Super-yacht Tranquility at sea

Superyacht linked to Jho Low and 1MDB scandal for sale again, for an extra $74m

The Tranquility, seized by authorities and sold for a ‘bargain’ $126m in April, is back on market after stint as celebrity hangout

A superyacht once owned by Jho Low, a fugitive at the centre of Malaysia’s 1MDB financial scandal , has been put back on the market after a few months as a celebrity party venue.

The vessel, now named Tranquility, is being sold for US$200m, an increase of more than $70m on its previous price tag. It is currently owned by the Genting Group, a Malaysian conglomerate with business interests in real estate, hospitality, plantations and energy supply.

The firm bought the 91.5-metre yacht from the Malaysian government for $126m , which was about half its original purchase price, after it was seized by Indonesian authorities off the coast of Bali in 2018.

Previously named Equanimity, the yacht was owned by Malaysian businessman Low Taek Jho, 37, better known as Jho Low. He has been accused of masterminding the looting hundreds of millions of dollars from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, 1MDB. Low is in hiding, believed by many to be in China. He has previously said that he has not broken any laws.

Former prime minister Najib Razak, 66, is currently on trial in Kuala Lumpur for 1MDB-related charges.

Tranquility typifies Low’s super-luxury, celebrity-packed lifestyle . It features a gym, massage room, grand piano, swimming pool, sauna and “beach club” section for socialising. Winch Design, an exclusive British firm, designed the interiors.

Before moving to make a sale profit on the vessel, Genting rented it to super-rich clients at a cost of $1.2m a week. US celebrity Kylie Jenner hired it for her birthday celebrations.

Before going into hiding, Low used his wealth to move in similar circles to the reality TV star. He became friends with Paris Hilton and mixed with Hollywood’s film industry elite. In 2018, the producers of Martin Scorsese’s hit film The Wolf of Wall Street paid back $60m to the US government after allegations the film was funded with money stolen from 1MDB.

In April this year, when Genting acquired the yacht, Low spoke through his publicist of his anger at its “bargain-basement” $126m sale price.

PRESENTING JO I

Benetti luxury motor yacht JO I is a design and build to high standards. She is a sleek, modern superyacht. This megayacht features a classic interior and spacious decks. She features a wide range of activities.  in addition, she has a professional crew. All make up the perfect environment for relaxation and entertaining during a charter.

ARCHITECTURE

Motor yacht JO I has a beautiful dark blue hull. She boasts naval architecture from Italy’s most famous builder, Benetti.  Her exterior style is by Stefano Natucci.  The interior is a François Zuretti concept. The concept is per the owner’s family style.  The decorative theme is colonial. She has painted cherry wood joinery.

Luxury charter yacht JO offers spacious reception areas and decks. These are for ease, comfort, and stylish entertaining at sea or in port.

ACCOMMODATIONS

This superyacht is designed to fit perfectly with the requirements of charter use, easily accommodating up to 12 guests in 6 cabins – the owner’s suite, 2 double cabins and 2 twin cabins (with Pullman berths), and a ‘multipurpose’ cabin.

OWNER SUITE

The owner’s bedroom extends across the yacht’s full beam with a king-sized bed positioned in the center. As in the main saloon, the satin-finished cherry wood is set off with light-colored fabrics. Scatter cushions in rich silks finish off the decor.

A small adjacent saloon is furnished with a minibar, a desk, and a plasma television screen, with two armchairs and a coffee table. This area is useful as a private study to keep in contact with a business, or as a private sitting room.

The vast bathroom in the owner’s suite is a lavishly decorated oasis of marble and wood. There is a centrally-located spa with a large, deep bathtub and a shower cubicle as well.

FORMAL DINING SALON

The formal dining room and the lounge form a single saloon area on the main deck of the megayacht. Large side windows allow light to flood into this room in the daytime and afford a great view of the sea. A 42-inch pop-up plasma screen has DVD, satellite, and karaoke.

When the double doors of the saloon are slid back, the feeling of space is even greater, as the aft deck becomes a continuation of the saloon. For those moonlit evenings during a Caribbean yacht charter, guests can relax on the aft deck with cocktails before dinner or enjoy coffee and liqueurs afterward.

There are four guest staterooms amidships on the lower deck.  All bedrooms feature a predominance of satin cherry wood. Conversely, each features an individually themed décor. In specific,  with delicious fabrics in an exuberant mix of colors.  Throws and scatter cushions exist from famous design houses. For instance, Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Versace, and Mulberry.

