The 5 Most Expensive Superyachts in the World

By Brett Berk

The 5 Most Expensive Superyachts in the World

Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available for purchase, the prices of the most expensive superyachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and as such, the global superyacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The world’s über-wealthy think of their superyachts as toys, and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.

Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive superyachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecy—often intentionally—to protect privacy or to shield the assets from taxation or seizure. Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive superyachts in the world.

Super yacht Dubai is moored at the Doha Sailin

5. Dubai ($400 million)

This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.

The 147 meter mega luxury yacht of Manchester City soccer club owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan from UAE

4. Topaz ($527 million)

Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch, Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built Lürssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.

The longest luxury yacht in the world the 180m long 'Azzam' is visible at the Luerssen shipyard

3. Azzam ($600 million)

This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by Lürssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.

Eclipse the private luxury yacht of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich anchors in Fethiye district of Mugla

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)

In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)

History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real, and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-carat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

Magic Johnson and "Aquila"

When you’re Magic Johnson, a simple European getaway just won’t do. You have to take in the continent by boat.

The NBA legend and entrepreneur is currently enjoying some time cruising around the Mediterranean onboard the Aquila , a 281-foot superyacht . And the Lakers great and his wife Cookie have invited along a star-studded group of pals, including Samuel L. Jackson and LL Cool J, to join in on the experience.

Magic, who TMZ says likes to spend a month across the Atlantic each summer, has gone all out for his latest vacation. The Aquila is the largest boat built in the US since the 1930s, according to its Burgess charter listing . Originally developed by Derektor in 2010, the vessel sailed under the name Cakewalk until it was sold and completely refitted in 2016. The renewed, four-deck yacht has even more space from which its passengers can gaze upon cities like Corfu, Capri and Cervo, and is perfect for entertaining a one very large man and his family and friends.

The yacht has a massive owner’s suite with a massage room, salon and private deck that overlooks the bow, along with six other spacious guest suites. There’s also a cinema room, gym, two more massage rooms. When it comes time for entertaining, there’s a saloon called the London Bar, a beach club at sea level and a dedicated party deck with its own DJ booth, AV system and smoke machine. The interior’s pièce de résistance, though, is a 36-foot “waterfall” chandelier that stretches from the sun deck to the lower deck.

Other amenities on the Aquila include a limousine tender, a deck jacuzzi, aquapark, trampoline and all the water toys you could ever want (think: jet skis, kayaks and wakeboards). The yacht, which has a 50-foot beam, is also manned by a crew of 28. It’s powered by two 3,306 hp MTU engine and has a top speed of 17 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots.

As you may have guessed, a boat like this doesn’t come cheap. The superyacht is reportedly worth over $150 million . Johnson is only chartering the vessel, but even that will set him back nearly €1 million (or about $1.2 million) a week, according to the listing. One thing is clear: No. 32 loves spending time on the Aquila . In fact, this isn’t his first time he’s rented the vessel. He also took it out on vacation back in 2019, according to TMZ . And honestly, who can blame him?

An unfinished 168-foot superyacht abandoned in 2007 just sold after going up for auction with bids starting at $1.5 million — see inside the 40% complete yacht

  • An unfinished superyacht abandoned just before the Great Recession was up for auction starting at $1.5 million.
  • The 168-foot motoryacht could cost between $16 million to $25 million to complete.
  • Take a look at the nearly half-finished motoryacht that was just sold on November 15.

