Rae Ingram (Nicole Kidman) and her husband, John (Sam Neill), struggle to overcome the sudden death of their young son. In an attempt to move past their loss, the couple take their yacht out for an extended vacation trip. While far out at sea, they come across a sinking schooner and rescue the ship's sole survivor, Hughie Warriner (Billy Zane). Hughie claims the crew of the ship died from food poisoning. Though Rae is empathetic towards Hughie, John is suspicious of his story.

Critic Reviews for Dead Calm

Audience reviews for dead calm.

A cautionary tale about helping others stranded at sea. Introduced Nicole Kidman to Hollywood (and Tom Cruise).

nicole kidman film yacht

Everyone does alright in delivering the goods in this economical tale about being stuck in the middle of nowhere with a psycho who likes you. The question becomes: how long can it last?

'Dead Calm' is invariably similar to 'Ravenous' insofar as an isolated, seemingly impotent stranger is found adrift and recapitulates a macabre tale of survival when, in actuality, he is the perpetrator of the crimes. But 'Dead Calm' accelerates at an exponential rate due to the increasingly claustrophobic setting aboard the sailboat. Before we are submerged into the cat-and-mouse brinksmanship with Hughie, we are introduced to the saturnine backstory of how John and Rae are bereaved over their toddler son's death in a car accident (which is shown in assaultive, exploitative explicitness). Dean Semler's cinematography of The Great Barrier Reef is a portrait of seafaring mirages that harbors a sense of dread. The marital friction infuses the film with unease and we wholeheartedly sympathize that John adjudicates that an oceanic voyage would be a remedial exercise while Rae silently abhors it (she castigates the trip in her diary). At times, it feels stagy with the contrivances around being stranded on the boat but those instances are nugatory at best. 'Dead Calm is wickedly Hitchcockian entertainment with a brilliantly prickly performance by Zane who is a mannered basket-case of flinching body language until he exposes himself to be a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Rae Ingram: You know what I'd love for lunch? Fresh asparagus, then, um, pasta - angel hair pasta with heaps of basil, garlic, olive oil and, um, apple pie. Yeah. Uh, John, have you got a towel?  "In the middle of nowhere there is nowhere to hide." Wow, I've seen people talk this movie up as not only a great film, but as one of the better thrillers of the 80's. In order to have a good thriller, it is imperative that the film be thrilling. Dead Calm is not. It fails in just about everything it tries to do. There's no tension, no suspense. It is all underplayed to the point of boredom. How Phillip Noyce could fail to make this scary or in any way suspenseful is beyond me. First off, I should probably get my biggest gripe out of the way early, just as the movie does. It starts out with a stupid and pointless scene where we see that a married couple lost there son in a car accident. We see the accident, we go to the hospital, and we think that this is probably going to have something to do with the rest of the movie. Some how this is going to fit in. No, it really doesn't. I'll admit, I probably wouldn't have liked the movie anymore, had this beginning been taken out, but I would have respected it more. So after the death of their son, John and Rae go for a relaxing sail by themselves in their beautiful yacht. They've been out at sea for three weeks and haven't encountered another boat, until they see one of in the distance one morning. A man rows from that boat over to theirs and tells them that the rest of the crew was killed by canned salmon and that the ship is sinking. He lied, and when John finds out, the stranger flees with his wife. It sounds scary, it sounds entertaining, but it is not. I love Sam Neill and Nicole Kidman both, and a young Kidman is certainly nice to look at, but both aren't used to their capabilities. Then there's Billy Zane as the stranger. That is where everything goes extremely wrong. Zane overplays this role at times where he shouldn't and when his character should be going nuts, he's low key. I was never afraid of him once. It didn't matter that I knew what he did and what he was capable of. Zane just never created the tension his character needed to exhibit. A good setting and a worthy story are wasted in Dead Calm. I still can't comprehend how this went wrong, but it did. A complete disappointment from start to finish.

The key image of "Dead Calm" is of two ships drawing near each other in the middle of a vast, empty expanse of ocean. The emotions generated by this shot, near the beginning of the film, underlie everything that follows, making us acutely aware that help is not going to arrive from anywhere, that the built-in protections of civilization are irrelevant and that the characters will have to settle their own destinies.

On board a sailing yacht are a married couple who hope that the cruise will help them deal with the death of their son. On board the other ship - a sinking schooner - is a young man who seems to be the only survivor from a tragic incident of food poisoning. He jumps into a lifeboat and rows for his life toward the yacht, where he is taken aboard. The husband, curious, goes to inspect the schooner, leaving his wife alone with the castaway, who of course turns out to be a homicidal killer.

Almost the entire movie involves these three characters in a violent game of psychological strategy. Sam Neill stars as the husband, who is stranded on the sinking ship when the killer sails away. Nicole Kidman is the wife, who has to outsmart and outfight the madman. And Billy Zane is the killer, wild-eyed and off-balance. The plot splits into two for most of the movie, with the woman on board the yacht with the killer, while her husband finds himself trapped in the hold of the sinking ship with the water rapidly rising above nose level. The counterpoint is effective.

A plot like this is probably impossible without two ancient movie traditions, the Talking Killer and the Undead Dead. Time and again in the movie, the story would be over if someone - anyone - simply pulled the trigger. There is a moment when the wife temporarily has the upper hand against this madman who has assaulted and beaten her and left her husband to drown, and what does she do? She ties him up! And with the knot in front, too - where he can get at it. Later in the film, after he appears to be dead, he reappears, of course, and has to be fought a second time.

And yet "Dead Calm" generates genuine tension, because the story is so simple and the performances are so straightforward. This is not a gimmick film (unless you count the husband's method of escaping from the sinking ship), and Kidman and Zane do generate real, palpable hatred in their scenes together.