The lounge has a bar area. It is for serving drinks. There is a traditional jukebox for playing favorite records.  The main feature of this room is a central wraparound sofa. It faces the plasma television screen between the glass entrance doors.  This gives the impression of a private cinema.  However, when the doors are open, there is a large alfresco dining area. Further protected by the overhang of the sundeck. An oval table takes center stage with its seating for 12.

The mega yacht features a sun deck with a vast sunbathing area perfect for enjoying the sea and surroundings in complete relaxation. This is a favorite sunning area for Croatia yacht charters as well as any Mediterranean luxury yacht charters.

The sundeck area offers a large Jacuzzi and wet bar.

The 98.4m superyacht Aviva was built for British businessman Joe Lewis who owns Tottenham Hotspur Football Club

Aviva: Inside the 98.4m Abeking & Rasmussen flagship yacht

The owner of Aviva challenged his design team to build a yacht around a padel tennis court — and 98m, 4,966GT and a mere three years later, she was launched.

She’s big — let’s get that out of the way. At 98.4 metres,  Aviva  became the 46th longest yacht in the world when she was delivered by  Abeking & Rasmussen  in 2017, and there are very few boats of her length that can match her for volume.

Her 17.24 metre beam is so generous that the designers pulled in the bridge deck superstructure to add side decks — improving crew circulation and refining the profile — because “we just didn’t need that much beam”.

They were right: spaces on board are magnificently expansive, from guest suites the size of the master suite on a 50 metre to an owner’s wardrobe that is, designer Andrew Langton notes quite seriously, “bigger than my house in France”. The fact that scale sits fairly low down on the list of Aviva ’s extraordinary features speaks to the imagination and belief-beggaring ambition of this project.

Aviva is the third yacht of her name delivered to owner Joe Lewis, British businessman and major shareholder in Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. The first, a 62 metre Winch design, was built at Feadship in the Netherlands; the second, a 68 metre Reymond Langton design , at Abeking & Rasmussen on the banks of the Weser river in Lemwerder, near Bremen.

For his grandest project yet Lewis returned to Abeking. “They were, surprisingly, much less conservative than other people. Maybe it’s because of the military stuff they do,” says Toby Silverton, head of design on the project, working with Reymond Langton, and who was also involved in Lewis’s two previous projects.

The yard’s biggest project had been 82.48 metre Secret and to take on Aviva it extended its build shed to accommodate yachts of up to 125 metres — a bold move into a larger size category. And its courage didn’t end there.

“Build a big yacht around a padel tennis court was the main brief, I guess,” says the yard’s project manager Andreas Hering, with admirable understatement. “In three years.”

  • How 74.5m Abeking & Rasmussen Elandess sprang from a blank sheet of paper

A project of this size might easily take five years, even if the yard already had a shed big enough for the purpose. And this was a highly unusual project. Design was accelerated too: the complex interior was penned in six months, when they would have liked a year; and the exterior in just one month, when it might more comfortably have taken six.

Knowing that makes Aviva ’s elegant profile even more impressive. “There was a lot of work to [visually] break up the mass, using facets,” says Langton. “We also tried to keep the lines long, so the sheer line is very long and jumps up forward with a clean line.”

They also minimised the details that act as size references, to disguise the scale. Rub rails are eliminated, stanchions replaced with glass, crew quarters windows are grouped to create long lines of glazing and even the anchor pocket has been elongated and disguised, lest a little square of gleaming stainless gives the game away.

Some upright elements of the silver superstructure were also picked out in a darker shade. “They disappear a bit, which makes the slope of the boat more raked,” says Langton.

The long bow adds to the effect, but the aesthetic is the beneficiary of a practical decision: this boat will roam far and the long covered bow makes it likely to survive the kind of rogue waves that have battered a few cruise ships over the years.

“I talked to the captain of the QE2 who went through a wave, and what happens is all the wheelhouse windows smash, they had four foot of water, you then lose all your instruments and they had no ability to control the boat, communicate or navigate,” says Silverton.

To strengthen Aviva he added extra watertight doors and armoured the two forward VIP cabins and superyacht wheelhouse so that they could be sealed off to save the boat. “You can lose everything on the bridge and you can still navigate and control the boat from the engine room,” he says.

Apart from safety, the main aim of the naval architecture was stability. Before the build of Lewis’s second Aviva , Silverton had been frustrated by a lack of data on how rolling motion affects passengers, so he put 36 people in a motion simulator for three days.

