Explore the Dodecanese Islands from Rhodes!

Rhodes is undoubtedly the most popular, cosmopolitan island of the Dodecanese. It features one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in Europe (a World Heritage Site in fact), a castle that is still pretty much the center of the main city of Rhodes. Once the base of operations of the Knights Order of Saint John, the Medieval Old Town is now packed with restaurants, bars and sun-baked, bougainvillea-filled verandas. Studded with monuments from the classical to the hellenistic to Byzantium to crusader and ottoman times, Rhodes is definitely a must for anyone even remotely interested in history.

Our yacht charter base on the island of Rhodes is perfect for exploring the Dodecanese Islands including the popular islands of Kos and Patmos, as well as the relaxed islands of Leros and Symi.

Rhodes is easily accessible by charter flights from many European countries and is a short connecting flight for those flying in to Athens.

Getting to New Rhodes Marina

Our fleet base is at the New Rhodes Marina, located in the northeast tip of the island, with shopping and dining options in the vicinity aplenty. Most visitors to Rhodes arrive via the Rhodes Airport, which is 22kms from the marina, less than half an hour taxi drive.

Public transport options are also available. If you are arriving as a group, we are happy to organize a private transfer for you from the airport by minibus with our reliable partners. Just let us know the details of your arrival and we will advise accordingly.

Sailing Itineraries from Rhodes

Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese, and, apart from a unique place sail around itself, a perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding islands and enjoying probably the most crystal-clear waters you have ever sailed in. All of the 14 beautiful, unique islands in the Dodecanese are worth visiting and sailing around. One who wishes to see most, if not all, of the marvels we call the Dodecanese, should reserve sufficient time to do so, which is precisely our first and foremost recommendation!

One week charters from Rhodes will usually include heading north towards Kos with stops at the islands of Symi and its picturesque harbor of breathtaking beauty, the island of Nysiros and its still active volcano, and the laid-back, unassuming island beauties of Tilos and Halki. We also have a charter base on Kos , so keep an eye out for special one way offers from Rhodes to Kos if you have a flexible itinerary!

Two week charter plans can incorporate the islands of Kalymnos further north, with its rich tradition of sponge fishing, laid back Leros, and the beautiful island of Patmos with its famous 13th century Monastery of Saint John. Each of these islands can easily fill up days of your time! So feel free to plot any course you like, and in case you need advice or possible route suggestions, simply ask us!

During summer the prevailing wind in the area is the annual Meltemi that blows strong, usually at force 4-6, from the North West. During spring and autumn, the wind usually blows from the South East at about force 2-4. There are numerous bays and secure anchorages in the Dodecanese Islands where you can find shelter in case of rough winds.

In the city of Rhodes in the north of the island, the ferry and cruise port and the Yacht Charter harbour Marina Mandraki are next to each other. Yacht Charter crews, who check in at Rhodes, reach the marina from the airport by taxi in about 20 minutes. The Port is loud and lively, but Yacht Charter crews reach the center of Rhodes easily walking. The harbor entrance is easy to see: on two pillars are the heraldic animals of Rhodes, stag and doe. On the pier, ideal for a stroll, is the fortress of Agios Nikolaos built in the 15th Century, and some old windmills, probably the same age. Opposite the Yacht Charter marina are the agora (marketplace) with numerous cafes and taverns, and in the center, there are many shops and restaurants. The west coast is completely made for tourism, with hotels, nightclubs and bars, but the tourist center due to the milder climate, is the zone around Faliraki at the east coast. Yacht Charter Rhodes - Greece

