RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam

Full details of the exam syllabus and requirements are shown in the RYA Yachtmaster Scheme Syllabus and Logbook (G158) available from the webshop (see right).

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams can be taken under sail or power and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly. The candidate or a training centre provides the boat and the RYA provides an examiner. Note: All qualifying sea time and passages must be gained on vessels appropriate to the type of exam i.e. gained in sailing vessels for a sail exam and power vessels for a power exam.

There is no formal training course leading up to the exam, but those who have not previously taken RYA courses often find it useful to book themselves in for some informal training at an RYA centre prior to their exam. This training can be tailor-made to your specific needs and helps to fill any gaps in your knowledge that may become apparent.

The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.

Boats used for exams

You may use your own boat or a boat that you have chartered or borrowed. You will be responsible for ensuring the boat is seaworthy and suitable for the area in which the exam takes place and equipped as shown below.

The boat used must be between 7m and 18m (LOA) and be in sound, seaworthy condition, equipped to the standard set out in the RYA Boat Safety Handbook 2nd Edition (code G103). The boat must be equipped with a full up to date set of charts and navigational publications along with working instruments and either plotter or GPS. In addition to the candidate there should be two crew on board as the examiner will not take part in the management of the boat during the exam.

There may be vessels that will meet the guidelines outlined above but by virtue of their layout, construction, handling characteristics or other factors may be unsuitable for use for an RYA Yachtmaster Practical examination. The RYA reserves the right to refuse an exam on a vessel that, in the view of the RYA Chief Examiner, will not allow the examiner to conduct an examination to the standard required by the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Qualification Panel.

Before you book your exam please check that you:

  • can provide a boat
  • have completed the required mileage and experience as skipper
  • hold an SRC (Short Range Certificate) or higher level GMDSS radio operators qualification
  • hold a valid first aid certificate
  • have read the syllabus in RYA Logbook (G158)
  • have read and comply with the pre-requisites above.

  • GPS set (may be hand held)
  • tide tables
  • pilotage information for the local area, eg pilot books, port information etc
  • plotting instruments.
  • Photographic ID card or document, such as a passport or driving licence

Local news | surfside-sunset sand replenishment project complete, but short of goal.

yachtmaster offshore palma

A Sunset Beach-Surfside sand replenishment project aimed at providing a needed supply to north Orange County’s eroding beaches came up short, providing about a third less sand than expected.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project that kicked off in mid-December was able to deliver only 811,000 cubic yards of the 1.1 million cubic yards of expected sand, U.S Army Corps of Engineers spokesperson Dena O’Dell said in an email.

The $23 million project was spearheaded by the federal government, which provided 67%, or $15.5 million, of the cost of the project, but was also a collaboration between local cities, the county, the state and the Surfside Storm Water Tax District, which combined funds to pay for the rest.

Sand pumped on to Surfside Beach from a barge two miles offshore as part of the Surfside-Sunset & Newport Beach Sand Renourishment Project in Seal Beach, CA, on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. (Photo by Jeff Gritchen, Orange County Register/SCNG)

Already, the project had shrunk in size due to higher-than-expected costs. What was originally proposed as a 1.75 million cubic yards project was chopped to 1.2 million cubic yards, with about 100,000 cubic yards used from a borrow site in Newport Beach and put on West Newport’s beaches as part of the project.

The Surfside-Sunset project was taking longer than expected and an extension was needed, and approved, for the full amount of sand to be delivered by March 16, but the contractor had mechanical issues that required seven to 10 days of repairs, so the dredging operation concluded on Feb. 29, O’Dell said.

Also read: Army Corps of Engineers wants San Clemente to pay $2.6 million more for stalled sand project

The Army Corps of Engineers is working to see if the contractor can return in September to complete that $23 million project, but it is uncertain at this time, she said.

Army Corps of Engineers Project Manager Susie Ming said the project was impacted by winter storms that caused shutdowns and delays.

“They were not able to dredge as much as they wanted to,” she said.

The project couldn’t be extended any longer at this time because it had to move the equipment off of the sand because of the snowy plover season that runs from March to September.

The total cost for the project is still unknown and will be based on the final amount once it is calculated by the Army Corps and the contractor.

If the project does not continue in September, as is hoped, the Army Corps will only pay for the 811,000 cubic yards, or whatever the final amount ends up being. The unused funds, if the sediment amount is deemed less than the original contract once the project is finalized, would be returned to the project partners, Ming said.

The project is thought to have regional benefits , with expectations that sand will be pushed down the coast by currents and swells, depositing onto Bolsa Chica, Huntington Beach and toward Newport Beach, to provide a buffer between the ocean and infrastructure .

Assemblymember Diane Dixon, who advocated for the project to recieve federal funding, had not heard about the shortfall and called it “disappointing.”

“The need for this sand is critical. Consistent replenishment of our beaches is a commitment all levels of government need to make to ensure our coastline is protected. Our coastal cities depend on our beaches as a key driver of their local economy,” she said. “The economic impact is critical for our coastal cities. This is a priority for me.”

The Surfside-Sunset sand replenishment project is required by the Rivers & Harbors Act of 1962 to address the elimination of sediment by natural transport when ports were built and channels were concreted as flood mitigation infrastructure by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Navy in the ’40s and later.

The first beach nourishment project happened in 1964 and for decades was repeated every five to seven years, the last time in 2009.

When it was time for the next round, the need for federal funding stalled and delayed the project. In recent years, the lack of a replenishment was starting to show, with areas of Newport Beach and Bolsa Chica beach experiencing severe erosion and flooding as the ocean inched closer to streets, parking lots and homes.

Local and legislative leaders pushed to restart the project, and federal funds were approved for the project in 2022. The work got underway in December.
