Wooden boat plans for Tenders

A tender is a small boat often used to ferry goods and people in areas that are too shallow or unsuitable for the larger keel boats. Often a tender is used to bring people to their moored boats. Most keel-boats will have a tender since the keel prevents them from going too close to land. Some tenders are carried on board, others towed and still many others stay on the mooring and are only used to ferry sailors to and from land.

The tender often doubles as a fishing boat, small sailboat to play around or a kids swimming platform.

There are a great deal of argument about what is the best tender.

There is no perfect tender and a great deal comes down to personal preference and conditions. You have to balance factors such as: appearance, suitability to conditions, stability, size, storage on board the mother-ship, multipurpose/sailing, propulsion method motor/oar/sail and of course cost.

I have a couple of pages about tenders: How to choose a tender and Comparison of different types of tenders.

Many boat building beginners dream of building a large boat and sailing off into the sunset. The usual advice is build the tender first and then build your big boat.

Email me if a link is broken. I try to update everything often but the internet is a fast paced place, (and I'm not so quick).

Although canoes and kayaks and other small boats are light and can often be built and stored in small areas particularly if they are take-apart designs, they don't make ideal tenders since it is difficult to stand up in them and standing up is often necessary in order to climb into a higher keel boat. Us more mature folks often have crotchety knees that complain when asked to bend into small spaces. We don't listen but they still complainn. Kayaks and Canoes are simply not stable enough to deal with a wiggly kid or dog trying to jump out.

This information is for general knowledge. I try to find links to good plans but I have not checked them personally. If you build any of these plans do your homework and make sure it is suitable for your purpose and you know how to use the tools safely.

I try to be accurate and check my information, but mistakes happen. ALSO keep in mind that not all free boat plans are good designs. Some are but others are worth exactly what you paid for them. Also keep in mind while I'm in a preachy mood, that a good set of plans will save you lots of time and if you've paid for them you can usually contact the designer and get help.

A freestanding multi-piece mast constructed of aluminum tubing provides a lightweight and strong spar. The mast can be permanently assembled or left in pieces to allow the tubes to nest together for onboard storage. Fully zippered sleeve luff sail combined with a halyard for hoisting and an open reef section allows for single line reefing on the water in seconds  for sailing in rough conditions. There is no need to struggle while "planting the flag" as with other dinghies and you can easily drop the sail while on shore without dropping the mast.

A fully developed bow section combined with our “butterfly” construction technique allows a beginning builder to achieve a refined hull shape from modest flat panels.

All but the 12' version are offered as a “nesting” version which bolts together allows the bow section to stow in the stern section for on deck storage. Read more about the nesting version .

The construction of the Spindrift hull is fast and simple. The bottom and side panels are matched up and joined at the bow. Then the keel is wired together which allows the hull to “unfold” like a butterfly. The chine is wired and the bulkheads are installed. The hull takes shape all in one step with no complicated jig required. The video below is an excellent demonstration of a S10 dinghy being unfolded. This method of construction is identical to our larger designs such as the Core Sound 20 , 17 and 15 making it a great build for a first time builder. Read on to see more details about our plans and kits. Our Core Sound 15 build series uses the same techniques for construction.

Nested DIMENSIONS :    S-9     S-10     S-11   Note: S12 not available in a nested version

nested-size.jpg

Standard Construction In the standard layout, full-length cockpit seat tanks provide excellent buoyancy and minimal bailing after a capsize ( video ) as well as storage options for longer excursions with the addition of deck plate type screw hatches in the vertical cockpit sides. In both versions the dagger board trunk is located just off center. This is a design feature of all our dinghies which allows the keel to be continuous and strong, prevents damage and grit from entering the trunk slot and simplifies construction. Click here to view the non-nesting assembly guide , a new work in progress document that covers the general order of construction.

standard-layout.jpg

The biggest compromise is the lost permanent flotation in the nested version. More bailing will be require after a capsize and the free surface effect will make the nested version less stable after a capsize until the water is bailed out. A suction bailer can be installed in a standard hull to empty the boat while underway but the nested version has 2 separate bilges and 2 bailers would be expensive and complicated. Click here to see our " Nesting Spindrift Assembly Guide " where you can read about the steps of building a nesting Spindrift. This document accompanies the nesting plans.

spinrace.jpg

Many of our Spindrift families race their boats, then turn around and use them for cruising and voyaging as hard working tenders under oar and motor. They have won several regattas under both sail and oar which were open only to working tenders.

As a matter of fact, we have an open challenge to any other non-custom 10′ dinghy: A dinghy triathlon: sail, row, motor. The challenge is open to any commercially or home-built dinghy built from commercially available stock plans.

Spindrifts are a very good investment if you have a jr. sailor in your family. Unlike many dinghies used for trainers (such as the Optimist) you do not “outgrow” a Spindrift. While the boat is very suitable for children and inexperienced adults, in the hands of a good competitive sailor, the boat offers the challenge of top end racing.   If you need more carrying capacity in less length, take a look at our  Catspaw pram series .

Yankee Tender

Classic construction

From Issue   January 2020

T he plans for Yankee Tender first appeared in 1979 in WoodenBoat Nos. 30–32 as part of a how-to-build series. When you get the six generously detailed sheets of plans from The WoodenBoat Store for this 12′4″ flat-bottomed rowing skiff, you also get reprints of those magazine articles with their numbered photos and written instructions. What a deal! If you have some heavy paper and a clean-swept floor you can get right to work on laying out the molds, as no lofting is necessary. Study the plans carefully, and you’ll learn a great deal about building a flat-bottomed lapstrake boat with wood in the traditional manner. I sure did.

yacht tender plans

The Yankee Tender’s profile shows the strong curves of the sheer and rocker.

