GREEK SHIPPING MIRACLE

The N.J. Goulandris Group founded in 1953 is one of the most distinguished successors of the Goulandris renowned shipping family from the island of Andros.

Ioannis P. Goulandris (1840-1927) , founder of the family, was a master mariner and owner of sailing ships in the second half of the 19th century, before taking over as captain on steamships of his great compatriot shipowner Dimitrios Moraitis. In 1901 he became a minority partner in a six-year old steamer, the CORNILIOS, acquired by his relative Cleanthis A. Polemis and Menelaos Cornilakis, a rich merchant from the island of Syros. The ship sailed until February 7, 1910 when she was wrecked.                                                         In August 1910, Ioannis P. Goulandris supported by his five sons, Petros (1877-1931), Michael (1878-1935), Vassilios (1886-1976), Nicholas (1891-1957) and later Leonidas (1902-1952), and financially assisted by his compatriot Epaminondas C. Embiricos, managed to acquire a British steamship which was renamed IOANNIS P. GOULANDRIS. Three years later, one more steamship, which was renamed MARIONGA GOULANDRIS, was added to his fleet.

Both ships achieved significant earnings from their operation during World War I, but were lost through enemy action in May and June 1917 respectively. The family remained without ships, but had in the meantime accumulated substantial sums in cash.

The sons of Ioannis P. Goulandris returned to shipping business in 1924, acquiring good quality second-hand ships at very attractive prices. They had already set up offices in Athens and London, which apart from serving the growing family fleet, served as a starting point for the development of several shipowners from the island of Andros, by financing and managing until the beginning of World War II about 40 ships owned by their compatriots.

In 1927 Ioannis P. Goulandris passed away. The following year, there was an important change within the structure of the family group; Petros J. Goulandris, the eldest brother, acquired a steamship of his own. This acquisition marked the beginning of a new Goulandris enterprise which operated from independent offices in Athens. Three years later, however, Petros J. Goulandris suddenly passed away and the ship was placed under the management of Goulandris Bros. until 1937 when his children established an individual office under the name “Heirs of the late Petros J. Goulandris”.

In the meantime, the progress of the Goulandris Bros. enterprise during the 1930s had been impressive. They took advantage of the serious downfall in ship values following the deep economic crisis that followed the 1929-crash of the New York Stock Exchange and, between the years 1932 and 1936 added no less than seven more steamships to the family fleet.

In 1935 the family mourned the loss of another of its members with the passing away of Michael J. Goulandris. Two years later, his heirs decided to act independently with the acquisition of a steamship, which was yet lost during the War.

Just before the outbreak of World War II, the three remaining brothers Vassilios, Nicholas and Leonidas J. Goulandris decided to re-establish the transatlantic line, which had been at a standstill since 1935 following the demise of National Steam Navigation of Greece, which had been founded by the Embiricos family. In this context, in 1939 they acquired the British passenger ship TUSCANIA, built in 1922, which was renamed NEA HELLAS and was also registered in Andros.

During World War II the Greek merchant fleet was devastated, having lost over 75% of its pre-war power. The Goulandris Bros. Group suffered enormous losses. At the end of the War only a couple of its pre-war steamships, the ANNA N. GOULANDRIS and the PETROS J. GOULANDRIS had survived. The passenger ship NEA HELLAS, which was requisitioned by the British and operated as a troop carrier during the War, had also miraculously survived; despite the fact that she was torpedoed and damaged by a German submarine.

The first post-war years

The post-war reconstruction of the Goulandris Bros. shipping enterprise proved to be a Herculean task, which was accomplished thanks to the determination of its principals. The traditional Goulandris family Group had remained under the control of the three brothers, Vassilios, Nicholas and Leonidas. At the same time, a new generation of family members were already active within the Group; Vassilios’ sons, John and Constantine, Nicholas' sons, Giannis, Alecos and Leonidas and finally Leonidas’ son, Giannis.

Under extremely adverse circumstances, and especially given the fact that the civil war that had broken out in Greece did not allow any serious business activity to develop, Goulandris Bros., as well as most of the Greek shipowners, had to continue their shipping business from abroad –mainly in the United States of America and the UK– acquiring ships under foreign flags. Goulandris Bros. became active mainly in the Canadian market and established companies which, from 1946 for a period of few years, operated a significant number of ships built there during the War. A number of other British flag ships, also mainly constructed during the War, were placed under the Goulandris Bros. management in London. Among them there was an aircraft carrier, the EMPIRE MACKENDRICK, built in Scotland in 1943, which was converted into a cargo ship and sailed under British flag as the GRANPOND.

Beyond the above ships, Goulandris Bros acquired two Liberty type ships –from the 98 sold to Greek owners by the US Government at the end of 1946 and early 1947. At the same time, the Group continued operating ships belonging to other owners from the island of Andros, thus assisting their compatriots towards the post-war reconstruction of their fleets.

The family Group also continued being involved in passenger shipping. Apart from the NEA HELLAS, which had been placed again under their management in 1947, three more units were added to their fleet. These were the CANBERRA, the NEPTUNIA and the COLUMBIA, all placed under Panamanian flag.