Note: The film is based on a 1963 novel by Charles Williams , which inspired an ill-fated Orson Welles project that was suspended in 1970 and then abandoned in 1973 with the death of his leading man, Laurence Harvey . I haven't read the novel, but the story is worthy of a robust craftsman like John D. MacDonald - all except for the unnecessary prologue in the hospital, which he would have junked.

  • Why I’m Wrong

A remarkable breakout for Nicole Kidman, who gives this feminist thriller everything it deserves, and more. She plays Rae Ingram, the young wife of a naval officer (Sam Neill) who has taken them on a quiet yachting trip to help process a recent tragedy. Rae isn’t so sure about this form of therapy and asks to cut the trip short, but her husband tells her, “When you’re strong we’ll go home.”

Bad decision, the first of many he’ll make. When the couple encounters a schooner adrift, they take aboard a jittery survivor named Hughie (Billy Zane). Without spoiling the details, I’ll just say that Rae eventually finds herself alone on the boat with Hughie, who isn’t exactly what he claimed.

Zane gives a doozy of a performance. Sweaty and oily – the better to help him physically channel the Marlon Brando of A Streetcar Named Desire – he’s constantly threatening to drag the picture into camp. Slipping in and out of lunacy, as if Hughie is momentarily oblivious to the menace he’s causing, Zane is more of an amusing presence than a threatening one.

It’s telling that Kidman can register so effectively in the face of Zane’s showboating.

It’s telling, really, that Kidman can register so effectively in the face of Zane’s showboating. She charts Rae’s transformation from helpless, grief-stricken woman to empowered heroine without pandering to caricature in either direction. She’s fully Rae – intense, alert, intelligent – in the first scene and the last. Dead Calm is, at heart, an awakening movie (it isn’t until Rae’s husband is quite literally set aside that she’s able to discover the strength she has within) and Kidman’s intimate performance makes this both an exterior and interior journey for the audience.

Credit is also due to director Phillip Noyce, who earned a Hollywood career on the strength of his work here. As Hughie and Rae play mind games on the yacht, Noyce’s camera races in and out of corridors and portholes as if it’s running through a hamster maze. Rather than emphasize the claustrophobia of the quarters, he chooses to play up the vessel’s many possibilities – an ingenious touch. Also effective is the decision to shoot most of the action on an eerily calm sea; there’s a latently sinister quality to the mirrored surface that no storm – including the one that appears near the end – could quite match.

I’m not sure we needed the over-the-top epilogue. Again, better not to spoil details, except to note that the sequence delivers a comical dose of comeuppance and also somewhat undercuts Dead Calm ’s feminist drive. It’s fun, I guess, but unnecessary. By this point Kidman had the movie well in hand.

One of the most significative expressions of modern yachting. Here are Stormvogel’s secrets, the main protagonist of the famous movie starring Nicole Kidman.

Still to this day , when I see it moored at the wharf, immobile, secured to the mooring ropes, I keep staring, scrutinizing the secrets,  parts and details that the Stormvogel, class of 1961 is made of. Non-conformist, anarchist, innovative, daring, elegant, aggressive. These are the first adjectives that came to mind the first time I laid eyes on it, and when I stepped foot onboard. The Stormvogel remains one of the most emblematic icons of modern yachting.

The stern cuts vertically down to the water, the bow tapered sharply, decisively, enormous winches in the mizzen cockpit. Its deck — which would, today, be called a flush deck — of a pastel blue, impertinently mocking fashion but clearly aimed at the substance of things. And so it is, because Stormvogel is sincere, a boat without frills, born to sail and do so as fast as possible. It is a splendid 23-meter Bermudian ketch,   created by someone who really sails the seas and designed by the most important, most innovative designers of the 1960s . The first owner, the one who commissioned the boat, was Cornelius Bruynzeel , inventor of marine-grade plywood. For his sixtieth birthday, he decided to give himself a yacht that truly looked outside the box, ideal for winning the most important offshore races in real time. His guidelines were simple and essential: it had to be fast, comfortable and innovative . He presented the idea to several designers, including Olin Stephens who, it is said, refused because he was afraid of stumbling with a colossal flop. Instead, E.G. Van de Stadt and Laurent Giles took on the ambitious project and thus, after approximately two years of work, in 1961, the Stormvogel first touched the water in Cape Town, South Africa, at the point where two oceans meet, symbolic proof of the Stormvogel’s natural environment.

Not even two months had gone by and “Storm” was already in the starting line-up for the Fastnet: at the helm Sir Chichester , the crew made up of the owner and many others who had participated in the project, including Micheal Trimming , a great sailor who recently returned aboard for a few regattas in the Mediterranean.

It goes without say, it won the Line of Honours. And this was just the beginning. Stormvogel went the full mile, winning the Buenos Aires to Rio in 1962 (setting the record; a record which, today, has only be bettered by approximately 20 hours), winning the Middle Sea Race (’68 – ’69) setting one of the longest-lasting records ever , and winning many other regattas in which it played a starring role. Stormvogel is a boat that makes its weight felt immediately, from the images published in books, with all the sails aloft, unheeding of the waves and strong winds, it immediately gives you a sense of the thousands of miles sailed in its 40-odd year lifespan. After 20 years of non-stop racing, Stormvogel found its second youth with a new owner, one who kept it like a gem so that he could race throughout the world and cruise the loveliest seas. In the 1980s it was in the Pacific, reaching the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia in Sidney after having sailed from Whitsunday Islands to the Great Barrier Reef along the East Coast of Australia.

