  • December 12, 2023

Dufour 44 partnership with Sunsail

International yacht sales and charter companies Sunsail and The Moorings announced a new partnership with French sailing yacht manufacturer Dufour Yachts, who has been evolving its range for more than 50 years. The new partnership cements a long-term collaboration which will see Dufour Yachts become the exclusive supplier of monohull sailing yachts for Sunsail and The Moorings.

The technical departments of both Sunsail and The Moorings have worked alongside Dufour Yachts to ensure that the new Dufour products will be well positioned to meet the needs of its customer base. Sunsail anticipates the arrival of its first batch of 25 Dufour Yachts in the spring of 2024 for its Mediterranean destinations. This will include four models between 37 and 53 feet, including the Dufour 37 (Sunsail 37.3), the Dufour 41 (Sunsail 41.3), the new Dufour 44 (Sunsail 44.3 and Sunsail 44.4) and the Dufour 530 (Sunsail 53.5). The second and larger order will be manufactured in the fall of 2024 for the Caribbean winter season (2024-2025), and for the Mediterranean 2025 season for both The Moorings and Sunsail.

Offering a luxury range of sailing yachts with a modern design, sleek deck layout and superior quality finishes, the Dufour brand is known for its ease of sailing, stability and performance.

“We are thrilled to announce a new partnership with Dufour Yachts, for all new monohulls arriving as part of our charter fleets,” said Franck Bauguil, VP of Yacht Ownership and Product Development for The Moorings and Sunsail. “We are looking forward to a long-term partnership and a high level of collaboration, that has already started on the new Dufour products. There is a natural convergence between our companies concerning product design, interior layouts, equipment levels and setting the stage for an unparalleled charter experience.”

Franck Bauguil and Romain Motteau

Romain Motteau, Deputy CEO at Fountaine Pajot/Dufour Yachts Group, added: “We are delighted with this new partnership, built upon a shared long-term vision. At Dufour Yachts, we strive to design yachts that cater to the evolving demands of yacht owners and charterers seeking dream holidays. Our three core pillars of comfort, sailing sensations and respect for the oceans align perfectly with the ethos of Sunsail and The Moorings.”

The new Dufour Yachts will be available through Sunsail and The Moorings’ Yacht Ownership Programs, as a unique option for those who are interested in yacht ownership but are limited in leisure time or by budget. The program guarantees a steady monthly income or reduced purchase price, while allowing ample sailing opportunities throughout the year,   access to an array of global destinations, and eliminating the typical operating, insurance and maintenance expenses associated with boat ownership.

“I want to thank the senior team of the Dufour Group, Romain Motteau, Steven Guedeu and Laurent Fabre in the USA, for making the process easy and pleasant,” said Bauguil. “Special thanks to the Dufour Team, Nicolas Berenger and Romain Lucas, for their expertise and willingness to listen. My appreciation goes to my dedicated team members, Antony Wighting, Global Technical Director for Travelopia Yachts, and John Lefevre, our Global Purchasing and Logistics Manager, for their unwavering dedication throughout this process.”

More About Yacht Ownership with Sunsail and The Moorings

In addition to an extensive variety of cruising vacations, Sunsail and The Moorings’ Yacht Ownership Program has worked with more than 5,000 owners since its creation in 1971. With a fleet of yachts covering more than 20 destinations worldwide, it remains the only program of its kind to guarantee a monthly income, according to a company spokesperson. The program aims to help cruisers of all abilities, from first-time adventurers to seasoned sailors, spend more time on the water enjoying the best parts of owning a boat.

Dufour Yachts – About the Brand

In 1957 a mechanical engineer named Michel Dufour, became convinced that composite technologies and materials would transform the marine industry.

He envisioned that extraordinary adventures would be achievable by ordinary people and founded Dufour Yachts in La Rochelle, France, where it stands today as one of the worlds largest sailboat builders.

In 1964 he built his first boat, by 1971 production had evolved to 300 units a year out of the facility just outside of La Rochelle. Dufour Yachts had been established.

The 70’s & 80’s saw continued growth and during the 1990’s the “Classic Range” was born which revolutionised the industry in terms of comfort and design.

Todays Grand Large & Exclusive range embrace all the history and passion of Dufour Yachts and demonstrate their tireless efforts to lead the way in yacht production and design.

Dufour Yachts - About the Brand

Construction Techniques

Hull Every hull is moulded in a single piece using a method called contact moulding. Two-piece hull moulds are meticulously cleaned and prepared before the gel coat is sprayed onto the waxed surface.

Layers of fibreglass sheets are then applied with predetermined and specific quantities of resin. Each layer is rolled out to expel any air bubbles and the layers are built up in various thicknesses depending on the area and strength required.

