Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Candyscape, built in 1994 by Italian shipyard Benetti, is a timeless superyacht with a unique and well-dressed interior to match. With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she features exterior design by Stefano Natucci while her interior is the work of Candy and Candy. This fine entertaining vessel measures 44.76 metres and can accommodate up to 12 guests.

The motor yacht has experienced several name changes as well as an extensive 2005/2006 refit in her 15 year existence. Previously known as Ambrosia, Ambrosiana, Lady Lola and Lady Christina of Merseyside, Candyscape was originally constructed for the private use of one of Benetti’s owners. It is now in the hands of Candy and Candy owners Nick and Christian Candy.

Candyscape is the first yacht to feature design by luxury lifestyle consulting firm Candy and Candy, usually known for their high-end residential designs. With such a different design team behind its interior overhaul, the design of the yacht resembles a luxury on-land residence in the guise of a traditional superyacht.

Rare fabrics appear as standard, with hand-painted silk curtains in the salon and vintage materials and patterns used throughout including 1930s dress patterns and classics from designer Ozzie Clark. Particular features of the luxury vessel include crew uniforms especially designed with the help of Alasdhair Willis, husband of fashion designer Stella McCartney, and guest accommodations fully stocked with Jo Malone products.

The media room carries a collection of books that are predominantly a mixture of modern art, fashion and interior design. Here can also be found a range of entertainment options including a projection screen, plasma TV, and Kaleidescape DVD video system. Adjacent to the media room is the powder room featuring unique Louis Vuitton upholstery made up of several disassembled monogrammed suitcases from the high-end designer complete with handles and buckles. The main deck also houses a formal dining area for up to 12 guests with a large table easily convertible into a roulette table. Al-fresco dining options are offered on the aft deck.

Luxury motor yacht Candyscape’s upper deck combines a Jacuzzi with extensive space for sunbathing. Also on the top deck is a barbeque, round table, bar and dumb waiter that provides easy access to the galley.

Amongst her six cabins are an indulgent master suite; two double staterooms; and two twin staterooms. Located on the main deck, the master suite features a private office and generous marble en suite complete with Jacuzzi. The guest rooms can all be found on the lower deck and also feature en suite facilities.

Featuring a dedicated crew, Candyscape is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at 15 knots while her crew of 10 ensure the needs of every guest are met.

The luxury motor yacht is equipped with an armada of water toys to provide endless entertainment during any yacht charter. Onboard water toys include a Nautica tender, Jet Skis, kayak, water skis, ski boards, donuts and a banana stored aft of the bridge deck.

Candyscape’s home port is Monaco and she cruises the West Mediterranean during the summer and winter charter seasons. Particular sailing areas include the French and Italian Rivieras, Corsica and Sardinia.

Nick Candy is selling his £54m superyacht while he builds a better one

By Annabelle Spranklen

Nick Candy's Incredible 54m Superyacht Is Looking For A New Owner

If you’re in the market for a new superyacht , Nick Candy’s whopping number might be just what you’re looking for.

The billionaire property tycoon has announced that his lavish superyacht, named 11.11, is now on the market for 59,500,000 Euros (£53,758,547.50) but you better be quick.

The 63-metre long vessel was built in 2015 by the prestigious Italian yacht builder Benetti and scooped a World Superyacht Award in 2016. Candy expects it to be snapped up quickly after demand for high-spec yachts surged during the pandemic, with the super-rich looking for ways to travel in the most Covid-safe way.

Candy said in a statement,'I've been approached over the last few years to sell it – often by charter guests who after spending one or two weeks on board want to buy it – but I've always said no.

Image may contain: Transportation, Vehicle, Boat, Yacht, Vessel, and Watercraft

'I'm currently nine months down the line with designs for a new and bigger yacht, so now feels like a good time to sell, especially as there is increasing demand for superyachts which are viewed as a safer alternative to shore-based travel due to their natural isolation and self-sufficiency.'