DEAD CALM

At that time Kennedy Miller was wandering among the wharfs in the Sidney harbor. He was a young producer and, together with his crew, was looking for a large, particular boat that was, as he defined it, very British. It was to be the star of a film. When he saw the Stormvogel, he knew at once: she would be the one to host a young Nicole Kidman for the filming of “Dead Calm” . Stormvogel was perfect, the organization of the internal spaces and the area on deck ideal for shooting. Of the original boat, only a part of the dinette was reconstructed in the studios.

In fact, to facilitate filming, the course plotting table was recreated, which is actually located near the cockpit, at the entrance, under the small deckhouse. As the current captain and person who has lived this boat to the fullest,  Graeme Henry recalls that Stormvogel has remained practically unchanged since the days of the film. Only the harpoon has been eliminated because it was not part of the original Van der Stadt project and the cabin bulkheads were restored to their natural wood colors. Today the Stormvogel is still in the hands of the same owner as when the film was made. With her he has sailed throughout the world, on all seas, particularly in Thailand where for many years he had his base both for cruising and for racing in the Indian Ocean. Recently it returned to Italy to participate in the Panerai Circuit regattas, but it is already itching to leave for long ocean sailing.

I sailed on Stormvogel in the70’s when my husband was asked to bring her to Europe at the behest of her Swiss & German owners. We found her up on the slip in Singpore looking not too spruce after a rough trip from Bali. The skipper was anxious to leave so the handover was brief but we inherited an excellent & longstanding crew member and some useful contacts. We set off for Antibes via various then untouched places such as the Nicobars, the Amarantes, Aldabra. the Maldives etc. If anyone reads this was with us on part of that adventure I would live to be in touch.

A Closer Look at Nicole Kidman's Yacht Houkalani

Ever since 1969, Sunseeker has been one of the companies at the cutting edge of luxury yacht design. The company’s founder, Robert Braithwaite, used new materials and technology to give a small group of customers a new experience on the sea. And since the 1960s, the company have become one of the leading experts in luxurious boat design.

One of their most noteworthy customers is Nicole Kidman

It’s expected for successful actors and actresses, businessmen and entrepreneurs to own expensive things such as enormous mansions, expensive cars, and luxury yachts, and actress Nicole Kidman is no exception. Like the director Steven Spielberg, Nicole has bought a luxury yacht and named it the Hokulani. The name has a great significance for this actress, who was actually born on the Hawaiian island Oahu, and according to this article from E-News , her parents actually gifted her with the Hawaiian name Hokulani, a name Nicole’s husband, Keith Urban sometimes refers to her as. Hokulani means heavenly star in Hawaiian.

Crowned the richest celebrity of Australia, according to this Daily Mail article for 2017, Nicole Kidman has starred in numerous successful movies, such as Moulin Rouge, and her success is shown in her collection of mansion houses such as the Bunya Hill property, which cost the actress $6.7 million, according to this Youtube video, but it is her luxury yacht, the Hokulani which is the subject of this article. The Hokulani is a “Sunseeker Manhattan 74” luxury yacht, costing Nicole Kidman a cool $ 4.5 million to buy, and according to this Youtube video which goes into detail about the 9 most expensive things this great actress has already, the yacht contains every amenity anyone could wish for. According to Club Yacht’s article on the actress’s yacht, the Sunseeker can travel at 29 knots thanks to its twin MTU-4000 engines. The interior luxuries were the brainchild of the design team based in Nuvolari-Lenard, and owners other than Nicole Kidman can enjoy furnishings done in natural wood and fittings which provide an air of elegance, while large windows offer passengers tremendous views of the outside world.

The Hokulani is perfect if you want to have a fun time on the ocean, and in the summer months, Nicole frequently travels on the Hokulani. And why shouldn’t she? It has an on-deck wet-bar with showers which can issue hot or cold water, a luxury saloon, a well-stocked galley (kitchen in ocean terms), five luxurious cabins complete with en-suite bathrooms with provided entertainment facilities so the guests won’t become bored on a cruise and a living area which provides great entertainment should the actress have guests staying with her onboard the yacht. Even better - she and anyone with her can enjoy the water sports. The Hokulani, as a Sunseeker luxury yacht has waterski’s provided, along with tows to PWC’s, and snorkeling equipment and wakeboards.

Unfortunately, it isn’t all fun and games for Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman has long since been known as one of Sydney, and indeed, one of Australia’s most favorite children, though her reputation took a battering in 2008 when she had a poor error in judgment. The actress has sparked anger because of the Hokulani. According to this article dated from 2008, from Independent , neighbors want Nicole to take the yacht away with her. Nicole once lived in a prestigious apartment building in Sydney, close to the harbor. This building is home to some of Australia’s leading celebrities. When she sold her apartment, she made the mistake of leaving behind the Hokulani. Her former neighbors were left furious, and who could blame them for the actress’ actions? She had left behind this $4.5 million yacht in the harbor for nearly a year, which contravened the by-laws which regulate life on the pier the Hokulani was moored to in Walsh Bay, which is one of Sydney’s rejuvenated success stories, and contains some of the cities most expensive and luxury homes.

The bylaws state very clearly the only people who can moor their boats and yachts at the marina which is adjacent to the property Nicole Kidman had once lived in, and some residents have event accused the local committee of showing favoritism towards the actress because they allowed the Hokulani to remain moored in the marina for a year. To the Australians, it was probably bad enough that Nicole’s starring role in the movie Australia, where she played an English aristocrat, who inherited a ranch was panned. What made it even worse was around the same time the Hokulani was moored to the marina after she had moved away, Aboriginal leaders condemned her for playing the didgeridoo, which has long since been played by men traditionally. So the last thing the actress needs is aggravation from her former neighbors, although from a certain point of view their condemnation wouldn’t be especially high when compared to the condemnation of the Aboriginal people of her home country.

