It’s a 40-minute walk to the CBD, but there’s a bus stop close by. Lockmaster: VHF Ch. 68 “Bayview Lock”.

+61 4 1891 0888. www.bayviewmarina.com.au

FANNY BAY. 12°25.775S, 130°49.920E

Home to the Darwin Sailing Club, this long open sandy beach offers anchorage in 10-12 metres. Beware the 8-metre tide; do not leave your boat anchored in less than 10 metres.

It’s a long ride to shore and you must take your dinghy above the high tide mark or be prepared to swim to retrieve it. There are club trolleys to help get the dinghies up the beach. There is a laundry, toilets and showers, lockers and a dinghy rack. Afternoon sea breezes can make this anchorage a bit uncomfortable. Visiting yachtsmen are welcome at the club.

19 of the best restaurants in Darwin for all occasions

Kate Bettes

Travel Journalist

30 October 2023

Time

Darwin’s best restaurants add a healthy dollop of spice and experimentation to cuisines you might have tried before.

Asian markets, hipster cafes and jovial Greek tavernas meet high-end restaurants, perfect for sampling wild ingredients such as banana prawns, crocodiles and kangaroo. Here is our guide to the best places to eat in Darwin .

Best Asian restaurants in Darwin

Whether you’re feasting on Sri Lankan string hoppers, pork-stuffed Thai chicken wings or freshly made Vietnamese banh mi, you can tell that Darwin’s soul is in step with its closest neighbours.

1. Little Miss Korea

The hottest joint in Darwin is Little Miss Korea . Down a graffiti-filled laneway, the restaurant serves up the traditional Kimchi and Korean BBQ (think Bulgogi beef or Jaeyuk Gui Spiced Pork Belly) or just a more than ample a la carte. The wine list is small but well put together with the obligatory cocktails.

2. Smith Street Mall

For authentic, budget-friendly Asian delights, make a beeline for the arcades around the Smith Street mall. Don’t miss Roast & Noodle 328 for a cheap and cheerful Chinese barbecue and a mouth-watering prawn wonton soup.

If you love a bit of Vietnamese pho (and let’s face it who doesn’t) then head to the waterfront and slurp down some of the finest rice noodles with raw beef at kitschy-cool Chow.

The pan-Asian restaurant Hanuman may be an established favourite, but it still cuts it with an enticing mix of Indian, Thai and Nyonya flavours. Cool down on its fabulous deck and tuck into the signature clay pot oysters presented in an earthenware holder and served with vivid lemongrass and sweet basil sauce.

5. The Noodle House

The Noodle House opposite Hanuman is great for unfussy inexpensive quick and easy noodles.

6. Ella – by Minoli

A luxurious take on modern Sri Lankan cuisine. Ella – by Minoli promises a well-balanced mix of flavours, which pays homage to Sri Lankan food’s Ayurvedic properties, as well as creative and original cocktails.

For the menu, think mas cutlis fried meatballs with a chunky tomato tamarind sauce, crispy whitebait with curry-leaf mayonnaise, and wild-caught Australian king prawns slathered with Lankan butter, as well as black pepper pork belly, served with tamarind coconut sauce and pineapple salsa and much more.

Best Greek restaurants in Darwin

Darwin has a strong Greek heritage and you can indulge in home-style mezedes, juicy meats, grilled seafood and mama’s syrupy sweets on the deck at Yots , overlooking Cullen Bay Marina.

Best upmarket restaurants in Darwin

8. pee wee’s at the point.

With its sweeping views across Fannie Bay to Darwin, tables on the water’s edge under native fig trees, and innovative Top End favourites, Pee Wee’s at the Point is the ideal place to make the most of the balmy, tropical weather.

Appealing dishes such as buffalo carpaccio, tempeh bao buns and crocodile wrapped in betel leaf celebrate Territory produce.

An equally charming night out can be had at Char , an upmarket surf-and-turf restaurant in historic Admiralty House.

