South Shore Yacht Club

Harbor of Hospitality

Welcome to the biggest, friendliest and most inclusive yacht club on Lake Michigan, bringing together folks from all walks of life. While we have our blue-blazer traditions, no one ever called us stuffy. What you'll find is a more laid-back vibe that invites people to just be themselves, away from the pressures of life in general. We're a busy gathering place year round, unlike typical yacht clubs that go into winter hibernation.

Dues and slip fees are surprisingly affordable, in part because our passionate members help maintain the place. Being a major Great Lakes yacht club, we host an exciting sailing and power boating scene. Yet, a growing segment of members don't even own boats. For them, SSYC is all about fellowship, in the most romantic spot on Milwaukee's lakefront. Smack in the heart of the city's most happening neighborhood.

The Best Experience at a Reasonable Price

What's it like to be a member? It's different for everyone. You can carve out your own experience and pick your context. But we believe one thing is true across the board. Among private clubs in metropolitan Milwaukee, South Shore Yacht Club gives you one of the best experiences for the money.

Yacht Club Info

February 3, 2023

The South Shore Yacht Club is a private sailing and social club located on the south shore of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, Wisconsin . Founded in 1913, it is one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in the Midwest. The club offers a variety of sailing programs and events, as well as a clubhouse with dining and social facilities. Membership is by invitation and is subject to approval by the club’s board of directors.

History of the South Shore Yacht Club

South Shore Yacht Club had a very modest beginning in 1913, when a group of men decided to form a club that would channel their interest in sailing into one cohesive effort. Many of those men lived close to the lake, all of them lived in Bay View.

There were several important years since then – milestones in the growth of the Club:

The past 100 years have seen good times and bad times, in fact, during the Depression, some of the members found it difficult to afford the $5.00 annual dues!

But the Club persevered and grew into one of the largest on Lake Michigan, through hard work and the dedication of it’s members. The present Clubhouse was completely built by the members. That same dedication persists today.

So, from a very humble beginning in 1913, SOUTH SHORE YACHT CLUB has grown to a Club that is the envy of many other Clubs on the Great Lakes.

South Shore Yacht Club the Member Experience

A membership experience at the South Shore Yacht Club is described as follows:

What’s it Like to be a Member?

It’s different for everyone. You can carve out your own experience and pick your context. But we believe one thing is true across the board. Among private clubs in metropolitan Milwaukee, South Shore Yacht Club gives you a great experience at a reasonable price..

We sometimes chuckle among ourselves about being called the “Cheers” of yacht clubs. But there’s a grain of truth. We absolutely are the place you can go where everybody knows your name.

We’re also sometimes called “the people’s yacht club.” And again, the label sort of fits. Our founders wanted to make yachting attainable for a broad spectrum of society; and their dream lives on. At SSYC, steamfitters and surgeons are buddies. The CFO has a beer with the welder. No one here puts on airs. When we say everybody is welcome, we mean it. It’s the heart and soul of who we are.

So if you want something more “exclusive,” you wouldn’t be happy here. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a friendly, embracing refuge, you’ve found a new home and a new family.

Other Ways We’re Different

• This club was hand built by a tribe of hardy, determined and resourceful do-it-yourselfers. Our current tribe is pretty much that way too. No one will ever require you to join a seasonal work party. But you might want to when you see how many other fellow members are chipping in.

• Boaters around here also tend to be unusually self reliant, doing their own repairs and maintenance. You can’t help but soak up knowledge just hanging out. Our membership includes some of the area’s top marine professionals, from boatyard owners to master repair technicians.

• Our members use the club heavily – not just in the warm months. There are well-attended parties and food & beverage specials throughout the entire year. During football season, for example, every Sunday, we throw the most fun Packer party in town. For the Big Game, whatever it may be, we morph into Milwaukee’s ultimate sports bar.

• Social members are part of the gang. That they don’t own boats doesn’t matter. You can be a social member at South Shore Yacht Club and never, ever feel left out.

