Wild Water: Test driving the SAY 42 carbon fibre sensation

Futuristic features and a striking race-ready profile have the fully carbon fibre SAY 42 turning heads, but with 860 horsepower it’ll be gone before you know it…

When it comes to day boats, new models need to be exceptional to make some headway in today’s market. We’ve pretty much thought of everything; from amphibious tenders to fully electric vessels – it’s safe to say that we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to super-cool day boats and superyacht tenders.

Yet, there is something the superyacht market just can’t seem to resist; carbon fibre. Ultra-light, and of course, super fast, carbon fibre day boats are among the hottest property in the day boat world, especially when you’ve got F1 technology behind the build.

Sitting in Puerto Banus for her Marbella debut and for the launch of SAY Marbella, the latest outpost in the SAY Carbon family, the 13 metre boat in question is the SAY 42, a glimmering beacon of sharp lines, a wave-cutting bow and race-ready profile. She may be tied up beside a 50-metre superyacht in the marina, but it’s the SAY 42 that’s drawing a crowd of onlookers, having been inspired by supercar aesthetics.

Brainchild of SAY Carbon CEO, Karl Wagner, the design is intentionally futuristic with a striking red paint job and eye-catching carbon fibre accents around the vessel. The entire project oozes luxury with a futuristic edge with digital displays, hand-stitched leather seats and an immaculate teak deck. Hailing from Carbo Tech, one of the largest producers of carbon-fibre-reinforced components for the automotive industry, few people on earth could demonstrate such experience with the material, making this a particularly exciting inclusion in yachting spheres.

Wagner won the contract for the worldwide first carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) monocoque for road cars, and worked with Sebastian Vettel on his inaugural victory driving for Scuderia Toro Rosso at Monza in 2008, in a monocoque produced by Carbo Tech. At 21, he was the youngest ever to win a grand prix.

Performance is where SAY 42 comes into her own. Equipped with two certified ultra-low emission v8 engines with 860 horsepower, the SAY 42 is designed to consume up to 50 percent less fuel than your standard day boat. Weighing just 4.5 tonnes, the ultra-lightweight carbon monocoque-styled design takes off with face-melting acceleration up to 50 knots, and thanks to its stabilisers, it’s not your typical plaining experience as the SAY 42 simply glides though the waves and corners as if on rails.

Once out of Puerto Banus’ no-wake zone, there is no holding back, and with no slamming, and little pitching on a non-perfect sea state it’s an extraordinary sensation of speed. There isn’t a need to kill the power to bank either, as with the help of the vessel’s stabilisers, the SAY 42 rips around on the waves without a hitch, though you’ll want to ensure the tables are clear, as she head up at quite the angle at hard-over turns. All 12 passengers on board, are comfortably seated around the 13-metre rocket; raring for more, but it’s the enthralling sensation of acceleration that has proved the most exhilarating and we kill the speed and open up the throttle a number of times.

"They are carbon masterpieces,” says Sacha Falk, managing partner of SAY Carbon Yachts Marbella. “Pioneers of lightness that allow this incredible acceleration akin to a sports car, and they are made from the most luxurious materials and offering the highest comfort. It is modern and timeless; it really is a piece of art.” Falk, who come on board to launch the Marbella dealership, sets up the new outpost alongside his full-service property company, the FRD Group.

It was the futuristic material, the speed and the sustainability of the project that drew Falk to SAY Carbon. A keen yachtsman himself, the excitement on his face is infectious and he is visibly just as excited by its speed and performance as the rest of us, who are testing out the boat for the first time.

But, with all this performance, you may be thinking there must be a compromise on space. But as the 12 of us on board discover, this is simply not the case. Through a hatch on the helm, carbon fibre steps lead to a double cabin and a surprisingly large head – plenty of space to spend more than a day on; it’s a weekender, not merely a day boat. Up on deck a large central table comfortably sits eight, and when you aren't thundering along at 50 knots, there is plenty of space to lounge on board.

Powering up one more time for a final burn along the coast, we soon close into the no-wake zone once more, killing the speed to join the superyachts in Porto Banus. The crowd on the quay has doubled in size from when we set off, confirming that the ride must have looked as exciting from the shore as it did on board. Reluctantly stepping off, it is clear there are cameras angled at us. The SAY 42 is a true showstopper.

