Heaven on earth

Celebrating 128 years in 2019, the Sydney Flying Squadron has one of the richest histories in the sailing world. northsider met with Club Commodore Billy Loader and Club Historian and sailing legend John ‘Steamer’ Stanley to discover more about this local icon…

First published in northsider magazine Summer 2018/2019 issue.

Sydney Flying Squadron, Kirribilli, Sydney Harbour, skiff racing

It’s Saturday afternoon and Sydney Harbour is sparkling. In a flurry of sea spray, the gleaming 18ft hull of Yendys, a replica of a historic skiff, cuts through the waves.

The crew of eight moves together, their expertise allowing the boat to reach breathtaking speeds of up to 20 knots (37kmph), as Port Jackson’s other famous sails at the Opera House flash past.

“Out on the harbour with your mates, having a laugh… it’s the ride of your life!” smiles Billy Loader.

A fleet of 11 such skiffs belongs to the Sydney Flying Squadron and races on the harbour every Saturday in summer. Affectionately known as ‘the squaddy’, the club was founded by department store entrepreneur Mark Foy in 1891. Situated at the end of Careening Cove in Kirribilli, it’s the oldest open boat sailing club in Sydney.

Foy’s goal was to make the sport accessible to everyone, regardless of background, bank balance or ability.

“Foy just loved boats,” John ‘Steamer’ Stanley says. “He had one of the first power boats in Sydney and we believe he built and sailed one of the first racing catamarans in the world. He wanted the public to enjoy it too.”

“Sailing is seen as elitist, but anyone can come here – it’s an important part of the culture of the club that it’s open to everyone”

Sydney Flying Squadron, Kirribilli, Foys, William Loader, Billy Loader, Steamer, John Stanley, sailing, skiff club

Not everyone agreed with Foy’s egalitarian approach. The sailing establishment banned the squaddy’s boats from the 1892 National Regatta, claiming their coloured sails encouraged gambling and spoilt the look of the harbour’s sailing scene.

Instead of changing tack with the design, which he’d created so spectators on shore could identify the boats, Foy started his own regatta. The squaddy’s regatta drew the biggest crowd the harbour had ever seen for a sailing event. After that, families would pack a picnic and head to watch the boats every weekend, with up to 30,000 people lining the harbour. A further 7,000 would take to the waves on spectator ferries.

The atmosphere even caused one to capsize when passengers rushed to watch an exhilarating race moment.

flying squadron yacht club kirribilli

Foy’s ‘built from an idea and volunteers’ ethos continues today, with the club welcoming newcomers with open arms.

“Sailing is seen as elitist, but anyone can come here,” says Billy. “It’s an important part of the culture of the club that it’s open to everyone.”

“I was born with dislocated hips,” Steamer adds. “I couldn’t play footie but I could sail.

If a kid off the street can’t get the opportunity to sail then the sport’s lost the plot.

“When I first went out on one of the skiffs, we hit a ferry wash and put the spinnaker up, and I just thought, ‘Wow! How good is this?’”

Billy and Steamer speak with pride about the club’s great members, including Billy Barnett – “a legend, he won bloody everything” – and late Clean Up Australia pioneer Ian Kiernan, who referred to the squaddy as “heaven on earth”.

And the camaraderie extends to the shore.

“In the winter, it was like a men’s shed, everyone boat building together,” Billy says.

It’s the passion and dedication to these iconic boats that’s preserved this special part of Sydney Harbour’s sailing history. It’s also seen some members need to do some urgent renovations.

“When Reg Barrington built Tangalooma in his lounge room, he had to remove the wall to get the boat out,” Steamer explains.

flying squadron yacht club kirribilli

Today, there’s no need to pack a picnic. The squaddy clubhouse now has an excellent waterfront bar, restaurant and cafe, run by Bird & Bear’s Adam and Emma Marshall. A spectator ferry still takes to the waves every Saturday too. The action’s just as thrilling as it was all those years ago – and the ferry is a lot more OH&S compliant!

“This is traditional, grass-roots sailing,” Billy says. “It’s back to basics and celebrates a proud heritage on Sydney Harbour. It’s also a lot of fun.

“Go on the ferry, see the boats up close and then we’ll take you out, get that spinnaker up and fly down the harbour,” he continues, a glint in his eye. “There’s no feeling like it.”

Mark Foy would be proud.

Who was Mark Foy?

Born in 1865, Mark Foy was an entrepreneur. He opened Mark Foy’s department store on Oxford Street in Sydney in 1885 and the Hydro Majestic Hotel in the Blue Mountains in 1904. Married twice, he had four children and died in 1950 aged 85 .

