Photos show the luxury mega yachts that belong to Russian oligarchs — some of whom have hidden their ships as the UK ramps up sanctions.

 • Sanctions targeting Russian oligarchs threaten their luxury assets — including their mega yachts.
 • Many countries have implemented sanctions targeting Putin and Russian oligarchs following Russia's attack on Ukraine.
 • Insider compiled a photo list of some of the luxury vessels.

Russian billionaires' assets — including their megayachts — are in danger of being seized as countries continue to impose sanctions on Russian oligarchs in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

US President Joe Biden announced that the US will make a substantial effort to seize Russian oligarchs' assets.

"We are joining with our European allies to find and seize your yachts, your luxury apartments, your private jets," Biden said in his State of The Union address on March 1. "We are coming for your ill-begotten gains."

Since the US is not in "armed conflict" with Russia it may be legally tricky to seize assets like yachts, Insider reported .

"The threshold for seizing assets under sanctions is that the US has to be in armed conflict with the owner of the assets," Brian O'Toole, an economic sanctions expert, tweeted last Friday. "The idea of turning Russian corruption into Ukrainian assistance is lovely but this idea is illegal, period."

It can also be difficult to find out who the owners of these yachts are.

Offshore companies typically own the luxury vessels, but enough "public speculation" pointing to a Russian oligarch as an owner is likely "sufficient for a seizure," Insider reported .

Many of the oligarchs moved their yachts to places where they can't be seized, such as the Maldives, which does not have an extradition treaty with the US.

Insider has compiled a list of photos with mega yachts linked to Russian oligarchs.

Galactica Super Nova

Amid sanctions and seizures targeting Russian billionaires, Galactica Super Nova — said to be linked to the CEO of Russian oil firm Lukoil — is no longer detectable via ship tracker site MarineTraffic , The Daily Beast reported Thursday.

The superyacht — whose owner is named Vagit Alekperov — had just been in Montenegro last week, Insider reported .

Alekperov is not currently the target of any sanctions.

The yacht is almost 230 feet long and can hold up to 12 guests and 16 crew members, according to the ship maker Heesen Yachts .

The ship also has a helicopter pad that can turn into an outdoor movie theatre, also according to the ship maker.

The Amore Vero

ice superyacht owner

France seized Amore Vero, a 281-foot megayacht linked to oligarch and politician Igor Sechin, on March 3.

The yacht, Amore Vero, is estimated to have a value of $120 million . It has a swimming pool that doubles as a helicopter pad and a private deck for its owner, according to Oceana , the ship maker.

Per The Wall Street Journal , officials believe that Amore Vero is "owned by a company whose majority shareholder was Mr. Sechin," though the outlet does not provide the name of the company.

Sechin is the CEO of Rosneft, Russia's oil giant, and a former deputy prime minister. A known Putin ally , he was sanctioned by both the EU and the US before France seized his yacht last week .

Sechin was one of seven oligarchs sanctioned by the UK on Thursday.

People in Russia have referred to Sechin as "Darth Vader" and "the scariest man on Earth," according to The Guardian .

Alisher Usmanov has been sanctioned by the EU, the US, the UK, and Switzerland. His boat remains in Germany, but the country says it hasn't seized it.

Usmanov's Dilbar is "is the largest motor yacht in the world by gross tonnage," according to Lürssen , the German ship's maker.

It's 512-foot long and weighs 15,917 tons. The ship has been docked in Germany for months undergoing a "refitting," but last week Forbes reported that it was unable to leave the dock.

Germany, however, has denied that it formally seized Dilbar.

Forbes said that "the German federal customs agency is the 'responsible enforcement authority' and would have to issue an export waiver for the yacht to leave, and that 'no yacht leaves port that is not allowed to do so.'"

Still, multiple outlets reported that Usmanov has fired the crew on the Dilbar.

The Uzbekistan-born oligarch is a supporter of Putin.

"I am proud that I know Putin, and the fact that everybody does not like him is not Putin's problem," Usmanov told Forbes in a 2010 interview.

Though he also is not the target of any current sanctions, Vladimir Potanin's superyacht, Nirvana, is one of at least four ships docked in the Maldives .

Potanin is the Former First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia and was a longtime trustee for the Guggenheim museum before stepping down on March 2, according to The New York Times .