The final composite hull is released from the split mould, the key benefit of which is that it allows for a pronounced flange onto which the deck structure is bonded. This flange creates additional integrity and strength for the hull to deck joint.

Structural Grid Laid inside the hull is a structural grid or counter mould. This enhances the structural characteristics absorbing and distributing the loads from the keel and rig. This grid also allows for a consistent position of the bulkheads and furniture and a clean internal finish for easy maintenance and cleaning.

Decks By contrast, the decks are made by a process called resin injection.

Layers of dry laminate are sandwiched between two moulds before resin is pumped in at high pressure to saturate the dry fibres. This ensures a totally equal distribution of resin to all areas of the deck.

Once cured this process creates lighter yet stronger structure which is free from imperfections and offers increased head room.

Dufour Yachts - About the Brand

The hull is made up using a single skin layup and a PVC cored stiffener.

The rudder is a semi-elliptical shape with a thick structure to create a perfect grip, feel and balance. The shaft is stainless steel with a stainless steel frame encased in epoxy foa,.

Self-aligning rudder bearings are supplied from JP3 systems.

All the interior furniture is built in a dedicated factory in La Rochelle cut precisely by CNC machines.

Bulkheads are laminated directly onto the hull and the furniture is carefully assembled, fastened and bonded together.

The marine-grade plywood panels come in thicknesses between 12 and 18mm.

The interior side panels are made from Alpi engineered wood, perfectly replicating the patterns and grain of natural wood.

Alpi wood offers a hard finish resistance to humidity and UV

Then all around the boat, you will notice the generous use of solid wood frames and trims.

The varnish is used without any tint for fast and easy repair.

Floorboards are engineered laminate to create a strong outer coating for great protection from abrasion and scratching.

The galley and heads surfaces are all made from Corian which is a solid non-porous material that is highly durable, easy to clean and aesthetically pleasing.

First look: Dufour 41 – better performance and simpler maintenance

  • Theo Stocker
  • February 23, 2023

The new Dufour 41 comes from the pen of designer Umberto Felci and features many of the same tricks which made his Dufour 37 so appealing

dufour yachts contact

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

The new Dufour 41 follows hot on the heels of the Dufour 37 in terms of design, focusing on more space, better performance and simpler maintenance. There’s more living space on board and on deck further than ever before, with a bigger cockpit than the larger Dufour 430. With a beam of 4.3m also matching the metre-longer 430, designer Umberto Felci has given the boat a fuller bow and full-length hull chines.

The huge saloon has been pushed all the way out to the hull sides and either a large island berth in an owner’s cabin forward, or – amazingly – in the four cabin version two cabins forward, both with full-width double berths.

The boat is aimed at private owners but the potential to squeeze in 10 berths by converting the saloon into a fifth double will certainly appeal to charter companies. Extensive ‘catamaran-style’ hull windows increase light below, as well as more opening ventilation and easier movement between the different space below all help to make the boat feel more spacious. The trademark outside grill and galley is in the transom seat between the two wheels, for use when the full-width bathing platform is down.

dufour yachts contact

In terms of sailing, she has a deep, balance single spade rudder pushed forward to keep it submerged and twin wheels, to minimise drag and maximise feel on the helm. Decks have been kept completely clear, with both German mainsheet and optional genoa car tracks led aft along the coachroof – a self-tacking jib is standard.

The anchor stows via a windlass to a below-deck locker – there’s no hatch on deck so chain twists are dealt with from the forward cabin.

Weight has been saved in the hull and put into the keel, enabling a mast a metre taller than her predecessor, for better light wind performance and the boat comes in three specs: Adventure, Ocean and Performance. The latter can have a longer boom to enable the mainseet to be led to a fixed point in the cockpit for more control.

Teak is replaced with sustainable timber from Panama and ALPI wood throughout. The boat can be fitted with electric propulsion and a genset to extend the range of the batteries.

Dufour Yachts: Performance-Based Monohulls

For more than 50 years, Dufour has been creating yachts with a strong distinctive design that has made it one of the most respected and loved yacht manufacturers the world has ever seen. Now merging with Fountaine Pajot, the Dufour brand continues to be a major force on the world’s waters.

Yachts and the growth of sailing across the world likely wouldn’t have been possible without Michel Dufour’s designs more than 50 years ago. By respecting both the lifestyle and performance of yacht sailing, Dufour saw the need for meticulous design to bring together a vibrant helm with a stable and steady hull form.

Dufour took that passion and created some of the world’s most incredible yachts, while the Dufour factory developed into a production line with its sights set solidly on quality and precision.