“There’s two things: one is the period of roll and the second is the way it rolls,” he says. “The typical roll period of the 62 metre would be around 7.5-7.8 seconds, one of two roll periods people were particularly upset by. And we found that if it was a soft stop and then a soft movement away again, people were much more tolerant of it.”

The design of the second boat addressed those concerns and the new Aviva ’s hull — patent pending — is an evolution of that. It has a nipped in “waist” which bulges back out below the waterline. This both slows and softens the roll. Her near-vertical bow and narrow sailing boat-like stern (which helps reduce pitching) also aid efficiency.

So much so that they were able to go down two engine sizes from the original spec (she has two MTU 16V4000 M73Ls, which put out 2,880kW each) and still hit 20.3 knots in sea trials. Silverton notes that she runs most comfortably at a zippy 16.5 knots, despite an official cruising speed of 14 knots.

Supplementary electric motors offer smooth manoeuvring and silent 11 knot running at night, while extra solidity comes from MAGLift stabilisers aft and one pair of fin stabilisers forward.

But it is the padel tennis court that lies literally and metaphorically at the heart of this project. This high intensity squash-tennis hybrid is a daily routine for Lewis and his explorations with his previous yachts had been limited to destinations with courts.

“The original idea I had was to put it on the aft end main deck and have folding panels and sliding walls,” says Langton. “It never even entered my head to put it inside, because it’s so big.”

Not only would putting the court at the back have made for a profile that Langton likens to a pick-up truck, but Silverton notes that the court would not have been playable at main-deck level. “You’re way above the roll centre, so it’s moving sideways – humans can’t cope with sideways movement of the ground,” says Silverton. “So we looked at putting it as low down as possible.”

Achieving such a large area in that position was an engineering feat but the results are spectacular. Its dimensions short-circuit spatial understanding — it seems impossible that this towering 6.65 metre tall space could be accommodated in Aviva ’s profile.

But it is, and it functions beautifully. “We’re running along at 19 knots, white horses everywhere, and they’re downstairs playing padel having no idea that there’s any sea at all,” says Silverton.

This sort of intelligent ambition has transformed every space on board into something special. “The owner has been in many businesses – hospitality, hotels – so he really understands how spaces work,” says Silverton.

Apart from strategically placed pantries and concealed crew entrances, there are three massive dumb waiters, a lower deck entrance for loading supplies, a dedicated crew galley and much more. The final GA was version 57.

On the more glamorous side of this equation, the upper saloon is a highly functional family room that’s comfortable, bright and airy. The sofas are extra squashy, and there’s a games table as well as a sculptural Bogányi piano.

The head height is 2.6 metres and nine metres of openable full-height windows run along each side of the room – with balconies. Rather than the usual glass, doors to the aft deck are leather clad, making the room feel more private. In fine weather, with those doors open, glass panels slide out to surround the aft deck dining area, creating one long, protected inside/outside space.

Designing such a huge area without pillars for support was a challenge and the corners are, says Hering, packed with extra structure. “Also, in the ceiling, all the girders are very thick because the unsupported length is just enormous.”

In contrast to this space, the main saloon below is a glamorous introduction to Aviva , up the sweeping superyacht staircase from the swim platform and inside to take in starry pieces from the owner’s art collection from a round of sunken seating. Adding a dash of intrigue there’s a secret cinema forward of the space, behind a hidden door.

The master suite is in the nose of the main deck rather than higher up, for extra stability. It stretches from a full-beam cabin to a massive bathroom centred with a monolithic Corian bathtub (there’s a spa just aft of the cabin for even more serious pampering), to a wardrobe-cum-dressing room of spectacular scale and glamour, inspired by Chanel boutiques.

But while some spaces are grand in scale, others are decidedly intimate. Rather than a dining saloon, there are two art-filled “bistros” on board for cosy meals, and many other small dining areas elsewhere. The owner’s bridge deck office is also modestly proportioned, with a conference room next door for larger meetings.

In terms of interior style, the owner’s brief was for something revolutionary. “He didn’t want anything to be symmetrical, it had to be curvy or organic,” says Langton. “He wanted it to be very different. No wood, nothing traditional.”

