Which Superyacht is Right for You?

The type of superyachts best suited for you depends on the on-water experience you want. You may want power and speed, ensuring a motor-powered superyacht is right for you. Alternatively, you may want to feel the wind pushing you across the water, so a sailing yacht is best suited for your needs. In either respect, the most popular superyachts feature incredible amenities, top performance and exceptional design that allows them to retain their value for resale or charter.

When choosing the ideal superyacht, you – with the help of your broker – will weigh various options and features, including style, type of yacht, build pedigree, crew layout, facilities, décor and more. Whether you are looking for a large, modern motor yacht or a classically styled gentlemen’s yacht, Northrop & Johnson has a wide selection of superyacht types available for sale.

When buying or building a yacht, remember: first and foremost, your yacht is for you and your family or friends to use. What type of experience and use are you looking for in your ownership? Are you interested in a new or used yacht? Custom built or semi-custom? How are you planning to use your yacht? If you are planning to charter your yacht to help offset some of the running costs, then factor in the charterer, but remember, a yacht is very personal and you must consider your own needs as a priority.

Types of Superyachts

The type of yacht will shape the experience for the owner. The most popular superyachts (be they sail or motor) have a combination of elements that make them strong across the board both during ownership and in resale value and charter success. From the style and type of yacht and the build pedigree to the crew layout, the facilities and even the décor, there are many factors that, when combined, influence the enjoyment of yacht ownership. Whether you are looking for a large, modern motor yacht or a classically styled gentlemen’s yacht, Northrop & Johnson has a wide selection of superyacht types available for sale. When buying or building a yacht, remember that first and foremost your yacht is for you and your family or friends to use. What type of experience and use are you looking for in your ownership? From Germany to the Netherlands, Italy, and the United States, the superyacht industry employs highly skilled craftsmen and women at shipyards around the globe. The handcrafted vessels can be seen in bodies of water from the Mediterranean to the Bahamas, providing enjoyment—and jobs—for those on board. Here we highlight the top 20 superyacht shipyards in the world.

Lürssen

The German name tops the list, having built 11 out of 20 of the world’s largest superyachts in the last two decades. The 145-year-old family shipyard’s largest yacht, Azzam , spans 592 feet, 6 inches. Imagine six football fields laid end to end, with dozens of staterooms and saloons filled with beautiful woodwork, custom furniture, and art, all inside a high-tech hull. That 2013 launch was followed by others like 512-foot Dilbar and this year’s 364-foot Project Tis .

Still owned and managed by the Lürssen family, the company’s ability to consistently produce so many floating masterpieces is directly proportional to its skilled workforce and vast facilities. After recent acquisitions, including the famed Blohm & Voss yard, Lürssen owns eight shipyards across Germany. Its staff, some of the most experienced of any superyacht builder, include 400 designers, 600 engineers, 1,600 skilled workers, and 200 apprentices.

After launching the company in 1875, Friedrich Lürssen declared: “My firm shall be known as a leader in both quality and performance.”

With his name attached to the world’s largest yachts , Friedrich’s words have taken on a greater significance than he could ever have imagined.

Abeking & Rasmussen

Located across the river from Lürssen’s Lemwerder yard, Abeking & Rasmussen has created advanced running surfaces, like its Swath hull that skips over turbulent ocean waves rather than pounding across. The name is known for commercial and military vessels as well as custom yachts.

Its award winners include the 237-foot Cloudbreak , which set new design standards for expedition yachts, and the 244-foot Elandess , featuring its “Nemo Lounge” with a window below the waterline. Abeking’s flagship, the 321-foot Aviva , is unique among yachts its size with an unmatched interior volume that includes a regulation-sized paddle-tennis court .

The 112-year-old yard is typically ahead of the latest trends. It is developing a hybrid fuel cell powered by methanol that emits only clean steam. The system could well be the first hydrocarbon-emissions-free propulsion in the yachting world.

Feadship Amsterdam Yard

Feadship Amsterdam Yard.  Photo: Courtesy of Feadship

Formed as a group in 1949, Feadship is probably the most famous name among the Dutch builders. Feadship is comprised of the De Vries and Van Lent family yards, with locations in Aalsmeer, Makkum, Kaag, and Amsterdam. The group also includes De Voogt Naval Architects .

Feadship Amsterdam Yard

Feadship, credited with dozens of custom launches over the last seven decades, has grown into Holland’s superyacht powerhouse. In the 2015, it launched 333-foot Symphony , the first Feadship to cross the 100-meter mark. Faith , a stunning 312-footer launched two years later, has a streamlined profile and helicopter pad with hangar on the foredeck and swimming pool with glass floor (forming the ceiling of the beach club below) on the aft deck.

Last year, Feadship launched a half-dozen other yachts, including 241-foot Sherpa . Its expedition-yacht exterior, including two industrial-looking exhaust stacks on the aft cockpit, shows Feadship’s design capabilities. Its Project 814, with its vertical bow and long, lean forefoot, will be an example of an entirely new look, when launched later this year.

Nobiskrug Sailing Yacht A

Specializing in made-to-measure, custom-built superyachts, award-winning builder Nobiskrug produces its vessels out of three different facilities in northern Germany: Rendsburg, Kiel-Gaarden, and Kiel-Friedrichsort. The yard was established in Rendsburg in 1905, shortly after the Kiel Canal opened in 1895. Today Nobiskrug employs more than 1,000 highly skilled craftsmen and women across the three shipyards. In-house production includes hull construction, steel cutting, mechanical work, fitting, pipe fitting, paint, electrical, and carpentry, with these workshops organized under one roof.

Shown above is the brand’s Best of the Best winner A , designed by Philippe Starck and built by Nobiskrug, the yacht is a 470-foot sail-assisted motor yacht that was delivered in 2017.

Nobiskrug’s 241-foot Mogambo won Robb Report ‘s Best of the Best award in 2013. Featuring both interiors and exteriors by UK-based Reymond Langton Design, Mogambo is a great example of Nobiskrug’s past projects.