The tender is an elaboration on a boat designed and built by Asa Thompson in New Bedford, Massachusetts, more than 90 years ago. He started a one-man boatshop specializing in canoes during the late 1800s, and over the ensuing years adapted his methods to changes in boaters’ tastes. In 1927, he built a flat-bottomed yacht tender with canoe-like scantlings. This tender-skiff is in the Mystic Seaport Museum collection and is occasionally on public display—I got to see it two years ago at The WoodenBoat Show . For some time, I’d been contemplating building a lightweight, trailerable, traditional, flat-bottomed rowing boat with a saltwater pedigree. Three things that make this boat a standout: its lightness, both in weight and looks; its double-planked bottom; and its fish-well center seat. Seeing Asa Thompson’s skiff led me to The WoodenBoat Store’s plans.

The plans call for either white pine or northern white cedar for the transom, planking, and bottom—I built with cedar—and the remainder of the structure is white oak. The 3/8″-thick side planks are beveled at both sides of the lap to reveal a delicate edge. The sawn-oak frames are sided 5/8” and given a graceful curve; the inwale and guardrail are as fine as a canoe’s, helping bring the boat’s weight down. My boat weighs 130 lbs.

The bottom is cross-planked with two overlapping layers of 3/8″ cedar with a sheet of canvas slathered in bedding compound sandwiched in between. This construction prevents the gaps and subsequent leaks that occur when boats with single-plank bottoms dry out.

yacht tender plans

The cross-planked bottom doesn’t require framing, so it provides a clean, unobstructed surface.

The cross-planking requires no framing on the bottom and provides an uncluttered interior. The fish-well structure of the center seat makes it sturdy and stiffens up the light hull, and gives great dry storage (or live bait) options.

The Yankee Tender is much more than an excellent introduction to traditional boatbuilding. The materials and fastenings lists are detailed and complete. There are even drawings for help in setting up the simply designed strongback. You’ll learn how to bevel the laps, cut gains, scribe frames, and get a sweet, fair sweep of the sheer. And when you’re done, you’ll have an elegant skiff.

I didn’t make the A-framed building platform as shown in the plans, but set the molds up on a ladder frame I’d made for a previous boat. The transom is of 7/8″ cedar, edge-glued with splines. The inner stem is sawn from 8/4 white oak. The transom and stem bevels are shown on the plans and can be gotten out on a tablesaw. With the molds squared and plumbed and the stem and transom in place, a temporary 1×4 backbone batten is secured to stem and transom and to notches in the centers of the molds to complete the setup.

I ripped the chines’ bevels on the tablesaw. It’s recommended that the chine logs be steamed to ease twisting and bending into place. My steambox is only 6′ long, so I steamed the aft ends and clamped them into place until cool. Later in the day I steamed the forward ends and clamped them overnight before fastening.

The cedar I had for the planking was 1″ thick and live-edged. I picked through the boards looking for knotty and narrow planks that would work better for the bottom planking, saving cleaner material for the sides. After sawing straight, parallel edges and resawing to a thickness of 3/8″, I laid out the random-width boards to dry-fit the planks for the inner bottom, hand-planing edges for a good fit. As per the plans, I laid a strand of cotton wicking along the chine as each bottom board was nailed home tight.

The garboards have a width of 10-1/2″ at the stem. My bandsaw can only resaw planks up to 8-1/2″ wide, so I needed to narrow the stock before resawing it, and then edge-glue two pieces with epoxy to achieve the required width. Next, I trimmed the ends of the inner bottom boards to match the chine bevel. The plans call for a strand of cotton as caulking between garboard and stem, chines, and transom cleats, but here I applied a healthy bead of polysulfide before fastening the plank.

After trimming the garboard flush with the bottom and sanding the inner bottom planking, I dry-fit the outer bottom planks, overlapping the garboard edges and covering the seams of the inner bottom planks, noting where nails lay, then pre-drilled and temporarily screwed-in the planks. With an oscillating tool and a flush-cutting blade, I trimmed the bottom planks flush with the outer surface of the garboards. I numbered the planks, removed the screws, and stacked the planks in order.

Then came the fun part! I had purchased No. 10 cotton duck and laid it out on the smooth inner bottom, cutting it to overhang a few inches. Before starting the bedding process, I lavishly brushed the bottom planks with boiled linseed oil, allowing them to soak it in overnight. Then I thinned Interlux Boatyard Bedding Compound to a peanut-butter consistency with boiled linseed oil, spread it evenly across the inner bottom, then laid out and rolled the canvas, squeezing the bedding compound into the fabric. Next, I trowled more of the goo onto the canvas. I then replaced the pre-drilled outer bottom planks, the setting and driving the screws home. I drew the double bottom tight along the plank seams with 7/8” copper clout nails, hammered in and clenched every 5″ to 6″. All told, I used 2-1/2 quarts of bedding compound and 1 quart of linseed oil.

After the remaining three planks were hung, I flipped the hull and fitted and attached the outer stem, breasthook, quarter knees, frames, and rails. I then flipped hull back upside-down to fit and fasten the skeg and keel. Finally, right-side up again, the fish well and thwarts were installed and oarlock pads were riveted to the rails.