At the beginning of 1952 however, the passenger fleet was separated from the Group following an agreement between the three brothers. Vassilios and Nicholas maintained the cargo ship fleet whereas Leonidas took over the passenger fleet, to which a newbuilding, the OLYMPIA, built by the Alexander Stephen shipyard at Glasgow, was due to be delivered in 1953. However, in September 1952 Leonidas J. Goulandris suddenly passed away and the passenger shipping enterprise, which became widely known as the Greek Line, was continued by his son Giannis.

At about the same time, the Nicholas J. Goulandris Sons acquired the Liberty type cargo ship SEAPIONEER, which was renamed LAMYRA, from their relatives P.J. Goulandris Sons. The vessel was registered in Panama and was placed under the management of an independent office in New York, the United Operators Shipping Agencies Corp.

The N.J. Goulandris Group

The establishment of the N.J. Goulandris Group took place in 1953 when the family of Nicholas J. Goulandris decided to separate its business activities from the parent company, Goulandris Bros. The separation resulted in the formation of a new office in London under the name N.J. Goulandris Ltd. At the same time, another office was established in Piraeus, Andriaki Shipping Ltd., which took over the management of the Liberty type cargo ship LAMYRA, as well as three more similar type ships which were acquired in 1953.

At the same year of its establishment, the new group took delivery and placed under its management its first newbuilding. It was the tanker LEONIDAS –being a joint venture of the N.J. Goulandris family with their relatives, the Condylis family– constructed by the Nippon Kokan K.K. shipyard at Shimizu, Japan. It further marked the start of an extraordinary bond between the Group and Japanese shipyards –which has produced up to now 69 units– marking the entrance of the Group into a new field of maritime activity, where they were destined to become among the world’s leading players.

By the end of 1953, and while the sons of Nicholas J. Goulandris were busy planning a large shipbuilding programme in Japan, the transfer of several cargo ships operated up to then by Goulandris Bros. to the new Group, started taking place according to prior agreements that had been made within the family. Every transfer was effected upon the completion of each ship’s commitments towards its charterers. The first ship that joined the new Group’s fleet was the CONDOR in 1953 followed in 1954 by five cargo ships built during the War. Another addition to the fleet was one of the two steamships that had survived the War, the ANNA N. GOULANDRIS which was renamed ANNA. Furthermore, there were also five new acquisitions, four of which were Liberty type ships. At the same time, the new group placed under its management several cargo ships belonging to other owners from the island of Andros, a practice that was followed up until 1963.

In 1955, one more Liberty type ship was acquired and added to the fleet. The next year was however a milestone for the N.J. Goulandris Group as during its course a total of six newbuildings were delivered to its management from Japanese shipyards. The ships were the tankers ALEXANDRA I and MARIETTA, the cargo ships DEVON and CORNWALL and the bulk carriers ARAGON and GRANADA. The two bulk carriers went on record as the first newly-built Greek owned ships of this type. They also marked the beginning of the heavy involvement of Greeks in a new field of transportation activity, the dry bulk trade, in which they were to demonstrate excellent performance over the next decades and until today.

In the same year and while his family’s newly-founded Group was setting high goals towards its evolution, Nicholas J. Goulandris took the initiative to honour the Greek Seafarer by commissioning the renowned Greek sculptor Michael Tombros with the construction of a giant statue for the Unknown Sailor. The statue would be placed on a central square in his birthplace Andros. Beyond the cost for the construction of the above statue, Nicholas J. Goulandris and his family undertook to renovate an old traditional building located in the same square which was planned to become a maritime museum.

In 1957, the Group’s fleet was further strengthened through the addition of five more newbuildings and another cargo ship from the Goulandris Bros. operation. The newbuildings were the cargo ships NAVARINO and ARGYLL and the tankers MARATHON, CASTELLA and ANNA. A sad event, however, shadowed this productive year for the Group, the passing away of Nicholas J. Goulandris, whose work was to be continued by his sons Giannis, Alecos, Leonidas and his daughter Anna.

The following years were difficult for world shipping as the market went sharply down forcing many ships into lay-up berths. Despite this development, the N.J. Goulandris Group continued its impressive growth by adding more ships to its fleet, both newbuildings and second hand ones. In 1958, two more Liberty type ships were acquired, while at the same time four newbuildings, the tankers NEAPOLIS and VIOLANDA and the cargo ships DERBY and DORSET further enhanced the quality of the fleet operated by the Group. It is worth mentioning that the VIOLANDA was the largest tanker built until then in Japan, and moreover was sponsored by the wife of the Emperor’s brother, princess Takamatsu. This was an outstanding honour for the Group, the tanker being the first foreign-owned ship built in Japan sponsored by a member of the Imperial Family. This was indicative of the Japanese appreciation for the great support the N.J. Goulandris Group was offering to their shipbuilding industry through its extensive newbuilding programme.