With an area of 1400 km2, Rhodes is the fourth largest Greek island and the capital island of the Dodecanese Archipelago in the southeastern Aegean Sea . Also located near the Turkish coast, Rhodes was an incredibly important port in the ancient times of the region, and the presence of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes, presence here was a testament to the island’s illustrious history. The bronze statue of Helios, the Greek sun god, was more than 30 meters high and was erected in the third century BC. For almost 70 years, it stood proudly at the entrance of Port Mandraki in Rhodes capital city of the same name before being destroyed by a violent earthquake. Today, in the place where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood, lush fauna grows and supports the existence of the island’s many deer, which, because of their prevalence, are also the official emblem of the island. Hibiscus plants are also typical of the region, and add an extra touch of beauty to the island’s background. After the Ottoman occupation between the 14th and early 20th centuries and the turmoil of the Second World War, Rhodes has become the second most popular Greek vacation island after Crete. Rhodes has 117,000 inhabitants, 90% of whom live off the island’s tourism industry. Rhodes enjoys a solid 3000 hours of sunshine per year, meaning the 250 kilometers of coastline as well as the many bays can be enjoyed thoroughly. The neighboring islands Karpathos, Kos , Kalymnos, Leros, Astypalea, Kasos, Symi, Tilos, Nisyros, Patmos, Halki, Leipsoi, Megisti (also known as Kastellorizo), Agathonisi, along with Rhodes’ extensive coastline and the coast of Turkey just 20 kilometers away make Rhodes a multifaceted and exciting destination for sailors and skippers. Surfers especially appreciate the winds in the region: the typical summer Meltemi winds, which are fairly strong and can reach up to a six on the Beaufort scale. They are well known on the north and west sides of the island, especially in Ixia, a surfing paradise. The Prasonisi peninsula in the south also has a good reputation for windsurfing, and Fanes, Kremasti, Theologos and Trianda are known as good surf spots. Divers also appreciate Rhodes for its numerous beautiful underwater areas, the best known of which include those near the hot springs of Kallithea on the northeast coast, where there is also a diving school. There are guided dives offered from Kolymbia, Lindos, Pefkos, and Plimiri . The water park in Faliraki, with water slides, a wave pool, an aqua gym, a pirate ship and a man-made river, is also a fun way to enjoy the water. At Sabina’s Watersport Rhodos, where both English and German are spoken, you can also rent out water skis and wakeboards.

Fortresses and Ruins, Churches and Chapels, Forts and Cisterns of the Dodecanese

Throughout their long histories, Rhodes and the rest of the Dodecanese have been of great interest particularly in the areas of art and cultural history. These are two important aspects of the region for many holiday goers who visit Rhodes. The most famous sites the island has to offer are the ancient Minoan Ruins of Lalysos at Cape Zonari on the northeastern part of Rhodes, the remains of the old city Kameiros on the west coast, and the site of the nearby ruins of the Fortress of the Order of Saint John in Monolithos, which today is widely used as a viewpoint and an ideal place to take some photos. Other than the Acropolis in Greece’s capital, the Acropolis in Lindos in southern Rhodes is the most visited in the country. The center of the complex, which you can visit for a small fee, forms part of the reconstructed Temple of Athena, built in the 4th century BC. Also worth seeing is the Byzantine chapel Agios Nikolaos Foundoukli, close to Eloussa, which was built in the 15th century. There are many ancient wonders to see on the Dodecanese islands around Rhodes: the ruins of a castle of the Order of Saint John can be found on the small neighboring island Alimia, just seven kilometers to the west of Rhodes; Karpathos boasts the ancient Roman cistern in Lefkos; on Kos you will find the remains of the Andimachia Fortress; Astypalea will show you a view of the Venetian castle which overlooks Chora; the Brouzi fortress on Leros sits at the entrance to the Agia Marina; you can take a visit to the Panormitis monastery on Symi; have a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Agios Ioannis monastery on Patmos; and see the magnificent churches of different eras on Lipsi.

Once the imposing Colossus of Rhodes is said to have welcomed sailors from afar at the port of Mandraki. Today, this no longer exists, but many other historic sights and places, which has earned the island a place among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On one of the sunniest islands in Europe, with over 3000 hours of sunshine per year, beach and bathing fans in particular will find their fulfillment and on the west side the stronger wind attracts surfers.