Far from being ignorant of the bylaws, the Sydney star knew what she was doing. The reason she had left the Yacht moored at her former home was, as a spokesperson said, she intended to try and buy a property in the same area. It never happened. The spokesperson promised residents the Hokulani would be moved shortly, and it was, though not before its presence upset the local residents.

What kind of boat in "Dead Calm"?

  • Add to quote

I just watched Dead Calm again for about the tenth time and I always try to see what kind of boat it is. There are very few long shots of the boat but it looks pretty big, lilke 50+ feet, it's a ketch but other than that I can't tell. I've even watched the credits to see if it said there but it doesn't. Any ideas?

I have to say I'm a bit skeptical about that answer... It's been a while since I saw the movie but I don't think that boat was a) 80 feet or b) a former maxi racer.. My recollection was more of a Gulfstar 60 ish sort of boat.. But the only thing I'm sure of is that I'm not sure at all.

Here's a trailer for the movie. You be the judge: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097162/trailers-screenplay-E11986-314

leaning over the side I don't have the movie, but didn't she lean over the side and grasp his arm. Shat angle of heel, what speed, and how much rfeeboard. Would this not give some indication of type of boat?

Excellent! Thanks Sasha, looks like Wiki was right on.

There was a boat in Dead Calm? All I rember is some young, hot redheaded lass with an accent.

sailingdog

I've never found Kidman to be particularly attractive but the gratuitous underwear shots in the recent remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (called "The Invasion") proved that she is one boo-yah hottie.

US27inKS

I saw Dead Calm for the first time a few days ago on cable. My wife and I had a good laugh. First, a couple double handing a boat that size across the middle of the pacific, and without even the need for self tailing winches or an autopilot. Then when the guy gets trapped aboard the sinking boat, makes his way out, only to build a real POS raft out of junk instead of hopping back on the dinghy. Then when she's on her way to the rescue (singlehanding the 80 ft yacht no less) she leaves the boat in the capable hands of her rope tied to the wheel autopilot, and climbs up the mast to stand on the spreader for a better view. When she spots him in the dark under full sail from her mast high vantage point, she magically reappears on deck in time for her 90 pound self to snatch a 175 pound man from the sea with one hand from the windward side at 10 knots. I just watched this again. The one handed MOB tug was impressive. But even more impressive was when she miraculously hoisted herself onto the second spreader!!! While under sail no less!!!! ...to look for her man. (At about 2:06) Why she wasn't even wearing a pfd! Ask yourself Nicole...What Would Dog Do? (PS - And another thing...why didn't Billy just use his hands to utile the rope?)

True - but also a rather cute bum.

Remind me to install a few snorkels in the boat..

Gentlemen, let's not get too analytical here. Dudes, it's Nicole Kidman! A ginger with perky nips and legs longer than a Ragnar post- what's not to like? arguing about the implausibilities of the acts of derring-do in the face of the bewitching evidence is like debating the badassedness of Chuck Norris- some things that is, just is.

Another interesting item that I missed in this gripping tale. Why didn't the bad guy just reach down to his feet and untie himself? The extra length of rope would have come in handy for strangling the wench.

The Others is classic Kidman.

Nicole Kidman’s top 10 films – ranked!

10. the hours (2002).

This was the performance that earned Nicole Kidman her Oscar for best actress – playing Virginia Woolf in an agonised spiritual state, somewhere between paralysis and a trance, grappling with the possibilities of fiction and her own depression. It is a good, if somewhat overrated performance, with Kidman playing to her queenly, statuesque qualities, but not quite tapping into the inner fire of her better performances. For some reason, she had to play the part with a silly prosthetic nose that made her look like Big Bird.

Kidman as Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

9. Destroyer (2018)

Opinions are divided on this most conspicuous of Kidman’s castings-against-type (I prefer The Paperboy in this vein), but she brings a tough, stolid, plausible presence to her uglied-up role as the undercover cop, physically and psychologically scarred by her experiences embedded in a robbery crew. Years after the events that brutalised her, she becomes convinced that she can finally take down the culprit; her bitterness and anguish are forcefully portrayed.

8. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Kidman had the distinction of working with Stanley Kubrick on his final film: hers is an intelligent and well-judged contribution to a minor, but interesting and overpoweringly atmospheric film, an adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella Dream Story, updated to late-20th-century New York. Kidman plays the wife of Tom Cruise’s sexually tortured high-society doctor and she is frank and open about sexuality in a way that he is not. It is she who will keep this film from sliding down the posterity rankings.

As Charlotte Bless in The Paperboy.

7. The Paperboy (2012)

No film and no performance of Kidman’s has been more misunderstood on first release. She was cast against type in this brash, uproarious Florida noir, giving a cracking performance as Charlotte Bless, the needy, dysfunctional peroxide blonde who starts up a pen-pal romance with a killer on death row. Kidman has some truly outrageous scenes, sending up her own image and getting stuck into every luridly horrible moment. Terrific stuff.

6. Dogville (2003)

Kidman’s aura of sophisticated mystery and desire is perfect for this daring experiment in filmed theatre from master auteur/prankster Lars von Trier. She plays Grace, a woman apparently on the run from criminals, who is taken in by the uptight provincial folk of Dogville, Colorado, and becomes the focus of their obsessively repressed moralism and desire. Without Kidman, this would be nothing.

Kidman in Dead Calm.