The SAY Carbon story certainly isn’t finished either, as Falk has already put the wheels in motion to introduce SAY Carbon Yachts to Dubai, with the first boats arriving in Dubai harbour in October 2022. They’re also elevating their offering with the SAY 52, a new 16-metre hybrid vessel that’ll be hitting the water in autumn 2023.

Despite its standing as a leader in luxury and performance in the automotive field—think Porsche and BMW—Germany isn’t known for go-fast boats, especially not the sleek, high-tech supercar-like designs from the US, Italy and the UK. But one builder is changing Germany’s reputation with a 42-foot marine hotrod that combines carbon-fiber and big horsepower to create a fast, upscale experience on the water.

“We started this new era several years ago with our Say 29, and that bar has been raised to a new level by the Say 42,” says Karl Wagner, CEO of Say Carbon Yachts in Allgäu, noting the styling similarities between the two yachts. The design came from KET in Munich, a 30-plus-year-old firm with an impressive client list that includes Maybach , Mercedes-Benz , Rolls-Royce , Audi and Bugatti . “There is a clear connection with automotive design. So much so that I’d call the 42 a supercar on the water,” adds Wagner.

The twin V8 propulsion by Volvo Penta delivers a total of 860 horsepower. The 42’s lightweight construction, “wave-cutter” bow and deep-V running surface also combine to give it a top speed of 58 mph, while consuming about 50 percent less fuel than comparable go-fast yachts.

The futuristic-looking cockpit includes a carbon-fiber mast and two carbon helm seats as well as large side-decks for easy passage.  Say Carbon

The 42 also has comfort-inducing options, like a hardtop for protection against the sun and Seakeeper stabilizers to eliminate rolling at sea. Beyond its spacious social areas up top, the boat also has a generous cabin for weekend cruising.

Say Carbon made sure to mix comfort into the design, including wide side decks for safe passage and a large sun lounge on the aft section—which can be used even when the boat is running at 46 mph. But the real differentiators on this boat are the design cues that include an exterior table for six with visible carbon fiber details, a carbon-fiber mast, and yes, two carbon-fiber helm seats positioned in front of large Garmin displays.

Weekend boaters will also appreciate the automatic anchor system which, at the push of a button, lifts out from the bow, moves forward and lowers into the water. The cabin also has gee-whiz features like a carbon-fiber electric door, a head with shower and toilet, and seating up front that makes up into a double bed. There’s also an unusually large skylight overhead for plenty of natural sunlight.

The 42’s unique design features a lightweight, “wave-cutter” hull. With twin V8 Volvo Pentas, the boat reaches a top speed of 57 mph. 

The yacht should do well for performance lovers who want a new look, but without sacrificing comforts. Hull number one of the Say 42 was delivered to a client in Ibiza in June, while the second hull is currently being built. The boat is priced at about $807,000.

Say 42 carbon runabout.

The SAY 42 (12.96m), the latest addition to the German builder’s line of high-end powerboats, like her smaller sister, the 29, has distinctive lines, with a high, narrow bow that cuts through chop.

Recently word reached us from SAY Carbon Yachts, the German builder of sleek lightweight runabouts, about the delivery of the first new SAY 42 (12.96m). Company CEO Karl Wagner—who in a previous career built Carbo Tech GmbH, which became the world’s largest supplier of carbon fiber monocoques for automotive and racing applications—contributed a design brief (see “a = F/m” in PBB No. 180), explaining the thinking and the math that went into the SAY 29, which set a world speed record for production-built electric boats . The 29 is the predecessor and inspiration for the new 42-footer, which replaces the previous model of the same length. Different from the 29, the 42 is available only with combustion-power systems and later will be offered with a hybrid drive. These are the engine choices and their respective manufacturer-rated maximum rpm and power, plus the potential top speeds (as given by SAY):

2 x MerCruiser 350 V8 MPI with Bravo 3 drive, 5,400 rpm, (700 hp/522 kW), 40 kts. 2 x Volvo Penta V8-430-CE/DPS 430 with Aquamatic drive, 6,000 rpm (860 hp/642 kW), 46 kts. 2 x Ilmor MV8 7.4l, with Ilmor One drive, 5,800 rpm (1,044 hp/779 kW), 50 kts.

Wagner, who is adamant about introducing rigorous automotive-production discipline to boatbuilding, also is a stickler for styling that departs from the usual. Calling the new boat “a sportscar on the water,” he hired Munich-based design studio KET to give the 42 the same signature high, plumb, wave-cutting bow we have seen on the 29, a wide-open stern, and a big swim platform that extends on both sides of the hull. The latter feature also “stabilizes the hull and ensures maximum steadiness while enabling incredible cornering speeds,” according to SAY’s marketing material.

