Marco Ferrari’s new 65m superyacht concept
Italian designer marco ferrari unveils new 65m superyacht concept and explains why creating something practical is of the upmost importance….
Italian designer Marco Ferrari has introduced a new superyacht concept, a result of numerous studies over an extensive period of time. At 65m, Ferrari has created something which toys with being futuristic, yet remains within the realms of reality, something at the heart of Ferrari’s values when it comes his superyacht concept, which is a more unusual approach to conceptual design.
Ferrari’s 65m displacement yacht has been designed to accommodate 12 guests across six cabins, but the primary emphasis has been made on the outdoor areas of the vessel – after all, this is where guests are likely to spend the majority of their time. Ferrari has chosen to include two large pools, the larger of which is situated on the sun deck, which is an uncommon placement of the main swimming pool.
“The sun deck is probably the most used area of the yacht, so positioning [the larger] swimming pool here is likely to be very useful,” says Ferrari. “Having the pool on the sun deck is also offers more privacy in comparison to the aft pool, especially when in ports.” Further to the swimming pool on the 22m sun deck, Ferrari has also created an extensive sun lounge area, and an enclosed section with a gym and bar.
A dark colour scheme has been specifically selected to create a more wholesome project, without looking disjointed between hull and superstructure. “The black cut in the middle of the superstructure is one of the main features of the concept, and conditions the choice of this dark colour,” explains Ferrari. “I didn’t want to divide the hull and superstructure of the yacht, and the dark colour scheme helps to keep the yacht as one piece.”
An axe bow has also been implemented to ensure a softer ride, cutting through the waves, unlike a classic bow which typically rides over them. The result is significantly reduced pitching and a lower fuel consumption. Ferrari also explains that the axe bow configuration has a bigger internal volume, which enables a larger owner’s cabin, measuring 90 square metres.
Ferrari’s approach to conceptual design lies firmly within the realms of reality; by creating something more achievable, designers are offering something much more useful than creating something simply for the sake of being futuristic. “I like designers who have new ideas, but these must be realistic,” Ferrari explains. “I don’t like it when someone tries to design a very strange boat, only to be in a magazine for a period of time, then forgotten.”
This modern yet realistic approach to conceptual design derives from Ferrari’s more practical beginnings. “I have been on ships for 15 years with my father, who was captain on commercial ships. I know very well how a ship or boat should be inside and outside, and that’s what influences me, while other people try to design something a little stranger.”
This project is the product of a various stages of design, which have steadily evolved to arrive at the final version of the F65, which, I think, is a great looking project. While the concept is modern in its design, it is certainly not a wild and overly futuristic, which so many concepts are.

MAIN Yacht – High-end $65M Superyacht
The MAIN yacht is a 65.0m superyacht built in 2008 and delivered later that year by Codecasa at their shipyard in Viareggio.
She is the largest yacht ever built by the Italian company, being the first hull in its 65.0m series. She is also in the top 5% by LOA and she is currently sailing under the Italian flag.
MAIN yacht interior
The MAIN yacht’s interior was penned by Italian design house Ortelli Achitetti and the yacht.
A monochromatic palette decorates the inside of the vessel, perfectly matching the natural birchwood and marble.
Armani designed a lot of the furniture and decor in their in-house interiors divisions.
Armani himself insisted on designing the blinds and windows, as he wanted to ensure a panoramic view of the ocean.
Overall, MAIN features a combination of a minimalist and modern Asian style that can be found all over the ship.
MAIN can easily accommodate 12 guests in seven comfortable suites, one master suite, and six guest cabins.
She is also capable of carrying 14 crew members on board, including the captain of the yacht.
Some of the luxurious amenities the MAIN yacht has to offer are a large sundeck jacuzzi, cinema, spa pool, indoor gym, and an electric fireplace.
The MAIN yacht features exterior design by Codesa, as well as naval architecture.
Her exterior is built with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.
The vessel’s sleek appearance was designed to hide all technical details that could “stain” her spotless aesthetic.
Unlike many others, MAIN was created to camouflage at sea with a dark-green exterior color, according to the owner.
Her unique style was inspired by military vessels.
Specifications
This 65.0m superyacht has an 11.2m beam, a 3.7m draft, and a volume of 11.47 GT.
Powered by twin diesel Caterpillar (2,470HP) engines, the MAIN yacht cruises at 14 knots, reaching a maximum speed of 17 knots with a range of 6,910 n/M.
She has a fuel capacity of 160,000 liters.
She is fitted with zero-speed stabilizers, which make the onboard experience even more comfortable. In 2008, the MAIN yacht received the RINA (Registro Italiano Navale) certification.
Currently, MAIN is not for sale or available for private charter. However, her current price is $65 million with her annual running cost fluctuating between $6 – $14 million.

