World’s largest superyacht: Everything you need to know about 183m REV
- Superyachts
The crown of world’s largest superyacht is due to be passed on - here’s what you need to know about the newcomer 183m REV...
Azzam ’s 8-year reign as the world’s largest superyacht is nearly over – the 183.6m (602ft) goliath known as REV (short for Research Expedition Vessel) is under construction in Norway with an estimated delivery date of 2024.
Ahead of this figurative passing of the torch, we take a look at this new arrival and some of its star features…
Who is REV ’s owner?
Kjell Inge Røkke, the majority owner of Norwegian holding company Aker ASA, is the man behind REV Ocean, a non-profit organisation founded in 2017 that financed the build and will operate REV on her ocean adventures.
How much did REV cost?
As with all of the world’s largest superyachts, the exact price of REV is a closely guarded secret, but Forbes estimates that she cost around $350million (approx £253million). That’s a lot in, but it pales in comparison to the estimated $600million (approx £434million) cost of Azzam .

What was rev built for.
The idea behind REV is as simple as it is ambitious: “To make the ocean healthy again.”
The way REV Ocean plans to achieve this is by researching, campaigning and developing solutions for three key areas: plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and overfishing.
The expeditions will work towards these lofty aims by carrying up to 54 scientists and 36 crewmembers to some of the most remote areas on earth.
Who built REV ?
Norwegian yard Vard has taken care of the primary construction phase, beginning with fabrication at its Romanian yard in Tulcea before the steel giant was moved to its Brattvåg shipyard in Norway last summer for outfitting.
The final stages are due to take place at the German yard Lloyd Werft, which has superyacht pedigree, having worked on the 115m Luna . Superyacht designer Espen Øino was also heavily involved in the development.
What toys does she carry?
REV will be fully kitted out to research the ocean’s biggest problems, with two helicopters, five gantry cranes, and an array of manned and unmanned submarines capable of diving to a maximum depth of 7,500ft via the moonpool – a 7.7m x 5m opening in the centre of the hull.
Why does she need to be so big?
As well as carrying all those underwater gizmos, REV will also house six laboratories, a 36-seat lecture auditorium, a media editing suite, a conference centre and an exhibition room, not to mention enough deck space for carrying up to 12 shipping containers.
How fast is REV ?
Powered by a gargantuan 2.7MW Wärtsilä diesel-electric system, she has an estimated top speed of 17.8 knots and a cruising range of 21,120 nautical miles at 11 knots.
How can I get on board REV ?
The world’s largest superyachts are notoriously secretive and hard to get on board, but REV will be the exception to the rule. If you’re a world-class oceanographer, there’s a good chance you’ll be invited on board at some point via one of the project’s partners, which include WWF and the UN Environment Programme.
“ REV will be a platform for gathering knowledge,” explains Inge Røkke. “I would like to welcome researchers, environmental groups, and other institutions on board, to acquire new skills to evolve innovative solutions to address challenges and opportunities connected to the seas.”
For the rest of us, REV will be offered as a charter yacht for up to four months per year, either on a full-yacht or per-cabin basis. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but it’s safe to assume you’ll need deep pockets.
Update: In June 2021, the team behind REV announced on their official website that the project was facing delays of three to five years.
“Over the past year, the construction of the REV Ocean vessel has been beset by delays caused by the yard,” the statement read. “We have been hoping the situation would improve, but compounding issues are causing further setbacks. We have not received a timeline for when a compliant ship will be delivered.
“Our own best estimate suggests a three to five year delay for when the vessel can be placed in operation. This is related to technical and weight challenges, and the ship is as of today not in accordance with the specifications in the shipbuilding contract. Delivery can first take place when the ship is able to conduct the research and expedition missions which the ship is intended for.”
The statement also hints at the option to cancel the contract due to the length of the delay, an option that they have yet to take up.
REV cost an estimated $350million (£253million)
Her mission is “to make the ocean healthy again”, rev can carry up to 12 shipping containers, they can be unloaded via five gantry cranes, twin helipads allow for shoreside expeditions, she also carries several tenders and submarines, revealed: the true cost of running a $3 million superyacht, the massive 278-foot explorer victorious will be the star at this year’s miami boat show 2024, latitude: owner anil thadani on his 45m globetrotting superyacht, latest videos, galeon 440 fly sea trial: you won't believe how much they've packed in, parker sorrento yacht tour: 50-knot cruiser with a killer aft cabin, yamarin 80 dc tour: a new direction for the nordic day cruiser, is this the best compact cruiser money can buy aquador 250 ht tour.

Biden Calls for Higher Taxes on Corporations and the Wealthy
The budget, which would cut the deficit by $3 trillion over the next decade, reinforces Biden’s efforts to counter Republican tax proposals that Democrats deride as giveaways to the wealthy.

