Crystal Clear Day on Androscoggin Lake in Wayne, Maine

The Androscoggin Yacht Club on Androscoggin Lake is located just off of Route 133 in Wayne, Maine. Formed in 1909, the club is one of the oldest in the United States and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Though the club was incorporated for the “promotion of the yachting and boating on the waters of Lakes Androscoggin and Pocasset, protection and preservation of the fishes and game on the waters thereof and care and improvement of the shores of said lakes,” you don’t need to own a boat to join . They also offer swimming and sailing lessons, and membership includes use of the club facilities. Many social events provide both sailors and non-sailors with opportunities for fun and companionship. The club history includes the following: “The original dues for the Club had been $2.00 , but they were soon raised to $4.00 and at one point $9.00. In 1921, it was decided to admit women to membership and the dues were set at $6.00 for men and $3.00 for women. The addition of the women added the names of the wives to members as well as of other women to the list of the Club, and a Social Committee was elected to have charge of dances, suppers, and social activities. Around 1919 the AY Needle Club was first noticed in the club records. “Tuesdays were considered ‘Needle Club’ day at the Club. Members gathered on the club’s porch with their sewing bags. This continued throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The Yacht Club ‘Bean Suppers’ were often planned during the Needle Club days.” Androscoggin Lake’s exceptional beauty, north-south orientation and prevailing westerly breezes make it a natural for those who enjoy the best of sailing. For the anglers , the principal fisheries are smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch and chain pickerel. Plentiful fishing structure is provided by docks, coves, ledges and brush along the shoreline. Androscoggin Lake has been know to produce unusually large chain pickerel and bass. Joseph Arsenault set the state record in 1992 with the catch of a 6 lb, 8 oz. chain pickerel. One stipulation of joining the Androscoggin Yacht Club is that you must be a resident of Wayne. Wayne is a quintessential New England village with two churches, a library, general store and specialty shops on Main Street. It is one of the prettiest villages in Maine. Set on the northwest shoreline of Androscoggin Lake and south of Pocasset Lake, some describe it as an “Interlachen” village. Wayne is located only three hours from Boston and just over an hour from Portland. So . . . when you are thinking about purchasing lakefront property , think Wayne, Maine. Lakeside Yachting

These freshwater clubs have been around for many years.

wayne maine yacht club

Three small-scale clubs on Androscoggin and Cobbosseecontee lakes in central Maine, and Moosehead Lake in Northern Maine, date back to the early 1900s. Cobbosseecontee’s club maintains Maine’s only inland lighthouse, the diminutive Ladies Delight Light. On Moosehead, the club there helps a local museum maintain the 101-year-old steamship Katahdin . The steel vessel, now diesel powered, serves as the club’s flagship.

The club was incorporated in 1909 with the purpose of “promoting yachting and boating on the waters of Lakes Androscoggin and Pocasset,” along with preservation of fishing and care for the lakes.

The simple clubhouse, with its wraparound screen porch, perches just feet from a sandy beach, overlooking a long wooden dock.

An orthopedic surgeon from Joplin, Missouri, Burleigh has spent his summers in Maine since boyhood. Now his children and grandchildren visit the 3,826-acre Androscoggin Lake.

About half the members are year-round residents of Wayne and nearby towns, while others are seasonal visitors. Wayne itself, with its prim 19th-century homes and vintage general store, is a trip back in time, and the yacht club fits right in.

wayne maine yacht club

The club was started in 1904 and is considered one of the oldest continually active freshwater yacht clubs in the country. Back in those days the lake was a popular tourist destination, with excursion steamboats and a recreation area called Island Park that was served by trolleys run by the Augusta, Winthrop, and Gardiner Street Railway.

Today, besides efforts to control invasive milfoil growth, the club hosts summer regattas and has raised $30,000 to restore the Ladies Delight Light, which is powered by an electrical cord that runs to a member’s house on the mainland. Through the colder months, when the lake is frozen, members gather at various houses for Saturday night drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

“There are very few actual yachts of any size,” said Schrader, who remembers as a boy seeing a great gaff-rigged iceboat scoot across Cobbosseecontee. Most members have outboard motorboats, like the Bowrider with a 75-hp engine that Schrader used for years. Schrader’s wife, Diane, is the club’s storekeeper, selling T-shirts and burgees. “We’re trying to do things that get the younger generation involved,” he said.

Schrader lives on part of a 100-acre farm that his family bought in 1906 for $2,400, including a house and two cottages on the 5,543-acre lake. Today, lakeside homes sell for as much as $500,000 or more.

The club has about 150 members, most of them seasonal Maine residents, according to Vice Commodore Juan Galan, a retired beer distributor from Coral Gables, Florida. A saltwater sailor of boats up to 72 feet, Galan said the 40-mile-long lake provides ample area for small boat cruising, with coves and islands to explore.

wayne maine yacht club

Each season starts with a “commodore’s reception” and outing on the 101-year-old converted steamboat Katahdin , which in the early days transported “sports” to resorts and lodges and  was later used to tow booms of logs to be driven down the river.

wayne maine yacht club

Galan said some people sail, but winds are fickle and sometimes fierce on Moosehead, and motorboating predominates. Still, the club offers sailing lessons as well as kayak tours. Galan and his wife bought a home on a nearby mountain in 2007, and stay there from June to October.

