The yacht's interior from the main living areas, to the guest accommodation, is elegantly timeless. Her main salon features a plush lounge suite with custom designed coffee tables, easily seating all 12 guests in comfort. On the port side is a white onyx bar with custom oversized leather chairs. In a contemporary open plan, the formal dining area is set forward of the lounge, offering a Zebrawood table, flanked by white chairs and illuminated by a custom glass chandelier.

Her upper sky lounge is well-appointed offering a generous U shaped sofa, coffee table and white granite wet bar with seating. Custom art from iconic music artists is etched into a glass door, which conceals the large wine fridge. Throughout the yachts interior and exterior are state-of-the-art audio and visual systems, ensuring optimum entertainment. Views from the salon and sky lounge are limitless thanks to panoramic windows. Guest accommodation includes a full-beam master suite on the main deck, along with two double and two twin cabins with Pullmans on the lower deck. She is managed by an impeccable crew of 9.

KING BABY Specifications

The exterior living is well-appointed over 3 spacious and carefully designed decks, ideal for both casual and formal entertaining and relaxing. On the main aft deck are an alfresco dining table, additional seating and wet bar. This deck leads directly into the main salon, while also providing effortless access to the extended swim platform and a great assortment of water toys. An upper deck is adjacent to the sky lounge, with a further alfresco dining option and exterior lounge. Forward of the yacht’s bridge is a spacious seating area, with umbrellas for shade, along with a large sun pad. The sundeck on the 3rd level is capacious and perfect for any social occasion. Here guests can dine alfresco under the stars, enjoy a cool cocktail from the wet bar, take a dip in the deluxe Jacuzzi, or soak up the sun on the sun pads and chaise loungers. The 140ft superyacht KING BABY is powered by twin MTU 12V 4000 M73L engines giving her a maximum speed of 21 knots and a cruising speed of 17 knots. She is built to RINA Charter Class.

The 140-foot (42.7m) IAG luxury motor yacht KING BABY is not the owners’ first foray into the boating world, but it is their largest vessel to date. Launched in June 2015, KING BABY is a brand-new build, fresh from the shipyard and the perfect opportunity for her owners to have a “grown-up boat,” as they call her. “We wanted something unique that really captured a bit of who we are,” they proclaim, and KING BABY is as unique as they come. With both the interior and exterior of the yacht designed by the exceptional Evan K. Marshall, the yacht has a matchless flair that makes her instantly recognizable.

A 101-foot Hargrave custom build, a 68-foot Sunseeker predator, speed boats and Cigarette boats all at one time or another were in the fleet of the KING BABY’s owners, but when it was time to go up in size, the owners wanted something not normally found on the market. “It’s a refreshing new build that measures in at just less than 500 gross tons, which is exceptionally large for a 140-foot yacht,” they say. KING BABY is a remarkably roomy yacht, which is one of the owners’ favorite aspects, along with the attention to detail of the interior. As for style, this yacht has it in spades. IAG Yachts launches King Baby

IAG Yachts in China has delivered King Baby , a custom 140-foot motoryacht commissioned for an American client with Atlantic Yacht & Ship.

The client previously owned the 100-foot Hargrave King Baby . The IAG King Baby is the largest fiberglass yacht to be built at the China-based shipyard. She has exterior styling and interior design by Evan K. Marshall. Sergio Cutolo of Hydrotec handled engineering.

Twin MTU 16V 2000 engines provide a 14-knot cruising speed and a top end of 20-plus knots. Inside, King Baby has five guest staterooms and a décor featuring black walnut woodwork and extensive stone accents.

“IAG is now on the threshold of greatness in custom-yacht construction,” said Doug Hoogs, IGA’s representative in Fort Lauderdale. “This yacht project is history in the making.”

IAG Yachts launches 42.67m King Baby

IAG Yachts has launched  King Baby , a custom luxury yacht that started life as an idea on a napkin and will now be shown at FLIBS.

King Baby  is the first hull of a new series, which began as an order for a 41.1m IAG 135 from a US client that then grew into the first of the NobleStar 140 series . The composite 42.6m with a 9m beam features naval architecture by Sergio Cutolo of HydroTec and interior by Evan K Marshall .