5. Dead Calm (1989)

Kidman had her breakthrough with this terrific suspense thriller that has something of Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski. She and Sam Neill play a couple alone on a yacht, who encounter a disturbing young man (Billy Zane) who begs to come aboard. This is Kidman in her early, frizzy-haired incarnation, a more natural, earthy performance than any she has since been known for, but this is great stuff as her character, left all alone, has to outwit and outmanoeuvre the creepy stranger.

4. The Portrait of a Lady (1996)

This is Kidman in rarefied form. Director Jane Campion creates for her, or from her, a shimmering haze of mystery in this adaptation of Henry James’s novel in which she plays the beautiful American Isabel Archer who finds herself attracted to John Malkovich’s louche and cynical artist. For many, the exquisiteness of her appearance here makes it peak Kidman. She goes into her distinctive trance, which also mesmerises the audience.

Presenting the weather in To Die For.

3. To Die For (1995)

This was the key early role for Kidman, a barnstorming lead turn in which, interestingly, it was director Gus Van Sant who divined that her star quality lay not in ordinariness, but in something more fabricated and unearthly. She is the sinister and ruthless weather presenter on local cable TV who is desperate to become a star at all costs. Nowadays, she would be an Instagram influencer.

2. Birth (2004)

This is a film that grows with each rewatching and no one but Kidman could have carried it off with such dignity and flair. She plays Anna, a beautiful, wealthy Manhattan widow who is astonished when a 10-year-old boy walks into her life and announces he is the reincarnation of her dead husband. And he does this, citing details that only her late husband could possibly know. The single, extended shot of Kidman’s stricken face as we and she realise that she now believes it, is incredible, and so is her scene with the boy when they discuss how they will marry, or remarry, in 10 or so years, when he comes of age.

Nicole Kidman in The Others.

1. The Others (2001)

This is the perfect Kidman film, a ghost story in the style of Henry James that, more than any other, elicits her almost spiritual aura of beauty and mystery with its occult trace of sexiness. In this movie, she is part Grace Kelly, part Deborah Kerr, with a touch of Kathleen Byron. (I should also say she was once cast as Grace Kelly in the terrible Grace of Monaco, which managed to misunderstand both Kelly and Kidman). Here, she plays the statuesque chatelaine of a grand but oppressively gloomy country house. Her husband has gone off to fight in the second world war, leaving her to deal with the children and what few servants they can afford. They are terrified by what appear to be ghosts. Kidman’s beautiful face, lit by candlelight, seems in this film to have been painted by John Everett Millais. She has a sheen of tragedy, and a kind of eroticised but refined victimhood. This is classic Kidman.

Dead Calm: Rae tries to slow the boat

Facebook logo

Request access

Rae (Nicole Kidman) shuts off the engine and takes the key. Hughie (Billy Zane) tries to get it back but she’s too quick for him. Unfortunately, the dog is even quicker.

Summary by Paul Byrnes .

CURATOR'S NOTES

Unexpected use of humour, set up by an earlier scene where we see Rae playing fetch with the dog. Again, the scene has a metaphorical resonance. Rae enters the male world (the engine room) and tries to take control of the boat, to come up from below. It’s filmed like a sports event. Hughie sees the humour of it and even uses a sports metaphor to describe her temporary win. 'Helluva season ahead of her…’ Tension is relieved before it is rebuilt in the finale.

Dead Calm synopsis

Australian naval officer John Ingram (Sam Neill) and his young wife Rae (Nicole Kidman) take their yacht to sea to recover from the death of a child. Becalmed in mid-ocean, they rescue a frightened young American, Hughie Warriner (Billy Zane), from a sinking schooner. While John investigates the other boat, the psychotic Hughie takes control of the yacht and leaves him behind.

Curator's notes

Dead Calm  is basically a dangerous hitchhiker story, set on water. The thriller elements are reduced to as few as possible – two boats, two men, one woman, one dog, and a cruel sea. Within this minimalist framework, the film carries a lot of subtext, to do with grief, passion and a form of resurrection. Rae is a broken woman at the start, marooned on a yacht with a husband who doesn’t know how angry he is. They have lost their son in a car accident in which she was driving. They are not a happy family. The stranger Hughie brings his own happy family fantasy with him.

Some of the creepiness of Zane’s performance comes from his willingness to believe Rae actually fancies him. They do have a sexual encounter in the film, but it’s shown as Rae’s ultimate self-sacrifice – and the turning point, in terms of her finding her own strength. The script, adapted from a 1963 novel by little known American pulp writer Charles Williams, plays with the conventions of the sun-sex-sailing fantasy. An idyll becomes a nightmare, and the sea (usually depicted in literature as female) rises up to punish them – or perhaps to aid another female. (The novel had been filmed already, in 1968 by Orson Welles, but that film was never completed).

Nicole Kidman was 20 when she was cast in  Dead Calm  in 1987. She had just become an overnight star in Australia in Kennedy Miller’s TV mini-series  Vietnam . Within a year of Dead Calm’s opening in 1989, she was in Hollywood, starring opposite Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder – partly as a result of her performance in this film.  Dead Calm  also opened the Hollywood door for director Noyce. He would not make another film in Australia until  Rabbit-Proof Fence , 13 years later.

Notes by Paul Byrnes

This clip starts approximately 47 minutes into the feature.

Rae cautiously enters the engine room of the yacht and fumbles for the ignition switch. Rae  Ah!  Nursing her hand, she manages to switch off the engine.

