Congdon to leave Old Dominion CEO post after decade of historic outperformance

David S. Congdon wasn't exactly dealt an ace-high hand when he became CEO in January 2008 of the less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier that his grandparents founded 74 years before.

The company, Old Dominion Freight Line Inc., was doing OK. But the macro environment was crumbling around it. A freight recession had been underway for two years. The financial pillars of the U.S. economy were starting to crack, leading to a full-blown financial crisis and the worst recession in 70 years. The LTL industry, already hammered by the downturn, would face indigenous turmoil during 2009 and 2010 as vicious rate wars broke out over grabs for market share and a concerted effort by other carriers to drive the ailing YRC Worldwide Inc., then the market leader by size, out of business.

Through the maelstrom, Congdon and Old Dominion stood firm. It would not jump into the rate-cutting ditch with others. It kept pricing relatively firm, and when the economy and freight demand improved, it would not raise rates before it saw what others had done, and then would bring up prices to levels below its rivals.

Most important, Congdon and Old Dominion tuned out the noise and focused on the daily blocking and tackling that wins and keeps shipper and third-party logistics provider (3PL) business: reliable, damage-free deliveries at rates that the marketplace deemed fair and reasonable. In the process, a virtuous cycle was created where shippers would seek to associate with the carrier perceived as providing the gold standard of service.

Yesterday, Thomasville, N.C.-based Old Dominion said that Congdon, 60, would step down as CEO May 16 to become executive chairman, a position currently held by his father, Earl, who will then become senior executive chairman. Greg C. Gantt, Old Dominion's president, will add the CEO's title at that time.

Congdon steps away from the CEO role with a track record of success that will be hard to match, especially over a relatively short span. In 2007, Old Dominion posted revenue of $1.4 billion, operating income of $129 million, and net income of $71.8 million. In 2017, the company reported $3.35 billion in revenue, operating income of $575 million and net income of $463 million, the latter a remarkable increase of well over sixfold in just a decade. Old Dominion's operating ratio—the ratio of operating expenses over revenues, a key metric of operating efficiency and profitability—fell more than 800 basis points, to 82.9 percent, during Congdon's tenure, a sterling record given the complexity of synchronizing a national LTL network with dozens of terminals, multiple hand-offs, and so many things that could go wrong.

The company's performance has been reflected in the soaring value of its equity. Old Dominion shares, which on Jan. 1, 2008, traded at $12.96 a share (adjusted for three stock splits), closed Friday at $147.59 a share, a gain in percentage terms normally associated with a high-flying high-tech company instead of a well-established trucker.

Bradley S. Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Greenwich, Conn.-based transport and logistics provider XPO Logistics Inc., which acquired LTL and logistics giant Con-way Inc. in 2015, said in an e-mail that Congdon "created the benchmark (that) we measure our LTL performance against." Jacobs called Congdon's performance as CEO "stupendous."

C. Thomas Barnes, who ran Con-way's multi-modal transport unit earlier in the decade and today is president of project44, a Chicago-based logistics IT concern, said Old Dominion's operations were in good shape when Congdon became CEO. What Congdon brought to the role was "more focused leadership," Barnes said. Today, Old Dominion's yield-management practices are considered second to none, and it is widely regarded as the best among trucking firms when it comes to understanding costs. In yesterday's statement, Earl Congdon praised his son's "relentless execution" as a key factor in elevating the company to its current stature.

The elevation of Gantt to the CEO role marks the second time in less than two years that a big trucking concern with generations of family leadership has gone outside the bloodline. In May 2016, Omaha-based truckload and logistics provider Werner Enterprises, Inc. tapped Derek J. Leathers as CEO , ending a 60-year history of a Werner family member holding the job.

Gantt, who joined Old Dominion in 1994 as a regional vice president, is considered by many a natural fit to fill Congdon's big shoes. Gantt is "the best operator in LTL," said Barnes.

From the fabric of our community comes a new legacy.

The dawn of a new downtown high point..

It began with a belief. The belief that downtown High Point was ready to become a different kind of place. A place that hums with energy and activity every single day of the year.

Fueled by this vision, Business High Point – Chamber of Commerce sparked the HP365 initiative to leverage our community’s global leadership and revitalize the local area.

At the heart of this effort would be a new cornerstone, built by and for the High Point community.

Joining forces. Moving forward.

A coalition of city and community leaders including International Market Centers, business leader Bill Millis, High Point University, Blue Ridge Companies and interior design studio Barbour Spangle committed their time, talent and financial resources to this ambitious new vision. David Congdon and the Earl and Kathryn Congdon Family Foundation’s generous support anchors them all.

The Congdon family leads the charge.

As founders of Old Dominion Freight Line, which grew from a single truck running a 94-mile route from Richmond to Norfolk, Virgina into a multibillion-dollar global freight leader, the Congdon family understands the level of commitment it takes to turn an idea into action, and action into enduring vitality. With a philanthropic commitment exceeding $40 million dollars, the Earl and Kathryn Congdon Family Foundation drove our ambitious vision into action.

Yet another mystery is uncovered at duluth's storied glensheen mansion.

Below the surface of Lake Superior rested the legend of a diving bell.