By Alan Rappeport
Reporting from Washington
- March 11, 2024
The budget that President Biden released on Monday projects to cut deficits by $3 trillion over a decade, and it does so with an approach that has become familiar: tax increases for companies and the wealthy.
The president previewed several of the proposals in his State of the Union speech last week and contrasted them with those of Republicans, who have called for extending most of the $2 trillion of tax cuts that former President Donald J. Trump signed into law in 2017. For Mr. Biden, tax policy has been at the center of his efforts to make the economy more equitable and to counter Republican tax proposals that Democrats deride as giveaways to the wealthy.
“Does anybody here think the tax code’s fair?” Mr. Biden said during remarks in New Hampshire on Monday. “I don't either.”
Biden Plan Would Raise Taxes on Corporations and the Wealthy
The proposals in president biden’s budget plan, including the tax increases, project to reduce deficits by about $3 trillion over a decade..
It’s my goal to cut the federal debt even more by making big corporations and the very wealthy begin to pay their fair share. I’m not anticorporation. I represented the state of Delaware. More corporations incorporated in Delaware than every other state in America combined. Combined. But guess what? But I’m a capitalist, man. Make all the money you want. Just begin to pay your fair share, your taxes. I had a tax code that charged them [billionaires] 25 percent. Not the highest rate — 25 percent. You know how much that would raise over the next 10 years? $400 billion. [$400] billion a year. Imagine what we could do, from cutting the deficit to providing for child care, to providing health care, to continue to provide our military with all they need. So, folks, look, this is not beyond our capacity.
Overall, Mr. Biden is proposing $5 trillion in additional taxes on corporations and high earners over the next decade. Here’s what those increases would entail:
Corporate tax increases
The budget employs a mix of approaches to make American corporations pay more in federal taxes. That includes raising the corporate tax rate to 28 percent from 21 percent, which is the level that was set by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.
Mr. Biden also calls for increasing what’s known as the corporate minimum tax to 21 percent from 15 percent. That tax, which was passed by Democrats in 2022, applies to corporations that report annual income of more than $1 billion to shareholders on their financial statements but use deductions, credits and other preferential tax treatments to reduce their effective tax rates well below the statutory 21 percent . White House economists estimate increasing the tax could yield $137 billion in new tax revenue over a decade.
The president would also quadruple a 1 percent surcharge on corporate stock buybacks. That tax passed along party lines in 2022.
Corporate and private jet use also would face higher costs under the budget, which proposes raising fuel taxes “so that corporate executives and other wealthy Americans pay their fair share for the use of airspace and other public services related to air travel.” The budget also seeks to eliminate a tax break for corporate jet purchases.
And executive pay is also targeted in the budget. The White House proposes denying corporate deductions for all compensation associated with employees who earn more than $1 million. That goes beyond current tax laws, which only denies such deductions for top executives.
The budget also assumes that a global tax agreement the United States helped broker in 2021 will be enacted, despite the fact that Republicans have refused to entertain the new levy. Under that agreement, more than 130 countries pledged to enact minimum corporate tax rates of 15 percent that firms must pay on their foreign earnings. Mr. Biden wants the U.S. rate to be increased from 10.5 percent, which is not compliant with the agreement, to 21 percent.
Higher taxes for the wealthiest
Since the 2020 presidential campaign, Mr. Biden has pledged that none of his policies would increase taxes on households that earn less than $400,000. The latest budget keeps its laser focus on the wealthiest 1 percent.
Mr. Biden wants to raise the tax rate on capital gains such as stock sales for individuals who earn more than $400,000 to 39.6 percent. He also reiterated calls to close the so-called carried interest loophole that allows wealthy hedge fund managers and private equity executives to pay lower tax rates than entry-level employees.
The budget also includes another attempt at a version of a wealth tax, a complex concept that has long been an ambition of progressives.
The proposal would impose a 25 percent “billionaire tax” on individuals with wealth, defined as the total value of their assets, of more than $100 million. The goal is to prevent the wealthiest Americans from employing tax strategies that allow them to pay lower tax rates than those of middle-class households.
One of the challenges of so-called wealth taxes is figuring out how to determine the value of certain kinds of assets such as art, yachts and other holdings. A Treasury Department document outlining the mechanics of the tax proposals, said that a lot would be left to the discretion of the Treasury Secretary, who would have the authority to approve methods for assessing the value of “non-tradeable” assets. Treasury said that taxpayers would have the opportunity to appeal valuations and have their assets appraised.
Emboldening the Internal Revenue Service
One of Mr. Biden’s biggest priorities during his first term has been revamping the Internal Revenue Service, which received an $80 billion funding boost through the Inflation Reduction Act.
Republicans have been eagerly chipping away at those funds and have already succeeded in clawing back $20 billion of that money.
The White House budget restores those clawbacks and extends the tax collection agency’s modernization money with an additional $104 billion through 2034.
The Biden administration has argued that investments in the I.R.S. enable the federal government to collect more tax revenue without raising tax rates by compelling companies and wealthy tax evaders to pay what they owe. The Treasury Department has estimated that the so-called “tax gap” of revenue that goes uncollected was nearly $700 billion in 2021.
The White House estimated that the additional I.R.S. investments would create $237 billion in net savings over a decade.
Using taxes to shore up retirement programs
Mr. Biden is also calling for new efforts to improve the solvency of Social Security and Medicare, including making wealthy Americans pay more into the programs.
In the budget, he opposes benefit cuts for the programs and any additional contributions from workers earning less than $400,000 a year. On Monday, Shalanda Young, the White House budget director, implied that Mr. Biden would look to shore up Social Security in part by targeting a cap on income subject to the payroll taxes that feed the program. She said Mr. Biden would improve its solvency “by asking high-income Americans to pay their fair share. If you make a million dollars in this country, you are done paying your Social Security taxes sometime in February.”
The budget also calls for increasing the Medicare and net investment income tax rates by 1.2 percentage points for taxpayers with more than $400,000 of earnings.
Most likely dead on arrival
Many of Mr. Biden’s proposals have appeared in similar forms in his previous budgets, and administration officials acknowledged that even when Democrats controlled the House and the Senate it was not possible to pass a wealth tax.
The budget fell flat with Republicans in Congress on Monday. Senator Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, described it as “chock-full of corner cutting to circumvent congressional spending caps” and warned that it “presents shortsighted plans to burn through Americans’ pocketbooks.”
The Trump campaign predicted, without offering an analysis, that Mr. Biden’s proposed tax increases would lead to the “immediate” loss of approximately one million jobs.