The island is a good starting point für a Törn into the Dodecanese group of islands . Navigation is not difficult even for beginners, as the coast slopes steeply and there are few shallows. However, one should keep in mind the Meltemi. So it can come here in the summer months also sometimes to strong winds. Nevertheless, the sailing area is also suitable for beginners and families.

Rhodes is one of the islands of the Dodecanese . In total, almost 160 islands belong to this archipelago, which partly overlap with the southern Sporades. Rhodes is the largest of the islands and also the most densely populated. It is only about 30 kilometers away from the Turkish mainland. Thus, destinations in Turkey such as Fethiye or Marmaris can also be approached from Rhodes, but here you have to consider the clearing out and in, which is necessary with every change of country. Start from Rhodes town, in the very north of the island on your personal dream vacation on the sailing yacht, or even a catamaran around the islands in the Aegean Sea. But not without having a look around the town first.

The historic city center is enclosed by an imposing city wall. In total, the wall, which dates back to the 14th century and was built by the Knights of St. John for defense against the Turks, is almost 5 kilometers long. There is the option to explore the city from the wall, a great opportunity to get an overview before fully immersing yourself in the old town.

The central square in the medieval old town is Hippocrates Square with the Owl Fountain in its center. Along the square, which is exceedingly popular in the summer months, are rows of cafes and restaurants. With a little luck, you can get one of the popular tables and watch the hustle and bustle from a distance. Especially when it gets hot from noon on, a stroll through the narrow, branched and shady alleys of the old town is worthwhile. Along the cobblestones are rows of houses made of old stone, which have become somewhat crooked over the years. Some of the rows of houses are connected by archways. Again and again, in the narrow house entrances, small quaint cafes and fancy souvenir stores can be found away from the large crowds. For those interested in the most important monuments of the city, one of the guided tours is certainly worthwhile; for those who like it a bit more adventurous, also by Segway or electric Trikke.

There are two marinas directly in Rhodes City in the north of the island, from which you can start your sailing vacation. Marina Mandraki was the city's war port in ancient times. Here the Colossus of Rhodes is said to have guarded the entrance, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, which has not been found to this day. The three windmills on the pier date from the medieval period. Here the grain was ground immediately after delivery. Since the time of the Crusaders, the port has been guarded by the fortress of Agios Nikolaos. Today the fortress offers a beautiful panoramic view over the city and the sea to the Turkish coast.

Rhodes and the Dodecanese are one of the most popular sailing areas in Greece. The wind conditions are stable, in the summer months the Meltemi offers partly wind forces up to 8 Beauforts. In addition, the average water temperature is 26 degrees and there is plenty of sunshine. Excellent conditions for a relaxing sailing vacation. The island world of the Dodecanese with its more than 100 inhabited and uninhabited islands offers a variety of sailing opportunities. Even if the area around Rhodes , Kos and Patmos enjoys great popularity among sailors, the islands offer countless bays and smaller islets, so that it is not too crowded even in the high season.

Also around Rhodes itself there are places worth seeing. The former capital of the island, Lindos, for example. With its narrow, car-free streets at the foot of the Acropolis, it is a picturesque sight even on approach. The beaches around the town are very popular, take advantage of the freedom offered by your yacht and find a quieter spot in one of the bays. For example in the very south of the island at Prasonisi beach. For the sporty vacationers you will find a kite and windsurfing rental and also for the physical well-being is provided.

Those who would like to visit an island close to the original Greece should make a stop in Chalki. The only 24 km2 large island west of Rhodes, which used to be an island of sponge divers, is only sparsely populated. Today Emporio in the east of the island is the only populated place. If you like hiking, you can explore the island on foot. For example to the former main village of the island, Chorio, which is abandoned today. Or to the monastery of Agios Ioánnis, in whose church medieval frescoes have been preserved. The beach in the bay of Pondamos is especially popular with families: the fine-grained sandy beach slopes gently and offers even the little ones a carefree day in the water.