In 1959 there were further additions to the fleet. The newly-built tanker ANTIPOLIS was the first newbuilding of the Group to be registered in their homeland Andros. At the same time, a French T2 type tanker came into the fleet. On 5 November 1959, during a grand ceremony in the island of Andros, the statue of the Unknown Sailor was revealed in the presence of the Greek Royal Family.

At the end of the first post-war decade, the N.J. Goulandris Group fleet was further strengthened through the addition of three newbuildings and two second-hand tankers. In particular, two bulk carriers were delivered, the sister ships LACONIA and MESSINIA, as well as the tanker ship ATTICA. Moreover, two tanker ships acquired and renamed MILITOS and EFESSOS, both under Liberian flag.

At the beginning of the 1960s, shipping was still in heavy crisis. Despite this, the N.J. Goulandris Group continued its growth in terms of new acquisitions as the majority of its ships were employed on a long term basis by first class charterers, a policy adopted since the early years of its establishment. Whereas the pace of taking newbuilding deliveries was slowed down, especially during the first years of the decade, the tally of newbuildings delivered to the Group until its end were an impressive 17 units joined by five ships of different type from the second-hand market.

In particular, the bulk carrier AETOLIA and the cargo ship APOLLONIA were delivered by their builders in 1961 and the cargo ship LINDOS in 1962. In 1963, two sister tankers the PERSEPOLIS and the CORINTHOS were delivered, while a British second hand tanker came into the fleet as the AMPHIALOS. In 1964 there were four more newbuilding additions to the tanker fleet of the Group, the sister ships NICHOLAS J. GOULANDRIS and PRINCESS ANNE-MARIE and another pair of sister tankers, the TRIPOLIS and the ARGOLIS. In the same year, a bulk carrier, TOKYO OLYMPICS was delivered from Fuginagata shipyard marking the 30th newbuilding constructed in Japan and placed under the N.J. Goulandris Group operation. On this occasion, and during the delivery of the above ship, the Minister of Transportation Shutaro Matsuura, on behalf of the Japanese Government, honoured the N.J. Goulandris Group “in acknowledgement of distinguished contribution rendered to the development and progress of the shipbuilding industry of Japan”. The same shipyards delivered to the Group two more bulk carriers in March 1965 and July 1966, the ANDROS and the ANTIGUA respectively, whereas in 1965 Uraga shipyard delivered the tanker MICHAEL J. GOULANDRIS. In November 1967, the Group took delivery of its first and only ore/oil carrier, the CALEDONIA. During the same year, the cargo ship OCEANIC, built in 1961 for a company controlled by relatives of the family, joined the fleet retaining the same name.

The year 1968 was a special one for the Group and for Greek shipping in general, as in June 1968 the delivery of NICHOLAS J. GOULANDRIS from the Sakai facility of the Hitachi Group marked the registration of the first VLCC under the Greek flag and the biggest ship ever delivered up to that time to Greek interests. Within the same year, one more tanker from the second-hand market was added to the fleet as the CLARENTIA. Two more second-hand tankers delivered in 1969 and renamed MANTINIA and ROMELIA were additional acquisitions in an extremely productive decade for the Group which included another important initiative by its principals. This was the acquisition of the Neorion Shipyard on Syros island, a historic ship repair-facility belonging to traditional shipowners Nicholas and Minas Rethymnis.

This important investment was not merely another business venture by the principals of the Group, but also mirrored their wish to contribute decisively towards the development of the Cyclades group of islands and especially of an island which had played a major role in the evolution of Greek shipping. Over the next years, Neorion shipyards achieved an impressive rate of growth under the control of N.J. Goulandris Group, offering at the same time invaluable work opportunities to a great number of the local population. Beyond the above contribution to the economy of the Cyclades, the N.J. Goulandris family offered to the island of Syros a superb monument to honour the Greek merchant marine, created by the leading contemporary Greek sculptor, Ioannis Pappas. The monument is situated in front of the historic building of the Customs Authorities in the port of Syros. Furthermore, the family donated two newly-built fast patrol boats to the Greek Navy. The boats were built at Neorion and were named N.J. GOULANDRIS I and II. It is also worth mentioning that John N. Goulandris took the initiative to establish within Neorion a facility for the construction of Enfield-type electric-driven cars.

During the early 1970s, the Group invested heavily on building bulk carriers in various Japanese shipyards. Between the years 1970 and 1973 an impressive total 14 ships of this type were delivered to its management. In detail, in 1970 Hitachi shipyards delivered the CORONIA and ALKYONIA. In 1972 the same shipyards delivered the ORESTIA, OLYNTHIA and ANTIOCHIA whereas Sanoyasu shipyards delivered PARALOS, PERGAMOS and PANORMOS and Hakodate shipyards delivered the SAPPORO OLYMPICS and the AVLIS. In 1973 there were four further deliveries, the EVRYALOS and ARIANA from Sanoyasu, the LOKRIS from Hakodate and CARYANDA from Hitachi. In the meantime in 1972, Nippon Kokan K.K. had delivered the VIOLANDO N. GOULANDRIS, a VLCC named after the wife of the Group’s founder.