Speaking on the interior design back in 2013, Marshall said: "A lot of the (exterior) style has been determined by the layout. The owners are often with a group of family and friends, so there is a huge flybridge deck space to ensure there is seating not just for the full guest complement, but for additional friends and family. There’s a large area forward of the pilothouse, also for socialising."

The owners’ love of sport is reflected in multiple outdoor televisions, while a spa pool aft on the flybridge deck becomes a water feature at night, with lighting to complement an LED feature built into the mast.

In terms of interior styling: "They wanted a contemporary, refreshing interior," Marshall said, "but at the same time they wanted it to be comfortable and inviting - they didn’t want it to be too stark, too minimalist. The boat has a lot of large windows, so a lot of light floods the space and the connection with the exterior is maximised. Anything that’s adjacent to windows is relatively low to maximise the amount of light."

King Baby  can sleep owners and eight guests in five cabins, while twin 2,600hp MTU engines should offer speeds over 18 knots, and a 3,000nm range at 12 knots.

She will arrive in Fort Lauderdale in September, where she will later be shown at FLIBS.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ son accused of sexual assault amid rapper’s sex-trafficking probe

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ son Christian “King” Combs has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman back in 2022 on a yacht his famous father chartered, according to a new lawsuit.

Per the complaint filed in Los Angeles Thursday and obtained by Page Six, Grace O’Marcaigh, who was hired to work on the boat, alleges the “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” rapper allegedly assaulted her during a charter “sold as a wholesome family excursion” that turned into a “hedonistic environment.”

The woman, who was 25 at the time, allegedly witnessed the Combs family party with a “constant rotation of suspected sex workers,” and consume all sorts of drugs during her 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift on the yacht.

She claims that even some of the alcoholic beverages were suspected to be laced with drugs given how some of the women on the boat allegedly responded to the booze.

O’Marcaigh claims Christian, who was 24 at the time of the alleged incident, joined the party on Dec. 28, 2022, and took and interest in her.

The son of Diddy and the late Kim Porter allegedly pressured her to do tequila shots and aggressively insisted that she drink more, claiming that she believes her drinks had also been “spiked.”

O’Marcaigh accuses Christian, now 26, of groping her legs, breast, anus and vagina, per the complaint.

There is allegedly audio — reportedly recorded by Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones who filed his own sexual assault lawsuit against dad Sean, 54 — of the steward telling the “Love You Better” rapper to stop touching her while kissing noises could be heard in the background.

“Excuse me, you don’t touch my legs like that. I’ll move my legs where I want to,” a woman who appears to be O’Marcaigh can reportedly be heard saying. “If I want to do this, then I will. You don’t touch my legs like that.” 

Christian purportedly responded, “Listen, you and everybody in the crew, it’s great.”

At one point the O’Marcaigh said to him, “Well, you can take your hand off my ass for the first thing,” per the suit, and she was able to resume her duties until Christian allegedly approached her later in the night to continue to grope her.

“His penis was erect, and he grabbed her arms and was trying to force [me] to perform oral sex on him,” she further claims.

Page Six has been unable to confirm the identities of those on the alleged audio clip, and we’re told un-redacted video and audio that backs up the alleged victim’s claims were not provided to opposing parties.

Attorney Aaron Dyer, who represents both King and Diddy, tells us Friday, “This is just another lewd and meritless claim from [lawyer] Tyrone Blackburn — just like what he filed in the Rodney Jones lawsuit, which he still has not served.

“This complaint is filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we’ve come to expect from Blackburn.”

He adds, “This is exactly why the federal judge in New York slapped him two days ago for a ‘pattern of behavior’ i n ‘improperly [filing] cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly,’ and why he was referred to the disciplinary committee in the Southern District of New York.”

Dyer concluded, “We will be filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim.”

O’Marcaigh’s lawyer, Tyrone Blackburn, meanwhile told NBC News , “Like father, like son,” seemingly referencing the string of sexual assault allegations that Diddy is facing from several women .

O’Marcaigh has allegedly had to deal with mental and emotional issues as a result of the alleged assault. She is seeking an unspecified amount of damages.

Prior to the lawsuit getting filed, Christian appeared unbothered by his father’s own legal issues.

Despite getting detained by authorities at dad Sean’s LA mansion on March 26 during Homeland’s Security federal investigation raids, he was recently seen hosting a lavish birthday party for himself.

