Lake Allatoona

Sailing on lake allatoona.

Plenty of lakefaring men and women love sailing on Lake Allatoona.  A few are also seafaring!

If you are a sailor and you’ve been on land too long, your heart will drive you to sing, “ Sailing, sailing over the bounding main! ”  If you’re not a sailor, having solid soil beneath your feet suits you just fine … and you probably wonder what the heck “over the bounding main” means.  If your captain has been in the grog and a plank is dangling off the deck, it’s better not to ask until you come back to shore.

If you do have questions about sailing on Lake Allatoona, here are some links that will lead you to clear sailing and safe harbors.

Atlanta Yacht Club

Atlanta Yacht Club on Lake Allatoona has been home to small-boat pleasure and racing sailors for over sixty years.   Membership in Atlanta Yacht Club is available to all persons with a sailboat or an interest in sailing although a preference is given to those interested in racing.  A prospective member must be sponsored and co-sponsored by two Club members, then interviewed by our membership committee and approved by the general membership.

South Winds Sailing Club

The home port of South Winds Sailing Club (SWSC) is at beautiful Lake Allatoona’s Harbor Town Marina (34°07’46N , 84°38’16W).  There are many marine services are available for you and your sailboats, including fuel docks, a bathhouse with showers, and sailboat slips of assorted widths and lengths to accommodate most sailboats.

Since 1981, SWSC has promoted nautical activities, sailing races, and good fellowship among its members and guests.  From raft ups, potlucks, special events, to handicap sailboat racing, SWSC is about enjoying the beauty of the lake, a little competition, family, friends, fun, and new adventures.

We welcome visitors at our various events.  You can even bring your boat and try a race or two.  We only ask that if you enjoy what we do, please become a member and support the club.

ACWORTH, GA -- Racing gets underway Friday at US Sailing’s Championship of Champions, hosted by the Atlanta Yacht Club in Acworth. The sailing regatta invites National, North American, and World Champions to compete against each other over three days of racing on Lake Allatoona. This year’s fleet consists of 17 teams from all over the country, including Georgia.

A US Sailing National Championship event, the Championship of Champions pits world, North American or national class champions from a wide array of one-design classes in a boat that is unknown to many and typically on a body of water with challenging, and sometimes bewildering conditions. It’s a formula intended to upset the status quo, and often does.

In total, this year’s fleet features 11 national champions, three North American champions and one world champion. Besides Ingham there are two other past champions: Bill Draheim (Royse City, Texas), who won in 2002, and Brian Keane (Weston, Mass.), the 2013 champion.

Find out what's happening in Kennesaw with free, real-time updates from Patch.

The Atlanta Yacht Club founded Y-Flyer Fleet #1 in 1952 and is well represented in the fleet with five sailors: Bryce Dryden (Kennesaw, Ga.), the 2018 Y-Flyer National Champion, Tarasa Davis (Atlanta, Ga.), the 2018 Snipe Women’s National Champion, and Lucy Spearman (Atlanta, Ga.), the 2018 Y-Flyer Junior National Champion, are all skippers.

Crews include Shelby Hatcher (Woodstock, Ga.), a multiple winner of the Y-Flyer Junior and Women’s National championships who’ll race with Davis, and Sammy Hodges (Musella, Ga.), crew for Spearman. Hodges is the 28-year-old great grandson of E.O. “Smitty” Smithfield, a founding member of Atlanta Yacht Club and Y-Flyer Fleet #1.

Racing will be held on Lake Allatoona, an 18-square-mile lake created and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The regatta concludes Sunday, Oct. 21.

Euclid Avenue Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

We had tickets for the "Variety Playhouse" later that evening (pretty much across the street) and thought we were early (5:30pm) when we walked into the Yacht Club for a drink and a bite to eat. We were mistaken. Luckily nobody sat at the reading... table upfront, near the window, so we, the 4 of us, took over one end of the table. Soon we were joined by a handful of locals trying to finish the days crossword in the newspaper. Was this ever a funny bunch. In the mean time an endless line of interesting characters past by on the other side of the window. Anyway, what I am trying to say is that this tavern is awfully cozy and right smack in the center of "little five points". It's very cozy, staff is wonderfully friendly and helpful in deterring drink and food. I had the Philly cheese and my wife the brisket. Both were excellent. By the time we left it was standing room only. We love this place!!!!!!!! More

The staff at this bar is top notch A+. From the management to the barback, everyone is so accommodating and friendly. Best bar in L5P by far.