The beef (including 300-day grain-fed Wagyu rump) and the crispy fried whole baby barramundi are the stars of the menu, but it’s hard to resist a mojito under the lantern-lit trees.

10. Wharf 1

For the best crispy barramundi in Darwin drop in on Wharf 1 at the waterfront.

The crispy potatoes with Szechuan salt are incredibly addictive. (Image: Tourism NT)

Magnificent views of the harbour are matched with a selection of cured and raw plates (think carpaccio, cured salmon, charcuterie plates and tartare) and grilled meats or small share plates.

11. PepperBerry

One of the town’s best-rated restaurants can be found in one of Darwin’s top-rated hotels , PepperBerry at The Hilton Darwin. Its modern Australia menu features miso tempura crocodile with mango green chilli sauce, Black Angus steaks and baked Massaman market fish in a fine dining setting and gorgeous atmosphere.

Casual dining in Darwin

The most laid-back capital in Australia does casual dining better than most. The iconic Mindil Beach Markets are just one of several outstanding Darwin markets . Most locals can be found on a picnic blanket on the Nightcliff on a Sunday chowing down on a mic of food van and BYO dinner and drinks.

12. Nightcliff Foreshore’s food truck scene

Twenty minutes north of the CBD in artsy hub Nightcliff, a ‘village walk’ of new-breed food trucks has popped up alongside the suburb’s milky-blue ocean fringe.

an aerial view of Nightcliff Pool and Foreshore

The iconic Nightcliff Foreshore. (Image: Tourism NT)

Further north lies Teardrop Coffee (Monday to Saturday), a pop-up blue-and-white vintage van with the pick of early morning locations: a stand-up paddle boarder’s section of beach, set right by the Aralia Street and Casuarina Drive intersection. Here, owner Imogen Gough brews java beside a scattering of milk crates and a lush strip of lawn.

By night, just around the bend at the Seabreeze car park (Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays), you’ll find the jewel in the foreshore’s food truck crown. Cucina Sotto Le Stelle translates from Italian to ‘kitchen under the stars’. In his mobile restaurant, chef Benjamin Matthews wood-fires traditional pizzas, while diners share long, communal tables set beneath illuminated flame trees.

Try the risotto with NT squid ink, garlic and blue swimmer crab. But do take note that the menu here shifts with the seasons, so while you may not always find your favourite, you can be assured the freshest produce Matthews can get his hands on.

13. Hot Tamale

For a spicy, funky Mexican feed down on the water, look no further than Hot Tamale . As well as the usual suspects, this water-view restaurant dishes up raw snapper ceviche with local tropical fruits, hot pork shoulder served in steaming tamale, spiced chicken, topped with cocoa and dried fruit mole and much more.

a table top view of Mexican dishes at Hot Tamale

Head to Hot Tamale if you’re craving Mexican food. (Image: Tourism NT)

If you want to save on the dollars, arrive for Hot Tamale’s ‘Loco Arvos’ at 4pm to 6pm for $6 tacos, sangria and beers, as well as $12 spicy or frozen margaritas. Now that’s a perfect sunset pairing!

14. Crustaceans on the Wharf

A classic surf and turf restaurant on the Darwin waterfront at Stokes Hill Wharf. Pull up a chair outside, and order from the enormous menu, which includes crocodile fillet skewers, grilled squid, sizzling chilli prawns, grilled beef and lobsters, wild barramundi, Northern Territory mud crabs (when in season), and Moreton bay bugs.

15. The Oyster Bar

If you’ve staked money that Darwin is ‘not an oyster kind of palace’, you can just put your cash on one of the waterside tables of the Oyster Bar . Located at the Darwin Waterfront Precinct, as well as Coffin Bay oysters served up every which way (natural, Kilpatrick, Thai, with caviar …), you can also opt for house pickled octopus, coconut crumbed prawns, pork belly bites and popcorn crocodile with salad and bush tomato relish.

Happy hour runs from 4pm (5pm Fridays).

