Smooth sailing: Junior sailors test their sea legs
Jr. sailors developing their sea legs.
It's 8 a.m., and while the rest of Kennebunkport is just coming to life on this overcast Friday morning, nine junior sailors are warming up their sea legs.
Sailing lessons at the Arundel Yacht Club start this morning start with a quick stretch. Sailing Director Chelsea Leighton then brings the group inside the lodge for a five-minute review of sailing terms — "sheet in," "ease out," "1-2-3 tacking" and "jibing" — because she knows their minds are already on the water.
"OK guys, grab your dagger boards and tillers, and let's head on out!" says Leighton, to cheers from her skippers.
They're only the second lesson into this Beginner 2 session, but the kids, ages 7 to 11, already know the drill. It's all hands on deck to collect and load the motorboat that will ferry them up the river to the dock and the 8-foot Optimist sailboats.
Like the river this morning, the kids are quiet on the ride up the Kennebunk, past boats like "Holiday" from Colorado, "Salt Wind" from Kennebunkport and the intriguingly named "Conflict."
Just past the metal bridge, the "Optis" await. The motorboats dock and, again, the students waste no time in getting down to business. In a matter of a few action-packed minutes, nine white sails fill the river basin.
They're tacking, jibing and otherwise trying to fill their sails, which — by looking at the lifeless American flag on shore — is no small feat today.
"No skulling, keep it straight. You'll go faster!" calls out Leighton from her motorboat. "No bumper boats, guys! It's not good for the boats."
As the sailors tack and jibe, Leighton, 20, motors her own boat alongside the kids as sailing instructors Sam Scribner, 16, and Mary Egan, 15, both in their second year teaching here, monitor the kids from a second motorboat.
The classes are timed to coincide with high tide and now, around 9 a.m., the basin is full but still the current is drawing the boats away. Sophia and her sister Lily Calve are drifting toward the bridge.
"I know the current is challenging; I know it's hard, but you're doing great," Leighton calls out.
Behind her, Eliot Snow, 10, makes an announcement. "I got wind! I got wind!" he yells.
"Eliot, don't stand up. You're going to block the wind!" reminds Leighton.
Meanwhile, John Cain, 9, is struggling with a tipping boat.
"Try to sit on the other side of the boat, opposite your sail," Leighton calls out. "It's a balance thing."
On her right, Peyton Whitney, 10, quickly shifts her weight from left to right to avoid swamping.
"This is Peyton's second session and you can tell," says Leighton, a lifelong sailor herself from Cape Elizabeth. "I think it's so good to have that continuity. It really helps to have a couple weeks under their belts."
As the kids practice their skills, the wind picks up and the sun is burning off the morning clouds. For a moment, it's smooth sailing.
"Their sails are full, which you like to see," says Leighton during a lull in the action.
Then Eliot loses a red Croc shoe overboard. Conor Stevens narrowly misses Ricky Calve and his partner Oliver's boat.
And so the lessons continue. "Always tiller toward trouble," says Leighton.
With the kinks out of their sails now, it's time to put their skills to the test on an obstacle course.
"When I blow the whistle once, go ahead and tack (tiller toward sail). When I blow the whistle twice, jibe (tiller away from the sail)," says Leighton.
Then it's "beach ball tag" among boats.
And their final challenge of the day? A race against time and the tide. Dangerously close to low tide now, they're only in a few feet of water and still have to de-rig, secure the boats, and hit the river. They know the drill, and in a matter of minutes they're back at the 52-year-old riverfront club.
"It's a real confidence booster with real tangible results," said Claire Julian, a sailor and an Arundel Yacht Club volunteer, back on shore. "It's very empowering. I mean, who doesn't want to be a captain of their own boat, even if it's only an 8-foot boat?"
"There's some kids where it's just something to try, and then there are some kids who become absolutely hooked," said Claire.
The final session for junior sailing lessons at the Arundel Yacht Club runs Aug. 10 to Aug. 27. Times vary according to the tides. Fees range from $100 to $175, depending on experience (classes include beginner, beginner 2, intermediate and advanced). Thr

Atlanta Yacht Club Beginner Sailing Classes Are you ready to experience the fun and excitement of sailing? Maybe you have previously sailed with a friend or have learning to sail on your bucket list. Perhaps your child has expressed interest in learning to sail. The Atlanta Yacht Club offers sailing lessons for ages 6 through adult. Sailing is lifelong sport that requires a knowledge of wind and sails to make the boat move.
A primary focus at Atlanta Yacht Club is teaching people how to sail and how to sail better. We are fortunate to have several members who are certified sailing instructors. These and other dedicated volunteers conduct sailing classes for juniors and adults. The emphasis is on water safety, boat handling, race tactics and -- not incidentally -- fun!
The club owns and maintains a fleet of Optimist, 420 and Flying Scot sailboats to use for teaching, as well as several utility craft for support and safety. Onshore sessions are conducted in our clubhouse followed by time on the water. With an emphasis on safety, participation in our sailing classes requires the ability to swim 25 yards unaided. In addition, each participant must bring to class a US Coast Guard approved life jacket.
AYC Adult Sailing Classes Our adult sail program includes five sessions held on Saturdays from 9:00 am to noon (15 hours of instruction) in the spring and fall. Each class will include basic onshore instruction as well as time on the water. Class size is limited, so we encourage early registration. Both AYC members and non-members are encouraged to sign up and participate.
Fees are $350 for non-members, and $125 for members per person for the 5-weekend session.

Dinghy Sailing
Arun Yacht Club is a sea sailing club with the fall-back of river sailing if conditions at sea are unsuitable. There is a busy year-round programme of dinghy racing - sea sailing from Easter to Christmas, with river sailing from Christmas to Easter. Based in Littlehampton Harbour and launching from the secure dinghy compound over a firm, sandy beach into the River Arun - from there it is a short sail through the harbour arms to the open sea.
Cruiser Sailing
Arun Yacht Club is just ten minutes from the sea and four hours sailing time from the Solent. We are also an ideal starting point for cruises to the east or south, with many of our regular sailors making passages to Normandy, Brittany and the Channel Islands. We have a clubhouse bar and restaurant and there are organised club races and cruises during the summer months.
Social Hospitality and Venue
The Arun Yacht Club overlooks the River Arun and Littlehampton from the west bank with unrivalled views of Littlehampton Harbour - a great place for our members to sit and watch the world go by whilst enjoying great food and reasonably priced drinks from the bar. It is also a great place for holding your party or wedding reception. Please get in touch with our office if you would like more details.
Arun Yacht club is an Royal Yachting Association recognised training centre. We offer a variety of sail training, powerboat, navigation, and other shore based courses for both adults and young people. The programme centres around sailing instruction for cadets on Saturday mornings, youth sailing weeks, and adult instruction on evenings and weekends. Powerboat and other shore based courses take place mainly at the weekends.