The generously rockered bottom keeps the transom well clear of the water when the boat has a solo rower aboard.

T wo hours from where we live are places like Mystic, Connecticut; Bristol, Rhode Island; and Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Cape Cod isn’t too much farther. The Yankee Tender is easy to transport on a lightweight trailer. Its skeg, keel, and stem settle readily onto my trailer’s rollers and, by modifying the bunk boards just a bit, the hull rests its flat bottom for secure strapping. Two spry people can lift the light hull. For cartopping, roof racks that span 5′ are necessary to accommodate the boat’s 52” beam.

My first go at rowing Yankee Tender was on a quiet lake. It took some getting used to the angle of the 8-½′ oars I had made. The center seat height of 9-3/4″ is very comfortable, but my hand position seemed to be higher toward my chest than I’m accustomed to. The boats I’m more familiar with have a lower freeboard. It felt a bit like driving a Ford after years in a Toyota—the controls weren’t all in the same place. The Yankee Tender’s plans offer no recommendation for oar length, but the plan for Asa Thompson’s original 11′3″ skiff suggests 6′6″ oars. I felt these were too stubby. With practice, I found a quicker cadence, 8′ oars, and a shorter stroke worked well, especially with any headwind.

The boat is as zippy as a sports car in its maneuverability. With one occupant, it rides high on the water, with no drag at the transom. The skeg keeps you on course, yet the wicked rocker allows quick spins. The tender’s width and flared topsides allow you to scooch over on the center seat to a rail so you can open one of the hinged fish-well covers without making the hull unsteady. The boat moves along with ease; it’s not a flier but it offers a safe, dry, seaworthy ride.

yacht tender plans

The tender has two rowing stations, but it is not intended for tandem rowing. The forward station is used for rowing with a passenger.

With two adults on board, the rower occupies the forward thwart and the passenger sits in the stern with the angled transom as a comfortable backrest. Proper weight distribution is important to keep an even keel. The tender carries its load well with its fullness forward and ample beam. Settled into the water with the weight of two aboard, the boat has added stability, and is still lively and quick on a turn. The tucked-up transom makes it easy to back into shore and disembark dry-footed.

Tom DeVries studied fine woodworking with James Krenov in the early 1990s. He and wife Tina live in central Massachusetts surrounded by white-pine and red-oak trees. Tom drives north for his white cedar planking stock and wishes his lumberyard still carried spruce 2x6s.

I’m now building a Yankee Tender myself. I like the lines and traditional look as Tom does. It is quite straightforward in terms of woodworking skill level. I did deviate from the traditional design by using a sheet of 3/8” marine plywood for the outer bottom instead of crossplanking. Otherwise I stuck with the plan described in WoodenBoat.

Though the double-layer bottom is no doubt more time-consuming and probably costlier than plywood, I enjoy the pace and scale of the “old-fashioned” way. I also like the look of the oil finished cedar in the bottom of my boat.

Another option I considered for the Yankee Tender bottom was the method Harry Bryant uses on his dory skiff Daisy. He uses 3/8″ cedar cross-planked for the inner bottom and epoxies an outer layer fore and aft—in effect a 2-ply cedar plywood. The glue-up would work best with two people and I’m generally alone in my shop.

I’m curious how you treated the end grain of the plywood at the stern, as the bottom overhangs the transom?

I’ve liked this boat from the first time I saw it decades ago. It’s simple without being plain. Being more into shapes than woodworking, if I were building a similar craft, I would probably substitute plywood for all the solid wood planking. Then I’d cover the hull with epoxy-saturated fiberglass. I would definitely try to preserve most of its curves, especially in profile. The builder did a fine job of it but, if it were mine, I’d be a little too afraid to treat it like a simple flat-bottomed skiff. It’s nice to to see this design again.

I beg pardon of Harry Bryan for my erroneous “t”. I suspect there’s a watery association with Wooden Boat’s Associate Editor Anne Bryant in my mind as my thoughts drift Down East. Mr. Bryan’s double planking method is described in WoodenBoat 126.

Hi. I built an original Asa Thompson skiff for a client many years ago; it was one of the best short, flat-bottom skiffs I have rowed. I used marine ply for the bottom, 3/8″ I think, and 1/4″ for the garboards. Sheathed this unit with epoxy and cloth, then used cedar for the top 2 lapstrake planks. Cherry transom, oak framing and rails—looked pretty good. The second owner brought it to the Wellfleet Rowing Rendezvous a couple of years ago, still rowed and looked great.

My plan to seal end grain anywhere it occurs involves liberal application of unthickened epoxy.

This design is truly eye candy at its best. We are considering building one at the shop to replace our Nutshell on the pond behind our buildings. Ours will be an ultralight version for ease of manhandling at the dock. As always, a very good article from Small Boats Magazine .

Late to this conversation. I built a Yankee tender about 30 years ago now using white oak with red cedar planking. My only deviation from the original plans was that I didn’t like the seating plan and went with a stern seat, rowing bench, and bow seat. She has served us well to get out to our mooring and just pleasant rowing. She rows and tracks very well but is a bit “tender.” Having done the double cross planking with light canvas in between using lots of polysulfide. I would not do that bottom again. It was dry for at least ten years but when it started leaking there is no fixing that complicated stepped joint. At that point I had to pull the whole bottom off including the keel structure. I replaced this with 1/2″ plywood, first routing a small groove into which I set up essentially a polysulfide gasket and then bedded the entire thing in polysulfide using silicone-bronze screws (hate removing those ring nails!). This fix remains tight after nearly 20 years. This year, my son had to prep and launch her (I’ve been waiting for this day). It looks like the keel may need replacing next year. There is also some softening of the bottom at bow and stern. I attribute this to the fact that the boat sits on a dock with those ends exposed due to the extreme rocker of the bottom. She has served us well.

