TANZER 10.5 SAILBOAT FOR SALE BY OWNER

$49,700 obo

Located in Bayfield, WI

ABOUT THE SAILBOAT

'Manannan' has been our faithful companion for the past 38 years. There were only 37 Tanzer 10.5's built. Built in 1983, this sailboat has had many voyages and remains in great condition. A sister ship, also built in 1983, was sailed to Australia and back. Then, after 20 years of hard use, a survey showed a boat in excellent structural condition.

Aside from its bluewater capability it has some very nice features. All the tanks are under the floor in the center of the boat and easily accessible. The retractable keel, inside steering, self-tending jib, queen size aft berth, ability to lower the mast, and feeling of light and spaciousness inside are all pluses when on a long cruise. She sails stiffly, heeling less than you'd think, and handles weather and strong winds well. There is great storage all over the boat. It feels much larger than 34.5 feet and definitely has livability.

We are asking $49,700 (or best offer)for both the Tanzer and it's companion sailing dinghy.

Please use the contact form for any questions or offers.

Pilothouse in the PNW

My wife and I have been been sailing a trailerable boat in the Vancouver area for a couple of years, mainly on Harrison Lake and Indian Arm. We plan to move up to something bigger in a few years when we have the time for longer cruises. Our experience so far has biased us in favour of pilothouses because, outside of a few months in the summer, we've found that we're out in rain quite a bit and also motoring more than I thought we would. There are some quite nice pilothouses around in our size and price range--Gulf 29, Saturna/Truant 33, Cooper 353, Tanzer 10.5. But it seems clear that, dollar for dollar, you get more boat with a "conventional" layout. You can nearly get two decent C&C 33s for the cost of a Truant 33. And I notice that even here, where pilothouses make more sense than probably anywhere else in North America, they're still relatively uncommon. So would I regret a pilothouse? If I can get a newer "conventional" layout with a canvas enclosed cockpit will I be happier in the long run?

Kings Gambit

Kings Gambit

From a few summer charters, or with local friends, I’ve noticed that powerboats dominate the “distant” locales. Realizing that you will be in rainy weather and motoring much of the time, the choice between a space-challenged pilothouse sailboat and a trawler of the same length, or nearly so, goes to the trawler or some other model with similar accommodations. I think the cockpit enclosure “splits” the difference, so to speak. But the folks we’ve met in BC traveling in pilothouse sloops, a total of two, have said they love ‘em.

Mark Maulden

Mark Maulden

My opinion and take it for what it’s worth...A pilot house with inside steering is nice for the PNW during inclement weather..However, you can’t sail from inside. At least very effectively..From the cockpit, looking fwd in good weather, you have to look over the house. Deck access could be difficult. A lot of sailors like them as when down below, you are still looking outside instead of being inside a hull. With a “conventional” layout, you can install a dodger such that you can get out of weather and breaking water under power. I can stand in the companionway and drive the boat under autopilot with a remote. I could also enclose the cockpit if I want. When things are “favorable”, fouly up and get wet and sail! And a pilot house has more windage...It all comes down to what kind of sailing you want to do..

Sail year around here and have a conventional sloop with dodger and bimini. No interest in a pilot house, have had the full cockpit enclosure and disliked it for a variety of reasons. Much prefer the dodger and bimini in all kinds of weather. Layering always helps when the temps dip low. Furnace keeps the interior cozy while on the hook.

In the PNW I have had both dodger/ bimini combo and the full enclosure. I find the full enclosure very flexible. Can zip on zipoff panels as required. A little buddy propane heater in the full enclosure really takes the chill off even in the worst of weather. The admiral appreciates it very much. Happy wife...

I can't say that's the typical image that comes to mind when I think about sailing adventures, but it's sailing and good friends. Looks like a blast. -Will (Dragonfly)

We can open a spot to crew @Will Gilmore .

Some day when I install a USB port in my head, I'll be able to download several images and clips of my snowy, stormy, winter cruises. Perhaps when I'm out this winter, I'll capture some with my camera. Just say'n.

