2023 International Yacht and Aviation Awards shortlist announced

International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2023 -shortlisted logo

The anticipation is building as the 2023 International Yacht and Aviation Awards (IYAA), announce their shortlisted entries and prepare to open online voting for the winners in each category. The IYAA recognizes the best designs in categories that encompass all aspects of yacht and aviation designs and concepts. As a company that was shortlisted in 2021 and went on to win the top spot in the category for “ Private Aviation: Private Jet Design – Concept” , Camber Aviation is excited to participate again this year, especially given the high calibre of the other entries.

Now in its 13 th year, the International Yacht & Aviation Awards are established as a key event in the super yacht and private jet design calendar. However, what sets these awards apart is their unwavering focus on design. While other events may share similarities, none are specifically dedicated to recognizing the crucial design aspects of the yacht and aviation industries.

Hosted by Design et al – a leading interior design magazine, and Luxe et al, a prominent magazine in yacht and aviation design, the awards are a crucial platform for designers. This event not only provides them with the opportunity to showcase their work and receive recognition for their commitment to design innovation but also to establish connections with other professionals in the industry. This in turn inspires others to explore new possibilities and technologies that drive the entire industry forward.

As the 2023 edition of the IYAA approaches, excitement within the industry is palpable. The awards showcase ground-breaking concepts and inspire designers to push the boundaries of what is possible in this ever-evolving industry.  As such, Camber Aviation Management and leading designer Alexander Craker have collaborated on their submission this year: the innovative “LongTail” design for consideration in the “Private Jet Design – Concept” category.

The LongTail design concept, aims to create an iconic design for a pre-owned Boeing Business Jet – a Max 7, by combining the best aspects of the Riva Aquarama and the Rolls Royce Boat Tail. Unlike the more conventional types of private jet interiors that seek to disguise the cabin shape and make a passenger forget they are travelling, the LongTail concept embraces the rarefied experience of flying privately, making it an integral part of the design. The layout is about creating a luxurious, spacious, and comfortable environment that is designed to make the journey as enjoyable as the destination.

Longtail Cabin Interior Design concept for Boeing Business Jet Max 7

The LongTail design relies heavily on the use of natural materials including bespoke leathers, hardwoods, and polished metals to create a clean, minimalist design that feels “ship-shape,” evoking the feelings of freedom and beckoning adventure that one experiences while cruising on a luxury motorboat or in a one-of-a-kind cabriolet. The cabin is arranged to maximize natural light and provides a sense of fluidity and movement, much like the open sea. The main attraction of the cabin is a state-of-the-art bar, exquisitely crafted in silver and gold, intended to be the central point of social interaction during the flight. It emerges from the rear of the day bed, forming a distinctive private bar area that includes stylish bar stools. To maximize space, the bar can be stored away discreetly and effortlessly, lifted and lowered by electric drives in a silent, elegant manner. While the bar is stowed, a 4K monitor can be raised in its place.

Passenger comfort is also a top priority in the design, with features such as ergonomic seating, soundproofing, and advanced climate control systems being incorporated throughout the cabin. Additionally, the minimalist layout and clean lines make the design much lighter than a more traditional layout, while the lightweight cabin ensures an increased range and improved performance over conventional cabin designs.

The LongTail represents Alexander Craker’s and Camber’s innovative spirit and involved a multi-stage design process that included research, brainstorming, sketching, and refining. In addition to Camber Aviation Management and Alexander Craker’s Longtail design, there are several other exciting entries at the Awards in categories including Concept Yachts, Yacht Interior Design, Private Aviation, Commercial Aviation, and Product Design.

One of the entries in the Motor Yacht Over 60 Metres category is MY “Project X” by Massari Design in collaboration with Golden Yachts Ltd . The yacht boasts exceptional external lines complemented by an equally impressive interior.

Conrad Shipyard’s superyacht project “C144 Ace”, designed in collaboration with m2atelier, is shortlisted for the Interior Design Award (Over 40 Metres) category. The yacht’s design concept aims to challenge traditional rigidity and codes of typical yachts by applying contemporary living concepts to the boat space.

In Private Aviation, Flexjet has partnered with Bentley Motors UK to create a luxurious private jet called Project Bacalar . The Gulfstream G650ER jet has been customized to showcase the exquisite design and style that Bentley is known for, and Flexjet is shortlisted for the Interior Design/VIP Completions Award category.

At the cutting edge of design concepts, Van Geest Design and Rob Doyle Design have unveiled a revolutionary yacht design concept called Domus. The sailing trimaran offers an interior volume equivalent to a 60-meter motor yacht, and the designers have incorporated the concept of a single-story house built around an atrium to create an airy, open atmosphere on board. The design is competing in the Concept Under 40 Metres category.