Representing the future of the company, Nobiskrug’s hybrid superyacht Artefact (ex-project 790) was revealed last fall in Monaco and is scheduled for a 2019 delivery. With an exterior by Canada’s Gregory Marshall Studio and interior by Reymond Langton Design, the yacht features numerous eco-friendly characteristics, such as lower emissions and a quieter ride. It also utilizes a Dynamic Positioning System to hold its position for longer, delaying the need for sea-bed-damaging anchors.

Amels Shipyard

Amels celebrated its centennial in 2018, but the superyacht builder has modern facilities and one of the industry’s smartest business plans. It was acquired by the Damen Group in 1991, which gave it the financial resources and vision to become one of the most respected custom yacht builders. Ten years ago, it launched a Limited Editions range. Built on proven hull platforms from 180 to 272 feet, owners have a choice of customizing both the interior and exteriors. Close to 40 yachts have been delivered since, proving that the disruptive concept has a place in yacht-building.

Used for military and commercial vessels, it has the facilities and skilled workers to handle the world’s largest custom, steel-hulled yachts. Noteworthy launches last year include 243-foot Universe , 205-foot Sea & US , and 189-foot Volpini 2 .

Oceanco Launches 110-Meter Project Jubilee Superyacht

Oceanco is a relative newcomer, but it has created some of the world’s most beautiful custom superyachts. Names like the recently launched 295-foot DAR are great examples, but the yard has also built technically advanced vessels like the 350-foot sailing superyacht, Black Pearl , with some of the most advanced sails ever designed. Its other award winners like Jubilee , Aquijo , and Infinity , retain their own unique DNA. The yard has worked with the most sought-after yacht designers, including Terence Disdale , Nuvolari-Lenard , Espen Øino , Sam Sorgiovanni , Igor Lobanov , Tim Heywood , and Andrew Winch .

The Alblasserdam yard is working on 357-foot Project Bravo , the first Oceanco with its proprietary LIFE design (lengthened, innovative, fuel-efficient, and eco-friendly). Bravo will combine hybrid propulsion, weight savings, and extra interior space in a package that could be a game-changer for yachting. “Our approach with Bravo was to maintain a stunningly sleek profile without sacrificing interior space,” says designer Dan Lenard. “The new exterior style concept is bound to create a new design stream.”

Among the Dutch builders, Heesen has seen the greatest expansion of its model line, which is available in aluminum and steel. Its recent launches range from the 164-foot futuristic hybrid, Home , to more conventional designs like the 180-foot Laurentia . The yard really started its upward trajectory in 2011 with the simultaneous launches of Quinta Essentia and Satori, two very different yachts that captivated the superyacht world.

Two years later, Galactica Star , the first fast-displacement yacht, showed that Heesen lived in a world where design and technology intersect. Its largest-ever build, 230-foot Galactica Super Nova , was a sign that Heesen can move into larger categories. The yard has drawings of an ultra-modern 83-meter custom Maximus concept, complete with an entirely open cockpit and swimming pool with waterfall, waiting for the right owner.

Benetti is not only the world’s largest superyacht builder, it is also one of the oldest. Started in 1875, the Italian builder always has a parade of custom and semicustom builds. The Azimut Benetti Group now has 97 yachts under build over 78 feet. In the last year, Benetti has launched a range of yachts, including Ironman , its sixth Fast 140, 207-foot custom Metis and 226-foot Spectre .

Benetti also recently launched its largest-ever build, 351-foot FB277, one of three gigayachts currently being built in its Livorno yard. The other two are due to launch this year. The world’s largest superyacht builder continues to push the boundaries in design and technology, as it moves into gigayacht territory that the yards in Northern Europe have dominated for years.

The 262-foot Chopi Chopi was a landmark yacht for CRN when it launched in 2013, showing that the Italian yard could go toe-to-toe with the yards in Northern Europe. Chopi Chopi is still CRN’s largest build to date, but the Ancona facility has launched a succession of custom yachts that have established CRN’s place as the crown jewel of the Ferretti Group. The military exterior of 180-foot Atlante , sleek hull of 239-foot Yalla , or stunning, high-tech interior of its most recent launch, Cloud 9 , show the range of the custom builder.

CRN’s current builds include a 260-foot tri-deck motor yacht, a pair of 203-footers with low superstructures and vertical bows, and a 164-foot Superconero , a modern version of the 1970s SuperConero that defined CRN. Ferretti has invested about $10 million to upgrade the Ancona yard, with plans to invest another $15 million.

Baglietto Shipyard

Baglietto is one of Italy’s most revered yacht names, having started in 1840 when Pieto Baglietto built small wooden fishing boats in his backyard. The company built boats for kings and popes, and put the first combustion engine into an 80-foot yacht in 1906. After being rescued from bankruptcy by the Gavio Group, a multinational corporation owned by a yacht-loving family, Baglietto has experienced a renaissance. Both its production facility, which gained a $25 million facelift, and model line, ranging from 43 to 230 feet, are now state of the art.

Francesco Paszkowski, Italy’s most revered yacht designer, does the lion’s share of design for Baglietto, but the builder recently unveiled other concepts by Milan-based Hot Lab and Santa Maria Magnolfi for its midrange superyachts. Baglietto is offering these very different designs on five proven hull platforms. Its 230-foot flagship is from Mulder Design in the Netherlands.

Rossinavi Aurora

Rossinavi ’s recent launches are some of the most inspired designs in the superyacht world. The 2017 launches, 160-foot  Endeavour II and 161-foot  Aurora , are as different in design as chalk and cheese. The yard worked with Achille Salvagn i on both interiors. Salvagni, known for his stylized residential interiors and whimsical decor, brought a fresh sensibility to both yachts that gave them very distinct personalities.

Last year, the yard launched two more inimitable yachts, 206-foot  Utopia IV and 161-foot  Flying Dagger . Utopia IV is unique among superyachts because of its top end of 33 knots, with transatlantic range. Always on the lookout for new ideas, Rossinavi has unveiled concepts with Pininfarina, designer of many Ferrari models, and the Phantom 62, a sleek, futuristic design by Enrico Gobbi.

