Not to be confused with the J&J half-tonner from 1983 (see ‘The Elan Story’, above), this is a fleet-footed performance cruiser introduced in 2002. She is a delight to sail, good-looking on the outside and endowed with well-finished joinery within. The hull is low, slim, sleek and elegant, with a long waterline, a deep, narrow keel and a high-aspect rudder. Under sail, she is both powerful and easy to handle with a small crew, acquitting herself surprisingly well in rough seas and pointing high in kinder conditions. The trade-off is that she’s a small boat down below. The saloon is narrow, with just 1.8m (5ft 9in) headroom, the galley and heads are compact and stowage is limited. She does, however, boast a big chart table that is comfortable to sit at, a decent-sized aft cabin and a surprisingly large hanging locker. There are two more berths in the forecabin, with sitting headroom.

A sailing story on Elan 31

Elan Yachts, 29. 07. 2019

One couple Staša and Boštjan with their Elan 31 named STABO built in 1987 left Adriatic sea and will attempt to circumnavigate the globe.

They started their journey on July 10 2019 from Izola and sailed along the western side of the Adriatic to Pescare. Stayed there in the marina for two days. During the voyage, there was a stop in Otranto for half an hour. On Wednesday night, they anchored in Santa Maria di Leuca. Hours of engine: 3 hours, interlaced NM 510. The conditions for sailing were very different; from no wind up to 30 knots.

Staša and Boštjan:  The boat is superb :-) Also in the light winds there is a nice sail. It's also great in the hard sea.

The Elan 31 is a popular yacht which is fast in light winds but also highly capable and easy to handle in more challenging conditions. The versatility of the 31 is equally important to the cruising family as it is to the race crew. The cruising family feels more in control and gains confidence in themselves and the boat. The more experienced owner will find that despite being a comfortable cruiser with a nice interior, the boat can still win races.

Built with an optimised keel, tall rig and high quality deck gear, the Elan 31 provides a total package which gives the owner and crew a rewarding sail. Powerful winches and extensive use of ball-bearing blocks makes for easy handling while the ergonomically-shaped cockpit is comfortable for cruising as well as racing.

Below deck the interior is laid out to feature a number of practical and comfortable solutions combined with fine craftsmanship. The deep heavy keel complements a well-balanced hull to ensure high stability and good control, even in adverse conditions.

The interesting thing about this no man's land of handicap rules we seem to be in now is that we are seeing a return of dual-purpose boats much like the boats of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Last month I received four dual-purpose boats and this month there are at least two, depending upon your view of the Sabre, maybe three.

This new Elan 31 designed by Rob Humphreys is another obvious attempt to do one boat that appeals to both racers and cruisers. I have always been a fan of Humphreys' work. The line of Elan models all have one thing in common-the Humphreys' trademark perky sheerline. I have the benefit of some photos of this boat and I can tell you confidently that this is a good looking boat. It looks a little bit "lumpy" in the drawings but as built it has a sweet appearance.

The hull profile shows the same skeg that we saw in the Sabre but this time it's proportionately much shorter and does not fair into the canoe body profile as it does on the Sabre. The rudder is on a vertical stock and the keel shows a large bulb. Overhangs are minimal and there appears to be a slight convexity to the bow profile. With a L/B of 2.94 this design breaks the 3 barrier and qualifies as a beamy boat. This fullness is carried out into both ends. The D/L is 190. Your draft choices are 6 feet and 4 feet, 11 inches. The keels are cast iron. There are no surprises in this hull shape that I can see other than an apparent fullness forward as indicated by the trace of the V-berth in plan view. Clearly Mr. Humphreys can draw a faster boat with an LOA of 30 feet, 10 inches, but in this case he had a variety of interior accommodation pressures to deal with and I think that is behind this beamy hull form.

It's pretty amazing when you look at this interior plan and consider what was considered adequate in a 30-footer 25 years ago. But if you added both bow and stern overhangs similar to what you would have seen in 1969 you would be looking at a 35-footer at least. The Elan is laid out with a huge double quarterberth that is enclosed to port. There is a head to starboard with a wet locker. The nav area looks big enough and the galley does not. However, it's only a 30-foot, 10-inch boat. The V-berths convert to a double berth with a filler piece. This basic layout has become widely used. If I'm reading the brochure and converting from metric accurately, there is only 6 feet of headroom in the saloon and galley. I can put up with less than standing headroom anywhere in a boat with the exception of the galley. This is a tough call on a 30-footer where the designer wants to keep the profile as low as possible.

The deck plan shows a large cockpit with the mainsheet traveler bisecting the cockpit well. A tiller is drawn and the specs do not list a wheel as an option. I like tiller steering and I have one of those handy tiller-activated autopilots for my own tiller-steered boat. It works very well and can be stowed away easily when not needed.