Nirvana is not Potanin's only superyacht, he also owns another named Barbara, according to Fortune .

Alexander Abramov's Titan, Alexei Mordashovis' Nord, and Oleg Deripaska's Clio are also located in the Maldives.

At 533 feet long, Roman Abramovich's Eclipse was the largest yacht on the globe until 2013 when the 590-foot Azzam overthrew it.

Abramovich, once Russia's richest man , is the departing owner of Chelsea FC soccer club. He was sanctioned by the UK on Thursday along with six other oligarchs, Insider reported .

The luxury boat has a host of amenities, including two helicopter pads, a missile detection system, and a swimming pool more than 50 feet long. It also has space for up to 36 guests and 70 crew members, according to Yacht Harbour .

Insider previously reported that it is currently docked in the Caribbean .

Another yacht named Solaris is linked to Abramovich. The vessel, worth approximately $600 million, left Spain Tuesday after having been under repair since late 2021, Insider reported.

Solaris is 460 feet and can host a total of 36 guests, according to SuperYachtFan .

Tango, owned by the US-sanctioned Viktor Vekselberg, is currently located in Palma, Spain.

Tango can host up to 14 people and is 254 feet long, won the 2012 World Superyacht Awards, and has an estimated worth of $120 million, according to SuperYachtFan .

Vekselberg is a Ukrainian-born businessman who owns Renova, a Russian conglomerate, according to The Guardian .

He was one of nearly two dozen Russian oligarchs and officials that the US sanctioned on Friday.

The US Treasury Department claims that he has close ties with Putin, and has announced that assets such as his $90 million jet and his superyacht Tango have been frozen, Insider reported .

Oligarch Gennady Timchenko's superyacht "Lena" was seized in the port of Sanremo, Italy on March 5, Reuters reported.

Timchenko is the owner of a private investment group, Volga Group and a shareholder of Bank Rossiya. The oligarch has been sanctioned by the EU, which describes him as a "long-time acquaintance of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin."

Timchenko was also sanctioned by the UK on February 22.

The superyacht is valued at around 50 million euros ($54 million), Reuters reported. It has fold-down terraces, as well as an "owner's suite" which opens out onto the sea with "gull-wing doors," according to its manufacturer, Sanlorenzo.

Italian authorities also seized a $71 million super-yacht belonging to one of the wealthiest men in Russia , Alexei Mordashov.

The 215-ft "Lady M" superyacht was seized in the Port of Imperia, northern Italy, a source confirmed to Reuters.

The yacht can accommodate up to six guests on and also has accommodation for four crew members, per the Superyacht Times .

The oligarch, who is the chairman of steel mining company, Severstal, has also been sanctioned by the EU, which says Mordashov is "benefiting from his links with Russian decision-makers." Mordashov has insisted he has "absolutely nothing to do" with Russia's attack on Ukraine.

THE world's first $100million icebreaker superyacht featured a deep-sea submarine, two helipads and was built to power through the Arctic.

The beastly 253-foot bronzed La Datcha could navigate through 16-inch-thick ice and had retractable stabilisers to help with drifting floes.

The La Datch superyacht was built to withstand the harshest of environments

Furthermore, its crew can stay afloat without refuelling for 40 days due to advanced fuel tank and waste disposal systems.

Launched in the port city of Vlissingen in the Netherlands, she cost a reported £80million to build .

Onboard, the vessel provided an endless list of amenities than can keep crew and passengers entertained for weeks.

Not only can you enjoy a sauna, but you can also pay a visit to the massage room or take a dip in one of two onboard hot tubs.

That was, of course, until it vanished into thin air.

The ship was built for Russian billionaire Oleg Tinkov, a Russian billionaire who was the founder and shareholder of Tinkoff Banks.

The oligarch, who previously boasted a net fortune of $1.2billion (£950m), was even happy to rent it out for other people to enjoy.

That was, however, if you could afford the £666,000 weekly fee.

Having planned to use the private icebreaker for just 20 days a year, Tinkov rented it out for the remainder of the time.

But when the UK placed sanctions on him just a month after Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, La Datcha suddenly disappeared.

Tinkov had been named as "a prominent Russian businessman" who had been involved in an area of strategic significance to the Russian government, and was stripped of all his assets.

In July 2023, however, Britain removed its sanctions on Tinkov nine months after he renounced his Russian citizenship.

