5 reasons to experience the U.S. Sail Grand Prix Chicago at Navy Pier

Published on June 12, 2023 by Choose Chicago

The Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix Chicago at Navy Pier brings action-packed racing to Lake Michigan, Chicago’s Skyline Stadium , on June 16 – 17, 2023 to kick off the summer of racing.

National teams from the United States and all around the world will race hydro-foiling 50-foot race boats that literally fly over the water while sailing at 60+ mph speeds, thrilling crowds on land and on water, all in the heart of the Windy City.

Chicago is the only freshwater venue in the world, and is the first event to open SailGP’s season four! Here are five reasons to come experience the adrenaline-fueled racing at Navy Pier:

1. Race boats that literally fly out of the water. Really! The F50 catamaran uses hydrofoils to lift out of the water and achieve highway speeds, faster than almost any power boat! This means close racing, crashes, capsizes, and drama — definitely not your normal day on the water.

2. Come for the party, stay for the racing! Tickets start at just $35 for general admission on Friday or Saturday. The Race Stadium opens at 3 p.m. and racing begins at 4 p.m. each day.

New to the festivities this year: the White Claw™ Beach Club. With panoramic views of the racecourse, the Beach Club is located right at the water’s edge and is the best place to witness the fast and furious racing action of SailGP.

3. Feel the spray of the F50s flying by Navy Pier. SailGP brings fans closer into the action than any other sporting event with opportunities to meet world-class athletes on shore and catch a glimpse of the race boats up close!

4. Bring your own boat! Yes, Chicago’s Skyline Stadium really will feel like a race course and you have the opportunity to bring a boat (or ask a friend) and anchor right next to the race course for an unparalleled, up-close race experience!

5. Don’t have your own boat — no problem! Another new option is the On-Water Premium Presented By White Claw™ Spirits. Treat yourself to an exclusive race experience onboard the SailGP spectator boat fleet with unique viewing opportunities located immediately next to the race course.

How to watch Sail Grand Prix

Join the party on land or on water! Navy Pier is race stadium headquarters and will host the weekend party to watch as the turbo-charged 50-foot race boats fly only a few feet away, across Chicago’s Skyline Stadium. Enjoy live music and DJs, premium food and beverage experiences, fan shops, big screen TVs, fireworks, and more!

Racing takes place between Navy Pier and Adler Planetarium, guaranteeing a front-row seat along the waterfront as well.

DOWNTOWN — Chicago will host two races Downtown this summer: one on land and one on Lake Michigan.

The Rolex United States Sail Grand Prix returns for a second year June 16-17 at Navy Pier, officials announced Wednesday. The grand prix features national teams competing in fast, short races on high-speed catamarans.

The catamarans travel more than 60 mph as they cut through a course on Lake Michigan, which is the only freshwater venue for the grand prix.

Teams from New Zealand, Spain and Australia are among those competing.

In the spirit of friendly competition, officials from SailGP have invited officials from NASCAR for a crossover challenge between the two leagues to take place during the grand prix.

NASCAR officials will join the U.S. sailing team on their catamaran to race alongside DuSable Lake Shore Drive at highway speeds.

Although the catamarans don’t make revving noises like NASCAR cars , they’re still loud when racing through water, said U.S. SailGP athlete Cooper Dressler.

“It’s so loud that when we wear our helmets on board, we have integrated comms systems and microphones because that’s the only way we can hear each other,” Dressler said.

Dressler participated in a ceremonial helmet swap with NASCAR race officials Wednesday at a SailGP event. NASCAR is slated to take over Grant Park July 1-2.

Kara Bachman, executive director of the Chicago Sports Commission, called this summer the “summer of racing,” saying the events could potentially bring “thousands” of visitors to Chicago.

“What other sports can truly take place with the most beautiful skyline in the entire world?” Bachman said.

The east end of Navy Pier will be transformed into the SailGP Race Village featuring “stadium viewing with live commentary, big screens, and race-day entertainment,” according to a news release.

Sail GP tickets are $35 for general admission and $75 for waterfront grandstand seating.

Australia Wins Foiling Catamaran Race SailGP in a Nail-Biter Finish

SailGP Chicago racing boats

Australia claimed a surprise victory at this weekend’s SailGP event in Chicago over rivals Great Britain and Canada. It was the second race of SailGP’s third season, featuring state-of-the-art 50-ft. racing catamarans that are designed to lift on foils for speeds over 60 mph, while also being able to make hair-raisingly tight turns.

