As the ‘yachting capital of the world,’ you can probably guess that motor yachts and cruisers are a hot comedy around these waterways. Perfect for larger groups and corporate events, most of these rentals will come with a professional captain.

Safety Requirements :

Boating License/Education Rules: All Florida residents born after January 1, 1988 who operate vessels with 10-horsepower or more must carry a Florida Boating Safety Education identification card. You must be at least 14 years of age to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).

Life Jacket Requirements: Children ages 6 and under must wear a PFD.

If you’re unfamiliar with navigating the ICW, consider booking your rental with a professional captain. Whether you are at the helm yourself or you opt for a captain, the ICW is a gateway to discover Fort Lauderdale's inland bays, party coves, and popular sandbars; not to mention the numerous great waterfront restaurants. Whether your crew is young and ready to party, or you’re a family looking for relaxation and leisure, the ICW offers something for everyone.

Wake Zone : Navigating the Intracoastal Waterway for the first time can be intimidating for some. You’ll want to be aware of channel markers, wake zones, and other aids to navigation that can help you along the way. Also be sure to read our helpful  Guide to Navigating Florida’s ICW .

Pro Tip : The ICW is thousands of miles long, needless to say, there’s much to do and see here. Make the best out of your day on the water in Fort Lauderdale and book a full-day boat rental.

Anchor at the Famous Fort Lauderdale Sandbar

If this is your first time boating in Fort Lauderdale, you won’t want to miss visiting one of three popular local sandbars: the Fort Lauderdale Sandbar (also known as the ‘Triangle;’ within the New River), Lake Sylvia (south of Bahia Mar), and the sandbar on Whiskey Creek (near John Lloyd State Park). Make sure to stock up your cooler with your favorite drinks, adult beverages, and plenty of water. You could also bring aboard a couple of subs from your favorite deli, or order directly from Jay’s Sandbar Foodboat, which is anchored and open for business every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 8pm.

Pro Tip : The first sandbar is located at the intersection of New River. Our team recommends arriving at the sandbar before noon to secure a primate location. Be sure you anchor your boat outside of the nearby channel.

Sight-see and dock-and-dine along the New River

You’ll be tempted to dock at many of Fort Lauderdale’s iconic restaurants on your cruise downtown along the New River. To go bar hopping by boat here, be sure to book a boat with a captain who can be your sober skipper and local tour guide. Dock at Boathouse to enjoy the views of water traffic while you sip on a glass of their fine house wine. Next, go to the Pirates Republic Seafood Restaurant and order the house’s popular exotic drink: Caprinha. End your New River adventure at Marti’s New River Bistro for their delectable shrimp bloody mary.

Pro Tip:  The best time of day to go bar hopping on New River is between the hours of 11am and 2pm or 5pm and 7pm.

Where to go Boating in Fort Lauderdale

Lake Sylvia

Lake Sylvia is a hidden gem located just off the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW),  north of Fort Lauderdale. Hop on a pontoon with the family and enjoy the small crowd of sunkissed Floridians that hang out here (don’t worry parents—this is a very family-friendly environment, you won’t find much of a party crowd here). If you have small children pack their floaties, the waters of Lake Sylvia are protected, warm and gentle. You and your crew will most likely be hungry after all the fun, nearby Lake Slyvia is Boatyard, a waterfront steakhouse with specialty beverages, and dishes even the kids will enjoy. 

Dockage : Leaving from the southwest corner, boaters can head west on the canal under the 7' bridge. Once you continue up the ICW, you can enter the canal just south of SE 15th Street where you’ll find a public boat ramp at Cox’s Landing.

Pro Tips : The water depth in Lake Sylvia can vary greatly depending on your location. Be sure to keep an eye on your depth finder and look for shallow areas.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park

Also fondly known as Fort Lauderdale's 'Central Park,' Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is the green speck amid a concrete jungle located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. To get here by boat, and cruise around Sunrise Bay or Coral Bay. On one side of the bay, you'll have the thick tropical hammock trees of Hugh Birch Taylor State Park; on the other side, you'll see Fort Lauderdale's famous luxury waterfront mansions. There are many more spots, like the Bonnet House and Garden, sitting just south of Coral Bay! Overall the experience was wonderful! This is due to the Captain being very friendly and personable. The process to book was very easy and provided one on one intimate experience but after the payment and forms submitted there were no contact following up to the trip. I emailed a few times and when I called they sound a bit agitated stating they sent an email which I didn't received the when they did send no attachment. So I had to call again on the day of the trip. The captain called a few hrs before to let us know he is awaiting our arrival and to share some information in reference to parking. Once we got to the location the parking described was a bit hard to identify. This may have been on me but there were a lot of parking spots that belonged to different boat companies. Call the captain he told us to stay were we are and he was standing about 100 yds out. Finally in the boat. The boat looked a bit aged and may need some cleaning but the overall experience was wonderful due to the captain.

I had guests in from out of town & they wanted to charter a boat to cruise the canals in Fort Lauderdale. The only good thing about this cruise was the price. I hindsight we probably should have paid more & gone with another company. The "Sea Porsche" is old & kind of run down. & small. Seating area isn't large enough for 6 people Its fairly clean but smells horrible inside. I don't think I would sleep on those beds. One of the bedrooms had a bunch of cushions & junk piled on top of it. The boat was not prepared for us when we arrived. The cushion that goes up front on the bow for laying/sitting out was not installed yet. We had to do it ourselves. I'm sorry but that is just basic customer serror big time. We stopped off at Bokampers in Fort Lauderdale from some food & drinks & when we returned there some kind of animal's poop on the dock right where we had to enter. I would have thought the crew would have cleaned it so no one would step in it & track it into the boat but no. And someone did actually step in it & got it inside the boat. The captain was rude. First of all he too us south out of Port Everglades to look at cargo barges! Really? We wanted to look at yachts & mansions!! He did however accommodate us by dropping us off at Kaluz in Fort Lauderdale however he made us get off the boat at 7:30 instead of 8:00 which is when we had rented it til. Overall very disappointed.

I booked this yacht for my boyfriend's surprise birthday party with Drew after dealing with another company and their bogus contract. Drew's contract was very straightforward and he explained everything it stated, addressing all of my concerns. Drew was very accommodating, especially considering I booked with him only 2 days before the sailing day. He made sure I was comfortable and understood the process of the sailing day. On the day of the sailing, we were welcomed with fresh cookies! Water and soft drinks were also provided on the yacht. Ian was our captain and he too was very nice and accommodating. The ride was awesome! Ian informed us on history and facts about the surrounding mansions and waterfront restaurants. ALL of the guests on the yacht were pleased with this company. It's been a few days since the sail, and they are still telling me how much fun they all had! I would DEFINITELY recommend this company to my family and friends. Hell, I'm thinking about another time I can sail with this company myself again! Thanks Drew and Ian! We truly enjoyed our time!!!!!!

I have done their half day tour(4 hrs) three times now. Booking is very easy go. The boat is just spectacular. If you're looking for a private charter you cannot go wrong. Drew the owner of the boat is very receptive and was there to greet us upon our arrival. The captain was always nice and informative about the intercostal and massive houses on it. I booked them for a girls weekend getaway. I believe we did 4 or 5 hours and it was so worth it. The staff was very professional and the captain of the boat was very friendly, he drove us out to the sand bar where we met some other awesome people. The area we boated around was great and surrounded by beautiful homes. I would absolutely recommend them and will be using them again if I find myself down in FL.
