1960s Yema Yachtingraf Patent Pending (Ref. 9312)

From outer space, the racetrack, sailing, diving, and to the North Pole and back, Yema wristwatch’s were built to accompany adventurers from the get-go. Founded in 1948, the Yema wristwatch company saw early success and quickly became the best-selling French watch brand of the 1960s. The Yema Yachingraf was introduced in 1966 for the sole purpose of regatta racing and features a highly visible red, white, and blue countdown timer for the right sub-dial to track the 5-minute countdown at the start of the race. The Yachtingraf eventually became the official watch of the French Sailing Federation and went on to accompany the French National Sailing team in the 1972 Olympics. The Yema Yachtingraf ref. 9312 houses a Valjoux Cal. 7733 chronograph movement.

CASE & BRACELET

The excellent long lug case has been lightly polished in the past and shows some light signs of use. The original bezel shows some patina from previous use and remains in overall excellent condition. The crown and pump pushers were most likely replaced during an early service. The case back has been lightly polished however the factory engravings all remain legible and the "Yema" medallion remains fully intact. The watch will come supplied on a 2pc handmade leather strap.

DIAL & HANDS

The matte black dial is very well preserved and displays minimal signs of use and no blemishes. The sub-dials remain clean, and the unique hand for the regatta timer is original to the watch. The tritium lumed markers have taken on a charming dark patina, under U.V. light inspections 12 o'clock marker show some very minor degradation, the rest of the lume plots remain fully intact. The original tritium hands match the dial perfectly, under U.V. light inspection the hour and minute hand show light degradation and remain stable. 

ACCESSORIES 

None. The watch recently received a full service and is functioning perfectly and keeping excellent time, back by a 1-year warranty on accurate timekeeping.

The watch is in very good condition (9/10) It is fully genuine (not polished nor any change)… And it is of course in perfect working order Rare model (see History below) This Yachtingraf is the very first regatta watch. Created for sailing race departures, this first version was created in 1967 It is recognizable by its mention «Patent Pending» on the dial. Indeed, the patent applications had been filed but will not be obtained until October 1967 (FR), February 1969 (USA) and January 1970 (CH) It was then redesigned and there are many variations (but never more with the mention "Patent Pending »). Yema had also signed partnerships with the last two French skippers who participated in the America's Cup challenges (Yves Pajot 1987 - Marc Pajot 1990) The Yachtingraf remains one of the brand's emblematic models! The original version (this one) had not been produced in very large quantities (pending patents) and is obviously the rarest and the most sought after by collectors (!)

Overall, the watch is in amazing condition. Dial and hands appear to be in excellent condition. Dial and hands retain original tritium luminous. The watch case appears to be in very good condition, unpolished, with clean chamfers. The original bezel is in excellent condition, as well. The Yachting timer chronograph is fully intact. The watch was just serviced by our watchmaker, in very good running condition, keeping accurate time (305°; +8/d). A rare, extremely nice yachting chronograph in investment grade condition.

 YEMA is run by a third-generation watchmakers‘ family of Morteau, most employees averaging 30 years of service and having been trained in France's most prestigious horology schools located in our region. Known for its excellent craftsmanship, the French art of watchmaking has a longstanding tradition of excellence. It goes back more than six hundred years but it is in the 18th century that it takes off in Franche-Comté, the French region in the Jura mountains where YEMA's workshops are located, just a few miles away from Switzerland . Watchmaking was first and foremost a meticulous craft practiced in winter as a supplementary activity by farmers living in the Jura mountains. Today the watchmaking craftsmanship is preserved by historical Franche-Comté brands like YEMA and the recurrent exchanges between skilled watch experts across the border. Design, prototyping and assembling is manually and precisely taken care of by highly experienced French traditional watchmakers at our Morteau workshops .