Volcanic islands, history and tourist attractions on Kos

The island of Tilos is popular with hikers and also with birdwatchers. Since the early 2000s, the island has been promoting ecotourism and bird species conservation. Not only native bird species such as the Eleonora's falcon or the Mediterranean cormorant benefit from the hunting ban on the island, but migratory birds from Germany also stop over on the Greek island.

If you are interested in the ecclesiastical history on the islands of the Dodecanese, make a stop on Symi . The monastery of Archangel Michael in Panormitis in a small bay in the southwest of the island was established in the 18th century. Even today monks live here and pursue their monastic life. It is one of the largest monasteries in the Dodecanese and an important Orthodox place of pilgrimage.

A special feature of the island of Nisyros is that it is an active volcano, after Santorini even the most important volcano in the Aegean. This makes the island particularly fertile and offers a nice contrast to the otherwise rather barren islands of the Dodecanese. In the small village Nikia at the southeastern edge of the crater there is a volcano observatory with an attached museum. Here you can learn all kinds of interesting things about the volcano on the island and volcanism in general.

The third largest island of the Dodecanese Kos offers a wide range of experiences. The long sandy beaches in the west of the island offer sun worshippers and beach vacationers everything their heart desires. Adventures such as the Aquatic Water Park in the south of the island or the Lido Water Park in the north of the island offer families action-packed diversions from the tranquility on board. The Asklepieion of Kos, not far from the capital, is the most important historical site on the island. It is considered the birthplace of Hippocrates.

Hiking destinations and climbing routes - islands for active people

Among active vacationers, the island of Kalymnos is a popular vacation destination. The mountainous island, interspersed with fertile plains that shine in lush green, offers many caves and rocky coasts that drop steeply to the sea, providing attractive spots for hikers and climbing enthusiasts. Not far from Masouri there are about 4000 routes of all levels of difficulty in the limestone. The routes are well maintained and between many single pitches there are even a few multi-pitches. With a view of the sea and the neighboring island of Telendos, climbing under the Greek sun is excellent. After exhausting adventures on the wall, Telendos offers quiet bays to relax and for those who like diving, there are many spots to explore around the island.

Protected nature and sacred places

Agathonisi is the northernmost of the Dodecanese islands. It lies south of Samos and is largely untouched by tourism. During Meltemi, the bay Ormos Agios Georgios in the very south of the island offers excellent protection. Agathonisi, like its neighboring islands of Arki and Lipsi , is classified as a European bird sanctuary. They are even among the 10 most important bird sanctuaries in Greece. Nature and bird lovers can enjoy the Eleonora's falcon and coral gulls that return here every year to breed, and the eagle buzzard even lives on the island all year round.

Patmos belongs politically to the Dodecanese and geographically already to the southern Sporades. Among Orthodox Christians Patmos is considered a holy island, since it is presumably the place of creation of the Apocalypse from the New Testament. But Patmos has a lot to offer not only to Christian pilgrims. In the south of the island there are several sandy beaches, such as Psili Ammos beach. Many of the beaches around the island also offer a taverna with catering facilities and there are also smaller bays where you can enjoy a little peace and quiet, depending on what you feel like.

Secluded bays for those seeking peace and quiet

In the west of the island of Leros , the long indented bay, at the end of which lies the village of Lakki, forms one of the largest natural harbors in Greece. Free anchoring is prohibited in the bay, but the place has a small, well-maintained marina where it is easy to moor. The place is suitable for a relaxing afternoon ashore. A few souvenir stores invite you to browse and for the physical well-being there are several restaurants. There is also a supermarket in town, so that you can get food for your onward journey.

Pserimos is one of the smaller islands of the Dodecanese. There is one village on the island, which has only about 40 inhabitants. But therein lies the charm. Moor in one of the bays around the island, such as the bay Marathonda in the north of the island. The beach is pebbly, but the bay offers good conditions for snorkeling. In the bay of Vathy in the east of the island there is a beautiful sandy beach, with crystal clear water.