Sanlorenzo Superyacht Yard

With headquarters in Ameglia and other yards in Viareggio, Massa, and La Spezia, Sanlorenzo is ranked among the top three builders of yachts over 80 feet. In the last two years it has introduced a 118-foot planing yacht, a 210-foot 64Steel (due out this year), the 171-foot custom Seven Sins —not to mention the flagship of its explorer line, the 164-foot 500EXP Ocean Dreamwalker III , which it launched at the last Monaco Yacht Show . The light-blue steel hull shows the style that Sanlorenzo gives to each new launch.

The Perini name extends across a succession of groundbreaking yachts from 289-foot  Maltese Falcon , which had a DynaRig sail plan that was designed from a theory, to the ultimate blue-water cruiser, the 229-foot  Sybaris , through to the flagship of Monaco’s 2017 show, the 1 97-foot  Seven .

Since a management restructuring in 2017, Perini Navi has introduced multiple new lines , including its E-volution sailing yacht series and three styles of motor yachts—Argonaut, Heritage, and Voyager. With two yards in Italy and a third in Turkey, Perini now has three sailing yachts under construction, including two 138-foot E-volutions. Its three motor achts under build include two Philippe Briand–designed 53 and 56 Voyagers, as well as its 82-foot hybrid-powered Eco-tender. The brand’s new energy promises a bright future.

When John and Robert Braithwaite started their fledgling boat business in 1969, the two brothers had no idea it would become one of the UK’s most important shipyards. Sunseeker is different from most yards on this list because it builds only in composites up to 155 feet.

Prompted by owner demand, Sunseeker is now venturing into aluminum with its new 161 Yacht. Easily recognized by Sunseeker’s exterior design cues, the 161 will be built by Icon Yachts in Holland. “We are combining the metal build expertise of ICON with our design DNA, technical expertise, and market know-how,” says Sean Robertson, president of Sunseeker USA, adding the new yacht will “absolutely” be a Sunseeker. The 161 will be launched in 2021.

Princess Yachts

Princess Yachts is the other British builder that continues to evolve in interesting, new ways. Established in Plymouth in 1965, Princess has grown into multiple modern production sites measuring more than 1.1 million square feet. Situated in a port with maritime ties that date back centuries, Princess’s South Yard, where the M Class superyachts are built, is a former 17th-century naval yard.

The Princess flagship, the 131-foot 40M Imperial Princess, seems like a larger superyacht, with large interior volume and unusual natural light. The yard also makes a 30M (98 foot LOA) and 35M (115 foot LOA).

Its most exciting launch was the R35, a 35-footer designed by Pininfarina, with a foil system that reduces drag by 30 percent. Princess plans to add the foil design to its larger yachts, an innovation that could revolutionize yachting.

Royal Huisman

Established in 1884, Royal Huisman is one of the oldest shipyards in Holland but one of its most modern. Its waterside facility in Vollenhove totals about 350,000 square feet, with four heated bays to accommodate yachts up to 266 feet. It has another facility in Amsterdam and a third in Emden, with facilities for yachts up to 394 feet. Its fleet of famous sailing superyachts include Gliss, Antares, Hyperiod, Hanuman, Elfie, and Arcadia . Its recent launches include the 190-foot  Ngoni , which has one of the most eclectic interiors ever, and the more classic 184-foot  Aquarius . Though best known for custom sailboats, the yard is currently working on Project Phi, a 180-foot motor yacht designed by Van Ooosannen Naval Architects.

Nautor’s Swan

Finnish builder Nautor’s Swan , founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkyla, has always had its sights on building high-performance sailing yachts with beautiful wood interiors. Koskenkyla enlisted Sparkman & Stephens, designer for many winning America’s Cup yachts, to create its first fiberglass boat. The new boats saw instant racing success.

The builder eventually partnered with German Frers Design. The Frers team, working with 30 Swan designers, is responsible for many innovative designs, including the first Swan 115 S introduced in 2015 at the Monaco show. The 115 was the flagship of the its Maxi division, which includes the Swan 98 , and eventually became the Swan 120.

Nautor’s Swan expanded beyond its historical plant in Kallby in 2002, when it opened a new high-tech facility in Pietarsaari for yachts from 60 to 115 feet. Its Kronoby facility produces its famous wood interiors. The most noteworthy yard in Finland has produced 2,000 Swans since it launched operations.

Westport's shipyard in Port Angeles, Washington.

Westport Yachts

Westport Yachts has been North America’s most prolific superyacht builder since it began building boats in 1969. Its facilities in Westport and Port Angeles, Washington, include enclosed spaces of 170,000 and 100,00 square feet, respectively, with a separate 80,000-square-foot cabinet shop and 4,100-square-foot upholstery shop. Westport has launched more than 140 yachts.

Westport’s success lies in its disciplined approach to yacht building, which involves a production mentality that keeps each build on time and on budget. The builder uses leading-edge machinery, proven coring materials, and components like MTU and Caterpillar engines, Northern Lights generators, and Furuno electronics that bring quality and consistency to the build process.

Its line of the W112, W125, W130 and W164 are contemporary but not ostentatious, with high levels of fit and finish across the yacht. That type of production mentality, which allows for a certain degree of customization, means the yachts are built to the same high standards.

Westport clients appreciate that level of reliability, not to mention resale value, when it comes to yacht ownership.

Delta Marine

Delta Marine is not given much to self-promotion, but the Seattle yard shares the same type of pedigree as many of the top European builders.

Delta Marine Invictus.

Its production quality, skilled labor, and proven ability to turn intricate, complex designs into beautiful, custom superyachts has earned it a place among the world’s top builders. The yard comprises a 25-acre complex in Seattle, with 300,000 square feet of manufacturing space in its state-of-the-art facility. With Boeing headquarters just down the road, and Seattle being a leading tech center, the trickle-down influence on the shipyard is noteworthy. Its collection of custom yachts includes 216-foot  Invictus , 164-foot  Arianna , and 240-foot  Laurel . Recently, an unnamed 204-foot launch was seen on sea trials near the yard.

