2024 IRC European Championships | Hosted by the Royal Irish YC

irish yacht

Three major sailing championships will be hosted by the Royal Irish Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire in Autumn 2024 in what will be a three week jamboree of keelboat racing, culminating in the IRC European Championship.

First up is the ICRA National Championships, which will see yachts across all classes competing on exciting Dublin Bay courses and with plentiful shoreside entertainment. The ICRA National Championships will run from Friday, 30th August to Sunday, 1st September. The timing of this event may put some of the Dun Laoghaire fleet at a dis-advantage if they are not careful to maintain crew discipline on ICRA’s Eve – typically, the last Thursday night race of the Dublin Bay Sailing Club season can be a rowdy affair!

Crews of J boats will barely have time to hose down their boats and fold away their racing sails before the Key Yachting J Cup Ireland kicks off with preliminaries in the Royal Irish yacht Club on Friday 6th September 2024. First run in the RIYC in 2023, this very successful event returns with back-to-back racing on the weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September 2024. We expect large entries from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland given the opportunity to race in the ICRA’s and/or the IRC Europeans the week before and the week after.

irish yacht

Crowning off the three weeks of competition will be the IRC European Championship which runs from 12th – 15th September 2024. Run in conjunction with the Royal Ocean Racing Club, this will bring the cream of Grand Prix cruisers racers to Dun Laoghaire and will prove to be a spectacular event for both participants and spectators. In a special partnership with RORC, RIYC are preparing a format which will be inclusive for Club, Regatta and Professional sailors alike while Dublin is only 20 minutes away by metro and full of sights and experiences for fellow travellers.

Running the events on consecutive weeks allows visiting boats to come and enjoy their pick of top level racing and also enjoy some downtime with their friends and families exploring the hinterland of the area. The Preliminary Notice of Race will be issued in the next few weeks.

“We are delighted to be hosting this unique jamboree of sailing in the Royal Irish Yacht Club next year. Our club’s excellent facilities, under the stewardship of our sailing manager Mark McGibney are gearing up to welcome all the sailors and guests. This is a great opportunity for Dun Laoghaire to show the World what a fantastic location it is for yacht racing. There are many attractions for the visiting crews their family and friends to enjoy “ said Jerry Dowling – Commodore of the Royal Irish Yacht Club.

WATCH: Irish "ghost ship" found drifting off coast of Bermuda

The irish 'ghost ship' - which came from the royal irish yacht club - was discovered off the coast of bermuda by matt rutherford and his colleagues from the ocean research project..

Matt Rutherford on board the Irish yacht the Wolfhound in 2013.

A sailor has shared footage of his discovery of an eerie Irish ghost ship drifting 800 miles off the coast of Bermuda.

Matt Rutherford and his colleague from the Ocean Research Project found the abandoned yacht "somewhere in the Atlantic"  in 2013, but they only recently shared footage of the amazing discovery on YouTube.

"This is one awfully abandoned sailboat - Wolfhound from the Irish Yacht Club," Rutherford said in the video.

  • African “ghost ship” washes ashore in Co Cork during Storm Dennis

Rutherford and his colleague noticed that the yacht's sail was not up and noted that the ship was "behaving strangely".

"I have no idea what's inside, I'm going to go and search around and I hope I don't find any dead bodies or anything," Rutherford said in the footage of his discovery of the boat.

The pair thankfully didn't find any dead bodies but found clothes and personal items strewn all over the yacht's cabin.

"This is absolutely crazy by the way. Here I am, 800 miles from Bermuda, 1,500 miles from the US, standing on a very nice Swan 48, in the middle of the ocean."

Rutherford and his team towed the Irish ghost ship, despite it being 48 feet while his crew's boat was only 42 feet.

"We're doing our best to try to get her to Bermuda," Rutherford said. However, after fuel and engine problems, the Wolfhound was cut loose.

The yacht was skippered by Irish sailor Alan McGettigan, who made headlines in February 2013 when he and his crew were rescued about 70 miles north of Bermuda after departing Connecticut bound for Bermuda.

According to the Irish Times, "McGettigan, Declan Hayes, and Morgan Crowe all from the Royal Irish Yacht Club (RIYC), and Tom Mulligan from the neighbouring National Yacht Club (NYC) in Dún Laoghaire, were rescued by a cargo ship when their 48-foot yacht Wolfhound suffered two knockdowns and McGettigan activated an emergency beacon pinpointing their position."

Divers arrested as police smash international drug smuggling ring in Ireland

S everal divers have been arrested in Ireland for alleged drug smuggling, with police now hunting for cocaine shipments they believe have been hidden underwater.

The men include six Spaniards, two Dutchmen, one Serbian and one man from Northern Ireland.