YEMA SUPERMAN HERITAGE GMT

Designed and developed in close collaboration with YEMA fans, the first Superman Heritage GMT is proposed as an ultra-limited edition of 100 time pieces for each of the 3 bezel variants. These exclusive GMT models allow reading of two time zones simultaneously, a practical function for globetrotters, while maintaining the classic dive watch features of the Superman. The unique bezel-lock mechanism provides a double safety: It prevents the rotating bezel from moving accidentally during scuba diving but also when travelling once the bezel is set to a second time zone.

YEMA SUPERMAN HERITAGE BRONZE

Reissue of the iconic French diver watch YEMA Superman initially released in 1970 in a Bronze version. Resistant to corrosion, bronze makes this exclusive timepiece the ideal watch for all scuba diving amateurs and professionals. This exclusive bronze edition was initially launched to support Hugues Vitry marine scientific mission Mauby Dick. Equipped with Yema’s in-house self-winding mechanical movement is entirely designed, developed and assembled at our Morteau workshops in France. With its distinct resolutely vintage design, this exclusive bronze edition is limited to 1948 collector’s time pieces so as to commemorate YEMA's year of foundation.

YEMA SUPERMAN HERITAGE 

Designed to be an indestructible diving watch, it was subsequently chosen to equip France's Air Force pilots in the 1970s. With its deliberate vintage look, this historic tool-watch is available with steel and brown leather vintage bands. It recreates the classic features of the original model with its distinct black dial and round markers, Recreating the iconic Yema bezel-lock mechanism and with a 990 feet / 300 meters water resistance, the Superman is designed for underwater diving. The steel case has been redesigned in 3D as per the original model then modified to accommodate an ETA 2824-2 Swiss movement. The domed crystal contributes to the unique and resolutely vintage look. 

YEMA NAVYGRAF HERITAGE

The Navygraf initially released in the early 1970s, with its mythical markers shaped in the form of an exclamation mark, is back in an improved version. Formerly waterproof at 200 meters, this new model now offers a water resistance of 300 meters to meet the requirements of contemporary amateurs and professionals of the underwater world. The 39mm case has been completely redesigned and is made of 316L steel with a brushed effect. Iconic and recognizable at first glance with bright yellow hands, the new Navygraf’s indexes and hands are treated with Super-LumiNova offering exceptional readability during day and at night. 

YEMA SUPERMAN HERITAGE BLUE

YEMA produced the first Superman watch in 1963. This watch was initially developed for diving professionals with its 300 meter waterproofing and iconic "Patent Pending" inscription. Designed to be an indestructible diving watch, it was chosen to equip France's Air Force pilots in the 1970s. In 2019, the mythical Yema Superman 24.11.17 blue returns in a new improved version closer to its original model: distinct blue dial, embossed markers and iconic "Shovel" seconds hand. The "Shovel" second hand has become the emblematic signature of this YEMA SUPERMAN model. 

YEMA NAVYGRAF HERITAGE

The legendary Yema Rallygraf released in 1974 and nicknamed by his fans "Brown Sugar" returns in a new version very close to the original model. It inspires from the classic features of its predecessor: A brownish dial, beige brass chrono sub-dials and distinct tachymeter markers. The original model's steel case has been redesigned using 3D technology, then modified to accommodate a Swiss chrono movement, the ETA Valjoux 7753. Equipped with Super-Luminova markers, an arrow-shaped white seconds hand, a domed glass and a "Rally" bracelet it has a resolutely Rallygraf and vintage look! 

YEMA RALLYE ANDRETTI

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Mario Andretti’s historic win at Indianapolis in 1969, YEMA pays tribute to his legendary career with the reissue of the Yema Rallye chronograph that Andretti wore during the race. It comes with a Swiss chronograph movement, known for its precision and reliability, comes with an automatic ball-bearing winding. The Rallye Andretti is made available with a sapphire domed crystal making it more scratch-resistant and vintage looking. Specially conceived for car racing sports to measure both speed and distance, the original aluminium tachymetre bezel has been faithfully recreated. This collector’s edition limited to 1969 timepieces. 