Overmarine Mangusta El Leon superyacht

The Overmarine Group’s Mangusta brand has been known for speed during its 34-year-history. The Balducci family defined their niche, though the range has expanded to maxi open yachts and long-range yachts. The line extends from 94 to 215 feet LOA, with 300 yachts produced over the years. Its Mangusta Maxi Open series, ranging from 94 to 215 feet, offers speed as well as quietness and stability, in a stylish package. Its 50M (164-footer) is considered an industry icon. The Mangusta Oceano are long-range yachts with ranges up to 5,000 miles.

The Mangusta GranSports are a combination of the two lines, fast-displacement yachts capable of covering long distances. The group has 10 production facilities in Tuscany and Viareggio, Massa, and Pisa that total around two million square feet of indoor and exterior space. It has two wharfs in Viareggio where it does the final work on its yachts. Overmarine is vertically integrated, from the initial design to making the molds, to installing the electronics. The company celebrated a milestone in December: Its Gransport El Leon  (shown above) crossed the Atlantic, the first Mangusta to ever accomplish that feat.

Southern Wind

This 25-year-old builder has design offices in Italy and a modern yard in Johannesburg, South Africa, where it builds advanced composite sailing yachts from 82 to 115 feet in length. Over the years, it has worked with renowned sailing yacht designers, Farr Yacht, Reichel/Pugh, and Nauta Design. Most launches are semi-custom projects built on proven running surfaces, giving the owner the choice to customize interior and exterior. Southern Wind ’s most  recent launch is SW105 Kiboko Tres , the second of its performance cruiser series. Designed for offshore sailing but with the comforts of a superyacht, Kiboko Tres passed the ultimate sea trial: 7,000 miles from Johannesburg to Italy, on its way from the shipyard to the offices in Italy.

Christensen Yachts Chasseur

Christensen

Rare among superyacht builders, Christensen Yachts does virtually all of its work in house. The Vancouver, Washington–based yard has its own metal department for completing stainless handrails, stairways, anchor pockets, and other custom pieces, as well as a stone shop for marble, onyx, quartz, granite, and limestone used in the inlaid floors, countertops, and panels; and shops for woodworking, painting, and upholstery. Vertical integration allows the yard to deliver exceptional details for its yachts, which run up to 164 feet. Christensen’s Chasseur won top award in its category in the 2017 International Superyacht Society, in part for the intricate interior.

Summer 2024 luxury yacht charter: Top 5 Eastern Mediterranean destinations

Summer 2024 luxury yacht charter: Top 5 ...

  • Yacht Charter Locations >

European yacht charters are growing in popularity for the more experienced charterer - even when leaving aside the most popular Mediterranean counties. Anyone on a yacht charter holiday in the British Isles or Europe will experience great cultural and scenic variety. There are yacht charter operators in England, Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Holland, Sweden and Norway, to name a few. There are also yacht charter locations for every level of skill, experience and budget from the shallow east coast of England to the rugged highlands of Scotland and the soaring fjords of Norway. Scotland can sometimes be tranquil and sometimes rugged; Britain can be sometimes busy and sometimes deserted; Brittany can be sometimes sunny and sometimes rainy. No matter what you desire you will no-doubt encounter a concentration of history and culture.

Europe is one of the world's seven continents. Europe stretches from the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, to the Ural and Caucasus Mountains in the east where is it 'divided' from Asia. Europe is bordered by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Caspian Sea, Black Sea and connected waterways to the southeast.

‘Europe’ therefore does include countries that borders with the Western Mediterranean Sea such as the popular yacht destinations of Spain, France and Italy, however these well developed yachting destinations found in Southern Europe are discussed in more detail under the Western Mediterranean yacht charter section .

Northern Europe has all the main types of yacht charters available in the United Kingdom (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales) Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) Germany and Russia, including motor, sailing, skippered, crewed yachts, catamaran, power boat, sailboat, luxury yachts and motor yachts. There are also more and more superyachts that visit the area, available for charter including explorer yachts or expedition yachts. Weather patterns make Northern Europe’s summer charter season shorter than that in the Mediterranean, which is why fewer luxury yachts tend to be permanently based in Northern European waters. Summer, from May to about September, is the main season and the best time to charter a yacht in Europe.

  • Scandinavia

Yacht chartering in Scandinavia offers charters the possibility to explore the regions mighty Norwegian fjords, un-crowded serenity and peaceful historic ports. Norway boasts beautiful glaciers, some of which actually tumble down from the mountains to meet the sea. Finland’s famous energetic capital city Helsinki is also on the water and displays an artistically rich artistic cultural center. The magical cruising areas of Sweden reveal a tapestry of glistening lakes neat and vibrant cities, whilst Denmark’s Jutland peninsula is another magical location.Time spent on a luxury yacht charters in Scandinavia are relaxed and slowly paced, as the summer months provide more than 20 hours of sunlight each day so there is simply no reason to rush through the spectacular environment.

The peaceful allure of Scandinavia is a stark contrast to the colourful chaos of Mediterranean life: Snow-capped mountains meet with ancient fjords and waterfalls tumble from streams high above. Holiday makers on a luxury yacht charter will uncover nations in beautiful balance with the present and past, where castle ruins meet with cycle paths and hiking trails that connect into the town centres.

Sunbathing opportunities are easy to come across, and for those groups full of energy that want to spend all day looking around the museums, galleries, churches and castles during opening hours before trying out all the water toys, then the summer months with 20-hour days will fulfil your desires.

Norway, Europe

United Kingdom

The United Kingdom which includes England, Ireland Scotland and Wales is a famous and ancient yachting location. England, a place of sailing tradition has of the world's most important and longest running sailing regattas including the Fastnet and the Around the Island Races. The America’s Cup began here, but there are also new sailing races in and around the Solent, such as the 2012 J Class classic sailing events.

An Ireland yacht charter offers numerous marinas, ports and local pubs where you can sample some Guinness share a laugh and hear a song. Admire the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the oldest yacht club in the world, Bantry Bay and Oysterhaven harbor. An area of outstanding natural beauty, Scotland’s west coast embodies intrigue and mystic with mist-shrouded lochs as well as atmospheric port towns. While a yacht charter up the North Wales coastline provides dramatic scenery, wildlife and hidden coves. Anglesey and the North Wales coast is becoming an increasingly popular location for yachting and chartering and offers a variety of unspoiled beaches, sheltered anchorages and marinas within comfortable cruising distance.