Boat of the Week: Inside a 165-Foot Ice-Class Explorer Yacht That Can Go Anywhere in the World

"i-nova," one of the first authentic expedition yachts, was built to see the world. now she's looking for an owner ready to make that happen., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

This 165-foot explorer I-Nova is planning to cruise the world

To paraphrase the late Ella Fitzgerald, “It isn’t where you’ve been; it’s where you’re going that counts.” And when it comes to I-Nova , the 165-foot explorer yacht built for “uncompromising adventure,” that place is anywhere in the world. Now, it needs to find that place—or many places.

Built in 2013, the first of the Cosmo Explorer series was an owner’s labor of love who planned to see the remote corners of the world. Unfortunately, that never happened. Now up for sale, the yacht is searching for an owner who will make most use of her expedition hull.

I-Nova ‘s build team had a stellar international cast: A “Made in Italy” interior and exterior by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto. A Dutch collaboration between Vripack and Van Oossanen for the go-anywhere hull. The owner, planning to do an expedition series called the Cosmo Explorer, had the yacht built at Greek shipyard Megatechnica. Experts in the construction of commercial vessels, Megatechnica cut no corners during the five-year build process.

“The owner wanted to show what you could do outside of the Northern European shipyards,” Alex Banning, director at SuperYachtsMonaco, told Robb Report . “It was a project of his own doing, using best-in-class suppliers and builders.”

This 165-ft. expedition yacht is ready to cruise the world

I-Nova showed her expedition-yacht pedigree on a trip to Greenland. SuperYachtsMonaco

The result is an ice-class vessel equipped with some serious go-anywhere capabilities. Her vertical bow is hydrodynamically optimized to make her an efficient and long-range cruiser. The hull is reinforced with extra-thick steel plates specifically for polar expeditions. The propeller, sea chest, rudder, steering gear and seawater cooling systems meet ABS DO ice class requirements. And at 165 feet in length, though arguably compact for an explorer, her huge interior volume and shallow draft give her great versatility.

“When the first ideas and concepts emerged in 2009, I-Nova was right on the leading edge of the expedition sector of the market,” says Banning. “The owner wanted to keep it compact and practical, built like a hammer with as much of a silk glove as you can add, with all of those explorer capabilities.”

Included in that concept is what Banning refers to as the “opinion-dividing” rear deck built specifically to store a Fabio Buzzi 34 tender. The semi-enclosed rigid-hulled inflatable is a lasting testament to Buzzi, the owner’s friend, boat builder and racer who died last year in a speedboat crash. The Buzzi tender isn’t included in the sale, but it exemplifies the type of serious vessel that can be accommodated aboard I-Nova , along with a 5-ton crane with a 30-foot outreach, a second tender and a full range of water toys. Only serious explorers would have space for that many tenders and toys.

This 165-foot explorer yacht will cruise the world

The “Made in Italy” interior by Cristiano Gatto is modern, light and airy, a nice contrast to the buttoned-down exterior. SuperYachtsMonaco

“Some people think the Buzzi takes up too much space, but the owner thinks, ‘I’ve built a deck to carry my boat wherever’,” says Banning. “He likes driving it into all the tiny bays and swimming, diving and snorkeling from it. That’s what you can do with a boat deck like that.”

The owner’s original intention was to build an expedition series under the Cosmo Explorer brand. The concept would offer unrestricted cruising on vessels ranging from 148 to 210 feet.

This 165-foot explorer yacht will cruise the world

A beach club and dedicated dive room are located on the lower deck. A large terrace for evening drinks is found on the bridge deck. The observation deck offers panoramic views, as well as a covered exterior gym and spa pool. But the wow factor is reserved for the award-winning interior, which includes an extensive use of 50,000-year-old Kauri wood and a split-level master suite that can be used as an observation lounge, homeschooling room or even a cinema.

“Gatto took the lead on the project alongside the owner, which is why the interior and exterior gel so well, and the interior has a quirky yet hugely flexible layout,” says Banning.

Powered by twin MTU 16V 2000 M70 engines I-Nova offers low engine noise, low vibration and bags of autonomy. As Banning says, “she’s got great DNA.”

The yacht is for sale through SuperYachtsMonaco for $23.5 million. Check out its smart design below.