That passion continues today at the Dufour plant located in the heart of France’s incredible sailing culture in La Rochelle – all on the same grounds for the entire company’s history. The shipyard is one of the world’s largest and supports more than 450 employees – many of whom enjoy sailing themselves – while being a major focal point for the French sailing community.

In 2002, legendary yacht designer Umberto Felci brought his incredible skill for the design of race-winning yachts to the Dufour team, setting a new benchmark for yacht design. His yachts have spectacular lines, comfortable ergonomics, and most importantly, incredible performance.

Exterior Design

Dufour Yachts have always been iconic. Even from far away, the brand has been recognizable to sailing enthusiasts and novices alike. That foundation came from Michel Dufour’s original designs and continues to this day under the guidance of Felci.

With hard lines, a thin waterline beam, and a distinguished bowsprit, Dufour’s new era has been driven by Felci’s vision and Dufour’s history.

Interior Design

While the deck and exterior may boast performance, thrills and speed, the interior is designed with quality and comfort in mind. The Dufour team has made the spacious interior simple for a reason – to fit you.

When it comes to the interior, Dufour wants to make you and your passengers feel safe, comfortable and relaxed. Need a private area for a relaxing evening? Dufour can provide a secluded escape with its captain’s quarters. For those interested in chartering their yacht, there is an option with two cabins forward and an extra bathroom.

Dufour 61

Deck and Rigging

Dufour offers three rig and deck plans to best fit your needs:

EASY – The design offers comfort and simplicity with winches and clutches all positioned on the coaming.

OCEAN – This package offers more trimming possible, more controls on the coach roof all within helms’ reach.

PERFORMANCE – Boating a taller mast, bigger sail area and option for a deeper keel for more thrills and fun on the water.

Dufour Yacht Design

Dufour remains a leader because of its innovation by pushing trends forward. That’s why Felci’s firm has created three new design trends for three different atmospheres:

Boston – For those who love the traditional staples of sailing but want the modern touches and perfect lines right down to the finish for the yacht.

Europe – Today’s finest interior design comes to life with contemporary finishes.

Millenium – Trending to a new level for those who want the modern graces, with key metal details and electric blue fabrics.

Dufour Yachts :: How the Boats Are Built (Part 1)

Dufour Yachts :: How the Boats Are Built (Part 1)

January 27, 2015 10:56 am

All Dufour Yachts are built in La Rochelle, France. They all combine fine hand craftsmanship with innovative high-tech construction techniques. It all starts with the hull, and this is how it’s done.

It actually all starts in a hull mold (pictured above). It starts with a flawless, highly polished 2-piece mold and then spray layers of gelcoat that form the outer layer of each hull. Each hull is then laid up with a precise, highly-engineered number of layers of fiberglass, resin, and various core materials that are all placed in each mold by hand.

Dufour Hull Shape

Here you can see the hull is beginning to take shape. Notice the layers of fiberglass and resin that have already been applied. Also notice how the rudder area is reinforced. All molds are built on special rollers (pictured below) so they can be rotated in-place. This makes it much easier for workers to lay the various layers.

Dufour Underside

This shot shows the underside of one of the molds. And as you can see, they are extremely well-built to extremely high tolerances so every hull comes out perfect. You can also see how much they can be rotated in place. Rotating molds speed production and increase quality because they are much easier to work on than static molds.

Dufour Yachts 500GL Fiberglass

All Dufour hulls below 50-feet are built of solid fiberglass while the 500 GL (pictured above) and the 560 GL are laid up with solid fiberglass below the waterline and PVC core above the waterline to provide strength and stiffness. This photo also shows how workers reinforce high-load areas such as chainplate connections and keel areas with increased layers of fiberglass and resin.

Another important element of hull lamination is the fact that Dufour uses 2-part molds as you can see in the photos above. This makes it easy to release the finished hull from the mold, and it also allows for an inward-facing flange that forms a strong and elegant inward-facing hull-to-deck joint.

Dufour Structural Grid

One of the first elements that’s added to freshly laid-up hull is the structural grid. This shot also shows what the inward-facing flange looks like and some of the other early tasks that are done at this stage like cutting out the hull ports and installing a strip of PVC core material to the aft area of the hull to provide increased stiffness.

Clean Factory = Clean Yachts

As a result of the high attention to detail paid in the early stages of construction, each hull comes out of the mold looking clean, sexy, and fast.

Dufour Yachts Factory

Dufour is never satisfied with the status quo and their high-tech facility allows Dufour to build the best because every element of the production line is constantly being upgraded. Dufour is always to looking to improve efficiency and performance.
