Stagnum Runabout 1300, surprising newcomer
Stagnumyachts.
- Wines + Makers
Vintage: 2009
Tasting: august 2019, variety: plavac mali.
Stagnum is one of the most important brands in the world of Croatian winemaking. It is the name of a hillside position on Peljesac Peninsula, where the cooling effect of the sea breeze coming from the cove of Prapratno brings a breath of life to rocky soil baking under hot sun. Here, renowned winemaking family Milos has their organic vineyards from which they get top quality Plavac Mali grapes. They produce wine with hallmarks of classical Old World winemaking. Stagnum is made with minimum intervention in the winery and released on the market after 10 years of aging.
Colour of Stagnum shows plenty of brownish tones revealing the age of the wine like those pesky grey streaks in one’s hair. However, at the age of 10, this wine is far from being “over the hill”.
On the nose as well as on the palate it will display typical Plavac Mali primary aromas like sour cherry and plum jam alongside raisins, while going further you will quickly be able to identify sun dried fig, carob, coffee, cocoa, leather, hints of dried leaves, etc.
On the palate is where you will truly be able to testify to the strength of Stagnum and the reason for its consistently high ratings. Powerful Plavac Mali tannins have been smoothed out and refined and create an imposing structure Stagnum needs to balance the wealth of aromas, high alcohol content (15% for this vintage), and decent acidity. Aromas will linger long after the wine has left your mouth and you will be left with a moment or two of pure Zen before getting ready for the next sip.
Stagnum is wonderfully paired with strong food with plenty of protein and fat, but honestly, it doesn’t need food at all. It is perhaps the best on its own, being such an interesting and rewarding companion, it leaves little need for additional input.
Being an organic wine Stagnum does change significantly vintage to vintage. 2009 is quite bold and boasts ripe and dried fruity aromas that manage to dominate over those of herbs and spices. All in all, it is an absolute classic of southern Croatia and one should not consider this market without trying it.

The stagnum Augusti: a unique Roman naval victory monument
The stagnum Augusti was a gigantic basin with seating, its own almost exclusive aqueduct, and an island. It stood as one of Rome’s most impressive waterworks, grandly reshaping the Transtiberim’s landscape; a new form of naval victory monument unparalled in size and scale. Augustus specifically constructed this stagnum in 2 B.C. to stage the performance of an inaugural naval battle or naumachia of great importance. “Athenians” and “Persians” once again fought the Battle of Salamis. Such a reenactment can be seen as a retrospective allusion to the Battle of Actium in terms of the civilized West’s victory over the barbaric East. Previous studies of the stagnum have considered its water control system, shape, exact location in the Transtiberim and various ideological factors of its naumachiae, but not the commemorative aspects of the stagnum itself. In this paper I argue that the stagnum Augusti was built to commemorate the naval victory at Actium. Ancient testimony makes clear the dual nature of the stagnum’s inaugural naumachia. Augustus’s choice to reenact Actium as Salamis made this naumachia a part of his classicizing program. Furthermore, the interpretation of the stagnum as a naval victory monument accords well with Rome’s tradition of naval victors and their commemorative monuments. By 2 B.C., eighteen naval victory monuments dotted Rome’s landscape. Monuments such as the Temple of Juturna (ca. 242 B.C., victory over Carthage) and the columna rostrata Octaviani (ca. 36 B.C., victory over Sextus Pompeius) made memorials set up by or for naval victors an integral component of urban life. Augustus’s stagnum was a veritable sea in the city specifically designed so that fleets of warships could perform a symbolic reenactment of a historically pivotal battle, thereby showcasing itself as the most naval of all naval victory monuments. My discussion of the stagnum Augusti—public venue for lavish spectacles, naval victory monument and later nemus Caesarum commemorating Gaius and Lucius Caesar—highlights the tendency for certain Augustan monuments to have multiple meanings. The Temple of Divus Iulius exhibited this same tendency when warship rams captured at Actium were attached to its façade. In my discussion of the stagnum, I bring to the forefront broader issues of what defines a victory monument and the different meanings that these memorials can have.

Eds. Georg Christ, Patrick Sänger, and Mike Carr (London: Routledge, 2022), 106-131. In the first half of the fifth century CE in the late Roman west the empire’s generals were heavily reliant on federates (foederati) – forces recruited and mobilized beyond the imperial frontiers – and military diasporas in general. This chapter explores the honorific epigraphy of statue bases in Rome dedicated to high ranked military commanders, whose actual power relied on their ability to raise a large army from among their federates. It was this primary power base that allowed Roman military elite to swiftly accumulate social prestige and highest imperial honors. Honorific statuary and inscriptions in the Forum Romanum celebrate a political and social capital monopolized by senior military officers and articulate the changing relationship between the emperor and high army command. These forms of representation provide an image of the social hierarchy and indirect evidence for the political importance of military diasporas. It will be argued that successful military leaders of the western empire who distinguished themselves in the service of the ruling regimes could not have reached their political status without securing personal loyalty of the Roman army and ‘barbarian’ federates alike. Late Roman magistri militum Stilicho, Flavius Constantius, and Aetius provide three case studies of such careers.

The use of the spelling stagnum as a form of stannum ( “ tin ” ) is unattested before Pliny. Some analyses suspect a Gaulish interference may have caused the rise of this alternative form. [1]

The Stagnum was indeed quite large, being able to host a large banquet for Nero, hosted by Tigillinus, which was held on a raft towed by other boats. The lake could also have served a more practical purpose, serving as a drainage area for the low-lying region of the Campus Martius, which was prone to flooding throughout antiquity.