From the furniture and fittings to walls and overheads, there is barely a straight line on this boat. That was no mean feat for Abeking & Rasmussen’s outfitter Rodiek, which, as well as building most of the yacht’s bespoke furniture in organic forms, produced undulating wall panels from high density CNC-milled foam. “Five or ten years ago this was only used to do models or moulds for the car industry. It is very expensive,” says Langton.

It is, however, perfect for creating curves. “For this boat we decided to use a lot of new materials, even for the base materials, because of the big curved ceiling spaces,” says Hilmar Westermeyer, COO of Rodiek, who had to buy a new CNC milling machine for the project. Rodiek works only for Abeking & Rasmussen (and vice versa) in a symbiotic relationship.

In terms of the interior styling, the ethos was love it or lose it — at least visually. “This door disappears when it is closed and becomes part of the wall,” says Langton in one of the forward VIPs, swinging it to the latch, where its undulations perfectly meet those on the wall. “You either make a door a feature, make it beautiful, or you make it disappear.” The same goes for handles: those on wardrobes are invisible, but ones used on cabin doors are gnarled and textural, incorporated into a cracked bronze plate “like desert clay”.

“Because we’ve not used any wood, basically the whole interior is a mixture of leather and lacquer, it’s really almost tailored.” Take the artfully stitched cream leather of window frames, or the iridescent shot silk that runs down the broad main deck corridor, printed with a bespoke cartographical motif.

A neutral palette is enriched with precious materials: sunset-toned onyx, vanilla marble, shagreen, shimmering leathers. There are glossy panels dripping with resin and acrylic by Alex Turco in the lobby, and panels of velvet mottled with gold, by Sabina Fay Braxton, above guest beds. Staircases are works of art; one with floating treads like turbine blades, another a leather and glass form that spirals up from the floor.

This interior — where, as Langton puts it, almost every surface has “richness and form” – melts into the deck spaces via visual tricks: organic patterns in the Esthec decking that continue in the interior carpets; or the bar that is half in the main saloon and half on the aft deck, a mirror image joining the two spaces.

The superyacht sundeck is the exterior equivalent of the upper saloon — a comfortable family lounge. This massive space, with sunshine yellow upholstery, runs from a shaded central area for dining, with a projector for movie nights, to an aft sunbathing area with sunpads (with a wedge shape to sit as well as lie) and another forward around a spa pool, set low against a glass windbreak for spectacular views.

This forward end is a cosy space like so many on board. It’s that understanding of usable, enjoyable spaces, of human scale, human comfort and passions that makes Aviva a truly grand design. Those 98 metres just help pack it all on board.

  • Open Space, Eco-Friendly Tech: What a Rising Class of Millennial Superyacht Owners Is Looking For

Surveys predict that, 10 years from now, the average age of a superyacht buyer will be 35 to 40.

Millennials Are Buying Yachts

Ten years from now, Millennials will have taken over the superyacht world. At least that’s the forecast by several experts who are seeing ages of yacht buyers trending younger.

That trend is expected to continue, according to research from Italian yacht builder Rossinavi and the University of Monaco, with the average age of superyacht buyers decreasing 10 to 15 years over the next decade. That could make Millennials the primary buyers of superyachts.

The topic of younger buyers is a constant discussion in shipyard boardrooms and among designers looking to modify their designs to this changing market. It was also one of the topics at the recent Yachtmaster event in Key West, hosted by Benetti Yachts . Benetti sponsors Yachtmaster events twice a year (the European edition was in Budapest last month) to brief captains and other professionals on new trends in the superyacht industry.

Benetti Yachtmasters 2024

“We have been doing this event for 24 years now,” Benetti Americas manager Nick Bischoff told Robb Report . “The intent is to continue to build relationships with influencers of our current and prospective owners. In the beginning that meant mostly captains, but it’s expanded to include surveyors and owners’ reps, too.” The ultimate goal, says Bischoff, is for participants not only to network, but “put their heads together to create an ever-improving onboard experience both for owners and crew.”

Many seminars focused on the concept of onboard lifestyle, which most brokers and shipyards see as a primary driver for purchasing a yacht. Benetti’s head of product, Sebastiano Vida, also spoke about how lifestyle influences new designs in the yachts.

But Jason Dunbar, a broker and appraisal surveyor with Vessel Value Survey, recommended tough love to the brokers. His discussion about managing expectations for newbie owners included advice about being “realistic” with owners who are flush with cash, but might be new to the superyacht world. If an owner wants a brand-new 120-footer with a crew of six, but has a budget of $8 million, the broker is the one who needs to break the bad news. “A good broker has to tell people ‘Listen, that’s just not going to happen,’” says Dunbar. “That will save a lot of headaches down the road and will hopefully keep a client in boating for the long term.”

