Ray Dalio announces OceanX and M/V ‘Alucia2’

New initiative and vessel aim to revolutionise ocean research and media….

Superyacht owner and philanthropist Ray Dalio, with his son Mark, director James Cameron and a number of other leading scientific partners, announced the launch of OceanX yesterday. This initiative, to further explore the ocean for educational and scientific purposes, will be undertaken by a brand new vessel, 85m M/V Alucia2 . The project aims to follow the huge success of ocean exploration carried out by Dalio’s existing research vessel, 56m M/V Alucia .

In a statement about Alucia2 and OceanX, Dalio illustrated his passion for conservation and understanding more about our oceans. "I believe that ocean exploration is more exciting and important than space exploration [and] we are on a mission to show people that." The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is among the many philanthropic partners of the project.

Alucia2 will be delivered in 2019 and was originally built as a deep-sea diving survey vessel in 2010. According to reports, she will be “the most advanced science and media vessel ever built” and her refit has been designed by Gresham Yacht Design. Features of the vessel include marine research labs, media equipments (and an entire media centre), manned and autonomous deep-sea submersibles, as well as a range of helicopters and drones. James Cameron, known for his filmography and ocean exploration, was consulted throughout the development of the media centre. "With OceanX and Alucia2 , we will reignite global passion for and curiosity about the ocean in our global, digitally-connected age,” said Cameron. In addition to hosting scientists and media teams, OceanX will conduct virtual classes and museum exhibitions for people across the world.

"With OceanX and Alucia2, we will reignite global passion for and curiosity about the ocean in our global, digitally-connected age.”

Ray Dalio is founder of OceanX and the president of Dalio Philanthropies. His son, Mark, is the founder and creative director of OceanX Media, who worked with the BBC team behind the Blue Planet II series. In a conversation with The Superyacht Report last year, Alex Flemming, co-CEO of marine operations for the family office that operates M/V Alucia, revealed the driving force behind Dalio’s entrance into the yacht market. “He is a very intelligent man and he was always fascinated by the scientific community. He was introduced to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and he was so fascinated and taken aback by what they do – and what they achieve – that he had the idea to buy a boat.”

Flemming also echoed the importance of Dalio’s focus on ocean – not space – exploration through engaging media content. “We are trying to make it interesting, and fun, so that it makes difference and people actually say, ‘that’s cool’. Not only promoting the project and the idea, but also make people aware of what is going on. 70 per cent of our planet is ocean, and we only know about 15 per cent of it, how does that make sense? We’re spending more money trying to populate the moon than we are in our ocean backyard.” The impact of Dalio on the superyacht industry’s attitude to ocean conservation and scientific research is undeniable. Hopefully, his commitment to these causes will inspire more owners to follow his example. And as M/V Alucia has been at the forefront of many exciting ocean discoveries in recent years, we eagerly await the successes of OceanX and M/V Alucia 2 .

Built upon the legacy of M/V Alucia, OceanXplorer will continue Alucia’s work to broaden the scientific understanding of oceans and to present the discoveries to the world.

Damen Shipyards Group completed the reconstruction of R/V OceanXplorer vessel at Damen Shiprepair Rotterdam in the Netherlands in October 2020.

OceanXplorer will be recorded in the National Geographic series, Mission OceanX, which will premier in 171 countries and 43 languages.

OceanXplorer reconstruction details

OceanXplorer was rebuilt from the main deck upwards by replacing the existing accommodation with a new and larger unit of yacht standard to house scientific laboratories, workshops, and submarine hanger.

Addition of a fully integrated heli hanger to the superstructure and extension of the accommodation decks on both sides were executed to accommodate new cabins on the increased vessel’s full beam.

In addition to the structural changes, the ship was also integrated with all crucial systems, including specialist hydrographic and laboratory systems and IT infrastructure to provide state-of-the-art research facilities in combination with the on-board cinematography and media studios of Hollywood standard.

The restructuring of the ship’s docking infrastructure included removal and refurbishment of azipull and bow thrusters, blasting and tanks coating. It also completed the overhaul and up-gradation of crew accommodation. The vessel’s moon pool was also closed, box keel was fabricated as well as stabilisors, ROVs, and submersibles were installed in the vessel under the project.