The auction for a 168-foot superyacht starting at only $1.5 million — an absolute steal — has officially closed.

superyacht 1 million

The catch? It's only about 40% finished and the winning bidder is now responsible for bringing the 168-foot Trinity Tri-Deck yacht to life.

superyacht 1 million

The final sales price of the vessel, sold through Boathouse Auctions, is not public.

superyacht 1 million

But Jack Mahoney, a director at Boathouse Auctions, told Insider in an email that there were 32 interested groups that resulted in three final bids.

superyacht 1 million

And both the buyer and seller were ultimately "pleased with the outcome," Mahoney said.

superyacht 1 million

Yacht and boat sales have continued to skyrocket throughout the COVID-19 pandemic with some ultra-luxury yachts selling for millions of dollars above their initial asking price.

superyacht 1 million

Source: Insider

And the ultra-wealthy's demand for luxury homes at sea has yet to slow down.

superyacht 1 million

Superyacht sales hit a record high in 2021 even as manufacturers struggled to keep up with demand amid supply chain and staffing problems.

superyacht 1 million

This incomplete yacht may not be turnkey like the other vessels that have been sold during superyacht market's boom, but at least it is semi-customizable.

superyacht 1 million

The previous owner of the 168-foot Trinity was formerly owner of the now-defunct luxury yacht-building company Trinity Yachts.

superyacht 1 million

In the face of the Great Recession, the project was abandoned in 2007 when it was only 40% complete.

superyacht 1 million

Since then, the half-finished semi-displacement yacht had been stuck in storage where it was regularly checked.

superyacht 1 million

After several years, the vessel was finally put up for auction on Boathouse Auctions starting at a cool $1.5 million …

superyacht 1 million

… a bargain compared to other — albeit complete — superyachts.

superyacht 1 million

For now, the motoryacht is just a nearly completed shell of its potential (the aluminum hull and superstructure are about 95% done).

superyacht 1 million

But picture its potential as a six-stateroom, four-deck yacht with luxurious amenities like an elevator.

superyacht 1 million

Of the six staterooms, four for guests and two for the crew.

superyacht 1 million

The customizable yacht can also accommodate spaces like a galley, formal dining area, owner's lounge …

superyacht 1 million

… deck with a 12-person dining table …

superyacht 1 million

… several salons, and an outdoor lounge on the sun deck.

superyacht 1 million

It obviously wouldn't be a luxury superyacht without a large sun deck.

superyacht 1 million

The current owner can build out this lounge by adding a bar, dinette, outdoor galley, and more lounge seats to create the perfect space to bask under the afternoon sun.

superyacht 1 million

And when it's time to cool off in the water, the owners can head to the garage for access to toys like jet skis and a jet tender.

superyacht 1 million

Along with the half-complete motoryacht, the highest bidder also received several parts like engines and a watertight door …

superyacht 1 million

… as well as some help from the original Trinity Yacht's design and engineering team.

superyacht 1 million

When it's finally complete, the home at sea will be able to hit up to 23 knots with a less than eight-foot draft.

superyacht 1 million

But to finish the project, its owner will have to cough up at least $16 million for lower-end finishes, according to estimates from shipyards in Greece and Turkey, Mahoney, told Insider in October.

superyacht 1 million

If they want top-of-the-line amenities, the project could cost upwards of $25 million.

superyacht 1 million

To compare, buying a new yacht of this similar size could cost over $35 million, according to the 168-foot Trinity 2007's listing page.

superyacht 1 million

The unfinished yacht was likely far from inexpensive …

superyacht 1 million

… but with time, patience, and a few extra supplies, the yacht's new owner could find themselves saving close to $20 million.

It’s for the ultimate seafaring sports fan — and history buff.

A lavish superyacht designed to resemble a centuries-old galleon — and featuring full-sized basketball, tennis and handball courts — is being pitched by a California ship designer.

Steve Kozloff’s The Galleon involves eight decks boasting hoards of extravagant goodies that can be custom-arranged for buyers — who are wealthy enough to foot its roughly $750 million price tag.

The striking nearly 525-foot luxury ship, complete with four massive sails, could hold up to 200 guests and 150 crewmembers, Kozloff said.

“I liked the style of the Old World galleons, especially the glass work at the stern,’’ the ship designer told The Post on Tuesday. “I wanted to imitate that feature.

Illustration of The Galleon.