Very good pub with a good selection of national beer!nice place, nice people and very good food choise!personaly i love the BBQ burrito associate to a iced stagional Pumpinkg beer!for sure i'll cooming back

Nice beer selection, friendly patrons, and a cool place to beat the Atlanta heat with a cold drink in hand. Half of the place is non-smoking, but no doors to separate the halves. Check it out if you are in the little 5 points area.... Note: Since Atlanta is not near any body of water that supports Yachts, it is not really a club per say. Just a funky name. More

A great selection of people in a compact and memorabilia filled bar that serves an interesting variety of beers and has a small and specialised selection of freshly made food . Full of eccentricity (in the nicest possible way). It looks very popular with five... point locals. Staff are friendly, nothing is too much trouble and you won't go thirsty! Its well worth the visit to five points to enjoy this gem in the evenings... More

Great spot in the heart of Little Five Points. Some people bring children in but I would not recommend it. One side can get pretty smoky. Beer prices are very reasonable and the food is actually really good. Get the tater tots! Perfect spot for... people watching...there's a large window often open to the street on nice days. And always something to see in L5P. Around the holidays, don't miss the gingerbread house contest - hilarious. More

Great people watching. Relaxed, friendly environment. Service was great. Had a few beers and some sliders before a show. Food was great and came out quickly. Highly recommend.

Surprising find during an impromptu visit to Little Five Points for a late Sunday lunch with our adult son. The brisket was tender and the Mac and cheese thick and creamy. Our son had the Mac Daddy burger, topped with Mac and cheese. Good selection... of beers on tap in a funky setting. Very reasonably priced. Recommended! More

You have to try the BBQ egg rolls, they are awesome. The staff was super friendly and atmosphere is great. It is in an interesting neighborhood. Make sure you pay for your parking at the meter.

Laid back and cozy, this is my favorite bar in Atlanta. Tucked into Little Five Points, this is clearly a locals haunt and hints at the many amazing times it has seen. A place to go grab some drinks and actual good unpretentious food, the... staff rocks. We enjoyed the food (quesadillas and Philly), the tots are supreme and the service was outstanding. A must go. If you drink with your pinky hoisted in the air or appreciate sterile spots with no character, steer clear - this is not for you. Otherwise, have a great time. More

Was getting the Atlanta tour from a local and guided to this place twice in one weekend. I can see why. The funky nautical vibe is not your average bar. It's way more pub than dive but never the less it's a cool scene for... drinks and heard the food is on the mark as well. My first hand experience was with a comfortable atmosphere, cold beers and lively conversation. This place rocks. Drinks are fairly priced, too. More

I love this place. Service, food, people watching at window seat. Amazing. Thanks again for a great meal and environment. Highly recommend!

I was visiting from out of town so I asked someone where the locals go and they recommended this place. The food was reasonably priced and the drinks were definitely not weak! The canned beer prices were pretty cheap for the tall boys. The atmosphere... was great as well. More

I met up with some Atlanta friends to see Patti Smith at the Variety Theater. Immediately after the show, a ton of people from the theater headed straight to the Yacht Club for late night drinks and food. Most of the people in the place... were locals, and it was hipster-funky crowd. The bar is not too big, but its not too small, either. There are large and small tables, a few bar height tables, and a dark, boozy, dive bar feel to it. It was like a college bar from the 1980's, with lots of different beers on tap. I had the veggie quesadilla, which was delicious, One of my friends ordered the sweet potato tater tots, and all she got was a plastic basket of less then 20 tots. Her food cost almost as much as mine, but I received 10x the amount of food, so order carefully. More

I was staying one night in the area (Poncey-Highland) and was overwhelmed by the restaurant choices along Ponce De Leon, N. Highland Ave and, of course, throughout LFP. It was a though decision but after some wandering about I decided this was the place for... dinner. What a great decision! The ambiance and decor was from another era; staff and regulars were laid back and the place appeared to be frozen in time--maybe the late 1960s or early 1970s. The sidewalk chalk board listing daily specials caught my eye; how could I go wrong with a dish called a Cincinnati Three Way? Best plate of pasta ever--down to the kitchy oyster cracker garnish! Incredibly helpful & chatty waitress recommended a local dark ale which was perfect! Learned a lot about the 'hood and my hotel; also picked up a great lodging tip for my next trip here. More

New Cape Coral Yacht Club designs: Most on council like a coastal, Key West vibe

the atlanta yacht club

Given three different design options for the new Yacht Club Community Center , most of the Cape Coral City Council is leaning toward a coastal, Key West-flavor architecture.