Up on deck, Hughie is smoking and listening to blues music. He jumps up when he realises the boat has stopped. He pursues Rae above and below decks until both are standing on opposite ends of the deck. She holds up the ignition key. Hughie  Score one for Mrs Ingram. She has a hell of a season ahead of her.  Rae throws the key overboard, but is dismayed to see her dog, thinking it’s a game, leap overboard to fetch it. Rae and Hughie both call out to the dog. Rae  Ben, no! No, Ben! Leave it! Leave it there.  Hughie  Fetch, Ben, come on. Bring it here, boy.  Rae  Alright, bring it here.  Hughie  Stay, Ben.  Rae  Come on. OK, drop it. Drop the key.  Hughie  Hold the key, Ben.  Rae  No, drop it!  Hughie  Give it, boy.  Rae  Over here, Ben. Come on!  Hughie  Hey, Ben. Backstroke.  Rae  Come on, Ben. Come on!  Ben swims to the boat with the key in his mouth. As Rae reaches to grab it from him, Hughie pulls at her hair from behind.   Rae  Ah! Oh!  Hughie  That’s beautiful bone structure there, Rae.  He pulls back her head and kisses her forehead. Pulling her by the hair he throws her to the ground. Rae  Ah! Ah! Ah.  Hughie pulls Ben onto the boat. Hughie  Good boy. He’s a champ, this one.

Nicole Kidman's multimillion pound Sunseeker yacht complete with luxurious features

It is an ideal yacht for socialising

  • 10:24, 28 JUN 2022
  • Updated 10:33, 28 JUN 2022

Actress Nicole Kidman is seen backstage during day 1 of CMA Fest 2022

Home to the UK's most iconic coasts, Dorset is often able to host a whole range of world-class fleets across our many ports. Other vessels may no stop at our ports, but could roam the area at any given time to explore Dorset's coastline and take in the views.

From huge 'rockstar' cruise ships offering spectacular entertainment to luxury superyachts , Dorset has seen its fair share of impressive vessels. However, there is one stunning yacht that is owned by a very famous individual.

The Sunseeker Manhattan 74, or 74 Sport Yacht, is, as of 2018, owned by Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman, which she has called Hokulani, according to Motorboat and Yachting . The yacht's name means 'heavenly star' and is said to be a nickname given to the 55-year-old actress by her parents to pay homage to her birthplace of Honolulu, Hawaii.

The star is perhaps most known for her roles in hit films including The Hours and Moulin Rouge, though it might be less known that she owns this impressive superyacht. The Manhattan 74 is described as "undeniably a Sunseeker" boasting luxurious interior designs and interesting features.

The yacht is ideal for socialising with guests. The vessel is split over three levels, including an upper level vantage point to take in the sea views. Inside, there is the owner's room, five guest suites, the captain's cabin and even has room to sleep up to eight crew members.

The vessel's design is sleek and modern and measures in at around 22.82m. There is enough space for an entertainment room as well as a few water toys.

It is also boasted as having high-tech features, including hydraulic drop-away cockpit doors that opens up the interior living space to invite the outside. There are comfortable seating and sunpads on both sides of the vessel to ensure a relaxed space for guests to chill out and soak in some rays.

Motorboat and Yachting reportedly said that the yacht is expected to cost in the region on £2.1 million. It seems the Nicole Kidman-owned superyacht is sure to turn heads wherever she visits.

Nicole Kidman's yacht row

KEY POINTS:

It is one of Sydney's most prestigious apartment buildings, right on the harbour and home to a clutch of local celebrities, including, until recently, Nicole Kidman. Problem is, when the Hollywood star sold up, she left her $4.5m (NZ$5.3m) yacht behind - and her former neighbours are furious about it. Strict bylaws regulate life at Pier 6/7 in Walsh Bay, a rejuvenated former wharf area containing some of the city's most expensive homes. The rules specify, among other things, where washing may be hung, and whether gulls may be fed. One apartment owner recently fell foul of the block's governing committee for installing pot plants on his balcony. The bylaws also state that only residents can park their yachts in the adjacent marina. So why is Kidman's large boat, Hokulani, still moored there, nearly a year after she moved out? Favouritism, mutter disgruntled locals, who accuse the committee of turning a blind eye to its presence. Sydney-born Kidman has long been the city's favourite daughter but her reputation has taken a battering in recent weeks. Her latest film, Australia , in which she plays an English aristocrat who inherits an outback cattle ranch, has been panned around the world. Last week, she was condemned by Aboriginal leaders for playing the didgeridoo n an instrument generally considered to be reserved for men n on a German chat show. Now comes the Melrose Place-style drama on her home turf. The star, who still owns a waterside mansion in Sydney's affluent eastern suburbs, is apparently well aware that Hokulani is breaching regulations. A spokesman for Kidman told the Sydney Morning Herald that the boat had been left at the marina because she had contemplated buying another apartment in the same block, which did not happen. The spokesman claimed the boat would be moved next week, and denied that Kidman was "trying to take advantage of the situation". "The [governing committee] would never do anything just because it's her," he said. An adviser to the owners' corporation, Wally Paterson, agreed the yacht's continuing presence was a breach of bylaws but insisted he was "absolutely adamant everyone gets treated equally no matter who or what they are". Pier 6/7 is home to, among others, Ryan Stokes, the son of the Australian media magnate Kerry Stokes, Paul Cave, who founded the hugely popular BridgeClimb over Sydney Harbour, and a glamorous former television news anchor, Mary Kostakidis. Kidman's fellow Hollywood star, Cate Blanchett, is co-artistic director (with her husband, Andrew Upton) of the nearby Sydney Theatre Company in Walsh Bay. Ms Kidman, who recently had a baby daughter, Sunday Rose, with her husband, the country singer Keith Urban, lives mainly in Nashville. She jets into Sydney frequently to see family, and usually spends Christmas there but said recently that she would be staying in Nashville because she was upset by negative reviews of her role in Australia , directed by Baz Luhrmann. One friend was quoted in the Australian media as saying: "She's been so upset. It really has devastated her." - THE INDEPENDENT

Nicole Kidman in the viral AMC commercial

Nicole Kidman is well aware of all the spoofs her viral AMC commercial generated and now has an idea to perform it live.