Benetti Yachtmaster Even Oasis Deck

A new buyer is often coming off a one-week charter that was magical: perfect weather, a well-oiled boat, and a crew looking forward to a little R&R after hustling all week for the charter guests. “It’s relatively easy to make things work like that one week at a time,” says Dunbar. “But a new owner who wants to use their boat for 10, 15, or 30 weeks, that’s a totally different thing. You may have to tell them they need to hire two crews and rotate them—which will be news to them.” He said that overworking the crew will “burn through humans.” The crew will be miserable, he says, which will make the boat not live up to the owners’ expectations. “The next thing you know these new owners will be long gone from yachting.”

Fraser Yachts CEO Anders Kurtén sees the new buyers as a boon for design creativity in an old-school industry. “It starts with a piece of paper,” he says. “We sit down and start designing these boats for younger clients and we see similar trends. Basically they all want to live their shore-based lives on a yacht.”

The segmented and often claustrophobic interiors of many current superyacht designs, says Dirand, just doesn’t float with the new generation. “Young owners’ preferences are honed by hospitality and a knowledge of architectural trends,” he says.

Azimut Benetti Group

Because of that, wellness centers have become focal points of design. As moguls like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have made clear as of late, having six-pack abs in middle age is the new Lamborghini. These new owners expect their boats to be designed with beach clubs with gyms, saunas, massage areas that allow owners and guests to work out or relax, amidst warm sun rays and luscious sea breezes.

Kurtén also pointed to green tech as key for the new generation of clients. “We’ve hit a point where a 150-foot sailboat can go across the Atlantic without burning a drop of fuel. And motoryachts can function on battery-only mode, at least when they are close to port,” he says. “That’s important to these new clients—they want to be green. A few years ago that was something you said at a cocktail party, but today it’s a reality for a lot of buyers.”

Peter Selivanoff, senior yacht service manager for Fraser, also spoke about how owners are seeking highly specialized crews who can perform multiple functions across the yacht.

Navigating these new realities is an important part for the industry to future-proof itself in the competitive realm of ultra-luxury products. This is a place where youth may not spring eternal but, at least for now, it reigns supreme.

Video: Indian-American Flashes, Threatens To Kill Dock Worker Over Yacht Parking

Video footage showed ajay thakore, also known as ace rogers, yelling profanities at the worker and allegedly making threats like "i'll kill you".

Video: Indian-American Flashes, Threatens To Kill Dock Worker Over Yacht Parking

The Indian-origin business in an Instagram post said there are "two sides to every story"

The owner of a $4.5 million Lamborghini yacht in San Diego, refused parking by a dock worker, exposed his genitals and threatened to kill him.

The man, identified as Indian-origin businessman Ajay Thakore, also goes by the name Ace Rogers. The incident occurred on Sunday when Mr Thakore wanted to park at the Seaforth Boat Rental to pick someone up, according to  Daily Mail .

The businessman was refused parking by a 21-year-old dock worker, following which he reportedly became aggressive.

Video footage showed him abusing the worker and allegedly making threats - he is reportedly heard saying, “I'll kill you! I will kill you! You know I'll kill you! I will kill you! I will kill you!”

Mr Thakore then pulled down his pants and exposed himself, making inappropriate gestures towards the worker, the video showed. He also throws money into the water.

Now, one of Mr Thakore's employees responded to the viral incident, stating that he was present that day and was invited to his boss' yacht when the incident happened.

He claimed that the two workers from the rental company physically got in his way and “the situation became tense”. There was a lot of screaming back and forth, he said, adding that he “didn't fully understand protocol” and felt “threatened” when he was going to step on the boat.

He claimed that his boss “flipped as he is very protective of his employees”. The employee claimed he was told to step back and it was “a confusing situation that became very tense”.

The video was shared on Ajay Thakore's official Instagram page, where he claimed that there are “two sides to every story".

In the caption, Mr Thakore explained, "It's easy to paint a picture with edited video clips from cell phones, but it's hard to explain context and look at a situation from all sides." Mr Thakore defended his employee, claiming he was being restricted, restrained, and threatened while attempting to board the yacht.

“As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that,” he wrote.