Less than a week after the raids took place, Christian also seemed to address the ordeal, stating via Snapchat, “Stop with the cap,” which translates in slang to stop lying and happily posted clips from a workout with his current girlfriend, Raven Tracy, at the time.

It’s unclear whether he was referencing his father’s investigation or his own impending lawsuit.

Diddy 's son, Christian "King" Combs , is being sued for sexual assault, and the alleged victim claims she has audio recordings of him forcing himself on her during a yacht party ... and another accuser, Rodney Jones , is involved in this too.

Grace O'Marcaigh just filed the suit against King in L.A., alleging she was working as a steward on a yacht she claims Diddy himself chartered a few days before New Year's Eve in 2022.

In the suit, O'Marcaigh alleges she was doing her job during the shindig -- which she claims was advertised as a family-friendly excursion -- and King came on, after which she claims he immediately became fixated on her, uncomfortably so.

She alleges King had her take a shot of liquor, and she claims she immediately suspected it was spiked ... but despite that, she was able to tell him to get off of her and leave her alone. She claims King was trying to kiss and grope her, despite her protestations.

O'Marcaigh's lawsuit purports to describe audio recordings of what she claims depict her telling King she's not interested in sex with him and trying to get away from him while they were together in a studio on the yacht. Eventually, she says she was able to get away -- but claims King insisted she find him a place to sleep, so she says she led him to the theater.

Once there, O'Marcaigh claims King cornered her again and attempted to force her to perform oral sex on him -- but she says she fought him off, and includes in the docs photos of her forearm, which she claims was bruised in the altercation.

Eventually, O'Marcaigh says she was able to escape ... but claims to have suffered mentally and emotionally ever since. BTW, she claims Rodney Jones -- Diddy's formerly-hired music producer, who's also suing Diddy -- was in the mix for this yacht party, and she's being repped by Tyrone Blackburn , the same lawyer who filed Rodney's lawsuit.

Diddy is named as a defendant in this lawsuit as well ... accused of being liable for actually chartering the yacht. O'Marcaigh also claims to have witnessed Diddy onboard with women she calls "sex workers" ... and that Diddy exposed himself to Yung Miami while they played a game of "Careesha Please." Interestingly, she says that was all recorded by a Hulu camera crew.

O'Marcaigh is suing Diddy, specifically, for aiding and abetting King in the alleged assault.

Blackburn's filing of O'Marcaigh's suit comes 2 days after he himself got into some legal hot water. He will have to go before the Grievance Committee of New York's federal court system for improperly filing cases in federal court "to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly." Worst case scenario is the Committee could recommend he be disbarred.

Diddy's attorney Aaron Dyer tells TMZ ... “We have not seen this woman’s claim but I’m sure we can expect the same kind of manufactured lies we’ve come to expect from Tyrone Blackburn and his clients, just as we saw in Rodney Jones’ lawsuit – which has yet to be served." He adds, they learned about the lawsuit "the same way anyone hears about Mr. Blackburn’s filings: through the media.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawsuit that names  Sean “Diddy” Combs  as a co-defendant alleges that his son Christian “King” Combs sexually assaulted a woman working on a yacht chartered by his father.

The suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court says Sean Combs created the circumstances that led to the assault and paid to cover it up afterward. It’s the latest in a  series of lawsuits  accusing the producer and music mogul of sexual misconduct, and it comes amid a federal sex trafficking investigation that led Homeland Security agents to  raid his homes in Los Angeles and Miami  last week.

Grace O’Marcaigh, who worked as a crew member and a bartender on the boat, says that in late December 2022, Christian Combs pressured her to drink tequila that she believes was spiked with other drugs. He groped her breasts and genitals and attempted to force her to perform oral sex, the suit alleges.

The Associated Press does not typically name people who say they have been sexually abused unless they come forward publicly, as O’Marcaigh has done. She also consented to being named through her attorneys.

Aaron Dyer, an attorney for Sean and Christian Combs, called the lawsuit “lewd and meritless.”

“We will be filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim,” Dyer said in a statement.

Dyer called the investigation that brought  last week’s raids  “nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits.”

Sean Combs, who chartered the yacht throughout the holidays in 2022, “had full control of the staff and premises” and created circumstances where her assault was not only tolerated but encouraged.

O’Marcaigh, who was 25 at the time, said when Christian Combs, then 24, came aboard late one night, he appeared heavily intoxicated and began giving her inappropriate attention.