Darwin’s ‘clubs’

16. darwin ski club.

For an unencumbered beverage and an open outlook over a classic Top End sunset, many Darwinites will rightfully recommend Darwin Ski Club .

a chef preparing a meal at Darwin Ski Club

Enjoy flavourful casual dining options.

Grab a table on the manicured lawns, choose your fave bottled beer and watch the boats bob up and down in Fannie Bay, the palm trees reminding you that, hey, you’re in the tropics now. The bistro food here is also on the rise.

Other options include the Darwin Sailing Club or the Darwin Trailer Boat Club . They’re all neighbours that share the beachfront linking Mindil with Fannie Bay.

Fun Darwin restaurants and bars

We’ve previously written about our favourite bars in Darwin , but have included a few more options for a bevvy and a feed below.

17. Deckchair Cinema

The open-air Deckchair Cinema (April to October) has very little chance of being interrupted by rain and it screens an intelligent array of films seven nights a week (on the Darwin Waterfront). There’s a licensed bar and decent food to help you enjoy the show (no BYO) with double-session marathons for the buffs. Definitely one of our favourite things to do in Darwin.

people watching a movie at an open-air cinema in Darwin

18. Lola’s Pergola

Lola’s Pergola is a cabaret and carnival-themed restaurant and bar in the harbour-side precinct of Cullen Bay.

It is the sister bar to Monte’s Lounge, an Alice Springs staple with a cracker of an outdoor area and more atmosphere than you’ll find at a footy grand final.

Lola’s serves up another NT newbie, too, a draught beer from local Darwin label One Mile Brewery. Cheekily, the beer’s name is drawn from the knock-off time for public servants: 4:21.

19. Nirvana

If you like to mix spice with music, then head to Nirvana on a Tuesday evening. It’s jam night where plenty of talented Darwin musicians pick up a sax or play impromptu drum sets. Fantastic cocktails – try the whisky sour – and Thai/Malay/Indian food is consistently flavoursome too.

The Northern Territory’s tropical capital city of Darwin is a mecca for outdoor adventure, sumptuous flavours and cultural experiences. The waterfront city is a delightful hub for exploring the rugged wilderness of the Kimberley, one of Australia’s most unique natural treasures.

The picturesque Darwin Harbour provides sublime cruising grounds to enjoy the luxury of a superyacht charter. With refreshing ocean breezes and breath-taking landscapes to gaze upon, this is a truly unique setting for superyacht charters, where you can indulge in luxury amenities, lounge on the sun deck and take to the water on toys and tenders. For more superyacht adventure in the region, the Tiwi Islands offer a great opportunity to take your private yacht to a different setting, where you can enjoy the tropics of the Arafura Sea and incorporate activities such as fishing into a charter itinerary.

Croc encounters

The Northern Territory has more crocodiles than anywhere else in the world, and naturally there plenty of opportunities to meet these incredible creatures around Darwin. There are two types of crocodiles that reside in the area, the freshwater crocodile and the fiercer saltwater crocodile. Measuring at an average of 5 metres in length and weighing up to 500 kilograms, the saltwater crocodiles are the largest and most aggressive of the species.

Crocodiles have called this area of the world their home for over 200 million years, and you can spot them in the wild as you cruise the mangrove-lined banks, rivers and wetlands. In the heart of the city, you can visit Crocosaurus Cove to see the world’s largest display of Australian reptiles, where the Cage of Death gives brave souls the chance to swim with saltwater crocodiles up close.

National parks

Much of Darwin’s natural splendour is concentrated on land, with 24 national parks and 73 nature reserves and conservation areas to explore. The parks will reward you with spectacular scenery which can be discovered on guided bushwalks, leading to majestic waterfalls for a refreshing dip. This is a unique opportunity to learn about native plants, birds and animals as well as the Aboriginal culture of the Northern Territory. Kakadu, Uluru and Nitmiluk are among the unmissable national parks where you will immerse yourself in remote wilderness.