A different approach to new acquisitions was employed during the second half of the decade. The principals of the Group decided following the rapid changes in the tanker market to strengthen its fleet with newbuildings as well as second-hand units. In 1975, four newly-built tankers joined the fleet, the MARIETTA, EPHESOS, MILITOS and NAFKRATIS. In 1976 a Norwegian and a Liberian tanker were purchased and were renamed PALMYRA and SELEFKIA respectively. In 1977 finally, a British flag tanker was acquired and was placed under the Group’s management as the MARAKANDA.

Just before the end of the decade the Group’s bulk carrier fleet was enhanced through the addition of three second-hand bulk carriers in 1979 and in 1980. Another newly-built tanker, the IONIA, was delivered in 1980 from the Hitachi shipyard facility at Hiroshima.

The 1980s were highlighted by a long and deep crisis that caused major upsets in world shipping. Despite this adverse situation, the N.J. Goulandris Group continued taking deliveries of new ships while at the same time many owners from all over the world were forced to abandon their newbuilding programmes, especially in Japanese shipyards. In 1981 Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries delivered two tankers to the Group, the NEAPOLIS and the ANTIPOLIS followed by another sister ship, the NICOPOLIS in 1983. During the same year, there was one more newbuilding delivery, that of the bulk carrier LAMYRA, while the sister ship ANDROS was delivered in 1985.

In the course of the next ten years, and while the shipping market experienced a slow recovery, the Group maintained a low profile attitude avoiding any further investment in newbuildings. It fully utilised the services of the ships already in the fleet and covered, when necessary, its requirements in tonnage through several acquisitions from the second-hand market.

During the first five years of the 1990s, and while the responsibility of the operation of the Group passed gradually to a new generation, the fleet was further strengthened with the purchase of four second-hand panamax bulk carriers.

In 1995, the inauguration of the restoration of the Tourlitis lighthouse in its original shape took place, during a special ceremony at the Rivas Place in the island of Andros. It is a great monument of the Greek maritime tradition that survived thanks to initiatives of Alecos N. Goulandris and his wife Marietta Goulandris, in memory of their daughter Violanda who had recently passed away.

The year 1995 also marked the return of the Group to the shipyards with the delivery of its first newbuilding in ten years. The ship, a double hull high specification tanker was delivered from the same builder that had delivered the first tanker of the Group in 1953. She was named VENETIA and was the 61st newbuilding delivered to the Group by shipyards in the country of the Rising Sun in 42 years time. Just before the end of the century, in 1999, a second-hand bulk carrier, the AMPHION was added to the Group’s dry cargo fleet.

At the beginning of the new century, the N.J. Goulandris Group, with its management team strengthened with members of the fourth generation since its establishment, initiated a fresh newbuilding programme aiming at the complete renewal of its fleet. For the first time in its history, the Group contracted newbuildings in South Korea taking delivery of two VLCCs, the ARION and VIOLANDO from Samsung Heavy Industries in 2001 and 2003 respectively and of the bulk carrier ASPENDOS from Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, also in 2003. In 2004, a second hand eight year old bulk carrier joined the fleet as the KRONOS. In 2005 the Group returned to Japan to take delivery of the newly-built tanker ARIANNA, constructed by Sasebo Heavy Industries, while two more tankers, the NEAPOLIS and ANTIPOLIS were delivered from the same shipyard on year later.

In 2006, the Group placed orders with Tsuneishi shipyard in Japan for the construction of four bulk carriers of 82,100 dwt. It was followed by another order with Tsuneishi shipyard, in China this time, for the building of two similar size ships. In particular, the Tsuneishi shipyard in Japan delivered the KESARIA in 2009 and the ATTALIA, MYRA and TYANA in 2010; while the Tsuneishi shipyard in China delivered the ANDROS and PELLA in 2010.

Apart from these six newly-built bulk carriers, the Group took delivery of four tanker ships, 164,000 dwt each, by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in South Korea. The VIOLANDO in 2009, the NICOLAOS in 2010 and the MILITOS and EPHESOS in 2012. A VLCC, also built in 2009, the 318,352 dwt LEONIDAS was constructed by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

For over six decades, the N.J. Goulandris family is one of the most qualitative and productive groups within Greek shipping, having a fruitful presence with a total of 79 high quality newbuildings of all main types. This outstanding performance has already well established the Group amongst the leaders in the contemporary history of the Greek Merchant Marine with international distingtion.

Shipowner Alexandros Goulandris wants to revive the Hellenic Navy’s legendary armored cruiser “Averof”! (PHOTOS)

A technically challenging task

These is probably no other Navy ship that has been a part of the her country’s history for almost half a century, being present in the majority of the legendary 20th century naval battles the nation she served fought. The legendary Hellenic Navy armored cruiser “George Averof” has that privilege and the place in history she has earned.

av5

With the heroic Admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis on the bridge she managed almost alone to win two major naval battles (“Battle of Elli” and “Battle of Lemnos”) locking the Ottoman fleet inside the Straits, earning the nickname “Saitan papor” (“Satan’s ship” or “Satanic ship”) by the Turks. Her dominance in the Aegean Sea was instrumental for the course of the Balkan Wars.