The new owner will find stunning Art Deco-style interiors inside, designed to be brief by Candy and his wife, former actress and singer, Holly Valance. There’s plenty of space for large groups of friends and family. The VIP suite has its own separate lounge and marble bathroom, while the master suite comes with its own private deck, 180-degree views and jet pool. There’s also a nursery and four further guest cabins.

Days can be spent soaking up the rays from the split-level sundeck, with its large Jacuzzi pool and bar. There’s also an on-board spa with a treatment room and steam room, helipad for ferrying guests, a trampoline and a climbing wall, plus heaps of water toys to keep you busy.

Candy said: 'We have made some amazing memories on board over the past five years. The service level on board 11.11 is like no five-star hotel on the planet.

Master bedroom

'The crew have taken service, food, hospitality, and maintenance of a superyacht to a whole new level but it's time to move on and build something new that works for our family and lifestyle in the future.

Sun deck with pool

'I have always had a passion for yachts and get huge enjoyment from the project side of building and designing a boat – it is not dissimilar to building a house or an apartment building.'

11.11 is available to buy through Y.CO

candy and candy yacht

The new Benetti “Lady Candy” is 56 meters of style, class and superior performance. A marriage of East and West, Lady Candy offers the ultimate in comfort, beauty, and technology, for a relaxing cruising experience.

The style of Italian yacht design masters, the Benetti boatyard’s technological prowess, and the Owner’s magic touch of the East combine to create a 56-meter yacht whose class is matched only by its outstanding performance: Lady Candy, the latest jewel of the Benetti family.

The Benetti boatyard in Livorno launched the M/Y Lady Candy (Unit No. FB260). A yacht 100 percent steel and aluminium, the 56-meter vessel is built on a time-tested naval architecture platform with proven dependability in previous yachts. For Lady Candy, this platform was partially modified with the repositioning of the wheelhouse on the sun deck and the associated widening of the beam.

“Lady Candy” combines interior spaces worthy of a 56-meter vessel with outstanding performance, including a maximum speed of nearly 17 knots, comfort which translates into stability, and almost zero associated vibrations and noise. With naval design from Benetti together with styling from Captain Paul Brackley’s Central Yacht Design Studio, the exterior lines of “Lady Candy” have a clearly contemporary feel without diminishing the timeless elegance Benetti yachts are known for.

The 962-ton vessel is majestic yet streamlined, with the five decks highlighted by a harmonious movement stemming from the contrast of the long bands of tinted windows at the upper decks against the white hull.

The expert Owner is from Asia and is a great enthusiast of the sea and diving. He plans to enjoy Lady Candy together with his family and friends. The Owner played an active role in the design of his yacht; he had a particularly strong impact on the interior layout, which was custom-designed for him by Central Yacht. For example, the Owner explicitly requested that the interiors be given priority over the exteriors, creating an enormous and exciting main saloon that covers 88 square meters of the main deck; he also had his and his daughter’s cabins moved to the upper deck to maximize privacy.

The Owner was also directly involved in the interior styling and furnishing, which was designed by Central Yacht and the American interior architecture firm BAMO (the latter having just furnished some of the Owner’s other properties). The interiors are simple and welcoming. Briar root wood predominates and is combined with soft colors like lilac and jade, reflecting an “international” aesthetic that unites the East and West. For example, since the Owner is a diving and underwater enthusiast, the opportunity could not be passed up to locate a fully equipped beach club, complete with bar, gymnasium, steam shower, bathroom and living area right next to the swimming platform, including separate entrances for guests and crew.

In terms of performance, “Lady Candy” enables sustained speeds and optimal cruising comfort. Maximum speed is approximately 17 knots, while cruising speed is 16 knots. Fuel-economy speed is 12 knots, with a range of 5,000 nautical miles. The engine room has two 1.320 kW MTU 12V 4000 engines and two 175 kW Cat C9 Genset generators.