Darwin’s culinary scene has influences from over 50 nationalities, which ensure you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to dinner time. Savour the exquisite tastes of fresh regional produce and specialities such as barramundi and mud crab, or sample South East Asian cuisine and even flavours of Greece in the many celebrated restaurants. Dining in Darwin is very much an experience in and of itself.

The horizons of endless exploration

With the Evolution of the Species, Charles Darwin theorized that all species survive and thrive through evolution. Cantiere delle Marche has embraced this notion, channeling it in their inaugural product line: the Darwin Class.

The explorer yachts of the Darwin Class epitomize the maximum level of adaptability to Owners’requests. This line’s resounding success can be attributed, in no small part, to its exceptional adaptability, combined with unrivalled design and technical characteristics.

Since the shipyard establishment, a total of thirteen Darwins ranging from 86 to 115 feet have been delivered and sailed to the most remote areas of the world. Robust, reliable, the Darwins are the archetype of explorer yachts.

Yacht Features

Engine room

The engine room serves as the beating heart of the Darwin Class, embodying the principles of spaciousness, functionality, ease of maintenance, durability, and cleanliness in every aspect. The generous interior dimensions, combined with a meticulously designed layout for each piece of machinery, ensure effortless maintenance.

From the use of Cupro Nickel piping to the integration of remote-controlled valves and parallel automatic generators, every component within the engine room adheres to the same stringent standards typically reserved for much larger vessels. Moreover, our water treatment systems, including black and grey water as well as bilge sludge treatment, incorporate proven technologies employed on high-intensity, 24/7 operating mercantile ships.

The hull is built with steel grade A and the superstructure in light aluminum 5083, a combination that lowers the centre of gravity of the vessel increasing safety and stability. The thickness of the steel plates at the bottom of the hull is 12 mm, exceeding the requirements of standard classification.

yachts restaurant darwin

The Darwin Class offers a versatile space that caters to the Owner's preferences during their sea adventures. Whether the Owner is an avid diver, a dedicated fisherman, or a water sports enthusiast, the lazarette can be customized with the necessary equipment and machinery to optimize the Owner's chosen activity. Our meticulous engineering ensures that the storage area remains organized, tidy, and keeps the Owner's belongings secure even in challenging sea conditions. Alternatively, for those moments when the Owner simply wishes to bask in the sea's beauty, the lazarette can be effortlessly transformed into a well-appointed laundry and storage space.

We believe that beauty and performance are inseparable values that together enable the ship- owner to enjoy the very best sensations every minute of his life a board. The Sun Deck of the Darwin Class is superior in size to those on other vessels of a corresponding length, a true deck on which one can relax, have lunch, sunbathe, train or simply entertain a number of guests for a cocktail or party aboard.

Sergio Cutolo

Once again, the joint effort between a shipyard with an amazing vision of the market and its customer’s needs, and a clever design engineering is proving to be a winning formula!

After having presented the new Darwin 90 and 115 in Cannes, how would you position this Darwin 107’ in the range? The new Darwin 107’is quite close to the 115’ in terms of length. The design has started from the specific requirement of the Client, a very expert and knowledgeable yacht man, who has asked us a very family oriented version of the Darwin Class also considering that the crew is virtually part of the family, after so many years working for the same Principal. Obviously the aesthetic choices and design details of this Darwin 107’ are completely in line with what I defined in the last issue of this newsletter as the Darwin 2.0: the first real refreshing of this range since the launch of the Darwin 86 three years ago.

Let’s go deeper into the Darwin 107’ design. The 107' represents a very clever compromise as far as the technical contents, the volume and the price are concerned. There is no doubt that it is ‘a lot of boat’ for the size and its intrinsical contents are definitely the highest possible on the market today. It is based on a new naval platform, with width and length of construcion significatevely incremented if compared to the previous yachts delivered by CdM. The waterlines, even if based on the previous succesful experiences, have been optimized with Final Element Analysis in cooperation with the Marin Dutch Institute, granting to the owner the best efficiency, seaworthiness and performance in all conditions. This is of paramount importance importance, keeping in mind that this Vessel will cruise up to the North West Passage and the guests will be onboard for many days also during long passages. As I said before when presenting the Darwin 90 and 115, the refresh of the design it is evident looking at this yachts, but at the same time it is very difficult to recognize it in its single elements: The 107’ is in all respects a Darwin Class at first sight.