After Germany’s attack against Greece in 1941, the ship’s crew disobeyed the orders to scuttle her to avoid capture by the Germans, and sailed to Souda Bay, Crete, under the constant threat of German air strikes.

av2

From Souda Bay she sailed to Alexandria and later on she was assigned to convoy escort and patrol duties in the Indian Ocean. On 17 October 1944, once again as the flagship of the exiled Hellenic Navy, under the command Captain Theodoros Koundouriotis (the Admiral’s son), she carried the Greek government-in-exile back to liberated Athens. She continued as Fleet Headquarters until she was decommissioned in 1952. She remained anchored at Salamis until she was towed to Poros, where she remained from 1956 to 1983.

In 1984 the Navy decided to restore her as a museum ship, and she was towed to Palaio Faliro, where she is anchored as a floating museum. The ship is regarded as in active service, carrying the Rear Admiral’s Rank Flag. Every Hellenic Navy ship entering or sailing in Faliro Bay honours Averof while passing.

av4

Now, 65 year after “Averof” was decommissioned, the famous Greek shipowner Alexandros Goulandris and a handful of dedicated citizens (Hydra’s Ecologists Club) and retired Navy officers, want to revive her and give the opportunity to everyone to see “Lucky Uncle George”, as was its Greek nickname, sail again the Greek seas.

The charity activities of Alexandros Goulandris, as well as his sensitivity on all things that have to do with tradition -and especially the Hellenic maritime tradition- are very well known. The Goulandris family is well respected in Greece with a dominant role in the international shipping community, who nonetheless choose to stay away from the lifestyle world keeping a low profile and allowing their work to do the talking.

al goulandris

But the task seems Herculean. Being anchored for decades has caused damages in many important mechanical parts. Many parts must be replaced or refurbished to pristine condition. Being an 110-year-old cruiser, means that all necessary spare parts must be made purpose from scratch. And some of them are quite complicated pieces of machinery…

Goulandris collection of Modern masterworks finally revealed in new Athens museum

Dream museum of collectors basil and elise goulandris brought to life almost three decades after original proposal.

Outstanding Impressionist and Modern works went on public display in Athens last month with the opening of the new Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum. It has taken 27 years since Basil (1913-94) and his wife Elise’s (1917-2000) proposal for a museum filled with their collection was first made, delayed by bureaucratic obstacles and a legal claim to the collection brought by Basil’s niece, Aspasia Zaimis, which was defeated in 2018.

A powerful native cultural heritage tends to crowd out an international approach in a country’s museums, and until now there was nowhere in Greece where the public could see works by 19th- and 20th-century European masters. The new museum has remedied this with works that even a rich US museum would struggle to put together today, by Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Braque, Picasso, Miró, Kandinsky, Klee, Pollock, Giacometti and Bacon, among others.

These are not minor examples of their work. A large Picasso of a woman with raised arms relates to the Demoiselles d’Avignon, painted in 1907. There is a rose-tinted façade of Rouen cathedral by Monet as well as Van Gogh’s flaming avenue of poplars and disciplined still-life dominated by a black coffee pot, both from 1888.

Some of the most famous galleries of the second half of the 20th century helped shape the Goulandris collection: Wildenstein in its heyday, Acquavella, Daniel Varenne in Geneva and Ernst Beyeler, who became a close friend of the couple and encouraged the idea of creating a museum. The auction houses played their part, especially Sotheby’s, with Simon de Pury advising Elise.

Basil Goulandris made his fortune from the Orion Shipping and Trading Company after the Second World War. He entered the big collecting league in 1957, when he bid a then record $297,000 for a still-life by Gauguin. The Goulandrises built their collection together and, unlike today’s buyers, did not keep it in a freeport but lived with it, moving works from their chalet in Gstaad to their apartment in Avenue Foch in Paris, and even to their yacht, the Paloma.

In 1979, the couple established their foundation and inaugurated Greece’s first contemporary art museum on the island of Andros, Basil’s birthplace, which held a collection of Greek art and hosted exhibitions every summer from 1986 of artists including Balthus, Dalí, Man Ray, Richter and Kiefer.

The architect I.M. Pei was a friend, and in 1993 the couple commissioned him to design a museum in Athens. He came up with a pale limestone design with the feel of a church, inspired by Christian rather than classical Greece: a soaring hexagonal hall, windows fitted with translucent alabaster panes to filter the light and an enclosed garden with a fountain surrounded by orange trees. But the classical past interfered; the chosen site was abandoned in 1997 after the ruins of the Lyceum, where Aristotle taught his students, were discovered there.

Another location fell through largely due to the hostility of the local residents, who did not want crowds in their neighbourhood. Finally, the foundation led by Kyriakos Koutsomallis decided to adapt an existing building in Pangrati, a central neighbourhood with views of the Parthenon. It is on 11 floors, complete with lecture theatre, library, education department, restaurant and temporary exhibition space (opening in 2020). The works collected by the Goulandrises are on the lower floors, while the Modern and contemporary Greek art acquired by the foundation in recent years are above. All the running costs are covered by the foundation.