I’m currently building a Yankee Tender and am planning on using the technique described in the article for the bottom. How much bedding compound and linseed oil should I expect to need?

I am interested in building this boat. Some practical questions: roughy how much does it cost to build and equip? I have a small wood working shop that has a double door exit and wonder how much the opening needs to be to remove it?

I purchased these plans because I liked the lines and clean woodwork. I build model boats and am wanting to get away from store-bought kits and build directly from plans. This boat is a perfect fit for me to do that. Im thinking a 1:12 scale model in my future.

Tender Behind by John Welsford

Seriously seaworthy yacht tender.

URL: http://jwboatdesigns.co.nz/plans/tenderbehind/

Description:

I knew the voice on the phone, Twenty five years ago that voice had tried to convince me that A+B=C! And not only that, but he’d also informed me that if I were to flick another rubber band in class he’d give me a tender behind!

Now here was Bill Lomas, the maths teacher of my delinquent youth asking me for a tender behind! After explaining the reason for my merriment and sharing a good laugh, we got down to business.

The requirement was for a tender for his small motor sailer.

"Big enough for Elsie and me, plus some gear and maybe two others at times. Short enough to go up on deck, light enough to be easily lifted up there and easy for an old amateur to build. Oh yes, we don’t have a life raft on the yacht so it has to be our lifeboat as well!"

No longer young, and bothered by severe arthritis in his knees Bill also needed a boat unusually stable for something so small. Reflecting that life is rarely easy, I told Bill I’d be back to him in a few days.

He liked my preliminary drawings, and we went ahead with what became known to us as "Tender Behind", a little boat that has become very popular with the many others who have built her. Bill worked away steadily at the new boat, thoroughly enjoying the building and seeing T.B. taking shape. I visited regularly, at first to keep tabs on the new design as it went together, then to visit the man who was rapidly becoming a friend. I found out that he was in fact a qualified Naval Architect, a fact that he had been loth to mention before as few people appreciate that the design of small craft is not something that a man taught to calculate the internal structure of ships is familiar with.

Bills invariable good humour and enthusiasm for life made visiting the Lomas home an occasion to look forward to, but sadly he did not live to see T.B. in the water. Bill Lomas died on Christmas day 1989.

I bought the nearly completed boat from Elsie, and still have her. She’s done a lot of miles, carried enormous loads and done some goodly voyages on her own. I used her at Traditional Small Craft Society meetings one season when I was between “real” boats, and often took three or four adults exploring several miles up an estuary.

In trials we found that she rowed well for something so short, carried eight people for a few strokes of the oars without swamping and has stability that has to be experienced to be believed. This is one of the few small boats in which one can safely stand up and heave a carton of stores over the rail of the mothership.

Although the rig was intended as one that would never get small children into trouble while sailing around an anchorage, at least two very grown-up lady children have built their "T.B.s" at 1O% longer (just multiply the fore and aft measurements by that amount, I don’t think it would go well if any longer though) with a larger balance lug rig and are using their wee boats for quite adventurous trips. One in fact takes her sleeping bag and puptent. Cruising comes in many guises and this might just be the smallest practical cruiser yet.

She sails really well, in fact the wife of one owner tells me that once their forty footer is secure in its anchorage the main debate is who is first to sail the tender and for how long! She tows straight and very dry, motors safely with my 2hp Honda outboard and is still light enough to be easily roof racked on our little car.

It’s a favourite with the family, and with many others as well. I’ve still got mine and have owned her for longer than any other boat I’ve ever had.