Here’s what the South Shore Yacht Club has to say about Sailing:

Get Active in Sailing

Our sail race committee runs a complete summer-long series of events at all levels of competitive sailing. From small-boat one-design, to beer can racing, to full-on grand prix events. Whatever your level, you’ll find a fleet to fit.

For general information contact Race Committee Chair Cheryl Kelly,  [email protected] , (414) 807-6468. For fleet-specific information contact your fleet captain.

SS/SSS  (South Shore Social Sailing Series ) heads out for a quick spin around the buoys every Wednesday night, followed by a great party with free beer and optional, value-priced buffet dinner.

It’s a fun and crazy mix of casual cruisers and hard-core racers. The race committee adjusts individual handicaps after every race, giving a knock to the winners and a boost to the losers, “so all can win.” There are three spinnaker divisions and two, growing jib-and-main divisions.

Often you’ll find 60 or 70 boats on the starting line. To come out and race you don’t need a PHRF certificate. Contact Fleet Captain Barbara Drake,  [email protected] , (414) 276-4051.

MBOS/PHRF  is the weekend crowd of racers who take the sport very seriously and compete intensely. Milwaukee Yacht Club and South Shore Yacht Club partner up for race management. These regattas are run crisply and professionally at a championship level. And yet it’s not all about intensity. A great party follows every great event. Contact Fleet Captain John Sutphen,  [email protected] .

SASS Fleet:  (formerly MBSAS)  If you need to cut the lawn or take the kids to soccer on Saturday, but would still like to get a good sailboat race in later that day, this is the fleet for you.

Born from the successful SS-SSS Wednesday night race format, the Saturday Afternoon Sailing Series (SASS) is our newest fleet. It features a one race per day format in a limited season schedule of only five races. Each race will be held in the mid afternoon and sailed on the same “fixed” course no matter which way the wind blows.

The goal is for each race to last no longer than two hours, so you know you can be on and off the water quickly after a nice afternoon of competitive sailing.

MBSAS fleet members can also enter the PHRF fleet distance races for an additional charge. Afterwards the fleet is welcome to join the traditional PHRF fleet after-race parties when available. Contact Mark Wolbrink,  [email protected] , for additional information.

The Lightning Fleet,  racing on Tuesday nights, is our newest addition. Or, shall we say, the newest iteration of a fleet that’s been around for decades.

This 19-foot trailerable centerboard sloop was designed by Sparkman & Stephens as an affordable family day-sailor and racing boat.

She has evolved into one of the most popular and competitive one-design racing classes in the world. Awarded ISAF International Class status, the Lightning is sailed in more than 13 countries and in the Pan American Games, and the class provides a professionally managed association that is among the largest in all of one-design sailing. Contact Fleet Captain Brandon Holton,  [email protected] .

The MBWSO  (Milwaukee Bay Women’s Sailing Organization) runs six Monday-night handicap events over the course of the summer. Three are on the north end of the bay and sponsored by Milwaukee Yacht Club. Three are on the south end of the bay and sponsored by South Shore Yacht Club. The sponsoring club hosts an after-race party. MBWSO promotes women in sailing and creates a spirit of good fellowship. Another core purpose: Help participants build their skills and their confidence level. Contact Fleet Captain Fran Aring,  [email protected] , (414) 481-2600.

The Doublehanded Fleet  runs a series a four fun races spread out over the summer and always on late Friday afternoons. Give yourself an excuse to start the weekend a couple hours early. Each race is a simple spin around the buoys followed by a party with buffet supper. Popular event, great group. Contact  [email protected]  for information or if you are interested in being the Fleet Captain for this fleet.

Radio Control  The Dragon Force 65 is a remote control sailboat consisting of a main and a jib. It has simple controls that allow it to be sailed very easily and in many types of wind conditions. At less than $250 dollars and a few hours of build time, it’s the fastest growing remote control sailboat in North America. Even when the ‘big’ boats are put away, we run a fall and spring frostbiting series to extend the racing season even further. Races typically take place in the horseshoe, north, or south derricks. Come join the newest fleet at South Shore Yacht Club! Contact Jeff Bird, Fleet Captain:  [email protected]  or request to join our facebook goup:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/radiosailingmke/

Race Committee.  Not a sailor or racer and want to be on the water and help out? We always need and welcome additional volunteers to join our Race Committee. The race committee team will help coordinate our racing calendar, work on our race boats and manage the individual race execution and scoring. If you are interested in helping in this capacity, please email  [email protected] .