“Plus, I want to encourage the cruise industry to be more green,’’ he said of the yacht, which would have a hybrid diesel-electric engine in addition to its sails.

The ship’s planned features include the sports facilities, plus a pair of swimming pools and two “lazy rivers.”

It also includes a helipad and 4,500-square-foot hanger for high-flying guests, not to mention room for six speedboats, four submarines and other smaller watercraft.

Illustration of The Galleon.

Additional onboard entertainment could be found at the ship’s cafe, bar and restaurant.

Kozloff said the price depends on how far buyers want to plunk down on the yacht’s interior furnishings, adding that it would take about $750 million for it to be “properly outfitted.” He said the masts alone cost around $140 million.

The Galleon is considered an “explorer’’ yacht, meaning it could cruise the world at more than 20 mph with a steel hull able to cut through ice floes.

Its length is 70 feet less than the world’s longest yacht, the Azzam, which is reportedly owned by royals from the United Arab Emirates.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.

Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.

Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer.
This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley and an adjoining outdoor bar.
Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.

Bank Fraud Charges Added to Indictment Against Swiss Businessman in Connection to Russian Oligarch’s Superyacht

WASHINGTON – A superseding indictment, unsealed today, charges Vladislav Osipov, 52, a Russian national who resides in Switzerland, with five counts of bank fraud, in addition to charges previously lodged, in connection with the operation of a 255-foot luxury superyacht owned by the sanctioned Russian oligarch, Viktor Vekselberg.

The superyacht, registered in the Cook Islands, is known as the Motor Yacht (M/Y) Tango (International Maritime Organization number 1010703). The Tango was the first superyacht to be seized by the U.S. government under court order following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The new charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, FBI Special Agent in Charge Alvin Winston of the Minneapolis Field Office, and Task Force Klepto-Capture Co-Directors Michael Khoo and David Lim.

Osipov remains at large. The U.S. State Department today offered a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to his arrest and/or conviction. The reward is offered under the Transnational Organized Crime Rewards Program.

Osipov was previously indicted in November 2022 on multiple charges in connection with operating the superyacht that included conspiracy to defraud the United States; violations of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act; and money laundering. The superseding indictment brings the total number of charges to 17, and seeks the forfeiture of Tango and all fees, payments, and monies derived from services performed on its behalf.

According to the superseding indictment, despite U.S. sanctions that had been previously issued against Vekselberg in 2018, Osipov and a co-conspirator facilitated the operation of the Tango through the use of U.S. companies and the U.S. financial system, attempting to obfuscate Vekselberg’s involvement in the vessel.

“Facilitators of sanctions evasion enable the oligarchs supporting Vladimir Putin’s regime to flout U.S. law,” said U.S Attorney Graves. “The United States will not allow its financial institutions and persons to be manipulated or defrauded for the purposes of benefitting those who support tyranny.”

“The security of our financial systems and protection of our nation's economic integrity are of utmost importance,” said Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. of FBI Minneapolis. “The FBI will not relent in ensuring that U.S. law is upheld and that our financial institutions remain impervious to exploitation by those who support tyranny.”

Osipov served in senior positions in multiple companies controlled by Vekselberg. Among his many roles, Osipov functioned as Vekselberg’s personal manager of Tango. Osipov designed a complicated ownership structure of shell companies to hide Vekselberg’s ownership of the superyacht, despite that Vekselberg designed the vessel, was its sole user, and was the ultimate beneficial owner. The conduct enabled Vekselberg to evade the Treasury Department’s “Know Your Customer” regulations applicable to U.S. financial institutions and the reporting of transactions to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Vekselberg is described by the Treasury Department as the founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Renova Group, which is comprised of asset management companies and investment funds that own and manage assets in several sectors of the Russian economy, including tech and energy.