Power and Sailing Yacht Plans List Copyright 2023 Michael Kasten Updated April  2023 This page provides a list of our currently available boat plans, a link to the web page for each design, and a price for each design.  What Do Plans Cost..? Below is a list of prices for each plans package that we offer. The first group lists our Sailing Yacht Designs and the second group lists our Power Yacht Designs .  Some designs are COMPLETED and others are INCOMPLETE.      COMPLETED STOCK DESIGNS :  The Estimating Plans and Building Plans prices given below in BOLD BLACK TYPE are for a FULLY COMPLETED STOCK DESIGN , the plans for which can be shipped immediately on receipt of your order.   Please see our Stock Design web page for a description of what is included, and how our prices have been determined.    INCOMPLETE OR 'SEMI-STOCK' DESIGNS :   Prices given below in PLAIN TEXT indicate plans that are INCOMPLETE.  WHY , you may ask, have I even bothered to list INCOMPLETE designs below...? Since people's circumstances often change, it is inevitable that some boat design projects will be abandoned before they are finished, and in some cases after considerable work has been done.  This can occur as is so well described in the first few pages of Rockwell Kent’s excellent non-fiction sea story, “North by East” , or as the result of a change of fortune, failing health, or for a myriad of other reasons. A few of the INCOMPLETE designs listed below (not very many) have been developed on my own, in other words, with myself as the 'client'.  Others have been created at the behest of an individual client to explore an idea or a concept.  Either way, I believe all of the designs listed below have merit.  We offer these INCOMPLETE designs at a substantial discount versus what it would cost to develop an entirely CUSTOM design, the difference being that the 'discovery' phase of the design process has already been accomplished.  Even so, there is still quite a bit of WORK REMAINING in order to complete the Plans Packages for those INCOMPLETE designs.  The prices given below reflect our actual cost to complete the Estimating Plans or the Building Plans Package for each design, assuming there will be no changes to the design as it is presented.  If you take umbrage with the cost of our INCOMPLETE designs, I urge you to read our Learning Yacht Design web page.  If one of the designs below is "close" to what you have in mind but you would like to tweak it some, I will be pleased to provide a detailed estimate for any revisions you have in mind.  If any of these designs is of interest, please inquire .    CUSTOM YACHT DESIGN :  A new CUSTOM design will necessarily include the process of " discovery " which represents Stage I of the design process, during which all options are on the table including size, type, configuration, layout, rig, materials, etc.  By comparison, given that many of the INCOMPLETE designs listed below have already had a considerable amount of design work done, very roughly the cost to create a CUSTOM design can be on the order of some 20% to 50% greater than the prices listed for the INCOMPLETE designs below, in order to accommodate the "discovery" process on the way to achieving a completed set of Building Plans.  Is the added cost worth it...?   Yes , we believe so. Please see our article on Custom Yacht Design for our best answer to that question, where you will also find an overview of the design process itself.  Our Design Stream article additionally describes how we use CAD to best advantage throughout the design process. If a new Custom Yacht Design is of interest, please inquire for more information.    COMPLETED NC CUTTING FILES :  There are several designs below for which NC Cutting files are ALREADY DEVELOPED , in which case the price is in BOLD BLACK TYPE .    DEVELOPING NEW NC CUTTING FILES :  All other NC Cutting File prices are listed in PLAIN TEXT, and reflect our actual cost to develop NC Cutting Files for that design from scratch, in which case they can be developed for metric or imperial dimensioned materials as needed. Please see our CAD Design Stream article for more information about our NC development process.    ORDERING INFORMATION : All prices are given in US Dollars and are subject to change at any time.  To place an order, please see our contact information below. To order by fax or by mail, a PDF Order Form has been provided for your convenience.    What's Included...? Estimating Plans - Building Plans - NC Cut Files... ESTIMATING PLANS :  Since all the basic information about each of our designs is available here at our web site, and for free, we no longer offer basic Study Plans.   Instead, we offer a much more useful and complete Estimating Plans for each of the designs listed below. Our Estimating Plans include the following: Drawings:    Sail Plan / Exterior Profile Drawing Interior Profile & Arrangement Drawing (one to four sheets, depending on vessel size) Structure Drawings (one or two additional sheets, depending on vessel size)    Documents:    Drawings & Documents List Written Vessel Specification Detailed Equipment List Structural Scantling List Laminate Schedule (if needed) Structure Weight & Surface Areas Builder Short List appropriate to the specific design Cover Letters to Builders re: scope of project, etc.    Our Estimating Plans are useful for study, planning, commentary, or mark-ups in the event you want to consider variations on the layout or the rig.  Primarily though, the Estimating Plans are intended for Cost Estimating .   Considering the price lists given below, the Estimating Plans represent an outstanding bargain and include quite a lot of useful information. Our Designer's Cover Letter serves as an introduction to the builder and outlines the scope of our involvement.  Our Owner's Cover Letter is a template which you can modify as needed in order to provide an introduction to the builder; to outline your intended build timing; and to let them know what stage of completion you intend their quotation to cover. NOTE :  Estimating Plans do not contain sufficient detail for actual construction of the vessel.  However the Estimating Plans do provide enough information so that builders can provide a firm quotation for construction, and to allow a preliminary construction contract to be negotiated.    BUILDING PLANS : Prior to your construction contract being finalized, and in order to actually build the boat, the complete Building Plans will be required.  Our Building Plans include all the contents of our Estimating Plans as listed above, plus all the remaining detail drawings required for construction, including the following: Drawings:    Lines Drawing Offsets (if not CNC cut) Structural Sections Joinery Sections Joinery Details Construction Details (Several Sheets Including Hull & Deck Fittings; Ports; Doors; etc.) Spar Plans (Sail: Several Sheets Including Spar Dimensions; Spar Fitting Details; etc.) Machinery Plans (Power:  Several Sheets as Needed) Numerous Detail Drawings as Needed       Vessel Design Data, including:    Hydrostatics & Trim Stability Compliance Report Performance Analysis Hull Data for Propeller Calcs Endurance & Range Under Power    Building Plans also include a thorough review of and revision of the Equipment List and Vessel Specification in order to suit your specific equipment preferences. If the drawings or documents require further revision for your use, for example to make changes to the layout or the rig, we'll be pleased to provide an estimate for making those revisions. Please see our Stock Plans page for more information about what's included, and how we can customize a stock design to suit your requests.    CUSTOM DESIGN : We can modify any of our Stock Designs to suit a newly defined purpose, or we can work with you to create an entirely new design based on your requests. Please feel free to inquire about any modifications you may have in mind, or about creating a new Custom Design to suit your specific requirements.  In way of inspiration we have provided quite a variety of Prototype Designs , any one of which can be modified as needed to create a fully completed yacht design.    NC CUTTING FILES : Several of the Stock Designs listed below for construction in metal have already been developed for automated NC cutting of the metal parts. "NC" simply means 'Numerically Controlled' - a technology for creating pre-cut boat parts directly from the 3D design model. For details regarding the benefits of NC Cutting and to find out what's included with an NC Cutting File Package , check out our article on Our CAD Design Stream and the articles linked from there.    MORE INFO :  Please see our Site Map to quickly find any of our designs, to peruse our portfolio, and to find our articles on a variety of boat related topics.