Last year, as Greece lurched through yet another financial crisis, a Greek shipping tycoon based in London decided to open a new bank account in Britain. The minimum deposit was £15m, but that was no problem because he's worth £200m. As part of the due diligence process, however, he had to demonstrate proof of address at home in Greece. So he simply produced his Greek benefits claim form, with his Athens address on it. 'The guy's worth £200m, but as it's all out of the country, he's claiming £140 or £200 a month back home - and he found it very funny,' says a Greek friend of mine, who also works in shipping, from his beige office in Mayfair.

London has been home to rich Greeks for decades. King George II of Greece lived in Brown's Hotel while in exile in the Thirties and during the Second World War - 'The most important tool for a king of Greece is a suitcase,' he joked at the time. His nephew, the ousted King Constantine II, lived in a house overlooking Hampstead Heath from the early Seventies until three years ago, when he and his wife, Queen Anne-Marie, moved back to Athens. Constantine's oldest son, Crown  Prince Pavlos, still lives in Chelsea with his wife, Marie-Chantal, and their five blonde children, the Greeces. As for many other rich tribes - Russians, Gulf Arabs, Nigerians - London is the place to be, for business, for the law, for the education system and for security.

But since 2010, after the extent of Greece's debt was revealed and the Eurozone started discussing bailout options, Hellenic money has been pouring into this country at an unprecedented rate. Some say €10bn (£7bn) has been taken out of Greece since then; others put the figure at €20bn (£14bn). Either way, a lot of cash left the country and a lot of it arrived in London, with Greeks fearful that Greece might revert to the drachma, devaluing savings, and/or that the government would seize any cash reserves. 'In some cases, we didn't really know where the money was coming from,' a private banker says of the sudden influx. 'We just had to accept it without checking, and then we worked it out afterwards.'

In 2010 and 2011, Greeks were the biggest property buyers after the Russians and Arabs. Back then, it was houses and apartments from Marylebone down to Mayfair. There is a sprinkling of Greeks in Eaton Square, but in general Belgravia is less popular - 'because there isn't much of a café culture there,' says Panos Koutsogiannakis, a property broker based in London who has become the go-to man for Greeks looking to invest in Britain. 'Right now, they're buying more commercial property and hotels,' he says over a double macchiato in the Beaumont Hotel. 'The good thing about Greek money, though, is that you know it's not dodgy.'

Not that you'll find many Greeks who want to discuss their own personal odyssey. For various reasons, the rich Greek community in London are a discreet bunch. 'With the new non-dom regulations, a lot of Greeks who I know are very cautious and do not want to highlight themselves,' emailed a Greek friend after I'd contacted her asking if we could talk. Under proposals announced by George Osborne last July, all those who have lived in Britain for more than 15 of the past 20 years will have their non-dom status taken away from them from next year. It means that those who have been living in the UK but avoiding paying any tax on overseas income will have to start coughing up. Troublesome times for those involved in international businesses like shipping, who may earn the bulk of their income outside Britain.

Twice before, however, when British prime ministers have debated clamping down on non-doms, the pressure from shipowners specifically has forced them to back down. When John Major was considering scrapping the non-dom status two decades ago, it was supposedly a gaggle of Greeks who visited Downing Street and talked him down. Similarly, when Gordon Brown floated the idea in the early 2000s, John Prescott discreetly pointed out how much the shipping community was worth to London in business terms and Brown conveniently forgot the matter.

A quiet announcement recently made by the Greek government is another reason for the secrecy. Last October, Tryfon Alexiadis, the Greek deputy finance minister, revealed that HM Revenue and Customs had recently handed over a list of 3,200 Greeks who have bought properties in Britain since 2010, including 372 people who had bought multimillion-pound properties in key London areas. According to Alexiadis, Greece would now pursue certain key individuals for tax evasion, and it was also aiming to introduce a new property tax of one per cent on any property bought abroad by its nationals.

Furthermore, while middle-class Athenians queue at soup kitchens, the wealthy Greek diaspora in London doesn't want to be seen cruising about Mayfair. It's a solidarity thing, explains one Greek banker. 'Wealthy Greeks aren't obviously flashy,' says Koutsogiannakis. 'They won't come to meetings dripping in diamonds and with Birkin bags. But they will say, "Can we have lunch tomorrow?" and then they'll fly me to Athens on their jet.' Has that actually happened, I ask him. 'Many times,' he insists.

In London, these days, there is a mix of Old Greece and New Greece. Old Greece includes Crown Prince Pavlos and his wife Marie-Chantal, who married in 1995 in St Sophia, the Greek Orthodox cathedral in Bayswater where many smart Greeks get hitched. It was a wedding that highlighted how significant the Greek royals remained, despite the loss of their kingdom. Almost all the British royals were present (the Duke of Edinburgh is the son of a Greek prince and was born on a dining-room table in Corfu), as well as kings and queens from countries including Spain, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden and Jordan. 'Never have I seen so many royals under one roof,' wrote the Spectator columnist Taki Theodoracopulos, who these days splits his time between Gstaad (a particular Greek favourite) and New York, but whose daughter Mandolyna, an interior designer, lives in London.