A Virginia couple is feared dead after three escaped prisoners stole their docked yacht from a Caribbean marina and fled to another island.

Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel, who live on their yacht, Simplicity, were last seen by a boating neighbor on Sunday afternoon in St. George’s on the island nation of Grenada, as they headed to a restaurant.

The pair live on their boat during the winter and arrived on the island two weeks prior, intending to stay another week before they went missing.

“They went into town [on Sunday] to have a little bite and to walk back,” Hendry’s sister Suellen Desmarais told WPTV-Tampa . “Somehow Ralph crossed paths in this teeny tiny town with these three men. What happened after that, we’re not sure.”

‘This was their whole life,” she added. “They didn’t own another home; they didn’t own cars; they owned Simplicity.”

Ralph Hendry and his wife Kathy Brandel were last seen by a boating neighbor in the St. George area on Sunday afternoon as they headed to a restaurant on the island nation of Grenada.

‘Ralph and Kathy are the kindest people in the entire world, and I just can’t understand how a tragedy like this could happen to people as kind and nice as them.”

Hendry and Brandel have sailed the same route for the past few years, from Virginia to Massachusetts before heading down to Florida to visit Desmarais, and eventually to the Caribbean where they would island hop, according to ABC News.

They went missing the same day that three fugitives, Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25, escaped the South St. George Police Station. The escapees then made their way to the marina, where they fled to another Caribbean island, authorities said.

They were subsequently captured on Wednesday in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Simplicity was recovered by authorities after a good Samaritan found it anchored off of a St. Vincent beach, where they boarded it and discovered the boat had been ransacked and "found evidence of apparent violence."

“The RGPF is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process,” the Royal Grenada Police Force said in a press release.

“It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens.”

The Simplicity was recovered by authorities after a Good Samaritan found it anchored off of a St. Vincent beach. When they boarded, they discovered the boat had been ransacked and “found evidence of apparent violence.”

Authorities spotted bloodstains in the interior but no sign of the couple, according to People magazine .

Desmarais, however, is holding out hope the couple is still alive.

“It feels made up, and I just can’t comprehend why someone would do this?” she said. “Why didn’t someone just take the boat?

‘What happened in Grenada was a perfect storm. It was a perfect tragedy of a perfect storm of a perfect love story.”

She also told Fox 5 DC, “Why would I presume anyone is dead with no body and DNA? I want to remain positive. I want to believe that they are alive,”

Hendry and Brandel’s two children and Hendry’s nephew traveled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines to join the search for the couple on Friday, according to reports.

“This investigation is in its infancy stage and the RGPF have dispatched a team of senior investigators and a forensic specialist to St. Vincent in furtherance of this investigation,” the RGPF said.

Ron Mitchell, a sailor, was separately charged with one count of Rape, three counts of Attempted Rape, two counts of Indecent Assault, and Causing Harm.

ICE yacht interior

To ensure that the inside met the owner’s exact specifications, Terence Disdale was entrusted to design and create the custom interior for the ICE Yacht.

The inside of the yacht is decorated in a similar manner to the outside, with bright and airy elements that complement the ship’s overall style.

The interior is incredibly well made and polished in an exquisite manner across the whole piece.

The upholstery is made out of light cream fabrics and leather, with exotic wood accents added.

This exterior was done by Igor Tim Heywood and his team, who designed the outside of the ICE Yacht.

He wanted the ICE Yacht’s exterior to look like it had a lot of space, with deck passages that looked like they were from a movie.

The inside of the yacht is also big and luxurious, with a minimalist modern design. This is what Tim Heywood wanted when he made the ICE Yacht.

He was able to achieve what he set out to do. A few carefully chosen, high-quality materials are used throughout the whole yacht.

Toward the front of the main deck, there is a beautiful owner’s private outdoor lounge area.

The ICE has very low emissions, vibrations, and noise, as well as a very clean operation when it was delivered to its new owners.

Inside world’s first $100m icebreaker superyacht that VANISHED when Russian billionaire owner was slapped with sanctions

Each of its six cabins feature a dressing room, toilet and a shower or bathtub.

There's even two helicopters, a professional dive centre, an on-board hospital.

Those are just some of the standout features of the world-class explorer yacht, which comes with 25 specialised crew on hand.

La Datcha, which translates to "summer house" in Russian, was commissioned to be the ultimate adventure vessel.