She said the two were in a music studio on board the ship, where producer  Rodney Jones, who filed his own lawsuit  in February, was told to be available around the clock for Sean Combs to work on his next album.

O’Marcaigh said in the suit that Christian Combs was insistent that she take shots of tequila, and she drank out of obligation.

The suit alleges he became increasingly aggressive with her, violently grabbing her arm as she tried to get out of the situation then groping her. The drinks made everything blurry, unusually quickly, the suit says.

Microphones in the studio, where Jones was told to capture everything, recorded their exchange, and the lawsuit includes a transcript where O’Marcaigh demands that Christian Combs stop touching her.

The suit alleges that he later continued the assault in the ship’s movie theater, which was used as a spare sleeping area and where she was attempting to find a place to spend the night because the rooms were all taken, before another crew member appeared and he stopped.

O’Marcaigh told the yacht’s captain about the assault the following morning, but she alleges that after Combs gave him a large amount of cash the same day, the captain failed to meaningfully investigate or take any action.

The suit says O’Marcaigh was eventually fired in retaliation and has since been unable to find work in the music industry where she had planned to build a career. It says since 2022, she has suffered severe emotional trauma.

The lawsuit seeks damages to be determined at trial.

Christian Combs is also a musical artist whose song “Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” with Kodak Black topped Billboard’s Mainstream R&B Hip-Hop charts in 2022. He was at his father’s Los Angeles home during last week’s searches, during which he and his brother were handcuffed but not arrested.

The producer Jones’ federal lawsuit, filed in February by Tyrone Blackburn, the same attorney as O’Marcaigh’s suit, includes allegations that Sean Combs coerced him to solicit prostitutes and pressured him to have sex with them.

Dyer’s statement said the newest lawsuit is “filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we’ve come to expect from Blackburn.”

He pointed out that U.S. District Judge Denise L. Cote criticized Blackburn in a separate lawsuit on Wednesday and referred him to a disciplinary committee for a “pattern of behavior” where he “improperly files cases in federal court to garner media attention, embarrass defendants with salacious allegations, and pressure defendants to settle quickly.”

Blackburn responded in an email that “a referral is not a sanction” and the statement from Combs’ lawyer was an attempt to “deflect and distract.”

“Christian Combs sexually assaulted Ms. O’Marcaigh, and we have it on tape,” Blackburn said.

Several lawsuits  have brought public scrutiny to the music and business mogul, beginning with a November suit from his former protégé and girlfriend, the  R&B singer Cassie , which alleged years of sexual abuse, including rape. It was  settled the following day .

Combs and his attorneys have denied all of the lawsuits’ allegations.

Combs, a three-time Grammy winner and the founder of Bad Boy Records, is among the most influential hip-hop producers and executives of the past three decades. He turned his hip-hop empire into a broader business empire that includes  private-label spirits , fashion, and a  TV network .

A yacht employee has accused Sean “Diddy” Combs’ son Christian “King” Combs of sexual assault, battery, and more in a complaint obtained by “Extra.”

Diddy's attorney Aaron Dyer told TMZ, “We have not seen this woman’s claim but I’m sure we can expect the same kind of manufactured lies we’ve come to expect from [her attorney] Tyrone Blackburn and his clients, just as we saw in Rodney Jones’ lawsuit — which has yet to be served." Dyer added that they learned of the filing “through the media.”

In the docs, Grace O’Marcaigh claims she encountered the Combs family after Diddy chartered a yacht from the company she worked for in December 2022.

She alleges that by the second week of working for Diddy she began to notice “partying and drug use,” adding the “make-up of the yacht quickly evolved” from Diddy and his family to “a constant rotation of suspected sex workers and other A-list celebrities.”

O’Marcaigh insists that what was “sold as a wholesome family excursion” turned into a “hedonistic environment.”

After seeing women “become intoxicated” after one shot or mixed drink, the plaintiff began to suspect the women on the yacht were being given alcohol “likely laced with drugs.”

She later claimed that while working the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift, Christian arrived on the yacht one morning around 5 a.m. “heavily intoxicated” and headed to the onboard recording studio.

He then started ordering “tequila shots be poured from a bottle of alcohol he may have brought on board,” and later insisted Grace take shots with him. Christian allegedly refused to take any shots from the bottle himself.