The fledgling sailing circuit has been bankrolled by Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison with the intent to become the Formula 1 of sailing. The fast raceboats are aimed at enticing local crowds, like those gathered at Navy Pier, but the series is also being packaged for a much larger television audience.

The circuit travels all over the world. Last season’s racing concluded last March in San Francisco, with the Australians claiming $1 million for the season finale against rivals Team USA and Team Japan.

Australia also won this season’s first event in Bermuda.

Over the weekend, however, it looked like the Aussies would be out of contention after the first day of racing. The Canadian team, which is racing its first season, won two of the three races. Driver Phil Robertson positioned his boat to claim the starts—which are crucial to the outcome of the race—with such precision that he won two of the three races. Australia was in fourth place at the end of the first day.

But the Australians won day two of the racing and eventually faced Canada and Great Britain in the three way-final. Australia’s driver Tom Slingsby dominated the final race, leading from the start to finish. The win gives Australia its fifth straight victory in the SailGP series.

“Our team is just really good under pressure,” said Slingsby following  the race. “I have always known that but it’s nice for them to be recognized for it. I know if we have a high-pressure situation, the team will perform.”

The fledgling race circuit continues to collect followers at its races. The grandstands of Chicago’s Navy Pier were bustling with spectators. Chicago was a different experience since the teams had not raced on freshwater before, and the light winds prompted the boats to sail with their largest 29-meter (95-foot) wing sails.

The weekend’s top speed was 41 mph, which was four times faster than the wind speed. Ben Ainslie, who leads Team Great Britain, last year set the record at 61.1 mph.

“There’s an element of danger we’re not trying to disguise,” Russell Coutts, who established the league, said about the high speeds and extreme maneuverability of the foiling yachts.

The big disappointment in Chicago, at least for local fans, was Team USA. It finished in eighth place, just ahead of Switzerland.

“Certainly all the fans deserve better,” said driver Jimmy Spithill following the races. “We just weren’t able to execute clean laps, it’s as simple as that. There were too many mistakes and too many errors. We’re going to regroup, learn the lessons and move on.”

The next SailGP event will take place in Plymouth, UK, July 30-31.

SYDNEY (AP) — Sydney Harbour is set to host SailGP racing for the next three years, including the ninth event of the international series’ third season in February 2023.

SailGP said Friday that the Australian Sail Grand Prix would be held from Feb. 18-19. An estimated 20,000 people turned out to watch Tom Slingsby’s Australia SailGP team win its home event in December 2021.

Slingsby, the team’s driver and chief executive, said it was good to get the race locked in for the next three years “on the most beautiful harbor in the world.”

“We’ve been sort of living on a year-by-year, fingers-crossed basis,” Slingsby said. “So to secure our future in Sydney is unbelievable for us. We should have great wind, great weather that time of year and it’d been great to win on home soil again.”

There are 10 teams competing in Season 3, including new franchises Canada and Switzerland and returning teams Australia, Denmark, France, Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Spain and the United States.

In the opening race of the season in Bermuda in May, Slingsby hit the starting line in the podium race in control and sailed ahead of Britain’s Ben Ainslie and Canada’s Phil Robertson for an easy win, reaching 42 mph (68 kph) as his 50-foot catamaran.

The victory came just six weeks after the Aussies’ dominating win in the $1 million, winner-take-all grand final of the pandemic-delayed Season 2 on San Francisco Bay. Team Australia also won the $1 million top prize in 2019, the inaugural season of tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s global league.

Slingsby, an Olympic gold medalist and former America’s Cup champion, has won four straight SailGP regattas and six of the last seven.

The next race in the SailGP series is this weekend in Chicago.

Nikki Haley drops out of GOP presidential race and says Trump has to "earn" support

By Brian Dakss, Caroline Linton, Nidia Cavazos

Updated on: March 6, 2024 / 7:59 PM EST / CBS News

Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley suspended her 2024 presidential campaign on Wednesday, clearing the path for former President Donald Trump to win the Republican nomination.

In short remarks at her campaign headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina, Haley did not endorse Trump, the front-runner for the nomination and the last remaining major candidate. She acknowledged that he will likely be the nominee and said she wished him well, but stopped short of supporting him.

"It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did not support him," Haley said. "And I hope he does that."

Two sources close to Haley say she is eager to remain part of the GOP conversation, is proud of being the last contender standing against Trump and is not ruling out anything moving forward. Her top allies believe her run cements her as the standard bearer for traditional Republican values, especially with the looming exit of Sen. Mitch McConnell, who is stepping down as Senate minority leader and not running for reelection.