This cockpit is open to the swim step aft. Note that the cockpit coamings are cut away aft where the helmsman will sit. This seat area is angled to make it level when the boat is heeled about 15 degrees, making for a very comfy helming position. Teak pads on the deck here will have a good grip on the seat of your pants. Genoa tracks are well inboard and the decks are clear. There is an anchor well forward with a flush hatch.

The rig is the standard of the day-the swept-spreader, fractional type. The mast is deck stepped. The SA/D is 18.31. The Elan 31 is built in by Elan Marine in Slovenia.

Elan 31 (Humphreys)

Elan 31 (Humphreys) is a 30 ′ 2 ″ / 9.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Rob Humphreys and built by Elan Yachts starting in 2002.

Drawing of Elan 31 (Humphreys)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Shallow draft: 1.5m/4.92’ Not to be confused with an earlier (IOR 1/2 ton - 1983) ELAN 31 from the same builder.

In 2020 and 2021, the city of Moscow, Russia, has experienced two historical rainfall events that had caused major flooding of small rivers. Based on long-term observation datasets from the surrounding weather stations, regional mesoscale COSMO-CLM climate model results, and a detailed hydrological and water quality monitoring data, we performed a pioneer assessment of climate change and urbanization impact on flooding hazard and water quality of the urban Setun River as a case study. Statistically significant rise of some moderate ETCCDI climate change indices (R20mm and R95pTOT) was revealed for the 1966–2020 period, while no significant trends were observed for more extreme indices. The combined impact of climate change and increased urbanization is highly non-linear and results in as much as a fourfold increase in frequency of extreme floods and shift of water regime features which lead to formation of specific seasonal flow patterns. The rainstorm flood wave response time, involving infiltrated and hillslope-routed fraction of rainfall, is accounted as 6 to 11 h, which is more than twice as rapid as compared to the non-urbanized nearby catchments. Based on temporal trends before and after rainfall flood peak, four groups of dissolved chemicals were identified: soluble elements whose concentrations decrease with an increase in water discharge; mostly insoluble and well-sorted elements whose concentrations increase with discharge (Mn, Cs, Cd, Al); elements negatively related to water discharge during flood events (Li, B, Cr, As, Br and Sr); and a wide range of dissolved elements (Cu, Zn, Mo, Sn, Pb, Ba, La, Cs, U) which concentrations remain stable during rainfall floods. Our study identifies that lack of research focused on the combined impacts of climate change and urbanization on flooding and water quality in the Moscow urban area is a key problem in water management advances.

Moscow from Above

Moscow is without question one of the world's most important cities.  It's been the capital of  Russia since 1918 when it reclaimed the capital status from St. Petersburg following the Bolshevik Revolution.  This city on the Moscow River is now not only one of the great cities of Europe , it's the actually the center of the largest metropolitan area on the continent, and it's the only Alpha City in Eastern Europe .  Occupying a strategic position with respect to Russia's vast system of rivers , Moscow is a city which was destined for greatness by virtue of geography.  Its skyline is graced by the spires of the Kremlin, famous Eastern Orthodox churches and monasteries , gleaming skyscrapers of the Moscow City financial district (home to five of the seven tallest skyscrapers in Europe as of 2019), and the magnificent Moscow State University, the world's tallest college campus building.  Here are the best drone videos of magnificent Moscow, the host city for the 1980 Summer Olympics.  Aerial photo: " On the Moscow River " by AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Videosnebe .

Top contributor pushkinflyteam brings us this incredible albeit shocking drone video from Moscow as Europe's largest city was virtually shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic in the Spring of 2020. This DVOW nominated film opens with a shot looking toward the ultra-modern Moscow City skyscraper district.  Starting at about 1:20 there's a shot flying over the nearly-empty Krymsky Bridge, and at 3:35 you'll see the Church of Christ the Savior.  This video earned a nomination in the Lockdown category at the NYCDFF.

Check out this stunning drone video of Moscow in the throes of the Russian winter, compliments of former DVOW winner pushkinflyteam. At the :30 mark, there's an incredible shot looking over the Kremlin walls on the Moskva River.  At about 1:05, you'll see Red Square, on the opposite side of the Kremlin from the river. At 1:30, you'll see the Krymsky Bridge, just upstream from the Kremlin.  Other featured spots include the star-topped MSU building (1:55), the Pushkin Bridge (2:00), the Moscow City District (2:05), and more.