For decades, it was yet another mystery surrounding the storied Congdon family of Duluth — a seemingly tall tale that most dismissed as fiction.

But when a massive concrete and steel diving chamber weighing about 1 ½ tons was discovered this week on the grounds of the Glensheen mansion, it only added to the intrigue surrounding the infamous mansion and those who lived there.

For now the staff at Glensheen, a sprawling London Road historic estate that has since been turned into a museum, are reveling in the unlikely find.

"This is one of the coolest things we have historically uncovered because it speaks to the port history in Duluth," Dan Hartman, Glensheen's director, said Friday. "When people think of Minnesota they don't think of a diving bell being used."

"It makes sense if a university would own one or if the [Duluth Seaway] Port Authority had one," he said. "But why would a private family own a diving bell?"

Hartman and his staff are trying to find those answers as well as learn more about diving bells. They've contacted marine experts and publicized their find in hopes of jostling the memories of Congdon relatives who are scattered across the country.

The discovery, inside the mansion's boathouse, caught museum staff by surprise as crews worked to restore the only remaining structural boathouse on Lake Superior.

The large concrete building, which once housed Chester Congdon's 54-foot yacht, was battered by a 2017 storm that filled the boathouse channel with a massive amount of rock.

Until the storm hit, the channel was filled with water. Three metal poles poked through the surface, and on a nice day, the Glensheen staff could see rivets that appeared to be on a metal drum.

As heavy equipment removed rock during the recent restoration work, crews pulled up the metal drum and finally separated fact from fiction. It wasn't until it was moved from the shadows of the boathouse, however, that the museum staff's skepticism about a diving bell was erased. Now, they're pushing to piece together the story behind it.

Hartman said they long heard tales that it belonged to Clara and Chester Congdon's nephew, Alfred Bannister. He came to live with the family when his parents died in the 1900s, Hartman said. He eventually went to Cornell College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and became an engineer who loved science and exploring, Hartman said.

When Chester Congdon needed his yacht transported from New York, where it was built, to Duluth, Bannister volunteered to sail it across the Great Lakes, he said.

"It was such a feat at the time that his journey was covered by a national yachting magazine," Hartman said. "That's why this diving bell story does sound like Alfred Bannister."

The bell, an enclosed steel chamber with a concrete bottom, is about 8 feet high and 5 feet wide, Hartman said. One person could fit comfortably in it while air is pumped inside. The bell was probably used between 1920 and 1940, Hartman said.

"The story goes that [Bannister] used it to check on the pier's foundation," he said. At least, that's according to the tale that's been told.

"Family legends don't often pass down well," Hartman said.

The oddity of the Congdon family owning a diving bell is intriguing to Hartman and others. History is filled with stories of the peculiar and sensational, Hartman said.

"And this is pretty sensational," he said. "And the fact that it was hiding in this boat channel for how many umpteen decades is exciting."

But so is the fact that there are so many questions yet to be answered, Hartman said.

In fact, one person offered Friday to buy the diving bell for $10,000, Hartman said.

It's not for sale. Instead, Hartman's staff wants to find the right home where it can be preserved and serve as an educational piece.

"I want it to [stay] in the Duluth area, connected to the port story," Hartman said. "You just don't see these things in Minnesota."

The sweetest driver and the most amazing relaxing time. We didn't have to worry about anything. Really throughly enjoyed our time. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.

We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!

Mark was a great help and made sure the day went smoothly for us. I would recommend him and his services. Thank you!

I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. I copied part of the message he sent me for the quote I asked for: "The following land yacht is available for your 6 hour (5:45p-11:45p) event on the date you've requested.  30-36 passenger - $1,695.00 Our prices INCLUDE ALL FEES AND CHAUFFEUR'S GRATUITY, as well as complimentary ice and bottled water." I had 32 people on my bus and we all had enough space! The water was definitely awesome for the end of the night but Mark was so responsible and got us to SF city hall on time and safely. He was so quick at replying to my messages and I have had looked into many other places and this was the most accommodating and reasonably priced. Highly recommend !!

Our group had an amazing time! Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because the other photos on here don't do it justice. There's also a TV that you can stream to. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future.

First class experience from pickup, journey, to drop off. Our chauffeur Kelvin provided us with a safe and wonderful experience to make for a good time. Will definitely be hiring this company for future corporate events and celebrations. Keep up your good work. Thank you.

I had my 40th birthday bash and Mark was amazing. Bus was very clean and roomy with a bathroom which was a plus. Hands down, book with Pacific Land Yachts if you are looking for a party bus. Would definitely do business again!

I rented a bus for my brothers 30th birthday and it was an unforgettable night! The bus was in great condition and so much bigger than I imagined. It even had a restroom which was helpful because we had it reserved for 5 hours. The driver was fantastic and let us blast our music and dance the whole time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good time!!

Mark is pretty darn awesome! We chartered his land yacht for a work event. Everyone had an amazing time, and everyone said that they would definitely want to work with Mark again for both future and personal events that require group transportation. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!

Great driver. Smooth sailing for a large group of 30+! Very nice clean bus (with a bathroom!!) We had such a great time. I can't wait to do it again.