What Will the Boat Cost..?

This is the most difficult question of all, and one for which I do not have a ready answer.  However it is a question that ultimately does have an answer...!   For any meaningful cost discovery it is necessary to solicit actual quotations for construction from a short list of qualified builders.

For that purpose, we offer completed ESTIMATING PLANS for several of the designs listed below, with their prices listed in BOLD BLACK TEXT .  For any designs listed below that are INCOMPLETE, we have also provided the cost to develop ESTIMATING PLANS for that design, the prices for which are given in PLAIN TEXT.

Please see the following articles for information about boat costs, and about the process of soliciting estimates from builders:

IMPORTANT DESIGN NOTES

GRP or PLYWOOD : Any of our Aluminum or Steel designs can be converted for construction in GRP or cold moulded plywood. The cost of any such revisions will be quoted separately. For more information, please inquire .

STEEL : Any Steel vessel can easily be re-specified with an aluminum structure. To convert a stock steel design to aluminum, please add 20% to the cost of the Estimating Plans or the Building Plans for that design.  Conversion of NC Cutting Files from steel to aluminum will however require a completely new set of NC cutting files, for which please inquire for an estimate.

* ALUMINUM : The Aluminum vessels listed above can only be built in steel if the design is extensively modified for that purpose in order to accommodate the added weight of the structure. For more information, please inquire .  Conversion from aluminum to steel will also require a completely new set of NC cutting files, for which please inquire for an estimate.

** WOOD : Please note that our large Wooden Vessel plans are generally priced higher, since revisions will nearly always be required in order to accommodate the differing wood species that will be available for construction, and the consequent differences in scantlings and overall weight. Those revisions (within reason) are included in the prices indicated above.

*** NC CUTTING FILES : Although a complete Building Plans set is required in order build any of these boat designs, the NC Cutting Files are entirely optional . In other words, the Building Plans are required , even if you purchase the NC Cutting Files for that design. The cost of NC Cutting Files is in addition to the cost of the Building Plans. Please see above for discount options that are available...

The NC Cutting Files shown above with prices given in BOLD BLACK TYPE have already been developed , in which case they will have been created for either metric or imperial dimensioned materials, and for either steel or aluminum (noted in parentheses).

If the vessel will be built in a location that requires changing the measurement system , and / or if there is a change from steel to aluminum or aluminum to stee l structure, then additional work will be required, the cost of which will be quoted separately and in addition to the above prices. Should such changes to any of our designs be of interest, please inquire for an estimate.

YACHT TENDERS

Our aluminum yacht tenders are the perfect companion to any of the yachts described above.

8' to 14' Prams - Building Plans: $250 . NC Cutting Files: $250 . (The Building Plans are required. The NC Cutting File is optional. The cost of the NC Cutting file includes interacting with the cutter of your choice to assure compliance with their cutting equipment.)

PROTOTYPE YACHT PLANS

If you don't see a design here that suits your requirements, please see our Prototypes web page for links to other designs that are either under development, or that may offer a few possible ideas in way of inspiration...

Preliminary study sketches may be available for some of our Prototype Designs. If you would like to know more about one of them, please inquire .

NACA Foil Shaped Low Drag Aluminum Paravanes

Please see our Roll Attenuation article for more information on Paravanes for Motor Yachts.

These low-drag paravanes are balanced and are adjustable for different speeds. They make use of NACA foil shaped surfaces combined with a lead ballasted NACA foil shaped bulb. They are designed to be machined out of marine grade aluminum plate and rod so that they can be shaped, and so they are lighter for a given wing area than steel paravanes would be.

The sizes given above are conservatively rated. In other words each size can be used on a larger vessel than is indicated. It is all a matter of degree. The roll attenuation will simply be more or it will be less, as compared to that of a larger or smaller wing area.

Paravane effectiveness is a function of wing area and pole length vs. your vessel’s righting moment. With a larger the vessel the poles can be made longer, achieving greater leverage, therefore a greater effect for the same size paravane.  If you have an existing vessel on which you would like to install these paravanes, but you don't have a paravane rig, we can provide a design for the rig that will fit your boat.

For more information, please inquire .

THE PIPPIE 8 YACHT TENDER

This plan is provided in response to comments by our builder that they have experienced some difficulty in obtaining plans for easily built but still substantial tenders for the larger boats they are building. It may be downloaded at no cost from this page (below) by anyone who is interested. In return we ask only the following. 1. Please make only one copy of the plan. Whilst it is provided free, it is copyright and we would prefer each builder download their own copy directly from this site so that we will have some idea statistically of its popularity. 2. This dingy is derived from our Pippie 8 Sailing Trainer, plans for which are available on this site for a very low cost. The Tender may be easily upgraded to the sailing version - please do consider this as it will result in a much more versatile boat.

The journeyman nesting, sailing dinghy .

Is a purpose designed yacht tender, for sail, row or motor power. Designed for maximum load carrying, stability, and simplicity.

