Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Review of Maxi 95

Basic specs..

The Maxi 95 is equipped with a finn keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The keel is made of iron. Many people prefer lead keel in favour of iron. The main argument is that lead is much heavier than iron and a lead keel can therefore be made smaller which again result in less wet surface, i.e. less drag. In fact iron is quite heavy, just 30% less heavy than lead, so the advantage of a lead keel is often overstated. As the surface of a finn type keel is just a fraction of the total wet surface, the difference between an iron keel and a lead keel can in reality be ignored for cruising yachts.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.50 - 1.60 meter (4.92 - 5.22 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Maxi 95 is typically equipped with an inboard Volvo Penta MD11C diesel engine at 23.0 hp (17 kW), which gives a max speed about 5.6 knots.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Maxi 95 is 1.93, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.8 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Maxi 95 is about 167 kg/cm, alternatively 936 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 167 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 936 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

What is Relative Speed Performance?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 27m 2 (290 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

Maxi 95 new engine

Has anyone replaced the engine in their Maxi 95? if so what did they replace the Volvo MD11c with. Andy

  • 15 Sep 2011

Hi Andy, Yep, I have replaced the horrid green thing with a 28hp Kubota (identical to Beta 28). Managed the changeover single handed in just 3 days, with which I was very pleased, as indeed I am with the outcome. The only modifications were, that I had to use two pieces of angle iron, suitably drilled with 8 holes, to fit over the existing flexible engine mounts and provide fixings for the engine feet - scrap metal so no cost. And, I found that I needed a slightly longer prop shaft. This can be sorted by inserting a bobbin behind the gearbox but I chose to have a new bi-metal shaft made for little more than the cost of a bobbin. And finally, the raw water inlet fitting needs to be a slightly larger diameter than for the Volvo - dead simple. If I can help, contact me and/or, if you are around the Hamble area at all I would be pleased to show you the boat & engine.

Can I see yr engine please Hi Have seen your post about fitting beta in maxi 95 and would love to come and have a look. My maxi is in France but had engine probs this year with the original Volvo and I am trying to decide on new engine and all parts from here - without being able to measure everything. Seeing a new beta installation would be fantastic. Am at Southampton boat show today and could visit otherwise will make return trip from Devon. Robin Barker

Beta 30 in Maxi 95 Hi Andy Would love to come and see your Maxi asap. Am, now back from Hamble, but thinking of buying Beta 30 at Boat Show prices ... Do you have photos? And even more important do you have info on lengths of prop shaft, prop, wiring loom - and what the existing engine bearers are made of (ie are they timber or metal, and could I tap threads into them ???? For direct contact pls my em is [email protected] Cheers Robin Barker

Thanks for replies gents. I'm coming down in favour of the Beta 25 which is just slightly more 'grunt' than the Volvo MD11C though lower torque. Rule of thumb figures suggest about 5HP per tonne of displacement for a cruiser so with the Maxi 95 at 4 tonnes that should be enough power. I wonder why 'Maxi' decided on a 28HP engine rather than something closer to the MD11C 24HP and whether he replaced the original 2 blade prop with a three blade when re-engining - something I'm thinking about - to make use of the additional power? Sorry guys, but if anyone wanted to view the boat it's up on the West of Scotland so quite a long trip. She's number 542 by the way so quite an old lady. Beta will make up special engine feet (I think about £270) to correspond to the original engine mounts so it's a (relatively easy) drop in though, if you're up to it (I'm not), as 'Maxi' suggests you can use angle iron or similar. The MD11C must have been just about below water level but managed not to draw back water using an airvent which fitted within the engine housing/table. I think I may have to breach that housing to fit a higher vent for the new engine. It will be nice to have an engine which doesn't spurt smoke, leak oil, get water into the gearbox and have working instruments but having saisd that, once running, the old engine did just keep on going. Cheers Andy Bell. 'Pelorus'

Chose a 28hp engine 'cos it was just £1400 fully marinised and identical to the Beta product, and NO NO NO, I did not fit a 3 blade prop - had to change the "hand" of the prop and the "pitch" - I still want #533 to sail as well as she has always done.

Not cheap, just very very good value. I had waited some 3 years for the right opportunity to come along, and it came.

  • 29 Sep 2011

Beta 30 ordered Hi Have just ordered Beta 30 following good investigation of all the options. It's more expensive that the 25, but the engine feet are the same width as the MD11C so am saving on special feet and also get better Alt included so it works out about the same. On balance am going with 3 blade prob. Will cut .25 knot off sailing speed maybe, but Maxis aren't good in tight turns in marinas and this will help. There are loads of different thoughts on the anti-siphon device, but am hopeful I can keep a new one under the table. Some say it has to be 300mm above waterline, others 400mm. Aiming to collect in Feb and fit myself with mechanic friend. Would eb good to compare notes on different options / measurements etc - my problem is the boat's in France, I'm in Devon and I want to buy everything here but I forgot to get detailed measurements for: Engine bearers - width and length - and are they wood or metal (ie can I drill and tap into them?) Wiring loom - how long do I need? New prop shaft - old one will be too short, what do I need (I plan to get 1.8m and cut down). Recommended prop is 15x13 Cheers all Robin

Thanks but I have looked at the Yanmar 3YM30E and the Vetus M3.29 and they both look a bit tight, esp the Yanmar. I dont think I want to risk those which seems to leave me with the diminutive Beta 25 and 30 which posters above have installed and they both, from what is said above, seem to fit. Apparently the feet on the Beta 30 dont need any adjustment to fit in the moldings for the md11c feet.. I hope I have got this right. Was a bit confused by identity of Andy Bell vs Tranona and who had done what! Thanks for the help all and any further comments welcome. Helen.

SaltIre said: Have a good look at the Vetus and work out which bits you would need access to regularly. I had a Sadler 25 with an 11HP 2 cylinder Vetus crammed in and the dipstick, impeller and other bits to which I might need access were on the stbd side. The previous owner had had lots of access holes cut out of a longitudinal bulkhead to get access from a pilot berth, but even then it was pretty difficult to get to the engine. There's a post here: Vetus Engines - are they any good??? with some pics of the engine and from the manual. I realise you are considering a 3 cylinder Vetus but the design might be similar. Edit: Here's the pic of the stbd side from the manual, copied from that post, and just about everything you need access to (fuel/water filter, oil filter, fuel lift pump, impellor etc) were pretty inaccessible. Speak to Beta. They’re incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. If nothing else, they can talk you through the key dimensions and options for custom mounts/brackets (which they can fabricate themselves to customers’ spec)

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.

Hunt Yachts Harrier 26-2016-OSPREY Wilmington-North Carolina-United StatesOSPREY 3234641

DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!