Most tourists know of London and Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-Upon-Avon, but few have cruised along the winding coastline to witness the patchwork hills of East Anglia, or the rugged, rocky shores of Scotland that are home to puffins, seals and whales. Charming villages, grandiose castles and impressive country homes are all within easy reach of the beaches and coves, which are excellent in themselves for water sports and Scuba diving on an adventure holiday.

A luxury yacht charter is one of the best ways to explore this island nation, as a journey inland can easily be achieved in a couple of hours.

Visit the atmospheric old harbours and Victorian piers, hike along trails through National Parks and discover the different accents and cultures of each region. Devon and Cornwall are a favourite scenic trip for dramatic coastlines containing fossil-lined cliffs and picturesque lighthouses, while the stone circles of Wales have always attracted the inquisitive.

The coastal towns of the south have plenty of shopping opportunities, from high end luxury goods to factory outlet bargains. There is also plenty of opportunity to join a concert, go to the theatre or join in with a local festival.

The Baltic Sea

Germany & Russia

Germany and the Baltic Sea has a yachting history dating back to ancient seafarers. This is contrasted with an area which now, in modern times, is the birth place of some of the world’s most important superyachts by shipyards like Lurssen, Abeking & Rasmussen and Blohm & Voss. Island groups in the Baltic Sea provide a variety of seaside towns and villages to visit, as well as picturesque landscapes far off the beaten track. Russia has also seen some yacht charters over the last few years. St. Petersburg is the cultural capital of Russia and few cities showcase as many art galleries, concert halls, museums and theaters that can compare.

Head off the beaten track and discover some of Germany's hidden gems along the north coast in the Baltic Sea. National parks are nestled between scenic villages, where modern buildings blend with centuries of history to create a tranquil setting for guests to take in at their leisure.

The Baltic Sea is home to some of the most prestigious superyacht shipyards in the world and as you cruise through you might be one of the first to see a brand new luxury yacht undergoing sea trials in preparation for delivery to their new owner.

To the east, St Petersburg is one of Russia's most iconic locations and as a culture capital, charter groups have plenty of indoor and outdoor exhibitions to discover to the backdrop of broad canals and brightly coloured spires. This world-class destination offers the awe-inspiring Museum Complex St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Peterhof Grand Palace and the State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace, which is filled with the works from the Masters.

EUROPE Yacht Charter Enquiry

Hi Amanda, The boat was great. The staff were too. Marin in particular. He was super knowledgeable and we felt in good hands. I'd say that maybe a very slight comment is that a Croatian crew and cooking etc is always going to be a little more "Eastern European" than, say an Italian crew. This is not to say it was lacking, just a little different and perhaps requires a little more communication. Thanks for everything. Was really a wonderful holiday I'd love to do a boat trip again. European / Mediterranean Superyacht Season

Europe and more specifically, the Mediterranean is the most populated sea in the yachting world and is busiest during the summer months (April – September). The Mediterranean Sea is the body of water that separates Europe, Africa and Asia and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by a narrow passage called the Straits of Gibraltar. The Med has amazing infrastructure, shipyards, marinas and yachting services and is therefore also a very popular place for yachts and crew to remain during winter months.

Finding a Superyacht Job in Europe / The Med:

The best time of the year to find a job is either side of the season, directly before or immediately after. Boats generally tend to crew up for the Mediterranean season in April and May and they may then hire crew again before crossing to their next seasonal destination, the most popular of which, is the Caribbean and usually occurs in September-November. Many vessels will base themselves in the south of France, Italy and Spain. Antibes and Palma de Mallorca are therefore the most common places for crew to base themselves and find jobs.

Cruising in the Med:

The Med is mostly surrounded by land which is one of the many factors that make it an ideal cruising area for yachts. It is generally well-protected, is non-tidal and boasts crystal clear water and some of the best beaches in the world. Additionally, Europe is rich in culture and a Mediterranean season will involve stopping off at some of the greatest cities in the world. As a crew member, time off will be limited in the summer months, however, you are likely to be fortunate enough to briefly experience a few of the amazing cities and attractions that Europe has to offer. Whether its partying in Ibiza, exploring the French Riviera, enjoying a beach bar in Greece or wandering the streets of Turkey and Croatia, you are sure to have an amazing time with any downtime you may get in Europe.

As a crew member, the job varies slightly in the Med compared to other seasonal destinations. In the summer months Europe experiences long hours of daylight and the sun can set as late as 21h30. Guests therefore (generally) tend to be slower in the morning and to go to bed later. It is also common to spend many nights in port as guests want to experience the vibrant cultures, cities and ports and often eat ashore. The type of guests you have onboard in Europe may also vary, unlike areas such as the Caribbean, South Pacific, etc. where guests are most likely on board to get away from other yachts and enjoy nature and activities like diving, snorkelling and fishing. The Mediterranean lacks marine life and is densely populated with yachts. The guests tend to prefer a higher level of service here and the deck crew can expect countless tender runs to and from shore.

Winter Months:

The med season begins to slow down in September. Many yacht crew members are hired on a seasonal basis and their employment contracts will come to an end. Others will prepare to take the vessel to their next seasonal destination and some may remain on board the yacht for a winter yard (maintenance) period. There is a lot of crew turnover during this stage of the year and is a good time to find employment.

If you are employed on a yacht that remains in Europe for the winter, your work will vary greatly from the summer months. There is a good chance the boat will be hauled out the water onto the dry dock at some stage as well (possibly for the whole period, depending on the scope of work to be done). It is highly unlikely you will have guests on board and everything will be covered and stowed away for the winter months. The yacht will undergo maintenance and alterations during this period. It is a very busy time for engineers who will focus on scheduled maintenance, repairing breakages and faults that may have occurred during the season, and making improvements to onboard machinery and systems. The deck department will focus on maintenance (varnishing, polishing, painting) as well as inventory and season orders. The interior will focus on inventories, stain treatments, ordering, polishing and deep cleaning.