The actress starred in the September 2021 AMC advertisement, which reminded people of the unique experience of watching a film in the theater following the pandemic. Kidman knows about the recent trend of drag queens spoofing the commercials and is ready to perform the monologue live.

The Secret Superpower of Nicole Kidman

Whether she’s confronting the toughest emotions onscreen, raising millions to support women’s causes, or putting on a pinstriped suit to help save the movies, the Expats star brings people together.

nicole kidman

Bare feet tucked up on the couch, hands burrowed into the sleeves of her Balenciaga suit, multi-award-winning actress Nicole Kidman looks me dead in the eye and, with great relish, delivers one of her most iconic lines: “Heartbreak feels good in a place like this.”

In case you’ve been living under a rock, or haven’t been to the movies in the last few years, that quote is from a spot Kidman filmed for AMC Theatres at the height of the pandemic. It’s a simple 60-second ad, and yet, from the moment of its release in September 2021, it became the stuff of legend. People stand and salute when it plays in theaters. The internet overflows with homemade “Nicole Kidman for AMC” merch. Sotheby’s recently auctioned off the pinstriped Michael Kors Collection suit worn in the campaign for $9,525.

While not every actor enjoys becoming a meme, Kidman has loved every second of it, including the growing trend of drag queens spoofing the AMC ad in their performances. “My dream will be to be onstage doing it with a drag queen,” she says. “I’ve got to be able to do that at some point.”

nicole kidman

That the campaign went mega-viral, to Kidman, is kismet: She filmed it over one weekend while working on the movie Being the Ricardos , recruiting the film’s DP, Jeff Cronenweth, and her friend, Oscar-winning screenwriter Billy Ray, to make it happen. She felt it was her duty to answer AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron’s call to help get people back into movie seats. “It was just the desire to keep cinemas alive,” Kidman says. “I’ve had the best experiences in cinema. I’d pretend I was going to school; I’d forge a note, and I’d go and sit in a movie theater. That’s a safe haven for me, so the idea of those not existing—that’s just not part of the equation in my lifetime.”

So being memed, getting the SNL treatment, having Jimmy Kimmel crack jokes about it onstage at the 2023 Oscars—it’s all worth it to Kidman. “If that’s what it takes, I’ll do whatever it takes,” she says with a laugh. “We have to have some more ideas for the next one.”

nicole kidman

This, ultimately, is the biggest through line of Kidman’s long and illustrious career, the magic that she brings to every project and every set: community. She loves connecting people—especially women. In 2017, she made a very public pledge at a press conference during the Cannes Film Festival that she would work with a female director every 18 months. It came partially from a crisis plaguing Hollywood—she cited the statistic that only 4.2 percent of the top films in 2016 had been directed by women—but also from a very personal place. “There’s a lot of talk, but I need to do; I’m a doer. I also just love women,” Kidman says. “I’m surrounded by great women and I understand all the aspects of different women, because we have so many women in our family. I feel very, very safe and very at home.”

I don’t shy away from them.”

From Sofia Coppola’s film The Beguiled to the HBO miniseries The Undoing , directed by Susanne Bier, it’s clear Kidman has more than made good on that promise, not merely working with female directors and creators, but also championing them and throwing her star power behind their work. When it came time to find a partner for the Amazon series Expats , which Kidman co–executive produced, the actress approached writer and director Lulu Wang. Like the rest of Hollywood, Kidman was dazzled by Wang’s second feature film, The Farewell , and knew she could bring something special to the story. “She really believes in a singular vision, and I know from the work that she’s chosen to do as an actor for her whole career, she really believes in directors and in taking risks, and she convinced me of that,” says Wang, who directed every episode and was one of five writers on the project—all women. “She said, ‘I don’t want it to be anything other than your vision. That’s why I came to you, and whatever you feel that you’ll need, I’ll make sure that it happens.’”

Expats is something of a full-circle moment for Kidman and her production company Blossom Films, which launched with the 2010 movie Rabbit Hole . Both are stories about women grief-stricken over the loss of a child. But where Rabbit Hole ’s Becca had a sense of closure following the death of her son, Expats ’ Margaret is agonized by the fact that her son has gone missing in a Hong Kong night market. It wasn’t an easy role to carry around for months of filming, especially as a mother, but Kidman felt a deep compassion for Margaret. “She will not give up hope, which was probably the thing I related to—that desire to go, ‘No, I know deep down, my child is out there and I’ll find my child,’” Kidman says of her Expats character. “She’s got this dogged refusal to accept anyone that tells her differently. She just won’t stop. And that’s what I think I empathized with.”

In one of the most striking scenes of the series, Margaret and her husband Clarke (played by Brian Tee) visit a morgue to view a body that matches the description of their son. Facing the body bag, Margaret starts laughing and finds herself unable to stop. Kidman made the suggestion based on her own experience viewing her father in his coffin. “I literally started laughing because I was so grief-stricken and so devastated. My body and my psyche just couldn’t handle it,” she says. “Even at other times in my life, I’ve laughed at inappropriate times because I have this weird short-circuiting. It’s like you need this moment to keep you alive, in a way, otherwise you’ll die. It’s too much pain.”