Sydney Flying Squadron

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Relaxing casual spot, nice harbour and park green views and enjoyable atmosphere. Walked in for lunch at 12:15pm, outside balcony space was almost completely full by 12:30pm on a Friday. Had shared plates of oysters, calamari and a healthy salmon grazing plate. Great flavours and... delicious all round. Nice drinks. Courteous service, although order at the bar. Such a beautiful place to be in Sydney. More

It's a great spot, great views and has been well refurbished but it doesn't add up. The prices are 30% over the top for what is very average food. The place is very noisy inside due to wooden floors and it attracts the theatre going... crowd not the locals. Missed opportunity. More

We eat here before we go to The Ensemble Theatre. Being next door, it is the perfect venue. The views are stunning and the best time is early evening. The restaurant has had a recent revamp and the food is above club food. The staff... are courteous and attentive. The pricing is restaurant prices. The wine list is average with the usual type of brands. But, we always enjoy our meal and the experience More

Don’t bother coming! $38 for 5 pieces of hard, cold ravioli. $18 glass of wine. They are really taking advantage of their customers. This place used to be packed - almost empty this Saturday afternoon… I can see why

My wife and I went there for the Valentine’s special 5 course delicious dinner. The new chef is EXCELLENT. We had the very best service from Max, our wonderful waiter. We sat on the balcony watching an ocean liner and ferries come and go. Highly... recommended! More

Admittedly it was the 3rd night they had opened after their renovations, however, the renovations of their menu leave much to be desired. Do not have the seafood share plate, it was a disaster. Only enough food for one person - 1 small piece of... fish, 2 grilled prawns (overdone and dry), octopus so chewy it was inedible, salt & pepper calamari had no flavour but at least we could eat it. This came with a small amount of salad and no chips. All for the reasonable price of $55.00. $6.00 extra for chips that sat on the counter waiting for everyone else's meals to come out for at least 10 minutes - warm chips instead of hot! We have been going to the club for years and although the service left a little to be desired at least we received a good meal. Now they have good service and terrible meals. If you think this is the way to make money you are very much mistaken. More

We've been here many times before and always enjoyed the whole experience. Till now! We'd been to an enjoyable play and were looking forward finishing our night here. We ordered an entree to share so as not to spoil our appetites and our meal. We... waited and waited and waited some more! No one came near us for nearly an hour, and then only because we called the waiter over. He explained that they had a new chef and something about the kitchen (can't remember what- don't care anyway). Not sure why that should have been our problem. He also said, "if it makes you feel any better that others were waiting too", to which I replied that it in no way made me feel better! All they had to do was offer us maybe some sour dough and olives or something and it would have made us feel better but no. After an hour and 10 we finally got our entree which we pounced on as we were all ravenous by this stage. Our main meal arrived an hour and 40 waiting. I cut about half a cup of fat off my meal and my partners steak was rare instead of medium as he'd requested but he couldn't be bothered sending it back. We thought, what the heck let's have dessert only to be told that the only desserts on the menu were an icecream trio or a cheese platter! Who wants a cheese platter for dessert- not us! As we were leaving the waiter said he hoped we'd enjoyed our meal. My husband politely said some of us had but it'd taken far too long. At the end of the counter the kitchen staff just laughed. Won't be going back anytime soon! There are too many good restaurants nearby to bother with this place again. More

Like others I have been going to this club for over 20 years. The new renovations have created a big noisy barn. Having high bar tables on the deck destroys the view for those inside as to does the bar rail along the western windows.... The service was apalling. Lots of staff but not trained and they did not care. The food was very poor quality. This used to be a lovely comfortable place with reasonable food but not only has the ambiance been destroyed but also the food. We will not return. More

The place has been renovated but the food needs some improvement. The menu is very basic and boring. Please bring back the old chef, I missed my Massaman Curry!

I've been to the Flying Squadron restaurant several times, it's consistently good. Good service, suprisingly good value for the food given the smack bang water views. Can be an older crowd and yes it is a little bit like an rsl on the water but... who cares (?) with views and food like this. More

I had booked online for table of 8 at 7 pm FRI 20 June. Had a call 17 JUN at 1234 to say "could we arrive earlier, last order in restaurant was to be 7.30 pm and club closing at 8pm?" We have friends from... all over Sydney joining us this FRI and cannot arrive earlier due FRI night traffic from one side of SYD to another. Worst thing was no explanation or apology by the girl that called me. Totally unsatisfactory. More

Lovely place, great service, beautiful view, but I had the worst risotto I've actually ever had. It was chewy (and not in a perfect al dente way) and grainy, and flavourless. Maybe stick to the burgers and fries if you're going to go there.