In July 2023, however, Britain removed its sanctions on Tinkov nine months after he renounced his Russian citizenship.

explorer-superyacht-yersin-arctic

Mapping the Arctic adventures of scientific superyacht Yersin

Yersin was built to combine scientific exploration with all the comforts of a superyacht. Owner François Fiat and Captain Jean Dumarais tell Sophia Wilson the story of this ice breaker's first exploration in the Arctic Circle

When 76.6-metre Yersin hit the water back in 2015, it marked a momentous shift in the world of expedition yachts. Not only had the boat, named after 19th-century physician and bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin, been designed to explore the globe, she had also been created to protect it as one of the world’s only sustainable, clean and green vessels. Her vast autonomous range, Ice-Class hull and sustainable credentials were well documented at the time but last year she finally got to flex her exploration muscles on her debut adventure to the Arctic Circle.

“I wanted to test the vessel,” says François Fiat, who devised and owns Yersin . “She was conceived specifically for these regions.” As tests go it was fairly extreme, with the yacht visiting Iceland and Greenland before crossing Baffin Bay and cruising down Baffin Island and on through Labrador, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. At her helm during the voyage was Captain Jean Dumarais who, having been involved in the yacht’s construction, was equally keen to test her capabilities. “It was preparation for future trips over there,” he explains. “The crew are not on board for the glitz and glamour of the Med. They want to go exploring.”

The yacht first headed north at the end of July, stopping in Iceland, before making her way to Greenland’s west coast. After clearing in Nuuk, Yersin headed to Ilulissat, which is home to the Jakobshavn Glacier. “It is one of the most productive glaciers in Greenland, which makes the largest amount of ice,” says Captain Dumarais. “Most of the icebergs that you meet are coming from that glacier.” At approximately 65 kilometres long and two kilometres thick, it’s famous for being the source of the iceberg that caused the Titanic to sink. As the yacht cruised further north, it also visited Eqi Glacier, which is accessible only by boat and was one of the captain’s highlights. “Polar explorer Paul-Émile Victor had a base there when he did his crossing of Greenland and you still find little houses attached to the rock. It is amazing that they are still there in this polar region so many years after he visited,” he says.

Fiat was equally entranced by Greenland’s northern territories. “The most fascinating thing for me was the immensity of the landscape,” he says. “We saw the ice caps from the sea and watched glaciers fall into the water. The air is very crisp and clear.” The pure air quality actually created an unforeseen issue for Captain Dumarais as it became increasingly hard to judge the distances to the shore. “Looking at the glacier it seems that it is near, but when you check it on a radar it is much further away than it appears,” he explains. “You have to verify the distance before you go over there in a tender, especially in ice-covered water. Otherwise it can take a very long time.”

As well as its stunning natural credentials, the trip also provided a fascinating insight into remote communities. “There are two or three main cities but after you head north there are only a few houses and a few dogs,” says Dumarais. “The towns have roads, but they stop at the end of each town, so [people] have to take a boat to visit other settlements.” The trip made Dumarais aware of the uncertain future that these traditional set-ups face. “You can see the movement of the population; a lot of people have moved to the major cities leaving only a few people in the villages. You will see a village with 20 houses and probably 15 of them are now uninhabited. It makes you realise just how fragile this equilibrium is,” he adds.

From Greenland’s Uummannaq, Yersin crossed Baffin Bay to Baffin Island, the largest island in Canada and the fifth-largest island in the world. This stretch of coast proved to be one of the best destinations for spotting sea life and polar bears. On this trip they chose not to have a naturalist on board to help them find bears, but they still had success. “We saw five, including a couple of cubs,” says Dumarais. “They definitely see you more than you see them, though. As they are white-on-white it is very difficult to spot them.”

One of the key parts of Yersin ’s design is her polyvalent room on the main deck, which can be used as a laboratory, media room or classroom as required. Even though this trip was not specifically for scientific purposes, scientists and television reporters did come on board for parts of the adventure. “We did some on-site fact-finding research,” explains Fiat. “In Iceland, we [studied] whales. In Greenland, we surveyed the formation of ice and glaciers falling in the fjords. In Nova Scotia, where the currents are very strong, we studied scallops with the scientists from the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.”