OceanXplorer design and features

The OceanXplorer measures 87.1m long and 21.4m wide. It has a maximum draft of 6.8m and load displacement of 5,399t. The vessel can accommodate a maximum of 72 crew members.

The science facilities at the vessel include four wet and dry labs used for various purposes such as genetic sequencing, microscopy, aquarium tanks, biofluorescent imaging, and sample visualisation from various sensors. It also contains CTD, built-in collection systems and scanners, as well as other equipment such as 3D photogrammetry rig, and hydrophone array.

The media facilities of the vessel contain media centre, dedicated tank filming room and wet and dry camera storage & preparation rooms. alucia-2

The first Alucia vessel is a superstar in the world of explorer yachts.

Featured in the award-winning documentary Blue Planet by BBC, she is the only vessel in the world to carry three deep-diving manned submersibles. She is now listed for sale.

OceanX, the company that owned Alucia now plans to refit an 85m explorer vessel previously known as Volstad Surveyor built in 2010 by Freire Shipyard.

The refitted vessel will be named Alucia 2 and will continue to explore the secrets of the oceans for OceanX and BBC's Blue Planet. The design for the new explorer yacht has been created by Gresham Yacht Design.

We are thrilled to be a part of such an exciting and unique project,” says Steve Gresham, founder and principal designer at Gresham Yacht Design. “These types of projects are rare to come by and we are honoured to have been commissioned by the owner to deliver a design that is extremely functional and robust, it is a true explorer vessel.”

The new vessel will be fitted with marine research labs, media equipment, deep-sea submersibles, helicopters and drones. The refit is currently underway in The Netherlands, with a delivery date set for 2019.

EYOS-Expeditions-supports-BBC-Blue-Planet-II

Exploration vessel Alucia stars in Blue Planet II alongside EYOS Expeditions

In the iconic BBC series  Blue Planet II , featuring Sir David Attenborough, received extensive support from EYOS Expeditions in Antarctica during the austral summer of 2016/2017. EYOS provided support and assistance with permitting, polar logistics and operational support on board 56 metre research vessel Alucia on her three month, three voyage deployment to Antarctica.

“Congratulations to BBC for capturing some of the most stunning imagery of our natural world on this expedition," said Ben Lyons, CEO of EYOS Expeditions . "That it was filmed under the most trying of circumstances in some of the most remote parts of the world only makes the result that much more impressive".

The series took around than fours years to film and came 16 years after the original series. It boasts music by Hans Zimmer and involved 125 shoots, 6,000 hours of underwater filing and 1,000 hours of filming in submersibles. Exploring 500-600 metres beneath the many layers of ice, which has weighed down the continental shelf over time, divers shared the extraordinary marine world with viewers, filming fascinating creatures such as the ancient Graneledone antarctica octopus, giant sea-spiders, ice dragonfish and the Antarctic sunstar Labidiaster annulatus, which can grow up to 50 arms and has been nicknamed 'the Death Star'.

Alucia was first delivered in 1974 by Auroux as a support vessel and recovery platform for diving and submersible operations. She underwent a 12 month refit , which was completed in 2014 by Diverse Projects . Fully kitted out with two deep dive submarines, a helicopter, helipad and the latest in technical diving, filming and scientific research equipment. she has a range of 7,000 nautical miles with an average speed of ten knots. Both the Triton 3300/3 (one pilot, two observers) and the Deep Rover (one pilot, one observer) can go to depths of 1,000 metres.

“When we built Alucia in Seattle during 2008-2011 we focused on creating a very capable expedition platform," said EYOS founding partner Rob McCallum. "Having her as the primary platform for submersible, helicopter and scuba ops in Antarctica fulfils our original intention when we built her."

“Our clients are people who want to get to the most remote parts of the planet in order to achieve their mission. Often it is to highlight the plight of our oceans and the threats to the world we live in," added McCallum. "For instance, just recently our Expedition Leader Justin Hofman captured an image of a seahorse with a cotton bud whilst on expedition in Borneo, highlighting the issue of marine plastic debris and earning him a place as a finalist in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards”.

The critically acclaimed Blue Planet II first aired on October 29, continuing for six weeks with a total of seven episodes. Don't miss a minute of it if you're thinking of cruising along the coastlines of Antarctica on your next superyacht expedition.

Saving the seas we sail on

Why ocean conservation has become a priority to a new breed of superyacht owner.