If you have more than a week from Rhodes, you can find a nice extension of your sailing trip in the Southern Sporades . In general, the islands of the Dodecanese are an excellent sailing area for sailors of all experience levels. Greece has its own charm, which few can escape. If you already know the country and would like to try something new, you should take a look at Croatia . Here, too, there is a wide range of sailing areas with good sailing conditions for sailors of all passions.

The seas surrounding Rhodes Island are a sailor paradise, offering crystal clear waters, breathtaking landscapes, and rich history.

Between the Turkish west coast and Crete there is one of the most beautiful sailing areas of the world. Lots of small islands provide with secure harbours and scenic bays to anchor. The area is relatively wind proof and the sea is usually crystal clear. Even in pre or after season the temperatures are quite pleasant.

Start your sailing trip from our base at Rhodes. Every night you can stay in charming harbours or head for lonely bays. You can choose relaxing day trips of about 12 to 30 sea miles from island to island or more challenging sportive routes.

In this sailing area you should be particularly cautious too. The word ‘Meltemi’ derives from the Turkish language and means breeze or soft wind, but sometimes happens that in longer periods the sea between the islands can be fairly rough. Sometimes it may be quite turbulent and definitely you have to expect awkward down gusts. In any case check the weather forecast! Planning your trip you should consider that in summer months the ‘Meltemi’ blows relatively constant from NW/W.

In the summer months it is stronger and more constant and blows at 4 -6 Beaufort. In May and June it just appears occasionally and from Mid-September it slowly decreases. The ‘Meltemi’ can be deflected between the islands. Around Rhodes it mainly blows from west. Between the islands further north it often blows from northwest. In summer down gusts must be expected at the leeside of the islands. Especially between Karpathos and Rhodes a rough sea will develop with a longer lasting ‘Meltemi’.

In spring and autumn the wind often blows at 2 – 4 Beaufort, possibly a bit more, from the southeast. In Winter the prevailing wind direction is southeast. There can be single storms too, which may arise from all directions. Planning your trip you should consider allowing enough extra time for the routes north or northwest.

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Moscow's High Rise Bohemia: The International Business District With No Business

The Moscow International Business Center (Also known as Moskva-City ) was meant to be Russia ’s ticket into the Western world. First conceived in 1992, the district at the edge of Moscow’s city center is intended to contain up to 300,000 inhabitants, employees and visitors at any given moment and, when completed, will house over 4 million square meters of prime retail, hotel and office space to create what the Russian government desired most from this project: an enormous financial district that could dwarf London’s Canary Wharf and challenge Manhattan . Twenty three years later though, Moscow-based real estate company Blackwood estimates that as much as 45% of this new space is entirely vacant and rents have plummeted far below the average for the rest of Moscow. The only press Moskva-City is attracting is for tenants like the High Level Hostel , a hostel catering to backpackers and other asset-poor tourists on the 43rd floor of the Imperia Tower , with prices starting at $25.50 for a bed in a six-person room. This is not the glittering world of western high finance that was envisioned back in the post-Soviet 90s; but what has it become instead?

As one might expect from a project of this sheer ambition, Moskva-City has a troubled past. The economic crash in 2008 hit Russia hard enough to evict the previous Mayor of Moscow , Yuri Luzhkov, who had been a cheerleader for the district, and replace him with the considerably more austere Sergei Sobyanin, who famously declared that the whole idea was an “urban planning mistake.” But as recently as 2013, the Wall Street Journal was triumphantly claiming that Moskva-City had risen from the dead, citing 80% occupancy rates and glowing quotes from industry insiders claiming that Moskva-City was the "place to be." Driven by record highs in oil prices, Moscow looked poised to become the next Dubai .

Instead, Moscow is now in the grip of an economic winter prompted by western sanctions and drops in the price of oil. The large financial groupings that Moskva-City was meant to shelter have been warned off by their inability to issue credit to international markets, for example - but Moskva-City isn’t just an Empire State Building left empty by the Great Depression.