Powered either by a simple and efficient 5.5 sq. m boomless sprit rig, a 7'6" set of oars or a small (<4hp) outboard. The Journeyman has the versatility to be a capable tender or work-boat as well as a fun boat to silently explore your local anchorage or inlet. The boomless sprit rig is simplicity itself with the furled sail and spars simply dropped into position. The sheet is clipped in and a single line releases the sail and you are ready to go.

A simple to build Do It Yourself plywood boat

The CnC cut plywood comes together effortlessly using the stitch-and-glue construction method.

Made from 3 sheets of 6mm BS1088 marine ply and 1 sheet of 12mm, this is the largest boat that could come from standard sheet sizes.

Construction of the various parts of the boat are simplified due to the self locating slots and tabs throughout the design. You could almost build this boat without a tape measure.

The boat is self jigging, using the bulkheads and transom to pull the hull panels into shape, the addition of the gunwales then locks the boat into position and you are ready to start gluing and taping it all together.

Nested for storage,

The Journeyman dinghy takes up only 5'9" (1.75m) x 4'6" (1.37m). 6 bolts hold her together, and the centerboard seat bridges the two halves for easy assembly.

Carries up to 5 adults

Built in buoyancy and highly stable hull..

With 2 buoyancy chambers in the aft hull and 1 in the forward hull, providing 75L of buoyancy on the GRP model and 60L on the Plywood version, the Journeyman dinghy is virtually unsinkable. With its highly stable hull form the Journeyman is able to easily carry 5 people in rowing and motor mode and can be comfortably sailed with 3 people. Two positions for the thwart seat and two positions for oarlocks enable the Journeyman to be set up for different loading situations .

yacht tender plans

Prams are a traditional design concept in which the bow of the boat is a flat panel instead of a point, which in turn allows a wide beam forward.  Imagine your regular rowing skiff with the pointy end chopped off.  You lose 15-20% of overall length but very little carrying-capacity:  This is the beauty of prams and the reason why sailors have favored them as yacht-tenders for centuries.

Bedard Yacht Design’s Ozona X Nesting Pram evolved from the hugely popular Ozona Pram and a significant demand from cruisers for a nesting dinghy, slightly larger.  A lot of thoughts went into the design of this new boat:  The seats are removable to reduce nesting size to 62″x50″x21″ with each half weighing less than 50lb; Once the pram is joined, the seats are locked in place, to avoid any risk of losing them in a capsize or while towing.

Compass Tenders

12-13m landing craft.

Compass has embraced the beamy potential of the cat with its latest tender. Hull No 1 was delivered in 2020, featuring a draught of just 57 centimetres and a bow ramp to make beach landings a breeze. With removable seating taken out, the 12-square-metre loading bay packs on water toys and dive kit, complete with removable racks for cylinders. With the seating in, this space can carry eight guests, bringing the total seated passengers to 12. Whatever the configuration, there’s a shaded dining area plus a shower, head and galley. The model is customisable, with Yanmar, Volvo or Cummins engine packages, and Hamilton or Rolls-Royce water jets for a top speed of 40 knots. compasstenders.com

Dario Messina penned the sharp lines and tight styling of the 7.35-metre NY24. It comes in three variants: GT, Deluxe and Limo, with the latter the best contender for superyacht tender use. With a 300hp Volvo D4 putting power into the water via an Aquamatic drive with duoprop, its top speed of 32 knots is guaranteed to ruffle its passengers’ hair. The Deluxe version features stylish pilot chairs by ideaeITALIA, and there’s even room for a convertible sofa berth and heads below. Audiovisual, fridges and almost any other add-on you desire can be fitted, and there’s also a nod to sustainability in the form of Oltremateria, a recyclable finishing material. nereayacht.com

Yachtwerft Meyer

Solaris tender.

Bremen-based Yachtwerft Meyer is well known for its reliable semi-custom support boats, but it was the catamaran tender to 139.7-metre Solaris which caught the eye when it launched in 2021. Engineers employed the same rounded Marc Newson styling as on  the mothership, with a frameless curved windscreen, lots of hidden storage, a drop-down beach landing platform and a hydraulic hardtop fixed in just two places. Its twin Hamilton jets are powered by two 480hp Volvo Penta D6s. yachtwerft-meyer.com

Chris-Craft

Launch 25gt.

Also available as an 8.5-metre model,  the 7.6-metre 25GT can be specced with sterndrives and a sleek fold-down hardtop for stowing in a large tender garage – its height can be reduced to a little over 1.5 metres at the touch of a button. Options abound,  from a heads compartment to trim tabs for wakeboarding. There’s also a forward cockpit, bathing ladder, deck shower and a fine blend of tech and design throughout. chriscraft.com

Falcon Tenders

Miss wonderly.

Southampton-based startup Falcon is carving out a niche for itself in fully custom superyacht tenders, and this 10.6-metre limo is its impressive calling card. Miss Wonderly showcases hybrid drive technology – a cutting-edge engineering feat for boats of this size. This allows the tender to operate in silent electric mode up to about nine knots before the twin 270hp inboards kick in. Elegant furniture below gives Miss Wonderly ’s luxurious cabin a lounge feel, and she is capable of ferrying 14 guests from superyacht to shore. falcon-tenders.com

Beiderbeck Designs

3-in-1 luxury tender.