Superyacht Shemara: the 65m classic motor yacht is restored to her former glory
The 65-metre superyacht Shemara has been successfully relaunched after a three-year, one million man-hour rebuild project. Originally launched by JL Thornycroft in the UK in 1938, the classic motor yacht Shemara led a colourful life in the public spotlight under her original owners, industrialist Sir Bernard Docker and his wife Lady Norah. Sold at the end of the 1960s, her second owner cruised her for a short period before berthing her in Lowestoft, UK, where she remained largely forgotten for the better part of three decades. Her third owner saw her in the pages of Boat International magazine in 2007, went to see her and instantly fell in love. It was the start of a seven-year journey to bring her back to her former glory.
Shemara was towed to Portsmouth, UK, and hauled out in October 2010. Her new owner set up Shemara Refit LLP to be run by friend and business partner Peter Morton, who then set about recruiting naval architects from BAE along with several subcontractor companies, including Burgess Marine for the mechanical and structural elements, SEC Marine for the electrical installation, Design Unlimited for the GA and Studioilsa for interior design. The ensuing project – lasting three and a half years and taking one million man hours – has seen her reconfigured, refreshed, and largely rebuilt. The result is stunning, retaining her original character but with far superior spaces both on deck and within, and with all mod cons added – including a Rolls-Royce diesel-electric drive train with twin azimuthing pods aft instead of conventional shafts.
Inspiration
As one of the largest private yachts in existence when launched, Shemara epitomised the glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous. Restoring her to her former glory would prove to be a serious undertaking, but the rebuild has been done sympathetically, retaining the elegance and charm of the original both inside and out while reconfiguring the interior and deck spaces for modern living.
Construction
‘As the boat started to come apart, the level of shell plate renewal and core engineering required for the refit became quite apparent,’ says Nick Warren of Burgess Marine. Much of the steel plate on the hull was rotten, as was the entire stern section. She was meticulously rebuilt using as much of the original steel plate as possible, but with a new underwater profile to aid stability, add a keel and a bulbous bow, and to allow for the azimuthing drives aft. The superstructure was redesigned and rebuilt in aluminium, including the old wheelhouse which had originally been built in brass. The masts were replaced with carbon replicas, and the main funnel was remade in GRP – it now houses the satellite dish. Much of the original material – including the pine plank flooring, the teak decking and the tons of brass – was reused in the rebuilt yacht.
Exterior styling
At first glance you would be hard pressed to spot the difference between the old and new Shemara – she retains the classic, gentleman’s motor yacht lines of the original with just a few tweaks here and there. The upper deck superstructure is slightly longer to allow for the generous upper saloon and day bar, but elsewhere little has changed – the main deck portholes are original, and indeed the hull from the sheerline to the waterline is the original plating. Even the new superstructure was deliberately left unfaired, giving her a real, classic ship feel.
Interior design
A tweak of the interior spaces and GA by Design Unlimited along with inspired interior design from the London based Studioilsa gives Shemara an extraordinary feel inside – contemporary, yet classic. ‘The idea,’ says Ilsa Crawford of Studioilsa, ‘was to make it a home for the owner and his family, albeit a floating one. Too often the interiors of superyachts can feel more like hotels than homes.’ The esoteric mix of furniture works perfectly, and the spaces are wonderful – a giant formal saloon and dining room on the main deck, with an informal upper saloon and day bar that opens on three sides on the upper deck. Guest accommodation, comprising six double guest cabins and a larger VIP on the lower deck, and an owner’s suite forward on the upper deck, is classically comfortable. A new, grand central staircase links the decks.
Outdoor living
While Shemara Refit LLP and Burgess Marine were tackling the technical aspects of the rebuild, Design Unlimited explored the reconfiguration of the spaces. ‘We started developing the exterior while keeping all the character of the original boat, just improving the spaces without going over the top,’ says Design Unlimited founder Mark Tucker. The result is a wonderful array of deck spaces – from the observation deck atop the wheelhouse, to a large sunbathing area aft on the bridge deck, an expansive aft deck with plunge pool on the upper deck and an alfresco dining area on the main deck aft. The sidedecks – particularly on the upper deck – are wide, and reminiscent of the promenade decks of classic liners.
Engineering and performance
The key change was the installation of the Rolls-Royce diesel-electric system. 'She’s quite a low volume yacht to put that equipment in,’ says her current captain, Julian Spier, ‘but the key selling point from the owner’s perspective was the quietness of the system. It’s also efficient and there’s a lot of redundancy. It gives great manoeuvrability and it also allows for a dynamic positioning system.’ The system comprises five main generators that can supply anything from 300kW to over 1600kW depending on mode. The azimuthing pods and new bowthruster allow her to turn almost in her own length. Cruise speed is around 11 knots, with a maximum just over 14 knots.