The off-season is also a good time to train and rest crew. It is likely that hours will be 08:00 – 17:00 and that you will have weekends off, provided you are not on watch. The winter months can be an amazing experience for crew members if you enjoy the colder, wetter weather. There tends to be a more relaxed atmosphere on board with ‘normal’ work hours in place and more downtime. Having weekends off allows you to explore the area you are in, or even possibly take a few days off for a skiing trip. It will also provide deck and engine room crew members with invaluable yard experience, which will stand them in good stead for their careers.

Visas and Legal Requirements:

Visa requirements vary depending on your nationality and role on board. Schengen visas are necessary for all non-European and non-British crew. It can be obtained from the embassy of your first point of entry into Europe and allows you to move freely between all the European countries that form part of the Schengen area. However, the amount of days you are allowed in the Schengen area varies depending on your nationality, contract, yacht policies etc.

It is common for Schengen visa holders to be stamped onto the vessel and out of the Schengen zone to freeze their allocation of days in Europe. In this instance crew will not be allowed to leave the area in which the yacht is located. It is therefore essential to ensure that you consult with your captain/yacht agent or visa specialists to ensure you have the correct visas, are working legally and know your restrictions.

Montenegro remains one of Europe’s best-kept secrets and there's no surprise why. From its wild beauty filled showcasing UNESCO World Heritage Sites to its glistening islands that float against mountains, it is a yachting epicentre away from the crowds.

Montenegro, the jewel of the Eastern Mediterranean offers a mystic charm like no where else. From lively Tivat, an iconic region defined by its superyacht hub to the quiet corners of the fishing village of Perast, it takes superyacht owners from glitz and glamour to an ancient world, all cradled by dramatic mountain landscapes. Beyond its beauty, the Bay of Kotor is also the perfect gateway to the Eastern Mediterranean, and the region the ultimate home port for weeks of exploration.

Ancient Charm  Beyond the iconic port of Kotor, and Tivat's modern marina facilities is the ancient charm of the region. From the ancient walls of Kotor that feel plucked from a postcard, to Ostrog Monastery perched in the hilltops, its Balkan beauty is evident at every corner, as well as its colourful history.  Escape to the magical landmarks such as Our Lady of the Rocks, an islet was made over the centuries by local seamen, or take a historic delve into the region's Naval History Museum, where you can learn about the rich heritage of its nautical past, each and every corner marks a bygone era of dazzling allurement. The isle of Sveti Stefan is a glitzy world away from reality. Once a playground for movie stars of the 1950's, today, it invites superyacht travellers to privacy and seclusion, all wrapped up in East Mediterranean hospitality.

Medieval Beauty Meets Modern Nightlife  The medieval city of Budva is an example of Montenegro's historic facade. However dig a little deeper and you can find a wealth of galleries, churches, cafes, restaurants and luxury boutiques shadowed by its historic walls. Boasting some of the best crystalline beaches on the Montenegro coastline, the city is a summer paradise for superyacht travellers, with quieter crowds than it's neighbouring regions. While visiting the region's iconic Tivat marina, a calendar of enviable events, superyacht parties and headlining entertainers transform the region to a glittering hub of sophistication.

Nature's Gift The wild beauty of Montenegro is one of its most treasured gifts. From Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the old town of Ulcinj, the region's natural beauty and ancient history has remained critically acclaimed to this day. Whether hiking its striking grey mountains, or becoming lost in the flora and fauna of Biogradska Gora National Park, its enchanted forestry and mesmerising walkways are perfect for intrepid adventurers.

US is imposing more than 500 new sanctions on Russia’s war machine, indicts Russian businessmen

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Treasury Department plans to impose more than 500 new sanctions on Russia and its war machine on Friday as the U.S. vows to keep up its financial pressure on Moscow with the war entering its third grueling year.

The sanctions represent the largest single tranche of penalties since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022. They come on the heels of a series of new arrests and indictments announced by the Justice Department on Thursday that target Russian businessmen, including the head of Russia’s second-largest bank, and their middlemen in five separate federal cases.

The Biden administration is seeking to demonstrate its unwavering support for Ukraine, even though Republican lawmakers allied with former President Donald Trump are blocking vital additional U.S. military aid.

The White House had promised major sanctions in response to the death last week of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most prominent critic, opposition leader Alexei Navalny, in an Arctic penal colony. Biden said Thursday after meeting with Navalny’s wife and daughter that the sanctions would be “against Putin, who is responsible for his death.”

(AP Photo/Dmitri Lovetsky)

The planned sanctions were previewed by two administration officials who spoke on condition of anonymity before their release on Friday. Additional sanctions are expected from the State Department as well.

Thousands of sanctions have already been imposed on Russian officials, businessmen, banks, companies and entire industries since the start of the war.

Out of the Justice Department, the cases announced Thursday include charges unsealed in New York against sanctioned Russian banker Andrei Kostin and “two of his U.S.-based facilitators.” The facilitators, Vadim Wolfson and Gannon Bond, were arrested Thursday.

Kostin, the longtime president of state-owned VTB Bank, is charged with engaging in a scheme to evade sanctions and launder money to support two superyachts. He, along with the two others, is also accused of trying to evade sanctions by concealing his ownership of a home in Aspen, Colorado. The indictment says Wolfson and Bond arranged to sell the house and provide Kostin with about $12 million from the sale.

Michael Khoo, a co-director of the department’s Task Force KleptoCapture, said on a call with reporters that the announcement was meant to send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that “we’re not going away” and “we can play the long game as well” so long as the war continues.

The KleptoCapture task force enforces the economic restrictions within the U.S. imposed on Russia and its billionaires.

The Justice Department says over the past two years it has secured court orders for the restraint, seizure, and forfeiture of nearly $700 million in assets and has charged more than 70 people with violating sanctions and export controls.

The United States has been able to transfer more than $5 million of seized Russian assets to Europe in support of Ukraine’s defense, U.S. officials said Thursday. But the process of justifying each confiscation of alleged illicit assets in court is a painstaking one by law, playing out over years.