Lady Candy – Benetti's 56m superyacht benefits from her unusual yet practical layout

As designers and owner’s representatives on 56-metre Benetti Lady Candy , Captain Paul Brackley, engineer Brett Mitchell and the rest of the team at Central Yacht used the ethos of ‘form follows function’ to develop a highly efficient design, which improves service and onboard experience. It’s evident in every aspect of the yacht, from the stowage of crockery to what guests hear, see and smell, from the exterior styling to – perhaps most fundamentally – the layout.

Captain Brackley (also captain of Lady Candy ) believes the aft of a yacht, commonly the location of the tender garage, is the roughest place from which to launch a boat. He also feels the water level aft is one of the loveliest spots on board to sit, ‘I think it’s much nicer than seeing the ocean in front, it’s more calming, more relaxing to watch the wake,’ he says.

Instead of an aft garage common on yachts of this size, Brackley designed an enclosed aft beach club with a bar, comfortable seating and ‘portholes (rather than windows) for safety, because we are at water level’ for gazing at that wake. To starboard is a gym separated from the social space by a glass partition. Indoor stairs as well as exterior ones mean the beach club is usable even during bad weather or in a marina.

The tender has been given a home in a garage forward on the main deck, from where it is launched bow-first with a crane (pictured below). ‘The captain and owner were amazed at how stable it was, even when you launch the tender – which weighs over one tonne – there is not movement from one side to another,’ says Marco de Cosmo, Benetti’s project manager on Lady Candy. ‘It comes from the fact that the volume of the hull is quite large for a 56 metre, so it’s able to balance itself.’

This unusual layout also includes a cinema forward on the main deck, more traditionally the location of the owner’s suite. ‘This is often referred to as prime real estate,’ says Brackley. ‘But that area is actually the most uncomfortable part of the boat in terms of motion and you have the noise of the bow thruster, the anchor chains – to me that is not a good place for an owner’s cabin.’

The owner’s suite has instead been placed on the upper deck aft and it is nearly matched in size and comfort by the VIP suite forward. While private, the boat was originally designed with charter in mind and this arrangement would avoid two principals arguing over who gets the best cabin.

The owner’s suite aft is a flexible space. Forward is a comfortable seating area with a fireplace and bar, and alongside it an office – both spaces well lit through huge windows. Aft through the office is a dressing room then the cabin itself, looking on to a large private terrace. Shoji screen-inspired sliding doors – two glass planes with a layer of light fabric pressed within them – can sequester all these spaces into an impressive owner’s apartment, while still allowing light through. The office and cabin can also be screened from the sitting room. Alternatively, the cabin and dressing room of the suite can be screened off and the office and sitting room opened up to become shared spaces with the VIP.

But just as considered as the positioning of spaces is the practical planning within them. This includes keeping spaces bright: between the two suites and separated from the lobby by glass is a massage room with a long picture window, which spills daylight into the lobby and through the shoji doors.

It also involves keeping accommodation private: the entrance hall in the VIP and the sitting room in the owner’s suite are both arranged so that you don’t see the cabin beds upon entering, while the VIP’s forward terrace offers views out but is largely invisible from the crew’s private foredeck.

Brackley also employs design tricks to imbue spaces with a desired atmosphere: the owner’s deck aft has a residential feeling of solidity and substance. ‘The balcony cut-down is symmetrical, very square, much more like a house than a yacht,’ says Brackley.

Downstairs in the main social areas such planning is also in evidence, generally to improve service. Between the practical galley and the open-plan main and dining saloons, a dogleg corridor prevents kitchen noise reaching guests’ ears. Meanwhile, often-accessed technical spaces throughout the boat, such as fan coils and lighting controls, have been put behind easy-to-open panels to save man hours.

Even up on the relaxed sun deck, an exacting attitude to service is at work. In a pantry just forward of the outdoor area a dumbwaiter carries dirty dishes to a dishwasher next to the crockery store on the upper deck, so they can be immediately put away. Echoing the main saloon planning for kitchen/guest separation, an extractor fan on the barbecue in the wet bar ensures guests aren’t bothered by cooking smells. The aft sun deck itself is topped with a loop of superstructure that can be rigged with a pavilion-style tent for shade over the dining table, with four lights in the superstructure and a spa pool aft.