What would you identify as the strengths of the Darwin 107’? As far as we have realized working side by side with the owner, its captain and the staff at CdM, the main peculiarities of this design are the simplicity of the basics of the engineering of this project (which doesn’t mean a simple project…) which has been thought as usual for the Darwins to be hyper reliable, and the extreme personalization and customization of the details in order to satisfy in full the owner’s needs together with the ones of his crew. In any case, it is very important to stress that this platform, for its characteristics, it is very flexible and it adapts perfectly to many different needs: this is why – at the moment – it is already used by the shipyard for different commercial proposals.

Great views and location The food here is nothing special - standard Club/Pub food which I rate a 3 out of 5 - but the views and location are outstanding. This is a wonderful spot to cool down on a hot dry season afternoon with a few drinks and dinner while watching the sun set over the Arafura sea!

Actually a 3.5/5 star experience, however I am giving the benefit of the doubt and rounding up. Upfront, the chief selling point of dinner here is the wonderful outdoor setting that overlooks the bay. Right over the rock wall sits several tiny sail boats, rolling in the tide as the sun sets in the distance. The community feel was excellent. Dozens of tables on the lawn, each filled nearly to their capacity with families and the like chatting and dining. That being said, since it is busy, the wait can be a while for food. A good while. It may be a benefit to arrive early, or get a side salad while waiting. The menu isn't spectacular, but they have a good spread of seafood to choose from. I ordered a fettuccine and it was average. One of my friends was not into the Ceasar salad that arrived well after the rest of the table's food. She didn't eat it. I would come back because the setting is so lovely.

Savored every passing second of this sunset as the day slipped into the night while enjoying dinner

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Darwin

When it comes to navigating the tranquil waters of Darwin, Northern Territory, sailors often find themselves at a crossroads: should they opt for the timeless elegance of a sailing boat or the spacious comfort of a catamaran? Yachting.Rent is here to help make that decision clearer and tailored to your sailing desires.

The traditional sailing boat epitomizes a deep-rooted maritime legacy. Its sleek design, characterized by a single hull, offers an intimate connection with the sea. As the boat cuts seamlessly through the waves, one can feel the rhythm of the ocean and the whispers of age-old seafaring tales. The advantage of this vessel lies in its ability to offer a genuine, unfiltered sailing experience. The slender profile, coupled with its deep hull, ensures that sailors can navigate narrower channels and explore hidden alcoves along Darwin’s coastline. Furthermore, the tactile experience of managing sails and rigging draws sailors closer to the art of true navigation, making the journey as exhilarating as the destination.

On the other hand, the catamaran presents a modern take on maritime luxury. With its twin hulls, the catamaran offers unparalleled stability, making it an ideal choice for those new to sailing or those who prioritize comfort above all else. The expansive deck space is perfect for sunbathing, group activities, or simply enjoying the panoramic views of the Darwin seascape. Below deck, the cabins and living spaces are generally more spacious than their counterparts on traditional sailing boats, providing an added layer of comfort during overnight trips. The wide beam of the catamaran also means that it can anchor closer to shore, allowing easy access to beaches and lagoons.

In conclusion, whether you’re an avid sailor seeking to reconnect with traditional navigation or a group of friends wanting a comfortable and luxurious sea adventure, Yachting.Rent in Darwin has something for everyone. Your choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran will ultimately depend on the kind of experience you seek. Both vessels offer unique perspectives of Darwin’s stunning coastal beauty, ensuring that regardless of your choice, the journey will be unforgettable.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