Ireland is used as a route by South American cartels, working with Irish gangs, to move drugs into the UK and Europe .

Senior gardai believe they have thwarted a major smuggling pipeline in West Cork and retrieved a rigid inflatable boat from the back of the seized articulated lorry.

Officers believe caches of cocaine were stashed underwater off the south-west coast of Ireland until the gang thought it was safe to bring them into land.

The waterproofed consignments are electronically tagged so they can be found and retrieved by divers in smaller, safer quantities than one large shipment of narcotics.

No drugs have yet been found.

Police hope that several seized mobile phones will reveal details of plans to pick up a consignment of cocaine worth tens of millions.

Detectives believe the cocaine is most likely originally sourced from Colombia or Venezuela.

The Irish coast guard and navy are now working with police to examine boat movements off the coast over the last week.

Irish, Spanish, Dutch and UK nationals were among those arrested in the swoop on Thursday morning, which was triggered by a report of suspicious activity near Tragumna.

Four people were arrested after a foreign-registered camper van was stopped on the outskirts of Leap village at the start of searches carried out nationwide.

Six other men were arrested at other locations, including experienced divers based in Spain. Three were stopped in a 4x4.

Another man had raised suspicions after leaving Tragumna in an articulated lorry.

“We never see articulated lorries in Tragumna – the road into the village is very narrow and there is no reason for an artic to come down there,” one local told The Irish Times.

Months of careful planning

Key individuals were under surveillance for some time amid suspicions of drug smuggling, the Irish Independent reported.

A source told the newspaper the operation was entirely intelligence-led and was the culmination of months of undercover work by anti-drug units.

“During the course of the operation 10 males – ages ranging from mid-20s to mid-50s – were arrested,” a garda spokesperson said.

“All 10 continue to be detained at a garda station in Co Cork under organised crime legislation.”

Police said they would be making no further comment at this time.

Last September, Irish commandos boarded a cartel “mother ship” carrying £136 million of cocaine in Ireland’s biggest ever drugs bust. Police believed it was delivering drugs to smaller boats at sea.

Judge extends period of detention of 10 members of suspected drug trafficking gang

Arrested men had been in co cork for weeks planning marine mission, gardaí believe.

irish yacht

The scene at Tragumna, Co Cork, where gardaí found a rigid inflatable boat inside the trailer of a lorry that they believe drug traffickers had used to try to reach a ship offshore.

Gardaí investigating the activities of a suspected international drug trafficking gang in Co Cork are liaising with police forces in a number of other countries including Dubai, the Netherlands, Spain and Serbia as well as the PSNI, a court has heard.

Chief Supt Vincent O’Sullivan of Cork County Garda Division told a special sitting of Bandon District Court that the investigation into the activities of the suspected organised criminal group was “a fast moving dynamic investigation with multiple international lines of inquiry”.

Chief Supt O’Sullivan was speaking as he applied to Judge James McNulty for a 72-hour extension to the detention of 10 men arrested in west Cork on Thursday morning. They include six Spaniards, two Dutch men and one Serbian, alongside a man from Co Fermanagh.

He told the court the Garda needed the extension as the investigation was complicated and in addition to carrying out inquiries with foreign police forces through both Interpol and Europol, gardaí had gathered a huge amount of evidence that needed to be examined before it was put to the suspects at interview.

This included the seizure and examination of 43 separate electronic devices including mobile phones, laptops and a satellite phone which gardaí believed were integral to the activities of the men.

It also included 120 hours of CCTV which gardaí had harvested from various locations in west Cork and elsewhere. Chief Supt O’Sullivan said gardaí were continuing to harvest CCTV footage which needed to be examined before it could be put to the suspects at interview.

He said investigators were satisfied that the men constituted an Organised Criminal Group as it was his belief that considerable financial resources were required to book flights into Ireland, accommodation in Ireland and hire vehicles as part of their plan to import a large quantity of drugs into the State.

Judge McNulty heard the 10 extension applications under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 separately after Garda Inspector John O’Connell said that gardaí were seeking to have each application heard with just the relevant suspect present for operational reasons.

Judge McNulty granted the 72 hour extension in the case of all 10 men and they were removed from Bandon Courthouse amid tight security to allow gardaí resume their interviews with them at Bantry, Bandon and Mallow Garda Stations in Cork county and Togher and the Bridewell Garda stations in Cork city.

Gardaí believe members of the alleged gang moved to Co Cork week ago to prepare for the collection of a large consignment of cocaine worth tens of millions of euros off the south west coast.

The men were arrested when gardaí stopped a camper van in Leap village and later a 4X4 and an articulated lorry at Tragumna near Skibbereen at around 7.30am on Thursday.