As alleged, after Vekselberg was sanctioned in April 2018, he hired a yacht management company in Palma de Mallorca, Spain to take over the management of Tango. Osipov and his employees instructed the yacht management company to avoid doing business with banks in Tango’s true name. The management company, thereafter, devised a scheme to use a false name for the yacht, “the Fanta,” to hide from financial institutions that payments were ultimately for the benefit of Tango and Vekselberg, a practice to which Osipov and his employees assented. The bank account for Tango thereafter bore the reference name “Fanta” on the bank records. Additionally, Osipov instructed employees of the superyacht, to include its captains, that they could continue to do business with U.S. companies despite sanctions, as it was up to the U.S. companies to decide what to do. Osipov further instructed the same employees that the yacht management company could organize payments for the superyacht in dollars, and then be reimbursed by Vekselberg (through Osipov) in Euros.

Thus, due to these instructions from Osipov, Vekselberg’s personal yacht manager, the superyacht’s management company and its employees conveyed false information to U.S. financial institutions and conducted business with U.S. companies, in an effort to avoid the impact of U.S. sanctions against Vekselberg. Tango employees used their own credit cards to purchase an array of items from U.S. companies on behalf of the superyacht, only to be reimbursed by the yacht management company. Tango employees ordered goods through use of a U.S. internet service provider as an intermediary, who then billed the same items back to the yacht management company. Items purchased included navigation and computer software, luxury monogramed bath robes, leather basket magazine holders, weather forecasting software, internet computing systems, satellite television, and teleconferencing software, all products of U.S.-origin products or services supplied by U.S. companies.

As a result of the obfuscations, U.S. financial institutions unknowingly processed hundreds of thousands of dollars of transactions for Tango that they otherwise would not have permitted had they known of Vekselberg’s involvement in the financial transaction. The financial institutions received information, all done in furtherance of the scheme designed by Osipov, that the goods were sold to the Tango employees, the U.S. internet service provider, and to “the Fanta.” Further, these payments and Vekselberg’s involvement in them were not reported to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

On April 4, 2022, Spanish law enforcement executed a Spanish court order freezing Tango. The Spanish acted following a request from the Department of Justice that it assist with the execution of a seizure warrant, issued in March 2022 by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, which alleged that Tango was subject to forfeiture based on violations of U.S. law.

The case is part of the Justice Department’s Task Force KleptoCapture, an interagency law enforcement task force dedicated to enforcing the sweeping sanctions, export restrictions, and economic countermeasures that the United States has imposed, along with its allies and partners, in response to Russia’s unprovoked military invasion of Ukraine. The task force leverages all the Department’s tools and authorities against efforts to evade or undermine the economic actions taken by the U.S. government in response to Russian military aggression.

The charges are merely allegations, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. If convicted of any offense, a defendant’s sentence will be determined by the court based on the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office. Valuable assistance has been provided by the Spanish Guardia Civil - Jefatura de Informacion - Unidad Especial Numero III (UCE-III). The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Karen P. Seifert and Maeghan Mikorski and Paralegal Brian Rickers, with valuable assistance provided by Paralegal Jorge Casillas and Legal Assistant Jessica McCormick, all of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs provided significant assistance in working with the Spanish authorities throughout this matter.

A private island off the Florida Keys for sale at $75 million: It includes multiple houses

Pumpkin Key, located off the Florida Keys near Key Largo. The entire private island along with a mainland house in the Key Largo Ocean Reef Club was listed at $75 million on Feb. 13, 2024 by Compass.

A 26-acre private island know as Pumpkin Key is on the market for $75 million.

The listing managed by Liz Hogan of Compass offers combo deal including a mainland home in Key Largo and the entire island with multiple amenities for convenient management of the estate.

"There are two ways this will sell," Hogan told USA TODAY in an interview. "Either it will go for a family looking for a family compound and a legacy property or a developer will buy it to build on the island and sell the parts."

The estate's current owner, a family from the Midwest, has used it as a family compound but its generations are growing out of it, Hogan said.

