Instructor and Student

Captain Clint Najera

Captain Clint Najera received his ASA instructor’s certification in 1984 and has been teaching sailing ever since. When he wasn’t teaching sailing, he worked as a civilian mechanic for the Blue Angels.  Captain Clint has extensive sailing experience including several boat deliveries from Florida to Seattle through the Panama Canal.

Clint served for over 5 years as Sailing Director for a local sailing club. He has been twice named ASA Outstanding Instructor of the Year, and is certified to teach the Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising, Bareboat Cruising, Cruising Catamaran, as well as the advanced courses: Coastal Navigation, and Advanced Coastal Cruising.

Captain John Miller

Captain John Miller has 45+ years of sailing experience on boats ranging from a small Sunfish up to 77 ‘vessels including ketches, sloops, yawls and multihulls. He has logged well over 1800 days on the water and 70,000 nautical miles. His sailing adventures and work as a Professional Delivery Boat Captain have taken him from San Diego to Hawaii to the San Juan Islands, the Mississippi River to the Chesapeake Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and around the Florida Keys. For the past seven years, he has participated as Captain and Navigator, in multiple offshore races including the Transpac from Long to Honolulu, PV18 from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta, SoCal300 from Santa Barbara to San Diego, as well as the Beneteau Cup, 5 years in a row. Captain Ed Brunjes

Captain Ed Brunjes’ love of sailing began in June 1969 aboard a Baba 30 in Mission Bay San Diego. The experience left an unforgettable impression, as he felt connected with thousands of years of sailing history and to the sailors who spent their lives on the water.

After owning three different boats, and completing his first of 5 trips from San Diego to Hawaii, he decided to certify as an ASA instructor and make sailing education his new passion.

Captain Ed has been an ASA instructor for 13 years and is certified to teach every course the ASA offers including the beginning courses 101/103/104 and the more advanced and specialty courses including Coastal Navigation, Celestial Navigation, and Radar.

Captain Ed has worked as crew, second captain and navigator on multiple San Diego to Hawaii transits as well as from New Port Rhode Island to Annapolis Maryland. He has skippered numerous regattas and operated boats for private charters. Sailing has given him the experience of working in Abaco, Bahamas, Bermuda, and on the west coast including Annapolis Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay area.

When Ed is not on the water, he teaches Computer and Information Sciences and Miramar College. He specializes in C/C++ and was voted “Professor of the Year” twice by his students.

Captain Michael Rose

Captain Michael Rose’s love of the water began in childhood. He grew up boating, kayaking, and fishing on small lakes and rivers in Northern Virginia. He joined the Navy in 2002 and completed his training to become a Special Warfare Combatant Crewman (SWCC) in 2005, running 13-foot zodiacs to 70ft power vessels, 800-1000 hours per year since.

In 2008, he completed his ASA Certification for the 101/103/104/105/106, and 114 courses and is certified to teach the ASA 101/103, and 104 courses. He has sailing and motor yacht experience up and down the east and west coast and along the Gulf Coast. Internationally, his boating experience includes the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

In 2015 he joined US Patriot Sailing, a veterans sailboat racing program, located on the east coast. Upon transferring back to San Diego in 2017, he founded the San Diego chapter of US Patriot Sailing, acting as team captain. He has trained his 40+ team members and participated in weekly races and multi-day races aboard 25’ -40’+ sport boats and has crewed for multiple races on an 80’ Super Maxi racing yacht.

  • Catamaran capsize recovery
  • Small boat communications and teamwork

Topics are introduced on land and then practiced on Mission Bay in a 16' Hobie Getaway catamaran. Upon successful completion of the class you will be qualified to rent the Hobie Getaway so you will be able to keep sailing and practicing your skills after the class ends.

Is this the right class for me?

Hobie Sailing is one of two small boat sailing classes for students who have completed Advanced Sailing at MBAC. Hobie Sailing is the more popular option and is the right class if you want to become eligible to rent Hobie Getaways at MBAC.

If you have some sailing experience but have never taken a formal sailing class, we suggest starting with Basic Sailing . Our experience has shown that people who learn to sail informally often have gaps in their knowledge that are best addressed by completing an entry-level class.

Requirements

  • Prerequisite: MBAC Advanced Sailing or equivalent experience.
  • This class is open to all participants aged 14 and up.
  • A general liability waiver is required to participate. Anyone under 18 must have a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.
  • Participants must acknowledge that they are water safe (able to swim 50 meters and comfortably tread water).

How to Prepare

Wear comfortable clothes and dress in layers. The temperature can feel much cooler than expected once you are on the water, so it is a good idea to bring a jacket, even on warm days. We suggest comfortable closed-toed shoes. Sunglasses and a hat are highly recommended. Lifejackets are provided.