She obliged, she claims, in part because producer Rodney Jones was present. She says she planned to return to work, but things “became sinister.”

When she asked to leave, Christian “insisted” she “take a further shot and sit beside him.” He then allegedly “violently” grabbed her arm and “began hurting her.”

As she tried to leave, she “quickly suspected that the tequila was spiked.”

The papers claim, “At this point the situation escalated and plaintiff started to be physically assaulted by defendant… He touched plaintiff’s legs, breasts, anus and vagina. He also tried to kiss her and proceeded to kiss her neck, face and hands.”

Because he was there as a producer, Jones “has an audio recording of defendant… drugging and sexually assaulting plaintiff” and her trying to get away.

After the incident, O’Marcaigh was able to exit and tried to finish her shift.

Christian, however, then needed a place to sleep. She showed him to the cinema, the only place available.

While in the cinema, he allegedly “blocked her from exiting.” When she “retreated to a corner” he “started to grope her” while she “pushed him back.”

She then claims he “took off all of his clothes. His penis was erect and he grabbed her arms and was trying to force plaintiff to perform oral copulation on him.”

O’Marcaigh began “fighting” him. Soon after, her partner entered the room and Grace was “finally able to leave.”

The next day she complained to the captain who “failed to investigate” and accused her of “voluntarily partying with the guests” and then assigned her to work directly with Christian.

She claims Diddy had offered the captain a generous tip and orchestrated a “cover-up” that left her “isolated and retaliated against on the yacht.” She eventually lost her job.

In the docs, O’Marcaigh says she suffered bruising from the altercation with Christian, and that she was traumatized by the events that took place.

She claims she suffered from depression, anxiety, panic attacks, developed an eating disorder, and experienced suicidal ideation.

Grace also says she has suffered several epileptic seizures since the assault.

She also names Diddy in the lawsuit, accusing him of aiding and abetting his son.

Diddy’s Son Christian ‘King’ Combs Sued for Sexual Assault on Yacht

The lawsuit also names Sean “Diddy” Combs in the alleged December 2022 incident

Sean “Diddy” Combs and his youngest son Christian “King” Combs have been named in a lawsuit filed Thursday, accusing 26-year-old Christian of sexually assaulting a woman on a luxury yacht.

Filed by lawyers Tyrone A. Blackburn and Rodney S. Diggs, the lawsuit describes plaintiff Grace O’Marcaigh’s alleged encounter with Christian, who “insisted” she take a shot of tequila he poured for her while she was working as the boat’s sole on-duty steward in the early morning of Dec. 28, 2022. The yacht was chartered by the Combs family for a trip to St. Martin that winter.

The paperwork, obtained by TheWrap, ironically cites Cassie’s “Me and U” as playing in the background on the boat. Singer Cassie, whose full name is Casandra Ventura,  sued Diddy  late last year for sex trafficking and sexual assault.

O’Marcaigh had already taken one shot of tequila, but the “mood changed” and the rapper’s son allegedly “became aggressive” in his demand for her to take a “further shot.” The documents claim he “violently grabbed” her arm and began hurting her, which is when she “realized she was in a very dangerous situation.”

The alleged physical assault involved Christian trying to kiss her neck, face and hands, as well as touching her legs, breast, anus and vagina. O’Marcaigh suspects the tequila was spiked because she felt the effect of the shots quickly, and things became “blurry.”

The lawsuit also contains the transcript of an audio recording of what transpired between O’Marcaigh and Christian. Earlier on in its introduction of the plaintiff and defendant, the document describes Christian as an “autotuned and heavily edited rapper.” The paperwork also notes, “Unfortunately, as the saying has it, the apple does not fall far from the tree.”

The 31-page lawsuit, filed against Diddy’s son in Los Angeles County Superior Court, follows five other lawsuits against his father Diddy, accusing the rapper of separate occasions of sexual assault between 1990 and 2003. He has denied all wrongdoing.

The celebrity’s Los Angeles, Miami and New York properties were raided on March 25 by the Department of Homeland Security in the ongoing investigations. Diddy has denied the allegations with a statement from his defense lawyer calling the raid “a gross overuse of military-level force.”