I just went to enquire about lunch here and got such a rude response by a french waiter that it has put me off going here in the future. Im a Kirribilli resident. This is dissapointing. I will not recomend this restaurant to others in... my area after this experience. More

We were planning a casual cocktail wedding reception and were lucky enough to secure a booking at the Flying Squadron. It was the perfect location to walk to from the wedding ceremony. Both Anthony and Nick (managers) couldn't have been more helpful. They were dealing... with the bride and groom in Canberra and us in Sydney. Everything we asked for was done and the food was excellent. Maybe we should have ordered more, but everyone seemed very happy. The furniture was arranged just as we wanted it and any changes we wanted as the night wore on,were attended to straight away. The whole atmosphere was perfect and everyone was extremely happy with the night. Well done to all the staff and thank you for making a perfect night for us! More

We were regular patrons at the club before the renovations and then were bitterly disappointed when we visited the club after its transformation. However, we decided to give it another go and were pleasantly surprised at how the standards had risen and the service was... so much better. We would definitely recommend giving it a go, especially if you want to sup before attending the Ensemble next door. Just watch out for the lack of parking, otherwise be pleasantly surprised at the great view and stunning location this club has to offer. More

Moscow Nightlife • A Complete Guide

Moscow is the capital of Russia and is one of the most populated cities in the country. Apart from traditional architecture, the city has been modernized to keep up with time. The nightlife of Moscow is exceptionally vibrant. You can find several casinos, nightclubs, and bars in the city. If you were planning a trip to Moscow and were confused about what during the night, don’t worry! Here are some of the best night-time experiences that you must try in Moscow!

When can you experience the nightlife in Moscow?

Although the bars and nightclubs are open daily, it is most vibrant on Saturdays and Fridays. Moscow residents like to work hard, and only on these days, they let their guard down. You can party for 12 hours straight on these days. There is almost no crowd on the other days of the week. Usually, the nightlife of Moscow begins at 11 am. You can catch your dinner early to prepare for all the partying. Most of the parties in clubs go on till 3 am. But the fun doesn’t end there. You can look for after-party clubs after that.

Best bars in Moscow

Moscow bars are extremely lively. From beautiful women to authentic drinks – the bars in Moscow have a lot to offer. In recent times, several establishments have popped up. If you are a tourist, it can be difficult for you to pick out the right one. To clear your confusion, you can refer to the below-mentioned list of bars for your night-out in this city:

This joint is not extremely glamorous and yet, is one of the most popular bars in Moscow. Kamchatka is a beer bar that has a vintage Soviet feel to it. The décor of this bar makes it look like a cafeteria and adds a dash of old-world charm to it. It is one of the most affordable bars in Moscow. Most locals tend to hang out here. The menu is simple yet hearty. If you want to avoid noisy places and enjoy a drink in peace, this is where you need to be in Moscow.

  • I Like Wine

The bar is appropriately named, as you can get an extensive collection of wine at this joint. Wines are collected from all parts of the world and delivered to the customers at this bar. You can even get a couple of cocktails on the menu. But mostly wine lovers visit this pub. This wine bar also has a good food menu. The prices are extremely pocket-friendly, and you can eat on a budget at this place.

  • Solyanka Bar

It is one of the indie bars in Moscow. The party atmosphere of this bar is infectious. Located in an old mansion, it serves fusion cuisine during the daytime. But at night, it becomes the hippest joint in town. The drinks are expensive but worth it. The DJs play the latest hits to keep up the spirits of the partygoers. The place lives up to its indie bar reputation as the décor is extremely rustic. The brick walls, exposed bulbs, and second-hand furniture make it a go-to spot for all the hipsters in Moscow.

You can always find students in Strelka as it is one of the popular bars in the city. The view from this bar is breathtaking as it overlooks the Moscow River. The 70s inspire the décor. It is aesthetic and yet comfortable. Moreover, the cocktail menu at this bar is fantastic. The concoctions are prepared by using local ingredients. Perhaps this is the reason why bar hoppers prefer this bar over others. If you are lucky, you will be able to witness one of the weekly concerts and events held here.

If you want to experience something vintage, this is the place you should visit. Terma Bar is one of the oldest bars in the city. You can find over 150 alcoholic beverages at this bar. The bartenders are incredibly skilled and put up a show with fire while they prepare your drinks. There is an adventurous food menu at the club which serves Uzbek cuisine. Moreover, the bar is open 24/7, so you can drop by at any time.

Do you hate bars where the music is so loud that you cannot talk to anyone else? If you do, you can visit ‘Noor.’ This electro bar is located on Tverskaya street. It is incredibly cozy, and the music’s volume levels are kept in check to promote conversations. On weekends, you will be able to attend live music events of national and international artists. The décor of this club is chic and is an ideal place to grab a couple of drinks with family and friends.

  • City Space Bar and Lounge

The City Space Bar and Club provides a stunning view of Moscow. This bar is located on the 34 th floor of a hotel. It is highly exclusive, and only those who can afford to spend big bucks visit this bar. The drinks and food are not cheap at City Space Bar and Lounge. However, it is worth it!

  • Mendeleev Bar