“The Justice Department is more committed than ever to cutting off the flow of illegal funds that are fueling Putin’s war and to holding accountable those who continue to enable it,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement.

The U.S. and other allies of Ukraine had hoped to cripple and isolate Russia’s economy with a succession of sanctions targeting its financial sector and sources of revenue, including oil sales. But Putin has worked with Iran and others to blunt the impact of the international sanctions, so that the International Monetary Fund reports Russia’s economy growing at an unexpectedly healthy pace.

Also Thursday, an indictment was unsealed in Washington, D.C., charging Vladislav Osipov with bank fraud connected to operating a 255-foot luxury yacht owned by sanctioned Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg . Osipov, a Russian national, lives in Switzerland. The State Department has offered a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to his arrest or conviction.

The indictment identifies the superyacht as the Tango, the first belonging to a sanctioned Russian with close ties to the Kremlin to be seized at the request of the U.S. government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In Florida, Serhiy Kurchenko, a sanctioned pro-Russian Ukrainian metals magnate, was indicted for trying to evade sanctions that prevent him from doing business in the United States. He and Kostin are believed to be in Moscow and thus unlikely to face U.S. justice.

Also in Florida, a civil forfeiture complaint was filed against two luxury condos in Bal Harbour owned by sanctioned Russian businessman Viktor Perevalov, the co-owner of a Russia-based construction company that was sanctioned for building a highway in Crimea, a Ukrainian peninsula that Russia seized in 2014.

And in Georgia, Feliks Medvedev pleaded guilty earlier this month to helping launder over $150 million on behalf of Russian clients through bank accounts he controls. Medvedev, a Russian citizen, lives in Buford, Georgia.

Bob explained what companies in the industry could do to survive and what they should focus on so that the sales of these companies will boom after the pandemic. That became reality. Sales of new yachts have practically doubled in 2021 compared to 2020 and reached an all-time high.

19-year-old Cole Brauer is in second place in the Global Solo Challenge

You’ve probably never heard of The Global Solo Challenge that began when dozens of solo sailors departed A Coruña, Spain on budget-friendly, environmentally conscious boats last August. So, you probably had no clue that Frenchman Philippe Delamare just “won” the race to be the first competitor to complete a solo-non-stop-circumnavigation of the world by the three great capes after spending an incredible 147 days at sea. And you probably had no idea that he finished the race as a winter storm battered the Spanish coast where the fleet started from back in August either.

Philippe Delamare won the Global Solo Challenge after sailing non-stop around the world for just ... [+] over 147 days!

But now you do. The truth is, the Global Solo Challenge is way more than “just” another long-distance sailboat race. And the 29-year-old American woman Cole Brauer (who’s currently in second place) is way more than just another sailboat racer. In fact, she has less than 2,000 miles to go. And every mile she sails brings her closer to becoming the first American female in history to complete a solo, nonstop, circumnavigation by the three great capes. And if all goes well, she’ll enter an elite club of less than 200 sailors who have accomplished the same feat.

Cole Brauer is in second place in the Global Solo Challenge

And if you happen to be looking for a pure-feel-good-escape-story to provide a welcome distraction from your normal social media doom-scrolling, I highly recommend following her progress @colebraueroceanracing as she sails the final 1,500 miles north to the finish line.

Seastate is going further to the beam so slightly less slammy! Things are looking up! These 10 days to the finish are going to be incredibly tough but trying to appreciate every single day I have left!”

19-year-old Cole Brauer is currently in second place in the Global Solo Challenge

Her valentines day post speaks for itself. “This Valentines Day I am dedicating it to all the dream chasing, scream singing, grab life by the throat bada$$ women who never fit into the cookie cutter type of flowers and a box of chocolates. Cheers to all of you🧡”

And here, Cole draws the attention of her 419,000 instagram followers to an organization that means a lot to her. “Thank you so much for the people who have already donated into @safesailorg. I can’t thank you enough 🙏 One of my passions is shaping a positive and inclusive culture in the Sport of Sailing. Let’s work together to make our sailing community a safe and respectful space for everyone.”

But her story is just one of many from this wonderfully approachable event that reminds me that the world is bigger, and more exciting, and more inspiring than we often see on the mainstream media in an election year!

Ronnie Simpson's entry in the Global Solo Challenge was dismasted in the southern ocean

American Ronnie Simpson had rounded cape Horn and was ¾’s the way around the world when he suffered a dismasting in the notoriously dangerous southern ocean. And while he was heartbroken to retire from the race—and be rescued from his damaged boat—he also is a wonderful example of grit, determination, and human endurance that this wonderfully adventurous event brings out of competitors and inspires in fans.

“I was trying to slow the boat down, but given our reachy angle she wanted to go hull speed (9 knots) even under storm sails. Down below on my bunk, I anxiously stared at an instrument display and watched our numbers and navigation – popping up frequently to make trim and course adjustments – when we launched off of a wave. Sailing over a crossed-up triangular launch ramp in 30 gusting 40 knot winds, Shipyard Brewing launched hard off a wave. I felt it down below and grabbed the sides of my bunk to brace for the upcoming impact. Bang. Shipyard Brewing slammed down and a split-second later I heard some bad noises on deck and the boat began to flatten out. Something had clearly let go”

Simpson with some of the crew that rescued him in the Southern Ocean.

He's been dismasted and that ended the race for him. But I’m pretty sure this in not the end of his solo racing career. “Starting with an old, funky boat and no money, I managed to get to the starting line and become a viable American contender in a solo around the world race,” he said in his final blog post. “I fought for the win for the first half and fought for a podium the second half, before dismasting more than 3/4 of the way around the world and after the three Capes. I had a road map back to Europe and was looking at 3rd, or at worst, 4th place out of 16 starters and some 60 original entries.”

The Voith Inline Thruster (VIT) for yachts.