“Prior to being sexually assaulted by defendant Christian Combs, plaintiff planned to work the entirety of her career in hospitality and the yachting industry,” O’Marcaigh’s attorneys write. “Unfortunately, those plans have been derailed due to the trauma plaintiff continues to have as a result of the assault.”

In addition to those two cases, Combs has been hit with a slew of other allegations of sexual assault and other wrongdoing over the past six months, including a quickly-settled case filed by his ex-girlfriend Cassie and a still-pending lawsuit filed a woman who claims Combs raped her when she was 17. The rapper is also facing an apparent federal criminal investigation, which led to raids of his homes last month . Combs has strongly denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

In a statement to Billboard Friday, Aaron Dyer , an attorney for both Sean and Christian Combs, sharply rejected the lawsuit’s allegations. He pointed specifically to a ruling earlier in the week in which a federal judge strongly criticized Blackburn over conduct in unrelated cases.

“This is just another lewd and meritless claim from Tyrone Blackburn — just like what he filed in the Rodney Jones lawsuit, which he still has not served. This complaint is filled with the same kind of manufactured lies and irrelevant facts we’ve come to expect from Blackburn,” Dyer said. “We will be filing a motion to dismiss this outrageous claim.”

In the new lawsuit, O’Marcaigh claims that Christian Combs arrived to the chartered yacht via smaller boat at 5 am on Dec. 28, 2022. She says he then “insisted” that she take shots of tequila, which she quickly came to suspect had been spiked with drugs. After she attempted to exit the situation, O’Marcaigh says he “violently” grabbed her and began to grope and assault her.

Because Jones was present and recording, O’Marcaigh says she has a recording in which she tells the younger Combs “excuse me, you don’t touch my legs like that” and “you can take your hand off my ass.”

Later in the same evening, O’Marcaigh says Combs demanded that she find him a place to sleep. When she took him to the yacht’s cinema, she says he “blocked her from exiting,” then “became physical and aggressive” even as she “pushed him back constantly.”

“Defendant C. Combs then took off all of his clothes,”  O’Marcaigh’s attorney says. “His penis was erect, and he grabbed her arms and was trying to force plaintiff to perform oral copulation on him.”

The lawsuit does not claim that the elder Combs participated in the assault. But she says he orchestrated a “coverup” that resulted in her eventual firing from her job. And she says he bears ultimate responsibility for his son’s actions because he chartered the yacht.

“Defendant S. Combs fostered and encouraged an environment of debauchery,” O’Marcaigh’s attorneys write. “He intentionally created an unsafe environment that gave license to [Christian] to believe that he was free to sexually assault plaintiff.”

A representative for Sean Combs did not immediately return a request for comment.

“It’s fair to say, at the beginning of the process, nobody wanted to make this show. No one knows anything about the Jacobean era,” Marshall tells The Hollywood Reporter of the 22 years that James spent as the ruler of both England and Scotland. “We know about Elizabeth I, Henry VIII, Queen Victoria, but people don’t dramatize this reign. It was quite a short reign, and I think because of his love for men, it’s been written out of history a little bit.”

James’ sexuality is a secret no more. Inspired by Benjamin Woolley’s nonfiction book The King’s Assassin and written by D.C. Moore ( Killing Eve , Not Safe for Work ), the seven-part limited series tells — with some artistic license — the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers ( Julianne Moore ), an unremarkable aristocrat who grooms her beautiful second son, George (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and break into his royal court.

While he is initially hesitant to utilize his charm and good looks to improve his family’s social standing, George gradually transforms into a formidable political figure — and Mary, despite accruing the wealth and influence she always wanted, is eventually forced to reckon with a monster of her own making. “George obviously starts off as a callow youth and then ends up becoming completely corrupted by power,” Marshall says.

Below, Moore and Marshall — who developed the show together as executive producers — explain the real-life history behind Mary & George , the creative team’s approach to choreographing the striking sex scenes, and how the mother-son duo’s outrageous scheming transformed them into some of the most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen.

Considering that there have not been many historical dramas set in the Jacobean era, what made you think the story of Mary and George Villiers was worthy of the miniseries treatment?

D.C. MOORE I read a lot of books to adapt, and you’re always looking for some sort of kernel that you can build a show around. And there were three things that really struck me.