At a committee of the whole meeting on Wednesday, the city sought direction from the council on a design direction for the outside of the community building.

"It's a concept, just like we do with anything else, and as we are designing, things may come up that we want to shift and be nimble (on)," said Cape Coral City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn.

James Pankonin with Kimley Horn, a consulting firm focusing on public and private developments, presented the information about the look of the community building.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Community Park, which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has been a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s but is set to undergo major renovations after Hurricane Ian delayed the original plans .

The current plans include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

The city is also preparing for the demolition of the Yacht Club and its facilities in April as it awaits permits.

No estimates could be provided for the price of the new building.

"It will really come into how much of certain materials are needed and construction methods," Ilczyszyn said.

The city will have that information once they have 30% of the construction design.

Two public meetings for the designs are planned for April 2 and May 7.

After getting public input, the city will vote to amend its contract with Kimley Horn to approve all these changes.

The plan is to have these changes approved or introduced before the summer hiatus.

New Designs for the Yacht Club building

John Bryant with Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, a Sarasota-based design firm, said the goal with the new designs was to maintain the experience of the original Yacht Club.

The majority of the council preferred option one.

Design one:

Bryant described the first option as "coastal vernacular" and similar to the park buildings at Lake Kennedy and Yellow Fever Creek.

"So it's sort of informed by the current architectural work in 2024," Bryant said. "Kinda Key West."

Councilmember Dan Sheppard and Mayor John Gunter preferred option one.

Gunter said the design was the most pleasing for him.

Councilmember Keith Long liked option one and said he liked the Key West aesthetic.

Councilmember Tom Hayden liked option one.

Design two:

Option two is more informed by the current Yacht Club and would have a stone base and mid-century feel to it, according to Bryant.

"There's certainly opportunity to kind of further develop this option to have even more of the existing Yacht Club feel, but a different vibe, feel than option one," Bryant said.

He also said option two might be more expressive the closer they try to recreate the aesthetic of the old ballroom building.

Councilmember Jessica Cosden liked design two as it incorporated design elements of the old building though she lamented how similar it looked to the first design.

"I wish we could have done more, but I know it's hard with a two-story building, to make it look the same as a very unique one-story building.

Councilmember Bill Steinke said two would be his choice as well, but was wary of additional maintenance of natural wood products used in the design.

"As long as we can bring that aesthetic and keep the maintenance down, number two would be my choice," Steinke said.

Councilmember Robert Welsh said he could go either way, but he liked the look of two.

Design three:

This would be more contemporary and modern.

"Even with a more contemporary language, you can still have warmth, incorporating some wood elements and stone elements," Bryant said.

None of the council members expressed any favorability for the third design.

Inside the new community center

The Community Center will have an additional 10,000 square feet for a total of 47,000 square feet, a history room to remember the first ballroom building on the first floor, and more rooms for civic and community use on the first floor.

Additionally, the new ballroom has shifted slightly as the balcony area on the second floor has been expanded to wrap around the top of the building.

The Club at ATL to expand at Hartsfield-Jackson

Travelers relax between flights at the Club At Atl airport Lounge Tuesday, Feb. 21. (Steve Schaefer/steve.schaefer@ajc.com)

The Club ATL, an airport lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson, is preparing to expand in an attempt to address long wait times for entry.

The club on Concourse F is a common-use lounge open to passengers of any airline who pay $50 to enter or have access through Priority Pass, a benefit with some credit cards that otherwise costs $99 to $469 annually. The Club ATL opened in 2013 , after the opening of the airport’s International Terminal and Concourse F in 2012.

It’s not unusual for travelers to wait an hour or more to get in during busy periods.

The Club ATL has capacity for 130 people and “has experienced capacity challenges over the past several years due to the growing number of travelers seeking lounge spaces as an alternative” to waiting at the gate, according to airport documents submitted to the Atlanta City Council. “The operators have received numerous unsatisfactory complaints because of long wait times and poor customer service.”