YEMA YACHTINGRAF HERITAGE

The legendary Yema Yachtingraf Croisiere released in 1969 returns in a new version almost identical to the original model. With its distinct black dial and its three emblematic sub-dials (hour and minute counters, regatta start timer countdown) and its 1/5 second central timer it accommodate a high-quality Swiss movement: the ETA Valjoux 7753. This new model is equipped with Super-Luminova index, a distinct white arrow-shaped seconds hand that is found in all Yema vintage chronographs and a domed crystal for an unique and resolute vintage look. This regatta chronograph will seduce sailing sports lovers. 

YEMA YACHTINGRAF HERITAGE

Reissue of the iconic Yema Flygraf, a French aviation chronograph released in 1978. With its deliberate vintage look, this historic tool-watch is available with a large selection of bands. This chronograph is almost a replica of the original model with its black dial and its distinctive aluminum insert placed over the three sub-dials. The steel case has been redesigned in 3D as per the original model then modified to accommodate a Swiss movement, ETA Valjoux 7750. This new model is equipped with Super-Luminova markers and hands as well as a domed crystal that contribute to an unique and resolutely vintage look which will seduce all aviation enthusiasts.

Mario Andretti is a racing icon, considered by many to be the greatest race car driver in the history of the sport. He was born in Italy and didn't emigrate to the United States until age fifteen. At 19, he began racing stock cars in Pennsylvania and that was the start of an illustrious career that saw the versatile driver compete and win in every discipline he entered – midgets, sprint cars, dirt track cars, stock cars, IndyCars, Formula One, Formula 5000 and sports cars. Reissue of the iconic Yema Rallye Andretti chronograph worn at Indianapolis 1969 by legendary race car driver Mario Andretti. Hugues Vitry is a worldwide recognised professional diver & marine conservation activist responsible for Marine Megafauna Conservation Organization which studies the population of resident sperm whales in the Indian Ocean. CNES is responsible for the development and implementation of the French space program. CNES currently remains one of the most important national space agency in the European Union. The collaboration between CNES (the French NASA) and Yema dates back to 1982. In 1982 a French Spaceman, Jean-Loup Chrétien, flew from the Baikonour base for a 10-day trip into space. On his wrist, he wears the very first French watch in outer space, the Yema Spationaute 1. In 1985 the Discovery shuttle takes off with on board Patrick Baudry and his Yema Spationaute II for the first Franco-American orbital flight mission. In 1988, Jean-Loup Chrétien visits the Mir Orbital Station with his Yema Spationaute III.

In this week’s Bring A Loupe, we are bringing you a wide assortment of watches, from an extraordinarily uncommon and special WWII Longines dive watch for British Royal Navy frogrmen on eBay to a Cartier $20 U.S. gold coin watch marking Victory in Europe.

Longines collectors around the world were amazed to see this silver Hydrographic Survey watch made for the British Royal Navy with a Longines calibre 12.68N movement. The seller stated that it is one of six known to survive, which seems to be accurate from other sources I have seen. It is just such a funky and amazing watch, huh?

According to the seller, “The watch has been in the same family since WWII it was given to Danish Resistance fighter Jens C Esbensen who was guard master at Aarhus City Hall and caretaker at the property Ny Banegårds Gade 47, where for long periods during the Second World War he housed around 7 British frogmen. JCE received the watch as a gift from one of these men.” They were designed to be worn by British Royal Navy frogmen who piloted manned torpedoes or Chariots. Consider it the Longines equivalent of a Panerai. It is apparently in all original condition including all seals and plexi glass, as well as an unpolished silver case. The dial and hands are apparently all original and correct, too. It is 51 mm in diameter, so not for the slight of wrist.

This Longines has a Buy It Now of 32,000 GBP on eBay (or approximately $47,700).

The same seller of the Longines is offering up a beautiful Omega chronograph with stunning dial and great calibre 33.3 movement. Omega confirmed the watch being delivered to Sweden in 1941 and the seller seems to have found a photo of the original owner, Seve Axell, through some online research. It is available for a Buy It Now of 17,000 GBP on eBay (or approximately $25,700).