Expats required emotional work that could be daunting for some actors, but is the kind of material Kidman is drawn to. “I’m fortunate that I’ve got a job where I get to explore emotional landscapes that are heavy, strange, extraordinary, bizarre, beautiful, deep,” she says. “I don’t shy away from them, partly because I’m committed to examining life, what it means to be alive and feel.”

For me, [awards are] very much about the family, whether it be my mother, my husband, my kids. You go, ‘Oh look, I earned this for the family.’ That gives it meaning and it gives it a joy.”

Thankfully, Kidman has her family to fall back on and support her. In Dave Karger’s new book 50 Oscar Nights , Kidman admitted that she was “struggling” with her personal life when she won her sole Academy Award in 2003. “I haven’t won an Oscar when I wasn’t lonely,” she says frankly, but “I’ve been nominated since winning, and for me, it’s very much about the family, whether it be my mother, my husband, my kids.” With husband Keith Urban and their two daughters, Sunday and Faith, in her corner, the personal joy makes the professional success that much better. “There’s something about it where you go, ‘Oh look, I earned this for the family,’” she says. “That makes it fun. That gives it meaning and gives it a joy.”

The four have a home in Tennessee, away from the bustling coasts, and Kidman and Urban are an active part of that community, from visiting children’s hospitals to running out to buy diapers for the school donation drive. “I like being a part of something not about my work, not about who I am, none of that. Just a citizen who’s in the world. And my kids love that, too, when I do that,” she says.

Kidman, who has felt connected to breast cancer causes ever since her own mother was treated for the disease when the actress was a teenager, has helped raise millions of dollars to support research by the Women’s Cancer Program at Stanford over the years. She has also helped fund two crucial studies at Nashville’s Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, and even visits patients there when she can. She reads medical journals as well. “It’s always struck me that she doesn’t just come in and say that she wants to make a donation. She wants to understand what she’s doing and how she can have an impact,” says Vandana Abramson, MD, a coleader of the center’s Breast Cancer Research Program who has become close friends with Kidman. “How many questions she’s asked about the science speaks volumes about who she is.”

In addition to her work with breast cancer research, Kidman has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN since 2006. As part of that work, she supported UN Women’s Say NO–UNiTE to End Violence Against Women initiative, doing more than merely throwing her name behind the cause. In 2020, as cases of intimate partner abuse spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kidman reached out to UN Women to ask what she could do to help. The result was an op-ed she wrote for the Guardian , as well as a widely viewed video that raised awareness of support services. Her relationship with the UN goes back nearly 20 years, but for Kidman, developing those deep roots is crucial to doing the work. “I’d love to be able to do it all, and I’ve got to be careful how much I commit to so I can do it properly, because the idea of not doing it properly—that’s not a good feeling,” she explains.

Much of what Kidman does these days is tied to her two daughters with Urban, the youngest of her four children. They’ve traveled the world with their parents, whether living on location with their actor mom or touring with their musician dad. And when they’re home, Kidman loves that their house is where all the girls’ friends gather. “I love teenage girls. I just find them exquisite,” she says. “I marvel at that age group and what they’re dealing with, but also their ability to handle so much.” Her daughter Sunday, by the way, is at least partially responsible for Big Little Lies getting a third season. “My daughter is the one who watched both of the series and went, ‘Okay, there’s just no question, there has to be a third,’” she says, adding with a laugh that her daughter even gives notes on character development. “She’s like, ‘Celeste, she’s not coping in the second one, what is she doing? I could kind of see the point of view of Mary Louise.’”

Kidman confirms that she and Reese Witherspoon have been texting about the third season, both feeling the timing is right to revisit their characters. “There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives—because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman says.

nicole kidman

I have a very full life with people that I love. I’m raising daughters. I’m a wife,I’m a best friend. I’m a sister, I’m an aunt. I have deeply intimate relationships, and I’ve always been that way. And that, to me, is the meaning of life.”

She also says that there’s even a timeline in place for making it happen with the rest of the cast—which she cheekily declines to share. The Big Little Lies costars are in big demand, and it’s daunting to consider lining up those A-list calendars, but Kidman says the real friendships they’ve built with each other on set make it easy. “I think when you’re all scattered and never sort of cross paths, it’s very, very different. But when you’re all still very intertwined, that’s what makes it doable, because there’s a willingness and you want to spend time together,” she says.

There’s no question this life has been glamorous for Kidman. It’s the night of the Expats premiere in New York City, so when we part ways, she’s whisked back to her hotel room, where she’ll be zipped up into a sexy, skin-baring gown from Atelier Versace, a slinky black number with an acid-green silk-satin lining. But as much fun as she has playing with fashion and working with brands like Balenciaga, which recently named her an ambassador, she’s also more than happy to skip the after-parties. “It feels a little unreal at times. I want to get out, take my dress off, and put my jammies on. It’s kind of like the opposite of Cinderella—I’m happy to go home and just go back to me,” she admits. “It does feel a little overwhelming. I’m like, ‘I need to go home now. I’m very tired. I want to get warm, and I want to curl up, and I want to feel real.’”

a man in a black dress

The real Kidman, she says, is someone who puts the Christmas lights up way too early. She’s an oldest child who is still working on her tendency toward people-pleasing. She throws big New Year’s Eve blowouts with her husband, who loves that holiday, and regularly hosts parties for her daughters’ friends, too. In other words, it’s her community that makes her real. “I have a very full life with people that I love. I’m raising daughters. I’m a wife, I’m a best friend. I’m a sister, I’m an aunt. I have deeply intimate relationships with people. And that, to me, is the meaning of life—and then taking care of what we leave behind, who we leave behind and how we do that, and our sense of respect for that.”