‘The owner didn’t want a substantial [spa pool] in the middle of the sundeck,’ says Brackley. ‘Normally they have an overflow tank – as the boat moves, the water overflows – which is bulky. So I designed the overflow tank into the seat, which has a unique fibreglass construction. It’s a solution that allowed us to build a really small [spa pool].’

This spa pool is separated from the dining table by a glass screen, which gives an open feeling while stopping water splashing on diners. For extra effect a waterfall spills into the pool from the top of the glass, which in the evening can be used as a screen for films or music videos from a projector built into the superstructure.

Forward on the same deck, the wheelhouse is as well planned as you’d expect from such an exacting captain. ‘The windscreen is angled slightly out – it’s not noticeable from outside but you don’t get reflections from console lights,’ he says. For the same reason the warning LED lights often found on the aft wall of a wheelhouse have been relocated.

The interior design of Lady Candy was planned by Central Yacht and decorated by Pamela Babey of US home and commercial decorator BAMO Inc. It is Asian influenced and features light woods such as birch and limed oak, with neutral tones and greens and yellows in carpets and glassware. Touches of gold, such as the painted leather wall-mounted artwork in the dining saloon, plus a variety of marbles in dayheads, lobbies and en suites, add a richer element. The scheme varies in tone: in the lower deck guest cabins it is simple and neutral; in the main and VIPs it is more decorative.

No less attention was paid to the exterior. Brackley minimised style lines to keep the yacht from looking dated in years to come. The cream shade ‘moondust’ was chosen for a paint job when the owner saw a model of the yacht painted in that shade, with white touches and black strips of tinted windows for contrast. These windows are flush for a sleek look, maximising interior spaces and for easy cleaning inside and out (a job made safer on the exterior by subtle footholds built into the structure).

It certainly seems that together with Benetti’s craftsmanship, Central Yacht’s thousands of calculations have added up to a very fine superyacht.

Daryl Hannah Was Working on a John Candy 'Love Story' When He Died: 'He Would've Been My Romantic Lead' (Exclusive)

D aryl Hannah, who starred with John Candy in 1984's 'Splash,' remembers the late actor as "such a beam of warmth and light and humor"

Daryl Hannah is remembering her late costar John Candy — and their project that could have been.

“What a great man,” she tells PEOPLE when asked about the March 4 anniversary of his death. “He was just so lovely.”

On the set of 1984’s Splash , directed by Ron Howard and co-starring Tom Hanks , Hannah, 63, recalls Candy as “such a beam of warmth and light and humor, just wonderful. I just loved him.”

Hannah starred as Madison, a mermaid who arrives on land and disguises herself as a human to return the wallet of Allen, played by Hanks. Eugene Levy played the conniving Dr. Walter Kornbluth, while Candy played Freddie, Allen’s boisterous and womanizing brother.

Thinking about Candy’s loss 30 years later, and 40 years after they bonded on set, is “so sad,” says Hannah. When she would remain half-submerged during lunch breaks, burdened by her elaborate mermaid tail , “John would come by and drop little french fries in my mouth,” she remembers.

Their friendship continued after filming the boy-meets-mermaid rom-com hit. In 2016, Hannah described Candy as “tears-coming-out-of-your-eyes, pee-your-pants hilarious” to Empire .

Doing press together, she recalled, "I used to sit on his lap all the time and he would talk for me and I'd mime what he was saying like a ventriloquist doll. He'd answer questions for me in interviews."

Had the Spaceballs and Cool Runnings star not tragically died of cardiac arrest at age 43, Hannah tells PEOPLE the two would have collaborated again — with many of the same team members from Splash .

“Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel were writing the script,” she says of two of the screenwriters behind Splash , who earned an Academy Award nomination for the movie.

The project “was something that I kind of made up,” says Hannah, “sort of a love story.”

Candy, she adds, “would've been my romantic lead.”