More: See retired Alabama football coach Nick Saban's $17.5 million Florida home

Listing includes mainland home with dock, 4-minute boat ride to island

The mainland home as part of the listing is on the Key Largo coast closest to Pumpkin Key, and includes a dock that stretches more than 100 feet long to be able to boat quickly between the mainland and the island.

The home is also part of the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, which Hogan says is a fully sufficient yearlong resort. It has its own airport for private jets, a member-only hotel, another marina and two 18-hole golf courses.

If a buyer wants to give up that house, the island has its own 23-slip marina capable of accommodating a mega-yacht and tennis courts that convert into a helicopter pad for the brief jet to Miami.

Private island listing comes with 2 homes, 3 apartments and office

The listing comes with:

  • A mainland house with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and a 140-foot dock
  • A ranch-style house on the island with three bedrooms, four-and-a-half bathrooms and a pool
  • Three apartments spread across two structures on the island, ranging from studio to two-bedrooms. The current owners have used these to house caretakers
  • A 23-slip marina on the island with a dock office and master quarters

Each structure on the island has fiber optic cable, water and electricity. The 11 undeveloped lots on the island have the infrastructure ready for building as well.

Hogan said an acre-lot on the mainland sold for $24.5 million recently.

As a hospital system crashes, Steward’s CEO rises above it all

A Bombardier Inc. Global 6000 business jet stood on display during a media event at Seletar Aerospace Heights in Singapore on Feb. 27, 2019.

Let’s begin by paying homage to the Bombardier Global 6000, among the most perfect forms of transportation ever created. How perfect? This private aircraft is nearly 100 feet long. It costs $62 million new. It has a range of 6,000 nautical miles, meaning it can fly nonstop from Aspen to London or New York to Moscow. It holds as many as 17 passengers in luscious club seats, never loses internet connectivity, and can be configured with a bedroom and full shower. It’s basically Air Force One without the president.

The Bombardier website, in fact, makes repeated references to an aircraft that befits “a head of state.” It’s the jet that whisked Taylor Swift from Tokyo back to the United States to watch her boyfriend win the Super Bowl.

But perhaps the ultimate seal of approval for the Bombardier Global 6000 comes not from any global leader or the most popular musical performer alive, but from someone slightly less known but no less discerning. It is the private jet that Steward Health Care Chief Executive Officer Ralph de la Torre has chosen to fly around the world.

Yes, that’s right. De la Torre, the proud owner of a $40 million, 190-foot superyacht and the most sophisticated sportfish boat ever built (cost: more than $15 million), is cruising the skies in one of the biggest and most luxurious private jets that money can buy — in this case, Steward’s money.

Ralph de la Torre.

And lest anyone think that I’m going to make the same mistake twice and miss a jet, I can definitively report that Ralph de la Torre likes things in pairs. Steward also operates a second private plane, a Dassault Falcon 2000LX that can easily soar nonstop from Boston to Europe with as many as a dozen passengers in ultra-luxury. Not to put too fine a point on it, but having a Falcon 2000LX as a spare jet is like having a Bentley as the beater you take to the town dump.

You, like me, might be wondering why a for-profit health care system with particularly fragile hospitals often located in low income communities might choose to spend tens of millions of dollars to own and operate two fabulously luxurious private jets, especially when the company is headquartered in a major airline hub like Dallas that has nonstop flights to virtually any destination that any normal person would want or need to go.

First, though, it’s worth noting that Steward didn’t seem particularly eager to have the public know about these jets. They were registered with the Federal Aviation Administration under the name of an aviation holding company called TVPX. That company, with offices in Concord, Mass., and North Salt Lake City, declares on its website that it creates trusts for airplane owners who “want to avoid unwanted public or media attention.” How did that one work out?