Let’s begin by paying homage to the Bombardier Global 6000, among the most perfect forms of transportation ever created. How perfect? This private aircraft is nearly 100 feet long. It costs $62 million new. It has a range of 6,000 nautical miles, meaning it can fly nonstop from Aspen to London or New York to Moscow. It holds as many as 17 passengers in luscious club seats, never loses internet connectivity, and can be configured with a bedroom and full shower. It’s basically Air Force One without the president.

The Bombardier website, in fact, makes repeated references to an aircraft that befits “a head of state.” It’s the jet that whisked Taylor Swift from Tokyo back to the United States to watch her boyfriend win the Super Bowl.

But perhaps the ultimate seal of approval for the Bombardier Global 6000 comes not from any global leader or the most popular musical performer alive, but from someone slightly less known but no less discerning. It is the private jet that Steward Health Care Chief Executive Officer Ralph de la Torre has chosen to fly around the world.

Yes, that’s right. De la Torre, the proud owner of a $40 million, 190-foot superyacht and the most sophisticated sportfish boat ever built (cost: more than $15 million), is cruising the skies in one of the biggest and most luxurious private jets that money can buy — in this case, Steward’s money.

Ralph de la Torre.

And lest anyone think that I’m going to make the same mistake twice and miss a jet, I can definitively report that Ralph de la Torre likes things in pairs. Steward also operates a second private plane, a Dassault Falcon 2000LX that can easily soar nonstop from Boston to Europe with as many as a dozen passengers in ultra-luxury. Not to put too fine a point on it, but having a Falcon 2000LX as a spare jet is like having a Bentley as the beater you take to the town dump.

You, like me, might be wondering why a for-profit health care system with particularly fragile hospitals often located in low income communities might choose to spend tens of millions of dollars to own and operate two fabulously luxurious private jets, especially when the company is headquartered in a major airline hub like Dallas that has nonstop flights to virtually any destination that any normal person would want or need to go.

First, though, it’s worth noting that Steward didn’t seem particularly eager to have the public know about these jets. They were registered with the Federal Aviation Administration under the name of an aviation holding company called TVPX. That company, with offices in Concord, Mass., and North Salt Lake City, declares on its website that it creates trusts for airplane owners who “want to avoid unwanted public or media attention.” How did that one work out?

Fortunately, a kind person sent me the tail number to the Bombardier. That tail number opened all sorts of doors in the vast and fanatical private aviation community on the World Wide Web. One door showed that there was a second plane, another revealed a second ownership entity, yet another showed that a Steward executive and board member was affiliated with that other company, Management Health Services. Bottom line: Even Steward representatives didn’t push back on the notion that they fund both planes.

The thought did strike me that maybe de la Torre and his executive team were using these planes to embark on critical missions to deliver desperately needed supplies to his chain of woefully under-resourced hospitals. These jets are so sophisticated you can picture an airdrop of medicines and equipment at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center before they whooshed away to another city and another hospital in need.

So I sought the flight records for these planes to confirm that this was the case. Steward didn’t seem to make this easy, either, but a very accommodating gentleman affiliated with a strikingly informative aviation site, FlightRadar24 , was there to help. Within a day or two, I had a file in my email with every takeoff and landing for each plane in the past two-plus years.

Hmmm. Does Steward have hospitals in Santorini, Corfu, Athens, Naples (Italy, not Florida, but Florida, too), Madrid, Rome, Croatia, and the French Riviera? Or did an eager mariner simply need a ride to his yacht? What about the Bahamas, St. Kitts, Cabo San Lucas, Providenciales, Montego Bay, St. Maarten, and Antigua? And then there were all these flights to Panama and Ecuador, where I recently reported that his superyacht, the Amaral, had been moored. Coincidence?

There is no evidence that de la Torre was on all of these flights, because the planes are apparently available to other executives as well. But seriously, the staffs of Travel & Leisure and the Robb Report don’t spend this much time hurtling toward exotic destinations.

Here, I repeat a sincere and necessary caveat. This is not a screed against wealthy people with mansions and planes and very large boats. But that kind of wealth is supposed to go to those who create something that other people want, not a bunch of scheming private equity partners and executives who dismantle something that so many people need. Hospitals are public trusts.

The cabin of a Bombardier Inc. Global 6000 business jet.

It’s an interesting question, and not an esoteric one, about when immoral actions spill into illegal ones. Governor Maura Healey used the word “criminal” earlier this week when she excoriated Steward for its management of its nine Massachusetts hospitals, and said she basically wanted them out of the state. There are people who can look at how federal money has been spent and where it’s gone, and hospitals, Steward especially, have federal money coming in every day. Are they?

But back to the unanswered question of why a hospital company like Steward needs a pair of ultra-luxury jets capable of zipping around the world. The painfully obvious answer is, it absolutely doesn’t.

It especially doesn’t need it when hospital staffs are getting cut, when medical equipment is getting repossessed , when so many vendors aren’t getting paid, and when the quality of health care that it delivers is unquestionably diminished because the many great doctors and nurses and technicians in these hospitals lack the staff support they need and sufficient supplies.

And all the while, de la Torre and his private equity friends at Cerberus Capital Management have been living high, sky high in de la Torre’s case, off the money they made when they wrung hundreds of millions of dollars from a hospital system in dire need of resources and care.

Two other quick points. The Global 6000 was acquired by the Steward-related holding companies in 2020. The company that had it before that, which apparently purchased it brand new: Medical Properties Trust, the Alabama-based REIT that bought the land and hospital buildings from Steward, in a series of transactions that allowed a few people to get very rich while leaving Steward with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual rent. It’s hard to know what to make of that.

And Thursday, after I’d been asking about the jets this week, a Steward spokeswoman, Josephine Martin, called to say that the two planes were now for sale. The Falcon, she said, had recently been put on the market. The Global 6000 was listed as of Thursday.

“It’s part of a reset for Steward, selling down assets and working to be a different kind of company,” Martin said.

Maybe that should provide some satisfaction. Still, certain images remain: Chaos on the ground at so many Steward hospitals, state officials trying to prevent a crisis if any of them close, while Ralph de la Torre soars above it all in a plane built for a king. When bills went unpaid and cuts were made on personnel and supplies, there was always plenty of money for the jets.