He claimed that it takes “two sides to escalate a situation” stating, “You can choose to believe that I just pulled up to a dock and started yelling, or you can realize that a lot happened before the cameras were rolling. You can also see we are leaving the scene, deescalating the situation, and not approaching to threaten.”

Mr Thakore addressed perceptions attached to the wealthy and famous, stating, "Successful people become so for a reason. I will always defend my own, it doesn't matter how many cameras are out. If you want to f*ck around, you are going to find out.”

Businessman allegedly threatens to ‘ruin’ dock worker, ‘drops his pants’ in heated dispute over yacht parking.

A California philanthropist allegedly threatened to kill a dock worker during a heated argument from his multimillion-dollar yacht, before dropping his pants and making several threatening gestures to the employee.

Ajay Thakore, a local entrepreneur in the San Diego area, attempted to dock his Lamborghini yacht at the private Marriot Marquis Marina to pick up one of his employees but was stopped by worker Joseph Holt on Sunday.

“I told him respectfully that he couldn’t be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat,” Holt told CBS8. “But yeah, it completely went the other way.”

Thakore, who goes by his social media name, Ace Rogers, was riding on his rare $4.5 million Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht at the time of the daytime dispute.

Marina worker Joseph Holt flips the bird to yacht owner Ajay Thakore on March 10, 2024 in San Diego.

Holt claimed Thakore became hostile as soon as he was told off.

“It escalated immediately. It was 0 to 100 immediately,” the 21-year-old worker added.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, allegedly began to threaten Holt’s life as the luxury speedboat drove away from the docks.

“I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill,” Thakore repeatedly yells, according to the video posted to YouTube.

Besides threatening to take Holt’s life, Thakore claimed to have the power to get the dock worker fired, ripping on the type of job he had.

“I’m a minimum wage worker, he was commenting on that, on my status just because of my job,” Holt said. “He was saying I’m nobody, I’m nothing, I work a silly job.”

Thakore allegedly threatened to kill the 21-year-old dock hand after the two got into a heated argument at the private dock.

“He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it,” he added.

During the heated discussion, Thakore allegedly pulled out his wallet and began throwing $100 bills at Holt and into the water, according to the outlet.

Holt said he tried to control himself during the incident and only gave Thakore the middle finger.

“I really didn’t know how to process it. I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird,” he said.

Holt said he tried his best to control himself during the incident and only gave Thakore the middle finger.

The dock hand blasted Thakore for his actions, especially in a public setting where he stripped nude and showed himself off.

“He had dropped his pants and started to make gestures to everybody watching and me. You can’t act that way in public. It’s just not OK. Especially threatening my life, at the very least. There were women and children there. That’s the most important part,” Holt said.

Thakore claims his outburst started because of a misunderstanding and was sorry for the people who saw it.

“The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange,” Thakore’s public relations team said in a statement, obtained by KFMB.

Port of San Diego Harbor Police were called to the Seaforth Boat rental dock for “a possible intoxicated vessel operator” but arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore and his boat had left.

As the boat drove off, Thakore allegedly dropped his pants to the floor and showed himself off.

The employee who attempted to board the extravagant boat defended his boss’s actions, saying Holt was hostile toward Thakore, and the businessman was only defending his team.

“As I went to kindly step onto the Yacht, I was impeded by two members that work for Seaforth Boat Rental,” Thakore’s employee Jason said on a post to the CEO’s Instagram account.

Jason said he was told to “stand back” the first time he went to step on the boat, and claimed he was forearmed during his second attempt to board the yacht.

“They physically got in my way, the situation became fairly tense, there was a lot of screaming back and forth, extremely confrontational, I didn’t fully understand protocol, as I was going to step onto the boat.”

“As all of this happened, my boss flipped and he’s very protective of me, his fiancée, of his employees.” Jason added. “It was a confusing situation that became very tense and very confrontational.”

Thakore claims his outburst started because of a misunderstanding and he was only defending his own employee.

Thakore captioned the post saying “there are two sides to every story and it’s easy to paint a picture with edited video clips from cell phones.”

“My employee Jason was being restricted, restrained, and threatened while trying to board my yacht. As a leader, I defend my own fiercely with everything I have, and I will never apologize for that,” the caption read.

Reviewed: The Horizon E98

  • By Diane M. Byrne
  • Updated: November 22, 2017

Horizon E98

We started talking, and I said, “I want the boat.”

That’s how Jo Ellard informed — surprised, really — the team at Horizon Yacht USA that she was ready not just to buy a bigger boat, but to build it.