Candy was survived by wife Rosemary and their two children, Christopher and Jennifer. On the 30th anniversary of the Canadian star’s death, fellow actors remembered him as a generous collaborator and friend.

“He just taught me a lot about being a great scene partner,” Laurie Metcalf , who starred with Candy in 1989’s Uncle Buck , told PEOPLE.

“I hadn't done hardly any movies,” she added. “He was good at reading people and knowing what would make them comfortable.”

“John’s comedy lives on, but my memory of him has the words ‘kindness’ and ‘sweetness’ in the headlines,” said Steve Martin , his costar on 1987's Planes, Trains and Automobiles .

Candy Darling

The Story of Candy Darling, a Trans Icon and Warhol Superstar

As an expansive new biography on candy darling is published, author cynthia carr talks about transness, writing a cultural history of new york in the 1960s and 70s, and getting justice for the dead.

In November 1972, Candy Darling arrived in Hollywood for the premiere of Women in Revolt , Andy Warhol’s improvised take on the burgeoning feminist movement. He had asked her to star: “You better be nice to Paul [Morrissey] and not complain and not wear too much lipstick because you’re supposed to be a rich girl and, uh, rich girls don’t do that anymore.” Candy replied: “I know what rich girls do, Andy.”

At midnight Candy walked into Schwab’s, the fabled Hollywood hangout, wearing a six-foot-long white fox fur and, with her blonde bombshell looks, received a standing ovation. People who didn’t know who she was still asked for autographs. A performer and model, she was, to quote one writer, the “subculture Lana Turner.” When she’d cross the street back in New York, she’d stop traffic.

“Candy wanted to be remembered,” says Cynthia Carr , author of the new biography Candy Darling: Dreamer, Icon, Superstar about the trans pioneer. Dedicating the book to the trans community, Carr writes: “ As I worked on this biography I saw that community increasingly demonised in ways both cruel and traumatising. May this account of one life make a difference. May you be understood. May you be appreciated. May you be loved.”

Below, the author sits down with Tony Wilkes to discuss Candy’s life, why she belongs to the feminist movement, and releasing the dead from silence.

Candy Darling: Dreamer, Icon, Superstar by Cynthia Carr

Tony Wilkes: Your last book was an award-winning biography of the artist David Wojnarowicz . What made you choose to write about Candy Darling?

Cynthia Carr: What got to me was the stories of the troubles and trauma she faced, the struggle to be a trans person at that time. There was a real contrast between her everyday life and this image, this persona on top of the world. In Manhattan, she was acclaimed. She was glamorous. Warhol was taking her to fancy parties. She got to know socialites and movie stars. She was photographed by so many famous photographers. And then she’d go home and her mother was telling her: ‘Don’t come home until it’s dark. Don’t answer the door. Don’t let anyone see you.’ She had all this prejudice to face that was a big part of her life every day. That was a story I wanted to tell.

TW: I read that it took you ten years to write the book. What was that process like?

CC: I didn’t know that much about her. But I knew who she was. My main source of information was Jeremiah Newton, Candy’s friend. I haven’t even counted the interviews I did with him. I know that the total transcript is longer than the entire book. When I first met him he showed me some of her things he had in a dresser drawer – journals, letters and photos. Plus he had things of hers scattered through various boxes in his house. Everything was jumbled together, so I had to sort through all that.

It was actually more of a challenge to write about Candy than about David. It was so much harder to find the information. She never even had a place to live. She would stay with friends or go to her mother’s house. So her stuff is scattered all over the place. Even more so now. Jeremiah just died in November. He’d already sold things and put things in archives. But a lot of her stuff is just gone now. It’s in a landfill.

Cynthia Carr

TW: What also makes the book so vivid is the voices from your interviews, and also the writing you quote from the time.

CC: I interviewed close to 100 people. Jeremiah had also done interviews back in the 1970s. After Candy died in 1974 he decided to write her biography. He interviewed something like 45 people. But he never wrote the book so he gave me all the tapes. Those were hugely helpful because most of those people had died by the time I started [in 2013]. Like the woman who ran the beauty parlour where Candy worked as a teenager. Candy’s mother. Various Off-Off Broadway directors like Tom Eyen. It was really valuable.