Tedd. Not sure what you are considering in comparison. Sailing speed? The general tool is to compare PHRF RATINGS. CC33 = 135 Catalina 34 = 138 Tanzer 10.5 = 168 These indicate all things being equal the CC33 should get to the moorage ahead of the other two boats. Draft? Getting in to shallow coves or crossing over shallow bars to passages. The Tanzer being a heavier Boat carries a deeper keel (fixed keel) than the other two. But all this is just statistical talk. You have to like the feel of the boat. It needs to be able to do what you want to do. It needs to give you that “Ahhhhhh” moment as you approach the marina and catch that first glimpse of her waiting to take you out on the water. If the boat doesn’t do that to your heart all the stats are of little comfort.

Love my Tanzer...that is all

This summer as part of a life change my wife and I took up sailing. After over a decade of working a dangerous high stress high fatigue job I needed an escape that was "intense" but also "disconnected from the world and as relaxing as you want to make it". Sailing seemed like a good idea. I already possessed the major skills needed from my career (map\compass\gps navigation, deep understanding of weather, emergency management, survival skills for the "outdoors", etc). All I had to do was learn "how to sail a boat" lol. Anyways, we bought a Tanzer 7.5 and fu$#ing love the thing. She's been a solid ship on Lake Huron. Even under my "new guy" hands it's been a patient boat and has CONFIDENTLY sailed with me through some bouts of heavy weather on open BIG water Huron. It's brought a level of adventure, freedom, and relaxation to our lives I would have never dreamed possible. I could go on all day. Just sayin' I love my Tanzer. That is all. :sailing-pilgrims:

Here's my last boat; a Tanzer 10.5 pilothouse. A great sailor and very comfortable. Also, not the ugliest girl at the dance...... http://www.sailnet.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=61833&thumb=1 goat

Y're damn straight. The Tanzer 7.5's appearance is... distinctive. But forgiving, respectably nimble, and fun. The first boat I ever sailed was in high school when my father bought a used Tanzer 7.5 at the southern end of Lake Huron's Georgian Bay. For the next 4-5 weekends we'd sail it a little closer to the North Channel. From there I sailed the hell out of that boat, my father even more. Do you love Georgian Bay and North Channel too? Describing them as spectacular is an understatement.

We still have our well used T22 K/CB and trailer we bought new in 1981. While we were working it traveled on our vacations everywhere from north of Baltimore to St Augustine and the length of the Tennessee River from Knoxville to Paducah. It now lives on Watauga Lake in the mountains of East Tennessee. Bill

Seller's Description

Standard features

ANCHOR WINDLASS HOOD MAINSAIL STOWAY MAST BOOM VETUS BOW THRUSTER PROFURL HEADSAIL SYSTEM ELECTRIC HYDR LIFTING KEEL SYSTEM MAST TUBERNACLE WITH LOWERING EQUIPMENT SELF TACKING JIB SHEET SYSTEM GARMIN CHART PLOTTER RAYMARIN AUTO PILOT 50 AMP CHARGER 1000 WATT INVERTER The Tanzer 10.5 was designed with a number of very interesting and innovative features. It has a retractable ballasted lead keel. Unlike many boats with a swing keel arrangement, the Tanzer 10.5s keel fills-in the entire keel house opening when it is in its lowered position. The keel is raised hydraulically, with a push of a button, and the housing is located in the pilot house. This means its performance should come very close to that of a fixed keel. Although the Tanzer 10.5 looks very much like a sleek sailboat, it actually has a pilot house. The boat displacement is 13,000 lbs, with the keel being 5,700 lbs. The pilot house is accessed from the cockpit down a short ladder. The pilot house has wrap-around windows and a helm position to starboard with a chart table work bench. Aft of pilot house is the head with a shower. Next to that is the galley, with a 3-burner propane stove, oven and microwave. There is also a combined 9 cubic foot freezer and refrigerator. The main cabin is two steps down from the pilot house. And features a dinette with comfortable seating for 6 people. The table can be converted to a double berth. In the bow is two twin bunks with large storage under the bed. It has 6 deck hatches and 2 opening ports for ventilation. This sailboat is also unique as it has a center cockpit with an aft cabin, which is connected to the galley with a small passage hallway. This hallway has 3 maple cabinets for storage.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The TANZER 10.5 featured a pilothouse with inside steering and was offered in fixed, and lifting keel versions. Draft for fixed keel version: 5.92’ Based on the earlier TANZER 10. Dimensions from builders brochure.