During this class you will practice capsize recoveries, which will involve getting into the water. This is usually done on the second day of the class but may move to the first day depending on conditions. Bring swimwear and a change of clothes to class each day. You may use a MBAC wetsuit for no additional charge while participating in this class.

Outside of the capsize recovery it is unlikely that you will end up in the water while sailing during this class. However, it is possible, so we recommend wearing clothes that can get wet at all times. It is likely that you will get a little bit wet from small splashes, handling wet lines, etc. anytime you are on a boat.

Bring sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, and snacks or lunch (for all-day classes). MBAC has a water bottle refilling station and there are a number of restaurants nearby, but keep in mind that food and drink are not available for purchase at MBAC.

Parking can be a challenge at MBAC, especially during the summer months. Please visit our parking page for more information.

What's Next?

Upon successful completion of Hobie Sailing you will be qualified to rent Hobie Getaways at MBAC.

Closure of long beach facility.

The marina we operate out of in Long Beach has not been able to negotiate a lease extension with the Hotel Maya and the hotel has decided to close the marina. We are therefore forced to close our Long Beach club and are in the process of moving the fleet back to San Diego. There are unfortunately no other marinas in the Long Beach/Los Angeles harbor that can accommodate the fleet along with an office to run the operation. We regret having to close the Long Beach club but at this point we have no other viable options. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call us at 619-291-7245 or email at [email protected]

Opinion: I’m a California farmer. Other states can learn from our water conservation success.

Last fall, all seven states sharing the Colorado River — Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming — came together and agreed on a short-term fix to alleviate pressing concerns caused by prolonged drought. Nevertheless, the river community is back at the negotiating table to craft a long-term plan to carry us past 2026. While it’s daunting to start from scratch, we believe the basis for a sustainable future will only work if we learn from our past.

Everyone involved in Western water is aware that California holds senior water rights on the Colorado River . The Imperial Irrigation District, with senior water rights dating to 1901, shares these present perfected rights with other public water agencies and tribes (Chemehuevi, Fort Mojave, Quechan and Colorado River Indians). Present perfected rights were established prior to and are protected in the Colorado River Compact of 1922. Known as the “Law of the River,” this sizable body of work represents more than 100 years of established water law. As such, it provides the most solid foundation for a stable future. Ignoring it guarantees chaos and years of prolonged court battles that will do nothing to help the millions who rely on the river.

People may be less familiar with the significant level of conservation undertaken by Southern California farmers and how it benefits San Diegans and other urban residents. One success story that should serve as a model for other basin states comes from the Imperial Valley. Decades ago, it embarked on an ambitious plan to preserve agricultural production through investment in on-farm water conservation, funded by urban partners like the San Diego County Water Authority. This successful program has allowed Imperial Irrigation District, San Diego County Water Authority, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Coachella Valley Water District and its farmers to conserve millions of gallons of water which now go to urban California families in San Diego and throughout Southern California, taking stress off other parts of the system. These partnerships can, and should, be utilized in all basin states, and we stand ready to share these strategies with states that until now may not have felt the need to conserve as aggressively as California.

Climate change and other factors mandate that all seven basin states must do their part. Upper Basin states — Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming — have suggested that Lower Basin states alone, Nevada, Arizona and California, should carry the burden, but that is an impractical solution. Climate change does not exist solely in one region. Anything less than aggressive efforts in every basin state shortchanges all who rely on the Colorado River.

In addition, all users must demand the creation of additional supply by pursuing bold new strategies, like those adopted by Southern California water agencies, as well as improving our water infrastructure efficiency and reducing wasteful use.

Protecting our water future is a huge undertaking, and everyone must acknowledge that conservation only happens with incentives, flexibility and greater funding.

Incentives allow both families and farms to survive, rather than fallowing ground, punishing cities and shuttering entire rural communities. But incentives cannot work in a vacuum. Flexibility would allow stored water to be used across multiple years and basins, rather than limiting conservation under a “use it or lose it” system. Expanding the toolbox would increase conservation and protect critical levels in Lake Mead and Lake Powell .

It’s also critical that our state and federal partners continue to provide necessary funding. Some critics claim this should not be a government responsibility. However, it’s important to recognize that conservation funding is necessary to protect a safe, affordable, reliable, domestic food supply for all Americans. All seven basin states make significant contributions to our food supply and nearly 90 percent of our nation’s leafy green winter vegetables come from Imperial County in California and Yuma, Arizona . At a time of widespread unrest in the world, food security is a key component of national security.

Any long-term agreement must also recognize that the Colorado River is the only water supply for the Imperial Valley . Unlike other basin states, there simply are no other sources available.

One final element we likely all support is settling on a plan for cooperation among all seven Colorado River Basin states, rather than having something imposed on us. And it will take all of us — farms, cities, small towns, tribes, international partners, and state, local and federal governments — working together to define a path forward that is equitable for all.