“It’s a beautiful area. Most people want to keep it that way,” he said.

Lakeside yacht clubs may seem a world apart from their saltwater counterparts. But the love of sailing, socializing, and spending a sunny summer day on the water is the same wherever you are.

Freelance writer and photographer Steve Cartwright grew up in New York City, summering in Tenants Harbor, Maine. He spent 30 years with Maine newspapers and lives with his family in Waldoboro, Maine.

Lady of the Lake

While many people associate lighthouses with Maine’s rocky coast, Cobbosseecontee Lake near Augusta has been home to one named Ladies Delight since 1908.

wayne maine yacht club

The lighthouse, which is 16 feet high (its lantern adds another nine feet) has always been maintained by yacht club members. Originally the structure was lit by a kerosene lantern, and the reflector was rotated by a system using grandfather clock-like weights. The light, which flashes year-round, is now powered by electricity delivered via a cable that runs from a member’s house on the Manchester shore.

wayne maine yacht club

At one point the lake was home to two other lighthouses, which have since disappeared.

Back in those days, the Cobbosseecontee Yacht Club had 150 members, according to a 1909 article in Motor Boat Magazine, and hosted a number of sailboat and motorboat races during the summer months.

Current club treasurer Jack Schrader said that two oxen were used in the construction of the lighthouse. The builders could transport only one ox at a time because of the size of their barge. After taking the first ox to the island, the workers returned for the second one. But in the meantime, the first ox grew lonely and started swimming back to the mainland. The work crew finally succeeded in getting both oxen onto the island and the lighthouse was completed over the course of that summer.

According to Schrader, the lighthouse got its name because in the early days it was a way station where ladies in boats going from one end of the lake to the other could stop and “freshen up.”

“I’m not sure if that’s really true,” he said. “But that’s the story.”           —Polly Saltonstall

Pocasset Lake (2001)

Pocasset Lake (2001)

[WAYN] is a town in Kennebec County, incorporated on February 12, 1798 from New Sandwich Plantation. It annexed land from Leeds (1810, 1859), and from Livermore (1821), but conceded land to Winthrop (1816, 1838, 1852) and Readfield (1821). The first settler arrived from Sandwich, Massachusetts in 1773. It had also been known as Pocasset.

The town was named for General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, a Revolutionary War hero who commanded Fort Ticonderoga and Captured Stony Point, on the Hudson River, from the British.

Androscoggin yacht club.

[22 Lake Street.]

“There are many persons who have watched with interest the steady increase in summer activities on and about Androscoggin and Pocasset Lakes, and who are of the opinion that it would of great advantage to all concerned to afford these activities adequate protection and encouragement.”

wayne maine yacht club

The Androscoggin Yacht Club on Androscoggin Lake in Wayne, is among the oldest surviving yacht club organizations in Maine, and perhaps the oldest such facility located on an inland waterway, still being used for its original function. First incorporated in 1909, the organization purchased land and opened its clubhouse and docks in 1912. The wood frame clubhouse with wraparound porch and generous meeting hall was designed by architect Carl Fuller Davis of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Androscoggin Yacht Club is significant as a remarkably well-persevered social building that was built as clubhouses for fishing lodges, golf clubs, yacht clubs and social organizations, mostly in tourist-oriented towns or private communities, in the early decades of the 20th century. It is also a building that reflects the development of forms of entertainment and recreation in Wayne, a small town with a substantial summer population.

Wayne Town House

[Maine Route 133] The 1840 town house in Wayne is among the earliest in Maine. The interior is comprised of an open meeting room. A large floor space in the center is flanked on the east and west walls by original plank benches placed in a graduated elevation from the floor like modern bleachers.

It is the only one remaining in the state where not only are the benches for men and women (who originally could not vote) on opposite sides facing each other on a sloping floor, but where the segregation of sexes at town meeting time was, in 1975, still observed for tradition’s sake.

For 42 years prior to the erection of this building, annual and other business meetings of the town were held in private buildings, school houses or the Methodist Church. In 1839 the inhabitants of the town voted to build a town house and in 1840 specified that the foundations should be made three feet thick.* [See photo above.]

Wing Family Cemetery

Wayne Wing Cemetery (1990)

Circling this impressive center are concentric rings, each ring separated by graveled walks and curbed with cut granite which serves as a base for the headstones, thus assuring they are arranged in a perfect circle. Intended to provide a family genealogy, each ring includes the graves of members of succeeding generations descended from whichever of the seven brothers the headstones face.

Entering the yard through its handsome wrought iron gate one cannot help but be impressed by the neat and orderly placement of the headstones. On reading the inscriptions on some of the stones it becomes apparent that dates of death in many cases occurred years before the present cemetery came into being.* [Kirk F. Mohney photos, 1990]

I was trying to find out who the men were that started building guns or rifles actuallly in an old house in Wayne. I know that the couple that owned it until their deaths were from Wayne with the man being a judge. I’m trying to find out who the gun manufacturer in that house was by name. It was the 1800’s. I painted this house for Margaret and the Judge many years ago and she told me this story about their house being a gun shop.