Investigators have established that one or two of the men arrived in Dublin two weeks ago but the remainder only flew into Dublin Airport a week ago before arriving in Co Cork, where they stayed in a combination of hotels, guesthouses and the camper van.

Gardaí have established that the UK-registered camper van was hired in Northern Ireland by one of the alleged gang members, who collected at least five other men before driving to the Skibbereen area where the whole group met up for the first time.

Gardaí have begun checking with ferry operators to try and find out when an articulated trailer containing a large Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) arrived in the country. It is believed the trailer was loaded on a Stena Line ferry in Fishguard and collected by a driver with a tractor unit in Rosslare.

The trailer with the RIB was then brought to Tragumna where it was found by gardaí. The driver of the truck, a man from Enniskillen in Co Fermanagh, was arrested.

Gardaí also recovered four diving suits in one of the vehicles.

Garda sources said investigators are keeping an open mind on how many times the gang may have put to sea from the slip at Tragumna village in the RIB, which was fitted with three powerful outboard engines.

“We believe the men we arrested were a landing party who came to West Cork to land a large consignment of drugs, but we are keeping an open mind on whether they were to rendezvous with a mother ship to collect the drugs or whether they were to collect the drugs from some marker buoy offshore,” a source said.

“And we are also keeping an open mind on how many times the gang had put to sea in the RIB - they certainly had put to sea on Thursday morning because the men were still wet when we arrested, but whether they had put to sea in the RIB in the preceding days is something we are still investigating.”

Gardaí have not ruled out the possibility that the men may have been trying to collect drugs after they were dropped off by the mother ship some distance from shore and marked with a buoy whose GPS coordinates were then transmitted to the gang.

A marine source said technology has improved hugely in recent years and it is now possible to buy a marker buoy that can be submerged to a depth of 50 metres and be programmed to come to the surface after a week or two when it can be located by those looking for it.

“Often fishermen shooting pots will mark their pots with a buoy and the buoy will be marked with the name of the boat so an unmarked buoy with no name on it would certainly attract attention from fishermen who might haul it to see what it’s marking so that’s a risk for any drug smuggling outfit,” the source said.

“But with the new electronically programmable buoys, they can be submerged for a week or two and either programmed to come up at a certain time or they can be activated by the drugs gang when they approach the locations so there’s less risk of these buoys being discovered by any passing trawler.”

In recent years, drug smuggling gangs transporting cocaine from Colombia to Europe have begun dropping off watertight bales of drugs attached to marker buoys and then sending on GPS co-ordinates to gang members who travel out from land in rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) and small boats to collect the drugs.

This method reduces the risk of being caught when land-based members of the gang head to sea to rendezvous with the mother ship as the ship can often arouse the suspicions of other mariners if it is seen loitering or waiting in an area.

Last July, two bales of cocaine with an estimated street value of €2 million were found washed up on beaches in Donegal and some weeks earlier two smaller packages worth a total of €180,000 were washed up on beaches in Cork which gardaí believe came from such drop off deliveries at sea.

Man in a green suit and hat with a pint of Guinness

It’s time to deck yourself out in green and crack open a Guinness or two – it’s St Patrick’s Day 2024!

St Patrick’s Day honours the patron saint of Ireland, St Patrick, who was instrumental in transitioning Ireland away from Paganism towards Christianity.

Typically, the occasion is celebrated in countries all around the globe, with a range of parades, parties and music festivals .

So while you’re kissing your blarney stone or looking for a four-leaf clover, here’s a round-up of jokes, puns and more to help celebrate the day.

Funniest St Patrick’s Day Jokes

The Irish are renowned for their witty storytelling and jokes, often involving characters called Paddy. Here, we’ve got some of our favourite jokes for St Patrick’s Day:

What does a leprechaun keep outside his house? His Paddy-o furniture.

St. Paddy's Day hat hung on a fence

Billy stops Paddy in Dublin and asks for the quickest way to Cork. Paddy says: ‘Are you on foot or in the car?’ Billy replies: ‘In the car.’ ‘Yeah, that’s the quickest way,’ says Paddy.

Liam had left Dublin to go up to Belfast for a bit of skydiving. Late Sunday evening he was found in a tree by a farmer. ‘What happened?’ said the farmer. Liam explained that his parachute failed to open. ‘Well,’ said the farmer ‘If you had asked the locals before you jumped, they would have told you nothing opens around here on a Sunday.’

The barman says to Paddy ‘Your glass is empty, fancy another one?’ Looking around puzzled, Paddy says ‘Why would I be needing two empty glasses?’

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More

The luxurious atmosphere of this place, the view and the location make it quite outstanding. We had dinner here with friends and the dishes were amazing, accompanied by a chilled bottle of Chablis, it really made me feel as if it was a part of... the classic Russian movie. More