And in Commercial Aviation, Adient Aerospace’s Altitude project aimed to improve the narrow-body business class seating experience due to the increasing use of smaller planes for long-haul flights, and as a result, it has been nominated for the Cabin Design Award in the International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023.

And the listed entries are just a small sample of some of the original approaches pioneered by the nominees shortlisted in their categories. This is particularly exciting for enthusiasts as one of the unique aspects of the IYAA is the opportunity for anyone with an interest in design or aviation or yachting to participate in the voting process.  Once the voting opens on May 10 th , all website visitors will have the opportunity to see detailed descriptions and images of the nominated designs and vote on their favourites in each category, in contrast to many competitions where   the winners are selected by a small group of industry experts. By opening the voting up in this manner, the International Yacht and Aviation Awards reach a much wider audience to ensure that the winning designs stand on their own merit, and possess a global aesthetic appeal that transcends industry and reputation.

In addition, the open voting allows readers and followers of design et al to be among the first to discover ground-breaking designs and innovations that may not otherwise be readily available to the general public. And by engaging enthusiasts in the selection process, the IYAA fosters a sense of community and shared excitement about the future of yacht and aviation design.

By incorporating creative methods of engaging their audience, the IYAA’s influence extends beyond the design community, impacting the broader yacht and aviation industries as well. By recognizing and promoting creative design concepts, the awards have a ripple effect on the development of new technologies and materials that ultimately benefit the entire industry. This progress creates a more diverse and vibrant market for luxury transportation, offering consumers a wider array of choices and spurring further growth in the sector.

Furthermore, the IYAA serves as an educational platform for the design community, allowing industry professionals to learn from the successes and innovations of their peers. Through the sharing of ideas, concepts, and technologies, the awards contribute to a collective advancement in design that benefits the entire industry whilst inspiring young designers to take their first steps in the industry. By fostering an environment of collaboration and learning, the IYAA ensures that designers continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in yacht and aviation design.

This long-standing tradition of fostering growth and development within the industry, makes the International Yacht and Aviation Awards stand out in a crowded industry, inspiring designers to explore new possibilities and challenge the boundaries of design. With each passing year, the IYAA continues to raise the bar for what is possible in yacht and aviation design, setting new benchmarks for excellence and innovation.

With only a couple of weeks until voting opens, the shortlisted nominees will be eagerly waiting to see how their designs are received across a wide audience.  Having the opportunity to submit visionary concepts in an event that celebrates exceptional talent and imagination is the very essence innovation that defines the superyacht and private jet industries.  As such, the awards ceremony in Venice will undoubtedly be a memorable event, bringing together designers, professionals, potential clients and even enthusiasts to recognize the accomplishments of the yacht and aviation design community.

For entrants like Camber Aviation Management and Alexander Craker, submitting their “Longtail” design concept to the awards represents not only an opportunity to showcase their innovative approach to private jet interiors but also to gain valuable feedback and insight from industry professionals and enthusiasts alike, as well as being motivated and inspired by competing designs. In addition, the experience of participating in the IYAA can lead to new opportunities and collaborations, helping to shape the future of yacht and aviation design.

By honouring the best in design, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainability, the awards play a crucial role in shaping the future of yacht and aviation design for years to come. The 2023 edition of the IYAA is sure to be another exciting and inspiring event, showcasing the incredible talent and passion that exists within the design community.

international yacht and aviation awards

Navalt has been shortlisted for The International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2023. The award, now in its 13th year of successful running is one of the most prestigious and most significant achievements in the yacht and aviation industry. Hosted by the interior design magazine Design et al and the leading yacht and aviation magazine Luxe et al, the award aims to recognize the true creativity behind distinctive and aesthetic designs that stand out in the yacht and aviation industries.

Navalt’s Viridian is a 120-meter all-electric luxury catamaran superyacht and our first entry into the International Yacht and Aviation Awards. An enchanting nod to nature’s unparallel beauty, the Yacht’s design is inspired by the shape of a peacock feather taking its root from India’s national bird. The Viridian superyacht proudly heralds a flawless fusion of elegance, luxury, and style. Still, it is definite to marvel as it originates from the cultural and traditional roots of India as a nation.

The name Viridian means bluish-green and evokes the color of the peacock feather, doing justice to the design inspiration. From the first step on board, the attention to detail is palpable. The luxurious interiors and modern amenities are carefully designed to cater to discerning guests. The yacht is a perfect fusion of different colors, traditions, and cultures, binding them together in an elegant and harmonious manner. From the front view, Viridian is the quintessential superyacht, with its majestic size and grandeur. However, its eco-friendly technology and peacock feather design sets it apart from any other luxury yacht in the world. It is truly the ultimate example of luxury, innovation, and sustainability. One can experience the thrill of cruising through the water silently, with only the sounds of the waves and the gentle breeze to accompany you. The design integrates into the wider environment as the Viridian lets you relax on the luxurious deck and take in the breathtaking views around you.