It was the 2015 Horizon Yacht Owner Rendezvous in the Bahamas, and Ellard was there aboard her E76 motoryacht. She already knew the Horizon team well, having attended nearly all of the previous rendezvous and having purchased her boat, as a brokerage buy, in 2010. The fact that she’d owned the E76 for five years is why Roger Sowerbutts, director of Horizon Yacht USA, and Elise Moffitt, the U.S. marketing coordinator, were caught off guard by her statement. And little could they guess that the conversation would lead to the creation of an entirely new model, the Horizon E98.

Horizon E98

And that, ladies and gentlemen, typifies how Ellard gets things done. If you harbor any doubt, take a hint from the name of Ellard’s E98: Do It Now .

In fact, everything about her boating life hearkens back to that decree. About 40 years ago, she accompanied her husband, Bill, to a convention at Fort Lauderdale’s Pier Sixty-Six. While standing on their room’s balcony and admiring all the boats, he avowed that one day he’d own one, and soon bought a 33-foot Chris-Craft. Ellard promptly enrolled herself in the U.S. Coast Guard’s boat-handling classes, plus she took the wheel every time they ventured out.

After a while, she says, “I wanted to enjoy, not run the boat,” so they stepped up to a 53-foot Hatteras motoryacht, followed by a 64-foot Hatteras wide-body motoryacht, both run by a captain. After 20 years (yes, 20) of cruising aboard that yacht, and just before Bill died seven years ago, Ellard says, he declared, “We need to get you another boat.”

“When people go up in boats, they think of length, but this is more volume.” Jo Ellard, Owner, Do It Now

Having never been boat shopping herself, Ellard did what she knew best. The same drive that led her to become a champion rider, trainer and breeder of cutting horses (which separate cattle from a herd) led her to focus on exactly what she wanted, mainly an open flybridge and three good-size staterooms. She looked at 15 boats from five builders, unable to find the right combination. Finally, in fall 2010, a broker recommended a Horizon 76 in Key Largo, Florida. Ellard, who hadn’t heard of Horizon back then, took her captain to check it out.

“I knew within five minutes on the boat that it was right,” she says. “I’m not a big changer; I know what I want and how I want it.” No surprise, then, that she also christened her vessel Do It Now .

Horizon E98

Fast forward to the Bahamas conversation. Ellard was considering moving up the Horizon E88, since she mostly wanted more space. It came in an open-bridge version, which she liked, but didn’t feel much bigger than her 76: The former has a 21-foot beam, while the latter has an 18-foot-6-inch beam.

“I gotta get the boat I want,” she says. “It’s got to have the features I want.” That meant four staterooms — none with bunks — a his-and-hers head in the master and space for entertaining. Ellard wanted — no, needed — more headroom too. Nearly 6 feet tall herself, she has sons who tower over her. “We’re big people!” she laughs.

Horizon tapped the designer of the E88, John Lindblom, to transform Ellard’s feedback into what’s now the semicustom E98.

“When people go up in boats, they think of length, but this is more volume,” Ellard says. She got not only the spaciousness she wanted but also tailored touches throughout the layout and furnishings.

Horizon E98

For example, Ellard designed (and Horizon manufactured) an extra-deep settee to span the port side of the salon. (Long legs require longer cushions.) The salon is extra-long too. While the standard layout for the E98 has a formal dining area forward, Ellard saw no reason to include it. Do It Now was already getting a country-kitchen galley and a dining area on the open bridge. Plus, friends and family could eat in the salon — at the counter extending beneath a pass-through from the galley, another custom request. (A glass partition can close it off, if desired.)

From additional refrigerator and freezer drawers to the main-deck day-head being accessible from both the aft deck and salon, Do It Now has numerous practical, customized features. “Every cubbyhole we could find, I put storage in,” Ellard adds.

Jo Ellard

The E98 remains beneath the 100-foot threshold, has a 23-foot beam and retains a shallow, 6-foot draft. Ellard’s more than pleased, too, with how Horizon matched up the North American walnut paneling, with the grains running horizontally (her request). “I think it’s perfect,” she says of her new yacht.

“I’ve built a ton of stuff in my life. I’ve dealt with contractors,” Ellard says with a knowing look. “Everything with Horizon is upfront. There aren’t any surprises when you get the bill. What they tell you they’re going to do is what you get.”

High praise coming from someone who knows what she wants and how she wants it.