This is just a beautiful example of a Breguet Type XX in the 1960 Aeronavale style, but without the military engravings on the caseback, suggesting it was meant for sale to civilians. This particular example appears very nice and unpolished. Man, I love this watch. It is available from Time Titans for a Buy It Now of $29,500 or you can make an offer .

This Cartier 1904 $20 gold coin watch caught my eye for the engraved inscription: “Reims / May 7, 1945 / 0241 (E.T.Q.).” The Antiquorum description did not give any insight about that date, so a quick Google search revealed that is when and where the German Instrument of Surrender was signed. Inside is engraved, “LOUIS from BEDELL,” which suggests it was a gift from General Walter Bedell Smith (nicknamed “Beetle), the chief of staff to General Dwight Eisenhower to a Louis. After some digging, I believe it may have been a gift for French Lieutenant-General Roger-Alexandre-Louis Leyer, the Chief of the Army General Staff, his counterpart. “Beetle” accepted the surrender of the Germans on behalf of the Allies on that date in Reims and although Leyer did not sign, perhaps Beetle thought he would be signing. I would appreciate any reader clarification on what “E.T.Q.” signifies, as my brief research did not yield anything fruitful.

What an incredible piece of history! I am glad I took the time do some further research. What initially appeared to be a highly uncommon and valuable Cartier coin watch in fact turned out to also appear to be an important piece of World War II history. I should add that after the war, Beetle went on to be the United States Ambassador to the Soviet Union and the fourth Director of Central Intelligence (the head of the CIA). This Cartier gold coin watch has an estimate of $9,000 to $12,000 . You can see the full catalogue for Antiquorum's sale in New York on Wednesday here .

I had seen one of these Bulova Academy Award watches on another occasion and didn’t know the story on them. According to Antiquorum, “Bulova entered a licensing contract with the ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURE ARTS AND SCIENCES of Hollywood in 1950 for the use of the name "Academy Award" and the image of the iconic Oscar statue. In order to maximize its licensing rights, Bulova named the model of the watch "Academy Award" and the advertisements and the fitted boxes also often featured the model name and the Oscar statue image as well. There were various models made for both men and women and the line proved to be a success for Bulova. However, the licensing agreement fell apart when the Academy was dissatisfied by the use of their reputation being associated with the product, which insinuated their approval of Bulova being the best watchmakers in the world. After several lawsuits, they have officially severed ties in 1954. Although it is reported that the watches were sold under the same name after the termination of the licensing agreement, due to the short production period, it is widely considered as a highly-collectable model among the pop-culture enthusiasts. Here Antiquorum presents the wristwatch with the much-sought after original fitted box in pristine vintage condition.” It has an estimate of $1,500 to $2,500 .

To be honest, I had never seen one of these watches prior to seeing this one. What an interesting watch. Made for the idea of tracking how much time you had parked as well as elapsed time. The two additional crowns control two additional internal bezels. It is 41mm in diameter and has an incredible beautiful dial. I especially like the grayish-green accents on the parking track – it almost reminds me of a dull Tiffany blue. It has an Italian day of the week disk, as well, which is cool. It is available for $2,450 from Wannabuyawatch . You can see another example here .

This is an uncommon and very cool Yema Yachtingraf that is patent pending. Designed for sailors that race, the register on the right provides a countdown to the start of a race. I love the detail on this one: the beaeutiful lume in the hour and minute hands as well as markers, the little boat on the dial, the “Patent Pending” text above 6 o’clock (meaning it was an earlier model, later models were patented), and the neat lines coming off the constant seconds register , and the 39mm case with crown guard. It is available for $2,650 from Wannabuyawatch .

If you have a thing for yachting watches and are on slightly more of a budget, this LeJour 0 Day Yachting Time is also very beautiful. It shares the same seconds hand as on the Yema, and the second hand appears to originally be without lume so it would not block the minute register on both when the chronograph is operating. This watch currently has a high bid of $359 on eBay .

This Ulysse Nardin is stunningly beautiful and original. It appears to date to the 1940s and appears unpolished and all original. It is 32.5 mm in diameter and just a great time capsule of a watch. It is available for 398,000 yen (approximately $3,300) from Private Eyes .