I also went to various archives. I went through old issues of the Village Voice just for a sense of context from when she started performing in 1967 up until her death in 1974. I looked at every page. Because in a way I think of the book as a cultural history of that period in New York. It’s the beginning of Off-Off Broadway. It’s the beginning of second-wave feminism. It’s the beginning of the gay rights movement. All those things are happening.

“I think of the book as a cultural history of that period in New York. It’s the beginning of Off-Off Broadway. It’s the beginning of second-wave feminism. It’s the beginning of the gay rights movement” – Cynthia Carr

TW: You argue very early on in the book that Candy predates many of the conversations about gender going on now.

CC: At that point, trans people didn’t have a place in the gay movement or the women’s movement. I was part of the feminist movement back in the 70s. We were just starting to ask questions about gender. And we thought we had it all figured out. [Laughs]. But we didn’t. I think that now we’ve figured out that maybe feminism should be about rejecting the gender binary. People weren’t thinking that way back then.

TW: Candy herself was largely apolitical. She never voted. She wasn’t part of those movements. But you make the point that her very existence was political and radical.

CC: I do wonder if she would have changed her mind if she’d lived longer. She had just turned 29 when she died [of cancer]. Maybe she would have started thinking differently. But she didn’t see herself as part of the gay movement or the women’s movement. But she was. I think her presence allows us to ask questions about gender. What does it mean to be feminine? Does your gender require a certain look and why? Things that we could ask now but weren’t asked then – or at least not very much.

Candy Darling

TW: Did anything you found in your research really surprise you?

CC: One thing that was unusual to me was her interest in Christian Science. She never talked about it, it was only in her journals. All this interest in other esoteric forms of religion that I call metaphysical. It’s about how you can control your body with your mind. She believed in God. She was born a Catholic but that wasn’t going to work. So she was trying out other approaches of how to have faith.

I have Candy’s copy of Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. It took me many years to find it. It’s filled with her underlinings and notes written in the margins. She really studied it. And Jeremiah told me that she would carry it with her everywhere. In this book, I found a passage where Eddy is talking about the two genders. And Candy has written, in pink ink, “only two? I think more than two exist.” That’s the most I ever found of her talking about gender. In everyday life, she did not go there.

TW: There’s a wonderful quip from Candy you quote in the book: “My business is not acting. My business is the Candy Darling business. This I built myself.” It encapsulates this paradox you write about, that Candy’s true self was also very much a performance.

CC: There’s a theatre director called Joseph Chaikin who wrote that when you’re an actor you put on a mask, but sometimes the mask turns into your face. I think that happened with her. She developed this persona and she became it. For me, it was a very tricky thing because I don’t think she was acting all the time. But she was also so guarded. I had to walk a line there. But she wasn’t a phoney. She couldn’t have been. She lived that way all the time.

Candy Darling

TW: You’ve spoken already about the terrible treatment she had to endure all through her life, a life that was fabulous but also very disturbing. The question I had when finishing the book is: how we can do right by her now?

CC: It’s why I choose to write the things I write. The first book I ever wrote was about a lynching that happened in my father’s hometown in Indiana. There’s a very famous picture of it that most Americans have seen: two men hanging from a tree and all these white people standing below. One’s pointing at the dead bodies. And they’re celebrating. That was the big question of that book. How do we do right by the people who were lynched?

One thing I found when writing that book was from a Chilean writer called José Zalaquett. What he said was “truth does not bring back the dead but releases them from silence.” You can’t bring people back from the dead. You can’t make it better for them. But you can make sure that people know about them, that people know what happened. That’s important. To say what happened. It’s a way of getting justice for them. That’s what draws me to the people I write about. Mostly they’re marginalised and going against the grain. I want their stories out there.

Candy Darling: Dreamer, Icon, Superstar by Cynthia Carr is published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and is out now.