South Shore Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program

Membership is open to the youth of the entire metro Milwaukee community.  Parents do not have to be members of South Shore Yacht Club.

All youths ages 8 to 18 are eligible. The cost is $50 per year.  Eight weeks of sail lessons are available for an additional cost. Please note that continuing students have first call on class openings. For more information, please contact Junior Advisor Tom (TK) Kingston at: [email protected] . The club office also can help with general questions, (414) 481-2331.

Winter Storage and Derrick Operations

Winter Storage and Derrick Operations

We are able to store approximately 80 member boats on our grounds in the winter.  Our main derrick can lift boats up to 15 tons.

Derrick operations are not “full service”.  That is, the club provides one or two skilled operators and the member is expected to provide the rest of the labor to haul out, launch and move boats within our property.

South Shore Yacht Club Reviews

Some reviews for South Shore Yacht Club on Google :

Enjoyed a lovely fish fry with friends who are members & invited us to the club. Lovely views of the lake and enjoyed a rainbow and sunset.
Off season was empty and quiet. Just a nice place to sit and contemplate.
Had the Jaegerschnitzel w/spatzle and asparagus and it was wonderbar, I have not met the new chef but I am very happy with what my husband and I had. Oh, escargot to start the evening.
Good spot. Should have more guest boat parking (a dock or two) to bring in people who own own boats. Nice to see there rentals for boats on site for getting people on water from a nice venue too.
It was this or Mckinley and SSYC wins hands down. Comparative cost for a slip BUT you get a club/bar/restaurant, a dock master that is very knowledgeable, safer docks, and many new friends. Beats the heck out of McKinley Marina. Also has the feel of a boatyard as you walk about. Out of 100 people maybe 2 are “stuffy”. The rest are good fun people.

David on September 8th, 2022:

Great folks run this place. We were in the area during our Great Loop adventure in late 2019 and wanted to meet up with friends and come and go for about a week. I called and spoke to the dockmaster and told him we were looking for a good deal in MKE for a week's stay on a dock, and he made a deal that was so fair I will not even admit to it in print for fear that someone else will ask it of him. Suffice it to say, I had the lowest slip rent in Milwaukee for an entire week—there is little doubt of that. And this was before we belonged to a club with reciprocity. The deal was just kind people being kind to strangers by sharing their wonderful facility for a fraction of what it is worth. It still chokes me up a little.

Capt. Mike on October 30th, 2020:

SSYC is one of the friendliest and down to earth clubs on the Great Lakes. Great food. Easy walking distance to stores/restaurants. Adjacent to the Lake Express Ferry dock. SSYC has fuel & pump-out services as well. Transient dockage is available in the horseshoe by the fuel docks. Call the club ahead of time if you plan to stay the night.

Skipper on October 6th, 2017:

As a new member I am slightly biased, but as a life long sailor I am critical. I can say honestly that this is a great facility, with very gracious members and great service. Within walking distance are a few great little Italian grocery stores to provision your boat, and numerous members that are always willing to help and get the transient sailor a ride to a store or help make repairs. Truly a great down to earth sincere place.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club.

Shore House

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Good place for meeting ang having lunch or dinner. Far from center of Moscow but near Krasnogorsk and other locations.