Trump's reaction

Trump posted on social media that Haley got "TROUNCED" and pointed to Vermont's open primary for her victory there.

"At this point, I hope she stays in the 'race' and fights it out until the end!" Trump wrote.

Super Tuesday disappointment

The news comes just hours after Trump won  commanding victories  across nearly all the states holding Republican nominating contests on  Super Tuesday , according to CBS News projections.  Exit polls  showed Trump leading Haley among broad segments of the GOP electorate, with voters saying immigration and the economy were their most important issues.

Haley denied Trump a clean sweep of the Super Tuesday contests with a victory in Vermont's Republican primary, just her second win of the primary season.

Trump is on track to reach the necessary 1,215 delegates to clinch the Republican nomination next week.

Super Tuesday was the latest in a series of setbacks for Haley, who vowed to stay in the race at least until then.

In February, Trump won nearly 60% of the vote in her home state while she got just 39.5%.

And in Nevada, Haley suffered an embarrassing loss in the symbolic primary, where she was the only candidate still running who was on the ballot. "None of these" received more votes than Haley by a margin of 23 points. Days later, Trump ran in and won the Nevada caucuses, the only contest in the state to allocate delegates. Haley's campaign argued that the Nevada Republican Party had "rigged" the system for Trump.

Taking on Trump directly

Haley has been hammering Trump over Russia and raising questions about his ability to stand up to Russian President Vladimir Putin, especially after the death in February of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny .

Haley campaigned heavily in New Hampshire for months and spent some time in Iowa in the final weeks before the caucuses there. After losing in those two states, Haley vowed to continue her bid and went on to campaign in South Carolina.

Haley, who was criticized earlier in the campaign for not distancing herself enough from Trump, began to hit him harder — blaming him for GOP losses in the Senate and House and creating "political chaos."

And she began raising questions about Trump's age. Two days before the New Hampshire primary, on the CBS News broadcast " Face the Nation ," when Haley was asked about comments by Trump in which he appeared to confuse Haley with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Haley told moderator Margaret Brennan, "Don't be surprised, if you have someone that's 80 in office, their mental stability is going to continue to decline."

Pressed on whether she questioned Trump's mental fitness, Haley responded, "We're seeing he's just not at the same level he was at 2016. I think we're seeing some of that decline."

As the campaign headed into 2024, Haley and her team began touting the message of a "two-person race" — even before Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis dropped out shortly after Iowa.

As Haley focused on her lone competitor in the Republican field, she would often urge voters to see that "chaos follows Donald Trump" and that the country could not afford to be distracted, given imminent national threats.

Haley also pitched her electability compared to Trump, touting polls that showed she would handily beat President Biden in a general election match-up.

On the campaign trail, she often brought up the prospect of a Trump-Biden rematch, asking voters, "Do you want more of the same?"

She pleaded with voters to move forward with a "new generational leader" to effectively put an end to "the chaos and the drama" to be able to work on the country's most pressing needs.

Before the two-man race

Haley served in Trump's Cabinet as U.N. ambassador and heavily touted her experience with foreign policy as she campaigned, arguing that the U.S. must reject isolationist views and support American allies to keep the homeland safer.

Heading into the first contests, Haley ran an ad featuring the mother of Otto Warmbier, the American college student who was imprisoned in North Korea and died shortly after being returned to the U.S. On "Face the Nation " in January,  Haley accused Trump of trying to "buddy up with dictators that want to kill us."

In the earlier phase of the race, she was attacked by DeSantis, who called her a "corporatist," by entrepreneur Vivek Ramasaway, who invoked her daughter's use of TikTok — causing Haley to call him "scum" — and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

As Christie was ending his own presidential candidacy, he was caught on a hot microphone predicting Haley was going to "get smoked" in the primaries.

As DeSantis left the presidential race after his defeat in Iowa, he took a parting shot at Haley and endorsed Trump.

The news of Haley dropping out of the race was first reported by The Wall Street Journal .

Go & Show stretches from Madison, Wisconsin, to Peoria to Grand Rapids, Michigan, this week.

The Illinois Deer Classic settles into a better time slot — Friday to Sunday — at the Peoria Civic Center than the early April date last year. This is all things deer hunting. The $20 entry for the big buck contest includes a three-day pass to the show. (Opening day last year was interesting with tornado warning lining up our daughter and I with many others on an interior wall.)