The stern, which runs out to a wraparound swim platform, adds stability for fast cornering.

The hull is built from epoxy-infused T300 and T700 carbon fiber sandwich employing closed-cell foam of various thicknesses and an autoclave oven for curing smaller parts. This effort keeps the hull weight to a scant 1,460 kg (3,219 lbs) and the total dry weight, including two Volvo Penta engines and a Seakeeper 2 gyro stabilizer, to 4.5 tons (9,921 lbs)—less than half of what conventionally built boats of similar size (e.g., 420 Boston Whaler Outrage) weigh without engines. SAY also claims the 42 “consumes up to 50% less fuel than similar yachts on the market.” When pressed for specifics, the company said with the Volvo DPS engines, fuel consumption is about 40 l (10.5 gal) per hour at 20 knots.

For the electronics, SAY installs a CZone CAN bus system to interface with two Garmin MFDs to control all essential functions via touch-screen from the helm station. Other notable features are the carbon mast with instrument carrier, fully adjustable carbon seats, and push-button deployment and retrieval of the bow anchor from a storage well it shares with 30m (98 ‘ ) of stainless-steel chain. Suggested retail price (ex VAT and shipping) starts at 681,200€ ($800,000), and each boat can be custom configured online.

Amongst all the impressive vessels at the 2023 Palma Boat Show, there was one new boat that immediately caught the eye – the SAY Carbon 42. This remarkable craft, crafted by the German brand SAY Carbon, turned plenty of heads with its cutting-edge design and emphasis on maximum performance and efficiency.

SAY Carbon, as the name implies, specialises in creating boats constructed entirely from carbon fibre – a high-tech, lightweight, but expensive building material. The SAY Carbon 42, in particular, showcases a hull design that stands out from the ordinary.

Under the waterline, the hull of the SAY Carbon 42 is notably slender and narrow. However, as it rises above the water, it flares out, creating additional deck space and interior volume. Despite this, the SAY Carbon 42 is by no means a high-volume day boat. Instead, it’s a vessel that focuses on pure performance and efficiency.

The SAY Carbon 42 uses the Petestep hull design, previously seen on the X-Power 33C and the Virtue V10 , among others. Unlike conventional hulls with parallel spray rails, Petestep hulls feature fan-shaped rails that trap spray within the hull, effectively creating a cushion that improves speed and efficiency, as well as providing a smoother ride.

With a displacement of just 4.5 tonnes, the SAY Carbon 42 weighs less than half of what you’d expect for a typical 42ft open boat. This reduced weight, achieved through that carbon fibre sandwich foam construction, further enhances efficiency and speed. Despite its stiffness, the sandwich construction offers a comfortable ride and helps to dampen noise and vibrations.

Powering this vessel are petrol engines, which provide two key benefits. First, they deliver smooth, clean power with rapid acceleration. Second, they are lighter and smaller than equivalent diesel engines, resulting in fuel savings and a reduced environmental impact.

The New SAY 42 Yacht is a Supercar for the Water

The new SAY 42 yacht is a perfect vessel for those looking to fly across the water like a supercar does on the road. There are a few different engine options that can be selected when customizing this vessel. First up is a low-emission twin Volva Penta V8 setup that creates 860 horsepower and a top speed of 46 knots. Next up is a twin Mercruiser 6.2-liter V8 engine setup that produces 700 horsepower and speeds of up to 40 knots. For those who want serious speed, there’s the high-end twin Ilmor MV8 7.4-liter engine setup that creates a total of 966 horsepower for a top speed of 50 knots. Taking advantage of all of the power, no matter the engine picked, is a lightweight vessel.

However, the SAY 42 has a lot more to offer than just power. For technology, this vessel packs two Garmin independent displays, CZone CAN Bus Control System, Seakeeper 2 Gyro and more. For comfort, it’s packed with amenities that make cruising the seas a true treat. When traveling at high speeds, the racing seats feature adjustable suspension that can dampen any rough rides. These seats can also rotate 360-degrees. The SAY 42 also includes plenty of seating for guests, a bathing ladder, cockpit wetbar, rain shower, sunshade/bimini options, bountiful storage and more. Below the deck is a forward cabin with seating that turns into a bed, a table and even bathroom.