Pavlos's brother Nikolaos now lives in Athens with his wife Tatiana, a former PR for Diane von Furstenberg, whom he married in 2010. But in the Nineties, both brothers - dark, handsome, royal - were much sought after as eligible bachelors on the London party scene. 'Nikolaos was always the cheeky, more relaxed Prince Harry figure,' says someone who used to hang out with them at both the Greek restaurant Elysée and dinner parties. 'People were always giving them parties,' she adds.

Old Greece also includes the original shipping dynasties. In part thanks to geography, Greece has long been a swashbuckling maritime nation. Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos - known as the Golden Greeks - remain the two poster boys for the industry: they bought up decommissioned American naval vessels after the Second World War, recognising that oil transportation by tanker would be a boom industry. Nowadays, the wealth is spread about a bit more democratically, with around 900 Greek families in control of the largest fleet in the world.

The new Greek invasion Rich Greeks Greek Kings in London Marianna Goulandris Anthony Chandris Dimitri Chandis

Although Athina Onassis, Aristotle's granddaughter, now lives in São Paulo with her Brazilian showjumping husband Alvaro and his two children, various members of the Niarchos clan remain in London. Eugenie, one of Stavros's many jet-setting grandchildren, is a 29-year-old jewellery designer who can often be spotted looking for inspiration at the V&A and hangs out with a young international set that includes Princess Beatrice, the Dellals and Dasha Zhukova. Other old shipping names that knock about London include the Livanoses, the Embiricoses, the Mavroleons, the Kulukundises - but if you happen to find yourself sitting next to one who's single at dinner, sharpen up before Paris Hilton gets there first. She's dated both Eugenie's brother Stavros Niarchos III and was briefly engaged to shipping playboy Paris Latsis. Then there are the dashing Lemos brothers, Adonis and Filippos, the latter of whom has just got engaged to another Greek, Marianna Goulandris. 'They're the Greek It-couple,' says a friend. But Greek boys seem to like English-rose types too: Adonis Lemos is stepping out with designer Marissa Montgomery, Anthony Chandris is dating jeweller Theodora Warre and Dimitris Chandris is the boyfriend of Rocco Forte's daughter Lydia. One of the Goulandris family emails me about why some Greeks are so tight-lipped: 'They come from a culture where the government is so corrupt that they cannot bear to pay taxes. Thence comes a lot of paranoia and frankly ethically compromised positions.'

New Greece are a chattier, more upfront bunch. Take Evangelos Pistiolis, one of the new-generation shipping kings: a handsome, stubbled man, he runs a company called TOP Ships ('I like shipping the way Dalí liked painting,' he says of his love for the industry). He grew up in Greece but, like many, completed his education in Britain, where he studied shipping operations at the Southampton Institute of Higher Education. He has an office in Athens, although he splits his time between there, Monaco and London. 'I like London for its international feel, I like that you never meet the same people. It's dynamic. No matter what your business, everyone goes through London three to four times a year. And I like Cipriani's [C London],' he says.

There's also Andreas Panayiotou, worth around £500m, the self-made son of Greek Cypriots who ran a dry-cleaning shop in Mile End. A former boxer who made his money in property, he is a big character. He lives in north London, owns a Gulfstream and a 130-foot yacht, and likes cigars and Tom Ford suits. He is happy to chat over a coffee in the Dover Street Arts Club, where he talks about corrupt officials at home in Greece, the madness of Greek taxation laws and what often makes Greeks so successful. 'We work hard, we get on with it.' Has he come across any snobbery among the Greek community in London? 'Nah,' he shrugs. 'If you're Greek, you're pleased if another Greek does well.'

Daphne Vassiliades, a glamorous thirtysomething who came here to study at the LSE and never left, says that Greeks in London these days are a much more integrated group than certain other nationalities. And she should know - she's a former director at Debrett's. 'The first generation, who are maybe 50-plus - big shipping families - are one group. But there are many, many of the second generation - my generation - who have hardly ever lived in Greece and are here: the women mainly work in fashion, the men are high up in banking. They all look English, and they sound English.' Although there are constant shipping gala dinners, says Daphne, and Greek dinner parties where politics are discussed endlessly. 'It always comes up. But there have been so many crises and I'm, like, "I can't talk about it anymore!"'

Everyone is related to everyone, adds a shipbroker who considers himself Greek, but has a British passport because he was born in London to Greek parents. (A British passport is highly prized because it means you can get out of compulsory military service in Greece.) 'I have so many first cousins, second cousins, third cousins. And when it comes to cousins you're related to by marriage - forget it.'