A fundamental problem that is holding Moskva back compared to the rest of Moscow is the simple fact that currently, getting to Moskva-City is nigh-on impossible at peak hours. Moscow has long been plagued with transport problems, ever since the government failed to match the dramatic expansion of the city with a dramatic expansion of the transport system after the Second World War. Despite being only 2.5 miles from the Kremlin , Moskva-City is only just inside the ring road that bounds the city center and which acts as the only real transport link to it (and as a result, is clogged by construction vehicles.) A railway and metro hub has been finished, but so far only runs a one-stop shuttle service to the closest Metro station that is actually integrated with the rest of Moscow Metro. The isolation of the outer districts is a large, negative part of the Moscow psyche, and it’s not surprising that this is driving away the globetrotting financial elite this project was meant to attract.

The project is managed by architectural practice No.6, which is a constituent part of the large Moscow based practice Mosproject-2 , which is itself a public corporation headed up by Mikhail Vasilyevich Posokhin, who is apparently the “People’s Architect of Russia.” Despite all this state involvement, the project has still managed to become bogged down in bureaucratic infighting - each lot is managed and developed individually, which has led to developers competing for occupants by slashing rates.

Much has been written about the way modern financial districts and towers that inhabit them can be unwelcoming, forbidding or even hostile by design, but the skyscrapers of Moskva-City seem even less friendly than usual. The site - a former stone quarry, chosen out of necessity as the only place in the city center where a new district could be plausibly constructed - is isolated both physically and visually, leaving the cluster a stark anomaly on the city skyline. Even the names seem more imposing than optimistic now: Imperia, City of Capitals , Steel Peak.

The Mercury City Tower , so far the tallest completed building on the site, is officially “a strong reference to Russian constructivism, [which] gives the tower a strong vertical thrust similar to the one found in New York's Chrysler building .” It would be easy to criticize the Mercury City Tower for picking ‘inspirations’ that are so totally opposed to each other - The Chrysler building the defining emblem of American pre-crash confidence and Constructivism created with the express purpose (especially architecturally) of extending the Bolshevik revolution into a social revolution - but the way they smash those two inspirations together is almost beautifully ironic.

Even though the High Level Hostel is less an asset to a financial district than it is a PR problem, it’s been a huge success since opening in September, already ranked 27th out of 766 hostels in Moscow by TripAdvisor. According to the management agency for Moskva-City , 58% of the new occupant signings this year have been non-financial, including a number of small to medium size businesses. Other areas of office space have been occupied by a restaurant and a culinary school, while another space has been redeveloped into a 6,000 seat theater.

While Moskva-City is failing to be a financial district that could take on the world, it’s inadvertently becoming a humanized space catering to the very groups that the Russian economic miracle left behind. Taking advantage of rents lower than the rest of Moscow , the world class facilities and the sheer desperation of the developers, the humanization of Moskva-City could well create the world’s first high-rise bohemia.

Of course, these are not spaces designed for a community, or even for people: these are spaces designed for money, and there’s little scope for changing something that seems so baked into the design of Moskva-City . The High Level Hostel is trading off of the irony of being a hostel in a banking tower, but it’s perfectly possible that at some point people will no longer find this joke funny (especially in a building that seems hostile to the very idea of humor). The isolation of Moskva, even though it allowed this community to spring up in the first place, is just as detrimental to a humanized district as it is to a financial one: even bohemians need to move around the city, or the district risks becoming a black-spot instead of a hot-spot.

Moskva-City’s isolation won’t last forever. The end of construction will open the roads up to traffic, and plans to properly integrate the spur lines of the Metro in this area into the wider system are well under way. The integration of the district will inevitably push up rents, and the Russian economy will eventually boom once again. When that happens, Moskva-City is prime territory to be reconquered by the giants of international finance, and it seems unlikely that the municipal or national governments would want to step in to protect this accidental district. For now, though, the towers capture perfectly this moment of Russia ’s schizophrenic understanding of its place in the world.