One of the biggest challenges of the voyage was that so much of the route was uncharted. “No map is available – land maps do exist, but it’s not possible to know where the seabed is or how deep the water is beneath the vessel. It could be 10 metres or 500 metres,” says Fiat. To ensure the route was safe, Yersin used sonar and sent the tenders in front to navigate. “We had to cruise slowly and make our own map,” adds Fiat. “When we were unfortunate enough to encounter fog, we had no other choice than to stop, which was quite distressing.”

The lack of charted maps was particularly perilous as the yacht cruised south from Baffin through the remote region of Labrador. “The area is not charted; it’s just a blank page,” recalls Dumarais. “It is treacherous because you can find rocks 50 miles [80 kilometres] offshore.” The yacht used the trip to help plot a safe route for future visitors. “Vessels that go to Labrador make their own way and record their route and send it to the team that creates charts, who will then list the vessel’s route as a new route on the map. Our voyage is now charted,” explains Fiat.

During its time in Labrador the yacht went for periods of longer than a week without seeing any other boats or humans. “In Greenland you can find some villages but in Labrador there is no one,” says Dumarais. Labrador also saw the yacht face some of the most challenging weather conditions. “We had good weather for most of the trip but of course we had a storm as well. If you are visiting this area you expect this,” he says. “We had to hide in a bay and protect ourselves. We were fine but I lost all my instruments because the winds were over 100 knots an hour.”

With such a remote cruising route, provisioning was also one of the biggest considerations that had to be factored in. “The preparations and storage start way before the trip. You have to be very organised,” says Dumarais. “Once you are further north you won’t find anything; you are happy if you find 10 apples.” The crew were able to catch some cod en route, which they used to cook fish and chips, and also purchased some halibut in Greenland. “We made a local dish from the South of France. It was quite amazing to have a glass of wine and that type of food so far from home,” says Dumarais. During the trip they were also able to have some meals on the sundeck using the yacht’s teppanyaki hot plate. “These are some of the best memories, when you are able to eat something unique in a place where you wouldn’t normally think it was possible,” he adds.

As autumn approached, the yacht continued to make her way south, including a stop in the Bay of Fundy, which is famed for having the highest tide in the world. As the seasons changed, those on board were fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights frequently. “We saw splendid aurora borealis,” says Fiat. “We were there in September, and from 10pm to 5am or 6am; the auroras constantly move above your head. It is not a rare phenomenon at all.” After making it as far south as Nova Scotia, Yersin crossed to Bermuda before returning to her native South of France.

So, did Yersin pass the test? According to her owner, yes – with flying colours. “ Yersin is perfectly equipped and she reacted very well, as anticipated. To make this kind of trip you need an appropriate vessel; I know of only one, and that is Yersin ,” he says. For Fiat, it is her combination of robustness and luxury that make her perfect for such a voyage. “Of course, there are many ice breakers out there, but without comfort on board. It is lovely to return after an expedition and enjoy a sauna, relax in a nice [suite], watch a movie and dine on sophisticated cuisine,” he adds.

Captain Dumarais agrees that there is no other yacht he would rather take to this part of the world. “If you have a boat as silent as ours, you can cruise along like you are visiting the place on a magic carpet. You can barely see a wake on the back of the boat,” he says. “It was breathtaking.”

This trip is clearly just the beginning of Yersin ’s adventures and Fiat has even more ambitious plans for her in the future. “My dream trip would be the Northwest or Northeast Passage ,” he reveals. “We stopped on its doorstep and it should be feasible as Yersin has all the capabilities to explore this route.”

Yersin is for sale (for the first time since she was built) with Fraser for €79.5 million.

2 Americans believed dead after escapees apparently hijack yacht, Grenada police say

By Caitlin O'Kane

February 23, 2024 / 12:15 PM EST / CBS News

Three escaped inmates in Grenada may have stolen a yacht and killed two passengers on the boat who are believed to be American citizens, the Royal Grenada Police Force said on Thursday. The three men escaped custody on Sunday and police believe they made their way to nearby St. Vincent on a stolen boat, according to a n ews release the force shared on Facebook.

The three men — identified as Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25 — were initially arrested in December and charged jointly with one count of robbery with violence. Mitchell also faced separate charges of one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, two counts of indecent assault and causing harm.