Christmastime on red square, moscow new year 2020 merry christmas, check out this jaw-dropping drone video of holiday-festooned moscow, russia by new airvuz contributor pushkinflyteam.  the video opens with an epic shot of the kremlin and the adjacent st. basil's cathedral, the aesthetic heart of europe's largest city.  the focus of much of the rest of the video is in and around red square, the city's largest public gathering place.  located just north of the kremlin, the square takes on an almost other-worldly look during the christmas season, replete with a giant ice-skating rink.  , moscow at sunrise, moscow sunrise drone 2020 of pushkin fly team, top airvuz contributor pushkinflyteam does it again with this stunning sunrise drone video of moscow, russia.  the video opens with an epic sweeping shot looking over the kremlin toward the west.  starting at the :30 mark, there's a great "climbing shot" of the ministry of foreign affairs building (one of the stalinist era "seven sisters"), starting at about 1:45, you'll see some outstanding footage of the moscow state university building (the best known of the  seven sisters), followed by an epic view of the moscow city skyscraper district., moscow in four seasons, four seasons of moscow.

Former DVOW Finalist nikybwd brings us this excellent "four season" drone video of the great city of Moscow, Russia.  The video opens with some shots looking towards the Kremlin and Red Square.  At the :11 mark, you'll soar past the massive Ostankino transmission tower.  At the :16 mark, there's a great shot looking over a gold-domed church towards the skyscrapers of the Moscow International Business Center.  Other featured locations include the Zhivopisniy Bridge (:21), the Lenin Statue at VDNKh (:39), VTB Arena (:42), and more.

Moscow in winter, moscow: the desperation of winter.

The title of this video, "Desperation of Moscow in Winter" is evocative of the evacuation of Napoleon's starved Grand Armee from the Russian city in the winter of 1812 and the stopping of Adolph Hitler's Wehrmacht just outside the gates of the city in the famously cold winter of 1941. Award-winning contributor Timelab.pro shot this amazing aerial tour of Moscow in the frigid winter of 2017-18. Shot with a DJI Inspire 2 drone carrying a Zenmuse X7 camera, it is nothing short of an aerial masterpiece.

Moscow skyscraper district, the moscow city.

Contributor Valius Video used a drone to create this bird's eye view of the New Jerusalem Monastery, which is not located anywhere near Israel.  Rather, it is in metropolitan Moscow, the great Russian capital city.  It was built in the 17th century on a site which was (vaguely) reminiscent of the "real" Jerusalem.  The monastery was heavily damaged by invading German troops in late 1941, marking very nearly the furthest advance made by Germany during that campaign before being driven back.

Largest catholic church in russia, the cathedral of the immaculate conception of the holy virgin mary, contributor and pilot valius video created this beautiful drone video of the largest catholic church in russia.  the cathedral of the immaculate conception in this heavily eastern orthodox country was conceived and built during the last days of the tsarist empire.  it was closed in 1938 during the height of stalin's persecution of all forms of organized religion, and re-opened as a church a few years after the soviet union dissolved in 1991.  it's one of three roman catholic churches in the moscow area.  , diving moscow's skyscrapers, moscow city fpv dives #2.

Prior to the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, the city of Moscow was the home of many of Russia's greatest noble families.   Three of the best known families, the Galitzine, Trubetskoy, and Bibikov clans, also had country homes in the area of Grebnovo, within the Shchyolkovsky District just to the northwest of central Moscow.  In this drone video from Vizaero, you'll get a bird's eye view of one of these great manors, which was the site of several fires in recent decades and is currently in a ruined state.

Moscow's VTB Stadium is one of the city's main sporting venues.  It includes both a football stadium and a hockey arena.  Opened in late 2018 at a cost of about US$1.5 billion, it's built on the site of the old Dynamo Stadium northwest of the center city, just outside the second ring road.  The stadium's "official" capacity is 27k, although it can be adjusted to accommodate as many as 45k fans; the ice arena can hold between 12-15k fans depending on configuration.  You can check out the modern marvel from above in this drone video by nikybwd.

Aerial tour of post-communist moscow, new moscow 2018 by dji mavic pro, over the last 25 years, no european city has changed as much as moscow.  despite the dislocation caused by the collapse of the soviet union and the financial crisis which engulfed russia in the late 1990's, the capital city has grown enormously and emerged as a leading international business center.  while much attention has been focused on the skyscrapers of its moscow city district, many of the city's districts have been nearly as transformed.  in this drone video by moscopterr, you'll get a bird's eye view of the "new moscow".  , ostankino tower, ice-bound ostankino tower by pushkin fly team moscow 2021.

Giant moscow residential project, moscow solntsevo residential complex, as moscow has emerged as a leading international business center, it has struggled to provide adequate housing for its population.  perennially short of housing in the soviet years, the problem has in many respects grown worse with the advent of capitalist russia: it's the main reason why moscow is now one of the world's most expensive cities.  in this video by moscopterr, you'll get a bird's eye view at a giant new housing complex called solntsevo on the outskirts of the great city, now europe's largest. , the chertanovo area of southern moscow.