Definitely worth a visit! Discover a refined cuisine with exquisit meals and drinks. Atmosphere and decorum are nice (with a marina). Service is fast, nice and friendly without trying to be unnecessarily up-scale. Only negative are the prices in the winelist. A TRUE killer... you... better chose a bottle from the left-overs shortlist. More

The location and view is the biggest weakness of this place. It maybe delivers so many customers that restaurant does not need to have ultimate cousine. The service is good and kind, but not so well trained, as in some other luxury places in Moscow.... It does not mean we were not happy with your place, we just had expectations, so here is my honest view: - Wine selection - overpriced - Tuna tartar - Nice presentation vs. bad seasoning - Very good shashlik and good sauce - You could have more Russian Vodka, you are in Russia, not in France More

Great atmosphere. An ideal place for conducting business negotiations, as well as for romantic or friendly events. The menu deserves the highest praise - the dishes that we managed to try (and there were a lot of them) were incredibly tasty. Service - at the... highest level, the staff is very attentive, caring and not intrusive. We recommend to everyone and will be happy to come again! More

Restaurant is situated by a lake so the view is great, if you can get an outdoor table. They also have very nicely designed indoor part by the way. Nice ladies welcome you at the entrance and lead you to your table. English is spoken.... Waiters are polite. Service is good. I had mozzarella salad and lentil soup and both were excellent. I would reccoment to anyone. More

Great restaurant with delicious food. Good service. I heard its even better in summer with the view to the river, which we couldn't see in winter. Really worth it to try.

Beautiful restaurant with balcony overlooking the river (frozen over when I was there) and lit up bridge. Efficient and friendly service, with English menu. The cuisine is based on one of the Asian 'stans', good but not wow. Prices a little on the high side... but not hysterically so. More

It was a hot day and although there was a big terras we needed to sit inside. Hot and now aiconditioning. A great location next to the river with a swimming pool aside. The wine I ordered was not in stock. They served all plates... and different moments, no coordination, some mismatches... The food was just ok. Luckely after the dinner we could have a drink at the terras to recover from the hot humid climate inside. More

Nice restaurant with good cuisine, but very depressing view of huge apartment blocks on the outskirts of the city and a dirty river from the terrace. I would recommend you to take a table inside the restaurant, where the interior is much more stylish. Anyway,... despite the fact, that food is fresh and tasty, there is no specific reason to visit Shore House unless you are visiting Crocus City or shopping centers nearby. More

The restaurant is Just outside the Moscow ring road with nice views of the river. I typically come here during spring and summer. The winter view is also not bad. The inside is nicely decorated and quite charming. Service is good as expected from a... Novikov restaurant. I normally like the food here, yet this time most items were just average. If it was our first time here, most probably I would not visit again. So I would like to assume it is a one time fluke. Especially the sourcing of meet should change. More

I enjoyed the location of the Shore House Restoran and the waiters were attentive but the food itself leaves something to be desired and is overpriced for what it is. Went home a little hungry and disappointed.

we enjoyed the grilled salmon. Bread brought to the table was very good. The chicken shalik was good.

Excellent for weekend lunches. I love the Azeri touch to the menu. Good also for family visits. Expensive but worth it. One of my favorite places.

Enjoyed when we stopped here for dinner after work at an exhibition in the Crocus Mall. Firstly, there's cozy inside and restaurant has a terraces with a beautiful view of the river on the yacht-club. Secondly, the food is very tasty and is served elegantly.... We were impressed by of alcohol's selection in the bar, we did not want to leave. More

My friend and I went to this place before the show (was close by). PROs: - Service; - Nice location (though outside of Moscow); - Appealing interior & exterior (nice verandah); - Rich variety of food; - free wifi; PROs: - Overpricy (we paid around... 250 USD for two dishes, one appetizer, two deserts, a glass of wine and tea); - In spite of the fact that this restaurant claimed to be a fish one, the seafood was a poor quality: my oysters and overpriced crab (over 100 USD per piece) werent fresh: oysters were clinged to the shells, crab had empty limbs like this crab was frozen not even once! - Verandah is a smoking zone, so we had to move inside; - Not much choice for taking just a glass of wine; - Crumbs werent cleaned after the main dishes, so had to eat my desert turning up and down the part of tablecloth - no reaction from the waiters. Actually was really disppointed - I visited this place many times before and can say that the quality of food was deteriorated a lot (( Wouldnt recommend... More