They were being held at the South St. George Police Station on the small Caribbean island when they escaped. As law enforcement from Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines searched for them, evidence suggested they got on a yacht docked in St. George, officials said.

inmates.jpg

The Royal Grenada Police Force "is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process," the force wrote on Facebook. "It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens."

The investigation is in its early stages and a team of senior investigators and a forensic specialist has been sent to St. Vincent, the force said.

In a separate incident, police said another suspect escaped while attending court on Wednesday and is on the run. The fugitive, identified as Levon Date, is charged in the 2023 killing of Canadian citizen Wayne Smart.

CBS News has reached out to the Royal Grenada Police Force for more information.

Bye-bye Bauder's? Currently closed Des Moines ice cream shop's future is unclear

ice superyacht owner

A famed Des Moines ice cream shop may be exiting the Ingersoll Avenue home it has occupied for over 100 years.

The scoop: Bauder's is "closed for the season" according to signage on its door at 3802 Ingersoll, though a real estate listing shows the 3,852-square-foot building is for sale with an asking price of $1.6 million, several times its $325,000 assessed value.

Real estate agent Mick Grossman declined to comment. A flier for the building, which also houses a beauty salon, calls it a "rare opportunity to own a property on Ingersoll."

Polk County assessor records show it was built in 1915. The building, last renovated in 1999, comes with an attached parking lot.

Kimberly Robertson, the owner of Bauder's, declined to say whether the shop will reopen in the spring.

"I have so many things in the air. I will address them as I can," Robertson said.

Jenay Baethke, owner of the neighboring Axis Salon Studio and tenant of Robertson, did not respond to requests for comment.

What is the future of Bauder's Ice Cream?

According to CityView , the shop has been for sale at least once previously. In November 2022, it quoted Robertson as saying she was looking to get out of the business.

“I’ve been here 51 years of my life, so I think it’s time that I just pursue options,” she told the Des Moines magazine. “It’s just a feeler.”

Generations of Des Moines residents have treasured Bauder's for its ice cream, part of the business since at least the 1930s. But it was first and foremost a pharmacy until 2016, the year after owner and pharmacist Mark Graziano, Robertson's brother, went to federal prison following his conviction for diverting thousands of narcotic pain pills and evading $577,000 in taxes.

Graziano handed the store over to his sister, its fate uncertain, though she has kept it in business.

The store's now less-clear outlook casts uncertainty over another Bauder's institution: the much-loved peppermint bars it has sold annually for about two decades at the Iowa State Fair. But there may be hope for those craving the cookie-crusted concoction.

More: How Bauder's peppermint bars became a fair favorite

Robertson owned a storage building connected to the former Donut King storefront at 1205 E. 33rd St. before it burned down last November. Located across the street from the main entrance to the fairgrounds, it had long operated as a warehouse for Bauder's.

The Des Moines Plan and Zoning Commission approved plans Feb. 15 for a new structure at the same address, with a familiar-sounding use.

"We can only keep about 250 pounds of ice cream at the fair. We go across the street two to three times a day," Graziano, representing the business, told the commission. "With traffic, there's no way to get ice cream to the fair from the store."

Namesake believed to have been Des Moines' only female pharmacist

The Ingersoll Avenue store came into the Graziano family in 1947 , when Robertson and Graziano's father, Charles Graziano, partnered with then-owner Caroline Bauder.

But Bauder's name already had been a part of the city since 1916, when Bauder, believed to have been Des Moines' only female pharmacist, opened a store at 17th and Crocker Streets in Sherman Hill as a “handy counter for women."

She bought the Norman drug store on Ingersoll in 1923 and renamed it, moving her business there.

Bauder began advertising the pharmacy's ice cream in the Register in the late 1930s. When Charles Graziano bought out the Bauder family in 1961, he decided to refine their frozen offerings.

“We would be in the back room figuring out what flavors we wanted, and he would say, ‘Oh, honey, that is just lush . That’s the best,’” Robertson told the Register in 2017.

After taking over from her brother and closing the pharmacy, she turned to the institution's sweeter side, renaming Bauder’s Pharmacy as Bauder’s Ice Cream.

“We are a family of pharmacists, so if I said ice cream was my best compounding, you should know how seriously I take this," said Robertson, herself a pharmacist.

6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.

Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the Amer F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told Robb Report during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.

He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located. “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told Robb Report. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting.

He called on Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects for what turned out to be a major refit in a nearly record 300 days. The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.