Perspectives / Jet Aviation Design Studio Shortlisted in Yacht & Aviation Awards 2022

Jet Aviation Design Studio Shortlisted in Yacht & Aviation Awards 2022

April 8, 2022

Europe, Basel, Completions

Jet Aviation has been shortlisted in the Private Jet Concept category of the Design et Al Yacht & Aviation Awards 2022 with a brand-new design. The concept is inspired by a desire to bring a contemporary geometric aesthetic into a luxury and liveable space. It draws on current customer trends and integrates them into a creative, modern design which speaks to the passengers of today and tomorrow.

The modern, open plan layout is an exploration of how a VVIP aircraft cabin can function as a true home in the sky. An interesting dichotomy between art and architecture runs throughout the cabin, as sleek, straight and sharp lines are softened by tactile furnishings which add an element of contemporary elegance and comfort to the striking design. The living space features dining and relaxation areas, as well as an open galley – bringing beautiful form to a previously functional space. Throughout, screens have been integrated in a way that allows them to be visible or hidden inside cabinetry, making use of modern innovative technologies from the residential space to maximize the cabin design.

“We are considering how a guest might move through the space,” explains Grischa Schmidt, Senior Director Design. “We explore how environmental considerations such as sound, lighting and layout can affect this, and how to build on what is already accomplished and known to push the boundaries of what is possible in design and material to create the ultimate cabin experience.”

Color and material play a huge part in this experience. A light, modern palette is offset by pops of vibrant blue, which gradually grows in intensity as the guest moves through the space. The a geometric, pixelated aesthetic is repeated as a motif across different zones and materials to bring a consistent and cohesive design language to the entire cabin, with focal motifs that are repeated across different spaces to draw the concept together. At the same time, the design develops and evolves in different rooms, with complementary explorations of shape, tone and materials bringing a new visual element to each room experience.

“We explore how environmental considerations such as sound, lighting and layout can affect how a guest uses the space, and how to build on what is already accomplished and known to push the boundaries of what is possible in design and material to create the ultimate cabin experience.”

“This balance between consistency and variation is important,” says Jean-Francois Maugan, Senior Interior Designer. “It ensures that the cabin feels comfortable, yet still surprising, and coherent while being extremely creative.”

The design features a number of statement pieces which allow us to showcase specialist artisan techniques both within and outside of our own organization. Specialist artistic finishes are used across the cabinets, intricate cuttings are required for the stone dining table, and a unique flexible wood is used on the window paneling. Additionally the detailed carpet designs require a variety of techniques, such as loop pile and cut pile, allowing a range of textures to be used, as well as creating patterns through these techniques.

The team also considered how more sustainable elements could be integrated into VVIP cabin design. An experimentation with material and form allows these pieces and practices to permeate the design, such as the table marble marquetry which could potentially make use of stone offcuts; natural fibers used throughout the cabin; Nuo flexible wood which enables an easier way to integrate wood, and the use of water-based paint to bring in contrast but to also reduce the use of wood; and innovative textiles such as a non-textile flooring produced from recycled materials, and largely manufactured with fossil fuel free techniques.

The use of a wood material as a main element is also minimized in the project to allow for more sustainable alternatives. From a design perspective this helps reinforce the modern aesthetic that is seen throughout the concept, and creates more of a focus on other materials and textures, such as the artistic finishes, paints and soft fabrics.

“We are delighted to see the concept shortlisted for the Awards,” continues Schmidt. “The International Yacht and Aviation awards are an important event for the industry as they allows design teams to showcase their work to an audience and judging panel of their peers. It’s an opportunity to knowledge share and inspire one another to continually push the boundaries of what we believe to be possible to create ever more incredible experiences for our customers.”

Grand Laureates Announced At Aviation Week Network’s 66th Annual Laureate Awards

Award Honors Outstanding Achievements in Aviation, Aerospace & Defense

WASHINGTON, March 14, 2024 –   Aviation Week Network has announced the Grand Laureate winners for the 66th Annual Laureate Awards (#AWLAUR), honoring extraordinary achievements in the global aerospace arena. They were selected from a total of 26 winners of the  2024 Laureate Awards and were announced last evening at an awards gala at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, where all of the winners were honored. A Grand Laureate was named in each of the five award categories: Commercial Aviation, Defense, Space, Business Aviation, and MRO.