The first was the undeniable evidence that King James’ love and lust for men was at the center of court — and it was an open secret. George, who became the Duke of Buckingham, was known colloquially as the Duke of Fuckingham. People at the time knew what was going on. If you read books about James, even into the ’90s and early 2000s, they’re very resistant to say [he liked men]. If guys in taverns in 1600s London can make jokes about it and know it’s happening, you could maybe lean into understanding this is what happened [in modern times].

In my first email to Liza, I talked about I, Claudius because that’s a show that I love and I’ve watched a lot of times. What I love about it is it’s all the normal relationships — mother and son, father, husband, daughter — but under the pressure of being at the center of the Roman Empire. This felt like a similar story. The third thing that appealed to me was that no one has told this story before. Mary Villiers is not famous. George Villiers isn’t very famous, even though he was the favorite of both James I and then was under [James’ son] Charles I.

LIZA MARSHALL [George] was one of the only commoners to ever do that — to move between reigns. So he was a hugely significant figure that everyone’s forgotten. 

MOORE As an example, in Shakespeare in Love , there’s the moment where Judi Dench’s Elizabeth turns up in the audience. It would never be James turning up in the audience because we just don’t keep him [in mind]. Even though he was around when Shakespeare was around, we don’t have him as an English cultural hero.

MARSHALL Most of Shakespeare’s players were written for James, like Macbeth . It was under James’ reign, not Elizabeth’s reign, so it’s a really interesting period in British history. But it’s not taught in schools [or] at universities. 

There’s one thing I only found out from the reviews in the U.K.: The first time the Archbishop of Canterbury saw George, [the Archbishop] had a wet dream that night. He wrote in his diary: “In my dream, he visited me in my bedroom, and he was most kind of a gentleman to me,” or something to that effect. And this is the Archbishop of Canterbury! [ Laughs. ] You find all these nuggets and you go, This is a story that is not well-behaved. It’s dynamic, exciting, rude, coarse, and it’s all the things that I want drama to be. There’s so much brilliant story. The difficult thing is [deciding] what not to tell. There was some great stuff that we couldn’t do.

Mary & George begins with two darkly comedic scenes that help establish not only the tone of this show but also the relationship between the titular characters. In 1592, Mary gives birth to George and does not immediately want to cut his umbilical cord, despite believing that he is of no human value. In 1612, Mary cuts a different kind of cord — the rope that George tries to use to hang himself. Why did you want to start the show that way? How do you feel those two scenes are indicative of the arc of their relationship?

It felt like we could tell a lot of the story about this young man who feels too much, but also a mother who knew, from the moment he was born, he didn’t have any intrinsic value. In this culture, second sons offer nothing. You’ve got no inheritance. You don’t carry your family name in the same way as the firstborn. So the stakes of who you are are true from the moment you come out of your mother. It felt like a dramatic way of representing those things. … But also, it suggests we’re not going to be in drawing rooms having boring conversations. 

MARSHALL Exactly. The very first draft of the very first episode always had the baby falling on the floor as the first moment in the show. I think that just sets our intentions; it’s a marker of what we wanted to do.

In the premiere, George is noticeably uncomfortable with his own body and does not know how to act upon his own desires — sexual or otherwise. But upon arrival in France, where Mary sends him to “learn the ways of refinement,” he is immediately confronted with an orgy at his temporary place of residence. By the end of his stay in France, he has sex with two men for the first time. How does his time abroad change him as a person?

MARSHALL He really did have a voracious sexual appetite for both men and women, and that is documented fact. He definitely sowed his seeds, as it were, right across Europe. [ Laughs. ]

MOORE Some of that stuff in how he was and held himself isn’t tracked in the history. But as a dramatist, you know where he’s going to end up, so you need to see change. So going from that awkward, on some level repressed young boy to a man who absolutely is not afraid of his indulgences — that’s the story.

The choreography of some of the sex scenes in this show is unlike anything I’ve ever watched on television before. How do you feel those scenes help to move the plot forward? Do you have any examples that come to mind?

MARSHALL For us, all the intimacy work is really important and really carefully scripted, and in no way do we feel it’s gratuitous. It always advances the plot. Sex was power. It’s such a key part of the story.

MOORE With the orgy at the beginning of [episode] three, there was a dramatic reason for that. [James’ lover] Somerset [played by Laurie Davidson] is fearing George, and he wants to put on a spectacular sexual show for his king to say, “You are mine, and I will give you the most pleasure.” He even gets George to be there to witness it, to sort of emasculate him. So it is, on some level, lascivious and indulgent, but there is a dramatic reason for it. That would be a really good example for me.