Fortunately, a kind person sent me the tail number to the Bombardier. That tail number opened all sorts of doors in the vast and fanatical private aviation community on the World Wide Web. One door showed that there was a second plane, another revealed a second ownership entity, yet another showed that a Steward executive and board member was affiliated with that other company, Management Health Services. Bottom line: Even Steward representatives didn’t push back on the notion that they fund both planes.

The thought did strike me that maybe de la Torre and his executive team were using these planes to embark on critical missions to deliver desperately needed supplies to his chain of woefully under-resourced hospitals. These jets are so sophisticated you can picture an airdrop of medicines and equipment at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center before they whooshed away to another city and another hospital in need.

So I sought the flight records for these planes to confirm that this was the case. Steward didn’t seem to make this easy, either, but a very accommodating gentleman affiliated with a strikingly informative aviation site, FlightRadar24 , was there to help. Within a day or two, I had a file in my email with every takeoff and landing for each plane in the past two-plus years.

Hmmm. Does Steward have hospitals in Santorini, Corfu, Athens, Naples (Italy, not Florida, but Florida, too), Madrid, Rome, Croatia, and the French Riviera? Or did an eager mariner simply need a ride to his yacht? What about the Bahamas, St. Kitts, Cabo San Lucas, Providenciales, Montego Bay, St. Maarten, and Antigua? And then there were all these flights to Panama and Ecuador, where I recently reported that his superyacht, the Amaral, had been moored. Coincidence?

There is no evidence that de la Torre was on all of these flights, because the planes are apparently available to other executives as well. But seriously, the staffs of Travel & Leisure and the Robb Report don’t spend this much time hurtling toward exotic destinations.

Here, I repeat a sincere and necessary caveat. This is not a screed against wealthy people with mansions and planes and very large boats. But that kind of wealth is supposed to go to those who create something that other people want, not a bunch of scheming private equity partners and executives who dismantle something that so many people need. Hospitals are public trusts.

The cabin of a Bombardier Inc. Global 6000 business jet.

It’s an interesting question, and not an esoteric one, about when immoral actions spill into illegal ones. Governor Maura Healey used the word “criminal” earlier this week when she excoriated Steward for its management of its nine Massachusetts hospitals, and said she basically wanted them out of the state. There are people who can look at how federal money has been spent and where it’s gone, and hospitals, Steward especially, have federal money coming in every day. Are they?

But back to the unanswered question of why a hospital company like Steward needs a pair of ultra-luxury jets capable of zipping around the world. The painfully obvious answer is, it absolutely doesn’t.

It especially doesn’t need it when hospital staffs are getting cut, when medical equipment is getting repossessed , when so many vendors aren’t getting paid, and when the quality of health care that it delivers is unquestionably diminished because the many great doctors and nurses and technicians in these hospitals lack the staff support they need and sufficient supplies.

And all the while, de la Torre and his private equity friends at Cerberus Capital Management have been living high, sky high in de la Torre’s case, off the money they made when they wrung hundreds of millions of dollars from a hospital system in dire need of resources and care.

Two other quick points. The Global 6000 was acquired by the Steward-related holding companies in 2020. The company that had it before that, which apparently purchased it brand new: Medical Properties Trust, the Alabama-based REIT that bought the land and hospital buildings from Steward, in a series of transactions that allowed a few people to get very rich while leaving Steward with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual rent. It’s hard to know what to make of that.

And Thursday, after I’d been asking about the jets this week, a Steward spokeswoman, Josephine Martin, called to say that the two planes were now for sale. The Falcon, she said, had recently been put on the market. The Global 6000 was listed as of Thursday.

“It’s part of a reset for Steward, selling down assets and working to be a different kind of company,” Martin said.

Maybe that should provide some satisfaction. Still, certain images remain: Chaos on the ground at so many Steward hospitals, state officials trying to prevent a crisis if any of them close, while Ralph de la Torre soars above it all in a plane built for a king. When bills went unpaid and cuts were made on personnel and supplies, there was always plenty of money for the jets.