Smart design thinking from beiderbeck has made it possible to combine a limo, SOLAS and rescue boat into one vessel, winning the Germany-based company a BOAT International Design and Innovation award in the process. Two 11-metre limo tenders are currently in build at Knierim Yachtbau, and a larger 13-metre version for 50 passengers is on the drawing board too. There’s a wetroom and a bar on board, plus comfortable seating throughout. Twin Volvo D4-300 engines give it a top speed of 30 knots. beiderbeckdesigns.de

Onda Tender

Onda Tender’s 371GT flagship model debuted at 2021’s Monaco Yacht Show , following requests for a larger version of the yard’s 331GT model . A generous beam of 3.28 metres coupled with high bulwarks means the vessel can serve as either a day cruiser or a chase tender. The 11 metre Gran Turismo is powered by Yanmar and Mercury Volvo engines for a top speed of 58 knots.

RAF Scampton, one of several alternate housing options for asylum seekers, would cost £45.1m more than keeping them in hotels

Plans to move asylum seekers from hotels in tatters after NAO report

Report also discloses approval was rushed through without developing safety plans or consulting councils

Rishi Sunak’s plan to save public money by moving asylum seekers out of hotels is in tatters after Whitehall’s spending watchdog disclosed that the government’s alternative sites will cost millions of pounds more.

The National Audit Office said attempts to place people seeking refuge in a barge, two former RAF bases and former student accommodation will cost £1.2bn – £46m more than keeping them in hotels.

By the end of March, the Home Office expects to have spent at least £230m developing four major projects: the Bibby Stockholm barge in Portland, Dorset; the former RAF bases at Scampton in Lincolnshire and Wethersfield in Essex; and former student accommodation in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.

So far just two of the sites are open, with about 900 people housed by the end of January, according to the watchdog’s findings.

A report released on Wednesday also discloses that approval was rushed through without developing safety plans for asylum seekers or consulting councils and local communities.

The Home Office was “still working with providers” in January to develop safety measures on the Bibby Stockholm, weeks after Leonard Farruku, 27, an asylum seeker from Albania, was found dead in a suspected suicide .

The findings follow the prime minister’s claim in August that he would stop asylum seekers using hotels and find alternative, cheaper sites.

“British taxpayers are forking out £6m a day to house illegal migrants in hotels and other accommodation,” Sunak told GB News. “That’s clearly wrong, it’s clearly unfair and that’s why I want to put an end to it. Now, in the short term, we’re finding alternative sites like the barges that we’re bringing in, which are new ways to deal with this problem which no one else has done but I’ve done.”

The findings come in a report which also discloses that:

The Home Office is considering scaling back the number of people at Wethersfield – which is in the constituency of the home secretary, James Cleverly – after reports of self-harm and violence among asylum seekers.

Officials secured large sites to house people before talking to local councils and MPs and used emergency planning regulations to ensure plans were rushed through.

The department pursued the programme despite “repeated” assessments that it “could not be delivered as planned”.

Reviews by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority rated the Home Office’s work on large-scale accommodation as “red”, meaning “successful delivery of the programme to time, cost and quality appears to be unachievable”.

The Home Office also rated its own performance as “red” as it recognised the challenges of the work, repeatedly revising accommodation targets “downwards”.

The department “prioritised awarding contracts quickly, and modifying existing contracts over fully-competitive tenders”, with “overly-ambitious accommodation timetables” leading to “increased procurement risks”.

The Home Office initially assessed that using large sites to house asylum seekers would be around £94m cheaper than hotels. But an updated assessment in January said that housing people in Scampton will cost £45.1m more than hotels, assuming the site is used until March 2028, while housing them in Huddersfield will cost £2m more.

Wethersfield will cost £0.5m less, the report said, while placing people in the Bibby Stockholm will cost £0.8m less.

According to the findings, the Home Office originally estimated setup costs at the former RAF bases would be £5m each but they increased to £49m for Wethersfield and £27m for Scampton. It assumed they would have 3,700 beds between them and use about 3,145 of these.

So far only Wethersfield, which has a capacity of 1,700, and the Bibby Stockholm, with space for about 500 men, are housing asylum seekers. At the end of January, there were 576 people at Wethersfield and 321 on the Bibby Stockholm, the report said.

Meg Hillier, the chair of the Commons’ public accounts committee, said: “The Home Office did not understand the challenges it faced in setting up large sites and moved too quickly, incurring losses, increasing risks and upsetting local communities. And the sites are housing fewer people than planned.

after newsletter promotion

“The Home Office must do better when it resets its programme.”

Enver Solomon, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, said: “This is another alarming example of bad policies being implemented badly at huge financial and human cost.

“Given the sums involved, it seems incomprehensible that the Home Office didn’t bother to produce business cases for three of the large accommodation sites before pushing ahead.”

Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary, called the report “staggering”. She said: “The British taxpayer is already paying out eye-watering sums on asylum hotels and now it turns out the sites they promised would save money are costing the taxpayer even more. Rishi Sunak has taken the Tories’ chaos and failure in the asylum system to a new level.”

A source close to Cleverly said that at a time of unprecedented global migration the government has created large sites that can be used to reduce the overall costs in the long run. “We have been clear these costs are too high and have answered the question Labour cannot, of where you can house asylum seekers when it is not possible to return them to their home country,” the source said.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We acted swiftly to reduce the impact on local communities by moving asylum seekers on to barges and former military sites.

“While we must provide adequate accommodation for asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute, thanks to the actions we have taken to maximise use of existing space and our work to cut small boat crossings by a third last year, the cost of hotels will fall – and we are now closing dozens of asylum hotels every month to return them to communities.”