I think the sexual intimacy is vital for our story, and we couldn’t really look away from it. I also think it is important because people have not wanted James to have had sex; they don’t want him to have had sex with men, historically. For us to shy away from it would be continuing that denial and erasure of his story.

Mary and George are certainly both attracted to power, but they don’t seem to realize just how far they are willing to go in pursuit of that kind of influence until they repeatedly come face-to-face with James himself.

MOORE When Mary first sees the king [in the premiere], I think there’s an immediate understanding that — again, I’m going to use coarse language, I do apologize — she says, “He’s so cockstruck, it’s like a curse,” and she can see his obsession. It’s something she would’ve heard about, and she says in the episode she knows about it, but actually seeing it and then seeing that, “Oh, he and Somerset are in quite a tricky situation. They squabble like a man and a wife. Maybe there’s an opportunity here.” That is the window of opportunity that she sees, so that moment is really important.

When George first sees the king, he’s in a service position, and he’s seeing more of the court and the intimidation of it, so his journey is much harder. He has to go into that court and stand up and be seen.

MOORE From the historical record, that really seems like the real Mary. Whatever she could use and utilize, she did.

MARSHALL Because women had obviously no formal power at that time. They couldn’t hold property. They couldn’t have any money. It was just soft power, really. You had to manipulate people, and I think she was the master manipulator. 

MOORE I think it’s in episode fuve where [Mirren Mack’s] Katherine Manners and George stay in the same room overnight, and Mary really did that. [Mary] knew that if they stayed in a bed together overnight, [Catherine’s] father couldn’t resist the marriage, and her father was one of the richest men in England. So that’s what she did.

When you see [Amelia Gething’s] Frances Coke crying at her wedding at the end of [episode] four, that really happened. She really did cry. If you read the real, historical account of what Mary did to make that marriage happen, there were, like, 50 more things she did. I included more of them in the first few drafts, and everyone was like, “It’s too much.” It becomes farcical because so many people died, and so much blood was spilled, and so many tears were spilled in order to make that marriage happen.

At the end of the premiere, Mary tells a dejected George, who, after acting out in the royal court, was pardoned by James: “Kings do not pardon men for crimes done in their sight against their lovers’ say unless they yearn for the new.” How does this set up what is to come for the Villiers in the next six episodes?

MOORE We know that the seed has been planted. He’s spotted him, and he genuinely wouldn’t have pardoned him unless there’s something behind that. So as we go into the rest of the show, Mary just has to make sure that [George] can be seen again so that she can then take advantage, and then Somerset becomes the antagonist that they have to get past in order to survive.

MARSHALL The stakes in this world are life or death. If you get it wrong, you’d be put to death. So there’s high drama.

MOORE Shakespeare didn’t write any contemporary plays. He didn’t write anything about his contemporary time because he didn’t want to be cut open and hung. That would’ve happened. And this was a pretty brutal time.

MARSHALL It was a divine right of kings, so [James] had all the power. He really believed that he was selected by God to be the ruler, and everything funneled up to this one person who was in charge of absolutely everything. So that’s why everything was all rotating around the king. 

Given that Mary & George is one of the few historical dramas to present the Jacobean era to a wider audience, how do you hope this series will shed light on the legacy of these real-life individuals?

MARSHALL James was the man who commissioned the translation of the Bible that’s in all of the motel rooms in America, so it’s quite interesting to look at him in this light. He was involved in the founding of America, really. The beginnings of empire were under James’ reign, so he’s a hugely significant monarch who affected the course of modern history. I think it’s interesting to look at history afresh, to put women and queer characters back at the center of the narrative. 

MOORE But we’re not putting them at the heart of it; they were at the heart of it. The king wouldn’t have called himself queer, and he wouldn’t have that sense of his own sexuality. But he is a queer king, and Mary really was at the center of the court pulling lots of levers, potentially implicated in his murder. So, we are telling a story that’s true and really happened. So, on some level, we’re centering them, but we’re also just not erasing them as they have been erased before.

Mary & George airs Fridays on Starz at 9 p.m. in the U.S. and 10 p.m. in Canada through May 17. New episodes will also be available to stream every Friday at midnight on the Starz app.