Now, the airport is seeking Atlanta City Council approval to add another 2,397 square feet to the current 7,257-square-feet of leased space for the club, to increase capacity by 40 to 50 seats. It will expand into space made available by the closure of a smoking room and the relocation of an airport chapel.

The Club ATL’s operator, Airport Dimensions, “plans to implement a system that will automate the food and beverage ordering process and plans to eliminate its buffet to improve customer experience and satisfaction and increase revenue generation,” according to the airport document.

The Club ATL’s expansion comes as other airport lounge operators also see strong demand for access, with a deluge of travelers flooding airports and many seeking a respite from the busy concourses.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has imposed restrictions that limit entries into Sky Clubs for those who use credit cards for access, in an effort to limit overcrowding.

Last month at Hartsfield-Jackson, American Express opened its largest Centurion Lounge in the world , with outdoor terraces, showers and a whiskey bar.

A Georgia woman died after trying to get AirPod from under conveyor belt, reports say

A Georgia woman died after she dropped an AirPod under a conveyor and got caught in a chain while searching for it last week, several outlets reported.

Alyssa Drinkard, 21, died Friday night during a shift at a Club Car plant, which manufactures golf carts and other vehicles, NBC News reported.

According to an incident report obtained by WSBTV , a co-worker told officials that Drinkard got pinned under the machine after getting caught in the conveyor belt chain while trying to retrieve her airpod at around 9:45 p.m. on Friday.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

USA TODAY has requested a copy of the incident report from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

NBC News reported the co-worker told officials that because of the way Drinkard was pinned, she  "was not able to get her out, so she called for maintenance to come and shut the machine down. They began taking it apart once the machine was down and called 911."

Emergency responders pull Drinkard out

Responding emergency personnel were able to cut the metal frame around the conveyor and pull Drinkard out. She wasn't breathing but still had a pulse, WRDW reported.

Emergency personnel performed life-saving measures before Drinkard was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to WRDW.

Club Car did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment but in a statement told WRDW: “Our sincere condolences and thoughts are with the family, friends, and all impacted by this loss. We are working with authorities and the contractor in an investigation to determine the facts about what led to the incident.”

How Drake’s SXSW Strip Club Docuseries ‘Magic City’ Walked a ‘Fine Line’ With Nudity: ‘The Art Is Being Celebrated’

Magic City

New Drake -produced doscuseries “ Magic City : An American Fantasy” debuted at SXSW Monday night to a roaring crowd packed with friends, patrons and fans of the project’s titular iconic Atlanta strip club, Magic City.

After the first episode of the three-part doc, which does not yet have a distributor or platform attached, was screened, producer Cole Brown and director Charles Todd fielded a few questions from the audience, including “Was there anything too explicit to put in the documentary?”

Per the logline for the “Magic City” doc, “In 1985, phone salesman Michael Barney — friends call him Mr. Magic — puts his slick-talking gift to work, opening a small strip club in Atlanta. He plays DJ, bartender and bouncer while his only dancer separates men from their money. But soon, the celebrities arrive. Athletes from Michael Jordan to Shaq clamber to the club, DC The Brain Supreme mints an iconic hit record from the DJ booth and Outkast tests songs by watching the girls dance. Within a few years, Magic City would become the most famous strip club in Atlanta, and soon, the world. But when Mr. Magic gets sent away to federal prison, the empire he’s built may crumble.”

Magic City alum Gigi Maguire, who is one of the subjects in the doc, backed up Brown’s point about “not being salacious and not being vulgar” with a story about why she decided to appear nude for the “Magic City” doc, despite having left that chapter of her life behind.

“I am 12 years retired from Magic City, but y’all all just seen my titties,” said Maguire, who joined Brown, Todd and “Magic City” producers Jami Gertz and Jermaine Dupri, on stage. “And during that day when we were doing our studio filming, I had no idea that they were going to request this. And I remember them coming to me like, listen, we have this scene and we don’t know how you’re gonna feel, but here’s the vision. And I’m like, ‘Y’all want to see my titties? OK!'”

She added: “Strip is art, and the art is being celebrated, clearly.”

Aside from producing the project, Drake is also featured in the doc talking about his experiences at Magic City alongside fellow celebrities including Shaquille O’Neal, Killer Mike, T.I., Nelly and Big Boi.

Additional executive producers include showrunner Bayan Joonam, Brown, Gertz, Dupri, Adel “Future” Nur, Peter Nelson, Devin Chanda and Alex Kaplan.