The new Greek invasion Rich Greeks Greek Kings in London Marianna Goulandris Anthony Chandris Dimitri Chandis

When they hanker after octopus and fish flown in from the Mediterranean that morning, homesick clusters of Old and New Greece gather for lunch at Estiatorio Milos, a smart Greek restaurant in St James's. Or further north at Lemonia in Primrose Hill or at Elysée in Fitzrovia, London's oldest Greek restaurant, where the Duke of Edinburgh went in the Sixties. Small blond children called things like Alexis and Maria are often dispatched to the Knightsbridge School, which used to be the Hellenic College, founded by King Constantine II and his wife in 1980 so that their children, along with the offspring of other smart Greeks, had a proper grounding in the language as well as the country's history. The school closed in 2005, and the Knightsbridge opened the following year, backed by investors including Dimitri Goulandris and with an Old Etonian headmaster called Magoo Giles, who was once the Queen's equerry.

What Old and New Greece share is an unshakeable devotion to the motherland, despite its endless dramas. At Easter, they tend to all fly 'home', ditto throughout the summer. 'It's all about the summer holidays and sailing,' says Vassiliades. You might be a Greek shipping king who took his money out of the country years ago and has been based in London for decades, but you probably still have a house on a Greek island where your grandmother, or yaya, lived - ideally Spetses, one of the smartest islands - and so return several times a year for taverna lunches under olive trees, surrounded by your multiplying family like something out of The Godfather . 'Despite everything, Greece is still an amazing country,' says a shipping friend, who went back to Greece six times last year - twice over Easter and four times during the summer. 'There is a huge amount of pride.'

It echoes the words of King Constantine II, who returned to his home country in 2013 because he was homesick. 'Look at ancient Greek history,' he said in an interview last year. 'All Greeks who live in exile, they want to go back. It's in the blood.'

John N. Goulandris

1923 – 2011.

Goulandris, John N

John N. Goulandris was instrumental in establishing the N.J. Goulandris group, which for over half a century has epitomised high-quality vessels and operations. However, he will also be remembered as ahead of his time for his interest in engineering that, in the 1970s, almost put Greece on the map as an innovative car manufacturer.

A grandson of Ioannis P. Goulandris who acquired the family’s first steamship in 1910, John N. Goulandris and his two younger brothers in 1953 established N. J. Goulandris Ltd, named after their father Nicholas, in London. They also created Andriaki Shipping as their ship management arm in Piraeus.

The next two decades saw the company rise dramatically. N. J. Goulandris was among the first international shipowners to build ships in Japan, starting with the first-ever Goulandris tanker. Another tanker, the 1958-built Violanda, was the largest thus far built in Japan. The company’s 192,477-ton Nicholas J. Goulandris, built in 1968 by Hitachi Zosen, is considered the first supertanker to raise the Greek flag.

In Greece, the N. J. Goulandris family commissioned the giant statue of the Unknown Seafarer that is a feature of the town of Andros island and also financed the adjacent maritime museum. In 1969, it acquired Neorion Shipyards on Syros to boost the economy of the Cycladic islands. The vision was to transform the fishing boat repairer into a modern repair yard for ships up to panamax size. The family invested heavily in modernising the yard, creating hundreds of jobs.

Based in the UK, in the late 1960s Goulandris acquired the marine engine division of British motorcycle manufacturer Enfield. He established Enfield Marine to build aluminium boats. Before closing in 1973, the firm achieved fame for competitive powerboats.

Meanwhile Enfield Automotive produced the world’s first production battery car, the Enfield 8000, of which more than 100 were built before Goulandris switched production to Neorion. Another 120 E8000s were built in Syros. Inflexible tax laws have been cited to explain why they never sold in Greece. Production of electric cars and Goulandris’ own concept of a luxury 4 x 4 stopped in 1976 and Neorion was nationalised.

The shipping business, though, continued to excel. After retirement, Goulandris lived to see the establishment of N. J. Goulandris Maritime in Greece in 2008, reuniting the commercial aspects of the business with the operational and technical divisions.

Greek billionaire shipping magnate, Basil Goulandris died in 1994. His wife died in 2000. The couple owned a large billion-dollar worthy collection of art that was kept in their Alpine chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland. Bloomberg News reports that one of Goulandris’ heirs, Aspasia Zaimis, is seeking to recover parts of the Goulandris collection that were sold in 1985, which at one time contained works by Picasso, Monet, Degas and Cezanne.  Although the sale took place when both Mr. and Mrs. Goulandris were still alive, claimant has been quoted as saying “I believe with all my heart that the paintings were part of my inheritance.” Zaimis is a legatee under Elisa Goulandris’s will. Another beneficiary of the same will is the Elisa Goulandris Foundation, now under an investigation by the Swiss authorities.

The account of the allegations reads like fiction: a Greek heiress, masterworks sold to a Panamanian company, a cyphered will, an art historian/executor of the will suspect of falsifying titles of ownership, Swiss privacy laws, a death on a yacht, etc.

Claimant is represented by Ron Soffer of Soffer Avocats in Paris. One of the defendants is represented by Jean- Christophe Diserens of Etude Villa Olivier in Lausanne.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

goulandris yacht

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