World's Largest Superyacht REV To Offer Unforgettable Charter Vacations

By Oliver Pearson 8 May 2017
Set to become the world's largest superyacht in terms of both length and gross tonnage (GT), the 182m/596ft motor yacht REV will be available for private charter vacations following her scheduled delivery from the Vard shipyard in 2020.
An expedition yacht sure to take the world by storm, REV has become all the more exciting after it was announced that she will be available for private yacht charter vacations .
Providing unrestricted access to the world’s most remote and undiscovered waters, the superyacht opens up an entirely new world of possibilities thanks to her collection of pioneering features and additional tenders.
Indeed, everything from her remarkable engineering to her submarine and two helipads allows REV to transport guests to unforgettable destinations which are beyond the reach of most superyachts.
Joining a truly elite league of vessels, REV has the capability to conduct vital scientific research in much the same way as those owned by philanthropist Paul Allen- the 126m/414ft motor yacht OCTOPUS , for example, has famously spent time investigating previously unreachable areas of the ocean floor.
When she isn’t being used for such environmental purposes, REV also provides a remarkable environment for charter guests to cruise in outstanding comfort and luxury.
Not only impressive in terms of her length overall (LOA), superyacht REV has an enormous gross tonnage (GT) of 16000(GT). What this means is that her interior is highly voluminous and provides exceptional comfort for guests both when underway and at-anchor.
At 182m LOA, REV is a metre larger than world’s current largest superyacht- the 181m/593ft motor yacht AZZAM - and almost 20m larger than the second largest yacht- the 164m/538ft luxury yacht ‘Fulk Al Salamah’ .
Bearing similarities to the 107m/352ft motor yacht ULYSSES , REV has also had her exterior styled by the legendary Norwegian designer Espen Oeino. Distinctly masculine, her strong lines create a memorable profile which makes her a stylish as well as a capable superyacht.
All of her engineering is totally eco-friendly, allowing charter guests to enjoy an enhanced performance whilst being kinder than ever to the environment.
As if sent by the future, REV is a revolution in both the design and possibilities of the superyacht charter experience
Whilst no images currently exist of her interior design, it has been confirmed that REV features a number of spaces for guests using the superyacht for either research or vacation purposes. For charter guests keen to explore and document far-flung destinations, for example, there is a dedicated video editing suite as well as a 40 seat auditorium to view the films in.
For those more inclined to unwind and take it easy around smoother waters, there is always the option to simply enjoy her facilities and tenders with friends and family. With a total of 18 cabins, REV is capable of accommodating up to 36 guests.
Ultimately, REV will be perfect for those charter guests looking to enjoy a unique vacation which combines adventure with luxury comfort on the water.