In addition, Aviation Week Network bestowed the Philip J. Klass Award for Lifetime Achievement to two individuals. Four cadets and midshipmen from U.S. military academies were also recognized as  Tomorrow’s Leaders , honoring young men and women who have chosen career paths in the armed forces.

“With 26 Laureate winners making significant contributions throughout the world, selecting the five Grand Laureates was no easy task for the judges.  The impact made by the Grand Laureates, from hydrogen electric powered aircraft to collecting and delivering pristine samples from an asteroid, demonstrates the very best of the best,” said Aviation Week Editorial Director Joe Anselmo.  “We are thrilled to celebrate these outstanding organizations and individuals.”

In addition to the Laureate Awards,   Aviation Week Network recognized the “20 Twenties” in partnership with  Accenture . This program recognizes the accomplishments and drive of 20 science, technology, engineering and mathematics students in their 20s and currently enrolled in a master's degree or bachelor's degree program.

The Grand Laureate Winners are:

COMMERCIAL AVIATION

Universal Hydrogen Universal Hydrogen’s De Havilland Canada Dash 8-300 propulsion testbed became the largest hydrogen-electric-powered aircraft yet to fly in March 2023, taking off with one of its two turboprop engines replaced with a 1 megawatt-class fuel-cell powertrain in a key milestone for the startup’s efforts to introduce zero-emission hydrogen propulsion beginning with regional aviation.

Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider  The U.S. Air Force's B-21 Raider bomber flew for the first time on Nov. 10, 2023 – eight years after contract award and less than a year after its public rollout at Northrop Grumman's Plant 42 facility in Palmdale, California. The milestone opens the door for the company to begin low-rate initial production of the first new U.S. bomber in three decades.

NASA/Lockheed Martin Osiris-Rex NASA’s $1 billion Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer (Osiris-Rex) fulfilled its primarily mission, collecting and delivering pristine samples from the primordial asteroid Bennu. Lockheed developed sample collection hardware which acted as a “reverse vacuum,” blowing compressed nitrogen gas to stir up dust and dirt from the asteroid and collect it in a canister for return to Earth in September 2023.

BUSINESS AVIATION

GAMA Electric Propulsion and Innovation Committee (EPIC) Established in 2015 by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), EPIC has successfully brought industry together to provide coordinated input to aviation regulators and standards developers on issues raised by new technologies including electric aircraft propulsion and simplified vehicle operation. In August 2023, GAMA submitted a robust industry-wide response to the FAA’s proposed operating rules for the electric vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicles.

Delta TechOps The Delta Engine Maintenance team reimagined engine operations coming out of COVID-19 when the airline MRO faced significant increases in engine and part repair turnaround times and the addition of three engine variants. The result: the APEX program’s predictive and simulation capabilities have resulted in predictive part-level material scrapping, optimized engine production control, substantial improvements in material availability and eight-digit cost savings.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Clay Lacy Clay Lacy, often called Mr. Learjet, was instrumental in launching the business jet era. Clay began flying at age 12 on his grandmother’s farm and joined United Airlines in 1952 at age 19. In 1964, he flew the first Learjet into Van Nuys Airport as a demonstrator for Pacific Learjet. And in 1969, he founded Clay Lacy Aviation as the first jet charter and executive jet management company on the West Coast. He has flown more than 300 aircraft types and logged more than 55,000 flight hours. He also helped pioneer the Astrovision camera system used to film more than 3,000 films and photo jobs for airlines and military projects including the original Top Gun.

Daniel S. Goldin

Dan Goldin is known as the longest-serving administrator of NASA, but his contributions to space go far beyond that. Launching his career in 1962 as a propulsion engineer at NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, Goldin went on to a 25-year career leading cutting-edge national security space projects at TRW (now Northrop Grumman). Appointed NASA administrator in 1992, Goldin re-energized the agency with his “faster, better, cheaper” mantra, oversaw the repair of the Hubble Space Telescope, the landing of U.S. rovers on Mars, the redesign and construction of the International Space Station and forged an international partnership with Russia in the ashes of the Cold War. He also guided the initial design of the James Webb Space Telescope, rejecting early concepts as woefully insufficient.

PATHFINDER AWARD

Luis Carlos Affonso

Luis Carlos Affonso is the mastermind behind Embraer’s success in commercial and business aviation. He joined the company more than 40 years ago, in January 1983, as an aeronautical engineer. Since then, he has led the launch and development of multiple all-new commercial and business aviation aircraft, including the ERJ-145, first generation Embraer 170/190 family and the E-Jet E2 family. He also led Embraer’s diversification into executive jets. Later, as head of strategy, Affonso was behind the creation of EmbraerX, a unit dedicated to disruptive technology, and advanced air mobility spin-off Eve.