“More and more superyacht owners are starting to combine two things they enjoy; being on the water and being proactive about improving the world around them.” So says Mark Drewelow, the founder of YachtAid Global , an organisation which helps yachts wanting to aid conservation efforts in the communities they visit.

Considering that the oceans lie at the heart of the superyacht lifestyle, it’s perhaps not surprising that owners are increasingly keen to keep them clean. Drewelow points to some high profile examples of these proactive owners, including Ray Dalio, whose yacht Alucia was built specifically to help broaden the world’s understanding of the oceans. With unrivalled diving, filming and scientific equipment, the boat has carried out numerous projects, from giant squid searches in the Ogasawa Islands to jellyfish research in Raja Ampat, Indonesia.

Saving the seas we sail on

Alucia 2 , which will be delivered later this year, has equally grand ambitions, with space for three submarines, a helicopter landing deck and even a media production centre, which will allow the team to deliver documentaries about their findings while still at sea. “There’s a growing sense that it’s harder to enjoy being on the water when you’re turning a blind eye to the problems our oceans are facing,” explains Drewlow. “We encourage owners to get in touch as we’re able to take their passions and help them with the logistics, permissions and planning to get projects like this underway.”

Examples such as Alucia might once have been few and far between, but today it’s a different story. REV , a ground-breaking yacht project, has already hit the headlines numerous times, despite still being in build. Driven by Norwegian billionaire Kjell Inge Røkke, REV will be the world’s largest research and expedition vessel when completed next year. Although the owner and his family will spend time on board, its driving force is research.  At 186 metres in length, there will even be room for an auditorium on board – the ideal place for scientists to share their discoveries.

These owner-lead environmental efforts are not restricted to those building immense research yachts – there are plenty more using their existing vessels to provide relief across the globe – such as Dunia Baru which recently provided relief to earthquake-struck Lombok or DragonFly , one of a number of yachts which recently took part in Operation Beagle to deliver clean water access to 8000 school children in the Galapagos – and yet more who are launching foundations and charities in the same vein.

The owners of Vava 2 , Ernesto and Kirsty Bertarelli, are a case in point. The couple was so compelled to help preserve the marine environment, that they launched the Bertarelli Foundation back in 2008. From tracking hawksbill turtles in British Indian Ocean Territory for the first time earlier this year – to embarking on revolutionary coral reef research expeditions – the foundation tackles some of the biggest issues in marine conservation – often offering up their own vessel to do so.

The Living Oceans Foundation , meanwhile, launched by yacht owner Prince Khaled bin Sultan, has carried out multiple projects since its launch in 2000, including the world’s largest high-resolution mapping expedition.  And 11 th Hour Racing , set up by yacht owner Wendy Schmidt, is yet another example, which supports the development of environmentally friendly practices in the industry and encourages ocean preservation through sponsorship of regattas and sailing races. Schmidt’s own yacht, Elfje , was designed to be as fuel-efficient as possible – another growing trend among owners.

“I think the new wave of environmental conservation coming from those with wealth and influence is due to the fact that they are waking up to the dire situation we’ve found ourselves in,” says Tony Gilbert, program director at the International Seakeepers Society , which helps yachts become platforms for marine research and conservation. “At this point, it’s impossible to ignore. It’s no longer a political issue.  It’s a global issue, based on facts and scientific data.”

Their Discovery Yacht Programme has encouraged many owners to allow their vessels to be used for science and conservation. “There are plenty of examples,” says Gilbert, “including Bill Simons and his yacht Archimedes , Jack McClurg and his yacht Marcato , and one of our biggest supporters, Michael Saylor, who owns several vessels, many of which we’ve used for SeaKeepers expeditions and projects.”

The trend in the superyachting industry follows a wider trend in the outside world, epitomised by the likes of The Giving Pledge – a campaign launched by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet back in 2010 and which has since been signed by over 150 billionaires, who together have pledged to give over US$350m back to society. In the yachting industry, it’s often people with the same spending power who are able to make waves in an area that they hold dear.

“Almost two-thirds of the planet is covered by our oceans and seas; any scientific study and conservation efforts to preserve them is key to the survival of the world,” says Gilbert. “Yacht owners are in a unique position to use their vessels and resources for these purposes.”