I absolutely love this 18k yellow gold Ulysse Nardin chronograph. The blued hands and black numerals look great against the salmon dial. It is just back from being serviced and is being offered for sale by a friend. It is currently at $2,600 on eBay .

This Angelus is notable for its in-house movement that combines a triple date in an aesthetically pleasing way with a chronograph. One detail I like on these: the long red dashes at 3, 6, 9, and 12, supposedly for people to note when to put coins in the telephones in order to maintain a call. It was said to be a feature particularly for Americans in Europe calling home, presumably pilots or those in the military. Angelus has gotten a bit of attention with its recent reboot and launch of a crazy tourbillon. Let’s just say I prefer the more classical Angelus of days yore and hope that future watches will be more along these lines. This gold-filled model is a great buy for the money. It is also being offered for sale by a friend and has an opening bid of $5.99 .

This Memovox is just a great very clean later jumbo Memovox example with the original Gay Freres bracelet. It appears unpolished to my eye and has both original JL crowns, which is rare to see. Just a beautiful watch. This watch is being sold by another friend. It is available for a Buy It Now of $3,700 and you can also make an offer .

Among Breitling enthusiasts and collectors, one of the true Breitling grails is the early Navitimer with a Valjoux 72 movement. This is one of them. All original and unpolished, this is just one nasty watch. These early Navitimers were particularly sensitive to having moisture get inside, so you will often see them with replaced dials or internal slide rule bezels. This is a great one in that the dial and bezel are original, even though they show some patina. It is available for a Buy It Now of $10,500 and you can also make an offer .

The still FACTORY ORIGINAL (non-refurbished) dial has some patina matching its age. The glas is in perfect condition. The case has slight signs of wear but retains much of the original case material and finishing, and fullness and beveling of the lugs. Please consider the pictures as well as the age of the watch. 

The movement of this watch was professionally serviced in 2022. This means that the movement was completely disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and re-assembled by our watchmaker. The watch is sold with 3 years of warranty on its proper function.

If you decide to buy multiple watches for long term investment purposes, shipping is only charged once. On average it takes us one or two working days to get the watch shipped. (We need to get it out of the bank vault, do a last check on proper function, pack it carefully and professionally and take it to the courier company. After the watch is shipped, you will automatically receive a tracking link so you can follow your parcel.)

You can place the order directly through the checkout system of our website (by pressing the green "buy button" to the right of the watch pictures). This checkout takes usually only 3-5 minutes and no registration (and also no login) is needed. You can choose between bank transfer, credit card (Master Card and Visa), paypal (+3.5%) or a cash payment when meeting personally in Vienna as payment options through this website checkout. Some customers prefer to pay through bank transfer (bank wire) by simply exchanging bank and address details via email. This is still possible as it was our first and only payment option when we started the company in 2013. Ironically, its still the most used.

You live within the EU: We ship from Vienna (Austria) and shipments are 100% customs free to all countries within the EU. There are zero additional import duties. We guarantee for this. You live outside of the EU (in the USA or Asia): If you live in Switzerland (about +20%), England (Brexit) (about +20%) Norway, the USA (about +0-10%, depending on state-law, Japan (about +10%) customs fees (also called import duties) need to be paid. We ship a lot to these countries and are very experienced in handling all of the customs paperwork for you. This is a big relief for most customers. These customs fees need to be paid by the receiver of the parcel, usually when the Fedex delivery man hands it over on the doorstep. Vintage Portfolio is an official company and we cant under-declare watches as this would break the law. Also, it does not pay off in the long run, neither for the customer nor for us to cheat customs, as the punishments are extremely high for doing so. Please don’t even ask us to put a wrong value onto the parcel. That said, its absolutely possible to have a watch shipped customs free to friends and family within the EU. (In this case we of course believe that you will pay the necessary duties if you choose to pick up the watch and take it outside of EU territory, but this is then neither our matter nor our responsibility to check on any more.)
